Norah Jones was more ambitious before she was famous

OHMYGOSSIP — Norah Jones was “way more” ambitious before she was famous.
The Grammy Award-winning musician has admitted that after selling more than 45 millions records worldwide and winning a host of gongs, she has never recaptured the hunger she had while making her debut album ‘Come Away With Me’.
She shared: “It happened too fast. It felt insane and stressful, people knowing who you are, people critiquing you. And then the haters come out and hate you, and you’re like, ‘this is what people dream of, so why does it feel so weird?'”
Norah, 37, explained that she feels more comfortable now she is no longer enjoying the same level of success she experienced after her debut record was released.
She told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper: “That was a moment in time where things lined up in a way that kind of went over the top. When it died down, it became more comfortable. I really love playing music but I don’t need to play arenas. It just seems overwhelming.”
These days, all of Norah’s career-related goals are internal.
She explained: “The goal is always to get out of my own head. That’s why you play. You can have weird nights.
“You might not be inspired the first second you go onstage. But I just remember that I’m playing music and let go of all the s**t, whatever’s bothering me, all the little things, just let them go. That’s when the real stuff happens, the good stuff, when you’re not overthinking.”

Review: Mac Miller Grows Up, Plays It Smooth on ‘The Divine Feminine’

OHMYGOSSIP — On his fourth album, Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller continues to move past the drugged-out party-boy persona of his 2011 debut.

Following last year’s introspective GO:OD A.M., he’s now a smooth lover man; he charmingly fits low-key bedroom patter over trumpet-driven Chance the Rapper-style jazziness on “Stay,” and rides alongside Anderson . Paak over the chilled-out house groove of “Dang!” But Miller’s grown-ass beats clash with his juvenile boasts (“I just eat pussy, other people need food”), so he often ends up sounding like a well-meaning kid who can’t stop putting his kicks up on the fancy furniture.

Hear Lost Temple of the Dog Song ‘Angel of Fire’

OHMYGOSSIP — Temple of the Dog, the early Nineties one-off led by Soundgarden rocker Chris Cornell and future members of Pearl Jam, is getting a deluxe reissue of its sole, self-titled album originally released in 1991. The reissue will feature demos of two songs that didn’t make the cut. One of them, the brittle, ballad-y “Angel of Fire,” has just made its way online.

The reissue will come out in a variety of formats. The most extravagant edition will contain four discs. The first disc contains a remastered version of the original album along with alternate mixes of some of the songs. The second features five demos including “Angel of Fire” and the never-before-released “Black Cat.” The third is a DVD containing promo videos and live performances. And the final disc is a Blu-ray Audio disc of the LP with music videos. Rolling Stone’s David Fricke wrote liner notes for the release.

The other configurations include a double-LP release, a two-CD deluxe edition (featuring the first two discs of the box set) and a single CD version. All will be available on September 30th.

The group has also planned a number of live dates around the United States in November. They are donating $1.50 from each ticket to the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation, a philanthropic organization whose aim is to protect vulnerable children. Another $1.50 will go to Pearl Jam’s Vitalogy Foundation, which provides support for community health, the environment, arts and education and social change.

“We wanted to do the one thing we never got to do … play shows and see what it feels like to be the band that we walked away from 25 years ago,” Cornell said in a statement. “This is something no one has ever seen. We wanted to stop and recognize that we did this and pay homage.”

Neil Young Protests Dakota Access Pipeline With ‘Indian Givers’ Video

OHMYGOSSIP – Neil Young joins the protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline with his new song and video for “Indian Givers.” The video combines footage of the recent protests against the pipeline with footage of Young singing the track while driving in his car.

“There’s a battle raging on the sacred land / Our brothers and sisters have to take a stand,” Young sings on the track. “Against us now for what we all been doing / On the sacred land there’s a battle brewing.”

The rocker also refers to “Big Money” as “Indian Givers” for their determination to feed an oil pipeline through land given to the Native Americans.

Young wrote the track in the past two weeks as it mentions Dale “Happy” American Horse Jr., a Native American protestor who was arrested August 31st after chaining himself to pipeline construction equipment for nearly six hours. “Saw Happy locked to the big machine / They had to cut him loose and you know what that means,” Young sings. “That’s when Happy went to jail / Behind big money justice always fails.”

Throughout the summer, the people of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation and the organization ReZpect Our Water have protested the expansion of the Dakota Access Pipeline, leading to multiple arrests. In early September, protesters clashed with the private security firm hired to protect the Dakota Access Pipeline, resulting in numerous injuries. The Obama administration stepped in to suspend the construction of the pipeline as of September 9th.

Young has long advocated against the construction of intrusive, environment-altering pipelines, previously penning the Storytone track “Who’s Gonna Stand Up?” as a protest against the Keystone XL pipeline in 2014. Young and Willie Nelson also staged a Nebraska concert in 2014 lobbying against the Keystone expansion.

Check out the lyrics to “Indian Givers” below, via Stereogum:

There’s a battle raging on the sacred land
Our brothers and sisters have to take a stand
Against us now for what we all been doing
On the sacred land there’s a battle brewing

I wish somebody would share the news

Now it’s been about 500 years
We keep taking what we gave away
Just like what we call Indian givers
It makes you sick and gives you shivers

I wish somebody would share the news

Big money going backwards and ripping the soil
Where graves are scattered and blood was boiled
When all who look can see the truth
But they just move on and keep their groove

I wish somebody would share the news

Saw Happy locked to the big machine
They had to cut him loose and you know what that means
That’s when Happy went to jail
Behind big money justice always fails

I wish somebody would share the news

Bring back the days when good was good
Lose these imposters in our neighborhood
Across our farms and through our waters
All at the cost of our sons and daughters

Our brave songs and daughters
We’re all here together fighting poison waters
Standing against the evil way
That’s what we have at the end of day

I wish somebody would share the news

Watch Sting Debut Bowie, Prince-Inspired Song ‘50,000’

OHMYGOSSIP – Sting debuted his new song “50,000” – inspired by the recent deaths of the rocker’s legendary peers like David Bowie, Prince, Lemmy and Glenn Frey – on Friday’s episode of Later… With Jools Holland. The track features on Sting’s upcoming LP 57th and 9th, his first “rock” album since 2003’s Sacred Love.

On the track, Sting reflects on what it’s like to be an aging rock star and watch as many of your contemporaries disappear with lyrics like “Another of our comrades were taken down” and “You sing his songs in some sad tribute.”

“50,000 voices rising every time he sings,” Sting croons on the chorus. “Rock stars don’t ever die / They only fade away.”

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Sting talked about “50,000” and how the recent spate of rocker deaths have the bassist wrestling with his own mortality.

“Mortality does sort of rear its head, particularly at my age – I’m 64,” Sting said. “It’s really a comment on how shocked we all are when one of our cultural icons dies: Prince, David [Bowie], Glenn Frey, Lemmy. They are our gods, in a way. So when they die, we have to question our own immortality. Even I, as a rock star, have to question my own. And the sort of bittersweet realization that hubris doesn’t mean anything in the end.”

57th and 9th is out November 11th. The album also features the previous single “I Can’t Stop Thinking About You.”

Watch Miley Cyrus’ Steamy Bob Dylan Cover With the Roots on ‘Fallon’

OHMYGOSSIP – Miley Cyrus visited The Tonight Show Friday to perform a surprise cover of Bob Dylan’s “Baby, I’m in the Mood for You.” The Roots also joined Cyrus on the sultry version of the Dylan-penned track, with Cyrus’ take inspired by singer Odetta’s famed 1965 rendition.

During the performance, Cyrus even addressed the controversy surrounding The Tonight Show‘s previous night visit from Donald Trump, where host Jimmy Fallon was accused of taking it too easy on the candidate.

“Alright everybody, how we all doin’ tonight? Here at Jimmy Fallon, everybody in the audience, everybody at home, I can’t forget about you. I wanna say thanks to you,” Cyrus sang off-the-cuff in the middle of the performance.

“There is nowhere I would rather be than in New York City playing this song with the Roots, and being on Jimmy Fallon with our host, who is always so much fun, except when you’re Donald Trump. And then don’t even think about messing with my hair, I’m serious.”

Cyrus’ presence was all over The Tonight Show Friday as the new Voice cast member talked about being on that show, gave Fallon a yoga lesson and played an uncomfortable game of Phone Booth:

DMX Joins Puff Daddy’s Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour

OHMYGOSSIP – Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs’ Bad Boy Family Reunion added another artist to its stacked lineup, branching out beyond the label’s family tree to recruit DMX for the trek. The Ruff Ryders rapper previously appeared during the tour’s opening show in Chicago September 1st.

Combs’ announced that DMX had joined the tour on Twitter Friday along with a video of the rapper rehearsing for the show and discussing his enthusiasm for joining the Family Reunion, which continues September 20th in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“I’m just grateful to be a part of it and to be as successful as I’ve been,” DMX said. “To be a part of something that’s an epic tour, and clearly something that’s going to be historical… I do what I do. I bring me to the stage. To be a part of something like this is crazy.”

Although DMX was never a member of the Bad Boy roster, he is reuniting in a sense with fellow Ruff Ryders and Bad Boy signees the Lox, who are also taking part on the Family Reunion tour alongside Ma$e, Lil Kim, Faith Evans, Mario Winans, Total, Carl Thomas and 112.

Rolling Stone recently spoke to Combs about his epic family reunion, which the mogul admitted would likely lose money because of the scale of the tour.

“To be honest, for the amount of dates we doin’, I’m losing a lot of money,” Combs said. “This is not about the money. This is about the music. This is about the people putting on a great show and making sure that they see the legacy in the right way. Every night, what I do get is the priceless payment of people giving a standing ovation and dancing for two and a half hours. That’s the only payment I need. I can’t take no money with me. There ain’t no U-Haul truck,”

In February, DMX was hospitalized in stable condition after he collapsed in a hotel parking lot as a result of what was reportedly an asthma attack.

Grimes once killed an animal

OHMYGOSSIP — Vegan singer has confessed Grimes once killed an animal.
The 28-year-old singer may be on a mission to banish the cruelty of creatures but she has admitted she once shot a living species in Canada with her grandfather.
She explained: “To be honest, it [music] just never struck me as something girls couldn’t do. Even shooting. In Montreal, that’s what you do. I mean one time I shot an animal.
“It was my living nightmare, never again. But my grandpa was like – ‘Yeah, Claire’s the best shot.’ I hadn’t been raised as a boy, but with four brothers I did everything they did.”
Despite her love for animals, the blonde beauty – whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher – views herself as a “bad vegan” because, although she’d love to follow an animal product-free diet, she finds it hard to stick to it all the time due to the amount of travelling she does.
She told InStyle magazine: “I’m a bad vegan. I’m a vegan as much as I can be but when you’re travelling on a lot of flights they just won’t give you vegan meals.”
Meanwhile, the ‘Genesis’ hitmaker – who has four albums under her belt – never planned to fall into the music world and was initially keen to go down the science route after university.
She explained: “It is weird that I am a professional musician because that was never the plan.”

Norah Jones admits her success was 'nutty'

OHMYGOSSIP — Norah Jones admits the success of her debut album was “a little nutty”.
The Grammy Award-winning star was just 23 when her debut record, ‘Come Away With Me’, sold more than 27 million copies worldwide – and Norah has confessed to being shocked by the level of attention she subsequently received.
She shared: “It was a little nutty. It all happened so fast. I didn’t know what I was doing. Maybe that’s why it worked.”
Norah, now 37, has never considered herself to be a jazz artist – and said her music has been constantly evolving ever since she released her debut album.
She told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper: “I’d played a million restaurants. I’d sung all the old jazz standards. And they are beautiful and inspiring but they’ve already been sung as well as they are ever going to be.
“So I kind of moved away and I kept moving away, because the world of music is big and I was inspired to the left or to the right but not down the same lane I started out in.”
Norah admitted that she did not have to many pre-conceived ideas or ambitions before making her soon-to-be-released new album, ‘Day Breaks’.
She said: “There was a plan … but not too much of a plan.
“I wanted somewhere I could stretch, something that I could float over the top with my voice, but really a kind of bad-ass vibe. The best part is when a song opens up and takes on its own life in the studio. That’s the magic.”

Emeli Sande lived like a 'hermit'

OHMYGOSSIP — Emeli Sande lived like a “hermit” before making her comeback.
The 29-year-old singer-songwriter enjoyed incredible success with her debut album ‘Our Version of Events’, but subsequently made a conscious decision to leave the spotlight before writing her new record ‘Long Live the Angels’, which is due out in November.
She said: “It sounds a bit dramatic but I just wanted to disappear. I just had this overwhelming sensation and the realisation everything had to stop. And then, slowly, it did.
“The label let me go and be a hermit for three years and trusted me to put together music that was important for me. I felt I had to slow everything down.
“I wanted stuff to write about and I wanted to really experience things on a deep level.
“I wanted to go back to the way I made the first album, not thinking about any anticipation, just focusing on if this is good music or not.”
Emeli revealed her sister was a major influence behind her decision to return to making music.
She told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “It definitely got to a point where the label were like, ‘Maybe someone should have a chat’.
“But it was when my sister was like, ‘You know what, you need to put out this album’ – that’s when I knew it was time to get on with it.”
Emeli – who divorced her husband Adam Gouraguine after a year of marriage – said that her soon-to-be-released new album will touch on some of her personal troubles over the last few years.
She shared: “I feel like this album is a diary. I was always writing.
“It’s very raw, very emotional. It’s a very soulful album. I’ve been 100 percent honest on this album. Everything is out there.
“If you want to get to know me, then you will with this album.”

Simon Cowell insists Fifth Harmony will be 'fine'

OHMYGOSSIP — Simon Cowell thinks Fifth Harmony will be “fine” – despite their recent troubles.
The American girl group have recently been plagued by rumours of unrest, but Simon – who signed the band to his record label – has backed them to resolve their internal problems.
Asked what is going on with the five-piece group – which features Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane, Camila Cabello, and Lauren Jauregui – Simon told The New Music Buzz: “Same with any group. You know, we have conversations about what they want to do. We’ve got to listen to them. It’ll be fine. I hope.”
Simon’s comments come shortly after Lauren took to Twitter to thank fans for their support after she broke down twice on stage during a concert.
Lauren said she was merely emotional because of the song lyrics and insisted she is now feeling much better.
Lauren – who teared up during ‘No Way’ and ‘Scared of Happy’ – tweeted: “Thankyou Texas for your amazing shows and thank you so much PHOENIX your energy was insane. And thank you guys so much for the love and concern(: I’m feeling a lot better today! Lyrics just made me extra emotional yesterday ily (sic).”
Meanwhile, Camila recently left the group’s concert in Missouri early due to anxiety.
She subsequently took to Snapchat to say sorry to fans after she left her bandmates to complete the show without her.
She said: “Hi Missouri, sorry I couldn’t finish the set last night. Was having too much anxiety and couldn’t finish it. I love u. I’m truly sorry. (sic)”

Richard Ashcroft: Bowie and Prince inspired comeback

OHMYGOSSIP — Richard Ashcroft says the deaths of David Bowie and Prince inspired his comeback.
The former Verve frontman made a return to music with his solo album ‘These People’ in May and the loss of the two musical legends made him eager to release new music.
Of what made him get back in the studio, he said: “Bowie and Prince dying definitely, even though I’d already started doing work for the album and things like that, this time because they’re such icons of music you start thinking about the fact that they can’t go to the rehearsal room or they can’t go to the studio.”
Ashcroft – who has children Sonny and Cassius with former Spiritualized keyboard player Kate Radley – said that his wife encouraged him to get back out there and now he doesn’t envisage himself ever having a break again.
He said: “I’ll be honest there are moments of insecurity in there as well where you feel like you’re not really appreciated or loved. My wife used to say you have a gift and people genuinely want to hear you play those songs. That was the spare now and I don’t really ever want to have a particular break from this and I want to see it out while I can.”
The 44-year-old singer-songwriter said when the likes of ‘Starman’ hitmaker and ‘Kiss’ singer died, it makes you realise how luck you are to be alive and able to make music.
He said: “There’s going to be periods where you lose that insight into why you’re doing it, who you are, where’s your place. Unfortunately like anything in life it sometimes takes the loss of people for you completely get clarity on what you should be doing.
And they definitely had that effect on me for the future, like David Bowie’s not going into the studio; Prince isn’t going to be performing tonight at Paisley Park.”

Jimmy Page enjoyed saying 'hello' to Robert Plant in court

OHMYGOSSIP — Jimmy Page admits it was nice to say “hello” to his old Led Zeppelin bandmate Robert Plant when the pair were reunited to defend themselves in a plagiarism case.
The two songwriters were responsible for penning the 1971 track but were accused of stealing part of their rock hit from Spirit’s 1968 song ‘Taurus’, however, the jury in the lawsuit – brought by Michael Skidmore, a trustee for late Spirit guitarist Randy California – found the case in the pair’s favour in June.
Page admits he hadn’t seen Plant for some time before they were brought together in a court in Los Angeles.
Recalling their get together in unwanted circumstances, the guitarist said: “I hadn’t seen Robert for a long time. It was nice to say hello.”
Page was relieved that the jury decided he and Plant, 68, hadn’t copied the opening chords from ‘Taurus’ and he insists the whole concept of music ownership is difficult for him to comprehend.
The music legend insists if he and his Led Zeppelin bandmates had wanted to they could have brought legal action against many artists who have borrowed from the group.
In an interview with The Daily Telegraph newspaper, he mused: “It’s like how would you define Bossa Nova? It was a whole jazz genre and it all starts with the Bossa Nova beat. That’s every Bossa Nova record. How far would the Bossa Nova movement have got in a corporate world today? It’s really disturbing. I do know there’s a lot of music where Led Zeppelin has been leaned on. We didn’t do anything about it. And I wouldn’t want to, either.”
Page has just overseen the re-mastering of the album ‘The Complete BBC Sessions’ which contains the trio of forgotten tunes, ‘I Can’t Quit You Baby’, ‘You Shook Me’ and the only recorded performance of ‘Sunshine Woman’.
Although the ‘Whole Lotta Love’ hitmaker has been responsible for preserving the Le Zeppelin legacy in the last decade he claims he doesn’t actually listen much to his band’s songs.
He wryly said: “I really don’t listen to Led Zeppelin that much.”
And Page is adamant the story of Led Zeppelin – which was also comprised of bassist John Paul Jones and late drummer John Bonham – is not over yet.
He said: “Led Zeppelin isn’t done yet, quite clearly, because every year since 1968 there’s been new fans. The re-releases have more than doubled the amount of Led Zeppelin work out there. I wanted it done authoritatively, because I was the one writing the stuff, I was the producer and mixer. I don’t think it’s any more weird than writing your autobiography.”
The last time Led Zeppelin played together – with John’s son Jason Bonham replacing his dad on drums – was in 2007 when they reunited for the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert at The O2 arena in London.
‘The Complete BBC Sessions’ is released on September 16.

David Bowie appoved Lazarus Cast Album

OHMYGOSSIP — David Bowie gave his seal of approval for the ‘Lazarus Cast Album’ to be made before he died.
The 2016 Hyundai Mercury Prize paid tribute to the late ‘Starman’ hitmaker – who tragically passed away in January at the age of 69 from cancer – on Thursday night (15.09.16) with the cast and band of the original New York production of Bowie’s musical ‘Lazarus’ performing his song of the same name.
Speaking at the awards ceremony at London’s Eventim Hammersmith, the show’s musical director Henry Hey revealed: “I got a call very early in the morning.
“I wrote to everyone saying: ‘When you wake up you will get this news but David really wanted this album and we have to make this album.’
“Everybody felt that way. It was a very beautiful day at the same time.
“At least we can be together and celebrate his music and celebrate this thing.”
Meanwhile, lead actor Michael C Hall – who performed a rendition of the Bowie song – said that the music legend was “childlike” and “ebullient” that the musical was to go ahead.
Michael told the Daily Star newspaper: “We were humbled by being entrusted to make it happen and encouraged he was so positive and inclined to express a sense of gratitude to us. He was remarkably childlike and ebullient that it was happening and that was fantastic.
“Lazarus’ opening in London is a good way of Bowie coming home.”
