James Ivory says coming out didn’t feel ‘all that important’ at height of fame

OHMYGOSSIP — James Ivory says coming out didn’t seem “all that important” when he was at the height of his filmmaking glory.
The Oscar-winning gay icon, 96, made more than 20 much-loved movies including ‘The Remains of the Day’ with his late romantic and producing partner Ismail Merchant, who died in 2005 aged 68 following surgery for abdominal ulcers.
He told People about the concept of being out of the closet in Hollywood as a “gay filmmaker” being a modern concept at the peak of their success: “It’s kind of a new idea. When (Ismail and I) were making all those films – and, you know, we made over 20 features together – that was not something that seemed all that important.
The success of James and Ismail’s Ivory Productions is chronicled in director Stephen Soucy’s new documentary ‘Merchant Ivory’.
James added when he was making films such as ‘A Room with a View’ and ‘Howards End’ he and his partner were more focused on the work than talking about their sexuality.
Their careers saw them work with a raft of top talent including Sir Anthony Hopkins, Dame Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter, Vanessa Redgrave and more.
James said he and Ismail always focused on “what we were doing and how we were doing it, the kinds of stories that we chose to tell and the kinds of actors that we wanted to have”.
Most of the filmmaking pair’s fans weren’t even aware they were gay until recently.
The awareness is mainly down to the success of gay coming-of-age drama ‘Call Me by Your Name’ that James made in 2017, and which starred Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer.
In interviews to promote the movie, James said being openly gay during the production of his classic films in the 1980s and ’90s classics would have been “unthinkable”.
He also told The Guardian in 2018 his and Ismail’s privacy regarding their sexuality was a way to protect his partner, adding: “That is not something that an Indian Muslim would ever say publicly or in print. Ever!
“You have to remember that Ismail was an Indian citizen living in Bombay, with a deeply conservative Muslim family there.
“It’s not the sort of thing he was going to broadcast. Since we were so close and lived most of our lives together, I wasn’t about to undermine him.”

Claire Danes had real teenage existence ‘articulated’ by ‘My So-Called Life’

OHMYGOSSIP — Claire Danes had her real teenage existence “articulated” by ‘My So-Called Life’.
The actress, 45, fond fame starring as Angela in the teen drama, which ran on ABC from 25 August, 1994, to 26 January, 1995, with the show headed for a 30th anniversary celebration next year.
She told People about how the writing was a reflection of what she was going through as she grew up while shooting the popular series: “I was exactly Angela’s age, maybe even a slight bit younger, but I don’t think I had ever read a more accurate account of the experience that I was having at that moment.
“I was just so thrilled to have my internal life articulated for me.
“It’s just an astonishing piece of writing, and I don’t quite know how (series creator) Winnie (Holzman) did that, how she time travelled as thoroughly as she did, and re-entered her 14-year-old self, or some version of that.
“It was very intuitive, and I didn’t have to reach very far. There was no sensory exercise that I had to perform. It was all immediately available to me.”
‘My So-Called Life’ told of Angela and her family and friends as they navigated high school and life in a fictional suburb.
It spotlighted controversial themes such as teen sex, guns in school and drug and alcohol use.
Claire added about the strict rules surrounding her work on the show as a teen actress: “I was only able to work 10 hours a day, because I was a minor, and three of those hours had to be in my trailer with my tutor.
“So every second spent on that set was really precious, but it was great. It was just an amazing introduction to television and film.”
She added about her love of the show’s co-star’s and crew: “I feel very blessed that that was my entry point and that I was working with such gifted, creatively ambitious, and also very thoughtful, caring, sane, nurturing people.
“It was a really good group, and we’re all still very close, which is amazing. It’s wonderful.”
‘My So-Called Life’ only lasted one season but still has a cult following among its loyal fan base, and also starred Jared Leto, AJ Langer, Wilson Cruz, Devon Odessa and others.

Brad Pitt and girlfriend Ines de Ramon ‘have been holidaying at his French winery’

OHMYGOSSIP — Brad Pitt and his girlfriend Ines de Ramon have reportedly been holidaying in the grounds of his French winery.
The 60-year-old ‘Fight Club’ actor was first romantically linked to the jewellery designer, 34, in 2022, three years after his divorce from Angelina Jolie, 49, with whom he has been embroiled in a long legal battle over how she sold her share in the Château Miraval vineyard where they got married.
A source has now told Page Six Brad has been “getting in plenty of quality time” with Ines at the French retreat.
The insider added: “He is living his life. Angelina has already done the worst thing she can do, which is separating the kids from their father.”
Brad claims he gave his ex Angelina half the winery as a wedding gift, with the condition that if she ever wanted to sell it she had to offer it to him first.
But the ‘Maleficent’ actress sold her share to a third party and Brad claims it was a breach of the deal.
He and Angelina have also been caught in a custody battle over the six children they have together – Maddox, 22, Pax, 20, Zahara, 19, Shiloh, 18, and 15-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.
The former couple’s divorce is still pending, but they are both legally single.
Page Six reported their relationship is “so acrimonious” organisers of the Venice Film Festival, where both had films running, spaced out the premieres so there would be no run-ins between the warring pair.
Ines was previously married to ‘Vampire Diaries’ actor Paul Wesley, 42, for four years from 2019 until 2023.

Jude Law admits new film about white supremacist group is ‘sadly’ relevant

OHMYGOSSIP — Jude Law has admitted his new film about a white supremacist group is “sadly” relevant.
The 51-year-old actor is promoting his latest movie ‘The Order’ at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, with the project competing for the prestigious Golden Lion.
Jude said during a press conference in Venice about the film, which centres around a white supremacist mob: “Sadly, the relevance speaks for itself. It felt like a piece of work that needed to be made now.
“It’s always interesting finding a piece from the past that has some relevant relationship to the present day.”
Jude’s fellow cast member Nicholas Hoult, 34, added about the importance of the movie: “Hopefully the film, perhaps, if people see it, can shed more light on how these sorts of events occur and on the people that are instigating them, (and can) help prevent it happening anymore in the future.”
‘The Order’ is an adaptation of the 1989 non-fiction book ‘The Silent Brotherhood’ by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt, which tells the story of a string of increasingly violent bank robberies as well as counterfeiting operations and armoured car heists that terrify frightens communities throughout the Pacific Northwest in 1983.
A synopsis of the book says: “As baffled law enforcement agents scrambled for answers, a lone FBI agent, stationed in the sleepy, picturesque town of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, comes to believe the crimes are not the work of traditional, financially motivated criminals, but of a group of dangerous domestic terrorists, inspired by a radical, charismatic leader, plotting a devastating war against the federal government of the United States.”
Jude also told Deadline the film was “political and delicate” as well as controversial, but said it was vital for art to got to “those dark places and approach dark subject matter with a very level head and a non-judgemental perspective”.

He shared an image that showed various photographs and newspaper clippings focusing on Diana – including an article about her christening and a snap of the late royal playing outside as a young girl.
But Charles refrained from including a caption on the moving post.
He is the youngest of five children born to John Spencer and Frances Shand Kydd.
Charles grew up with his three older sisters – Sarah, the eldest, born in 1955, followed by Jane in 1957 and Diana in 1961.
He also had an older brother named John, who was born in 1960 but died just hours later.
Charles admitted after Diana’s death he was haunted by the feeling he could have done more to save her from her tragic end.
He told People: “You always think, God, I wish I could’ve protected her. It was just… it was devastating.
“I always felt intensely protective towards her.”
Charles famously gave the eulogy at Diana’s funeral on 6 September, 1997, at which Sir Elton John, 77, sang his now iconic version of ‘Candle in the Wind’.
He said he was acting as the “representative” of a “family in grief, in a country in mourning, before a world in shock”, before hailing Diana as the “very essence” of compassion, duty, style and beauty – and saying she was the “most hunted person of the modern age”.
Along with Charles’ online tribute, thousands of tourists and royal fans laid flowers and photos of Diana on Saturday at the gates of her former residence Kensington palace.

The mother-of-three ‘Titanic’ actress, 48, who is married to husband Ned Rocknroll, 46, since 2012, said she has developed a more carefree attitude to her body since playing pioneering war photographer Lee Miller in her 2023 film ‘Lee’.
She told the Daily Telegraph: “In many ways I felt more similar to her than almost any character I’ve played before.
“There’s so much of how she lived her life that I profoundly connected with, but was also inspired by.
“Everything was on her own terms. Even how she celebrated her physical self.”
Kate, who recently spoke about how she ignored a crew member’s suggestion that she might want to sit up straight in order to disguise her rolls of stomach flesh, added: “Stupid things you might consider as a woman – well, playing Lee made me think, I don’t give a f*** about any of that.
“I mean I literally don’t give a s***. I don’t care. I would take all my clothes off in front of you right now. I just don’t believe in hiding the truth, actually.”

Noel Gallagher jokes he fell out with brother Liam as he stole his teddy bear in 1970s

OHMYGOSSIP — Noel Gallagher has joked he fell out with his brother Liam as he stole his teddy bear decades ago.
The ‘Wonderwall’ songwriter, 57, made the claim on Saturday (31.08.24) after he and Liam announced Oasis would be reforming for a series of comeback gigs in 2025 – and as fans waited in online queues for hours to buy up tickets for the shows.
He was in London store Stone Island when he was approached by a father and his children who then started to grill Noel on why he and Liam fought so much before their infamous 2009 bust-up in Paris led to the band breaking up.
A clip of the interaction posted to X by Steve Sheward shows him explaining who Noel was to his kids.
He is heard saying: “This is Noel, that… this is dad’s legendary band.”
His daughter then asks: “Wait, is he getting back with his brother?” – before one of the fan’s sons asks Noel: “Why did you fall out with your brother?”
Noel laughed as he replied: “Why did I fall out with him?”
When he noticed one of the kids was clutching a soft Winnie-the-Pooh toy, the rocker added: “’Cause he stole my teddy bear. I’m not lying. He stole it. 1978.”
The boy holding the stuffed bear then tells Noel: “You’re fake, see you” – leaving the musician and the fan laughing.
Liam, 51, has previously said he believes Noel harboured hatred for him for years after he drunkenly peed on his stereo equipment when they were growing up in Manchester.
Oasis announced on Tuesday (27.08.24) they were reforming for a string of stadium concerts – 15 years after the Gallagher brothers famously broke up after a backstage argument at Paris’ Rock en Seine festival.
The brothers said in a statement about their comeback: “The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised.”
They added in an Instagram post about their reunion: “This is it, this is happening.”

Princess Diana’s ex-royal bodyguard insists she would have eventually ‘accepted’ Charles’ relationship with Camilla

OHMYGOSSIP — Princess Diana’s former royal bodyguard has said she would have eventually “accepted” Charles’ relationship with Camilla if she was still alive.
The mother-of-two was guarded for years by former Scotland Yard officer Ken Wharfe, and he has now spoken out about how he thinks she would have come to terms with her ex-husband marrying now-Queen Camilla as thousands of royal fans flocked to her former residence of Kensington Palace in London to lay flowers outside on the 27th anniversary of her death.
Ken told The Sun: “Part of Diana’s problem was that she naïvely believed that the relationship with Camilla would fade away.
“But let’s be honest, Camilla was there from day one. Camilla from my time, I went there in the mid-1980s, was very much the discussion at the time.
“And (with) Diana’s openness – she felt it necessary to give me the complete low down of the relationship.
“I questioned that at the time, but actually having listened to her, it made me understand Diana a lot better.
“And she naïvely believed that it would end. There is no doubt in my mind that Diana did love Charles. I mean, she said that to me repeatedly.”
Diana, who was killed aged 36 in a Paris car crash on 31 August, 1997 – five years after she and then-Prince Charles split, before they finalised their divorce in 1996.
Two years after Diana was killed in a horror car crash Camilla and Charles publicly revealed their relationship.
Diana famously told of their affair in her TV interview with journalist Martin Bashir, saying: “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”
Ken added if Diana not been killed, she and Charles wouldn’t have restarted their relationship at any point.
But he says about how he is convinced she would have accepted it: “From my own experience in life, you move on and you change, you mellow slightly, and you deal with situations in a much calmer way.
“And I’m sure Diana would have done that. She was very good at that.
“Time, as everyone says, is a great healer. Diana was angry with the Prince of Wales, angry with her circumstances, angry with Camilla, angry with everybody.
“But you know you know, things heal. And as time progressed, she would have been in her 60s now, she would have accepted.”

Adele preparing for ‘incredibly long’ break

OHMYGOSSIP — Adele has warned fans she will be away for an “incredibly long time” after she concludes her Las Vegas residency.
The ‘Easy On Me’ hitmaker has 10 dates to complete of her ‘Weekends with Adele’ series at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, and once she exits the stage on November 23, she will be embarking on a long hiatus.
In a TikTok clip, she told the crowd at her final date of her Germany residency in Munich on Saturday (31.08.24): “I have 10 shows to do, but after that I will not see you for an incredibly long time.
“And I will hold you dear in my heart.”
The 36-year-old superstar has said she is planning to take things easy and spend quality time with her sports agent partner Rich Paul, 42, and her 11-year-old son Angelo – whom she has with ex-spouse Simon Konecki.
She told German outlet ZDF: “I don’t have any plans for new music, at all.
“I want a big break after this and I think I want to do other creative things, just for a little while.”
Adele has made no secret of the fact that she is keen to have another baby.
The ‘I Set Fire To The Rain’ hitmaker previously confessed she is a long way off from returning to the studio to work on a follow-up to 2021’s ’30’, however, Adele promised that when she does return with a new record, she will do a world tour.
She told gig-goers at Caesar’s Palace earlier this year: “I just don’t think I’m gonna write an album for quite some time.
“But next time I do, I’ll come to wherever it is you live.”
The ‘Chasing Pavements’ singer also explained why she started disappearing from the limelight for long periods before releasing a new album.
She said: “Sometimes I wonder if people think I’m calculated when I disappear for years on end and I’m elusive and I believe that less is more or something like that.
But the real reason that I’ve only had four albums and I don’t think that many people know this – they know that I have a child – my son is 11 years old. So if you do the math, that means that at the height of ‘21’… I fell pregnant. To many that would be, and it was, considered career suicide.
“It was there and then that I chose to reject the scarcity of success, and the idea that you have to be constantly relevant to be successful.
“And that perhaps, just maybe, I could be a hit both on and off the stage. And you’ll never guess what — I [redacted] got away with it!”
