Stormzy makes film about his ‘inner battle’ as a kid

OHMYGOSSIP — Stormzy says grime artists are “masters of their own destiny”.
The ‘Big For Your Boots’ rapper has created a new short film to accompany his critically-acclaimed LP ‘Gangs, Signs and Prayers’ in which he documents what it is like for young black kids growing up in less affluent areas of London, and the “inner battle” many of them face.
Speaking about the documentary – which is directed by Rollo Jackson – Stormzy said: “The hardest choice in life, but probably the most important choice is actually, like, the road you decide to walk down.
“Young youts like myself, that grow up in the hood, we often don’t know that we are actually the masters of our own destiny.
“There are so many things that steer us in the wrong direction however, we decide what happens in our own lives and like my album, I endeavoured for this film to portray just that. Derived from my album ‘Gang Signs & Prayer’, and written and directed by the legend that is Rollo, I’ll let the visual do the talking.”
The film tells the tale of a youngster called Thomas living in the south of the capital who has been brought up by a single parent, just like Stormzy.
14-year-old actor Abdul Basit Ayanwusi plays the boy and has previously danced for Justin Bieber among others.
Asked how he got on board, director Rollo told the BBC “Abdul came in via street casting. He’s actually an amazing dancer [he’s appeared with Justin Bieber and Lady Leshurr] and hadn’t done much acting before but he instantly stood out. He has an intelligence and focus though that set him apart from a lot of kids – as well as a ridiculous amount of energy.
He was composed, inquisitive and just dealt really well with the long days and endless takes that are part of being on set.”
‘Gang Signs & Prayer’ is available globally on YouTube. Additional information about the rise of grime on YouTube is available on the YouTube for Artists blog.

Thom Yorke’s sleepy Blue Planet II song

OHMYGOSSIP — Thom Yorke’s idea to do the song for ‘Blue Planet II’ came whilst he was “half asleep” watching the show.
Radiohead have teamed up with legendary TV and movie composer Hans Zimmer to record a reworked version of the band’s song ‘Bloom’ to soundtrack the BBC documentary.
The 48-year-old frontman has revealed it was both his curiosity about creatures in the deep sea that are lesser known and his son’s desire to help the charity Greenpeace that led to the ‘Creep’ rockers getting involved.
Speaking to Matt Everitt on BBC 6 Music, Thom said: “This was me lying on the sofa trying to go back to sleep when I’ve been up too late with my son – 7am when he was small – and it coming in and out of my subconscious.
“And staying there, and you know especially stuff about the deep and these life forms they’d discovered on that series, that seemed to be the implication, that they managed to go so deep that they’d discovered all these creatures that existed that we didn’t know about.
“That whole thing for me, the idea of discovering life that humanity doesn’t know about, is to me one of the most profound kind of things, profound concepts.
“Even if it’s discovering fossils, or the idea that creatures exist – that there’s a history to the place we live that we don’t know anything about – to me is the most profound, spiritual expression of humanity when we discover it.
“‘The Blue Planet’ – the original series – was probably the thing, first it turned on my son to the whole thing, and he became obsessed, as you do when you’re growing up at that age, five or six, you get all the books and you recite the statistics, all the Latin names, which is what you used to do.
“And then a letter from Greenpeace came through about something or other to the house, and he started reading it and said ‘Dad, can we get involved in this’?
‘Yeah, sure if you want to.”
“So then we established links with Greenpeace.
“Anyway, I got involved in all this stuff over the years, and it started with being half asleep on the sofa watching Blue Planet!”
‘Blue Planet II’ will air later this year on BBC One in the UK.

Demi Lovato calls out bad dates on new album

OHMYGOSSIP — Demi Lovato wrote about bad dates on her new album.
The ‘Confident’ singer has revealed her dating life was the main topic for her sixth LP ‘Tell Me You Love Me’ and while she penned songs about her worst experiences, the brunette beauty also talks about the potential suitors she was “infatuated” with.
Speaking at the London launch of her the forthcoming record – which is released on Friday (29.09.17) – at The Cuckoo Club on Tuesday night (26.09.17), she said: “Basically I went into the studio and I had things that I wanted to write about, like experiences like I’d go on a bad date or I’d go out with somebody and be super infatuated and want to write a song about it.
“Sometimes going through a break-up you want to write about that too.”
The 25-year-old pop star – who split from MMA fighter Guilherme ‘Bomba’ Vasconcelos in May – also revealed that she would love to work with Ariana Grande and she is still hoping for a collaboration with rap superstar Eminem.
She said: “I’d love to work with Eminem. I’d also really love to work with Kelly Clarkson and Ariana (Grande) I’d love to work with.”
Demi previously confessed she is “nervous” about the world hearing one of the tracks written about a certain someone who she’s not naming.
She said recently: “Sometimes you put music that you just feel like everyone is going to know who it’s about.
“Headlines are going to come out of it, and it’s like, when you write a song, you’re just being vulnerable, and you’re just writing about something that’s inspiring you, so all the baggage that comes with it is what I’m kind of nervous about.”
The ‘Sorry Not Sorry’ singer is not giving away any clues as to who inspired the track and may never tell, but she won’t let “theories” about the song get to her.
She said: “I think that everything happens for a reason, and certain emotions are felt at certain points in your life, and you don’t always have to explain them to people.
“So whatever you want to think about it – you go into whatever theories you have – fine.
“But I know what it’s about and who it’s about and I’m just going to let it be.”

Arctic Monkeys working on 6th album

OHMYGOSSIP — Arctic Monkeys will start recording their next album shortly ahead of a 2018 release.
The British rockers will hit the studio soon to get to work on their sixth album, a follow up to 2013’s ‘AM’, and bass player Nick O’Malley has admitted the British rockers will have “problems” if the record isn’t released next year.
A piece on motorcycle website For the Ride revealed: “Nick found time for the track day before recording began on the eagerly anticipated sixth album, started at a secret location in September.
“The new album will be out next year because ‘if it isn’t, we’ve got problems’.”
Nick’s comments come after frontman Alex Turner insisted the group – also made up of Matt Helders and Jamie Cook – were in “no rush” to record their sixth studio album.
When asked in June 2016 about plans for a new LP, he said: “No, there aren’t really, Not yet. But there will be at some point. I mean, we’ll see with that. No rush.”
During the Arctic Monkeys’ hiatus, Alex has been working on his side project, The Last Shadow Puppets, with Miles Kane.
What’s more, drummer Matt recorded the album ‘Post Pop Depression’ with Iggy Pop and Josh Homme.
The LP was released in March 2016 and they followed it up by playing concerts in support of the record.
As well as Iggy, Josh and Matt, ‘Post Pop Depression’ also features Dean Fertita, from Queens of the Stone Age, and the Dead Weather, on guitars and keyboards.
Artic Monkeys released their debut album ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not’ in 2006 and followed that up with ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’ a year later and then had two-year breaks before ‘Humbug’ in 2009, ‘Suck It and See’ in 2011, and ‘AM’ in 2013.

Azealia Banks: Cardi B is a ‘poor man’s Nicki Minaj’

OHMYGOSSIP — Azealia Banks thinks Cardi B is a “poor man’s Nicki Minaj”.
The outspoken musician has slammed the hip-hop star after she recently sealed her first-ever US number one with her track ‘Bodak Yellow’, which displaced Taylor Swift at the top of the charts.
Responding to Cardi’s success, Azealia wrote in a series of now-deleted tweets: “I’m sorry. Black industry men are too hype for this Latina girl I’ve never seen them jump like this for Remy [Ma] or Nicki [Minaj].
“Spinning this ‘for the culture’ story when they are simply letting white men at Atlantic buy them into hating their own women. (sic)”
Azealia, 26, subsequently wrote that Cardi – who is of Trinidadian and Dominican descent – was “only black when black want to include themselves in a success story”.
The controversial star later added: “I wanted spicy Latina and she gave me poor mans Nicki. (sic)”
By contrast, Azealia recently admitted she feels “incredibly flattered” to have duetted with Iggy Azalea after years of feuding.
The ‘212’ rapper responded to fans after the ‘Fancy’ hitmaker revealed the pair were collaborating on a track.
Azealia wrote on Instagram: “Please let me clear up any misconception for anyone that took my words out of context: I am incredibly flattered and so excited about a future collaboration with Iggy.
“Yes, she and I had our differences in the past, but we were so young and that was so long ago. She and I are both on a whole other level right now, and I have nothing but respect for her as a woman, an artist and a businesswoman. As such, I’m thrilled for the opportunity to work with her, or any other artist out there because I truly believe that united, we are stronger.

The ‘Slow Hands’ hitmaker was forced to make the “difficult” decision to call off the show at El Plaza Condesa after the country was hit by a catastrophic earthquake last week.
The Irish hunk says that ultimately his fans’ safety was his biggest concern with regards to going ahead with the show or not.

In a note posted on his social media accounts, he wrote: “Unfortunately, due to the recent tragic events in Mexico City, I have had to cancel my upcoming show.

Noel Gallagher selling old Oasis equipment

OHMYGOSSIP — Noel Gallagher is auctioning off his old Oasis equipment.
The 50-year-old guitarist is selling over 50 items, which have gathered dust in his house, on music site Reverb where fans will be able to make bids from October 2.
The ‘Supersonic’ songwriter hopes his old amps and various other pieces will be of good use to whoever buys them.
On getting rid of his stuff, Noel said: “When you’ve been playing as long as I have, you tend to amass a huge amount of gear, and it’s not doing me or anyone else any good if it’s just sitting around.
“These pieces have a lot history, but they’re still very playable – I’d love to get them into the hands of someone who will put them to good use.”
An item tipped to fetch the most is the Orange Custom Shop NG140, which was built specially for the ‘Some Might Say’ band’s former guitar player.
It also comes with a setlist from “the Oasis rehearsal held just prior to the band’s last unofficial gig”.
Meanwhile, fans of the legendary Britpop group can also pay to stay in the Cornish recording studio where they made their seminal LP ‘Definitely Maybe’ in 1994.
According to The Sawmills Studio’s manager Ruth Taylor, Noel and his bitter rival and bandmate Liam Gallagher, 45 – who have barley spoken since Noel quit the group after an on-stage bust-up at their gig in Paris in 2009 – did their own laundry when they stayed.
She told the Daily Star newspaper of the pair: “They were very funny and down to earth – they even did their own washing!”
Noel’s sale comes after he announced his third High Flying Birds LP ‘Who Built The Moon?’.
The record will drop on November 24, and he will then head out on a world tour in 2018 which will kick off in Brighton on April 22.
Noel teamed up with David Holmes – who has remixed tracks for the likes of U2, Primal Scream and Ice Cube in the past and is renowned for his movie soundtrack work on films such as ‘Ocean’s Eleven and ‘Logan Lucky’ – for the follow-up to 2015’s ‘Chasing Yesterday’.
For the first time in his career, he wrote every song in the studio and was encouraged by David, 48, to vary his influences to include French psychedelic pop, classic electro, soul, rock, disco and dance.
Paul Weller plays the organ on the song ‘Holy Mountain and Johnny Marr has recorded guitars and harmonicas on ‘If Love Is The Law’ on the LP.

Robbie Williams was touring with slipped disc

OHMYGOSSIP — Robbie Williams was forced to cancel the rest of his European tour after slipping a disc.
The 43-year-old singer was due to perform two dates in Russia as part of his ‘The Heavy Entertainment Show Tour’, and play a New Wave event in Sochi earlier this month, but has now revealed the “mystery illness” behind calling off the shows was in fact his bad back, which he has long suffered with.
The ‘I Love My Life’ hitmaker – who regularly opens up about his crippling battle with anxiety and mental illness – says it’s important for him to be both “mentally and psychically fit” to do such big shows, and so he felt it was best to get himself back to full health before returning to the stage in February next year.
Robbie told the Daily Star newspaper: “The most difficult thing about creating the tour was my health and my back, I’ve got a slipped disc and it was kind of stressful.
“You have to be physically fit and mentally fit.
“I have to be as mentally fit as I can be to take on such a massive undertaking; there’s one million plus people that are coming to see me and you can’t do that with a bad back, but I have.”
The dark-haired hunk is due to resume his tour in Australia in 2018.
A spokesperson for the star said previously: “Robbie Williams has played to over 1.1 million fans this summer and recently announced an Australian leg of the tour which is happening in February and March 2018.”
The tour cancellation came after the ‘Rock DJ’ singer admitted that being a pop star is “bad” for his health, and that he thinks he wouldn’t suffer from depression if he wasn’t famous.
He said recently: “This job is really bad for my health. It’s going to kill me. Unless I view it in a different way.
“[Depression] sprints through my family. I don’t know if I’d be this mentally ill without fame.
“I don’t think it would be as gross or as powerful if it hadn’t have been for fame.
“You get a magnifying glass in the shape of the world’s attention and your defects will obviously magnify too.”

Eminem producers to sell shares in rapper’s music

OHMYGOSSIP — Eminem’s former producers are selling 15 per cent shares in the rapper’s back catalogue.
The Bass Brothers – Mark and Jeff Bass – who were the first to sign the rap megastar are offering fans the chance to own a share in the royalties to the songs the ‘My Name Is’ hitmaker released from 1999 to 2013, with a minimum price of $2,250.
The pair have launched a new company called Royalty Flow, which will see them auction off the royalties in October.
Matthew Smith, the head of Royalty Exchange, who are running the sale, told Rolling Stone magazine: “If you own any Apple stocks, for instance, it’s exactly the same.
“Not only do you potentially get to earn along with Eminem’s catalogue, but you also win the ultimate bragging rights to say ‘hey, I own that!’ anytime you hear one of his songs.”
A representative for Eminem – whose real name is Marshall Mathers – has said the ‘Lose Yourself’ star is in no way involved in the deal.
The spokesperson told the publication: “Eminem is not involved in any deals for the sale of recording royalties and has no connection to this company.”
On Monday (02.10.17), Royalty Flow will submit legal documents and in three weeks time the US Securities and Exchange Commission will make a decision as to whether to approve the company’s plan.
Those thinking of investing would be able to bid on 150 shares or more.
If approved, buyers will be able to buy and sell their shares via a system similar to the stock exchange.
Bass Brothers’ manager Joe Martin says the pair – who are credited as FBT Productions on Eminem’s albums, including 1999’s ‘The Slim Shady LP’ and 2000’s ‘The Marshall Mathers LP’ – are hoping that investors will be able to buy parts of other artists’ royalties as well in the future.
He said: “You’re going to find a class of artists that will certainly be looking into this.
“[They’ll] find out the real value of their income streams, as opposed to going to [major labels] Sony or EMI and taking a deal that looks good but may not be the best deal.”

Lorde’s Sober was inspired by ‘wild and fluorescent’ summer

OHMYGOSSIP — Lorde’s track ‘Sober’ was conceived after a “wild and fluorescent” summer in New Zealand.
The 20-year-old star, who was born in Auckland, has opened up about the creative process behind the intriguing song on her new album ‘Melodrama’, saying she wrote it “that first summer on the cusp of being an adult”.
Lorde, who explained that the record was created during a period of intense partying following her break-up, told the Song Exploder Podcast: “When you come out of a relationship, you just want to fill the quiet as best you can.”
The chart-topping singer’s track – which saw her collaborate with Jack Antonoff and Frank Ocean – centres on the struggles of confessing her feelings to someone.
Meanwhile, the ‘Royals’ hitmaker previously revealed her entire world was “up in the air” and became “really crazy” last year following her painful split from her boyfriend, James Lowe.
The musician felt she was “totally having [her] mind blown” by their break-up, but she successfully managed to channel her emotions into her music.
Speaking about her creative process, she said: “I basically turned 19 and the world was like: ‘Alright, we’re going to toss everything up in the air and it’s all going to come down in a really crazy way’.
“All of a sudden I moved out of home, I went through a break-up. It felt like every day and every night I was totally having my mind blown by all these new things. I just couldn’t write it all down fast enough.”
