Mick Jagger releases two new songs

OHMYGOSSIP — Sir Mick Jagger has released two new songs.
The 74-year-old rocker wrote ‘Gotta Get a Grip’ and ‘England Lost’ – which features Skepta – in April and wanted to release them straight away, rather than wait for an album.
The Rolling Stones frontman explained the tracks are a response to the “confusion and frustration with the times we live in” and the result of “anxiety, unknowability of the changing political situation.”
He added: “It’s always refreshing to get creative in a different fashion and I feel a slight throwback to a time when you could be a bit more free and easy by recording on the hoof and putting it out there immediately.
“I didn’t want to wait until next year when these two tracks might lose any impact and mean nothing.”
Mick is delighted to have Skepta on ‘England Lost’, because he thinks the grime star is a very exciting new artist.
He said: “Right from the off when I started writing ‘England Lost’, I imagined having a British rapper on the track… Skepta stepped in at a moment’s notice and I just loved what he did.”
The song is “ostensibly” about seeing England lose a soccer game, but the title gave it more importance.
He explained: “It’s about the unknowability about where you are and the feeling of insecurity. That’s how I was feeling when I was writing. It’s obviously got a fair amount of humour because I don’t like anything too on the nose but it’s also got a sense of vulnerability of where we are as a country.”
Meanwhile, ‘Gotta Get a Grip’ is about taking charge of the future.
Mick said: “The message I suppose is – despite all those things that are happening, you gotta get on with your own life, be yourself and attempt to create your own destiny.”
The veteran musician has released videos for both tracks and the songs are available to buy now.

Stereophonics name 10th LP Scream Above The Sounds

OHMYGOSSIP — Stereophonics have announced their new album will be called ‘Scream Above The Sounds’.
The Welsh rock group have been hard at work on their follow-up to 2015’s ‘Keeping the Village Alive’ for the best part of a year and frontman Kelly Jones is relieved they’ve completed it, joking that he was worried he would be “ancient” by the time it gets released.
Taking to Twitter to unveil details of their 10th LP, they wrote: “We are delighted to announce our new album #ScreamAboveTheSounds. Pre-order now from http://stereophonics.com. (sic)”
Speaking to Radio X about the record, Kelly, 43, said: “This has been finished about 11 months, so I’ll be glad when it gets out, as otherwise I’ll be ancient.”
The album includes lead single ‘All In one Night’, which the Kelly wrote when he was stranded in a hotel in China.
The ‘Maybe Tomorrow’ hitmaker also explained that the record has an array of different sounds on there.
He said: “There’s a lot of different songs on the album, lot of different styles of songs on the album. I think it’s quite an uplifting record, you know.
“But this song particularly I wrote in a hotel room in China, we were stuck there for a day before we had to get a flight home.”
Stereophonics hit the music scene in 1997 with ‘Word Gets Around’, but it was their second album ‘Performance and Cocktails’ in 1999 that catapulted them into the limelight with hit singles ‘The Bartender and the Thief’, ‘Pick a Part That’s New’ and ‘Just Looking’.
‘Scream Above The Sounds’ is slated for release on November 3.

John Talabot delivers brilliant set at Belgium’s Paradise City Festival

OHMYGOSSIP — John Talabot delivered a rapturous set at Belgium’s Paradise City Festival.
The ‘So Will Be Now’ hitmaker – who is also label mates with The xx, FKA Twigs, Sampha and Jamie xx on Young Turks records – headlined the third night of the electronic music extravaganza set in Ribaucourt Castle and had the crowd cheering and whistling for more as he ploughed through his fan favourite mixes like the Massimiliano Pagliara remix of Hilbert Space and deep grooves like Post Present by Florian Kupfer.
Other acts to impress over the course of the weekend were Detroit house music legend Omar S, Âme DJ, Joachim Pastor & N’to, and Recondite live.
Paradise scooped the OVAM green event award for achieving ‘100 per cent recycled’ status last year.
Paradise City Festival organisers said: “If we all work together to reduce our combined ecological footprint, there will be no reason for pessimism. That’s the philosophy behind our ‘green’ Paradise City. This belief in the future is reflected in the festival’s line-up, combining established names with up-and-coming young talent.”
John Talabot recently joined The xx on their ‘Night and Day’ UK tour, and the the festival wanted to bring DJs in who cater for “broader audience” in the house music genre this year.
The organisers added: “The festival wants to cater to electronic music connoisseurs’ every need, with a broad range of warm house, melodic techno, invigorating disco and deep electro. Paradise City brings a hefty chunk of underground music, but also wants to open it up to a broader audience.”
Other treats included a unique Butler service, 100 per cent solar panel energy, free cardboard tents and panoramic views of the stunning countryside just outside of Brussells.

Mumford and Sons heading in new direction?

OHMYGOSSIP — Mumford & Sons’ new album could seem them head in a different direction.
Frontman Marcus Mumford has revealed he has an idea in mind for the sound of the folk-rock band’s follow-up to 2015’s ‘Wilder Mind’, but he’s yet to discuss it with his bandmates, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall and Ted Dwane.
Speaking at the launch of the shortlist for the 2017 Hyundai Mercury Prize at the Langham Hotel in London on Thursday morning (27.07.17), Marcus said: “We are in and out of the studio collaborating with people. We are just enjoying it.
“We don’t need a quick record, we just need a good record.
“We’ve got some good songs.”
Asked about the direction, he added “I have a good idea, but I need to discuss it with the other lads first.”
Marcus recently said they’re in a similar frame of mind to that which inspired their debut release, ‘Sigh No More’, back in 2009.
He shared: “We’ve been playing a couple of new songs a night on this tour, and we’ve gone back to the mentality we had when we first started out, when every song was new to the audience and we’d get away with experimenting on them almost every night – working out what wasn’t quite right, which lyrics didn’t work, how 60 people in a pub reacted to certain things.
“That was always part of our writing process, but on ‘Wilder Mind’ we kind of changed that mentality – we wrote it less on the road and more in the studio.
“People can share songs online so much more easily these days, so that experimentation is a little riskier than before, but we try not to be too precious about it.”

Ed Sheeran shortlisted for Mercury Prize

OHMYGOSSIP — Ed Sheeran has been nominated for the 2017 Hyundai Mercury Prize Album of the Year Award.
The ‘Shape Of You’ hitmaker stormed the charts earlier this year when he dropped his third studio album ‘÷’ – featuring his hits ‘Castle on the Hill’, ‘What Do I Know’ and ‘Nancy Mulligan’ – following a year away from the limelight, so it’s hardly surprising that he’s managed to wiggle his way on to the shortlist and be in with the chance of nabbing the gong for this year’s prestigious event.
But the flame-haired hunk will have to beat off stiff competition from other musicians as he will go up against grime artist Stormzy for his debut LP ‘Gang Signs & Prayer’, songwriter Sampha – whose full name is Sampha Sisay – for his debut album ‘Process’ and The XX’s ‘I See You’.
The Big Moon will also go head-to-head with Ed for the prize thanks to their album ‘Love in the 4th Dimension’, while Loyle Carner – whose full name is Benjamin Gerard Coyle-Larner – also managed to secure a spot on the shortlist with his debut studio album ‘Yesterday’s Gone’.
alt-j are no doubt thrilled their LP ‘Relaxed’ will go up against some major acts, while Blossoms’ self-titled album, Dinosaur’s ‘Together, As One’, Glass Animals’ ‘How To Be A Human Being’, Kate Tempest’s ‘Let Them Eat Chaos’ and J Hus’ ‘Common Sense’ have also made it on the shortlist.
The Mercury judging panel is made up of 12 industry figures, including musicians Marcus Mumford, Jessie Ware, Lianne La Havas and Jamie Cullum.
The judges said: “This year’s Hyundai Mercury Prize shortlist celebrates the remarkable power of British music. What these artists have in common is an infectious pleasure in music making and an arresting sense of urgency about the music they make. They delight in exploring musical possibilities and refusing to be pinned down by genre conventions.”
The awards show will take place on September 14 at the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith, in London and will be broadcast on BBC Four and BBC Radio 6 Music.
The event will feature live performances from many of the shortlisted artists and the evening will culminate in the announcement of the overall winner of the 2017 Hyundai Mercury Prize. The winner will receive the prize money of £25,000.
Tickets for the 2017 Hyundai Mercury Prize Awards Show are on sale now from Eventimapollo.com.

Ella Eyre wants Nicki Minaj to ‘growl’ on her track

OHMYGOSSIP — Ella Eyre wants Nicki Minaj to “growl” on their song.
The 23-year-old singer says she’s keen to collaborate with the ‘No Frauds’ hitmaker and thinks the American rapper – who has slapped her vocals on pop tracks for the likes of Justin Bieber, Jessie J, M.I.A, Madonna, Ariana Grande and David Guetta in the past – could add a feisty vocal with her signature rap sound.
Asked who she’d love to work with, she said: “If I could collaborate with any artist it would be Nicki Minaj. I’d love her to growl on my record!”
Ella was speaking at a special workshop to mentor aspiring musicians hosted by Nando’s Music Exchange in London’s Roundhouse and also spoke about the issues that face the next generation of recording artists.
She said: “You have to adapt. YouTube, Spotify, whatever. As difficult as it might be earning less, the music industry is still trying to figure out how to make it work for everybody. Rather than complaining, say this is what’s going on, how can we get people to listen. Adapt to survive!”
She was joined by South African rapper Dope Saint Jude and said she loves working with other artists who inspire her sound.
Speaking about the project, she said: “Collaborating with different artists has been an important part of my music career so far, so I’m really excited to be working on the Nando’s Music Exchange programme this year.
“The Roundhouse is one of my favourite venues in the world so it’s even more special to be here supporting incredibly talented young people.”
This is the third time Nando’s have staged their Music Exchange, and in previous years, Stormzy and Little Simz have made surprise appearances at the event.
To apply to be a part of this year’s Nando’s Music Exchange, head to www.roundhouse.org.uk/young-creatives/summer-2/nandos-music-exchange/nandos-music-exchange-2017-application-form and apply by Wednesday (12.07.17).

Ronnie James Dio to return for hologram tour

OHMYGOSSIP — Ronnie James Dio is to tour in November – as a hologram.
The late singer – who died in 2010 aged 67 – closed the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany alongside his group Dio Disciples in August last year, and now he will return to the stage for the ‘Dio Returns’ series, which will begin in Helsinki, Finland on November 30 and concluding on December 21 in Tilburg, Netherlands.
Even before he passed away, Ronnie was very much interested in stage production and had even performed inside a giant Crystal Ball, which he designed.
Ronnie’s widow Wendy – who served as his manager for several years – says Ronnie, who performed with Black Sabbath and was known for his hits ‘Holy Diver’, ‘Rainbow in the Dark’ and ‘We Rock’, would more than give his “blessing” to the hologram.
She told Rolling Stone magazine: “In 1986, for the ‘Sacred Heart Tour,’ Ronnie and I created the Crystal Ball with Ronnie filmed and speaking in a suspended crystal ball effect, done with back projection, which was the closest we could get to a hologram.
“Ronnie was always wanting to experiment with new stage ideas and was a big Disney fan. With this said, I am sure he is giving us his blessing with this hologram project.
“It gives the fans that saw Ronnie perform an opportunity to see him again and new fans that never got to see him a chance to see him for the first time. We hope everyone will enjoy the show that we have all worked so hard to put together.”
Dio Returns Tour Dates:
November 30 – Helsinki, Finland @ The Circus
December 3 – Stockholm, Sweden @ Fryshuset
December 4 – Oslo, Norway @ Rockefeller Music Hall
December 6 – Warsaw, Poland @ Progresja
December 13 – Barcelona, Spain @ Bikini
December 15 – Santander, Spain @ Escenario Santander
December 17 – Bucharest, Romania @ Arelene Romane
December 20 – Antwerp, Belgium @ Trix

Charli XCX: Albums aren’t the be-all and end-all of music anymore

OHMYGOSSIP — Charli XCX doesn’t think albums are the “be-all and end-all of music” anymore.
The ‘Boys’ hitmaker says LPs used to be a “culmination” of an artists’ work, where they would be judged on what kind of an artist they are, but because of the rise of streaming, this has changed greatly.
She said: “I didn’t really make a decision to shelve it [the album], it’s more that it’s just not the time for me to put an album out yet. It’s fine. I just spent a week in the countryside writing, doing my thing. I think we’re at a point where albums aren’t the be-all and end-all of music.
“I think before, the album was the culmination of your work and the way that you judged someone on what kind of an artist they are. I think now just because with streaming and the nature that people digest music, it’s not really like that anymore. Of course an album is important, but there are so many other aspects to an artist that can define who they are.”
Charli also writes a number of songs for other artists and approaches it in the exact same way she would do with a song for herself.
She added: “I always write the song that I want to write, and sometimes that ends up with me and other times it ends up with someone else. It’s not a different process. I feel like I just write how I write. I think people like my style of writing, so I just try and do me, you know?”
And the 24-year-old singer feels “lucky” to be making music.
She told Music Junkee: “I feel really happy at the moment, and I’m just lucky to be making music and to be writing and performing. Of course, there are bad sides to the industry, but there are bad sides to every aspect of life. I think the more you dwell on the negatives then the more unhappy that you get. I’m really just in a place where I’m just trying to do things I love and work with people I care about, you know?”

Quincy Jones awarded 9.42m in Michael Jackson estate dispute

OHMYGOSSIP — Quincy Jones has been awarded $9.42 million following a royalties dispute with Michael Jackson’s estate.
The 84-year-old producer filed a lawsuit in 2013, alleging he was owed up to $30 million for his work on a number of projects which were released after Michael died in 2009, including the ‘This Is It’ concert film and two Cirque du Soleil productions.
Speaking after a jury awarded him the sum of $9.42 million, Quincy said in a statement: “As an artist, maintaining the vision and integrity of one’s creation is of paramount importance. I, along with the team I assembled with Michael, took great care and purpose in creating these albums, and it has always given me a great sense of pride and comfort that three decades after they were originally recorded, these songs are still being played in every corner of the world.
“This lawsuit was never about Michael, it was about protecting the integrity of the work we all did in the recording studio and the legacy of what we created. Although this judgement is not the full amount that I was seeking, I am very grateful that the jury decided in our favour in this matter. I view it not only as a victory for myself personally, but for artists’ rights overall.”
His attorney Mike McCool added: “The jury found that Mr. Jones was right in his allegations of underpayment on virtually all items. We were pleased about that. There’s good and bad, but overall we are pleased.”
However, Howard Weitzman and Zia Moudaber, lawyers for the estate, hit out at the judgement.
They told Billboard in a statement: “While the jury denied Quincy Jones $21 million – or more than two-thirds of what he demanded – from The Estate of Michael Jackson, we still believe that giving him millions of dollars that he has no right to receive under his contracts is wrong.
“This would reinterpret the legal language in, and effectively rewrite, contracts that Mr. Jones lived under for more than three decades, admitted he never read, referred to as ‘contract, montract,’ and told the jurors he didn’t ‘give a damn’ about. Any amount above and beyond what is called for in his contracts is too much and unfair to Michael’s heirs. Although Mr. Jones is portraying this is a victory for artists’ rights, the real artist is Michael Jackson and it is his money Mr. Jones is seeking.”

Lana Del Rey: Stevie Nicks duet was career-defining moment

OHMYGOSSIP — Lana Del Rey says her duet with Stevie Nicks on her LP ‘Lust for Life’ was a “career-defining moment”.
The 32-year-old pop star was lucky enough to have the Fleetwood Mac legend duet with her on ‘Beautiful People, Beautiful Problems’ and it’s a moment she will never forget.
Lana had a meltdown when the 69-year-old musician arrived to the studio to record her parts as the ‘Everywhere’ hitmaker asked her to sing straight away.
The ‘Video Games’ singer was worried that Stevie would overpower her delicate voice, but she reassured Lana and said she could be her “little echo”
Recalling their session, Lana told Nick Grimshaw on his BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show: “I was definitely nervous.
“She got off the plane at 10.30, so she didn’t get to the studio until midnight – and she just breezed in, black on black, gold everywhere. She was kind of a vision.
“When she started singing, she told me she wanted to hear me sing something, too. And then I really freaked out!
“I said to her over the mic, ‘I just sound so quiet compared to you.’ And she was like, ‘That’s OK, you can be my little echo!’
“I thought that was so cool. I’m not as loud as her. My voice isn’t as low as hers. But she loves it for what it is.
“That, as it was happening, was a career-defining moment for me.”
Speaking about teaming up with Stevie and how into the song she was, Lana previously said: “She was amazing. She’s just everything you hope she’s gonna be. She’s so contemporary, and she knows all the new music that’s out weekly. She loved the track and she added so much to it.”
Meanwhile, after a sold-out performance at London’s O2 Academy Brixton on Monday night (24.07.17), Lana is set to perform in Liverpool and Glasgow on August 22 and 23 respectively.

Lana Del Rey explains live mishap at Brixton show

OHMYGOSSIP — Lana Del Rey stopped her band performing ‘Love’ on stage in London on Monday night (24.07.17) because she didn’t recognise the music.
The track is central to the 32-year-old singer’s latest record ‘Lust for Life’, but Lana has confessed she chose to perform the rest of the track A Capella after a mix up on stage at O2 Academy Brixton.
The ‘Video Games’ hitmaker is still not 100 per cent sure what went wrong, and has apologised if she came across as “abrasive” to her bandmates, but she just wanted to do the song justice.
She said: “I’m not exactly sure what happened, but I think my keyboard player was playing the wrong chords.
“I was leaning in to him and saying, ‘That’s not it, that’s not it’ and he was like, ‘That is it, trust me’. I listened for 10 seconds and I was like, ‘Damn, I definitely can’t get it’. I couldn’t get it in rehearsal, either. So I just told him to stop. I feel bad – I was kind of abrasive.”
Lana says she is thankful to her fans for knowing the words to the song as they helped her sing along.
She told the BBC: “But that song is at the heart of the record and I thought it’d be weird if I didn’t do it. So, luckily the people who were at the show knew the words and they sang along with me.”
The brunette beauty performed to a star-studded crowd with FKA Twigs, Florence Welch and Marina and the Diamonds among the audience members at the sold-out concert.

Celine Dion’s O2 award

OHMYGOSSIP — Céline Dion has been presented with an award by The O2 for performing at their 10th Birthday Shows in June.
The ‘My Heart Will Go On’ hitmaker played the iconic London venue, which seats 20,000 people, on June 20 and 21 as part of her ‘Céline Dion Live Tour’ and will return for two more gigs on July 29 and 30.
Céline said: “The first two O2 London shows were fantastic, and the audiences were so welcoming and supportive. It was an honour to be part of the birthday celebration and I look forward to being back there this weekend.”
The O2 marked its 10th birthday last month with a series of concerts from the likes of alt-J, Ed Sheeran and Foo Fighters.
There was also a balloon suspended from the roof of the arena to celebrate the birthday milestone.
The 49-year-old pop superstar is not the first act to receive an accolade from the venue.
Take That picked up a prize for breaking the record of performing the most shows and selling the most tickets at The O2.
The group – Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald – have completed 25 headline shows, two performances at the BRIT Awards in 2011 and 2015, a set at Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball in 2014 and O2’s Wear The Rose in 2015 at the London arena since it opened its doors 10 years ago and have sold over 385,000 tickets, more than any other artist.
The ‘Back For Good’ hitmakers received a glass sculpture of the venue at the end of their final night of six consecutive shows at The O2 on June 10.

Liam Gallagher turned down Foo Fighters Glastonbury gig

OHMYGOSSIP — Liam Gallagher turned down the chance to perform with Foo Fighters at Glastonbury.
The ‘Wall of Glass’ singer has revealed he was invited by the American rock band’s frontman Dave Grohl to join them on the Pyramid Stage when they headlined the music extravaganza at Worthy Farm in Somerset, South West England last month, but Liam declined because of the lack of time for rehearsals.
He said: “He asked me to come on and do a song. I said no, cos I need a bit of rehearsal. I know it’s cool and all that, but I need a rehearsal.”
However, the 44-year-old rocker says he would’ve loved to have done a duet with the ‘Run’ group’s drummer Taylor Hawkins on his solo single ‘Range Rover Bitch’.
Speaking to Zane Lowe on his Apple Beats 1 Radio show, Liam said: “I tell you what I wanna do. I wanna do ‘Range Rover Bitch’ that Taylor [Hawkins, drummer] made. That’s the tune.”
The former Oasis frontman is set to perform at Foo Fighters’ CalJam festival in San Bernadino, California on October 7, giving him plenty of time to prepare his vocals for a performance with Dave Grohl and Co.
Meanwhile, the ‘Songbird’ hitmaker – who is gearing up to release his debut solo LP ‘As You Were’ – has been performing shows all summer doing his own renditions of his former band Oasis’ huge hits such as ‘Live Forever’, ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Star’ and ‘Morning Glory’, but has accused his brother and bitter rival Noel, 50, of performing their songs like country legend Dolly Parton.
He said: “If you want to come and hear Oasis music done properly, come to my gig. Our kid (Noel) is doing them like Dolly Parton.”
The pair have been at loggerheads for years, especially after the band came to an abrupt end in August 2009 following a backstage fight between them before a Paris festival performance.
Liam regularly mocks Noel on Twitter, frequently comparing pictures of him to a “potato”.

Liam Gallagher has ‘loads of charm’

OHMYGOSSIP — Liam Gallagher sees himself as a “rock n roll singer with a dash of punk and loads of charm”.
The 44-year-old rocker has revealed he primarily considers himself to be a singer, rather than a songwriter, and has admitted he’s “still learning”.
Liam shared: “I don’t see myself as a writer, I see myself as a singer first.
“I’m still learning, when I wake up in the morning and look in the mirror I just see a rock n roll singer with a dash of punk, and loads of charm. I don’t see myself as an Ed Sheeran or a Bod Dylan.”
Liam is poised to release his long-awaited solo album ‘As You Were’ in October, but the Manchester-born star has admitted he cherished his break from the music industry.
The outspoken rocker – who divorced his second wife Nicole Appleton in 2014, after having a child with journalist Liza Ghorbani the year before – said he needed to step back from the business.
He told Beats 1: “I needed time out. I had to get away from music. The last four years have been hell. I had to go cold turkey and get away in a room away from music.
“The only time I’ve really had off is the past four years. It’s been good to have a bit of time off, get back for reality, go for walks and do stuff. You can’t be on stage all the time.
“I got my relationships back with my kids, all is good in the world. I’m bored of that now, I’m ready to get back on stage and do some screaming and shouting.”

Dua Lipa is taking charge with her new song

OHMYGOSSIP — Dua Lipa is “taking charge” with her new song.
The 21-year-old singer recently released ‘New Rules’, a track which she revealed is “quite different” to a lot of the others on her LP and is the break up song she wish she had when she had to go through the end of a relationship.
She told Billboard: “‘New Rules’ is quite different to a lot of tracks on the album. I wanted it to feel very new.
“It’s the breakup song that I wish I had when I was breaking up with someone … This is me taking charge … I wanted to show women looking after each other and that we have each other’s backs.”
Meanwhile, Dua recently revealed she wanted to open up about “a lot of personal things” on her new album.
She said: “You know, I want to get a lot of personal things out there and I want the fans to really get to know me but I feel like a lot of what I do is being able to dance to sad songs … It’s also a lot of fun to be able to find a cool mix between a ballad, which breaks into, I don’t know, something a bit more dancey.”
And the brunette beauty revealed she is “obsessed” with hip hop stars Kendrick Lamar and J Cole.
Asked who inspires her, she added: “I guess just the different types of music I’ve been brought up on. My parents listened to a lot of Oasis, Radiohead, Sting and The Police and I listened to Nelly Furtado and Pink and Christina Aguilera. When I moved to Kosovo I listened to hip hop. Now I’m obsessed with Kendrick Lamar and J Cole. There are so many amazing artists, I think it’s just my love for so many different artists and genres that it all really inspires me. When it came to writing my own stuff it was like, how to get all of those things into something I identify with.”
