OHMYGOSSIP — Jamie Cullum thinks the COVID-19 lockdown was “good” for his creativity.
The 42-year-old jazz singer – who shot to fame when his third album ‘Twentysomething’ stormed the charts back in 2003 before going on to release a string of further records and has since married author Sophie Dahl – admitted that he was able to pen his latest album and explore photography during the lockdowns.
He said: “I think there was something about the predictability of it that was quite good for my own personal creativity. And I did write my Christmas album during that time. I do a lot of drawing too and I love taking photographs and listening to music – and obviously I do my radio show [on BBC Radio 2] as well. Sophie always creatively present. She’s obviously an incredible writer and has amazing taste and when you’re with someone and they’re creative too, it’s a thing you do together.
The ‘All At Sea’ hitmaker went on to express his shock at the time that has passed since he released his first album and joked that he looks back on his old music with a “sense of horror” but has also learned to be “kinder” to his younger self as time goes on.
He told Metro newspaper’s Sixty Seconds column: “It’s actually more like 23 years since my first album, which is amazing to me. Like a lot of people, I did a big sort out during lockdown and I found old flyers for gigs I put on myself and the old ‘I could have been too busy pinching myself then’, but a few years on, you realise your worth. Payslips from when I was making my records. Sometimes I look back on things with a sense of horror – not because I don’t like it, but because I always want to be moving forward. If you hear your voice, the way you play the piano or a certain lyric and you think, ‘I wouldn’t do that now’. But as you get older, you’re kinder to that child you see on the front cover of a record.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Snoop Dogg has removed the Death Row catalogue from streaming platforms because they “don’t pay”.
The 50-year-old hip hop legend bought Death Row Records – which was founded by Suge Knight, Dr. Dre and Michael ‘Harry O’ Harris in 1991 – earlier this year, and he’s explained his decision to pull its collection from various services.
He told DJ EFN and N.O.R.E.’s ‘Drink Champs’ podcast: “First thing I did was snatch all the music off those platforms traditionally known to people, because those platforms don’t pay.
“And those platforms get millions of millions of streams, and nobody gets paid other than the record labels.”
Now, Snoop – who helped secure the label’s legendary status alongside the likes of Dre and 2Pac – is looking at other options for its future.
He added: “So what I wanted to do is snatch my music off, create a platform similar to Amazon, Netflix, Hulu.
“It’ll be a Death Row app, and the music, in the meantime, will live in the metaverse.”
Snoop shot to fame after appearing on Dr. Dre’s acclaimed 1992 ‘The Chronic’, released on the legendary record label, and was signed himself and went on to put out his debut album, ‘Doggystyle’, a year later.
The rapper – whose real name is Calvin Broadus Jr – acquired the company from MNRK Music Group for an undisclosed sum.
The 50-year-old megastar said: “I am thrilled and appreciative of the opportunity to acquire the iconic and culturally significant Death Row Records brand, which has immense untapped future value.
“It feels good to have ownership of the label I was part of at the beginning of my career and as one of the founding members. This is an extremely meaningful moment for me.”
Death Row – which was also the home of the likes of the late Tupac Shakur and Nate Dogg – filed for bankruptcy in 2006 and was sold in 2012, after founder Suge Knight faced serious financial and legal issues.

OHMYGOSSIP — Liam Gallagher is “glad” to be launching a shoe line with Adidas Spezial.
The former Oasis musician – in collaboration with the sports brand – is debuting his new “incredible” trainer line LG2SPZL and to celebrate is putting on a charity gig at the The King George’s Hall in Blackburn on 27 April.
The 49-year-old singer said: “I’m glad to announce my new collaboration with adidas Spezial. It’s our take on the one and only Barrington Smash and it’s absolutely incredible. And if that’s not enough to blow your wig off, I’m going to be playing The King George’s Hall in Blackburn, Lancashire. All proceeds from the gig will be in aid of Nightsafe, a local homeless charity.”
The show – which will be an intimate affair at an 1800 capacity venue – will be the perfect place to hear new tracks from the upcoming album ‘C’MON YOU KNOW’ – which is due out on 27 May – for the first time.
Tickets are exclusively available from the adidas CONFIRMED app – via a raffle – from Tuesday (19.04.22) and close on Friday (22.04.22). Winners will be notified by Saturday (23.04.22) an asked to donate £20 to the homeless charity based in Blackburn.
The band The Illicits will support Liam at the show, who are signed to Alan McGee’s Creation 23 label and have already opened for Primal Scream, DMA’s and Miles Kane.
Following this benefit gig, Liam will hit the road to tour the UK and Ireland – hitting venues in Manchester, Belfast. Glasgow – in June and August.

OHMYGOSSIP — Lorde is “so, so sorry” to have postponed dates on her ‘Solar Power’ tour.
The ‘Liability’ hitmaker was forced to pull out of two dates – at Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Arena on 15 April and The Anthem in Washington, DC on 16 April – and rearrange them for August to due to “horrendus laryngitis”.
In an email to fans, the 25-year-old musicians said: “These past couple days I’ve been pushing through some horrendous laryngitis, and I regret to inform you that my voice hasn’t sufficiently recovered to be able to play the show for you.”
Lorde shared that she didn’t make the decision “lightly” but said it was “impossible” for her to perform.
She said: “I’m so, so sorry. I don’t take postponing a show lightly. I’ve tried everything, and unfortunately it’s physically impossible for me to sing much of the set. Please accept my sincere apologies. All well besides that, and absolutely frothing to party with you when I am able. Rescheduling info to come.”
The Grammy winner has rescheduled the shows to take place on 25 August and 29 August respectively.
The tour was kicked off at the iconic Nashville venue, the Grand Ole Opry earlier this month.
In November 2021, the Grammy winner was “beyond devastated” to be delaying shows in New Zealand and Australia due to COVID-19 uncertainty.
Lorde said: “I am beyond devastated to be postponing these shows. Starting the tour in New Zealand was always really important to me, and would have been a huge high.
“I fought this decision for a long time, but the truth is that touring internationally through a COVID outbreak has a ton of unforeseen moving parts, and I’d much rather play for you when we’re all confident it will go smoothly. I want to apologise wholeheartedly to the fans. I’m so gutted to let you down, but so grateful for your understanding.”

OHMYGOSSIP — The Charlatans, Tim Burgess and Tim Peaks will feature at Signals Festival.
The family friendly Derwent Valley festival – where tickets begin at £55 – will see an array of musical acts take the stage on 11 June at the “unique” event – which is three years in the making – celebrating the best of the Nottingham, Derbyshire and South Yorkshire music scene.
Gareth Murfin and Anthony Clements, the Crich Tramway Village festival’s directors said: “We’ve been planning this for three years now and the result is something really unique that we’re proud of. Where else can you get a vintage tram ride across the Festival site?! Now we just can’t wait for everyone to come and enjoy what we’ve been planning.
“We fell in love with this charming venue as soon as we saw it, so to be able to programme some of our favourite established artists, alongside some incredible emerging talent that we’ve unearthed locally in the regions, is something very special for us.
“Expect a beautiful and relaxed setting, where you can take time to explore the Victorian village, before hopping on a tram up to the music stages.”
Tim Peaks – along with taking to the stage – will do a in-person edition of his ‘Tim’s Twitter Listening Parties’, while The Charlatans will be using their appearance to celebrate 25 years of their classic album ‘Tellin Stories’, and Tim Burgess wil be doing a solo set.

OHMYGOSSIP — Embrace is releasing their eight studio album.
The 90s Britpop band will drop their latest record ‘How to Be a Person Like Other People’ – the follow up to 2018’s ‘Love Is A Basic Need’ – on 26 August, which is about the “journey” of being shown “how to feel”.
Lead singer Danny McNamara said: “I met my wife nearly ten years ago now, we have an incredible daughter and another on the way, but the most loving thing she’s done for me over the years is to try to show me how to love, how to feel, how to be a person like other people. This album is about that journey, that story, and it’s the most joyous, most uplifting, most upbeat, most soulful thing we’ve ever done. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it”.
Richard McNamara – the album’s producer and lead guitarist – lamented that sharing new work withs fans is “always a big deal”.
The 49-year-old musician said: “Whenever we put out a new album it’s always a really big deal to us, we put everything we have into it. We know that there’s something about what we do that people love, that they just don’t get from others bands. It’s like a pact, they want us to be intimate and personal and autobiographical, but they also want us to be confident and rousing and anthemic. It sounds like a contradiction, but I think when we’re at our best we somehow pull it off. I think in that sense this album is the most Embrace album we’ve ever made”
Danny – along with Richard and the rest of the band Mikey Dale, Steve Firth and Mike Heaton – “can’t wait” to go on tour after the COVID-19 restrictions, which kicks off in August at the Aberdeen Music Hall and ends at Norwich University of East Anglia on 11 September.
The 51-year-old rock veteran said: “After being away for so long we can’t wait to get out there and play live again. Our last proper gigs were among the very last before lockdown, so it’s felt like an age. To be playing in the bigger places again is amazing too. Embrace has always been as much about the crowd as it is about the band so I’m sure it’s going to be epic!”

OHMYGOSSIP — G-Eazy has paid tribute to his late mother, with new single ‘Angel’.
Suzanne Olmsted died in November and to mark her first birthday since her passing, her son – whose real name is Gerald Gillum – released the touching track.
He explained in a statement: “Grief can be a difficult thing to navigate. It’s definitely not a linear process and it comes at you in waves. There will never be enough words to describe the feeling of losing your best friend, or the desire to see them again. In a literal sense, I tried to capture that feeling of longing in the lyrics of the song. But ‘Angel’ is so much more than a song or a tribute.
“My mom was more than just my mom, she was everyone’s mom. She was everyone’s teacher. She was everyone’s inspiration. Nothing made her happier than loving people and sharing her creativity with the world. Her energy continues to live on through me, through those she connected with, and through those she inspired.”
The 32-year-old rapper also shared the news of the single on his Instagram page, writing: “HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAMA. ANGEL OUT NOW EVERYWHERE.”
Following Suzanne’s death last year, G-Eazy shared his grief with an emotional message on Instagram.
He wrote: “I love you so much. The shock still won’t let me accept the feeling that I’ll never get to hug you in person again. My queen, my hero, my everything… my mom.
“The tears won’t stop. My eyes hurt, my face hurts, my body hurts, everywhere hurts. There’s no safe place to hide and there’s no way to lay, sit, or stand that doesn’t hurt. The pain is enormous. But I know you’re out of yours and that brings me peace. I love you so much.

OHMYGOSSIP — The Smile’s new album is “pretty much done”.
The band – which includes Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, and Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner – have been busily working on their new record over recent times, and they can’t wait for fans to hear it.
Speaking about their creative process on the ‘Smartless’ podcast, Thom shared: “Jonny had come with a bunch of ideas, and I hadn’t seen him for a while, so they all just came pouring out before I could go, ‘Wait, wait, wait.’ There was a lot of me retrospectively going, ‘Okay, what am I going to do with that?’ Which was really nice.”
Thom admitted that he relished the challenge of making the new album.
He said: “I like trying to find different ways to write lyrics. I like to find different ways to assemble music. I like to learn new instruments, like Jonny.
“It wakes me up in the morning and probably always will, unless I lose my ability to think straight. There isn’t anything else. There’s not like, ‘Now we must move into this area,’ there’s not any sort of aesthetic agenda. You’re influenced by what you listen to. I’m always sort of buying new music.”
The veteran star also revealed that he has two distinctly different ways of making music.
He explained: “With lyrics, it’s something completely different where it’ll either be very quick, very easy, or months and months of chipping away, literally line by line, in the most painstakingly weird anal kind of: trying things, throwing them out, trying things, throwing them out, trying things, throwing them out.
“It gets to the point sometimes where it’s like, ‘well I’ve got this syllable, and I’ve got this consonant, and I’ve got this syllable, and now I’m just going to wait for the rest to turn up.'”

OHMYGOSSIP — Johnny Marr “hit it off” immediately with John Frusciante.
The Smiths star was invited by the Red Hot Chili Peppers rocker to play guitar on his 2009 solo LP ‘The Empyrean’, and the pair had an instant connection in the studio.
Johnny, 58, told Total Guitar magazine: “Without being overly simplistic or corny, guitar players are definitely a breed, and John and I hit it off straight away. There is this obsessive thing with guitar players – whether it’s about sound or scales or models of guitar, it just seems to be part of the package.
“John and I were recording in his house, which was nice. And with him, there was a quiet sort of intensity.”
Johnny also hailed John, 52, for his “almost sacred” approach to music.
He said: “There’s an almost zen-like stillness about his focus when he’s writing. There’s this underlying honour in what he’s doing. John has an approach to music which is almost sacred.”
Similarly, John loved working with the Smiths star and was amazed by his “totally unconventional” approach to music.
He recalled: “It was really fun. I got to see how Johnny’s creative process worked on the guitar. He’s very unorthodox: in The Smiths’ stuff, the guitar is often a thing blending in with the band, but when you actually see the way Johnny comes up with things, and the way he thinks through the instrument, it’s just totally unconventional.
“And it was amazing to see that creative process at work fitting into the context of a pre-recorded piece of music.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Harry Styles debuted two new songs at Coachella.
The 28-year-old singer headlined the opening night of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, on Friday (15.04.22), where he performed ‘Boyfriends’ and ‘Late Night Talking’ from his upcoming third solo album ‘Harry’s House’.
Before performing ‘Boyfriends’, he said: “Who in the audience has ever had a boyfriend? Who in the audience has never had a boyfriend? To boyfriends everywhere, f*** you.”
Earlier, Harry also told the crowd: “It’s big in here, innit? For the next 80-or-something minutes, our job is to entertain you. I promise you we’ll do our absolute very best. You also have one job — that is to have much fun as you possibly can. I want you to be whoever it is you always wanted to be in this field tonight.”
He added: “We have a full moon, you have a ticket and I have to play.”
He also thrilled his audience mid-way through his set by bringing Shania Twain on stage to perform two songs with him, ‘Man! I Feel Like a Woman!’ and ‘You’re Still The One’.
Harry said: “This lady taught me to sing. She also told me that men are trash.”
Shania said: “I’m a bit starstruck, what can I say? No, really, I’m a fan of you, of course. I know that when I was writing this song, you were just a little kid. It’s kind of a dream and very surreal to be sitting here right now to sing this song with you. I think I’m just in love and this song is all about love. So let’s just sing about love.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Billie Eilish gushed that Damon Albarn “changed my life” as he joined her for a surprise duet of Gorillaz’s ‘Feel Good Inc.’ at Coachella.
The 20-year-old megastar couldn’t contain her excitement when the Blur rocker came out to perform his cartoon band’s 2010 hit at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California.
In a touching tribute to the 54-year-old Britpop legend and his three bands, she told the packed crowd: “This is the craziest s*** I’ve ever experienced.
“This man changed my life in a lot of ways and changed my complete view of what music could be, and what art could be, and what creation could be.
“My first favourite band ever was The Good, The Bad and the Queen when I was six and Blur changed the world and Gorillaz changed the world, and this man is literally a genius, and that’s that.”
Billie was also joined by Khalid for ‘Lovely’ and her brother Finneas came out for ‘I Love You’ and ‘Your Power’.
The ‘Bad Guy’ hitmaker made history as the youngest ever headliner of the festival.
Damon’s duet with Billie comes after he recently praised the ‘Ocean Eyes’ singer while downplaying Taylor Swift’s songwriting ability.
He said: “A really interesting songwriter is Billie Eilish and her brother. I’m more attracted to that than to Taylor Swift.
“It’s just darker — less endlessly upbeat. Way more minor and odd. I think she’s exceptional.”
Damon – who received death threats from Taylor’s fans – suggested his remarks had been sensationalised to attract readers and apologised “unreservedly and unconditionally”.
In the interview, the ‘Parklife’ singer insisted he wasn’t “hating” on Taylor but suggested collaborating with other songwriters was “very different” to taking sole responsibility for her work.
He said: “She doesn’t write her own songs. Co-writing is very different to writing. I’m not hating on anybody, I’m just saying there’s a big difference between a songwriter and a songwriter who co-writes.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Liam Gallagher could make an “album of love songs”.
The former Oasis frontman teased that while there are a couple of ballads that made their way onto his hotly-awaited third solo album, ‘C’Mon You Know’, it ended up being a “mad” rock ‘n’ roll record overall.
However, the ‘Wall of Glass’ hitmaker still has some “more chilled” tunes in the vein of Simon and Garfunkel leftover – which could go towards an album full of love songs.
According to the Daily Star newspaper’s WIRED column, Liam said: “During the pandemic everyone was having a moment about how beautiful the world is and what we’ve done to it and, ‘Is this the end?’
“Everyone was going through these mad things and I thought if we do get a chance to do a record maybe everyone will be coming back with these rocking records and saying how much they hate the Government and all this nonsense.
“And so I thought that maybe we would come at it from a different angle, maybe we’ll do an album full of love songs, something a bit more chilled like Simon and Garfunkel kind of thing.”
The 49-year-old rocker added: “There were a couple of songs like that on the go but then it went back to the mad stuff, the rock ’n roll stuff.
“Then it went back to the love, kind of chilled stuff and then we ended up with ‘C’Mon You Know’.
“I reckon there’s half a record left which is a more chilled record.”
‘C’Mon You Know’ is released on May 27.
So far, the album’s title track and ‘Everything’s Electric’ have been released.
The latter blistering rock tune was co-written by Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, who also plays the drums on the track.

OHMYGOSSIP — Sir Elton John gave Charlie Puth a “wake-up call” when he told him his music “sucked”.
The ‘How Long’ hitmaker has revealed he was out for a meal with the 75-year-old music legend when he told him the music he was making in 2019 “wasn’t good”, and he’s thankful to the ‘Tiny Dancer’ hitmaker for being so honest.
Speaking on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ this week, Charlie said: “The most important thing you can do, for all the songwriters watching this, when you write a song, it’s important to tell the truth. I wasn’t really doing that in 2019.
“The person who awoken my sense was none other than Elton John.”
The 30-year-old star – who released the album ‘Voicenotes’ in 2018 – admitted he was “in denial” at the time and wasn’t being true to himself with his lyrics.
He explained: “I was going through a messy breakup, and I think that was also going alongside it. It was kind of a wake-up call. I was in denial a little bit.
“Then, the whole world shut down and I was able to sit with my new way of making music and just decided I would never put out a song again if it weren’t the truth.”
The ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ hitmaker previously revealed that – although he had never opened up about it at the time – he had gone through the “worst break up” of his life that year and had initially wanted to forget all about it before using it as inspiration for his music.
He said: “I never told people what happened to me and the pain that I went through going through the worst breakup of my life in 2019. I just wanted to throw it under the carpet and just start over and surround myself with better people.”

OHMYGOSSIP — The Wombats want to do big festival shows.
The rock trio – which comprises Matthew Murphy, Tord Øverland Knudsen and Dan Haggis – were set to co-headline All Points East festival in London’s Victoria Park with The Kooks back in 2020 but the gigs were cancelled due to the pandemic and while they haven’t been asked to headline again the band admit they would “definitely be up for it.”
Frontman Matthew Murphy told The Daily Star’s Wired column: “We haven’t been approached bout All Points East since the festival restarted but we’d definitely be up for doing it.”
The ‘Kill the Director’ hitmaker went on to explain that it was a “shame” that the gigs were scrapped and remains “hopeful” that a collaboration between The Wombats and The Kooks could happen at some point “in the future.
He added: “It was a shame it didn’t happen, as The Kooks’ singer Luke was excited about it too. We’d been texting each other with plans for all the fun nonsense we could have done together at the festival. Hopefully, it’s something that could still happen in the future.”
The Wombats are about to wrap up their latest arena tour in support of their album ‘Fix You, Not the Wold’, but prior to that, Murph had worked with members of The Killers, Bastille, Alt-J and Pixies for his album ‘Love Fame Tragedy’ and explained how it is “fun to change things up” because he is not as motivated by chart success these days..
He added: “It’s fun to change things up and utilise other people’s talents. I’m not as driven about chart success or being plastered over the radio with The Wombats now. It’s more about seeing where we get to, so there’s not as much need for collaborations. It’s something we should think about, but as a way of thinking outside the box and hitting people up, rather than forcing it into place.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Ricky Wilson has a ukulele signed by Sir Paul McCartney.
The 44-year-old rock star – who shot to fame as lead singer of The Kaiser Chiefs alongside Andrew White, Simon Rix, Nick Baines, Vijay Mistry and former member Nick Hodgson – was playing the Ukulele when he met the left-handed Beatles legend, 79, who signed it for him.
He said: “I happened to be playing the ukulele at the time. He returned it to left-handed and he played it, then wrote on it, ‘To Ricky, my dear, Paul McCartney was here’.'”
The ‘I Predict a Riot’ rocker went on to explain that the instrument is still in its left-handed position and that he has kept it in a glass case for preservation because he “never wants to play it again.”
He told The Metro newspaper: “It’s still tuned left-handed because I don’t want anyone else to ever play it again. That’s why it’s in a glass case. I should have said, ‘No, don’t personalise it, Paul, just write a generic’. That’s probably worth quite a lot of money!'”
‘The Voice’ judge also went on to imply that his days of outrageous rock and roll are behind him, as he noted that the only true part of being an outrageous rock n roll star is the playing and that the rest is just “d****** about.”
He said: “The most rock’n’roll thing you can ever do in a band is play a gig, it just is. ‘All the rest of the stuff isn’t rock’n’roll, it’s just d****** about. The word has been misused for the last few decades to allude to doing something stupid. I’ve been in a band with the same guys for over 20 years, which probably shows you that I haven’t done that much, because the people that do that barely last five. I jumped off a few balconies into swimming pools but, I mean, that’s just stupid. Physically, I was OK, but obviously I wasn’t in the right place mentally.”

OHMYGOSSIP — George Ezra feared he wouldn’t have inspiration to write new album in lockdown.
The 28-year-old singer played a gig at the London Palladium on Tuesday (12/04.22) and admitted that prior to the pandemic he would rely on jotting down his experiences in a diary for inspiration struggled when his 2020 plans were cancelled due to COVID-19 because writing is his “whole schtick.”
He said: “We played our last show of our last record in London at the Royal Albert Hall. After that I had this whole adventure booked – I’m sure we all did for 2020 – but we couldn’t do our plans. For me – writing – I was like ‘Oh shoot, that’s your whole schtick. That is what you do. Now you can’t do it.”
However, the ‘Paradise’ hitmaker turned to old journals in order to pen hit comeback single ‘Anyone For You’ and is set to release ‘Green Green Grass’ ahead of new album ‘Gold Rush Kid’ in June this year.
Speaking live on stage at the London Palladium, he added: “So I started to flick through old journals to see if anything else came to mind.”
