Ryan Tedder: Beyonce likes 'honest and raw' songs

OHMYGOSSIP — Beyonce only wants to record “honest and raw” songs.
OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder has a reputation for penning huge pop hits for the likes of Taylor Swift, Adele, and Ariana Grande, but he insists his and other songwriters’ status don’t matter to the ‘Crazy in Love’ hitmaker – for whom he wrote ‘XO’ and ‘Halo’ – as she’s only interested in what the tracks have to say.
He said: “Beyonce has passed on more hits than you can imagine and no melody or famous producer means a thing to her. She is all about the lyrics; it has to be honest and raw.
“‘Halo’ was written in a few hours, but I wrote ‘XO’ imagining myself as Beyonce, looking out and finding one person in a crowd. I got inside her head, and she took it because it was something that she truly felt.”
But when working with Ariana, showing off her impressive vocal range is the priority.
Ryan said: “With Ariana, I know she wants to showcase her vocal range. People ask if I have a formula. I don’t, but with Ariana, there is a trick. If I can figure out what key her voice sounds most electrifying in, I know it will work.”
The 37-year-old songwriter likes to “assume the personality” of the people he writes for and enjoys having to “keep pace” with Taylor and her likes and dislikes.
He told Grazia magazine: “When I write for someone else, I assume their personality. My first question is always, ‘What are you listening to?’ Taylor is so smart and savvy so you have to keep pace.
“When we wrote ‘Welcome to New York’, she was listening to a lot of stuff from the 80s and wanted that sound. I brought a 1984 keyboard and started playing the opening chords. She was just like, ‘That’s it!’ It was simple.”

'True artist' Zayn Malik

OHMYGOSSIP — Zayn Malik has been hailed as a “true artist”.
The 23-year-old singer worked with producer Malay on his debut solo album ‘Mind of Mine’ and he was hugely impressed with Zayn’s vision and creativity.
In an excerpt from the singer’s autobiography, ‘Zayn’, obtained by Complex magazine, Malay said: “Zayn is a true artist. He’s got vision and he’s pretty clear about what he wants to do. It also helps that he’s really creative – he’s always drawing, painting or writing stuff; he’s reading all the time, and it comes out in his lyrics. He’s just forever exercising that part of his brain, and I’m excited to see where he ends up. This is just the beginning for him. Now that he’s getting started, I can only imagine where he’s going to be in a few years.”
And while Zayn loved collaborating with Malay, he admitted he found him “weird” at first.
He said: “I remember the first time we went into the studio with him, I thought he was a bit of a weirdo. Not in a bad way, I have my fair share of weirdness at times. Malay was just such a strange, unique human being.
“I’m more of a beer or whisky guy, but Malay somehow got me into drinking wine. I still don’t do the swirl it around in the glass thing though – I’ll leave that one to him.”
In another excerpt from his eponymous autobiography, Zayn claimed he felt relieved to sing about sex after leaving boyband One Direction in March 2015.
Despite many of One Direction’s songs, including ‘No Control’, ‘Live While We’re Young’, ‘Change Your Ticket’, ‘Kiss You’ and ‘Temporary Fix’, referencing sex, Zayn wrote: “Every lyric I’ve ever written has a story behind it. All the hard work that went into the creation of ‘Pillowtalk’ was worthwhile because, as soon as it was finished, I intuitively felt I was on the right path.
“It was a sick cut, nailing the exact sound I wanted to capture in my music. I was also able to sing about a subject that I hadn’t really been able to go near while I was in One Direction: sex.”

One Direction have held reunion talks

OHMYGOSSIP — One Direction have held discussions about their reunion.
The band – Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson – are currently taking an extended hiatus to focus on solo projects but Niall says they have already talked about when they will make their comeback.
Speaking on ‘The Graham Norton Show’, he said: “For now we are doing our own thing. We can’t put a date on it but it won’t be in 50 years. It’s in the foreseeable future. We’ve talked about it, but for now we’ll just play it by ear and see what happens.”
Niall recently released his first solo single ‘This Town’ and can’t believe the “insane” reaction to it from fans.
He said: “I’ve been sitting on it for so long and keeping it a secret. It was a nerve-wracking time. It’s always been a daunting prospect but the reaction has been insane. I am 100 per cent relieved that people like it.”
After One Direction went on hiatus earlier this year, Niall decided to go backpacking with his friends and began work on his solo music once he got back.
He said: “When I got back from Asia I just started doing acoustic stuff- the stuff I grew up on- and thought, ‘Maybe I should release them. They’re actually not that bad.'”
He signed a deal with Capitol US and says his debut solo album will be released next year.

Oasis' Be Here Now created Kasabian

OHMYGOSSIP — Noel Gallagher was told by Kasabian that Oasis’ third album ‘Be Here Now’ inspired them to form a band.
The 1997 LP has just been re-released on Big Brother Recordings as part of the band’s ‘Chasing The Sun’ series and Noel revisited the record for to remix ‘D’You Know What I Mean?’ – the first single from the record which was number one in several countries – and sort through the demos which come with the album.
‘Be Here Now; splits opinion amongst Oasis fans and Noel has often described it as his least favorite album with the group.
However, Kasabian stars Tom Meighan and Sergio Pizzorno told their friend Noel that if it weren’t for that LP they wouldn’t have created their group, and shock rocker Marilyn Manson also told the guitarist it is one of his favorite LPs of all-time which has made him re-think his opinion of the songs.
In an interview with Keith Cameron, Noel said: “Kasabian, they f***ing die for this album. That’s what made them be in a group. So who’s to say (what it is)?
“I sat up with Marilyn Manson one night and he went on about that record for longer than the record lasts, and that’s 72 minutes! He was saying it’s such a big influence on him.”
Noel’s intention was to remix all 12 tracks that feature on ‘Be Here Now’ but he stopped after completing ‘NG’s 2016 Rethink’ of ‘D’You Know What I Mean?’ because it took so long.
The 49-year-old songwriter instead believes the album deserves to be listened to in its original format even though it was recorded by him, his brother Liam Gallagher and the rest of the band while drunk and high on drugs.
He said: “Coyley and Phil, my pals from Manchester, summed this album up best. They’ve always said, ‘It was just meant to be played once, on that day, high as a kite, preferably in the park, p***ed – then never listened to again. Why didn’t I think of that?!
“The final mix of the album is shocking. All the things you shouldn’t do when you’re mixing a record, we were doing tenfold … But they were crazy times. A lot of drinking, and a lot of not thinking straight. Our management’s philosophy is to keep the band working at all costs, because if they stop working it’ll fall apart. So it was exciting but exhausting as well. You’re the biggest band in the world, making this much anticipated new record, it was the birth of celebrity culture and what became known as Britpop had crossed over. I was constantly having a microphone shoved into my face. No way to make a record.”
The reissue of ‘Be Here Now’ contains unheard song ‘If We Shadows’, a demo version of ‘Trip Inside (Be Here Now)’ which became ‘Be Here Now’ on the final tracklisting and a disc of demo versions of the songs recorded on the Caribbean island of Mustique.
It also has all the B-sides from the album’s singles, including highlights such as ‘Stay Young’, ‘Angel Child’ and ‘Going Nowhere’.
‘Be Here Now – Chasing The Sun Edition’ comes in the following formats: Standard CD and digital download, Special Edition 3 x CD and deluxe digital download, 12in vinyl LP with download code for two volumes of bonus content and the limited edition Super Deluxe Box Set – which includes LP, Special Edition 3 x CD, hardback coffee table book with new sleeve notes, exclusive vinyl plus a 12in white label sampler of the ‘Mustique demos’ and Oasis merchandise.

Leonard Cohen: I'm 'ready to die'

OHMYGOSSIP — Leonard Cohen is “ready to die”.
The 82-year-old singer songwriter says he is at peace with death and is keen to “tie up the strings” on some of his unreleased music if he can.
He said: “The big change is the proximity to death. I am a tidy kind of guy. I like to tie up the strings if I can. If I can’t, that’s OK. But my natural thrust is to finish things that I’ve begun.
“I don’t think I’ll be able to finish those songs. Maybe, who knows? And maybe I’ll get a second wind, I don’t know. But I don’t dare attach myself to a spiritual strategy. I don’t dare do that. I’ve got some work to do. Take care of business. I am ready to die. I hope it’s not too uncomfortable. That’s about it for me.”
And Leonard feels he has more time now as he is “filled with many fewer distractions” because his children are all grown up.
He added: “I am filled with many fewer distractions than other times in my life and [I’m able] to work with a little more concentration and continuity than when I had duties of making a living, being a husband, being a father. Those distractions are radically diminished at this point. The only thing that mitigates against full production is just the condition of my body.”
The ‘Hallelujah’ hitmaker is enjoying “putting his house in order” and feels very blessed to have such a wonderful family.
Speaking in a profile for The New Yorker, he added: “In a certain sense I’ve never had it better …
“At a certain point, if you still have your marbles and are not faced with serious financial challenges, you have a chance to put your house in order. Putting your house in order, if you can do it, is one of the most comforting activities, and the benefits of it are incalculable.”

Roger Waters is working on a new album

OHMYGOSSIP — Roger Waters is working on a new album with Nigel Godrich.
The former Pink Floyd frontman has confirmed he is in the studio with the Radiohead producer putting together an album to follow 1992’s ‘Amused To Death’.
He said: “We’ve got some really good work in the can. Nigel’s really good. He said to me, ‘People always want to do these long records. How long was ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon?’ I said 38 minutes …
“I wrote this whole thing – part magic carpet ride, part political rant, part anguish. I played this to Nigel, and he goes, ‘Oh, I like that little bit’ – about two minutes long – ‘and that bit’.” And so we’ve been working.
“I’ve also been falling in love, deeply in love. So the record is really about love – which is what all of my records have been about, in fact. It’s pondering not just why we are killing the children. It’s also the question of how do we take these moments of love – if we are granted any in our lives – and allow that love to shine on the rest of existence, on others.”
And Roger feels for musicians just starting out in the industry as he says “nobody pays” for music anymore.
He told Rolling Stone magazine: “There are no constraints on records now because nobody pays you anything for them. So everything’s off the table. I so feel for young musicians, knowing that all of your work will be stolen, and nobody wants to pay you. It also means you can say anything you want. Well, I’ve always said anything I’ve wanted anyway.”

The Chainsmokers record in the daytime

OHMYGOSSIP — The Chainsmokers only record in the daytime.
The ‘Closer’ duo – which includes Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall – prefer to work on their music in normal working hours and “can’t understand” why other artists regularly work late into the night.
Alex said: “I treat it like a job. I’ve had rappers be like, ‘Let’s meet up at 10 p.m.’ And I’m like, ‘Uh, no!’ I can’t understand that way of working.”
However, Alex made an exception when he hit the studio with Chris Martin because the Coldplay frontman – who he described as “the f***ing greatest” – was keen to start “after he put his kids to bed”.
Andrew and Alex are very close but do like to have time away from each other too.
He added: “We met in order to work together, but we’ve gotten close. We’ve fought like, one time, in Mexico, about I don’t remember what. We’d just been at a strip club and we beat each other up in the back of a cab. We have a photo we took of ourselves all bloody afterward! It was just a moment of tequila-driven madness.
“When we both moved to Los Angeles, we were like, ‘Should we get a sick house together?’ And it was like, ‘Let’s each have this one place apart from each other.'”
And the duo are hoping that one day their live shows will be as successful as Beyoncé or Kanye West’s.
Andrew shared to Rolling Stone magazine: “We can do so much more than just DJ. We look at Beyoncé and we’re like, ‘I want to build a live show that’s talked about and respected as much as hers, or Kanye’s.’ We want to add performance elements.”

Little Mix want rapper on new album

OHMYGOSSIP — Little Mix have teased their plans to get a rapper on their new LP ‘Glory Days’.
The girl group – who won ‘The X Factor’ in 2011 under the guise of mentor Tulisa Contostavlos – will release their fourth album on November 18 and singer Jesy Nelson has spoken of plans to have someone spit lyrics on one of their tracks.
She said: “It would be great to get a rapper on the record, we’d love to have one feature, we can’t say who we have in mind just yet.”
The ‘Black Magic’ hitmakers – also comprised of Perrie Edwards, Jade Thirlwall and Leigh-Anne Pinnock – released lead single ‘Shout Out To My Ex’ earlier this week, which is reportedly aimed at band member Perrie Edward’s former fiancé Zayn Malik, who left the pop beauty devastated last year when he called off their engagement, and she has hit back in the band’s forthcoming single which is said to mock his sexual prowess.
On the track, she sings: “I hope she gettin’ better sex, Hope she ain’t fakin’ it like I did, babe.”
Perrie, 23, says it is the “perfect” lead single” and shows what fans can expect from their new album.
She told the Daily Star newspaper: “We’re really proud and excited about our new album and can’t wait to share our music with everyone.
“Shout Out To My Ex’ was unanimously our favourite choice for the first single. It’s the perfect taster for what is to come!”

Charli XCX unveils new single After the Afterparty

OHMYGOSSIP — Charli XCX has unveiled her new single ‘After the Afterparty’.
The 24-year-old pop beauty has teamed up with American rapper Lil Yachty for her first new music since her EP ‘Vroom Vroom’ – which was released early this year – and fans can expect to download the new track on October 28, according to a listing on iTunes.
The ‘Boom Clap’ hitmaker – who’s last record was 2014’s ‘Sucker’ – has teamed up with both of her longtime collaborators SOPHIE and Stargate for her third studio album.
The ‘Doing It’ singer said she got them together because she wanted to mix their different styles to make a record of “progressive pop music”.
On her decision to work with SOPHIE – who produced her ‘Vroom Vroom’ – she previously said: “I didn’t want to make just an album with SOPHIE, and I didn’t want to make just an album with Stargate.
“I wanted to make an album with SOPHIE and Stargate. Sure, some of SOPHIE’s records are a little harsh and off-the-wall, but the goal is to be making progressive pop music.”
Charli brought them together because she knew they would gel well, despite her label wanting her to work with Stargate – a production duo comprised of Mikkel Storleer Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen – most known for their work with Beyonce, Rihanna and Ne-Yo.
Charli feels it is important for artists to “shake things up” from time to time and has been incredibly inspired by some of her collaborators.
She previously said: “I think it always needs a shake up and I think multiple artists do that but I want to push it.
“I’ve been collaborating with people from PC Music so that’s been very inspiring for me – the way they think about music and the way that they create music and transferring that into like a more pop realm is something that is cool and yeah, it’s next level! I’m not really saying too much about it right now because I just want it to talk for itself. And it will.”

Snoop Dogg resurrects Puff Puff Pass Tour

OHMYGOSSIP — Snoop Dogg is to hit the road with the likes of Warren G after resurrecting his 2001 ‘Puff Puff Pass Tour’.
The ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’ hitmaker has brought back his special run of gigs 15 years after they took place and has enlisted the help of several associates to help him along the way, including Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Tha Dogg Pound, DJ Quick, the Pomona City Movement and the LBC Movement.
Snoop announced the ‘Puff Puff Pass Tour Part 2’ on his Instagram account by sharing an image of the schedule and adding the caption: “The Puff Puff Pass Tour Part 2 with Snoop Dogg, Bone Thugs, Warren G, DJ Quik & The Dogg Pound!! Featuring Pomona City Movement & LBC Movement! ON SALE NOW!!! Special Meet & Greet Packages at www.puffpuffpasstour.com (sic)”
The rapper has announced just 10 dates for now all in North America throughout December, but more shows are expected in the future.
It comes after the 44-year-old star admitted last month he wants to do a “joint tour” with the likes of Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar and Eminem.
He said: “I think [a joint tour] makes sense more than anything. A Snoop-Dre album would be amazing, but a tour even more, because we have legendary music the world has yet to see us perform globally. I’m pretty sure he wants to do it. He just wants the team in place. Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre – that’s the dream team for him.”
Snoop’s original ‘Puff Puff Pass’ tour was released as a DVD.

Jon Bon Jovi singing on a Prayer for high notes

OHMYGOSSIP — Jon Bon Jovi regrets putting a key change in his biggest hit ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ because he struggles to sing it now he’s 54.
The rocker loves to wow fans with the classic song on stage but now he’s started the approach to his 60th birthday he finds it very hard to hit the same high noes he could when he co-wrote the track back in 1986 when he was 24.
He said: “If I could meet the 18-year-old me, my only advice would be this, ‘Stop before the key change in ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’! Stop! You don’t need it!’ I’m 54 now and every night I’m about to sing it I go, ‘F**K!’ ”
Jon has seen his band enjoy many ups and downs since they burst on the music scene in the 1980s with the surge of grunge in the 90s hurting their drawing power due to them being synonymous with the ‘hair metal’ scene.
But the frontman has never tried to change Bon Jovi’s sound or follow fads because it won’t work for your music.
He explained: “You’ve just got to be true to who you are, be sure your songs represent your truth. Don’t follow fads or fashions – because you’ll always be a day late!”
Bon Jovi are just about to release their new album ‘This House Is Not For Sale’, their first LP since 2013’s ‘What About Now’.
Jon admits he struggled to find the inspiration to write new songs after completing the group’s last tour and had to wait before penning his tracks.
He said: “I was not ready, in 2014, to put into those words what were my thoughts, but I was confident that in time I would have something to say. The writing began in 2015 and was completed by the spring.”
