Calvin Harris' New York Rihanna dash

OHMYGOSSIP — Calvin Harris fell asleep at 4am waiting for Rihanna to record vocals for ‘This Is What You Came For’ after flying to New York to get the recording.
The 32-year-old DJ flew across the US to ensure the Bajan beauty would be a part of the track after she ran out of time to head to Los Angeles to put her voice to the song, but he conked out in a hotel while waiting for her to arrive.
He said: “She was going to do it in LA. She didn’t, she couldn’t. She had to finish her album.
“So it got pushed back a couple months and then there was a day in New York, or like some hours in New York that she had free because she was on tour at the time as well.
“I said, ‘Well OK we didn’t get the vocal last time, I’m going to fly over to New York and just make sure that I get it because I really want it today.
“‘This is the only day she has on tour, if it’s not today it’s another two months, so can I come over?’
“So I checked into the Mercer and I waited for her engineer to call me. Her engineer didn’t call me and then I was texting him and I was like, ‘Is she there yet?’ she wasn’t there yet.
“In the end it was 4am I fell asleep. I woke up at like 8 to three texts from him and he was like, ‘We got it. It’s great, let me get everything together for you. And you can come pick it up tomorrow’.”
Calvin put the recording on a hard drive and then in a brown bag and made a mad dash to the airport to catch his flight.
The star was so delighted with the music he simply stared at it on the plane for a while.
Speaking on Zane Lowe’s Apple Music Beats 1 show, he added: “I get on the plane, I sat it there opposite me in the seat, I looked at it and I was just like that was like a bank heist.
“That felt incredible, knowing that I had the most important vocals that I’ve ever got and it felt amazing. I would’ve waited six months for it.”

AC/DC's Cliff Williams confirms retirement

OHMYGOSSIP — AC/DC bassist Cliff Williams has confirmed his retirement.
The 66-year-old musician previously admitted he was planning to leave the group after the end of their ‘Rock or Bust World Tour’, and he has now confirmed it is time for him to “step out” of the band.
In a video posted on the ‘Highway to Hell’ hitmakers’ YouTube channel, Cliff stated: “It’s time for me to step out, that’s all. I’m ready to get off the road and do what I do in between tours.
“I couldn’t have asked for anything more – being with the people I’m with, and have been, being in this situation with this band, playing this music.”
Cliff first joined the ‘Back in Black’ musicians in 1977 as a replacement for their original bassist Mark Evans.
After founding guitarist Malcolm Young retired in 2014 due to dementia, Cliff became the band’s second most senior member after Angus Young.
In July this year, Cliff announced he was planning to retire because the band had become a “changed animal” over the years, highlighting drummer Phil Rudd’s situation after he was placed on house arrest, and that frontman Brian Johnson had pulled out of shows due to the threat of “total deafness”.
Speaking at the time, Cliff said: “It’s been what I’ve known for the past 40 years, but after this tour I’m backing off of touring and recording.
“Losing Malcolm, the thing with Phil and now with Brian, it’s a changed animal. I feel in my gut it’s the right thing.”

Culture Club to reunite for one-off London show

OHMYGOSSIP — Culture Club have announced a one-off London show.
The iconic 80s pop group – fronted by Boy George – will bring their biggest hits to The SSE Wembley Arena on December 14.
There they will perform songs from their back catalogue including ‘Karma Chameleon’ and ‘Do You Really Want to Hurt Me’.
The show will see original band members, Mike Craig, Roy Hay and Jon Moss, reunite on stage together in the UK for the first time since 2002 when they did a 20th anniversary concert at the Royal Albert Hall.
In 2006, the band attempted to get back together but without lead singer Boy George, who was to be replaced, but the idea folded.
Five years later in 2011, the band reformed without Jon and in 2014 they performed on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ with Boy George.
The show announcement comes ahead of the release of their new album, ‘Tribes’, which is expected to be released later this year.
Boy George – who announced he will not be returning as a judge on ‘The Voice UK’ next year – previously said that he wanted to bring their sixth studio album out when they have the “best social presence”.
He said: “I want it to come out when we have our best social presence.”
The iconic 80s band were due to release ‘Tribes’ in 2014, but the singer had complications with his vocal chords and so they had to postpone it.
Talking about how fit he is for touring, George recently revealed how he has to have silent days as a part of his throat therapy and joked how it is “very difficult when ordering lunch”.
He previously said: “That means you don’t speak at all, yeah … As you get older, you do need to do different things in order to get through tours and performances. I’ve been working with an incredible vocal coach in the U.K.
“The silence thing is a really good thing to do after a show. You kind of just don’t talk. It makes it very difficult when you’re ordering lunch.”
Tickets for Culture Club’s The SSE Wembley Arena show go on sale on September 23 from www.culture-club.co.uk

Bastille have 'no interest' in fame

OHMYGOSSIP — Bastille have “no interest” in being famous.
The ‘Good Grief’ hitmakers – comprised of Dan Smith, Chris ‘Woody’ Wood, Will Farquarson and Kyle Simmons – are happy as long as they can make music and play festivals and would much rather keep out of the limelight.
Frontman Dan, 30, said: “We feel very lucky, we love making songs, but have no interest in being famous at all.
“It’s great when we play festivals and then be anonymous.
“We don’t sit around gobbing off about things so people aren’t as interested in us as people, and we’re totally fine with that.
“Enough people are interested in our music, and that’s what counts.”
Will, who plays keyboard for the indie band, said that it would be “horrible” if they were at the same level of fame as pop superstar Britney Spears.
Recalling a trip to a clothes shop , where the cashier was singing to their song and was oblivious to who he was, Will said: “I was buying a jacket and a Bastille song was playing and the girl serving me was singing along, but had no idea who I was. That was a great moment.
“If you’re Britney Spears everyone knows who you are – fame like that would be horrible.”
Bastille recently released their second LP ‘Wild World’ and the album deals with large scale issues.
Explaining the theme behind their follow-up to 2013’s ‘Bad Blood’, Dan told the Daily Star newspaper: “The album is about how it feels to be watching the news and be knocked sideways by it.
“How the f*** do you process the news at the moment?”

Drake records new songs

OHMYGOSSIP — Drake has almost an albums’ worth of songs recorded.
The ‘One Dance’ rapper brought his ‘Summer Sixteen Tour’ to Tacoma Dome in Washington in the US on Sunday night (18.09.16) and told the crowd that he has finished “six or seven” tracks, but he doesn’t know whether they’ll be on a new record or a separate project.
He told the packed out auditorium: “I’ve been on this tour and I’ve been recording new music.
“I’m about maybe six or seven new songs in. Just getting warmed up.
“I don’t know where they are going to end up or what it’s going to be, but I can’t wait to come back to Tacoma and play that s*** for you.”
The 29-year-old musician’s announcement comes after Kanye West revealed the pair are collaborating together.
The ‘Fade’ hitmaker teased with the ‘Hotline Bling’ star last month when a billboard was put up in Los Angeles showing Kanye’s GOOD Music record label logo with Drake’s OVO emblem and Kanye later confirmed suspicions they are working together.
He previously said: “We’re just working on music, working on a bunch of music together, just having fun going into the studio. We’re working on an album, so there’s some exciting things coming up soon.”
Kanye held off on giving any more information on the potential collaborative album but it wouldn’t be the first time the rap stars have worked together.
Drake helped co-write ’30 Hours’ from Kanye’s ‘Life of Pablo’ LP, and Kanye lent his vocals to the original version of ‘Pop Style’ – alongside Jay-Z – from Drake’s album ‘Views’.
Both rappers have also done collaborative albums in the past, with Kanye working with Jay-Z on ‘Watch The Throne’ and Drake teaming up with Future for ‘What a Time to Be Alive’.
Meanwhile, during a surprise appearance during Drake’s set at Canada’s OVO Festival in early August, Kanye once again teased the possibility of a collaboration.
He asked the crowd: “Toronto, I got one question for you.Is y’all ready for this album? Now, I’m not talking about ‘Pablo’. I wasn’t talking about ‘Views’. I wanna ask y’all right now, y’all ready for this album?”
Whilst Drake added: “What my brother was asking before was, are you ready if we make an album? That’s what he was asking.”

Sky Ferreira hints at new music

OHMYGOSSIP — Sky Ferreira is to release new music this week.
The 24-year-old singer has dropped the biggest hint yet she is to reveal new material from her long-anticipated second studio album ‘Masochism’, which was first announced in April 2015.
Taking to Instagram over the weekend to post a picture of what looked like a still from a music video, she wrote: “Editing. Lots of surprises next week hint hint nudge nudge #Masochism”
The ‘I Blame Myself’ hitmaker admitted in February she planned to release the record at some point this year.
She said: “I started writing the lyrics two years ago when I was touring, and that’s when the name came to me.
“The way I look at it, it’s about going from one thing to another. I’ve learned a lot about myself and my own self-value. Before, in order to feel good about anything there had to be some kind of struggle, a painful way to get to it, otherwise I felt I didn’t really deserve it. Which is a really f**ked up way of thinking.”
Last July, Sky revealed she had health issues which had resulted in the video for her song ‘Guardian’ being delayed.
She said: “I’ve had health issues within the last few months, so I needed to get better before I started releasing and playing shows again without complications.”

Katy Perry 'confirms' 2017 tour

OHMYGOSSIP — Katy Perry has appeared to confirm she is going on tour next year.
The 31-year-old singer will play at least one concert in 2017 after revealing such plans when responding to a Twitter troll who hit out at her career and standalone track ‘Rise’, claiming it was a “flop”.
In a Q&A with fans, one tweeter wrote to Katy: “Rise flopped and your career is over.”
The raven-haired beauty responded: “See you at my show 2K17.”
Several of Katy’s fans picked up on the reference and started to get excited about a tour happening next year.
One wrote: “so we’re getting a tour in 2017 (sic)”
Another posted: “omg did you just announce your TOUR?? (sic)”
One tweeted: “So are you admitting that the tour is coming in 2017! (sic)”
Katy recorded ‘Rise’ for NBC Sports’ coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympics, but the song didn’t manage to break into the top 10 in the UK or the US.
The tune peaked at number 11 in America and 25 in the UK Singles Chart.
Katy – who is dating actor Orlando Bloom – recently admitted she was working on a fifth album but “not rushing” the record.
She said: “I’m just having a lot of fun, but experimenting and trying different producers, and different collaborators, and different styles.”
Earlier this month, Katy admitted in another Twitter Q&A that she would be prepared to end her feud with Taylor Swift if the ‘Blank Space’ hitmaker apologises to her.
When asked if she would work with the blonde stunner, Katy replied: “If she says sorry, sure!”
The pair have had an ongoing feud ever since the 26-year-old star claimed the ‘Unconditionally’ singer nicked three of her backing dancers from her ‘RED Tour’ in 2012.

JoJo's abrasive album

OHMYGOSSIP — JoJo has included plenty of expletives on her new album to “shake people up”.
The 25-year-old star – who shot to fame with track ‘Leave (Get Out)’ when she was just 14 – has admitted she curses all the time when she is with her friends so didn’t want to omit such language from her new record ‘Mad Love’, and thought her track ‘F**k Apologies’ was the best single to drop first.
She said: “I don’t like censorship but we’re going to radio as ‘No Apologies’. I do understand.
“The idea behind it is I’m not going to make excuses for who I am, and if others don’t like it they can go f**k themselves!
“I believe in using abrasive language to shake people up. I talk like a sailor in my personal life so I won’t hide that.”
The brunette star – who hasn’t released an album since 2006 record ‘The High Road’ – has learnt a lot after more than a decade in the music industry, and is planning to be “more in control” of her music this time around.
She added to the Daily Star newspaper: “I’ve changed, I’m a young woman now as opposed to a teenager.
“I’m more in control and this time it will be different. I’m not chasing what I did back then, this isn’t that.
“I’ve learnt so much about myself, I’ve learnt so much about the industry but I’m still figuring out how to navigate it.
“I’ll always be learning, but things have changed – it was a long time ago.”
JoJo – whose real name is Joanna Levesque – first released a self-titled album in 2004.

Robbie Williams to go on year-long tour

OHMYGOSSIP — Robbie Williams is to go on a year-long tour.
The ‘Let Me Entertain You’ hitmaker will hit the road when he drops his hotly-anticipated 11th studio album, and the upcoming run of gigs will be “very different to anything he’s done” before and fans can expect a more “mature” stage show from the 42-year-old singer.
A source told The Sun newspaper: “Robbie loves being on the road and this is his most ambitious tour ever.
“His tour company is already working non-stop to make it the biggest and best yet. But it’s very different to anything he’s done.
“There will be surprise guests, and, although he loves the theatre of performing there’ll be a sense that he’s matured. It’s a pretty defining series of shows.”
Robbie looks set to have a busy 2017 as he has already agreed to join his former Take That band mates Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald when they embark on a series of shows next year in celebration of the group’s 25th anniversary.
Following the group’s triumphant British Summer Time Hyde Park show in July, Gary said: “It’s got us talking about next year. To only do one date a year, from what we’ve seen, everyone is like, ‘We can’t wait any longer.’
“We are definitely going to do another tour next year. The Three of us. Then at the end of next year is our 25th anniversary so I’d imagine we would do a tour with Robbie.”
A source previously said: “Gary has always been the planner and his mind is now focused on the 25 project. Robbie says he is up for coming back and performing again.
“He feels that he is at peace with the group and wants to help commemorate their astonishing rise.”

Bros to reunite

OHMYGOSSIP — Bros are to reunite.
The 1980s boy band – made up of twin brothers Matt and Luke Goss – are to return to the stage for a £10 million European tour nearly 25 years after they called it a day.
According to the Mail on Sunday newspaper, the siblings have settled their differences and plan to put on the run of gigs for their fans.
Craig Logan, who played bass in the group until 1989 when he quit due to pressures of fame and several bouts of illness, is not thought to be taking part in the reunion.
Matt is expected to announce Bros’ return at his solo gig at Wembley on October 1.
From 1986 to 1992, Bros had hits with the likes of ‘When Will I Be Famous?’ and ‘I Owe You Nothing’, releasing three studio albums, ‘Push’, ‘The Time’ and ‘Changing Faces’.
They have since dropped three greatest hits records, with their final one, ‘I Owe You Nothing – The Best of Bros’, coming in February 2011.
Bros split in 1992 when their singles began to plunge in the charts and Luke called time on the group, which Matt has since admitted was “heart-breaking”.
The 47-year-old star, who has reinvented himself as a singer in Las Vegas, previously admitted the brothers’ relationship suffered after their split.
He said: “We felt we needed a break from each other. Luke to this day is still one of my best friends.”
Matt has also admitted him and Luke would be keen to reform if the money was right.
Speaking in 2013, he said: “I think we’re all under the same thinking: make us an offer.
“That’s really how we all feel. But it’s got to be outrageous. I want people to come away and say, ‘That was one of the most decadent bands.’ We were not a boy band. I didn’t do choreography, Luke was a drummer, Craig was a bass player. We didn’t do Duran Duran or Wham! or Spandau [Ballet].”

Green Day postpone tour dates

OHMYGOSSIP — Green Day have postponed three of their US tour dates.
The ‘American Idiot’ hitmakers have been forced to cancel their gigs in St. Louis, Chicago and Detroit on September 20, 21 and 24 respectively for the time being after they were recently struck down with a mystery illness.
The band – consisting of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool – announced the news on their website.
They’ve also decided to pull the plug on their show at the World Cup of Hockey Fan Village in Toronto on September 23 completely and are not planning to reschedule the date.
They said: “Green Day regretfully must postpone three of the first four dates of their upcoming tour and must cancel the Toronto appearance, all due to illness affecting several members of the band and its crew. We’re so sad to announce we have to postpone three shows and cancel Toronto. Many of us have been battling this infection for days on end to be ready, and it just got the best of us.”
The ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’ musicians insisted that all shows except Toronto will be rescheduled when their schedule permits, and that all original tickets will still be valid. They also said that fans seeking a refund for tickets can do so at their point of purchase.

How Deap Vally Found Independence, Liberation in ‘Femejism’

OHMYGOSSIP — Deap Vally’s fiery take on rock – which hoovers up bits from blues, metal, punk and any other genres that might sufficiently do their bidding – has slashed its own path since guitarist-vocalist Lindsey Troy and drummer-vocalist Julie Edwards first teamed up in 2011. On their new album Femejism, out today, the band take their sound to new places, stripping it down and building it back up even bigger while retaining their sly sense of humor and larger-than-life braggadocio.

Femijism is out in the States via Nevado Music and represents a new chapter for Deap Vally – one of complete creative independence following their 2013 debut on Island. While Deap Vally have always been a band that puts their strong point of view front and center, the liberation surrounding Femijism‘s release adds an extra kick to an already high-octane band. “Post Funk” is heightened nerves over a raucous disco; “Teenage Queen” exudes thrash-y swagger and “Critic,” is a track surrounded by tape hiss where Troy sings “Everyone is, everyone is/A fuckin’ critic, a fuckin’ cynic.” It’s a new tack for a band that’s specialized in rafter-shaking rock, and it lands in the middle of the record like a pipe bomb.

“I came up with the idea pretty quickly,” recalls Troy from Oslo, where Deap Vally is touring with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. “I recorded it on my phone, and then I played it for Julie, who really liked how the phone recording sounded – it was super lo-fi, and I was singing it quietly because it was late at night. We realized it had an interesting delivery that way, so we went for that sonic atmosphere with the song when we recorded its first half. … It was really special for me to see that song materialize into a full thing; when I wrote it I was having a moment of frustrating with everything, and it was very pure, unfiltered venting.”

That pure, unfiltered feeling runs throughout Femejism, which is packed with unbridled feeling. Troy’s yelp is one of the most startling in rock right now, coming in white-hot with lyrics that slice through niceties (particularly on the defiant “Smile More,” which takes on expectations about women and age), while the pairing of her arena-ready riffs with Edwards’ storm-the-gates drums make for glorious noise.

“We really were letting ourselves be open to whatever came through us,” says Troy. “We were working with [Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist] Nick Zinner, and his guidance was, ‘Don’t be neurotic about if it sounds like Deap Vally or not. You can worry about that later. Just write.’ That was very liberating, to not have to be analyzing what we were working on while we were doing it.”

“We had complete freedom,” says Edwards. “We basically financed the record ourselves, and there was nobody waiting to hear versions or demos or give input or anything like that. We had this beautiful, wonderful freedom to express our creativity and our vision and our points of view.”

Financing Femejism themselves meant that Deap Vally had to go into a crash course about the music business, turning the broadside put forth in their early single “Gonna Make My Own Money” into a fact of their musical life.

“When you’re on a major label, you go from being an artist and a musician to being the president of an enormous company with thousands of moving parts and tons of employees and outside contractors,” says Edwards. “Most musicians aren’t prepared to be in that position, so what happens is, someone else guides the business for you while you stay on the music end. This transition we’ve been going through, which at times has been really challenging and rough, has been us figuring out all the aspects of our business, and starting to control all the aspects of our business.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s very liberating and really empowering. It’s super challenging, but it’s also realistic in a way. Rather than us chasing this mythological dream of someone making everything happen for us, or everything happening with us understanding the way it works, we’re fully aware of the inner workings of the machine. It’s fun to get in there and be creative with the way we’re going to take ourselves through it.”

That creativity extends to the title of the album, which flips one of 2016’s hottest clickbait buzzwords into something … different.

“The title is cool because it’s open to a lot of interpretation,” says Troy. “Obviously being women and feminism is something we’re constantly asked about, which is kind of annoying because guys aren’t always asked about being men in bands. When Julie first told me the name I hated it, and then it grew on me. But I kind of liked that about it – I liked that it’s slightly revolting at first, and that it made you think.”
