Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson’s Symphony reigns on Billboard’s TiKTok chart thanks to Dolphin memes

OHMYGOSSIP — Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson’s ‘Symphony’ has remained at the top of TikTok’s Billboard Chart for three weeks running – thanks to a dolphin meme craze.
The 2017 hit has seen a resurgence in popularity as users continue to post their confessions over a picture of dolphins jumping out of water soundtracked to the chorus of the pop tune.
The song is holding on to the number one spot on TikTok’s Top 50 Music Chart and TikTok’s Billboard Chart, and streams have spiked to more than two billion thanks to the social media trend.
Jack Patterson of Clean Bandit commented: “The mad thing about the dolphins is that it feels like Gen Alpha have latched onto the original feeling of the melodies and chords that we wrote. Because what no one knows, is that when we first wrote the song, the lyrics were initially completely different:
“I’ve been hearing symphonies
With you all I heard was silence
A requiem for you and me
And every melody is timeless
You had me fooled
You had me scared
Thinking I’m no one without you there
But with you gone
I can hear my heart
And if you want the truth
Music sounds better without you.”
He added: “The dolphin memes – which are essentially fml memes, using our most triumphant, joyful music, but with a sentence written over dolphin pictures about utter despair – tap into this original lyricism that was inspired by the chords in the first place! So, it is very interesting to us.”
Surf Curse’s ‘Disco’ sits at number two on the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart, followed by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ ‘Die With A Smile’.

Alison Moyet felt she had to be ‘voluminous to be heard’

OHMYGOSSIP — Alison Moyet developed her signature singing style because she “had to be voluminous to be heard”.
The 63-year-old musician – known for her time in synth pop duo Yazoo – played in local punk rock bands growing in the 1970s and ’80s, and her famous vocals were honed by having to keep up the volume at home.
Speaking to Record Collector magazine, she said: “Because there was all this shouting, I had to be voluminous to be heard, and because of my family, I had no inhibition about showing emotion because everyone wore everything on their skin.
“It was all out on show.”
Alison embraced the punk scene early on, ending up in a local band called The Vandals, and she felt like it was a natural fit.
She recalled: “It wasn’t a big deal. I already felt very ‘other’ to everybody else. FOr one I was built to pull a car. I was always heavy set.
“And I came from a very physical family, so we were very physically able. And it was also quite an aggressive family.
“My dad grew up in a French peasant family, that was his way of describing it; you know they were of the country. They had to live by their wits.”
Her father’s background in occupied France impacted her own upbringing, where everyone was “screaming and shouting” at home, which gave her a sense of courage.
She explained: “He was a young lad in occupied France, and he would earn his extra vitamin biscuits by street fighting.
“So, it was quite brutal. I grew up in this house, where there was screaming and shouting. When I was young, I was inordinately brave.
“I got that from my dad; I was expected to stand up for myself. So, there was no fear about getting up onstage.”

Pharrell Williams and Neptunes collaborator Chad Hugo

OHMYGOSSIP — Pharrell Williams is no longer speaking to his Neptunes collaborator Chad Hugo.
The musicians had been friends since high school but in March, Chad filed a trademark opposition at a federal tribunal, which has caused a rift between the pair, though the ‘Happy’ hitmaker insisted he still wishes “the best” for his former pal.
Asked about their relationship, Pharrell told The Hollywood Reporter: “I always wish him the absolute best.”
And then asked if they are on speaking terms, he added: “No. But I love him, and I always wish him the absolute best, and I’m very grateful for our time together.”
Pharrell also confirmed to the outlet that Chad had voiced his own character for his new LEGO-animated documentary ‘Piece by Piece’.
The rift began when Chad’s legal team claimed Pharrell had “knowingly and intentionally” filed trademark applications for his band N.E.R.D., his Miami hotel Goodtime Hotel, and more without consulting Hugo, despite being “fully aware” that his partner should have been listed as a co-owner.
His lawyer wrote: “Throughout their over 30 year history, [Hugo] and Williams agreed to, and in fact, have divided all assets.
“By ignoring and excluding [Hugo] from the any and all applications filed by applicant for the mark ‘The Neptunes,’ applicant has committed fraud in securing the trademarks and acted in bad faith.”
Elsewhere in the interview, the ‘Happy’ hitmaker revealed he has rejected approaches to sell the rights to his back catalogue, insisting there is “no number” that would persuade him to do so.
He said: “Selling is not for me. There’s no number to sell your rights. Not for me. But to each his own. For some people, I guess, it makes sense. When they’re done, they’re done. But I love music and I love my work, and I love my ability to make music, so selling is not a thing.”

Sir Elton John finishes work on new album

OHMYGOSSIP — Sir Elton John has finished work on his 32nd studio album.
The ‘Tiny Dancer’ hitmaker has handed over the finished record to his label and had planned for it to come out towards the end of the year to coincide with his new documentary, ‘Elton John: Never Too Late’, but plans are now up in the air because the 77-year-old singer is battling a serious eye infection that has left him with limited vision.
A source told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column: “Elton has quietly been working on the album all year.
“The initial plan was for a Christmas release and to end the year on a high with the new album and his new documentary.
“But his health has meant things are up in the air.
“A few people are surprised that Elton has managed to complete it by the end of the summer, but now it has officially been handed in.”
Elton – who retired from touring following the conclusion of his ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour’ in 2023 – recently revealed there are a string of young British pop stars he is keen to collaborate with.
He told Variety: “There are plenty of young singers around. I mean, this has been the summer of the great female singers and songwriters. Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Charli XCX and Gracie Abrams — they’ve just ruled it. They’ve made records that are really good songs, and they brought a lot of joy to the people. And the songs are really good songs, so I’m happy to sing with any of those people.”
The ‘Your Song’ hitmaker dubbed ‘Shake It Off’ hitmaker Taylor, 34, the biggest “phenomenon” since The Beatles.
Asked if he’d like to do a duet with her, he replied: “She’s a great songwriter, she’s a great artist and she’s a phenomenon. I’ve never seen a phenomenon like that since the Beatles, and she works her a** off, so good luck. Good luck to her.”

Long-lost Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers doc to be released

OHMYGOSSIP — A long-lost Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers documentary is set to be finally screened in cinemas.
‘Heartbreakers Beach Party’ – directed by Cameron Crowe – will be shown on the big screen this year after receiving a full restoration, over 40 years after it was filmed in 1983.
The film follows the band as they recorded and promoted their fifth album ‘Long After Dark’, which will be reissued next month.
‘Heartbreakers Beach Party’ was Crowe’s directorial debut but it never made it to cinemas before.
Crowe said in a statement: “‘Heartbreakers Beach Party’ occupies a special place in my heart. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers leaned into the making of the film with a kind of hilarious music-filled honesty that still feels fresh 40 years later. It was also my first experience as a director.
“The fact that it was yanked from MTV after only one airing at 2:00 A.M. just shows that it was indeed an outlandish feast for fans in all the best ways.
“Thanks to Adria Petty and the Petty Estate, along with our co-filmmakers Danny Bramson, Phil Savenick, Doug Dowdle and Greg Mariotti, I’m so happy we’re bringing it back in all its reckless glory.”
The film will be released in cinemas worldwide for two days only, October 17 and 20.

Paul Stanley promises KISS avatar show is a ‘must-see go-to experience’

OHMYGOSSIP — Paul Stanley has promised the upcoming KISS avatar show will be “beyond anything that anyone else has contemplated”.
The 72-year-old musician explained he is confident the show will wow fans after KISS’ catalogue, brand name and IP were acquired by Pophouse Entertainment, the company behind ABBA‘s ‘Voyage’ show.
Speaking on Billboard’s podcast ‘Behind The Setlist’, he said: “People just are thrilled with [‘Voyage’]. I took my wife last month, and I had seen it last year. So Pophouse understood what we wanted to do and that what we wanna create is something that’s state of the art today.”
He added that the technology has improved since Voyage launched and he is confident that the addition of George Lucas’ Industrial Light Magic, will provide a thrilling experience for fans.
He said: ““What I can tell you is that the technology that’s being used, which is a furthering of the technology used on the ABBA show, has to be installed and basically a building has to be built around it.
“So this isn’t something where you’re in Kansas City today, and tomorrow you fly with your projector to do it. It demands an arena, so to speak that’s really solely used for a show like this.”
However, Stanley is not impressed by people referring it to as an “avatar” show.
He said: “That term seems to get thrown around a lot, but the idea of a simulated concert is not what we wanna do. Frankly, I would find that that boring. What we’re creating is an immersive experience that KISS fans will love and people who have never been exposed to KISS or might not like certain aspects of the band will have to see.
“It’s a must-see go-to experience. So it’s beyond anything that anyone else has contemplated. The whole idea, again, of doing a simulated concert is — that’s the dark ages to us.”

LL Cool J went incognito round New York to research his new album

OHMYGOSSIP — LL Cool J went incognito to “reacquainted with the world” for his new album.
The hip hop legend – who is performing at tonight (11.09.24) MTV Video Music Awards – released new album ‘The FORCE’ last week, and he did everything he could to slip out unnoticed to really experience New York again after becoming “disconnected” thanks to his success.
He told the ‘Smallzy’s Surgery’ podcast: “What I wanted to do is just do a record that really dived into what is going on in the world today. The one thing I learned is, you can’t connect with people if you can’t relate to people.
“I did everything, here in New York, travelling around on the subway during the pandemic with a mask on anonymously, going places where no on would think I would go all by myself in the middle of the night, and just getting reacquainted with the world.
“Even hosting these [award] shows, people jumping in and out of Ubers, you forget about danger, you forget about what’s going on in the real world.
“It’s easy to get disconnected, it’s easy to forget where you came from.”
While the record “deals with all kinds of issues”, the 56-year-old rapper wanted to make sure it wasn’t “preachy” or just him on a “soap box”.
He also wanted to make sure the all-star list of collaborations – including Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Busta Rhymes, Nas and more – were all done for a reason.
He explained: “The thing is, they’re not there just because of who they are, they’re there because it made sense sonically… They’re in there in a way that makes sense for the song, and the song called for that artist. So I didn’t just randomly pick whoever.”
LL Cool J admitted in the past he has been “guilty” of using collaborations and guest spots in an “uninspired way.
He said: “I’ve kinda been guilty of doing some work that isn’t always as inspired as it should be. You may have relationships and you bring people in, but you don’t always use them to the best or maximise the opportunity to work with these great artists.
“I’ve done that, I’ve made that mistake in the past, so I definitely didn’t wanna do that on this album. If I wanted to bring people in, it has to make sense for the song.”

Coldplay teases pair of stadium shows in support of Music Venue Trust

OHMYGOSSIP — Coldplay have teased two 2025 stadium shows in support of the Music Venue Trust.
Posters from the rock band’s first ever concert at Camden’s Dublin Castle in 1998 – when they went by the name The Coldplay – were hung up at the north London venue over the weekend, and additional handwritten notes confirmed a pair of concerts at Craven Park in Hull and London’s Wembley Stadium in August next year.
It stated that 10 per cent of money raised from the gigs will benefit the Music Venue Trust, which supports grassroots venues and up-and-coming artists.
The notes also stated that the shows will be 100 per cent solar, wind and kinetically powered.
Beverley Whitrick, the chief operating office of MVT, shared the posters to Instagram and wrote: “The coolest poster has just gone up in the Dublin Castle’s window.”
Coldplay also posted a video of the promo from the outside of the venue on the group’s Instagram Story.
Chris Martin and co are currently completing their global ‘Music Of The Spheres’ tour.
In July, it was rumoured that the ‘Feels Like I’m Falling in Love’ hitmakers were planning a 10-night residency at Wembley Stadium.
The ‘Viva La Vida’ group are preparing to release their new album ‘Moon Music’ in October but rather than embark on a traditional tour to support the release, they were claimed to be exploring alternative options to help reduce their carbon footprint, which could be done by keeping their stage production in one place.
A source told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column at the time: “Coldplay want to do something super special for ‘Moon Music’ and they have discussed the idea of doing a set residency rather than touring across the UK.
“Wembley has been mooted as a possible location which would work for a ten-date residency, for example.
“It means they would be able to play to almost a million fans, all while keeping down their carbon footprint.
“On their last tour the band went all out to try to reduce the impact of their work on the environment.
“By keeping the shows in one place they are removing the need for HGVs to drive the stages and kit across the country, for example.
“Plus seeing acts like Adele setting up shop in one place has given them real food for thought.
“Nothing is set in stone yet but they hope they can get a residency to work.”
In June, the ‘Yellow’ hitmakers revealed that the first two years of their ongoing ‘Music of Spheres’ world tour had seen a 59 per cent reduction in carbon emissions compared to their concert series in 2016 and 2017.

Jane’s Addiction cancel gig after on-stage scuffle

OHMYGOSSIP — Jane’s Addiction cancelled a show in Connecticut following an on-stage bust up between frontman Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro.
The band’s gig in Boston on Friday night (13.09.24) came to an abrupt end after Farrell, 65, appeared to throw a punch at his bandmate during a heated confrontation in front of the audience, and the band went on to scrap a planned gig at the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater in Bridgeport, Connecticut on Sunday night (15.09.24).
The band issued an apology via social media, writing: “We want to extend a heartfelt apology to our fans for the events that unfolded last night.
“As a result we will be cancelling tomorrow night’s show in Bridgeport. Refunds will be issued at your point of purchase – or if you purchased via a third-party reseller (StubHub, SeatGeek, etc.), reach out to them directly. Thank you Jane’s Addiction.”
It comes after Perry Farrell’s wife Etty Lau Farrell defended her husband and attempted to explain what happened onstage.
She blamed a combination of “tension and animosity”, Perry’s frustration at “his voice being drowned out by the band” and the band “starting the song ‘Ocean’ before Perry was ready” as the reasons for his shocking outburst.
She shared a video of the incident on Instagram and wrote: “Clearly there had been a lot of tension and animosity between the members … the magic that made the band so dynamic. Well, the dynamite was lit.
“Perry got up in Dave’s face and body checked him. WHY: Perry’s frustration had been mounting, night after night, he felt that the stage volume had been extremely loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band.
“Perry had been suffering from tinnitus and a sore throat every night. But when the audience in the first row, started complaining up to Perry cussing at him that the band was planning too loud and that they couldn’t hear him, Perry lost it.”
She went on to add the singer was fuming for an hour after the scrap but eventually broke down in tears. She added: “Perry was a crazed beast for the next half an hour – he finally did not calm down, but did breakdown and cried and cried.”

Nicki Minaj announces Pink Friday 3 album

OHMYGOSSIP — Nicki Minaj is set to release the brand-new album ‘Pink Friday 3’.
The 41-year-old rapper took to social media over the weekend to explain why she decided to scrap the ‘Gag City Reloaded’ deluxe edition of her LP ‘Pink Friday 2’ in favour of a whole other album in the series.
The ‘Anaconda’ hitmaker promised to announce the release date “in the next couple of weeks” and vowed to drop a new song from the project before then.
In a lengthy post on X/Twitter, she wrote: “Instead of doing a DELUXE to Pink Friday 2, I’ve decided to do a brand new album.
I’ll still incorporate new songs like #Mamita and [The “anxiety” song] for the remainder of the tour tho…and I’ll announce the new date within the next couple weeks. The new music is just too good to be thrown away on a deluxe album. (sic)”
She went on: “Last night, the songs I recorded were just way too iconic. I love you guys so much. You know that. I know you do. I’ll still give you something leading up to the announcement, so no worries.”
Reiterating that the new tracks deserve their own album with a “specific” tracklisting, she added: “It’s just very special to me for so many reasons you guys aren’t aware of.
“I put every song on there in a specific order, etc. So to honor that, I’m going to give it the respect and integrity it deserves as a beautiful body of work and not add anything else to it. 1 or 2 songs is no big deal but 5-7 songs feels a little sloppy right now (In my humble opinion). (sic)”
‘Pink Friday 2’ dropped in December, and featured the likes of J. Cole, Drake, Lil Wayne, Future, Lil Uzi Vert, 50 Cent, Monica, and Keyshia Cole.
‘Pink Friday’ was Nicki’s acclaimed 2010 debut album and received a follow-up in the form of 2012’s ‘Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, which saw her experiment with dance-pop and boasted her beloved hit ‘Starships’.

The Smiths’ late bassist Andy Rourke to be honoured with Manchester mural

OHMYGOSSIP — The Smiths’ Mike Joyce has launched a fundraiser for a permanent mural of late bandmate Andy Rourke in Manchester.
The rock group’s drummer has setup a Crowfunder page for the memorial in memory of the late bassist – who died last May aged 59 following a battle with pancreatic cancer – in his home city.
In a statement, Mike, 61, said: “Thanks to this Crowdfunder, fans of Andy and The Smiths can contribute to a permanent memorial in his and the band’s hometown of Manchester, but also increase awareness of this debilitating disease and raise money for the charity Pancreatic Cancer Action.
“The mural will not only serve as a permanent tribute to Andy’s legacy as a brilliant musician but also as a memory of the funniest, sweetest lad I had the pleasure of knowing.”
The fundraiser has as goal of £15,500 to cover all the costs of the art and some of the money raised will go to the charity Pancreatic Cancer Action.
At the time of writing, £3,721 has been raised, not including Gift Aid, and anyone who contributes will receive a signed picture of the art signed by Mike and the artist.
The mural is set to be unveiled in November.
News of the mural comes days after Morrissey claimed Johnny Marr has “blocked” the release of a greatest hits album by The Smiths.
The 65-year-old former frontman of the iconic Manchester group says he and Warner Records were working on the collection entitled ‘Smiths Rule OK!’, as well as a re-issue of the band’s 1983 debut single ‘Hand In Glove’, a deluxe boxset of their self-titled first album to mark its 40th anniversary, and “a new 7-inch” disc of their 1992 classic ‘This Charming Man’ – but it was all allegedly “rejected and halted” by the group’s 60-year-old guitarist.
In an entry on his website (www.morrisseycentral.com), in which he shared some of the artwork, Morrissey wrote: “The proposed greatest hits album by The Smiths entitled Smiths Rule OK! has been blocked by J Marr. The album (above), and also the single Hand In Glove (below) were planned for 2024 worldwide release by Warner Records along with a deluxe box release of The Smiths first album in order to commemorate its 40-year anniversary, and also a new 7-inch of This Charming Man. Warner approached Morrissey and Darren Evans to assemble artwork for all four releases, all of which were rejected and halted out of hand by J Marr.”
The singer also recently claimed Johnny “ignored” a “lucrative” offer for The Smiths to reform in 2025.
He wrote on his website: “In June 2024 AEG Entertainment Group made a lucrative offer to both Morrissey and Marr to tour worldwide as ‘The Smiths’ throughout 2025.
“Morrissey said Yes to the offer; Marr ignored the offer. Morrissey undertakes a largely sold-out tour of the USA in November. Marr continues to tour as a special guest to New Order.”
After putting out much-loved albums ‘The Smiths’ and ‘Meat is Murder’ – and landing three Top 10 hits – Morrissey and co split in 1987 after only five years together.
Morrissey and Johnny haven’t seen eye-to-eye for some time now, owing to the former’s controversial political opinions.

Sabrina Carpenter thanks ‘cats and dogs’ as she wins first-ever MTA VMAs trophy

OHMYGOSSIP — Sabrina Carpenter thanked her cats and dogs “watching at home” as she won her first-ever MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) gong on Wednesday night (11.09.24).
The 25-year-old singer and actress beat off competition from the likes of Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Jack Harlow, and Teddy Swims to scoop the Song of the Year prize for ‘Espresso’, and she didn’t forget her beloved pets.
Speaking to the audience at the UBS Arena in Long Island, New York, she said: “I’ve literally never won one of these. This is really special. The first people I want to thank are the fans.
“If you clap after everything I say, they’re gonna call me off the stage, so one second. But I just want to say that you guys are the reason that I get to do what I love, but also the reason that we get to have so much fun and share music with each other.
“And I just feel so grateful to have the best, truly, the best fans in the world. I know it sounds cheesy, but I love you.
“Thank you, thank you to my managers, thank you to my family, my cats and dogs at home watching, and thank you to the people who made ‘Espresso’ with me.
“I love making music with you and I can’t wait to share more music with you. And thank you.”
Sabrina – who is dating Irish actor Barry Keoghan, 31 – also performed at the ceremony, singing ‘Please Please Please’, ‘Taste’, and ‘Espresso’, during which she shocked fans by smooching an alien.
Eminem opened the show by performing songs ‘Houdini’ and ‘Somebody Save Me’, which are both from his latest album, ‘The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)’.
The rapper recreated a set from his performance at the 2000 VMAs, when he filled the stage with lookalikes.
During his rendition of ‘Somebody Save Me’, Jelly Roll appeared virtually for a duet.
Other performances on the night saw Camila Cabello debut her latest single ‘Godspeed’.
Halsey, Anitta, Benson Boone, Lenny Kravitz, and Megan Thee Stallion, who hosted the ceremony, also performed.
