Normal People author Sally Rooney reveals why she ‘isn’t comfortable’ being famous

OHMYGOSSIP — Sally Rooney “isn’t comfortable” being famous.
The 33-year-old author was propelled to global notoriety with her novel ‘Normal People’ – which was later adapted into a hit miniseries starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal – but admitted that she doesn’t enjoy the side of marketing her work once it is done.
She told The Sunday Times: “I don’t have any interest in marketing my books. And I certainly don’t answer interview questions with the intention of selling my book to readers. Whenever I publish a novel I feel obliged to answer questions about it —as if it would be poor form not to. A lot of people seem to want to ask me questions, and if I refused to answer I would feel like a politician refusing to do a press conference. Which is obviously silly. Maybe I ought not answer any questions at all. But I feel like it’s a way of remaining loyal to my work and not shying away from it.
“I wouldn’t say that I enjoy publishing books. I enjoy writing them. I understand I am lucky to be in a position where my books are published and allow me to earn a living. I absolutely know and feel how blessed I am to be able to spend years working on a single book with no one bothering me about when it will be finished. But the publication period is a source of stress for me. And I think that’s because I’m not comfortable in the public eye and I worry that I’m not a very good ambassador for my work.
The ‘Conversations With Friends’ author also noted that anything that she put into the public domain via an interview is a source of embarrassment for her but she would feel “guilty” if she were to publish her work without any promotion.
She said: “If I ever have to read back over an interview I’ve given, I always want the earth to swallow me. Whereas when I read over my fiction, I feel like it stands up. I like my books. I just don’t like the version of me who appears in the newspapers every three or four years to talk about them. But if I didn’t do that I would feel guilty, like I was sending my book out into the world alone. Like a bad parent. That’s the conundrum I find myself grappling with when it’s time to publish a book. Which is a relatively rare occurrence. The vast majority of my working life is devoted to writing — and I am truly grateful for that.”

Hayden Panettiere is open to marriage

OHMYGOSSIP — Hayden Panettiere is open to getting married.
The 35-year-old actress split from her boxer partner Wladimir Klitschko, 48, in 2018 after nine years together, and even though she now feels “content” with her place in life, the ‘Heroes’ star revealed she would be open to walking down the aisle with the “right person”.
When PEOPLE magazine asked Panettiere if the idea of marriage was on the table, she said: “For the right person, yes.
“Though there’s a certain place I would want both of us to be in our lives.”
The ‘Nashville’ star stressed she was focused on her nine-year-old daughter Kaya – whom she has with Klitschko – and gushed about how proud she was of her.
The actress said: “She does so many things. She golfs, she plays chess. She’s been dancing since she was little and loves singing.
“I have a video of her singing ‘Moana’ that would make you laugh our butt off. And horses are her life.”
Looking inwards, Panettiere shared she had striving to better herself by working out with her person trainer Marine Alton, whom she also calls her “life coach”.
The actress said: “It’s been so good for my mental health.”
Even so, Panettiere admitted she hasn’t ever been a fan of exercise.
She conceded: “I’ve always hated worked out.
“I never really had to do it before because I was playing sports or getting exercise on sets.
“I had the most amazing legs when I was filming ‘Nashville’ because I had to wear these high, high heels, and I’d given my character Juliette Barnes this little sideways walk she’d do when she performed, and it was basically like doing squads all day.”
The ‘Scream VI’ actress gushed about her trainer, and emphasised Alton had “empowered” her to embrace herself and look past her insecurities.
She said: “These long, beautiful walks where we could vent, and it would be this therapy session.”
“She empowered me.
“My body just started reacting, not just from the working out. It allowed me to release the stress, the high expectations I’d always put on myself.”

Dame Zandra Rhodes kept her cancer diagnosis private to avoid losing work

OHMYGOSSIP — Dame Zandra Rhodes kept her cancer diagnosis private to avoid losing work.
The 84-year-old fashion and textile designer – who has worked with the likes of Queen legend Freddie Mercury and Princess Diana over the course of her career – was given six months to live in 2020 when doctors discovered a tumour in her bile duct and kept schtum as she underwent an intense course of treatment during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
She told The Observer magazine: ““It was COVID then, so I realised no one need know, and I decided not to tell anyone because if people knew I wouldn’t get any more work!”
Zandra – who declared earlier this year that she is now in remission – believes that work and life are so “entwined” that the shock diagnosis actually made her “focus” on the kind of legacy she would like to leave behind as she set about establishing the The Zandra Rhodes Foundation to inspire future generations of designers.
She said: “I think the two are so entwined… And I don’t think I had time for that bit. “It was very positive, actually. I feel like it was a warning, that I had to get my life in order, get everything done. It made me focus. And if it wasn’t for that I’d have never formed a foundation and never found out I had 6,000 dresses all hidden away that now I’m sending to museums across the world, never finished the book. So… it’s been rather wonderful, really.”
The Emmy Award-winning star has never been married, and chose not to have children but admitted her unorthodox choices have given her the chance to live a “fabulous” life.
She said: “My sister has four children and is a wonderful mother. I am a successful fashion designer who has led a very different but fabulous life.”

How Prince William helped the Middletons through their early days of fame

OHMYGOSSIP — Prince William was a “fantastic support” to the Middleton family in their early days of fame.
The 42-year-old royal met Catherine, Princess of Wales in the days that she was known as Kate Middleton during their time at university and the pair tied the knot in 2011 but her brother James Middleton, 37, has recalled how the prince helped them all through the “pressure” of adjusting to global notoriety amid his struggles with mental health.
He told The Sunday Times: “William was a fantastic support for us as a family. He did everything he could to protect us from the intense interest, not just in Catherine, but also her immediate family. But at that time I was already in a vulnerable state of mind and it was an added pressure.”
James – who is now married to Alizée Thevenet and has son Inigo, 11 months, with her – was then asked to give a Bible reading at the wedding of William and Catherine – which was televised and received an audience of 162 million viewers from around the world – and recalled that it was such an “honour” that his sister had asked him to do it in the first place, although he noted that the anticipation was just like any other family wedding he has been to.
He said: “I’d never seen a royal wedding.
“There hadn’t been one in my lifetime. Not a big one anyway. I wasn’t aware of the scale or the global interest. I just felt privileged that my sister was asking me to do it, and it meant something to her. I wanted to make sure I did it. Really, the build-up to Catherine’s wedding was no different to Pippa’s or other friends’ weddings.”

Coleen Rooney gives rare insight into her marriage with footballing legend husband Wayne Rooney

OHMYGOSSIP — Coleen and Wayne Rooney have had to make their marriage work long-distance.
The 38-year-old star has been married to footballer Wayne, also 38, since 2008 and has Kai, 14, Klay, 11, Kit, eight, and six-year-old Cass with him but when the former Manchester United player started his role as manager for Plymouth Argyle, the couple decided that leaving their Chesire home together just wasn’t practical.
She told The Sunday Mirror newspaper: “We see him a couple of times a week, which is good. He went to America, so this is a bonus because even though it seems like far away, it’s easier to get to than Washington, DC.
“There’s lots of FaceTime and he always phones when we’re going out of the door in the morning. I’m like, ‘Just wait till we’re in the car. I’ve got no time!’ We thought long and hard about it (moving to Devon) but with the kids it didn’t work.
“Kai’s now in year 10 and just starting GCSE prep and everything’s going well with football, and the other boys are all settled at school, so it didn’t seem fair on the children to pick them up and take them away, and start in a whole new place. It’s manageable. It’s life. Other couples and families have similar situations and have to get on with it.”
Coleen first started dating Wayne when they were teenagers and was catapulted into the public eye when his football career took off but admitted that she had to “grow up quick” and is now “protective” of her own kids when it comes to modern issues like social media.
She said: “I was wise for my age but I had to grow up quick. I wouldn’t say I am more protective of him (Kai), I would say it opens your eyes that things can happen young and to make them aware.
“When Wayne was coming up, he wasn’t on social media, whereas now there’s a lot more of that and that’s where you’ve got to prepare the kids for if they do go on to be successful.
“But the football academy they are in, and school as well, they have workshops and they prepare the kids for what you should and shouldn’t do on social media. It’s always good to nip in the bud earlier than later.”

Rupert Everett admits he tries to avoid his reflection as he ages

OHMYGOSSIP — Rupert Everett tries to avoid his reflection as he ages.
The 65-year-old actor, who had an early role in a stage adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s morality play about the evils of vanity, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’, added he can no longer take alcohol as he ages – but drinks anyway as he craves it at 5pm every day.
He told The Mail on Sunday when asked what he sees when he looks in the mirror: “Oh, I never look in the mirror if I can help it.”
Rupert added about the disadvantages of ageing: “Your liver is just not as strong when you’re older. You’re tipsy quicker.
“And your recovery period is longer. Old age is much better approached without alcohol, if you can do it.
“But the thing is, at five o’clock in the evening, every nerve ending in my body is craving a drink.”
Rupert also admitted even though he “wouldn’t change anything” about his life and career he “certainly” has regrets.
The actor also confessed he married his long-term boyfriend, Henrique, a Brazilian accountant, in May at a ceremony at Camden Town Hall in London due to the fact he is getting older.
He said: “Well, I’m old and I might die and there’s more protection for your other half if you’re married.
“We’ve been together for a long time, and it felt like the best thing to do.”
The star also insisted he is no longer connected with other famous faces, unlike in his earlier partying years.
He added: “I don’t know anybody. I mean, I really don’t any more. I’m keeping going but I don’t go to parties or anything like that.
“I’m like a bicycle without brake pads now. I’m careering down the hill and I’m putting on the brakes and nothing’s happening.
“The older you get, the more shrill and anxious you become.
“You become more fearful about everything.”

Margaret Qualley says filming ‘The Substance’ took her way out of ‘comfort zone’

OHMYGOSSIP — Margaret Qualley says making her edgy new film ‘The Substance’ took her way out of her “comfort zone”.
The actress, 29, who is the daughter of ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ actress Andie MacDowell, 66, shot to fame thanks to her roles in ‘The Leftovers’ and ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’, and has now opened up about the challenges of shooting her latest role alongside 61-year-old Demi Moore.
She told People about how the body-horror film, directed by Coralie Fargeat, 48, was “really outside of my comfort zone”: “I guess, for me, it’s something I’ve really never done.
“I think I’ve intentionally gone the other direction throughout my career.
“I knew it was going to be a big challenge for me.”
But Margaret added the nudity in the movie was not exploitative and “very much serves the purpose of this story”.
She added: “It’s a road you have to go down in order to bring this to life. And I was excited about that challenge.”
Margaret has told how she got “wasted” on drugs and tequila to get through filming one particularly raunchy scene in ‘The Substance’.
She told The Sunday Times: “That specific kind of sexuality doesn’t lend itself to me.”
Margaret added she cried in a bathroom when she first rehearsed a scene in which her TV aerobics instructor character Sue does a sexed-up dance wearing a skimpy workout outfit because she felt “so deeply ashamed” making it.
She went on about how she added marijuana and alcohol into the emotional mix to get through the shoot: “And still, day of, I just got wasted first thing in the morning because I was like, I can’t do this in front of everybody.”
Margaret’s Sunday Times profile said “a combination of weed and tequila provided Dutch courage” helped her cope with the scene.
‘The Substance’ tells of Demi as a washed-up fitness guru who takes a mystery black market drug to create a younger, sexier version of herself, played by Margaret.

Janet Jackson apologises for questioning US Vice President Kamala Harris’ race

OHMYGOSSIP — Janet Jackson is sorry she questioned US Vice President Kamala Harris’ race.
The singer, 58, was met with a huge backlash over the weekend after she falsely claimed during an interview with The Guardian the 59-year-old Democrat wasn’t black, in an echo of a right-wing conspiracy theory.
On Sunday (22.09.24) the Grammy winner issued an apology statement for her remarks to People, which said: “Janet Jackson acknowledges that her recent comments about Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial identity were based on misinformation. She extends her sincerest apologies for any confusion caused and reaffirms her respect for Harris’ dual heritage as both Black and Indian.”
“Janet remains committed to fostering unity, inclusion, and understanding and is grateful for the opportunity to clarify her stance.
“She will continue to use her platform to support leaders who represent diversity and progress.”
Janet made her controversial remark about Kamala in her chat with The Guardian, which was published on Saturday (21.09.24), when her interviewer said the politician could become the first black woman to be elected US president.
Janet replied: “Well, you know what they supposedly said? She’s not black. That’s what I heard. That she’s Indian.”
When the Guardian reporter told Janet that Kamala is actually both, the singer falsely declared: “Her father’s white. That’s what I was told. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days.
“I was told that they discovered her father was White.”
The singer added she wasn’t sure if the US was “ready” for a “woman of colour” as leader in the White House, adding: “I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t want to answer that because I really, truthfully, don’t know.
“I think either way it goes is going to be mayhem.”
Kamala’s mother Dr Shyamala Gopalan was raised in India and her father Donald J Harris, immigrated from Jamaica to study economics at the University of California in Berkeley, which is where he met Shyamala.
Kamala’s US presidential election rival Donald Trump, 78, previously sparked outrage when he made false claims about Harris’ race at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in July, saying she “became a Black person”.
He said: “She was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting the Indian heritage.
“I didn’t know she was black, until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn black, and now she wants to be known as black. So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she black?”

The singer, 36, has recently been documenting her weight loss journey with photo updates for her fans on Instagram, and has now revealed that just months into her lifestyle overhaul she has been hit by body-shaming accusations.
She posted the Ozempic troll’s comment on her Instagram alongside another post sharing their profile.

In the audio of Lizzo’s clip, rapper Nicki Minaj could be heard hitting back at people commenting on her appearance – with Lizzo mouthing along to the 41-year-old performer’s voice: “The fact that you would even discuss my looks is insane. “I’m a bad b****, always been a bad b****.”

Rupert Everett slams state of modern movies

OHMYGOSSIP — Rupert Everett has slammed the state of modern movies.
The 65-year-old actor has racked up more than 50 film appearances during his career and has been nominated for BAFTAs and Golden Globes for his roles in movies including ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ and 1999’s ‘An Ideal Husband’.
He has now blasted today’s “mainstream” films as jokes, telling the Mail on Sunday the genre has “fallen off the edge of a cliff”.
His Mail profile said he thought ‘Barbie’ was overrated and ‘Oppenheimer’ was “like a French and Saunders sketch”.
He added: “What would you call the mainstream of today? There aren’t really 90-minute movies any more.”
Rupert also slated streaming giants’ TV series offerings, saying: “They kind of urge you to stay in your room and be up all night watching 18 episodes.
“You can’t get a grip on the narrative in the same way as you can in a film or play. And we’re so numbed!
“You have to more or less put a grenade up someone’s bum and set it off to get any reaction at all.”
Rupert also blasted he thinks reality TV shows have killed British culture.
He said he a “rough and tumble quality” has disappeared from UK arts offerings, adding: “I think The X Factor changed it. I think (Simon Cowell) is responsible for a cultural deadening.”
Rupert also said one of his biggest career regrets was not focusing more on his theatre work when he was younger.
