The Darkness bassist says band have ‘complex dynamic’

OHMYGOSSIP — The Darkness have “quite a complex dynamic” among its lineup.
The ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’ rockers – made up of brothers Justin and Dan Hawkins, Frankie Poullain and Rufus Taylor – are still going strong as they celebrate 20 years since the release of their iconic debut album ‘Permission To Land’, and bassist Frankie has insisted he has never “wanted” his role in the band to change.
He told Guitar World magazine: “I haven’t wanted it to change. We have quite a complex dynamic within the band, but it’s not what people think.
“The limelight is always on Dan and Justin, but I kind of savour it.
“We’re always learning from each other. Most of the time it’s hidden behind humour, but humans are complex, aren’t they?”
Frankie admitted he doesn’t “remember much” of the group’s early days besides “strange little moments and observations”.
However, he said: “There was an unraveling at one point, and it was at a time when we really should have been enjoying it the most.
“We were receiving awards and accolades, but it gets tedious, you know? That’s what most people who’ve been through the same experience conclude.
“It’s not really about the awards. It’s more about the process and the struggle that comes before all of that.”
The ‘Heart Explodes’ hitmakers – who won three Brit Awards and an Ivor Novello at the peak of their success – split in 2006 after the release of second album ‘One Way Ticket To Hell… And Back’ but later reformed in 2011.
Reflecting on the reward they get at this stage of their careers, Frankie added: “We get rewarded every night when we’re out on the road. The fans are right in our faces and screaming!
“The point I’m making is that we’re already extremely fortunate. We don’t really need award ceremonies and all that kind of stuff.”

Bring Me The Horizon and Yungblud announce new collaboration

OHMYGOSSIP — Bring Me The Horizon and Yungblud have joined forces again on the new song ‘Happier’.
Oli Sykes and co previously teamed up with the 26-year-old star – whose real name is Dominic Harrison – on the 2020 track ‘Obey’ from BMTH’s EP ‘Post Human: Survival Horror’.
The new tune will arrive at 6pm BST on Tuesday (17.10.23) and get its first spin on BBC Radio 1.
Yungblud previously gushed over Oli’s influence as a makeup-wearing teenager in the north of England and how the frontman “saved [his] life”.
He told NME: “He literally redefined my perception of growing up in wearing makeup and being different in the north. He basically saved my life.”
Oli, 36, admitted he wished he had Yungblud’s outgoing personality.
He said: “He’s [Yungblud] the kind of artist that rock needs – the kind of rockstar that changes a scene. I love him; he lights up a room. He’s the polar opposite to me. I wish I could have that confidence that he has. It’s infectious and that’s why a lot of kids look up to him.”
The ‘DArkSide’ star went on to praise the ‘Fleabag’ rocker for being the only artist since the late David Bowie to be “unashamedly and genuinely themselves”.
He added: “Not since Bowie have we had people who are just so unashamedly and genuinely themselves and don’t give f*** or play by the rules.
“Even Yungblud was like, ‘Doing a song together is so good for the scene’. It doesn’t matter if you’ve got the best band in the world, because if that’s the only one, then that scene dies… You can count on two hands the prominent rock bands that aren’t legacy acts or indie/pop bands like The 1975.”

Noel Gallagher: Liam is trying to rewrite history, Oasis final year was dreadful

OHMYGOSSIP — Noel Gallagher has accused his arch-nemesis sibling Liam Gallagher of trying to “rewrite” Oasis’ history.
The brothers have been estranged ever since a furious bust-up between the pair at their last concert in Paris in 2009, which resulted in the demise of the legendary Britpop group.
Frontman Liam, 51, has just announced the ‘Definitely Maybe’ 30th anniversary tour, sans Noel, with guitarist Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs, the only other member joining the jaunt next June, and he’s repeatedly said he’s keen to reunite with his brother.
However, Noel, 55, is not wholly convinced his sibling really wants a reunion and has admitted it was a “dreadful” final year for the ‘Live Forever’ rockers and he didn’t want to waste his life being “unhappy”.
Noel is quoted by the Daily Star newspaper’s Wired column as saying: “The last tour was not happy. The other fella is trying to rewrite history that it was all f****** great. It wasn’t.
“It was a f****** dreadful last year of Oasis.
“You get one shot at life. Why be unhappy? Whether it be in your personal or professional life, why?
“You’re just wasting a precious thing.”
Noel recently insisted it’s up to his brother to make peace – even calling him a “coward” and insisting he’ll never make the call to reunite Oasis.
Speaking on talkSPORT radio, Noel explained: “Well, I put it out there. [Liam] won’t call … I mean, he should call me, because he’s like, he’s forever going on about it. You’d have thought by now, he’d have some kind of plan.
“He doesn’t have to speak to me. He won’t speak to me, he’s a coward. So he should get some of his people, his agent, to call my people and say: ‘Look, this is what we’re thinking.’ And then we’ll have a conversation about it. Until then, he’s being a little bit disingenuous.”
However, Liam later responded to Noel’s comments in a post on Twitter, ranting: “He’s full of s*** he HATES Oasis fans [but] doesn’t mind them buying his records.”

Ronnie Wood eyes Rolling Stones Glasto return in 2024 or 2025

OHMYGOSSIP — Ronnie Wood would love to see The Rolling Stones headline Glastonbury next year.
The ‘Start Me Up’ group – who have reunited for their first studio album comprising new material in 18 years, ‘Hackney Diamonds’ – made their Glastonbury debut back in 2013, and the bassist would like them to get back to Worthy Farm in 2024 or 2025, and if not, he would settle for a reunion with his old band the Faces at the world-famous festival.
He told NME: “Me, I’d love it. I think it’s a must. If not next year, then… If not the Stones, then the Faces. It’ll be me, Rod [Stewart] and [drummer] Kenney [Jones]. That’s not out of the question, you know. I know they want to do it…”
Ronnie, 76, admits he doesn’t get to many gigs himself these days, though he’s heard good things about The 1975 and Arctic Monkeys.
He said: “I haven’t seen many live bands for a long time. Lots of people tell me about The 1975. I know Arctic Monkeys play a lot. They’re always at Glastonbury. There’s a lot of music to be grabbed out there and I just hope more people play live like we do.”
‘Hackney Diamonds’ – which arrives on October 20 – features the likes of Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, and former rival Sir Paul McCartney, 81, on the track ‘Bite My Head Off’, and Ronnie let slip that the former Beatle is on another song that had to be cut from the record but will be released at some point.
He said of teaming up with the ‘Let it Be’ hitmaker: “The school boy! He was so happy. He actually played on two tracks, one which we’ve got up our sleeve for, you know, more music to come because we cut about 23 songs and we only picked the first 12.”
Ronnie would love for the Stones to play the entire album live, but frontman Sir Mick Jagger, 80, and guitarist Keith Richards, 79, won’t allow it.
Asked how many of the new songs will make their setlist, he replied: “That’s the next thing. Next week, we’re going to see how they translate live. I have complete faith. We could play the whole album, you know what I mean? But [Mick and Keith] will go, ‘Oh no Ron, that’s so ambitious.’ We’re not gonna forget the back catalogue. There are certain songs, ‘Paint It, Black’ and ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’, that have got to be played. We’re only making room for, say, three or five songs.”

Johnny Marr stopped drinking after kind Noel Gallagher gesture

OHMYGOSSIP — Johnny Marr admits he “quit” booze after he happily agreed to replace a smashed-up guitar he kindly gave Noel Gallagher.
The Smiths rocker gifted the Gibson Les Paul Custom to the Oasis star before the Britpop group blew up in the mid-90s as he struggled to afford his own instruments, and he famously used it to defend his brother, frontman Liam Gallagher, when a stage invader tried to attack him at a gig in Newcastle.
Generous Johnny had also given Suede’s Bernard Butler another Gibson guitar.
He told The Guardian: “It’s just to be nice. As simple as that. Bernard is a good friend and I knew he’d love that guitar. And me giving Noel those guitars has become such a big story over the years, but people don’t realise that at the time he wasn’t who he is now.
“He was just a kid from Burnage. I had no idea Oasis were going to go on to such big things. I did it because he was in need, because I was lucky and had lots of guitars, and because I wished someone had done it for me.”
However, he has admitted he was far too kind when he agreed to give Noel a replacement whilst hungover and it was from then on, he decided to ditch alcohol.
Johnny – who often gets mistaken for Noel – added: “I must confess it’s why I quit drinking. I wasn’t drunk, but the chances are I was very hungover when I agreed to that.”
The pair have remained close pals and have worked together over the years.
Johnny continues to give back and teamed up with the Salford Foundation Trust to offer under 25s the chance to receive financial support to boost their music career last year.
The Mancunian said: “It’s a privilege to make a contribution to the creative development of young people. The Salford Foundation Trust is a great example of positive local action that makes a difference. It’s an honour to be involved.”

Ariana Grande starts new album with Max Martin

OHMYGOSSIP — Ariana Grande has reportedly started work on a new album.
The ‘Thank U, Next’ hitmaker has been in the studio with producer Max Martin working on her follow-up to 2020’s ‘Positions’.
The pop star has been focusing on filming the two-part ‘Wicked’ film in London, but amid the SAG-AFTRA strike when filming was paused, she managed to fit in some time for music.
An insider told The New York Post’s Page Six column: “Her priority has been Glinda [her character in ‘Wicked’] for the past two years, and still is, as they haven’t finished the film.”
She still has no idea when the new music will be released.
The source said: “She doesn’t know when she’ll want to release” it “as she wants to be respectful of the timeline for ‘Wicked,’ and originally didn’t want to do any music at all until after the films were released.”
However, the insider added: “She works quickly and drops [in] instinctively whenever she feels ready… so who knows?”
At the weekend, Ariana was asked if she had a title for her next studio outing, to which she replied: “Let me make it first!”
Earlier this year, the 30-year-old singer responded after a batch of unheard material leaked online and admitted it’s “impossible to keep things” from her passionate fanbase.
In a R.E.M. Beauty video, she said: “You guys have heard every bad song and b******* demo that I’ve ever made. Hilarious.
“It’s impossible to keep things from you. You gotta take some swings and misses.”
Later in the video, the ‘7 Rings’ hitmaker was asked if there were “any secrets soon to come”.
She replied: “Hmm… no secrets. I’m all out of secrets. You’ve stolen all my unreleased music, it’s horrible [laughs].”
Back in February, Ariana made her return to music on The Weeknd’s ‘Die For You’ remix as she teamed up with her friend and collaborator on the new version of his 2016 track from the album ‘Starboy’.
The ‘Dangerous Woman’ singer previously reassured fans she is still very much a singer and reminded them of her vocal prowess on a rendition of ‘Over the Rainbow’ from 1939 classic ‘The Wizard of Oz’.
After being asked by a TikTok user why she is no longer a singer, she replied: “Literally on set filming two musical movies all day every day.”
Ariana split from her husband Dalton Gomez in January after two years of marriage and she has since been dating Broadway star Ethan Slater, 31, who she has been working with on ‘Wicked’.

James Arthur puffed ‘ungodly amount of weed’ and boozed to get through anxiety while on ‘X Factor’

OHMYGOSSIP — James Arthur smoked an “ungodly amount of weed” when he was on ‘The X Factor’.
The 35-year-old singer show to fame after winning the ITV singing show in 2012 and has now admitted he turned to drugs throughout the process to cope with his overwhelming anxiety.
He was quoted in the Daily Star saying: “I smoked an ungodly amount of weed, I smoked weed every day for like 10 years.
“A lot of weed, a lot of weed, the paranoia made it worse, and yeah drinking and stuff like that.”
The singer was hit by his first severe panic attack during filming of ‘The X Factor’ that was so severe medics were called.
James – who was living in a bedsit after being homeless at the time he landed a spot on Simon Cowell’s show – added: “It was my first major panic attack where ambulances were called and I thought I was dying and all that kind of s***.
“It was all a bit much, it was the contrast from bedsit to national TV, it was at the peak of its powers when I was on that show, like 12 million people a week were watching.”
Despite winning ‘The X Factor’, James slumped back into depression after he was dropped by Simon’s Syco record label a couple of years later.
He said on the ‘Private Parts’ podcast: “I did not want to be here at all. Because the thing that I worked towards my whole life seemingly was gone and there was zero chance of it coming back, one in a million chance of it coming back.”
James also confessed if he had not found a new record deal he “probably wouldn’t be here” today.
He is now due to release his new album ‘Bitter Sweet Love’ in January.
James also recently revealed on Heart Radio he was rushed to hospital in agony with a kidney stone after the Pride of Britain awards earlier this month, which were so severe he was booked in for an operation to remove them.

Liam Gallagher and John Squire to release joint album next year

OHMYGOSSIP — Liam Gallagher is reportedly set to release a joint album with The Stone Roses’ John Squire next year.
The former Oasis frontman previously hinted at forming a supergroup with the guitarist after he surprised fans by bringing him out for his pair of Knebworth shows last June, to perform the Britpop group’s 1995 classic ‘Champagne Supernova’.
And now it’s been claimed the pair hit it off so much in the studio, that they are set to release an album next year and could potentially schedule some gigs around the release.
An insider told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column: “Liam and John have been friends for years but things really started to take shape following his sell-out gigs at Knebworth last summer.
“Initially they just wanted to get into the studio together and see how things panned out.
“The sessions went so well that they are now set to release an album next year.
“There has been talk of doing a handful of live shows as well around the release, but nothing is set in stone with that.”
Liam had originally hinted on Twitter (before it became X): “Super group incoming LG JS. (sic)”
And speaking to Matt Wilkinson on Apple Music 1 for the ‘Home Sessions’ series, the ‘Diamond In The Dark’ singer confirmed the pair were going to work together at “some point” and he’s hoping to sing on some tunes for him.
He said: “Yeah. Serious, man. But we’ve got things to do first, and he’s got things to clear up and that. But yeah, I’m definitely going to do summat at some point.”
Matt asked: “So you’ve actually had the conversation a little bit?”
Liam – whose return to Knebworth Park in Hertfordshire came 26 years after Oasis famously played to a record-breaking 250,000 fans over two nights at the outdoor venue – replied: “Maybe, yeah. Probably did that at Knebworth and that, I think, if I can remember anything about it.
But, no. There’s talk about summat. Maybe. But no rush. He’s my man, I love him. So if he’s got any tunes that need singing, I’m the boy, mate. (sic)”
A few years ago, Liam said his dream supergroup would include someone out of The Stone Roses and his close friend, Richard Ashcroft, formerly of The Verve.
In 2017, he said: “The ideal ones would be the guys out of The Stone Roses. I think they just split up, so that would be good.
“[Richard] Ashcroft would be good. There’s a lot of people out there, but the majority of them are all doing their own thing.
“But, if they want to do one, give us a shout. I’ll do it.”

Sir Mick Jagger calls Beatles ‘ just a cover band’

OHMYGOSSIP — Sir Mick Jagger has branded the Beatles “just a blues cover band”.
The Rolling Stones frontman made the remark after Sir Paul McCartney made a similar comment about Jagger’s group – but Jagger is adamant almost every famous band will have started off playing cover tracks in the early days of their careers.
In an interview with The Times newspaper, Jagger explained: “He said the Beatles were better than the Stones because the Stones were really just a blues cover band. Well, the Beatles were also really just a blues cover band when they started out. Every band is a cover band at the beginning, because that’s how it goes.”
McCartney previously insisted the Beatles were better during an interview with shock jock Howard Stern in 2020. He said: “[The Stones] are rooted in the blues. When they are writing stuff, it has to do with the blues. We had a little more influences. There’s a lot of differences, and I love the Stones, but I’m with you. The Beatles were better.”
It comes after McCartney opened up about the Beatles recording sessions – insisting Yoko Ono’s presence was an “interference in the workplace”.
The 81-year-old musician admitted bringing John Lennon’s decision to bring his partner to the studio effected the dynamic of the group, but the bandmembers didn’t confront their pal and instead “bottled it up” and got on with the job.
Speaking on new podcast series ‘McCartney: A Life In Lyrics’, Paul explained: “John and Yoko had got together and that was bound to have an effect on the dynamics of the group.
“Things like Yoko being literally in the middle of the recording session [were] something you had to deal with. The idea was that if John wanted this to happen, then it should happen. There’s no reason why not.”
He added: “Anything that disturbs us, is disturbing. We would allow this and not make a fuss. And yet at the same time, I don’t think any of us particularly liked it.
“It was an interference in the workplace. We had a way we worked. The four of us worked with George Martin. And that was basically it. And we’d always done it like that. So not being very confrontational, I think we just bottled it up and just got on with it.”
John and Yoko met in 1966 and they went on to marry in 1969. They remained together until his death in 1980.
In a previous interview with Rolling Stone magazine in 2016, Paul revealed Yoko’s presence at the studio was different because she didn’t stay in the control room – instead she was sitting among the bandmembers in the studio while they were working.
He explained: “We handled it, but not amazingly well, because we were so tight. We weren’t sexist, but girls didn’t come to the studio – they tended to leave us to it. When John got with Yoko, she wasn’t in the control room or to the side. It was in the middle of the four of us.”

Troye Sivan reveals how Janet Jackson inspired his latest album

OHMYGOSSIP — Troye Sivan has revealed how Janet Jackson’s ‘Together Again’ “changed the trajectory” of his music.
The ‘Rush’ hitmaker has explained how he wanted the songs on his latest album ‘Something to Give Each Other’ to ooze warmth and joy like his idol’s 1977 classic.
Speaking on Billboard’s ‘Pop Shop’ podcast, he said: “I talk a lot about Janet Jackson because she’s so important to me, but I saw her show at the Hollywood Bowl really early on in the process. And, to me, it took me right back to when was I was like, however old I was, I was probably like seven … hearing ‘Together Again’ for the first time. And that melody and those chords and the warmth that’s in that song literally changed the trajectory of my life. The trajectory of my life as a musician and as a songwriter, specifically. And that’s something that I was really really striving for [on the new album]. I wanted something warm.”
The 28-year-old pop star also revealed he had to really push his team to agree to make the music video “of his dreams” for lead single ‘Rush’ after being told the promotional format is “dead”.
He shared: “First things first, considering all of my references for a good pop star growing up, were those who made these mega mega mega videos where the budgets were very very different from what they are now. I had so many times, in so many meetings (where people said), like ‘music videos don’t matter, the music video is dead,’ and I pushed and pushed and pushed and I’m so grateful that we go to make the music video of my dreams for ‘Rush’ … It went wider than I think anything ever has of mine before, and that’s really cool. I’m very grateful and thankful.”

‘It’s honestly been so disheartening’: Charli XCX addresses backlash over collaborating with Sam Smith

OHMYGOSSIP — Charli XCX has praised Sam Smith for being able to “withstand” the hateful comments they have faced online since the pair announced their collaboration.
The ‘Speed Drive’ hitmaker and the ‘Unholy’ star recently announced they are releasing the song ‘In The City’ this week, and days before the track’s release, Charli has addressed the backlash she has faced for teaming up with the star after her Instagram comments section was left with calls for her to release a solo version of the song.
Addressing the negative comments Sam has received online, Charli shared in a TikTok on Tuesday (17.10.23): “I’m about to release a song with Sam Smith, and the experience so far has been really interesting, because never in my life, have I seen somebody receive so many hateful comments online.
“It’s honestly been really disheartening, but at the same time, I’m so proud of Sam’s ability to withstand that, because I know that I certainly couldn’t withstand it.
“So I just want to say, Sam, I love you and I love our song together, and I am in awe of your strength.”
Sam is often trolled for their fashion choices and body shape and their ‘Unholy’ collaborator Kim Petras also previously praised the way they handle the nastiness.
The pop stars hit the headlines after their Grammys and BRIT Awards performances earlier this year when the pair caused a stir with their hell-themed rendition of the hit.
It led to Sam being mocked for their appearance, but Kim said the ‘I’m Not Here To Make Friends’ singer takes it all on the chin and has shown her how to deal with negativity.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Kim said: “It was an incredible journey truly, I had so much fun with Sam and I think we together felt very strong on stage and gave each other lots of confidence.
“I feel like I’ve learned a lot from Sam regarding how to handle media and people commenting on your appearance, looks, your body. People were really harsh to Sam but I was very impressed to see how Sam handled all of that and didn’t let it get close.
“It’s so tough sometimes, you go through comments or press stuff and you’re like, oh my God everyone hates me. But give it a few hours, touch grass and breathe and let it go by.”

Mark Hoppus ‘learned to play bass again’ after tough cancer battle

OHMYGOSSIP — Mark Hoppus had to learn “how to play bass again” after his cancer battle.
The Blink-182 rocker was diagnosed with stage 4-A diffuse large B-Cell lymphoma in 2021 and after undergoing chemotherapy he was declared cancer-free six months later.
Reflecting on his recovery, he told Zane Lowe for Apple Music: “Healing through the band, once I was clear of the cancer diagnosis and got the all clear, I was still a f****** hollow, just shell.
“S*****, weak brain eaten with the chemotherapy and pain and everything else. And then getting back in the studio to make this record was like learning how to play bass again, learning how to… the chemotherapy wrecked my vocal cords.
“I had to go to work with a vocal coach. I had to rebuild my throat.
“I had all this stuff had to rebuild to get to the point where we could go and walk on stage at Coachella and have one of the biggest shows of our career and have this album, which touch wood is one of the best albums we’ve ever written.”
The group – completed by drummer Travis Baker and returning guitarist and singer Tom DeLonge – are poised to release new album ‘One More Time…’, and it comes after the idea of having the three of them back together seemed impossible.
Mark admitted: “I didn’t know that Blink would ever get back together or that I would ever share a stage with Tom.
“And I told management, I told Travis [Barker], I told everybody, I’m like, ‘I’m not setting foot on stage again with that dude. Not a chance.’ That’s the truth.
“But I’ve always thought Tom was one of the best songwriters in the world and one of my favourite songwriters, but there was a lot of bad blood and there was a lot of stuff in the press and feelings and all this stuff.”
Tom was there to support him during his cancer battle, which helped mend their friendship as they then focused on reuniting the classic lineup.
He previously revealed how Mark’s diagnosis inspired him to re-join Blink in 2022, after he departed the group in 2015 and was replaced by Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba.
Tom said: “I remember telling my wife, ‘I don’t think I’m ever going to play music again, I don’t think I’m ever gonna tour again.’
“Until Mark told me he was sick, and then I was like, that’s the only thing I wanted to do.”

Madonna ‘in advanced talks to headline next year’s Glastonbury!’

OHMYGOSSIP — Madonna is reportedly in “advanced talks” to headline next year’s Glastonbury festival.
The Queen of Pop, 65, who kicked off her delayed ‘Celebration’ world tour earlier this month in London, has never performed at the event on Worthy Farm near Somerset, south-west England and sources say her team are planning what would be one of its biggest-ever performances.
A music insider told The Sun: “Negotiations are well underway between Glasto organiser Emily Eavis and Madonna’s manager Guy Oseary.
“Both teams are keen to make it happen and striking a deal shouldn’t be a problem.
“Emily was blown away watching Madonna perform in London and is desperate to get her on the Pyramid Stage next year.”
Madonna’s ‘Celebration’ shows in London were sold out, and after watching one of her dates at London’s O2 Arena, Emily, 44, said on social media: “She’s back! Incredible.”
Madonna’s headline appearance would be a blow to those who criticised Emily for filling this year’s Glastonbury line-up with male acts, including Sir Elton John, the Arctic Monkeys and Guns N’ Roses.
She defended the bill by saying: “We did have a female headliner, and she unfortunately had to pull out… it changes all the time.
“But next year it’s looking like we’ve got two female headliners, so fingers crossed.”
The Sun reported Taylor Swift, 33, was the female act who pulled out of the festival.
Glastonbury 2024 is set to take place from 26 to 30 June, with tickets going on sale next month.
Madonna – who was forced to delay her new world tour after being hospitalised in the summer with a “serious bacterial infection” – is set to wrap up her 78-show tour next April, which would leave plenty of time for her to rest and prepare for a slot on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage.
