Victoria Monet contemplated quitting music

OHMYGOSSIP — Victoria Monet came close to quitting music.
The songwriter has penned huge hits for the likes of Ariana Grande, Blackpink, and Fifth Harmony, but when it came to her own music, she struggled to gain any real traction, until her 2023 debut album ‘Jaguar II’, featuring the hit single ‘On My Mama’, which is nominated for the Grammy Award for Record of the Year.
The 34-year-old star is nominated for a further six prizes at this weekend’s ceremony, including Best New Artist.
She told Variety magazine of her start in music: “At the time, I questioned it so much: Like, what is it about me that’s so lacklustre? Why aren’t people seeing me? It was even to the point where I would sing demos and try to sound really great so rappers would keep me on the hook.
“I feel like maybe even that is a part of what was so hard. I had something to prove. It wasn’t just handed to me.
“So it’s all a part of why I think things are coming to fruition now: It’s just time. It’s almost like, ‘Alright, girl — you didn’t give up. We’re going to give you something.’”
The chart-topping star also admitted she considered not coming out as bisexual because she feared it would be another “struggle”, along with being Black, that would hold her back.
She admitted: “I thought that conforming would make me go further.
“Being picturesque, straight… It almost felt like you didn’t want to add any more [weight] to your ankles trying to win a race. It’s like, ‘You’re already a woman, you’re already Black — you’d better pick a struggle.’”

Scottish indie rockers Shambolics to drop debut album this month

OHMYGOSSIP — Scottish rockers Shambolics have unveiled their debut album, ‘Dreams, Schemes and Young Teams’.
The Glasgow-based indie band – who draw inspiration from indie pinkings Arctic Monkeys and The La’s to Fleetwood Mac and The Streets – will release their first record on February 16, and they’ve shared the new single ‘Never Be Mine’.
Their upbeat songs are inspired by vocalist/guitarist duo Darren Forbes and Lewis McDonald’s tough upbringing in Kirkcaldy
Darren said: “We wanted the songs here to be quite uplifting, including the ones that deal with social issues. It’s like even though [redacted] happens, it’s going to be okay. It’s about trying to find some hope in the bleakest of times, about finding an escape from the terrible situation young people currently find themselves in.”
Darren said of ‘Never Be Mine’: “It’s about a boy and a girl who meet each week, but they have no real ambitions to be in a relationship. They know they’re playing one another but don’t really want to say that out loud or admit it to one another – they’re in it for the moment.”
The album also features The View’s Kyle Falconer on the synth-pop earworm ‘Attention’.
Shambolics were discovered by Oasis’ former manager Alan McGee, who gave them a singles deal at his Creation23 label.

‘Dreams, Schemes and Young Teams’ tracklist:

Mark Ronson and Ryan Gosling planning more music together

OHMYGOSSIP — Mark Ronson and Ryan Gosling are in talks to make more music together.
The ‘Uptown Funk’ hitmaker and ‘Barbie’ actor have already teamed up on ‘I’m Just Ken’ for the Mattel blockbuster – as well as a Christmas version after the film’s release – and now Mark has admitted he’d love to collaborate with him on new material.
He told Billboard: “So Ryan … he’s got amazing taste and great ideas, and he’s an extremely funny and talented musician and singer.
“So we made this version and then we started to hang, and definitely, I would love to make more music.
“You know, I think it would be great. And we’ve talked about it a little bit.”
The 48-year-old producer admitted they “definitely had a lot of fun” when they reconnected for the festive remake.
He recalled: “I probably hadn’t spoken to him for about a year till the movie was wrapping up.
“And I was like, ‘Hey, we finished the version actually, Slash is playing on it, I just want to make sure you’re happy with it before we mix it’.
“And he really loved it. And then we started to talk over the past couple of months, and we’re just talking about different kinds of music and things that he loved and [British singer/songwriter] Scott Walker and this stuff, and I was like, ‘Well, we should do a version of Ken that just does something a little different, like a different arrangement.’ ”
For Mark, a big part of that was his “pride as a songwriter”, as he wanted to prove the original track wasn’t just a one note hit.
He explained: “Because, you know, there was a lot of talk like the ’80s power ballad and this, and I mean, it has all those things, but I think some of my pride as a songwriter, I wanted to prove that it wasn’t just that.”

‘We’ve been in the studio’: Justin Timberlake teases new music from NSYNC

OHMYGOSSIP — Justin Timberlake has teased *NSYNC have new music on the way.
The 43-year-old singer has only just made his solo comeback with new single ‘Selfish’ but he revealed he has been back in the studio with Chris Kirkpatrick, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone, and JC Chasez after they reunited last year for ‘Better Place’, which featured in his movie ‘Trolls Band Together’.
Appearing on ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’, he teased: “We’ve been in the studio, so there may be a little something in the future, too.”
Justin’s admission came as he discussed becoming a “studio rat” after “growing up in the industry and getting access to so much in the studio.”
He added: “I just loved being in there and I loved the creative process. And also as it pertains to harmonies, I spent some time with four other guys doing a lot of harmonies.”
While he hadn’t worked with *NSYNC in over 20 years, the ‘SexyBack’ hitmaker admitted it felt like no time had passed when they got together again to record ‘Better Place’.
He said: “That was fun. It’s kind of crazy, like, there’s so much that just picks up right where it left off as far as the chemistry.”
Justin’s bandmate Lance recently admitted he had “no idea” there would be such a demand for the group to make a comeback.
He told ‘Entertainment Tonight’: “It is beautiful, you know?
“To be this age and the fans are still this excited, it is a dream come true.
“I had no idea the fandom would go this nuts.
“It was pretty emotional, the first time we all got in the studio together.
“Back in March, we decided to, you know, get back together and have some fun and it was like no [time] had passed.
“But there was there was a lot of tears. It was just tears of joy. And it was just a beautiful moment.
“Like, time does so much and for us to finally be together, it just feels right.”
Fans have been calling for the ‘Bye Bye Bye’ hitmakers to go on tour following their reunion, but Lance insisted the group “don’t have solid plans” just yet.
He added: “I’ve been telling the fans, like, we don’t have solid plans right now. Because, you know, we’re waiting for the strike to end we’ve got things to do. “But [the fans are] definitely shaping our future.”

Megan Thee Stallion teases The Hot Girl Summer 2024 tour and new album

OHMYGOSSIP — Megan Thee Stallion is to embark on ‘The Hot Girl Summer Tour’ this year.
The ‘HISS’ rapper has revealed she is planning a summer of outdoor shows in 2024, with the tour named after her 2019 hit with Ty Dolla $ign and rival Nicki Minaj
Appearing on ‘Good Morning America’ this week, she teased: “Oh, we’re having the tour this year.
The Hot Girl Summer Tour is gonna be 2024 summertime. I feel like I’ve never been able to be outside during my early days during the summer since 2019.”
Megan, 28, has also teased a new album is also on the way.
She said: “So this is gonna be the first time that I drop an album on time for the summer. I do want to give the Hotties the Megan Thee Stallion experience.”
Megan’s recent songs have all had a snake theme, ‘Cobra’ and the latest tune ‘HISS’.
Meanwhile, Megan and Nicki, 41, have been feuding via song.
The latter recently mocked Megan on her diss track ‘Big Foot’, with a series of accusations at her rap rival, including suggestions that Megan has lied about having cosmetic surgery.
‘Big Foot’ came after Megan appeared to take a swipe at Nicki’s choice of man, with the ‘HISS’ line: “These h*** don’t be mad at Megan, these h*** mad at Megan’s Law.”
That’s how Nicki interpreted it anyway.
The law means sex offenders’ information is made public and could be a dig about Nicki’s husband, Kenneth Petty, who didn’t register himself as a sex offender after pleading guilty to attempted rape.
However, the pair haven’t always been enemies.
Singing Megan’s praises, Nicki told Variety in 2020: “It’s so important for women to feel inspired to achieve goals outside of social media, where the focus is usually placed on their bodies or who they’re dating at the time.
“Women are more than just baby mamas, and we can continue to prove that by being goal-oriented, bettering ourselves and being independent. Megan is the perfect example that we can have fun and be smart at the same time.”

The Pet Shop Boys return with new single Loneliness from new album Nonetheless

OHMYGOSSIP — Pet Shop Boys have shared their new single, ‘Loneliness’, from their upcoming album ‘Nonetheless’.
The ‘West End Girls’ duo – comprising Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe – have returned to using an orchestra for their upcoming James Ford-produced collection, which is due out on April 26, and is a follow-up to 2020’s ‘Hotspot’.
Premiering the new single on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show with Zoe Ball on Wednesday morning (31.01.24), Neil said: “When we made it, it was written, a lot of it was written, during lockdown. So, we wrote a tonne of songs. And more or less every track, in fact, every track, has got an orchestra on it, but it’s not like an orchestra album. It’s a very melodic sort of album, our last three albums have been strictly electronic and this one we’ve gone back to using an orchestra but also, of course, with electronics.”
Those who purchase the 2CD and double white vinyl deluxe editions of the record will get to hear the bonus four-track EP, ‘Furthermore’, comprising new recordings of ‘Heart’, ‘Being Boring’, ‘Always On My Mind’ and ‘It’s a Sin’.
The pair have also announced a five-night residency at the Royal Opera House from July 23 to 27.
Neil said: “It’s great because the Royal Opera House is a very important venue for the arts, but a lot of people I think never get to go into it. And so one of the reasons why we like to do it, and one of the reasons they like us to do it is that it’s a totally different audience – so you can go in there, you can have the smoked salmon sandwiches and the champagne and you sit in the red velvet, but you get pumping electronic music rather than Puccini or something.”

The tracklisting for ‘Nonetheless’ is:
‘Loneliness’
‘Feel’
‘Why am I dancing?’
‘New London boy’
‘Dancing star’
‘A new bohemia’
‘The schlager hit parade’
‘The secret of happiness’
‘Bullet for Narcissus’
‘Love is the law’

OHMYGOSSIP — Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin are set to be bestowed with the 2024 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
The 76-year-old music legend and his longtime songwriting partner will receive the prestigious accolade – in honour of the late songwriting siblings George and Ira Gershwin – on March 20 in Washington.
Elton – who has just retired from touring – said: “I’ve been writing songs with Bernie for 56 years, and we never thought that … one day this might be bestowed upon us.
“It’s an incredible honour for two British guys to be recognized like this. I’m so honoured.”
Bernie commented: “To be in a house along with the great American songwriters, to even be in the same avenue is humbling, and I am absolutely thrilled to accept.”
Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden hailed the duo for penning “some of the most memorable songs of our lives.”
She also highlighted “the quality and broad appeal of their music and their influence on their fellow artists.”
The prize was handed to Joni Mitchell in 2023. Previous recipients include Sir Paul McCartney, Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson, Paul Simon, Lionel Richie, Tony Bennett, Stevie Wonder, and Burt Bacharach and Hal David.
Elton previously said he was “humbled” that some of the biggest stars in pop music dedicated their time to putting their own spin on his timeless classics for his 2018 ‘Revamp’ album, and how he hoped it would help the songs reach the next generation.
Lady Gaga did a rendition of ‘Your Song’, which has previously been covered by the likes of Ellie Goulding and Sir Rod Stewart in the past.

SZA teases Paramore collaboration ‘soon’

OHMYGOSSIP — SZA has teased a Paramore collaboration is “coming soon”.
Hayley Williams, the ‘This Is Why’ group’s lead singer, previously admitted she was eager to team up with the ‘Kill Bill’ hitmaker on a song and now it’s officially on the way.
In a fan Q+A on Appel Music’s TikTok, SZA was asked if the collab is real and teased: “Yeah.
“Soon, soon! It’s in the works.”
Hayley joked that she had been texting the Grammy winner “weekly” about hooking up on a track.
Asked on the ‘Black People Love Paramore’ podcast which Black artists she’d like to work with, Hayley replied: “It’s been SZA for a long time, because I love her voice.
“But also — ah man, there’s too many, to be honest with you.”
Hayley feels artists of different genres haven’t approached her band for collaborations because of the hardcore emo scene they were part of.
She continued: “I was saying recently to someone, because we grew up in the scene we grew up in, I rarely get asked to do features for things that I feel like really get down to my core.
“So I’m still keeping my eye out for whether that be new artists, or maybe it’s older, established artists — but probably people who do groovier s***; something that I can sink down into a little bit, instead of having to just be, I guess, the ‘Misery Business’ version of myself.”
She added of the ‘Good Days’ singer: “SZA has, for about six years now, been the one. I’m sending the text weekly at this point.
“I think ‘Garden’ is my favourite song by SZA.
“But also, all of her records, they’re records you can put on and [have] no skips for me.”
It’s no secret that SZA is a fan of Hayley with both their fanbases wanting them to record a duet together.
In 2022, SZA hinted at a future collaboration with the ‘Still Into You’ hitmaker.
Quizzed on when she’ll be jumping on a track with the alternative star on Twitter, she suggested it wasn’t out of the question as they are in touch often.
She replied: “I talk to her more than you’d think lol.”
Meanwhile, Paramore have just shared a cover of Talking Heads’ ‘Burning Down The House’ – putting split rumours behind them.

Miley Cyrus, Lorde, The National contribute to Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense tribute album

OHMYGOSSIP — Miley Cyrus, Lorde, The National and more have contributed to the upcoming ‘Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Tribute to Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense’ covers album.
Following the success of the A24 documentary IMAX film last year and to mark the 40th anniversary of the original 1984 album and iconic concert film of the same name, 16 artists from all kinds of genres were chosen to record a cover of one of the songs on ‘Stop Making Sense’, which will be presented in the original order.
The first track, out now, is Paramore’s spin on ‘Burning Down The House’.
The other artists are: BADBADNOTGOOD, Blondshell, The Cavemen., Chicano Batman Feat. Money Mark, DJ Tunez, El Mató a un Policía Motorizado, girl in red, Jean Dawson, Kevin Abstract, The Linda Lindas, Teezo Touchdown and Toro y Moi.
Their songs from the nine-track collection and a release date are yet to be announced.
Despite a difficult past, band members David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz and Jerry Harrison reunited for the first time in more than two decades last September for the ‘Stop Making Sense’ screening at the Toronto International Film Festival, followed by various other appearances and interviews.
It was the first time they were all together since their 2002 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
‘Stop Making Sense’ spent over two years on the Billboard 200 chart and drew wide acclaim from critics.
Addressing their reunion after years of bad blood in a recent interview with Pitchfork, frontman David said: “When it became obvious that the film was going to come back out—new print, new sound, new distribution and all that—whatever differences we might have had, we put them aside and said, ‘No, we really believe in this, we’re all united, and we all feel the same way about this.'”
After 16 years, Talking Heads split in 1991 when David decided to leave amid a fractious relationship with his bandmates and creative differences.
Asked about a reunion tour, guitarist and keyboardist Jerry told the Los Angeles Times: “Right now, we’re concentrating on Stop Making Sense and how much fun we’re having revisiting the film. We’re living in the moment, so that’s all we’re thinking about.”

Eminem would love to do a joint album with 50 cent

OHMYGOSSIP — Eminem is working on new music – but it isn’t for a joint album with 50 Cent.
The ‘Lose Yourself’ rapper insists he has no idea where the rumour came from, but he said he’s been trying to get the ‘In da Club’ hitmaker to do an album with him for a while to no avail.
Speaking on SiriusXM radio station ‘Shade 45’, he teased of his own music plans: “I’m working on a little something.”
Addressing the rumoured album with the ‘Candy Shop’ rapper, he said: “I don’t know where that’s come from, but it’s crazy.
“I’m trying to get him to make a new album so bad. We need another 50 [Cent] album, like, really bad. 50’s on a roll right now. He’s been on a roll since the tour. I told him whatever the [redacted] he needs from me, I’m here. That [redacted] be crazy, though — an album with me and him.”
The pair – who have collaborated on several songs together over the years – are, however, known to be working together on a TV adaptation of Eminem’s movie ‘8 Mile’.
Eminem, 51, discovered the 48-year-old hip-hop star after he dropped the mixtape ‘Guess Who’s Back?’ in 2002, and subsequently signed him to his label Shady Records.
Shady’s last studio album was 2020’s ‘Music to Be Murdered By’, which later received a Side B deluxe edition.
Meanwhile, 50 previously teased a joint album with Dr. Dre.
Speaking on ‘Big Boy’s Neighbourhood’, he said: “I got a text from [Eminem] that he had already spoke to Dre, and that Dre is in there and he got some crazy stuff for me to go hear.
“This is my process: I’ll go make something, what I can find, the best music that I can put my hands on. And when I feel real good about it, I bring it to put pressure on Dre to offer me something. ‘Cause he’ll have something… He’s always had something.”
