MGMT on Little Dark Age’s viral success: ‘We just keep getting pretty lucky’

OHMYGOSSIP — MGMT insist ‘Little Dark Age’ going viral is pure luck.
The electronic pop duo – comprising Andrew VanWyngarden and Benjamin Goldwasser – had no idea when the title track from their 2018 album started getting used in thousands upon thousands of clips amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, as they are not on the video-sharing site personally.
That was until it went from thousands to millions.
Speaking to Record Collector magazine, Benjamin said: “That was enlightening in that none of the conscious stuff we did to promote that album mattered as much as this random thing that got picked up on TikTok. I think in a way that freed us up a little bit on this record to just focus on the music. Don’t worry about the other stuff and whatever happens, happens.”
Andrew added: “I think when you have a goal to make something that could become viral or be a huge pop song, intentions enter into the creative picture and it’s rare to actually do that. For us, it’s just that we’ve had a career where we keep getting pretty lucky.”
Benjamin previously told SPIN: “It was surprising to me to even have our song be on TikTok at all, and then it was like, ‘Well, how big is this?
“I don’t even know what a big TikTok song is or what that means.”
The song has been used to soundtrack clips on a range of social issues, including trans rights, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Dom Dolla reveals his one ritual for writing a song ahead of Grammy Awards

OHMYGOSSIP — Dom Dolla has to turn his phone off to create a song.
The 32-year-old music producer has enjoyed huge success with tracks like ‘Take It. Take It’ and ‘Pump the Brakes. Pump the Brakes’ but admitted that whenever he needs to feel “inspired”, he has to tap out of social media and pour himself a cup of coffee.
He told Billboard: “A lot of the time, it’s turning my phone off, having a coffee, going through — I have a folder of inspiration of things that I love, whether that’s moods or vocals that I like or certain tones or sounds that I really enjoy,” he explains. “It’s just every song that I ever listened to that I was a fan of growing up put into a blender that in my brain and spat out the other side.”
The ‘Saving Up’ hitmaker – whose real name is Dominic Matheson – has been nominated for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical at Sunday’s (04.02.24) Grammy Awards for his remix of ‘New Gold’ and explained that when he got the call confirming his first-ever nod, he was just waking up in his bed and immediately started swearing upon hearing the news.
He said: “I was in bed, I woke up, checked my phone and started swearing It was a weird morning. Honestly, back home in Australia, it’s the only award that all of my Australian friends and family understand is the highest national honor of music. It’s been the coolest part. I was back home in Australia and all my friend and family were bugging out.
“I was thinking of inviting my mom over and bringing her to the Grammys. I enjoy sharing those moments with family.”

Why will.i.am is ‘hopeful’ that Britney Spears will return to music

OHMYGOSSIP — will.i.am is “hopeful” that Britney Spears will return to the music business.
The 42-year-old pop superstar – who regained control of her multimillion-dollar fortune and various aspects of her life when a conservatorship arrangement she had been locked in for 13 years was terminated in 2021 – has not released an album since 2016’s ‘Glory’ and has previously vowed to never perform again, but Will is sure that she will be back.
Speaking on The Sunday People’s ‘Invite Only’ podcast, he said: “I really adore and appreciate Britney. Is she on a break? You can’t be on a break if you listen to music every day and it brings you joy.
“She’s just in a different position at the moment, but her relationship with music is as genuine as it gets. It’s the most honest that I’ve seen an artist have so publicly. [In her videos] she’s not worried about the lighting and make-up, she’s just up there like raw, freaking loving it, having her response to the music. People criticise it because they don’t have that fearlessness.
“They’re like, ‘Wait, no filter? Not the best lighting?’
“But her freedom is everything she’s been fighting for. She is demonstrating the most poignant definition of freedom. That’s dope. Imagine if she does a world tour… you think she’d have to worry about expensive costumes? She could do the hits like she does in her living room. Britney would go out there in a pink bathing suit and smash it. I don’t know if she will do a tour. I would hope. If not, it doesn’t take away from her legacy.”
The rap star, 48, famously teamed up with Britney to record their 2013 hit ‘Scream and Shout’ and whilst she has not been seen on stage since the ‘Piece of Me’ tour in 2018, Will insisted that the ‘…Baby One More Time’ singer is still able to bring “joy” to the world despite her ordeal.
She said: “Imagine you realise that the people protecting you, weren’t.
“Imagine how off-putting, how that would change how you orbit, your balance. But you still want to create and you still make awesome music. Imagine giving the world joy while you’re in pain. The pain is you don’t know who to trust, but you still shine. And if you see her life now, she’s living all these things she’s always wanted to do – her perspective, her choices. And she has a beautiful spirit, you can see it when she dances!”

The Killers too old for synth-pop record

OHMYGOSSIP — The Killers ditched their planned synth-inspired album because they are “getting older”.
Frontman Brandon Flowers. 42, admitted the band had been working on the “synth-pop record” but decided to move ahead with a “rock ’n’ roll album” instead as they were not enjoying it.
According to The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column, he said: “I did not want to commit to a whole synth-pop record. It is complex.
“There is a place in our hearts for this music but we are getting older.
“We thought you could make an album faster on the road, as you are working more with computers, but we did not get the gratification from it.
“We are now making a rock ’n’ roll album.
“We have only been around 20 years and from when we started, rock radio is a different animal as there were fewer and fewer stations.”
Meanwhile, after their summer European tour, the band will kick off their ‘Hot Fuss’ residency at Las Vegas’ Colosseum in August.
The residency will celebrate their debut studio album, which was released in 2004 and Brandon has promised fans that they can expect to hear all of the classic tunes from the record.
Speaking on the ‘Smartless’ podcast, he said: “It is 20 years of our first record and we are going to play it front to back, and then we will do eight or nine singles.”

Tony Christie vows never to quit music as it’s his medicine

OHMYGOSSIP — Tony Christie has vowed to keep recording and touring until they find a “miracle cure” for dementia or his voice falters.
The 80-year-old singer feared he’d have to stop working when he was diagnosed with the degenerative disease in 2021, however, he was able to make one final album in Nashville with his son Sean and wife Sue there every step of the way.
Tony, who releases the LP ‘We Still Shine’ on February 16, insists music is his medicine and he won’t stop playing live and recording tracks for as long as his voice lasts.
He told Record Collector magazine: “I’ve just stuck at it and ridden the storm, and all the ups and downs. I don’t have a choice other than to keep recording and touring. If you stop, you die. Music is a therapy and a medication for me. So, the more that I work, the better I feel. I’ll keep going until they either find a miracle cure for dementia, or until my voice goes.
I’ll record and tour for as long as I can. As soon as the voice starts to go, I’ll retire gracefully and end on a high.”
The album is his first since 2011’s ‘Now’s the Time!’
The ‘Amarillo’ hitmaker said in a statement: ”I loved every minute of making this record. It’s the first time my wife Sue had joined me on a recording trip to Nashville. My son rented a house that was literally a two-minute walk across the road to Blackbird Recording Studios where we spent three weeks making what I believe to be the best album I’ve ever made, and I really mean it. I’ve just come back from Abbey Road Studios where the album has been mastered and it’s the first time I got to hear the album in its entirety and in sequence. I was so blown away by the sound, It brought me to tears. This album is very special to me and has been in the planning for a good few years.”
Tony was an ambassador for the Music for Dementia campaign in 2023, and he released the charity single, ‘Thank You For Being A Friend’, with music legends Sting and Nile Rodgers, to raise money for the Power of Music Fund.
Tony is touring in 2024. Head to www.tonychristie.com for the full tour dates and tickets.

Sam Fender set to headline Boardmasters festival

OHMYGOSSIP — Sam Fender is set to headline the Boardmasters festival.
The 29-year-old ‘Dead Boys’ singer – who shocked fans in 2022 when he announced he was cancelling a string of concerts to look after his mental health – was among the second set of artists announced on Thursday (01.02.24) who will be joining the five-day Cornwall event’s 2024 line-up.
Organisers announced Sam had signed up after his lyrics were recently spotted projected on the cliffs around the Cornish town of Newquay, sparking speculation he would be playing Boardmasters.
The singer – who made his Boardmasters debut a decade ago – joins headliners including Stormzy, Chase and Status (Live), Becky Hill, Bicep, Nia Archives, Tom Odell, Andy C and Eliza Rose, with festival bosses saying: “You guessed it… Sam Fender is coming to Boardmasters, this time securing headliner status exactly 10 years on from his Boardies debut in 2014 where he played The View stage.
“Sam then played Boardmasters’ Land of Saints stage in 2018, and having drawn one of the biggest crowds of the weekend, festival organisers added him to the main stage line-up as well.
“Today, the mystery is unravelled as Boardmasters confirm Sam and his band will be joining the stellar 2024 line-up following ‘Seventeen Going Under’ and other lyrics spotted on the Newquay cliffs.”
Located across two sites – Watergate Bay and Fistral Beach – Boardmasters will run from 7 to 11 August.
Sam said two years ago he was pulling out of a number of gigs as he was suffering “burn out” from touring.
He posted the announcement on Instagram, saying it would be “completely hypocritical” of him to advocate for discussion of the topic without looking after his mental wellbeing.
Sam added: “My friends and colleagues have been worried about me for a while.
“I’ve neglected myself for over a year now and haven’t dealt with things that have deeply affected me.
“It’s impossible to do this work on myself while on the road, and it’s exhausting feigning happiness and wellness for the sake of business. My friends and colleagues have been worried about me for a while and it’s not going to get better unless I take the time to do so.”
Highlights of Sam’s career so far have included a Glastonbury Pyramid Stage show and winning an Ivor Novello award for best song for the title track from his album ‘Seventeen Going Under’.

All Saints star Shaznay Lewis unveils second solo album featuring Self Esteem

OHMYGOSSIP — Shaznay Lewis is set to release her second solo album, ‘Pages’, in May
The All Saints star, 48, has unveiled her follow-up to her 2004 debut ‘Open’, and revealed her deeply personal record will arrive on May 17.
The ‘Pure Shores’ hitmaker – who had massive success in the chart-topping girl group in the late 90s and noughties with five UK number ones – also shared the precious new single, ‘Kiss of Life’, which is about her children.
Shaznay – who has Tyler-Xaine and Tigerlily with husband Christian ‘Storm’ Horsfall – said: “I do feel as though I’m starting again, and making this record with some special people has been an exhilarating experience. I felt free for the first time. For this album, myself and the people I worked with were making it for one reason only: to just make music that we felt was good, and for people to take and enjoy. You need to be in the right place and clear headspace to create good work and finally, I had that.”
She added of the process: “I like to talk a lot before we start creating anything. That feels more organic to me; when you are about to open yourself up you need to know the person a bit more. I had some wonderful conversations with Emily. We played with many melody ideas, and once Kiss of Life was finished we knew we had something special. I always know what my ears want to hear. The song was written about my children.”
Fans have already heard the lead single, ‘Miracle’.
Shaznay recruited Self Esteem for the track ‘Pick You Up’, while ‘You Might Need Somebody’ hitmaker Shola Ama and ragga legend General Levy are featured on ‘Good Mourning’.
Meanwhile, fans can catch Shaznay at Mighty Hoopla festival in London this June.

The tracklisting is:
1. ‘Missiles’
2. ‘Pick You Up featuring Self Esteem’
3. ‘Kiss of Life
4. ‘Good Mourning’ featuring Shola Ama and General Levy
5. ‘Supposed To Be’
6. ‘Got To Let Go’
7. ‘Tears To The Floor’
8. ‘Bruises’
9. ‘Peaches’
10. ‘Awake (Motu)’
11. ‘Miracle’
12. ‘Hearts In Danger’

Billy Joel lost ‘fun’ of writing music

OHMYGOSSIP — Billy Joel stopped finding writing new music “fun”.
The 74-year-old singer released ‘Turn the Lights Back On’, his first single in 17 years, earlier this week and he’s explained he took so long to bring out new material because he had fallen out of love with the recording process and found penning lyrics “painful”.
Speaking with his co-writer Freddy Wexler on ‘Audacy Check In’, he said: “It was fun. Music is fun. Rock n’ roll was fun. It was all about having fun — and I kind of lost that and I turned the lights off because it wasn’t fun anymore.”
Billy explained over the last 17 years, other people had encouraged him to get back into the studio but he “always resisted it”.
He added: “I studiously avoided it because songwriting had become painful. I have this high bar. I said to myself, ‘If I don’t reach that bar, I beat myself up and I punched myself and I hate myself.’ So, I stopped doing it because I got tired of feeling like that.”
But when he heard what Freddy was working on two years ago, the ‘Piano Man’ hitmaker’s love for creating new music began to return.
He said: “The melody, the chords, the chord progression, even the time signature was something that struck me immediately, and that’s how I relate to music.
“This particular lyric in this song, I’ve had these thoughts, I could have written these lyrics verbatim. I’ve chewed on these words and I’ve thought of these words, and I’ve said these words before. It was all kind of falling into place — and who am I to fight that?”
Billy is set to perform the track at the Grammy Awards this weekend, marking his first time playing at the ceremony in 22 years.

The ‘Caught Up’ hitmaker – who is set to headline the Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show on February 11 – has revealed the four artists got too “caught up in the moment” and were too “distracted” to get their project off the ground.
Appearing on ‘Club Shay Shay’, he spilled of the collaborations that never took off: “You gon’ hate me for this one.
“JAY-Z, Pharrell, Diddy, and me was supposed to be a group. Yeah, that’s crazy. You gon’ hate me for that I know.”
He continued: “We was talking about it and having secret meetings about it, talking about music and how we gon’ flip it.
The business of it. And somehow man, we just got distracted. And it never happened. That’s the one that I actually wish would have happened.”
The trio have collaborated with Usher individually, with the ‘Love In This Club’ hitmaker teaming up with Pharell on ‘U Don’t Have to Call’, ‘Hot Tottie’ with JAY-Z and ‘I Need a Girl (Part One)’ with Diddy.
Jay also teamed up with Pharrell’s Neptunes on ‘Excuse Me Miss’ and ‘Frontin”.

The Last Dinner Party are hoping to get Snoop Dogg on their song Big Dog

OHMYGOSSIP — The Last Dinner Party would love to get Snoop Dogg on their song ‘Big Dog’.
The unreleased song is quickly becoming a fan-favourite at their live shows, and now the indie pop group – comprising Abigal Morris, Georgia Davies, Lizzie Mayland, Aurora Nishevci, and Emily Roberts – have revealed they are hoping to bag a verse from the ‘Gin and Juice’ rapper.
Speaking to the Daily Star newspaper’s Wired column, Abigal said: “We’ve talked about having Snoop Dogg on a verse.
“Big Dog is a cursed Nine Inch Nails-meets-Tom Waits situation of a song.
“We want Snoop to do a verse on that.”
The girls would also love to work with cyber-pop stars Charli XCX or Caroline Polachek
Abigal said: “It’s hard to think about having someone else in our songs, as there are already five of us to work with.
“But we’d love to have someone like Charli XCX or Caroline Polachek with us, so that we could go cyber.”
The band – who won the Rising Star BRIT Award and BBC Sound of 2024 poll – released their debut studio album, ‘Prelude to Ecstacy’, on Friday (02.02.24), to acclaim.
And they’ve already received career advice from the likes of Courtney Love and Florence Welch.
The band had to come up with a radio-friendly version of ‘Nothing Matters’ and they had some help from the Hole star as they agonised over the change.
Abigail told Music Week magazine: “We met her at The Great Escape [festival] and at the time we were in agony over what on earth we were going to use instead of [the F-word] because that’s the whole point.
“After the show she stormed up the dressing room stairs saying, ‘I’ve got it!’ She had an empty packet of painkillers and she’d scrawled ‘punch’ on there.
“She was kinda pitching to us. We were like, ‘Yeah, thanks!’ We appreciated her passion.”
Abigail added of the Florence and the Machine star: “Florence Welch was someone we spoke to who really made an impact on us.
“She has an almost identical story to us. She got signed at the same age we did, to the same label and has a similar approach to art and music in the sense of world-building and storytelling.
“She was just so wise and kind and generous. She’s someone that we really look up to and she’s a really wonderful person to have on our side.”

Lily Allen has written 50 songs for her new album

OHMYGOSSIP — Lily Allen has written 50 songs for her new album.
The 38-year-old pop star has not released a record since ‘No Shame’ in 2018 but when a fan reached out to her on X/Twitter on Wednesday (23.01.24) evening to lament that they couldn’t stop thinking about how there were 40 unreleased tracks for her fifth album, she replied to let them know that there are now even more in the vaults.
She replied: “It’s more like 50 now!”
One of those unreleased tracks is ‘Party Line’ – which Lily had first performed at the Way Out West Festival six years ago – and while a studio recording was due to make an appearance on her next album, she claimed when asked about the fate of the track that it could potentially be lost forever because it is stored in a cloud service to which she no longer has access to.
She said: “IN A DROPBOX OR A WETRANSFER THAT I CANT REMEMBER THE USERNAME LET ALONE THE PASSWORDS FOR.”
Lily – who achieved major success with early hits like ‘Smile’, ‘Not Fair’, ‘The Fear’ and ’22’ – first revealed that she had returned to the studio after performing her track ‘F*** You’ alongside American pop star Olivia Rodrigo in response to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the landmark Roe v Wade ruling, which left millions of women across the US without access to a legal or safe abortion.
Speaking on ‘The Jonathan Ross Show’, she said: “I was really nervous because I haven’t done it in a long time, I haven’t done it sober. I don’t really know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t like that. It was really, really amazing. People went absolutely ballistic. I was really overwhelmed. It sparked something in me.”

Lana Del Rey announces country album Lasso

OHMYGOSSIP — Lana Del Rey’s new country album, ‘Lasso’, will drop in September.
After she revealed she was working with regular collaborator Jack Antonoff and country music maker Luke Laird on new tunes, the ‘Video Games’ hitmaker has confirmed she is going country like everyone else in music.
Speaking at Billboard’s pre-Grammy event in Los Angeles on Wednesday (31.01.24), she teased: ”If you can’t already tell by our award winners and our performers, the music business is going country. We’re going country. It’s happening.
“That’s why Jack has followed me to Muscle Shoals, Nashville, Mississippi, over the last four years.”
In a recent Instagram video revealing she is supporting the San Francisco 49’ers at the upcoming Super Bowl – where they will face off with Taylor Swift’s boyfriend Travis Kelce’s team the Kansas City Chiefs – she also spilled: “Jack’s [Antonoff] in town, I’m going to see him work on some little songs. I’ve had a really beautiful week with [songwriter and producer] Luke Laird.”
The prolific star’s last studio album was 2023’s ‘Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd’.
Last year also saw the ‘Cinnamon Girl’ singer drop her leaked track, ‘Say Yes To Heaven’.
The standalone single was penned with Rick Nowels way back in 2012 and fell victim to a leak that saw the tune go viral on TikTok.
She is also nominated for five prizes for her latest album at this weekend’s Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.
Meanwhile, the ‘Born to Die’ hitmaker previously admitted she “had no other choice” but to keep making music – even in moments of self-doubt.
She told the Daily Star newspaper’s Wired column: “I never forget the abyss, those moments when nothing worked, where I was seriously considering quitting. There really was a feeling of failure.
“I had no other choice than to continue, because I don’t know how to do anything else. Courage would have been to disappear.
“But as I was already famous, I took the easy way out. I continued to make records. There was no plans B.”

Supergroup Dead and Company to reunite for residency at Vegas Sphere

OHMYGOSSIP — Supergroup Dead and Company are reuniting for a Las Vegas residency at the Sphere.
The rock band – including surviving Grateful Dead band members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart, as well as John Mayer, Jeff Chimenti, and Oteil Burbridge – might have completed their final tour last year, but they are set to make a comeback with a string of yet-to-be-announced dates at the globe-shaped immersive billion-dollar venue in Sin City, following in the footsteps of U2.
In a social media post, the group said: “In 2023, Dead and Company played their final tour. But there are other ways to make sure the music never stops. And it’s gonna be a ball.”
It’s not known if drummer Bill Kreutzmann, who quit their final tour due a “shift in creative direction”, will be joining them at the Sphere.
A statement announcing his exit from “Dear Deadheads.
“Every day, things change. After many long discussions and some good old-fashioned soul searching, we are letting you know that our brother Bill Kreutzmann will not be joining us on our final summer tour. Bill wants you to know that he is in good spirits, good health and he is not retiring.
“This is the culmination of a shift in creative direction as we keep these songs alive and breathing in ways that we each feel is best to continue to honour the legacy of the Grateful Dead. The final tour will go on as planned with Bill’s full endorsement and support.”
Irish rockers U2’s final show performing ‘Achtung Baby’ in full is on March 2, and then rockers Phish will make the Sphere their home from April 18 to 21.
