Ritchie Neville opens up on boyband life

OHMYGOSSIP — Ritchie Neville has opened up about the tough reality of life in a boyband.
The 45-year-old singer and his former Five bandmates Scott Robinson, Sean Conlon, J Brown and Abz Love signed a six-album deal with BMG/RCA in 1997 but struggled to cope with the pressures of fame and split.
Revealing that they were paid just £100 a week after starting out, Ritchie also claimed he only had “two days off in two years”.
Ritchie – who will appear in the upcoming BBC series ‘Boybands Forever’ – told The Guardian newspaper: “People often don’t get it. They think being in a famous band is a dream. But I’ve had situations where I’m out with friends and, when I start talking, jaws drop to the floor. They’re like, ‘Oh my god, is that really what it was like?’”
Ritchie also shared how a bandmate once had to steal his passport after management refused to let him leave the tour after he got sick.
He said: “In the end, they wouldn’t give me my passport to fly home. Scott had to go in and nick my passport and just hand it to me and bundle me in a taxi at four in the morning. At the time, I didn’t think that much of it. Now, that’s an encroachment of power, isn’t it really? It’s almost imprisonment.”
And, Ritchie admitted the fans could be overzealous and inappropriate.
Speaking about one particular encounter when he was 17 or 18 and the fan was in her thirties, he said: “While we were doing the picture, she just grabbed me down there like it was perfectly normal. I was like, ‘What are you doing?’ The thing is, a lot of guys would be like, ‘What I wouldn’t give for that!’ But it’s not always pleasant, if you don’t ask for it. It’s like, ‘Why are you doing that? Please don’t do it again.’”
Speaking previously about the financial issues he experienced, he told The Times in 2022: ‘We sold 20 million records worldwide, so people assume the royalty cheques kept on coming, but you’d be surprised at the actual figures.
“Obviously it’s split between five members, then you’ve got the production teams and the producers. It was a classic example of how record companies treat young artists…
“You think you’ve won the lottery, and don’t get me wrong we had some brilliant experiences, but financially they take the lion’s share and by the time it’s finished it’s too late. It’s done.”

Phil Elverum ‘can’t listen’ to songs he wrote about Michelle Williams

OHMYGOSSIP — Phil Elverum “can’t listen” to the songs he wrote about Michelle Williams.
The 46-year-old singer/songwriter and the 44-year-old actress split in 2019, less than a year after secretly tying the knot, and Phil has admitted he “got dumped” and now finds it “embarrassing” to listen to the songs he wrote about their relationship.
Speaking to The Guardian newspaper, Phil – who lost his first wife Geneviève Castrée to cancer in 2016 – said: “I made all these life changes. But then it didn’t work, and I got dumped and had to move back home.
“The person in these songs was still alive; I couldn’t speak as freely about her, and felt more protective of her anonymity. I can’t listen to those songs now. [They were written in] a period of hopefulness, when I thought maybe understanding could be reached. And now I know that it can’t. It’s still a little embarrassing in hindsight, just because of how painfully it ended, and how abruptly. The trauma from that lasted a weirdly long time.”
Phil also admitted he underwent more therapy after his divorce from Michelle – who married Thomas Kail, 47, in 2020 – than after his first wife died.
He said: “It seems like [losing Castrée] should be a bigger trauma, but it didn’t require as much therapy.”
Phil has now moved on with a new partner but revealed he has been thinking a lot about his past relationships.
He said: “I’ve been talking recently with my partner, about the role of the past in one’s present, and about moving forward. I have a lot of layers of past; I have this daughter, and her mom died, and we have some of her things around. And I’ve got this new life, this new house I built, a new partner.
“I feel like I’m in the later stages of dealing with the loss and the grief. It’s not as raw. I’ve found peace. I get to live in the luxury of: I’m going to spend today looking at that cloud passing over the hill and thinking about what it means when a bird squawks at me. I take the responsibility seriously, to find something real and meaningful in this human experience.
“People say grief doesn’t end, that it’s with you for life and just changes. That’s true. I’m in a phase now where the role grief plays in my life is giving me this beautiful, deepening understanding of things.”

Fame is a figment of other people’s imaginations, says Boy George

OHMYGOSSIP — Boy George believes fame “is a figment of other people’s imaginations”.
The 63-year-old music star – who is best known as the lead singer of the pop band Culture Club – has suggested that isn’t a real thing.
Speaking to Sky News, he explained: “Fame is a figment of other people’s imaginations. You’re only famous because other people believe you are.”
The singer had a “real problem” with fame during his younger years. But the ‘Karma Chameleon’ hitmaker – whose real name is George O’Dowd – now considers what he does to be “just a job”.
He said: “I think of Boy George from the ’80s as a sort of cartoon character. Because on the one hand, there was this public persona, which was one thing, and it was very recognisable. And then there was me behind it … I used to have a real problem with [fame] and I feel now I’m like, it’s just a job.”
The chart-topping pop star acknowledged that his relationship with fame has evolved during the course of his career.
He shared: “I never really took it that seriously. There were moments when I lost my mind – we all know what they were. But I always kind of knew who I was.”
The singer’s popularity peaked in the 80s, but he still enjoys making music.
He said: “A lot of stuff I release, no one really hears of it unless they’re like a mad hardcore fan.
“I’ve released 54 tracks in the last year, probably more than any other artist. And I will continue to keep putting stuff out and being creative because it feels like breathing, you know, it feels really enjoyable and I feel lucky that I get to do the thing I love.”

Jax Taylor recalls ‘hitting the bottom of the barrel’

OHMYGOSSIP — Jax Taylor “hit the bottom of the barrel” when Brittany Cartwright was flirting with one of his friends.
The 45-year-old star has admitted to feeling devastated when he learned that Brittany, his estranged wife, was texting with his friend Julian.
Jax – who married Brittany in 2019 – said on the ‘Hot Mic’ podcast: “We were sitting in my house, and her phone was on the coffee table. And a message popped up, and I looked at it, and it was a simple message from Julian.
“But it was at night, and it was just a very weird message, and I called her on it. I caught her in a couple of lies, and then I got it out of her an hour into the conversation. She finally broke and told me.”
Jax felt particularly hurt when he discovered that Brittany, 35 – who filed for a divorce earlier this year – was flirting with one of his friends.
He said: “I don’t think I would have been bothered by it if it was somebody else that I didn’t know. There was a whole five or six months where I wasn’t seeing anybody, but this was going on.”
Jax admitted he “went crazy” when he discovered that the duo were sending flirty photos to each other.
He said: “I lost it. That was where I hit the bottom of the barrel. That’s where I saw red. I kind of had an out of body experience, I’m not gonna lie to you. I went crazy.”
Jax actually wants his estranged wife to find happiness. However, he hopes it’s not with one of his own friends.
The reality TV star said: “I want her to meet somebody, just not somebody I know.”

Paris Hilton launches pet grooming line

OHMYGOSSIP — Paris Hilton is launching a “pet grooming line”.
The 43-year-old star has announced the launch of a new pet grooming collection, which is being made available through Amazon.
Paris – who is a life-long animal lover – told PEOPLE: “Just in time for the holidays, I’m beyond excited to introduce my new, iconic pet grooming line!
“Every pet deserves to feel pampered, which is why we crafted these products with natural ingredients and signature scents.”
The Paris Hilton Pet Grooming line has been developed by Kira Labs, and includes various products that are vegan and vet-recommended.
The reality TV star is convinced that the products – which include shampoos and odour-control sprays – will prove to be a hit with consumers.
She added: “There’s something special for every pup to enjoy a one-of-a-kind spa and grooming experience.”
Meanwhile, Paris previously claimed that she was “before [her] time” as an influencer.
The blonde beauty enjoyed huge success in the early 2000s, but Paris noted that technology has changed celebrity culture.
She told Paper magazine: “Back when I started in this industry almost two decades ago, there was no social media and I had no agent, publicist, stylist, manager or anyone. I did this all on my own, I was literally just being me.
“Soon the press started to call me ‘famous for being famous’ – which I think is actually an awesome thing; to be able to create something just by being yourself. I was definitely way before my time.
“Now today, it is a completely different world. If you have an iPhone and a talent, you can literally film from your own bedroom and create your business, which was not possible before. I love how so many kids’ dreams are coming true just with technology and being able to showcase themselves and broadcast it to the world in ways that were not even imaginable back when I started out.”

Denzel Washington hates watching himself on-screen

OHMYGOSSIP — Denzel Washington doesn’t watch any of his old films “from start to finish”.
The 69-year-old actor has enjoyed a hugely successful career in Hollywood, starring in movies such as ‘Training Day’ and ‘Malcolm X’ – but Denzel has admitted he doesn’t enjoy seeing himself on the big screen.
He told The Times newspaper: “I watch it so I know what I’m talking about. But I haven’t watched any film from my past from start to finish, not even ‘Malcolm X’. All you see is what you did wrong. Also why would you do it anyway?”
Denzel starred in ‘Malcolm X’ in 1992, but he’s confessed to making “some real clunkers” in the subsequent years.
He said: “In life, you learn, earn and then you return – as in give back. So if your life is 90 years long, up until 30 you learn and from 30 to 60 you earn.
“So in that era I was earning. With a great agent, my career built into making money and so the earning kicked in and then life also kicked in, with bills, four kids and a house … After ‘Malcolm X’ I made some real clunkers. Look them up – I won’t say their names.”
Asked if he’s ever made a bad movie, Denzel replied: “They are all in the 1990s. But I was earning. I had responsibilities.”
Despite this, the veteran stars believes that his real-life personality shines through in some of his on-screen performances.
He explained: “You bring yourself to the part. And, look, I think I’m a good guy. I try to do the right thing.
“I’m a simple guy and I got a great job and so, maybe, coming into my movies, you go, ‘Denzel? He’s a good guy – we’ve seen him in other things where he has that good in him.’ You bring yourself to your work, no matter what. And I try to help people.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Boy George was fiercely competitive in the 1980s.
The 63-year-old singer shot to stardom as the lead singer of the pop band Culture Club in the 80s, and he’s recalled being ultra competitive with his pop rivals.
He told Sky News: “When you’re young, everything’s a competition.
“As you get older, you get a bit more confident about who you are and more secure and therefore you’re able to enjoy things without feeling threatened. So I think in the ’80s, all of us were in competition with each other … nowadays I’m kind of able to enjoy a lot of bands that I hissed at in the past, you know.”
George recalled clashing with Madonna during the 80s, and he’s acknowledged that there was never “any kind of warmth” between them.
Despite this, the ‘Do You Really Want to Hurt Me’ hitmaker is still a big fan of the pop icon.
He shared: “Over the years we sort of met each other, but there’s never been any kind of warmth necessarily on either side. But I am a fan … with me, if I like the music, I don’t necessarily have to be best friends with the person … I can like things without being petty.”

The 83-year-old music star and Paul haven’t performed together in more than a decade – but Art has refused to rule out the possibility of Simon and Garfunkel reuniting.
Asked about the possibility of a reunion, Art told The Independent: “We’ll see. I don’t know if he’s in the mood to work with me. I’m in the mood to work with him.”
Art subsequently cited Las Vegas as an ideal location for a possible reunion.
The ‘Mrs. Robinson’ hitmaker said: “Vegas. You move into Vegas and you stay put for a while. They come to you. You remove the travelling part of singing; it’s a better formula … I don’t want to be on the road and do show after show.”
Earlier this month, Art revealed that he became emotional during a recent lunch with Simon.
The award-winning duo – who had an infamously turbulent working relationship – discussed some of their previous disagreements during the lunch.
He told The Sunday Times newspaper: “I actually had lunch with Paul a couple of weeks back. First time we’d been together in many years. I looked at Paul and said, ‘What happened? Why haven’t we seen each other?’
“Paul mentioned an old interview where I said some stuff. I cried when he told me how much I had hurt him. Looking back, I guess I wanted to shake up the nice guy image of Simon and Garfunkel. Y’know what? I was a fool!”
Art went on to reveal the pair were planning to meet up again and he’s determined to “make amends before it’s too late”.
He said: “We’ve made plans to meet again. Will Paul bring his guitar? Who knows. For me, it was about wanting to make amends before it’s too late.
“It felt like we were back in a wonderful place. As I think about it now, tears are rolling down my cheeks. I can still feel his hug.”

The ‘Skyfall’ hitmaker is due to conclude her ‘Weekends with Adele’ concert series at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace after two years later this month and she has repeated her claim that she’s not currently got any plans in the pipeline to get back on stage in the near future because she wants to spend more time with fiance Rich Paul, her 12-year-old son Angelo, who she has with ex-husband Simon Konecki, and “another kid”.
According to The Sun on Sunday newspaper’s Bizarre column, she told fans this weekend: “In two weeks, I am retiring. This is the end. It’s the 100th and final show the weekend before Thanksgiving. And that’s the last one.

JLS singer Oritse Williams and wife welcome son into the world

OHMYGOSSIP — Oritse Williams and his wife are “on cloud nine” after welcoming a son into the world.
The JLS singer – who already has 10-year-old Omre from a previous relationship – announced last month that his spouse Kazz was pregnant, but the couple have now revealed that their little boy, Shiva Zion Olumidé Williams, was actually born on 3 October, a week before they shared the news on Instagram.
The couple had kept Kazz’s pregnancy as private as possible after she previously suffered two devastating miscarriages.
Oritse told Britain’s OK! magazine: “We decided to keep our pregnancy news to just close friends and family.”
Kazz, 40, added: “Previously, we had two miscarriages – we were devastated. When we found out we were pregnant this time around, I was happy and scared at the same time.”
The couple are “in awe” of the little one.
The 37-year-old singer gushed: “Honestly, I’m on cloud nine. I’m in complete awe of my baby boy, he is truly a blessing and I’m proud of us…
“He is such a blessing. Our journey has been hard and we are grateful for the support and love we received when we opened up about our previous losses.”
The ‘Beat Again’ hitmaker and his wife were keen to pay tribute to their heritage when naming their son.
Oritse explained: “Shiva is one of the highest deities in South Asian culture, it represents the destroyer of darkness and negativity, and also the creator of all things beautiful and hopeful.
“Then Zion was a name we’ve both loved for a while. It means a place of unity, peace and freedom, and it resonates very deeply within Caribbean culture and my African roots.
“Finally, Olumidé is one of my middle names, and it means my hero has come. All three represent our South Asian, Caribbean and African cultures.”
And they are already discussing having another child.
Oritse said: “Oh, he’s so cute, we have to make another one.”
Kazz added: “Oritsé was telling me yesterday that we shouldn’t wait too long.
“I was thinking of a five-year age gap but maybe just one or two now. Shiva is also a really good sleeper, which helps. Although, everyone keeps saying ‘wait until the terrible twos’, so we’ll see!”
