Emmy Awards: Dan and Eugene Levy opening monologue highlights

OHMYGOSSIP — Eugene and Dan Levy poked fun at their relationship as they opened the Emmy Awards on Sunday (15.09.24).
The father-son duo weren’t afraid to laugh at themselves as they kicked off their first time hosting the annual event with a funny opening monologue.
Eugene said: “Little bit of Emmy history here, the very first Emmys’ host in 1949 was Walter O’Keefe.”
Dan added: “That’s true, and tonight we are making Emmy history as the very first father-son pair to mention Walter O’Keefe since 1949.”
And elsewhere, Eugene joked: “I played a lot of dads in my day … but without question my most rewarding dad role as been your dad . . . in ‘Schitt’s Creek’ because it got me my first acting Emmy.”
The 77-year-old actor was corrected by his son as he joked about why he is “proud” to be involved with AppleTV+.
Eugene said: “I’m particularly proud of my streamer AppleTV+, which which continues to proudly and visibly align itself with the LGBTQ community.”
Dan corrected: Eugene Levy said, promptly his son to correct, “That’s not what the plus stands for.”
The pair also mocked modern-day viewing habits, which frequently see audiences passively watching TV while doing other things.
Dan said: “The Creative Arts Emmys were held last weekend, the ‘Shogun’ team took home 14 Emmys, making it the most-decorated show in a single season, and deservedly so.
“The attention to detail on that show. The creators of ‘Shogun’ actually had their scripts translated into Japanese, rewritten and then translated back into English subtitles that you missed because you were also on your phone watching Sabrina Carpenter eat a hot wing.”
And Dan and Eugene took a swipe at ‘The Bear’, which its stars were seen laughing approvingly at.
Eugene said: “’The Bear’ is nominated for 23 Emmys tonight, the most-nominated comedy in history.
“Now, I love the show. I love the show. And I know some of you might be expecting us to make a joke about whether ‘The Bear’ is really a comedy.
“In the true spirit of ‘The Bear’, we will not be making any jokes.”

Emmy Award: Jelly Roll performs for In Memoriam segment

OHMYGOSSIP — Jelly Roll offered a “healing moment” for those mourning “storytellers” at the Emmy Awards on Sunday (16.09.24).
The 39-year-old country singer led this year’s In Memoriam segment at the annual ceremony, backed by string musicians and introduced his own performance of ‘I Am Not Okay’ with a touching message.
He said: “I believe that music is therapeutic. I believe that music can heal. I also believe that storytelling is just as cathartic. I hope this song can act as a healing moment for those who are mourning the storytellers we have lost this year.
“If you are feeling lost or alone tonight then I want you to know that it’s okay to not always be okay.”
He then sang the ballad as images of producers, writers, executives, crew members and performers who have passed away over the last 12 months were shown on screen.
Among those remembered in the tribute were actor Ryan O’Neal, presenter Phil Donoghue, fitness guru Richard Simmons, actress Shannen Doherty, and actors Carl Weathers, Donald Sutherland and James Earl Jones.
Veteran comedian Bob Newhart – who died in July aged 94 – was the final performer shown on screen and Jimmy Kimmel came out on stage at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles to pay tribute to him.
He quipped in part: “The Emmy for deceased industry professional we will miss most goes to…
“Hi everyone, this is the time in the show where we remember the legends we’ve lost over the past year, one of whom I was very lucky to know and that was Bob Newhart.
“Those of you who knew Bob know he was exactly who you thought he was and who you hoped he would be. He did not have range. He didn’t need to have range – Bob had what very few comedians have, especially today; a degree in accounting.”

Emmy Awards: Baby Reindeer takes Outstanding Limited Series

OHMYGOSSIP — Richard Gadd urged TV networks to “take risks” as he picked up the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series Emmy Award for ‘Baby Reindeer’ on Sunday (15.09.24).
The 35-year-old actor insisted his Netflix show – which was based on his own experiences – is proof that there is no “set formula” to what will do well so executives should just focus on “good storytelling” and not be afraid to “push boundaries”.
Accepting the award at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theatre, Richard said: “Thank you so much, this is unbelievable…
“I know the industry is in a slump right now and it might put pressure on networks to tighten the purse strings and broaden the slate but I do believe no slump was ever broken without a willingness to take risks.
“I think if ‘Baby Reindeer’ has proved anything, it’s that there’s no set formula to this. You don’t need big stars, proven IP long-running series, or catch-all storytelling to have a hit.
“But really the only constant across any success in television is good storytelling that speaks to our times, so take risks, push boundaries, explore the uncomfortable, dare to fail in order to achieve. Thank you so much for this award.”
The show won the award ahead of ‘Fargo’, ‘Lessons in Chemistry’, ‘Ripley’, ‘True Detective: Night Country’.
And it was Richard’s third win of the night as he also picked up Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Anthology or Movie and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, for which he beat off competition from Matt Bomer (‘Fellow Travelers’), Jon Hamm (‘Fargo’), Tom Hollander(‘Feud: Capote vs. The Swans’) and Andrew Scott (‘Ripley’).
He admitted the latter win came as a shock.
He said: “You’re all crazy. Thank you so much, I wasn’t expecting this one at all, I didn’t prepare.
“John Hamm, I’m your biggest fan as I told you for ages last night over and over again, but thank you directors Veronica and Josephine for bringing out the best of me, thank you to Matthew. ”
Richard also paid tribute to his parents.
He said: “I’d like to thank my mum and dad, they’re the best. We’ve had some trying times as a family and they’ve been through there for me, a constant source of love and support.
“The thing I’m most grateful for is they never, ever told me what I needed to do with my life and they never told me who I needed to be and I think that’s the greatest gift a parent can give a child. They said follow your heart and the rest will fall into place, and I think that’s good advice.”
Meanwhile, the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie prize went to ‘True Detective: Night Country’ star Jodie Foster, who hailed her victory an “incredibly emotional moment”.
She said: ” Well this is an incredibly emotional moment for me because ‘True Detective: Night Country’ was just a magical experience and it all comes from the top.”
Jodie took the award ahead of Brie Larson (‘Lessons in Chemistry’), Juno Temple (‘Fargo’), Sofía Vergara (‘Griselda’), and Naomi Watts (‘Feud: Capote vs. the Swans’).

Emmy Awards: Major wins for Hacks and Shogun

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Hacks’ was a surprise winner of the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy Award on Sunday (15.09.24).
The HBO series triumphed in a category that was expected to see ‘The Bear’ scoop top honours ahead of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, ‘Only Murders in the Building’, ‘Palm Royale’, ‘Reservation Dogs’ and ‘What We Do in the Shadows’, and co-creator Paul W. Downs admitted the win had left him stunned.
Joined by the cast and crew, Paul – who also appears on the show – said: “I have no thoughts in my brain. Thank you so much to the Academy.
“We are so lucky to live our dream and make television and we couldn’t do it without our ‘Hacks’ family. All of our writers, all of our cast, all of our crew who make our dreams come true literally.
“When we pitched this show about two women, one of whom was over 60, we really didn’t know if we could sell it.
“We have to thank… everyone at Universal and everyone who has helped make this show.
“About 20% of our population is 60+ but they’re only about 3% of the characters on television and I would like to see more of them because while I’m a great young supporting actor, I really want to be a good old lead.”
Meanwhile, ‘Shogun’ took the prestigious Outstanding Drama Series award ahead of ‘The Crown’, ‘Fallout’, ‘The Gilded Age’, ‘The Morning Show’, ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’, ‘Slow Horses’ and ‘3 Body Problem’.
Showrunner Justin Marks admitted he was stunned the show had even been made.
He said: “Thank you for this incredible honour. We are so grateful to our partners at Disney Television, to Dana Walden and Eric Schrier, to Hulu and especially FX, you guys green lit a very experience subtitled period piece whose central climax revolves around a poetry competition, I have no idea why you did that but thank you for your faith in this incredible team.
“We share this award with our extraordinary cast and crew from Japan and North America. ‘Shogun’ is a show about translation, not what is lost but what is found.”

“And then here I am just over a decade later picking up one of the biggest writing awards in television.”
“I don’t know much about this life, I don’t know why we’re here – none of that. But I do know nothing lasts forever and no matter how bad it gets, it always gets better. So if you’re struggling, keep going, keep going and I promise you things will be ok.”

Tito Jackson dead at 70

OHMYGOSSIP — Tito Jackson has died aged 70.
The Jacksons star is said to have suffered a heart attack while driving from New Mexico to Oklahoma, with the Jackson family’s former manager Steve Manning confirming the sad news to ET.
An official cause of death is not known.
The iconic group – also comprising Tito’s brothers Marlon, 67, and Jackie, 73, and his son Taryll, 49 – had played several shows this year, with Tito last onstage in Munich, Germany on September 10.
The older brother of the late King of Pop Michael Jackson and sister Janet, 58, shot to fame alongside his siblings in the Jackson 5 – who would later become the Jacksons – in the late 1960s and 1970s under the legendary Motown label.
The original lineup consisted of Jackie, Tito, Marlon, Michael, and Jermaine Jackson, 69.
Their best-known hits included ‘ABC’, ‘The Love You Save’, and ‘I’ll Be There’.
Tito was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Jackson 5, and the Jacksons received a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1980.
The singer and guitarist also embarked on a solo career in 2003 as a blues musician.
Just a few weeks ago, Tito spoke about still feeling the “feel the presence” of his brother Michael.
The 70-year-old singer discussed the “tragedy” of the ‘Thriller’ hitmaker’s passing from Acute propofol intoxication 15 years ago, aged 50, and admitted the world “missed out on a lot of goodness” from the music legend.
Tito said of his scandal-hit sibling: “The world was not kind to Michael at all. I don’t know why. I would always say if we didn’t have him, we sure would miss him. His death was such a major tragedy. The world definitely missed out on a lot of goodness from him, because he wasn’t just a musician or an artist, he was a loving person. He loved to give.”
Discussing where he believes the ‘Beat It’ hitmaker would be now, he said: “We always feel his presence on the stage. So that helps us a lot too. I can imagine Michael probably would have had three or four more hits by now, and they’d still be talking about him on the radio.
“When that time of year comes around, you feel this presence and just try to enjoy all the moments that you remember that you had together.
“Sometimes we like to have a performance on that day. Those are the days I really feel close to him, when we’re working and enjoying music, because that’s what we did together. Besides being brothers, that was our play time.”

“Thank you to the Academy for naming me alongside my fellow nominees whose work I have grown up watching and loved.

‘Shake it off, Donald’: Scooter Braun defends Taylor Swift against Donald Trump

OHMYGOSSIP — Scooter Braun has defended Taylor Swift against Donald Trump.
The 43-year-old former music manager famously fell out with Taylor, 34, after he bought the rights to her master recordings and allegedly slapped her with restrictions on performing her hits live before he sold the rights on to the private equity company Shamrock Holdings.
And after the 78-year-old politician declared he despises the ‘Shake It Off’ hitmaker over the weekend, Scooter stood up for her and commented on X: “Shake it off Donald. (sic)”
He also encouraged his fellow Americans to vote for Trump’s rival Kamala Harris in the November presidential election.
Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social five days after the performer announced in a long Instagram post she would be voting for his Democrat White House race rival Harris, 59.
He raged online on Sunday (15.09.24) in an all-capitalised message: “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!”
Along with announcing online she was supporting Harris as US president; Taylor urged her millions of Swifties to research the election and register to vote.
Trump lashed out at Taylor after saying he had “no idea” what his reaction was to the singer’s message supporting Harris after the pair of rivals faced off in a TV debate.
Taylor’s Instagram message drove more than 400,000 visitors to the vote.gov site in under a day.
She said: “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and (her vice president nominee) Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election.
“If you haven’t already, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the stances these candidates take on the topics that matter to you the most… as a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country.”
Taylor also used her note to blast images generated by artificial intelligence that were reportedly shared by Trump on Truth Social and had suggested she was endorsing him for president.
She said: “Recently I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site.
“It really conjured up my fears around AI and the dangers of spreading misinformation.
“It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter.
“The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth. I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make.”
In a dig at Trump’s running mate JD Vance, 40, and his infamous jibe at women who didn’t have children, the singer signed off her post as: “Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady.”

Sir Ian McKellen’s coming out changed lives

OHMYGOSSIP — Sir Ian McKellen believes coming out as gay back in the 1980s helped him forge meaningful connections with other people.
The ‘Lord of The Rings’ star went public with his sexuality back in 1988 and he is convinced that not only did it change his life, but it helped other people all over the world who were experiencing similar struggles.
In an interview with the Huffington Post, the 85-year-old actor admitted he’s “never been in the vanguard of change” and his role has been “really been supporting others who understood how to make change happen”.
He added: “But I’m aware, because people tell me, that it was helpful to them in their own journey to read about, and be aware of, people like me and Michael Cashman and Stephen Fry, and so many others. We’re all connected aren’t we?
“One of the wonderful things about coming out was not just that one’s life changes totally for the better – because you’re being honest, at last, with yourself and with other people – but that you make connections with other people who have been through the same problems as you have yourself.
“And not just in this country – far away. So, to bear witness just by saying that you’re gay can be a wonderful help to people.”
He added of his own coming out: “I just did what I did, and discovered in being honest about myself that I was then connected to lots of other people. My contribution was simply to be myself.”
Ian went on to shrug off the notion that he’s seen as a “national treasure” and insisted people are getting him mixed up with his ‘Lord of The Rings’ character Gandalf.
He added: “When people, as they sometimes do, praise me for the effect I’ve had on their own lives … well that wasn’t me, really. That was probably Gandalf, you know?”

She told MailOnline: “They just ignored me. I felt quite rejected. There was not even a Liam kind of comment or anything – there were attempts to make contact through their management, it was a complete blank.”
Emma – who was born just months after Liam – went on to reveal she believed the upcoming Oasis reunion might give her another chance to bring the family together, but she’s been met with silence.

“It was immediately better for all of us … I was always out playing football, load of energy, never depressed, not a loner, just rounding up the troops … let’s go and have a bit of mischief.”

Tom Cruise performed Risky Business dance on date with Heather Locklear

OHMYGOSSIP — Tom Cruise performed his famous ‘Risky Business’ dance on a date with actress Heather Locklear.
The ‘Melrose Place’ actress, 62, has revealed she first met Tom at an audition for a film during their early years in Hollywood and they became friends even though they both gave a “terrible” performance and missed out on the parts.
Speaking during a panel at 90s Con Florida on Saturday (14.09.24), Heather explained: “We both did an audition for the film together – the two of us – and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m terrible’ … He’s even worse!’
“So at that time he was just like this little baby boy that I feel like I was a little bit older, and he ended up coming over to my house with Sean Penn. And they were just nice, but he was very, ‘yes ma’am’ to me, and I was like, ‘okay, sir’.”
However, Heather did agree to go out on a date with Tom and he ended up pulling out his best dance moves which later ended up on screen in his 1983 movie ‘Risky Business’.
Heather said: “We went out dancing to Club Lingerie at that time and, and I’ve said this before, I mean, he was really cute … He actually did that [the dance moves] before [the movie], and I was dancing along like, ‘Do you stop dancing if they’re down there?’. I was like ‘Yay!’ But he was very nice to me.”
The pair didn’t end up dating, joking: “He didn’t quite cut it” but she still looks back on their time together fondly.
Heather went on to marry married Motley Crue rocker Tommy Lee in 1986 and after their divorce, she went on to marry another musician – Bon Jovi’s guitarist Richie Sambora – a year later. They separated in 2007.

Holland noted that there is “a lot of variety ” in their relationship as they spend a lot of time going between each other’s properties.
Meanwhile, Holland was nominated for an Emmy for her role in ‘The Morning Show’ and even thigh she lost out to ‘The Crown’ star Elizabeth Debicki, Sarah was ready to support her significant other ahead of time and kept her cool with a fan.

She said: “I think we’re interested in the same things about character in people.
“I think we like thinking about people in the same way, understanding them. ‘What is their thing? What is the thing that drives them, pleases them, hurts them? What’s the thing?’ We just like to understand these things.”
Sarah has enjoyed huge success during her career – but she’s always remained connected to her friends.
Holland explained: “I mean, she has quite a number of really close friends. But for Sarah, having close friends means spending time with them, knowing what’s going on with them, keeping in touch with them. And if anything is going on with anybody, she’ll have them on her mind, and she’ll check in late at night, ‘How are you doing? How’s it going?’ I mean, she’s just the most thoughtful and attentive friend I’ve ever seen anybody be. She’s really wonderful though.”

Joshua Jackson insists Ozempic was not behind his recent weight loss

OHMYGOSSIP — Joshua Jackson has insisted that he didn’t use Ozempic to lose weight.
The 46-year-old actor – who has four-year-old daughter Juno with his ex-wife Jodie Turner-Smith – has slimmed down in recent months, but insisted that it has nothing to do with the controversial Hollywood weight loss drug.
He told US TV show ‘Extra’: “I got a four-year-old I got to chase around… I think that’s what it is. I don’t think [Ozempic] is for me.”
Ozempic is the brand name for Semaglutide, which was initially intended for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes but has a side effect of weight loss via appetite suppression.
Meanwhile, Joshua talked about fatherhood but admitted that he does not really any plans to have a “village”, unlike hisn his ‘Dawson Creek’ co-star James Van Der Beek, who has six daughters with his wife Kimberly.
Asked if there is a group chat with his former castmates, he said: “Van Der Beek is just having kids. That’s his thing. I’ve got one, he’s got a whole village. He is part of a group of men that are slowly going away from our industry who have ties back into the Golden Era, and it is such a joy to just sit around and listen to that man talk.”
These days, the ‘Mighty Ducks’ star – who shot to fame in the title role of the teen melodrama in the late 1990s – has managed to negotiate some work-life balance with his latest project and is thrilled because it landed him a trip to Disneyland.
He said: “This job that I’m working on is such a miracle because it shoots here so I get to be here. My daughter’s in school. I get to have a little bit of real life with my work. It’s a good thing. They gave me free tickets to Disneyland. Like I said, I have a 4-year-old, so that’s about all the perk I need! ”

Kelly Osbourne claims rehab centres fuel addiction for profit

OHMYGOSSIP — Kelly Osbourne claims a rogue sector of the rehab industry is fuelling the addiction crisis by encouraging users to relapse.
The 39-year-old TV star – daughter of Black Sabbath star Ozzy Osbourne – is a recovering addict and has endured numerous stints in rehab over the years and she has now admitted she learnt “tricks” to hide her addictions during her time in facilities and she alleges some use “body brokers” to target recovery meetings and encourage relapses to get people back into the programs.
During an appearance in ‘TMZ Investigates Matthew Perry and the Secret Celebrity Drug Ring’, Kelly explained: “Body brokers. They’ll sit outside of AA meetings and looking for weak and vulnerable people that they encourage to go and relapse so they can then pick you up again … I swear on everything that it’s true and it’s heartbreaking. ”
She also spoke about her own time in rehab, admitting it taught her to be a “better drug addict” and she also claimed to have seen rehab staff giving drugs to users to stop them from leaving.
She explained: “First rehab I went to was like university on how to be a better drug addict … I learnt so many tricks so many things that I never even thought of from my fellow addicts that were in there.
“But I’d also seen people threaten to leave unless they were given what they wanted. Whether it be Ambien for sleep or Valium for nerves, they would somehow end up getting it … and they end up giving them whatever it is they’ve asked for [to make them stay].”
The documentary focuses on the case of late ‘Friends’ star Matthew Perry, who died last year after suffering a drug overdose after years of battling addiction issues.
Perry’s assistant Kenny Iwamasa and four other people – including two doctors – have been arrested and charged in connection with supplying the drugs that killed the actor.
