OHMYGOSSIP — Ellie Goulding has started to acknowledge that she is “good” at writing pop songs.
The 36-year-old singer shot to fame more than a decade ago with hits such as ‘Starry Eyed’ but went on to experiment with various sounds over the years and explained upon the release of her fourth album ‘Higher than Heaven’ that the “purpose” of the pop genre is escapism.
She told NME: “My new thing is acknowledging the things I’m good at, and I’m good at writing pop songs. I’ve made a classical album, I’ve made electronic music and I regularly give my vocal away to producers like Four Tet. There are so many genres of music that I’ve been lucky to explore but when it comes down to it, I really just love making big pop songs that you hear on the radio. We forget that the purpose of pop is to escape. I realised that a lot of the songs that brought me joy when I was younger were the ones that made me want to move my body. I didn’t know what the lyrics meant, but I’d sing along anyway.”
The ‘By the End of the Night’ hitmaker went on to add that whilst it wasn’t her “intention” to make an album that would make people “forget their worries”, it was what was needed following the “bizarre” times of the COVID-19 lockdowns.
She added: “I didn’t intentionally make an album that people can dance to and forget their worries, it’s just what we needed to do for ourselves coming out of a really bizarre, surreal time. My first album ‘Lights’ was so heavily interpreted and analysed, it made me think that I was supposed to be doing something that perhaps wasn’t in my instincts. I was writing all the songs myself so people assumed they must all be deep and meaningful. A lot of those songs [on ‘Lights’] were about stuff I’d gone through, but it was also a love letter to the electronic music that I grew up listening to.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Lasse Wellander has died at the age of 70.
The musician was most known for having played the guitar on 24 classic tracks performed by Swedish pop supergroup ABBA but passed away on Good Friday (07.04.23) following a short battle with cancer, his family has confirmed.
A statement posted to Facebook read: “It is with indescribable sadness that we have to announce that our beloved Lasse has fallen asleep. You were an amazing musician and humble as few, but above all you were a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather.
“Lasse recently fell ill with what turned out to be cancer that had spread, and early on Good Friday he passed away surrounded by his loved ones. We love and miss you so much.”
Following the news of Lasse’s passing, the ABBA Museum was the first to pay tribute to the tragic musician as they remembered how much he had worked with the ‘Waterloo’ hitmakers throughout their career.
Their statement read: “After a short period of illness our beloved friend and the absolutely brilliant guitarist Lasse Wellander has passed away. He was the most caring and lovely person and a truly devoted musician. Please take a moment and listen to all his fantastic guitar playing for ABBA – from the early years to Voyage.”
Lasse began touring with Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Björn Ulvaeus, and Benny Andersson during the height of their fame in the 1970s but can be heard playing on some of their biggest hits, including the likes of ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’, ‘Take a Chance on Me’, ‘The Name of the Game’ and ‘Voulez-Vous’, and also assisted on the creation of their jukebox musical ‘Mamma Mia!’ in 1999.

OHMYGOSSIP — Dementia-stricken Tony Christie is putting his own spin on ‘Thank You for Being a Friend’ to raise money for charity.
The ‘Amarillo’ hitmaker is recording a version of his pal Andrew Gold’s 1978 tune as a thank you to all the carers out there for the Music for Dementia campaign for Thank You Day 2023 (02.07.23).
The campaign raises awareness of the positive impact music therapy can have on those with the neurocognitive disease, which causes memory loss.
Tony – who turns 80 on April 25 – is quoted by the Daily Mirror as saying: “I continue to tour as I’ve found music improves the symptoms of my dementia. So every time I go on stage and work it’s helping me.
“If anyone deserves a thank you it’s the UK’s unseen – and unsung – army of carers. This one’s for them!”
Despite his diagnosis, which he revealed to the world on ‘BBC Breakfast’, in January, the music legend has never been busier and has a tour and two albums in the pipeline.
According to the MailOnline, Tony said: “The specialist that put me on these very strong tablets said the fact I’m listening to music and singing is one of the best things that slows dementia down.
“I’m finding it difficult to do my crosswords, but I just accept it and carry on. I’m 80 in a couple of weeks’ time, but I’m busy and I like it that way.
“I’m off to Nashville in June, I’ve been three times before, but I’ve always been busy working so this time I’m taking my wife, I want her to enjoy it.
“I’m doing two albums, I’m touring all this year and going into next year as well. I’m working hard and it’s helping me.”
The singer was assessed for the degenerative condition last year after noticing he was having problems with his memory.

OHMYGOSSIP — Niall Horan gets his One Direction bandmates to critique his solo music.
The 29-year-old singer will release his third album ‘The Show’ on June 9, and he’s revealed he sent the songs to Louis Tomlinson, 31, for his “honest opinion”.
He told Esquire magazine: “Not every time, but if I feel like I need an opinion, I always send it out.”
Niall – who shot to fame alongside Louis, Harry Styles, 29, Liam Payne, also 29, and former member Zayn Malik, 30, in the ‘History’ group – continued: “This time I sent it to Louis, and he gave me his honest opinion on it, which is always handy.
“We’ve released enough songs over the years, so we know what’s decent and what’s not. All the 1D boys and artists alike, I’ll always try and send it around and get everybody’s opinion.”
The ‘Heaven’ singer recently admitted it was “scary” bringing out a new album after a three-year break.
Announcing ‘The Show’ in a letter to fans, he wrote: “What makes this record incredibly special to me is it’s a reflection of where I am in my life today, as a person, a musician, and of course, as a songwriter. Can’t say I’m not a little nervous, but hopefully, you’ll still like this version of me when you listen to the new record.
“There’s something really scary about being away for so long and coming back with new music, but I couldn’t be more thankful for all you amazing people that have stood by and supported me all of these years.
“These songs are for you, as much as they are for me.”
Meanwhile, the ‘Slow Hands’ hitmaker recently revealed he wants to make a “heavier” rock record.
The Irish star is a big fan of 1970s bands such as Led Zeppelin and would love it if he could channel his influences into some new songs that would take his music in a very different direction from his signature sound.
He told the Daily Star newspaper’s Wired column: “I really want to lean into that 70s rock thing.
“I really want to lean into it, some of my favourite stuff is from the 70s and it is heavier.
“So I would love to get into that because I feel like it really suits my voice when I do sing it whether that be drunk or on karaoke or something.
“But yeah, I like that kind of thing.”

OHMYGOSSIP — An unreleased version of David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’ is to be released as an NFT to mark the 40th anniversary of the mega-hit.
Songwriter and producer, Larry Dvoskin – who is the songwriting partner of The Beach Boys’ Al Jardine – is releasing his cinematic re-do of the late music icon’s 1983 classic, alongside one-off digital collectibles inspired by Bowie on the blockchain platform Gala Music.
In a statement, Dvoskin declared: “I am first and foremost a huge Bowie fan. It would have been a mistake to attempt to copy the original. This is something different. David simply imagined a more dreamy, electronic version. He is the original disruptor of expectations.”
On Twitter, Dvoskin made people aware that the re-make has not been authorised by Bowie’s estate.
Fans can pay a donation of any amount for the download and money raised will go the Grammys’ MusiCares charity, which has raised millions for health, financial and rehabilitation resources for people in music.
He wrote: “Let’s Dance Friday- After 20 years the unreleased version I produced for David Bowie- is finally going LIVE. It’s NOT coming from The Estate, but from @GoGalaMusic and it’s a “Pay what you want” price. Any amount raised goes to @MusicCares The Grammy org. So Let’s Sway thru the crowd to an empty space! (sic)”
Bowie – who died in January 2016 aged 69 – had emailed Dvoskin back in 2002 about doing the re-recording but never got around to it.
He recalled: “When I first talked with the executor of the Bowie Estate, he told me he initially planned to listen to my pitch about releasing this as an NFT and then politely pass.
“But when he pulled up the original 2002 email in which Bowie expressed his enthusiasm for doing the recording, that changed his mind. This was a creative endeavour David never got to see released during his lifetime. We are honouring his wish by releasing it now.”
The NFTs will be available via music.gala.com “soon”.
The original was co-produced by Nile Rodgers of Chic and featured on the seminal album of the same name.

OHMYGOSSIP — Frankie Goes To Hollywood could reunite for the first time in more than two decades for ‘Eurovision’.
The ‘Power of Love’ hitmakers hail from Liverpool, the host city of the 2023 song contest, and have been approached to play a one-off gig with lead singer Holly Johnson.
A music insider told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column: “Eurovision organisers have put them at the top of their wish list and have asked them if they would consider performing.
“The group haven’t played together with lead singer Holly in more than 20 years, so it would be massive to get them back.
“To host Eurovision in Liverpool is massive for the city and the organisers want to make sure it is one to remember.”
Their 1983 debut hit ‘Relax’ was banned by broadcaster the BBC in 1984 for its sexual references while at number six in the charts and subsequently topped the UK Singles Chart for five consecutive weeks, before going on to earn them a BRIT Award for Best British Single.
The source added: “For the band it would be a monumental moment too.
“’Relax’ got banned by the BBC when it was released and this year marks its 40th anniversary, so to be back performing it on the Beeb would be huge.
“Eurovision are hoping the group says yes but it might not be that simple.”
FGTH – also including Paul Rutherford, Mark O’Toole, Brian Nash and Peter Gill – were last known to be in the same room in 2003 for VH1’s ‘Bands Reunited’, however, they did not perform.
In 2007, Peter, Paul, Mark, and vocalist Ryan Molloy formed Forbidden Hollywood to play their new songs and old FGTH material to avoid legal issues with Holly over use of the band’s name.
The original band split in 1987 after a series of hits.

OHMYGOSSIP — Razorlight are set to rock Audley End House as part of Heritage Live this summer.
The Johnny Borrell-fronted indie legends will play on the grounds of the picturesque English Heritage property in Essex, South East England, on Sunday, August 13.
Support comes from ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’ hitmakers Toploader, plus rockers Embrace and The Feeling.

Last year, ‘America’ group Razorlight revealed they have a new album in the works.
They tweeted alongside new pictures: “Greetings from 2022, here we are in Gloucestershire working hard on Razor album 5.”
Their last studio effort was 2018’s ‘Olympus Sleeping’.
The original line-up – featuring Johnny, Bjorn Agren, Andy Burrows and Carl Dalemo – reunited for the first time in more than a decade in 2021.
Andy told NME last year of being back: “It feels incredible. We’ve spent the past week or two rehearsing. Playing these songs has been an absolute joy. The emotions that were going through me when we started playing ‘America’, I forgot to play the first half of the song – it was totally nuts. It’s been amazing. It’s so powerful playing these old tunes. It’s very very special.”
Johnny added: “I’m really enjoying reconnecting with Andy and Carl, it’s like getting to know people again. I’m enjoying it because you never want to lose friends. It’s a horrible thing to think. It doesn’t really make sense. It definitely feels good to me on a personal level.
“On a creative level – amazing. We’ve been in the studio rehearsing and recording. As soon as the four of us are in the room, it just sounds amazing, straight away.”

OHMYGOSSIP — John Lydon’s PiL will still release their new album ‘End of World’ in August and embark on a lengthy tour as planned following the passing of his wife Nora Forster.
The former Sex Pistol, 67, was left devastated after his other half sadly lost her lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease on April 6, aged 80, but he says she would have wanted him to release the record she loved.
The record is out on August 11, and features the new single ‘Penge’, which he has hailed as “something of a Medieval Viking epic.”
He said: “Nora loved the album, she wouldn’t have wanted us to postpone it or change any of our plans.”
A statement on Twitter on Tuesday (11.04.23) also read: “PiL have decided to continue plans to announce their 11th studio album End of World, following the sad passing of John’s wife Nora Forster. End of World will be released on 11th August followed by a 38-date UK and European Tour.

Public Image Ltd (PiL) is also comprised of Lu Edmonds (multi-instrumentalist, Guitars) Bruce Smith (Percussion, drums), and Scott Firth (Bass, multi-instrumentalist).
PiL recorded an emotional ‘Eurovision’ entry for Ireland called ‘Hawaii’, which is a love letter to Nora, who Lydon was primary carer of up until her passing and was married to for more than five decades.
The punk rock idol said at the time: “It is dedicated to everyone going through tough times on the journey of life, with the person they care for the most.
“It’s also a message of hope that ultimately love conquers all.”
However, they didn’t get chosen to represent the country in the end, with Ireland being represented by Wild Youth and their track ‘We Are One’.
‘Hawaii’ is also featured on the 13-track LP.

OHMYGOSSIP — Kaiser Chiefs have shared their latest single, ‘Jealousy’.
The ‘Ruby’ hitmakers have followed up last year’s ‘How 2 Dance’ with the new catchy earworm from their upcoming eighth studio album.
News of the band’s new song comes with a message from frontman Ricky Wilson admitting that they are no longer afraid of “failure” after having hits and misses over their two decades as a group.
He said in a statement: “We’ve spent the last 20 years making tunes, some have been hits, some have been the opposite of hits.
“As a musician, once all the worry and fear of failure is removed, all that is left is the freedom and fun. It’s the reason we started, so I must give you a warning, once you have heard ‘Jealousy’, you won’t be able to get it out of your head!”
The follow-up to 2019’s ‘Duck’ is set to contain even more songs that swap their signature 00s indie sound for dance-pop.
An album title and the release date are yet to be revealed, though it’s expected to drop before the end of 2023.
Next May will officially mark the 20th anniversary of Kaiser Chiefs’ first single ‘Oh My God’ – from their debut album ‘Employment’ – and the group will celebrate the date, even though Ricky is not a fan of bands living in the past.
The 45-year-old singer recently told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column: “I always thought I wouldn’t want to do that, but yeah we will mark it if that’s what people want.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Leigh-Anne Pinnock could become “a superstar in her own right”.
The 31-year-old singer – who shot to fame as part of Little Mix – is currently working on her debut solo album, and a music insider has suggested that Leigh-Anne could eventually replicate the success of Dua Lipa.
A source told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column: “The music she has been working on is really impressive. Leigh-Anne has every chance to follow in the footsteps of Dua and become a superstar in her own right now.
“She is the full package.”
Jade Thirlwall and Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne’s Little Mix bandmates, are also set to release new music later this year.
However, the girls are keen to avoid any kind of chart war with each other.
In 2022, meanwhile, Leigh-Anne revealed that she was busily working on new material.
The singer promised in a newsletter that she will give fans “as much music as [she] can” when she felt ready.
Leigh-Anne – who has been working with the producer Hit-Boy – said: “I’ve been working really hard on music that’s coming together slowly but surely. I’m so happy with what we’ve made so far but I know there’s much more to do.
“I’ve been so lucky to work with some incredible songwriters, producers and creatives so far and I can’t wait for you to hear what we’ve made.”
Leigh-Anne is keen to share her new music with her fans.
The pop star – who worked as a waitress before she joined Little Mix – explained: “I’ve got some exciting projects I can’t wait to share with you all, and of course, I’ll be giving you as much music as I can as soon as it’s ready.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Metallica’s new album was recorded in socially-distanced studio sessions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The metal band are releasing their new record ‘ 72 Seasons’ this week and drummer Lars Ulrich has opened up about the battle to get the project off the ground in late 2020 after months of lockdowns and restrictions due to the coronavirus outbreak – insisting the sessions gave him a “new sense of appreciation for what we have”.
Lars told NME.com: “At our studio we have cameras set up everywhere, and so when occasionally you see a clip it’s like: ‘Wow, oh yeah, we all had masks on!’ For the first six months of making this record, we had masks on and we were all social distancing in each corner of the studio.
“In the wake of all that, I think we now have a new sense of appreciation for what we have. After the last couple of years I’m feeling pretty grateful about the fact we actually got a record out of it and got through it, and I’m looking forward to getting back out there and playing shows.”
Metallica are preparing to head out on their ‘M72 World Tour’ during which they will play two shows in every city featuring two totally different sets – and Lars admits it sounded like a good idea when they came up with it but now fears it’s a bit daunting.
He added to NME: “It seemed like a really good idea in 27 email chains but now we’re four weeks away from from it, it’s like: ‘Whose idea was this?’
“It’s going around the world for two years and in most cities we’re playing on a Friday and a Sunday. Two completely different sets, no repeat songs. Two different sets of support acts. It’s basically like going to a festival.”
The tour kicks off in Amsterdam on April 27 and 29 and will stop in European cities including Paris, Munich and Madrid as well as American dates in Los Angeles, Chicago and Seattle.

OHMYGOSSIP — Jaymi Hensley has quit Union J because he couldn’t witness the boy band “decay any further”.
The ‘Carry You’ hitmakers – also comprising George Shelley, Josh Cuthbert and JJ Hamblett – reunited last year, three years after they split, but after their tour was cancelled following a reunion show at The London Palladium in May 2022, Jaymi has announced he is departing the band to focus on his solo music.
In a social media statement, Jaymi said: “To all the Union J fans, it is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to say I am no longer continuing on my journey as a member of Union J.
“Since day one, our family of fans has brought me love, light and support and has been the main reason for me being such a driving force within the band. Last year was the best year of my life being back out on stage with the boys and being in front of you all again.”
Expanding on the reason for his exit, he continued: “I hoped and dreamed of all possibilities afterwards, but this has not happened for several reasons, and therefore, out of love and respect to the family of fans and my integrity as an artist, I cannot sit and watch the legacy that I have tried to sustain for a decade decay any further. I will continue to carry artistry, integrity and creativity as my driving force, but now is the time to focus the energy I have consistently put into Union J into myself and create art and music for us all to enjoy together.”
He signed off the letter with his signature: “I truly love you, forever yours.”
Last year, Union J released their third studio album, ‘Ten’, to mark the 10th anniversary of their formation.
The group was originally a trio known as Triple J, before George was added at the request of the judges on ‘The X Factor’.

OHMYGOSSIP — The Mercury Prize with Freenow will take place on September 7.
The prestigious music awards will return to the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith, where one of 12 artists will have their record crowned Album of the Year.
The shortlist for the Albums Of The Year will be announced on July 27.
Last year, Little Simz’ ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’ won the prize.
The 29-year-old rapper and singer said her win left her feeling “humbled”.
She tweeted at the time: “Incredibly grateful and humbled. Mad journey. Thank you for the love, still processing so I don’t have many words but from the bottom of my heart thank you.”
In December, Simz released her follow-up album ‘No Thank You’.
She surprised fans the week before by announcing it would be released on December 12.
The news came only with the deep statement: “Emotion is energy in motion. Honour your truth and feelings. Eradicate fear. Boundaries are important.”
The 10-track LP is produced by Simz’ long-time collaborator, Inflo – who is a member of the R’n’B collective SAULT and penned three songs on Adele’s latest LP ’30’ – and the pair built on the strength of previous releases with this emotionally-charged outing.
Previous recipients include Dave, Wolf Alice, PJ Harvey, James Blake and Arlo Parks.

OHMYGOSSIP — Matty Healy has quit social media to stop himself from being a “f***ing a***hole”.
The outspoken The 1975 frontman, 34, who has been known to go on full-blown rants onstage and online, has vowed to be a “normal bloke” and start a new “era” with his band after deactivating his Instagram page.
Matty is quoted by The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column as saying on stage in Adelaide, Australia, this week: “It’s (coming off social media) because everything happens in eras. The 1975 is a very eras band. The era of me being a f***ing a***hole is coming to an end. I’ve had enough.
“I perform all the time and it’s my job and I love doing this but I can’t perform off the stage anymore as I just want to be a bloke.”
Matty’s own bandmates have had to cut his microphone when he got a bit too outspoken onstage this tour.
The ‘Somebody Else’ singer previously admitted he only felt like he’d “put the bow on [his] adolescence” at the age of 31.
Speaking about the group’s 2020 LP ‘Notes on a Conditional Form’, he said: “I think that I’m kind of putting a bow on my adolescence with this record, really.
“I think that my records have been me as a young man finding my place, and I think that on this record, I kind of found my place.”
Although he’s found himself, the ‘Frail State of Mind’ singer has admitted he longs to have a 9 to 5 job, where he can come home after work and chill on the sofa, because the “rock star” lifestyle isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be.
He confessed: “I’ve struggled with the sacrifice of the domestic existence.
“Everyone craves being a rock star because you’re sat on your sofa, in your job, in your life.
“But trust me, there’s been times where I’m travelling and doing all of the things that look amazing, but the one thing I want to do is watch MasterChef on the sofa, wake up the next day and go to a job where I paint a wall, look at the wall and see a good day’s work that I can quantify.”
Matty – whose parents are ‘Loose Women’ star Denise Welch and ‘Benidorm’ actor Tim Healy – also admitted that growing up in the spotlight and manic touring schedules made it “difficult” for him to mature as quickly as everyone else.
He added to NME: “I’ve done shows five nights a week for years.
“You don’t get an opportunity to know what mood you’re in.
“No matter what mood you’re in, you go on stage, so you get the adrenaline rush, you never know what the f***’s going on.
“I think that I’ve needed to grow, you know?
“I’ve needed to take that final step into understanding the past decade, but I’ve been in the middle of all of that and it’s really difficult to see out.
“I’ve just turned 31 and I think I’m going through a thing that a lot of people go through in, like, their mid-20s, because I haven’t really had the opportunity to do it. I’m just kind of figuring out who I am.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Khalid is set to be honoured with the BMI Champion Award.
The ‘Young, Dumb and Broke’ hitmaker – whose music has been streamed more than 30 million times globally – has been announced as the recipient of the prestigious accolade at the upcoming BMI Pop Awards, which take place on May 9 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in California.
The 25-year-old songwriter is being recognised for his “exceptional artistry and philanthropic efforts which have touched the lives of many.”
BMI’s Vice President Worldwide Creative Barbara Cane commented: “Khalid exemplifies the true spirit of a Champion as one who believes, one who does and one who generously gives back.
“In addition to recognising him for his many creative accomplishments, we’re honouring Khalid for his dedication to charitable causes, community, education, and his commitment to supporting the next generation of songwriters and music makers. We’re looking forward to celebrating our BMI family of award-winning songwriters and publishers with a fantastic night of music.”
The music star – whose full name is Khalid Donnel Robinson – has also given back through The Great Khalid Foundation, which he launched in 2020 to “bridge education, innovation and music.”
Previous recipients of the Champion Award include Mark Ronson and Keith Urban.
The private ceremony will also see the awards for Pop Song of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Publisher of the Year, and BMI’s top 50 most-performed pop songs in the U.S. of the previous year handed out.

OHMYGOSSIP — Guns N’ Roses ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ has been voted the Greatest Guitar Anthem.
A poll carried out by Absolute Radio listeners saw Axl Rose and co’s 1988 classic from the seminal album ‘Appetite for Destruction’ beat the likes of Pink Floyd’s ‘Comfortably Numb’, AC/DC’s ‘Thunderstruck’ and The Eagles’ ‘Hotel California’ to the number one spot.
‘Paradise City’ from the same album also made the top 25, as did AC/DC’s ‘Back in Black’.
Presenter Sarah Champion commented: “From the iconic opening bars, you know this is a song which is going to take you on a journey. With Axl Rose’s unmistakable vocals added in, Sweet Child O’Mine is an anthem which is a timeless rock classic and a worthy winner of the Greatest Guitar Anthem poll”.
