OHMYGOSSIP — Emily Eavis believes Jay-Z headlining Glastonbury broke all “boundaries” for the festival.
The ’99 Problems’ hitmaker was the first hip-hop artist to top the bill at the world-famous event when he took to the stage in 2008, and the organiser thinks it’s proven to be a key moment in the festival’s history because “anyone can headline anywhere” now.
She told Britain’s GQ magazine: “I booked Jay-Z because I thought he would knock it out of the park, because he’s an incredible performer and one of the world’s greatest hip-hop artists.
“It changed the perception of a Glastonbury headliner.
“Anyone can headline anywhere now, there are no boundaries.
“It’s totally normal to see Stormzy headlining, but at that time, it was very much white guitar music.”
These days, the line-up has a more even gender split, which Emily insisted was a necessity.
She said: “It was an obvious change that needed to happen.”
Emily thinks part of the appeal of Glastonbury is the way it celebrates “alternative ways of life”.
She said: “We do environmental campaigning, we do political, we do everything.
“All kinds of alternative ways of life are championed, which is why it sits apart.”
In 2019, Glastonbury banned plastic bottles, which was not an easy task, and though Emily estimates they reduced plastic waste by 1.6 million bottles, she had a bigger goal in mind.
She said: “It’s an example of the ban working. Glastonbury is a [temporary] city the size of Oxford.
“If we can do it, there’s no reason why Oxford can’t do it and then London.”
And next up, she’s got her sights set on crisp packets.
She said: “I’m obsessed with finding a compostable crisp packet.”

OHMYGOSSIP — James Bay finds “sad songs come naturally” to him.
The ‘Hold Back the River’ hitmaker has previously opened up about battlnig anxiety and imposter syndrome in 2019, and his low mood influenced his songwriting at the time, though the mood of his upcoming new album, ‘Leap’, is upbeat because he wanted to try and embrace the positives as well.
He said: “It’s funny because sad songs come naturally to me.
“But then I had a bit of an epiphany after all that happened in 2019. When I was struggling, there were some people in my personal life who were doing whatever they could to lift me up and help me keep my chin up. And for the first time ever, I recognised that in my writing.
“So songs would start sad but instead of getting to a chorus and saying effectively woe is me, boo-hoo, I was saying thank you. I need you. I love you and I’m so grateful. I think the combination of those two emotions in these songs was something I hadn’t really done before.”
The 31-year-old singer admitted many people didn’t realise he was “struggling” as much as he was at the time because he was able to mask his feelings.
He told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: “Underneath, I was having a bit of a crash. On the surface, it didn’t look that way at all and it sometimes feels like my job to make sure it doesn’t look like that, but I was struggling. Just with real insecurity, imposter syndrome, anxiety.”
James acknowledged that the mental health struggles he had then are likely to return at some point.
He said: “What I was going through then, will happen again. It goes in cycles so it’s going to be something to navigate. The horrible reality is I’ll feel some of that again because I’m not really any different from 2019. But I’m trying to take the chance to talk more and see the opportunities that life is offering.”

OHMYGOSSIP — John Frusciante tried too hard to impress people when he joined Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The rocker was just 18 years old when he joined the group in 1988 and despite his talent, he found the first year “a struggle” because he didn’t have enough trust in himself.
He said: “The first year or so that I was in the band was definitely a struggle.
“I’ve got something to say that I think could probably be good for guitar players. I think at the beginning of my time in the band, I had my mind too much on trying to impress people,and I wasn’t trusting myself enough.
“I was feeling all these things – ‘I want to be unique’, ‘I want to show off’, ‘I want to stand out’ – and everything I was doing felt forced.
“I didn’t feel free and I didn’t feel like I was saying anything that I wanted to say. I didn’t feel like I was going deep in myself.”
John ultimately found the best approach was to “simplify” what he was doing and be more collaborative with the rest of the band.
He told Australian Guitar magazine: “By the time we were ending that [first] tour, I got to such a point of unhappiness that I said, ‘I’m just going to throw away all these things that I’m trying to do.
“I’m going to stop trying to grab people’s attention. I’m going to take my ego out of it entirely.’
“I decided I was just going to use my guitar to try to support the other people in my band.
“So I simplified what I was doing. And at the same time, I was also putting a hundred times the amount of personal expression and soul into it than I had before.
“[This] was the step that, all of a sudden, made people respond strongly to what I was doing.
“I wasn’t trying to be a Red Hot Chili Pepper in terms of what I thought other people thought that it was – I just started being myself.
“And that honest version of myself if what you’ve had ever since.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Yungblud’s new album is the “most personal” record of his career.
The 24-year-old singer has revealed that his self-titled third album is almost finished, and he’s given fans an insight into what they can expect, explaining that it’ll explore his life and his childhood.
Speaking to The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column, he shared: “It’s my most personal album yet.
“There’s a lot about my life and a lot about my childhood. I’m excited.”
The ‘Cotton Candy’ hitmaker even revealed that he’s already started work on his fourth album, admitting that he moves “really fast”.
He said: “It’s gonna be great and I’m already writing album four. I’ve got ADHD, so I move really fast.”
Asked if his new album will feature any collaborations, he replied: “There are. As it stands, three, but it’s all up in the air.”
Yungblud previously described himself as a “vehicle for other people’s expression”.
But the music star also feels people are waiting for him to make mistakes.
He said: “I am a vehicle for other people’s expression – the fans have stuck with me, as I fight for them. But other people have been watching me with a microscope, waiting for me to slip up.”
Yungblud – whose real name is Dominic Harrison – knows his personality can be divisive, admitting he’s “everything people hate”.
And the singer – who released his debut album, ’21st Century Liability’, in 2018 – has also confessed to being “cocky”.
He said: “I am everything people hate. I’m loud, I speak my mind and I tell the truth, no matter what. And you know what? I’m a cocky little s***, too.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Red Hot Chili Peppers have announced a 2023 tour of Australia and New Zealand.
The American rock band will be joined by Post Malone as they embark on a six-date stadium tour, kicking off in Auckland on Saturday January 21, before moving on to Dunedin, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
The band wrote on Instagram: “Around the world continues… next stop, down under! Australia New Zealand with @postmalone

Meanwhile, the Chili Peppers admitted they felt like a “new band” after reuniting with guitarist John Frusciante for the 2022 album ‘Unlimited Love’.
Frontman Anthony Kiedis said: “The biggest event, honestly, was John returning to the band. That was the most monumental change in our lives. And God was I down for anything and everything.
“Both Flea and I had a zeitgeist of a feeling inside of ourselves independently which was: ‘It would be really nice to involve John somehow in this process.’ It had been a long time and he was making himself known in our circles again after having been in his very own circle.”
And although he was hesitant about rejoining the band, Frusciante credited Flea with helping him make the decision.
He said: “Flea had put the idea [of rejoining] in my head, and I was sitting there with the guitar thinking that I hadn’t written any rock music in so long. Could I still do that?”

OHMYGOSSIP — Killer Mike has shared his first solo single in ten years.
The Run The Jewels rapper – real name Michael Render – is dropping a new track ‘RUN’ featuring the talents of fellow rapper Young Thug and comedian Dave Chappelle.
The 47-year-old rapper’s new song – which is produced by No I.D – opens with a monologue by the 48-year-old comic and includes a verse from the 30-year-old hip hop star.
The video – which is directed by Adrian Villagomez – shows Mike and a battalion of Black soldiers fighting against white fascists in a war zone. During Young Thug’s guest spot, a banner appears that reads “Free Thug, Protect Black Art, Free Gunna,’ which is believed to be a reference to Thug and fellow rapper Gunna being charged in a 56 count grand jury indictment that alleges they were involved – with 26 other people – in a conspiracy to commit racketeering. Both men deny the charges.
In another part of the video, a soldier is seen wearing an armband stating “Free YSL”, a shout out to authorities labelling Thug’s record label YSL a “criminal street gang”.
The ‘Trigger Warning’ documentary maker – and noted supporter of US left wing politician Bernie Sanders, where at his rallies is known for making impassioned speeches for racial parity – recently noted his “duty” to his “community”.
Mike told the Guardian: “I definitely lead a non-politician life; I smoke weed and I go to strip clubs with my wife, but I care about people and I have a duty to my community. I am not an angry old man – I am a participator.”
He added: “I say that ‘the race for freedom ain’t won / you gotta run because as Black people in America we have to be resilient. We have overcome and we shall continue to do so.”
The hip hop artist – who performs in RTJ with fellow rapper EL-P – carries his activism because he instilled the importance of it by his “elders,” such as his grandparents.
Mike said: “My grandmother did the work of taking care of our neighbours without publicity, and my grandfather did, too – he would go fishing and always give half of his catch to other people, for instance. I don’t see it as making me better. I don’t see it as being driven by celebrity guilt either. I was told by my elders to make sure that the people who are suffering in my community are relieved by me. These are the principles that I operate with.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Max Pope says his music is “better” when you forget the stress of the music industry.
The ‘Counting Sheep’ singer-songwriter says he writes the “best s***” when he forgets about the money grabbing music executives and just does what he wants to do.
The 27-year-old musician told the Independent newspaper: “The best s*** that I make is when I can forget that there’s a f****** music industry out there. It’s better when you’re not aware of the corporate side of it.
Max – who left the prestigious Brit School and was labelled the ‘Next Ed Sheeran’ earlier in his career – says leaving his manager behind “wasn’t a hard decision” because it wasn’t taking him in the direction he wanted to going into.
He said: “I think that momentum thing is b******. It wasn’t a hard decision; I stopped doing it because it wasn’t serving me anymore.”
“I just stopped creating for a while. I needed to just stop and work out what was going on.”
He added: “It took me a long time to realise that I was being pushed in a direction that wasn’t me.”
Max also detailed how Bill Withers’ “simple” music was very influential to his new album, ‘Counting Sheep’ and how his death in 2020 left him “genuinely shattered”.
He said: “His music is very simple. He says it how it is and there’s not a load of pretence. I’ve been inspired by the feeling of that, not necessarily the sound of his music, although that too, but the way it makes me feel.

OHMYGOSSIP — Crosby, Stills Nash back catalogue has returned to Spotify.
The trio removed their music from the popular streaming service six months ago in protest over their continued professional relationship with Joe Rogan after he faced multiple allegations of spreading COVID-19 misinformation on his popular podcast ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’.
Their removal of their songs came after Neil Young demanded Spotify take down his music due to their exclusive distribution deal with the xx-year-old comic – which is worth an reported $200 million – and was followed by other iconic artists, such as Joni Mitchell.
Fans noticed that their songs were back over the weekend and asked member David Crosby – who along with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash make up the band – why it reappeared.
The 80-year-old musician replied: “I don’t own it now and the people who do are in business to make money.”
In March 2021, David’s music was purchased by the Iconic Artist Group – including the publishing and recording rights to his solo work, his songs with the Byrds, Crosby Nash, Stills Nash and Crosby, Stills Nash – owned by Irving Azoff.
In May, David announced that he was no longer touring due to being “too old”.
He said: “I’m too old to do it anymore. I don’t have the stamina; I don’t have the strength.”
David also explained he sold his masters because he had “zero” other choices.
He said: “Spotify doesn’t pay us. I had two ways of making a living, touring and records. Spotify comes along, and I don’t get paid for records anymore,” he said. “That’s half my income, OK? So I think, well, I should be grateful that I can still play live and pay the rent and take care of my family. And then along comes COVID and I can’t play live. The reason I sold my collection is that I didn’t have any other option. None. Zero.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Tyler, The Creator performed a memorable set at Wireless Festival in Crystal Palace on Sunday (03.07.22).
The 31-year-old rap star was among the headline acts at the the festival in south London, and he closed the show in style, performing some of his best known hits for the crowd.
A host of other big-name acts from the world of hip-hop and R’n’B also wowed the crowd in London over the weekend, including Chris Brown, The Kid Laroi, Lil Uzi Vert, Roddy Ricch, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Ghetts, Berwyn, Trippie Redd, Nines, Baby Keem and Playboi Carti.
London-born rapper Little Simz also entertained the 45,000-strong crowd and she admitted that performing at the festival in her home city was a “dream come true”.
The ‘Introvert’ hitmaker also confessed to having “hopped the fence” during her younger years in order to experience the festival for herself.
Elsewhere, A$AP Rocky and J. Cole also performed in London over the weekend, while the festival’s star-studded guests included the likes of Venus Williams, Letitia Wright and Rihanna, who was supporting her boyfriend A$AP.
The 34-year-old singer was seen sporting an oversized black Prada jacket as she walked around the festival site with a number of bodyguards.
Prior to that, the ‘Rude Boy’ hitmaker and Rocky were spotted at a barber shop in London.
Rihanna has recently been keeping a low-profile at her home in Los Angeles after giving birth to her first child, but she was clearly eager to support Rocky during his UK show.
A source previously said: “Rihanna is doing well. They are very excited to be parents. Rihanna is already a wonderful mom.
“Everything Rihanna does, she does it her own way on her own time table, and having a baby is no different. They were just like any other pair of parents-to-be.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Sir Mick Jagger dedicated the Rolling Stones’ gig at BST Hyde Park to Charlie Watts.
The legendary drummer died in August, aged 80, and the band’s frontman paid tribute to him during the latest gig of their ‘Sixty’ tour in London.
After watching some poignant videos screening behind the stage, Jagger – who stars in the group alongside Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood – said: “Watching those videos of Charlie before we came on … you know we played with him for 60 years … We really really miss him. So we’re dedicating this show to Charlie.”
The legendary band performed 19 of their biggest tracks at American Express presents BST Hyde Park, where 65,000 fans came to watch them perform.
The Stones entertained the crowd with some of their best-known records, including ‘Tumbling Dice’, ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’, ‘Honky Tonk Woman’ and ‘Paint It Black’.
Jagger also paid a glowing tribute to his former bandmate shortly after his death, saying he brought a “jazz touch” to the chart-topping group.
The 78-year-old star said last year: “Charlie brought another sensibility, the jazz touch. And he didn’t play very heavy. Sometimes, if I got him mad enough, he would. That was the only way I could get him to play really heavy – to get him mad.”
Jagger explained that Charlie “could do quite subtle cymbal work in some places”.
He added: “Then he could play off my [vocal] riffs with the audience. If you’re a singer, you have a relationship with a drummer which is all about the dance, the accent you’re doing physically as well as vocally.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Wyclef Jean has insisted The Fugees will go ahead with their reunion tour eventually.
The ‘Killing Me Softly’ hitmakers – which also include Lauryn Hill and Pras Michel – announced in September 2021 they would hit the road to celebrate 25 years of their classic album ‘The Score’ but the dates were postponed and ultimately cancelled in March this year due to varying COVID-19 restrictions in the cities they were due to perform in.
And now, Wyclef has urged fans not to “lose hope” as the trio are planning to play the gigs at some point.
Speaking to HipHopDX about the tour, he said: “All I could do is tell you that with the Fugees, I’m very excited and I look forward to it getting rescheduled. I look forward. As a fan of the Fugees, I’m very excited. All I could do is just tell all the fans, do not lose hope, because y’all know we the Hip Hop Grateful Dead. We going to get this thing cracking.”
Elsewhere in the interview, the ‘Ghetto Superstar’ hitmaker teased his upcoming solo album ‘2097’, the follow-up to 2019’s ‘Wyclef Goes Back to School Volume 1’.
He said: “The new album is going to be called ‘2097’, and in the next couple of weeks, we’ll be putting out the first single from ‘2097’.
“I need y’all to go back with me. Go to ‘AfriCali.’ I need y’all to Google, go back to 1990.
“This is four years before the Fugees, so the first song I ever put out were the house music records. It was a house song because back then, we used to dance a lot and we loved house music because of how it made people feel in the clubs.
“All I can do is tell you I was very inspired and y’all know my music is all about the journey. So, get ready, because we got ‘2097’. Prince had ‘1999,’ right? We have ‘2097’.”
When they announced the cancellation of the tour earlier this year, the trio – who split in 1997 to pursue solo careers – acknowledged they “hoped” to reschedule eventually but weren’t committing to anything definite.
They said in a statement: We anticipate and understand disappointment but our anniversary tour will not be able to happen.
“The continued Covid pandemic has made touring conditions difficult, and we want to make sure we keep our fans and ourselves healthy and safe.
“And idea sparked to honour and celebrate this 25th anniversary of The Score but we see now it may not currently be our time for revisiting this past work, We’re grateful for the special night we did get to share with some of you in New York, with that rare live moment.
“If opportunity, public safety, and scheduling allow, we hope to be able to revisit this again sometime soon. THANK YOU for all your love and support throughout the years.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Sammy Hagar says music not being his biggest source of income makes playing shows more enjoyable.
The former Van Halen frontman, 74, insists he continues to play shows for the fulfilment it gives him, not the money, as he’s able to make a better living from his booze empire and books.
The Red Rocker has been in the tequila business for three decades, having started out with Cabo Wabo in 1991.
He’s also released a series of tomes, his most recent being ‘Sammy Hagar’s Cocktail Hits: 85 Personal Favorites from the Red Rocker’.
Because of his other businesses, Sammy is able to pay his band more money than they would ever earn, and he says not relying on the paycheque from gigs, means he feels like he’s still in his “garage band” days.
Speaking on ‘TMZ Live’, he said when asked if he earns more from his other businesses than he does music: “It’s true, it’s absolutely true.
“What’s made it so great for I’m telling you guys, I swear by this anybody if you get lucky enough to get successful outside of music, it makes it so much better in your elder years.
“I’m in my 70s and I’m still going playing music and you know why? Because I don’t have to do it for a living I don’t have to make it my business. So I can pay my band, like more than they can make. You know, I mean, they’re happy. And so they’re happy to play with me that we all walk out on stage. And we’re happy to do it because we don’t have to do it when you’ve been doing it as long as me, man unless you’re Keith Richards … He’s my favourite rock star on the planet. A lot of people are doing it for money, and they go out they punch the clock. And so we do it for fun. It’s almost like we’re in a garage band again, because I make my living in another way and music is something I just love to do.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Guns N’ Roses have cancelled their gig in Glasgow tonight (05.07.22) on “medical advice”.
The concert at Glasgow Green, Scotland being postponed due to “illness” comes after frontman Axl Rose told gig-goers at the ‘Patience’ band’s concert at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday night (02.07.22) that he had slept at the venue after struggling with his voice and falling poorly.
The latest statement posted on their official social media pages read: “Sadly, due to illness and medical advice, GN’R will not be able to perform in Glasgow, tomorrow 5-July-2022.”
They have vowed to reschedule the show and asked fans to hold onto their tickets.
“We are working on rescheduling options for this show so please hold onto your tickets and wait for a further update. We appreciate your understanding and patience.”
The 60-year-old rocker had told the London crowd: “I slept here last night… I’ll be switching the songs around a little bit.”
The concert cancellation comes after reports that fans were left waiting two hours to get into the show at the weekend.
The ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ rockers played two nights at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but due to the delay, opening act Gary Clark Jr. couldn’t perform.
What’s more, they played a shorter set on the second night (03.07.22) going from 22 songs to 19.
‘November Rain’ and ‘Rocket Queen’ were among the songs left out.
Axl and co are next due to perform at the Olympic Stadium in Munich, Germany on Friday (08.07.22).

OHMYGOSSIP — Levellers are set to embark on another ‘Acoustic Tour’ in 2023, and release an album of acoustic re-workings of their “finest compositions”.
The folk rock band are set to follow-up their 2018 companion LP to their 2018 ‘Acoustic Tour’, ‘We The Collective’, with another stripped-back collection and run of dates next year.
It will mark the first time new recruit, guitarist and vocalist Dan Donnelly, will appear on a Levellers record.
The Mark Chadwick-led septet said in a statement: “We are really excited to be recording a new acoustic album, going through some of our old material, re-arranging it for today and doing some new stuff too. Also massively pleased to introduce new member Dan Donnelly to the recording world, and to be working with members of the ‘collective’ again – and some new guys. Then we’re looking forward to touring it! Going around the country’s most beautiful old theatres and some unique and different other venues too. Hopefully see you all there!”
Further details, such as the release date of the new acoustic collection will be announced in due course.
The tour kicks off on February 27, 2023 at Cheltenham Town Hall, and wraps at Buxton Opera House on March 28.

OHMYGOSSIP — Sparks have started work on their next album.
The American art rock duo – comprising brothers Ron and Russell Mael – have teased fans that they are back in the studio working on their follow-up to 2020’s ‘A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip’ and the 2021 soundtrack LP for the movie ‘Annette’.
Alongside a studio snap, the pair simply wrote on Instagram: “Studio update. #newsparksalbum.”
Keyboard player Ron, 76, previously admitted the pair prefer the music they are making now, compared to their early releases in the 70s.
He admitted: “I can’t say it wasn’t fun in the 70s having screaming people in the audience.
“Musically, though, it is more fun now. The fact we are still here, it’s beyond surreal.”
Meanwhile, Sparks won Best Music Film at the BandLab NME Awards earlier this year.
Edgar Wright’s ‘The Sparks Brothers’ film about the iconic duo beat the likes of ‘Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry’ and ‘Oasis Knebworth 1996’ to the crown.
Russell, 73, said in his video acceptance speech: “We’re so honoured to be given the finger by NME.
“Thanks to the great director Edgar Wright and the whole team who made this wonderful film.”
Edgar, who collected the gong, said on stage: “Thanks to Ron and Russell Mael from Sparks.
“Genuine icons, they’ve been going in the business for 50 years and they’re not done yet, they’re still going. Here’s to the next 50 years of Sparks.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Haim are “flexing the muscle” when it comes to their next album.
The pop trio – comprising sisters Alana, 30, Danielle, 33, and Este Haim, 36 – have admitted they never have a specific “timeline” for their albums, as they are constantly getting new ideas and write as they go and don’t like “forcing art”.
Alana’s sisters joked that her doing her debut movie ‘Licorice Pizza’ held up the follow-up to 2020’s ‘Women in Music Pt. III’.
Asked when fans can expect their fourth studio effort, Alana told The Forty-Five: “To be fair, I kinda put a wrench in everyone’s plans by doing a movie.”
Danielle quipped: “Oh, you did a movie?”
Alana continued: “No, but we’re really excited. We always get inspired right when we get off the road and we’ll be back in LA and just doing our thing.”
Este said: “We’re just keeping track of everything that’s happening. Writing everything down”
On not having a set time to complete the LP, Alana said: “There’s never a timeline though, no. That’s the fun thing about it! If there’s a timeline it feels like you’re forcing art and we never want to force anything. We love making things that we love and putting them out in our way and we really care about it. We’re excited.”

She said: “Look, I never say no to anything. But I think what was so special was that we were supposed to be at Glastonbury when I was filming ‘Licorice Pizza’ and then the pandemic happened. So weirdly everything happened for a reason. We shot the movie during the pandemic and it was exactly how we work: all that we do involves family and good vibes and coming together and being inspired by what’s happening around us. Paul [Thomas Anderson, director] very much knows our strengths and really embraced them.”
Director Paul, 52, has helmed a number of the ‘Want You Back’ group’s music videos.
