OHMYGOSSIP — James Bay stopped “caring about consequences” after cutting his hair short on his second album.
The ‘Hold Back The River’ hitmaker ditched his signature fedora and long locks for a floppy short hairdo for 2018’s ‘Electric Light’, and he’s recently reverted back to wearing his hat and loves “feeling at home in my own skin”.
The 31-year-old musician – who released his third solo album ‘Leap’ last week – said: “I think, more than anything, I’ve stopped caring about any consequences. Because I enjoyed the prospect of consequences when I cut my hair short on the second album — I was like, ‘This is gonna rattle some feathers, that’s gonna be fun.’ This time, I am wearing the hat more, but it’s not glued to my head like it once was. And that is fun, because I’m enjoying just sort of feeling at home in my own skin, and in that look, on this album.”
James admits he likes to keep his fans “on their toes” by switching up his looks “in the name of art and creativity”.
He said: “It’s typical for me to go on that kind of journey. When I was 12, I grew my hair long. When I was 17, I cut it very short. And then I grew it really long again. And then I was 27, and I cut it very short.
“I enjoy mixing it up as much as I enjoy giving people something more constant. All in the name of art and creativity, you’ve got to keep everybody on their toes — including yourself.”
The ‘Give Me The Reason’ singer also shared how becoming a father for the first time daughter Ada Violet – whom he has with childhood sweetheart Lucy Smith – in October has changed the meaning of the songs on his latest LP.
He told GRAMMYS.com: “It’s thrown a different light on some of this new music. Somehow it almost makes the most basic sentiment in ‘One Life’ feel sort of even more special. On the one hand, it’s ‘I’ve only got one life and I want you in it.’ On the other hand — regarding Ada — it’s like, ‘I’ve only got one life and I’m so glad you’re in it.’ Because she just turned up and she’s amazing. And ‘Better,’ ‘everything’s better as soon as you’re next to me’ — it’s exactly how I feel having just been in America, so away from Ada for the first time.
“‘Save Your Love’ is a song I wrote to myself to kind of just say, ‘Hey, stick up for yourself. Sometimes people are going to kind of mess you around, and you have to look out for yourself first.’ Now, I think about that song as a sort of advice song. And I think, ‘I wonder if Ada will get something from that one day, because I wouldn’t want her to waste herself on somebody who wasn’t worth it.'”

OHMYGOSSIP — The Maccabees‘ Felix and Hugo White have formed a new band.
The siblings have joined forces with their brother Will and drummer Jamie Morrison to create a new group called 86TVs and they have promised to release new music by the end of the year.
Felix wrote on Instagram: “I’ve been making a record with my brothers for the past few years. It’s taken a second, but we are finally happy with what our new band is ….
“[This week] we played the songs for the first time to a room full of friends and family at Omeara. It was a really, really good time. I’d forgotten how much I missed it. Thank you to everyone there. At some point this year there will be the first recorded music and gigs .. we’re really looking forward to sharing it all with you.
“The band is called @86tvs The people in it are: @hugowhitenoise @popmorrison @willwhitenoise xx.”
Hugo wrote: “We played the first show with our new band. This projects been incredibly precious to us it’s taken a few years to get here! But we made it it became real last night.
“The band is shared between both my brothers, our dear friend Jamie Morrison I.
“Thanks to all that made [the] night so special.
“Can’t wait for everyone to hear the music we’ve been making come see us live.
“Exciting times a new beginning.”
The Maccabees were an English indie rock band, formed in 2004 in London. They released four albums before announcing their split in 2016 and disbanding in 2017 after a number of farewell gigs.

OHMYGOSSIP — Justin Hawkins “loves gay anthems”.
The Darkness frontman insists he has no guilty pleasures and isn’t afraid to say he’s a huge lover of Sir Tom Jones and Dame Shirley Bassey.
He told Classic Rock: “I don’t have guilty pleasures. Somebody else is never going to tell me what I should listen to. Art has to be subjective. I like the big voices from the valleys: Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey. I like a lot of gay anthems.”
The ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ hitmaker’s drummer is Queen sticksman Roger Taylor’s son Rufus Taylor, and he just so happens to be a huge Queen fan as well.
Plus, the likes of the Bee Gees and Bryan Adams.
Justin, 47, said: “All four members of Queen were great songwriters. And the Bee Gees, of course!
I like Ron Sexsmith’s songs too – he’s very underrated. But a friend of mine’s dad
says the only thing that Bryan Adams is better at than singing is songwriting. And I agree. If you want an anthemic mega-song, he’s your man.”
In fact, his favourite singer is the late great Freddie Mercury.
He said: “When you’re into Queen you never have a time in your life when you’re not aware that Freddie Mercury was the greatest of all time. I’ve been obsessed with Bon Scott and Steven Tyler, but all that was against a backdrop of an abiding love for Freddie.”
When it comes to guitarists, Justin loves Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits.
He said: “Mark Knopfler. He’s such an expressive player. His skill is the way he tells a story with his fingers. You never get bored with a long Mark Knopfler solo because he does so many things that are melodic and moving. For that, he’s the best.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Zooey Deschanel was “an extremely frustrated songwriter” before she met Matt Ward.
The 42-year-old actress stars alongside Matt in the band She Him, and Zooey admits she was desperate to achieve success in the music industry after starring in various films and TV shows.
Zooey – who is best-known for playing Jessica Day in the hit sitcom ‘New Girl’ – shared: “With acting, I got success really early on. I was making money at it and I liked being part of a movie or a TV show.”
Despite this, Zooey always wanted to find success in the music business. And she admits that meeting Matt has proven to be a turning point in her life.
She told The Sun newspaper: “Before I met Matt, I was an extremely frustrated songwriter.
“I’d written all these songs and made demos at home but I just left them sitting there.
“I had friends who were in bands and I was jealous that they got to play music.
“And I didn’t just want to be a singer. I love collaborating on music, I love singing harmonies, I love writing back-up parts.”
Matt has also relished the experience of working with Zooey.
The musician described her voice as the “perfect instrument” to work with.
He said: “I remember hearing Zooey’s voice for the first time, as did a lot of other people, in ‘Elf’. I thought to myself, ‘This must be an established singer who probably has several records under her belt’.
“It was incredible to collaborate with her in the studio for that film and to find out that she’d never recorded a solo record.
“Once you hear Zooey’s voice, you remember it. It’s so unique, so expressive and the perfect instrument for me to work with.
“And that’s not even talking about her ability to write vocal arrangements, which is all over the new album and all our past ones. I find that so inspiring to work with, a real thrill.”

OHMYGOSSIP — UB40 have released the official anthem of the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
‘Champion’ features on the new multi-artist album called ‘On Record’, and the single celebrates the the games coming to England for the first time in 20 years.
Robin Campbell said: “We are proud to be representing the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games with the official anthem ‘Champion’. Birmingham represents the best of global Britain and it is our job to showcase this to the world.
“The song is about celebrating the cultural diversity of Birmingham. Birmingham is a city of champions!”
The single is already available to stream, while ‘On Record’ features eleven original songs exclusively written and recorded by new and established music talent.
Matt Doyle – who joined the band in 2021, after Duncan Campbell retired due to ill health – said: “‘Champion’ is all about positivity. It’s about doing what you do best and excelling at that, celebrating being a champion.”
UB40 are celebrating 45 years in the music business with a brand new album called ‘UB45’, as well as embarking on a tour of UK and Ireland.

OHMYGOSSIP — Jay-Z felt “really burned out” before he announced his retirement in 2003.
The 52-year-old rap star retired from the music industry after releasing ‘The Black Album’ – but Jay now realises that he “just needed a break” before he returned with a new record, ‘Kingdom Come’, in 2006.
The award-winning rapper – who even threw a star-studded retirement party – told comedian Kevin Hart on ‘Hart to Heart’: “I tried that [retirement]. I’m terrible at that. I just needed a break. But I really thought that I was really burned out at the time.
“I was releasing an album every year – ’97, ’98 – and then in between that, soundtracks, other people’s album, ROC-A-FELLA, touring back to back … and I had just looked up one day and I was like … ‘I’m tired.'”
Meanwhile, Jay previously revealed that he doesn’t try to follow trends.
The rap legend insisted he wants his music to last the test of time, even if that means it’s not appreciated in the short term.
Jay – who released his critically-acclaimed debut album, ‘Reasonable Doubt’, in 1996 – explained: “Would you rather be a trend, or you rather be Ralph Lauren? You know what I mean; like, you rather be a trend, or you rather be forever?
“I’m the person that looked at the Mona Lisa and be like, Man, that’s gonna be cool in 40 years. I play forever. And so my whole thing is to identify with the truth. Not to be the youngest, hottest, new, trendy thing.”
Despite this, Jay accepts that age is a more relevant issue in rap than other genres of music.
He said: “I think that rap in particular is a young man’s sport.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Zara Larsson thinks songwriting can feel like “speed dating”.
The 24-year-old singer has worked with a host of collaborators during her career, and she admits it’s been a frantic experience at times.
Zara – who has been working on her new album alongside songwriter Rick Nowels and producer Danja – shared: “The fact that I’m in the studio with them [and am] working with them long term, it’s something that I’ve appreciated a lot.
“I’ve been really lucky to be in the studio with great writers, but it’s been kind of like speed dating a little bit.”
Zara has particularly enjoyed working with Rick on her new album.
She said: “It’s like ‘it’s you and me’; like ‘you’re looking into my eyes, and we’re writing this song’, which is great. I feel like it’s authentic and brings out something else.”
Zara also explained how her new album differs from her last record, ‘Poster Girl’.
She told NME: “The drums are a little harder, the vocals are vocalling a little bit more. I would just say I’ve been taking it up a notch, which is hopefully what I would like to do for every album, just step it up; but this one is really f****** good.”
The ‘Lush Life’ hitmaker launched her own record label, Sommer House, earlier this year, after she reached an agreement with TEN Music Group CEO Ola Hakansson.
Asked how long she had been planning the move, the pop star replied: “It takes time, it’s been going on for like two and a half years, but I’m so happy that Ola Hakansson who owns TEN records wanted to sell it to me. He was the first person who asked me and of course I said yes.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Fatboy Slim is releasing ‘Right Here, Right Then’ as a hardback book and in multiple formats to mark the 20th anniversary of his iconic original Brighton Beach Boutique concert.
On this day (13.07.22) in 2002, more than 250,000 fans of the legendary DJ – who launched the Boutique Nightclub in the seaside town – gathered on Brighton Beach in Sussex, England for the free open-air concert, a record number given only 60,000 were anticipated to attend.
Fatboy Slim – whose real name is Norman Cook – commented: “I think I was too stressed on the day about crowd safety to really take it all in, to fully enjoy the experience. Now I feel I can look back at the footage, remember the tunes, that sunset, my home seafront looking like a carnival in Brazil, so many beautiful people having the time of their lives, I have never seen such joyous madness, such good natured abandon… A wise man once described me as ‘a shepherd of moments.'”

OHMYGOSSIP — The soundtrack to ‘Dirty Dancing’ is being released on vinyl to mark the 35th anniversary of the iconic rom-com.
The 1987 classic starred the late Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey as lovers Johnny Castle and Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman.
Jimmy Ienner’s soundtrack includes two multi-platinum albums and multiple singles.
‘(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life’, performed by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, and the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
To mark the milestone, a special collectible watermelon colour vinyl edition of ‘Dirty Dancing (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)’ will arrive on October 14.
The full Side A/Side B playing order of the original soundtrack album, boasting the twelve tracks as they were intended to be heard.
As a personal touch, the vinyl comes with a scented watermelon sticker.
The blockbuster raked in $214 million worldwide and became the first film to sell more than a million copies in the home video market.
The flick’s popularity led to a 2004 prequel, ‘Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights’, a stage adaptation and a TV remake in 2017.
A new sequel is slated for release in 2024.
It will be directed by Jonathan Levine, who recently teased that Swayze – who died of pancreatic cancer, aged 59, in 2009 – “is a part” of the plot.
The ‘Warm Bodies’ helmer said: “Johnny is a part of Baby’s journey in the story.
This film exists in a dialogue with the original. We want to introduce this story to a whole new generation. That said, Johnny’s absence looms large over the story, so it’s a coming-of-age story but also a coming-of-age for Baby’s character in a way.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Drake is to reunite Young Money’s Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj at a special concert series.
The 35-year-old rapper took to Instagram to announce three-day event October World Weekend, which will take place between July 28th and 29th, and on August 1st at various venues in Toronto.
It will see Wayne and Nicki perform in a Young Money reunion on August 1st.
Chris Brown and Lil Baby will take to the stage on July 29th, and an act billed as the “All Canadian North Stars” will perform on July 28th.
Drake shared a picture of a poster about the spectacle, which describes it as being part of the ‘Road to OVO Fest Tour’.
He wrote in the caption: “OCTOBER WORLD WEEKEND I am currently working on bringing OVO FEST around the world in 2023 for the 10th Anniversary but of course we wanted to turn the city up for the summer!!! More event announcements to come Tickets on sale Friday on @ticketmaster (sic)”
Drake recently hinted something big was going to go down in his home city of Toronto.
During a livestream with online gambling site Stake, he said: “Big announcement coming Wednesday for the city.
“Appreciate everyone listening to the new album, embracing something that I wanted to do for a long time. I appreciate all the love.
“Means a lot to me that it’s been this many years, people still tuning in. Being open, showing a lot of love to different s***. I’m back going crazy though.

OHMYGOSSIP — Lizzo and Chris Martin are keen to work together.
The ‘Good As Hell’ hitmaker spoke briefly to the Coldplay frontman to thank him for inspiring her upcoming track ‘Coldplay’ – which will feature on her new album ‘Special’ – and during their chat, they discussed the possibility of getting into the recording studio.
Speaking over FaceTime to Chris during her interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Lizzo said: “I mean, listen, the songs don’t got to come out with me and you. We just got to do it.
“If we sat in the studio and we just worked. You play the piano, I’ll sing. Don’t nobody got to know. Don’t nobody got to know, Chris.”
The ‘Fix You’ hitmaker replied: “I don’t mind people knowing. Honestly. I’d like people to know!”
During their chat, Lizzo thanked Chris for allowing her to sample ‘Yellow’ and to name the track after the band, before explaining the inspiration behind the track as she praised the 45-year-old singer’s songwriting skills.
She said: “I was with somebody, and I was just looking at the stars. And I was with him, and I was singing it. And tears just were coming to my eyes. You have such an incredible ability to move people with the poetry of your lyricism. So thank you so, so much.”
The ‘Viva La Vida’ hitmaker insisted he was delighted to have written “Lizzo’s hook-up song”.
He replied: “Hey, I don’t know how to accept those kinds of compliments. Thank you. If someone had told me 22 years ago, ‘One day, Lizzo’s going to make out to this song,’ I’d be like, ‘Okay, great.’ It’s become Lizzo’s hook-up song, and that’s good.”
Lizzo, 34, quipped in reply: “Oh, that’s baby-making music, baby!”

OHMYGOSSIP — Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band have been announced as the first headliner for the 10th anniversary edition of American Express presents BST Hyde Park.
The Boss is set to return to the UK next year for a series of major concerts, including playing the London landmark on July 6 and 8, 2023.
Springsteen and co will also play Edinburgh’s BT Murrayfield Stadium on May 30, and Birmingham’s Villa Park on June 16.
The shows will mark their first live concerts in the UK since the 2016 ‘River Tour’.
Last year, Springsteen sold his entire back catalogue of music for a whopping $500 million.
The 72-year-old star – who is one of the world’s best-selling artists – sold his masters and music publishing rights to Sony Music in a money-spinning deal.
The agreement saw Sony assume ownership of Springsteen’s entire catalogue, which includes his hit album ‘Born in the USA’.
The rock icon released his first studio album with his long-time backing band the E Street Band, ‘Letter to You’, in six years in October 2020.
Meanwhile, Springsteen recently said he hopes his “spiritual” music speaks to the “soul” of his listeners.
He explained: “To be a spiritual songwriter means that you are primarily addressing the soul of your listeners. I want people to dance. I want people to be entertained. I want people to do their laundry to my music. I want people to vacuum their floors to my music, to diaper their babies to my music. At the same time, I try to insert something that can, in certain moments, address your inner life, you know, by revealing my own inner life.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Florence Welch has received an honorary fellowship from London’s University of the Arts.
The Florence and the Machine star dropped out of Camberwell College of Arts to focus on her music career and had only intended to have a year sabbatical before resuming her studies to “see where the music would go”, however, it ended up going somewhere.
The 35-year-old singer – whose mother Evelyn is Professor of Renaissance Studies, Provost, and Senior Vice President (Arts and Sciences) at King’s College London and incoming Vice Chancellor at the University of Bristol – was visually emotional as she accepted the honour at her old university on Wednesday (13.07.22).
She said on stage in a graduation cap and gown: “I didn’t think this would ever happen.
“As you can tell, I’m so honoured to receive this. As you may know, I was born in Camberwell and the art college loomed very large in my imagination, even before I attended.
“Growing up in Camberwell, everyone who I thought was interesting or cool or who were in my favourite bands seemed to have gone to Camberwell Arts College. But much to my mother’s dismay, as a patron of higher education herself, I stepped straight out of school into working in the nearest bar.
“…Rather than applying for any universities at all, I just wanted to be in a band but at that point in my life there really was no band…it was almost the imaginary there was just a lot of drinking. After a year of that and feeling increasingly lost, I tried to apply to art college.
“…I’m so happy that they [took me]. I have to say, without that space to create and dream in that foundation year, and the structure and sanctuary it provided me, I would not be the artist I am today.”
The ‘Sweet Nothing’ singer might have become an Ivor Novello-winning pop star, but she is still “incredibly sad” that she didn’t finish her degree.
She admitted: “I was always incredibly sad to not have completed my degree, so I cannot tell you what this means to me.”
Florence and the Machine have released five studio albums since 2009, the most recent being May’s ‘Dance Fever’, which topped the UK’s Official Album Chart.

OHMYGOSSIP — Kate Bush has sent an email to an Australian choir heaping praise on their cover of her iconic 1985 hit ‘Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)’.
The 63-year-old pop legend’s classic tune has recently topped the charts in the US, UK and beyond, 37 years after it was released, due to going viral on TikTok after it appeared in ‘Stranger Things’.
Astrid Jorgensen, the founder and director of Brisbane’s Pub Choir, has revealed she was “literally running up that hill” when she got a call from her manager about the note from Kate.
She told The Guardian: “My manager called me and said, you’ve got to get home, Kate Bush has emailed.
“I ran straight back – I was literally running up that hill.”
The message read: “Dear Brisbane Pub Choir. I’ve been so busy that I’ve only just had the chance to watch you all singing ‘RUTH’. It’s utterly, utterly wonderful! I love it so much! Thank you everyone. You sing it really beautifully. I’m incredibly touched by your warmth and all your smiling faces. Thank you!”
She signed off the letter: “With lots of love, Kate.”
The ‘Wuthering Heights’ hitmaker recently revealed she hadn’t heard ‘Running Up That Hill’ for “a really long time” before its viral success thanks to the hit Netflix series.
Kate admitted she chooses not to listen back to her old music and very rarely has to revisit her back catalogue to provide edits if it’s used on other formats.
Speaking to Emma Barnett on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Woman’s Hour’ this week, she said: “I never listen to my old stuff. But then you know, when things like this come along, I’m normally involved in something like you know, maybe doing an edit or revisiting the track for some kind of other reason, I’m working on it. So yeah, I hadn’t heard it for a really long time.”

The concerts are also making an effort to be as environmentally friendly as possible.
A press release notes: “Each night, BMW will be plugging into All Points East’s sustainability policies, with a fleet of all-electric BMW iX providing artist transportation, actively reducing each event’s carbon footprint.”
Meanwhile, H.E.R. recently revealed she is suing her record label to be freed from her “overrun” recording contract.
The 25-year-old singer – whose real name is Gabriella Wilson – has filed a lawsuit against MBK Entertainment, accusing the label of violating California Labor Code section 2855, Rolling Stone reported last month.
Also known as the Seven-Year Rule, the code “prohibits the enforcement beyond seven years of a contract (such as the Agreement) to render services of a special, unique, extraordinary or intellectual character.”
She has been signed to MBK since 2011, and says her contract should have ended in 2019.
The lawsuit read: “Since May 19, 2011, MBK has exclusively owned her services as a recording artist and has exclusively owned the right to exploit her name and likeness for her recordings under the Agreement.
“Wilson has not been free to provide her recording services except as permitted or dictated by MBK.”
The Oscar winner alleges that her manager, label owner Jeff Robinson, sacked the attorney representing her and employed a new lawyer to work for his client.
However, there is no fee agreement or a conflict waiver in writing for H.E.R. and the lawyer’s work was allegedly a “favour” for Robinson.
Wilson was just 14 when she signed the deal and wants the contract to be made “unenforceable”.
She is also seeking restitution and reimbursement for court fees from MBK.
The ‘Damage’ singer was still at school when she got signed and didn’t think about being a successful singer at the time.

OHMYGOSSIP — Sir Mick Jagger says avatar shows like ABBA’s offer up endless opportunities for veteran acts.
The Rolling Stones frontman hasn’t considered whether the ‘Start Me Up’ rockers – who have been touring for 60 years – could have their own digital hologram concert in the future, but he is intrigued by the “technology breakthrough”.
Speaking to Matt Wilkinson on Apple Music Hits, the 78-year-old music legend said: “That would be stupid to me to give you a one-line answer, because I haven’t really honestly thought about it.
“The ABBA thing gives you this kind of technology breakthrough, which, I haven’t actually seen it yet.
“I was supposed to go and see it, but there was a train strike. So I didn’t get to go. I wasn’t going on the train, but … the traffic was horrible, so I can’t really answer that.
“Obviously technology is going to give you some of the answers to this, and who knows what technology lies in store down the road?
“We’re already in an AI world of doing this stuff, and you can do a lot of musical stuff with not very complicated computerisation, as well.”
In May, the Swedish icons launched their spectacular ‘ABBA Voyage’ concert featuring their ‘Abba-tars’ (holograms) at a purpose-built arena in Stratford, east London.
The 90-minute show features pre-recorded classics mixed with the band’s new numbers such as ‘Don’t Shut Me Down’.
ABBA played their last concert just over 41 years ago.
The avatar shows could go on even after the group – comprising Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad – have left this world.
And the ‘Super Trouper’ hitmakers recently teased they are planning to use their concert holograms for “exciting new things” in future.
They said: “If you are an ABBA fan, who loyally has stuck with us for many years, our hope is that you will see the Abba-tars as agents in the new story, which may lead to exciting new things in the future.”
