“Megan’s heart-wrenching novel, and Alice’s wonderful adaptation, present a story about motherhood, separation, social and environmental upheaval, and those primal instincts in us which draw moments of joy and inspiration out of the chaos. We are incredibly excited to have Mahalia and Jodie lead this talented creative team in making what we know will be a resonant, riveting film.”
Jodie just won the Leading Actress BAFTA TV gong for her performance in ‘Help’, while her co-star Cathy Tyson claimed the Supporting Actress accolade.

Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice are planning more TV projects together

OHMYGOSSIP — Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice are looking to work together again after their ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ success.
The duo – who won the glitterball trophy on the BBC’s Latin and ballroom show last year – won a BAFTA for the must-see moment of 2021 after their emotional silent dance, and they have some plans in the pipeline for future TV projects.
As quoted by the Daily Star newspaper’s Hot TV column, Giovanni said: “Our friendship and relationship goes beyond dance.
“We are definitely going to be working together again.”
In the meantime, the ‘Strictly’ pro is waiting to find out who will be partnered with on the new series later this year.
Rose admitted she’ll be keeping a close eye on Giovanni and his new partner, although it won’t be out of jealousy.
She admitted: “I’ll be saying, ‘You need to improve.’ ”
The dancer added: “She will be the one who will always criticise, ‘Oh, your partner’s position wasn’t great.’ ”
Meanwhile, he ruled out the idea of quitting ‘Strictly’ after the shock departures of big names like Kevin Clifton and Aljaz Skorjanec.
He explained: “It’s not in my DNA to leave. I’m Italian, very competitive. As you say, let’s bring the next challenge.”
On Sunday (08.05.22), the pair were presented with their BAFTA by former Saturdays singer Rochelle Humes and – using British Sign Language – Rose explained she was so “proud” of her achievements and noted how “powerful” TV can be for change.
She said: “It made me feel so proud. It made me quite emotional because deaf people have been fighting for access and for their rights, and in the last few months so much has changed, more than it has in years.
“The fact that it’s happening – that’s how powerful TV can be.”

‘Hollyoaks’ star Abi Phillips diagnosed with thyroid cancer

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Hollyoaks’ star Abi Phillips has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
The 28-year-old actress – who plays Liberty Savage in the Channel 4 soap – took to Instagram to share her shocking news after she got two lumps in her neck tested.
Alongside selfies of herself wearing a hospital gown, face mask and a bandage over her throat, Abi wrote: “So, I took these pictures before my scans and after my biopsy having a good old laugh about how ridiculously dressed up I looked in the hospital before a gig, not expecting for one moment to get the news that I did two weeks later.”
Abi revealed she had previously gone to the doctors to get the lumps examined, but was told there was nothing wrong, and she wanted to get a second opinion for “peace of mind”.
She continued: “I’d previously been sent away from the doctors after having found two lumps in my neck, they’d passed it off and said I was ‘young’ and it wouldn’t be anything and I was ‘probably getting over a cold’ or my body was ‘fighting something off’.
“As much as that’s what I wanted to hear I wanted to get everything checked for my own peace of mind.”
After meeting with a specialist, Abi was told they were a cause for concern and that she required surgery and radiotherapy.
The soap star is thankful to ‘Love Island’ star Demi Jones – who underwent a full thyroidectomy after being diagnosed in May 2021 – for showing her social media followers where her lumps were as Abi’s were in the same spot.
She shared: “I booked in with a specialist and immediately she told me she was very concerned due to where my lumps were located and referred me for an urgent biopsy and scans.
“Fast forward two weeks and just before Easter weekend I had an appointment to see a consultant at the QE hospital who sat me down and told me that I had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and that I would need surgery and radiotherapy treatment.
“I never thought I would be told that I have cancer at the age of 28, you never think it’s going to happen to you. I wouldn’t have taken things further with seeing a specialist if I hadn’t seen @demijones1 post as her lumps were in the exact same place as mine.”
Abi is set to have surgery in the coming days, and has urged everyone to get checked out if they spot anything “unusual” on their bodies.
She added: “If ever you find a lump or something unusual on your body, never just think it’s nothing, don’t be told that you’re fine by the GP and you’re ‘young’, always get things checked out by a specialist if you can and insist on tests even if it turns out to be nothing, as catching things early is crucial for a good prognosis.
“This time next week I’ll be on the road to recovery after my operation.”

Colin Murray ‘set to replace’ Anne Robinson on Countdown

OHMYGOSSIP — Colin Murray is reportedly set to replace Anne Robinson on ‘Countdown’.
The 43-year-old presenter – who previously guest hosted 33 episodes in 2021 with Nick Hewer had to shield during the pandemic – is said to have started filing episodes of the Channel 4 quiz show this week following Anne’s sudden exit last week after a year in the role.
A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “Colin has agreed to be a stand-in host for us, which is brilliant news.
“He knows the team and gets on really well with Rachel, they are good friends off screen.
“No one knows what is going to happen beyond the autumn in terms of hosting, but if Colin does want the job, he is in the right place to show why he should get it.”
If Colin does end up landing the job on a permanent basis, he will follow an illustrious list of presenters including Richard Whiteley, Des Lynam, Des O’Connor, Jeff Stelling, Nick and Anne.
Meanwhile, recent reports suggested Carol Vorderman – who was in charge of the letters and numbers on the show, the same job Rachel Riley does now – is wanted back on ‘Countdown’ to replace the departing host.
The 61-year-old star has said it would be “an honour” to return to the programme, but she appeared to distance herself from a return to the programme full-time, wishing the person who replaces Anne “all the love”.
Anne – who became the first woman to take the helm when she took on the role last year – confirmed she quit the show because she wants to “enjoy” spending more time with her grandchildren and at her New York apartment.
She said: “I have had a blast – we have taken the ratings up and transformed the guests too.
“We no longer have northern newsreaders in Dictionary Corner – we have had a raft of top celebrities.
“But I have made up my mind to quit the show. I only signed on for a year and I have helped them out by doing about 40 shows more than my contract.
“I am moving on because I’ve got a lot going on – grandchildren, a big garden, an apartment in New York – and I want to enjoy them. ‘Countdown’ has taken up more of time than I thought it would.”

Eurovision host Graham Norton hails Sam Ryder as UK’s ‘best hope for years’

OHMYGOSSIP — Graham Norton thinks Sam Ryder is the UK’s “best hope for years” in the ‘Eurovision Song Contest’.
The TikTok star will be performing his track ‘Space Man’ as he represents the nation at the grand finals in Turin on May 14, and BBC host suggested he could get more than 2021’s ‘nil points’.
He said: “Sam Ryder is a star! I honestly think he is our best hope for years.
“He has been getting a great response around Europe as he promotes Spaceman, so fingers crossed for some points this year!”
However, he suggested Italy could make it two wins in a row and provide some tough competition for the other countries.
The host nation will be represented by Mahmood and Blanco and their track ‘Brividi’.
Graham added: “I really think Italy might do that rarest of things and walk away triumphant for the second year in a row. That song is huge!”
Meanwhile, Sam admitted he has picked the brain of some of the UK’s previois entrants into the competition.
He explained: “I’m friends with a couple of the previous UK entrants and they are amazing, talented musicians in their own right and lovely people.
“So of course they gave me some tips and pointers and the main thing that keeps coming back is to just enjoy every moment of it, because it’s such a wonderful circus being a part of Eurovision and it’s unlike anything else in the world that you can do.
“So I’m trying my best like I said at the beginning, to stay focused and present and not getting too overwhelmed by the nerves. So that I can breathe in every moment.”
Back in 2021, the UK ended up at the bottom of the leader board after James Newman’s entry ‘Embers’ scored zero points . whilst Michael Rice’s 2019 entry ‘Bigger Than Us’ also saw the UK finish last but Sam previously insisted that the “stigma” of losing will not stop his enjoyment of taking part.
He said: “I love Eurovision. I think it’s such a privilege to be able to do. I don’t want to let the stigma or fear of coming at a certain place in a table stop me from doing something and being a part of something that I enjoy so much.”
The grand final of ‘The Eurovision Song Contest’ will air on Saturday, May 14 at 8pm on BBC One.

James Franco cast in Mace

OHMYGOSSIP — James Franco has been cast in ‘Mace’.
The 44-year-old actor will feature in the action thriller from ‘The Singing Detective’ director Jon Amiel.
The movie follows two very different police officers. Mace (Franco) is a veteran officer who is corrupt and dangerously unhinged while Virgil Woods is a young rookie who is convinced that he can change the system that fosters cops like Mace from within.
Inspired by the racial injustice in the US, Woods refuses to be bullied and pits his principles against Mace – risking everything he believes in to stop Mace from destroying the city when he unleashes a gang war to cover up his crimes.
The film is in pre-production and is set to begin shooting later this year in New Jersey. Amiel is directing from a script by David Chisholm with Lawrence Steven Meyers, Randy Dannenberg and John Evangelides will produce.
Myriad Pictures is launching worldwide sales on the project at the Cannes market next week.
The company’s CEO Kirk D’Amico said in a statement: “We are thrilled to be returning to Cannes with this highly original and unique film.
“It is a gritty story set in a modern-day police department where nothing is as it seems. We think that this material in the hands of such an experienced director as Jon Amiel will yield extraordinary results.”
Meanwhile, James recalled how jealousy was the reason that he got into acting, as he joined his school’s drama class when the girl he was dating was asked to star in someone else’s romantic one-act.
The ‘Pineapple Express’ star said: “It was this romantic piece, and they were gonna make out in it. And I got really jealous, and I begged her not to do it. But she did it anyway, as she should have. I realise in hindsight that I was jealous probably more because he had constructed this whole thing and he’d written it and directed it and was acting in it – it was, like, all the things that I wanted to do. And so as my revenge, I decided that I would join the drama class.”

Halle Berry starring in thriller Mother Land

OHMYGOSSIP — Halle Berry is to star in the thriller ‘Mother Land’.
The 55-year-old actress has boarded the cast of the Lionsgate movie, which will launch international sales at the Cannes market next week.
Alexandre Aja – whose previous credits ‘The Hills Have Eyes’ and ‘Piranha 3D’ – is directing the film, which is set to go into production next year.
The movie will chart the story of a mother and her twin sons who have been tormented by an evil spirit for years. When one of the boys questions whether it is real – the family’s sacred bond is broken and they face a fight for survival.
Aja will produce the film alongside Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Dan Levine for 21 Laps. Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby have penned the script with Halle and Holly Jeter as executive producers.
Lionsgate’s Production President Erin Westerman said: “We’re so thrilled to be working again with Halle and Alex. Halle is a force on screen – she’s the perfect person to convey the psychological terror of this mother trying to protect her family.
“And who better than Alex to ratchet up the tension. Powerhouse producers 21 Laps are going to deliver an elevated thriller that will keep audiences on the edge of their seat.”
Halle made her directorial debut last year in the movie ‘Bruised’, which she also starred in, and revealed she “definitely” wants to get behind the camera on another film.
The Oscar-winning star said: “I am going to get behind the camera again. I can’t tell you what I’m doing for sure, for sure yet, but I definitely want to do it again.
“And I definitely will not act in it this time. Directing is large enough.”

AJ Pritchard didn’t admit he was struggling after girlfriend’s horrific accident

OHMYGOSSIP — AJ Pritchard didn’t admit he was struggling after his girlfriend’s horrific fireball accident.
The former ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ star’s partner Abbie Quinnen set her hair and clothing alight after a stunt intended for social media went wrong, and she subsequently needed three skin grafts and 20 hospital visits.
Speaking to his brother Curtis for Zizzi’s ‘In Conversation With…’ series as part of Mental Health Awareness Week, AJ said: “With the pandemic, I was isolating with Abbie and obviously the accident happened and it meant that we couldn’t have people come into the house to help.
“For me, it was like, I couldn’t that I wasn’t feeling OK because it wasn’t about me, it was about caring for somebody else and becoming a full-time career.”
Once things got easier at home, he admitted he still tried to “just with with it” himself before finding a way to open up.
He added: “I was like, ‘I’m a man, I’m not gonna ask for [help], everything’s fine, I can keep going, I’ll just deal with it in my own way’. But actually, trapping it down and holding it down is actually the worst possible thing.
“Having to talk to somebody about a situation that was a very traumatic situation was the only thing that released that burden.”
And Curtis urged people to be open to therapy, noting that it doesn’t mean “something’s wrong”.
He explained: “I always say we’re like volcanoes. Whatever it is – happy emotions, sad emotions, loneliness – if you’re pushing it down, there’s only one way that’s gonna go and it’s gonna erupt out of you one day.
“Therapy’s a great thing. People say, ‘I’ll never go to therapy because I feel like something’s wrong’. No, you’re learning about yourself and it’s a great way to release and talk about things in a judgement-free zone.”
AJ also reflected on the difficulties of life in the spotlight, particularly when it comes to being in a routine of working on – and then promoting – projects.
He added: “You tell yourself you’re fine where sometimes you – no, I kind of need a day to sit down and talk to family, or do something that’s silly or come to a restaurant I enjoy and just eat food and not think about anything.”
The Zizzi series ‘In Conversations With’ includes three episodes and will be housed on both Zizzi’s and the Mental Health Foundation’s websites and social media channels

Boris Becker at centre of bidding war for tell-all documentary about his life

OHMYGOSSIP — Boris Becker is reportedly at the centre of a bidding war for a tell-all documentary about his life.
The 54-year-old tennis legend – who was found guilty of four charges under the Insolvency Act by a jury at Southwark Crown Court at the end of April and sentenced to two years and six months in prison – is said to have filmed a documentary in which he can be seen packing to spend time behind bars , and streaming platforms are said to be at war to snap up a piece of “must watch TV”.
A source told The Sun newspaper’s TV Biz column: “There has been a lot of interest from streaming services keen to secure the rights. It will be must-watch TV!”
The film is being made by Oscar-winning directors Alex Gibney and John Battsek and produced by Lorton Entertainment, who were behind Wayne Rooney’s documentary ‘Rooney’ on Amazon Prime.
Director John said: “His life off the court trying to manage his private relationships and his spiralling financial commitments has become the stuff of gossip and falsehoods.
“Boris has been incredibly brave revealing all to us. Alex and I share a big responsibility in making this film.”
The documentary is also said to feature features conversations with fellow tennis stars including John McEnnroe and Bjorn Borg,
Becker had been accused of hiding millions of pounds worth of assets, including two of his Wimbledon trophies, to avoid paying off his debts.
The star – who has lived in Britain for the past decade – had described how he was “shocked” and “embarrassed” after being declared bankrupt in 2017 over an unpaid loan of over £3 million on his estate on the Spanish island of Mallorca.
Becker claimed that he was left in financial difficulty after a costly divorce from his first wife Barbara Becker, which he says cost him around £38 million of his career earnings.
But the court heard how he received around 1.13 million euros (£950,000) from the sale of a Mercedes dealership he owned in Germany – which was paid into a business account described as a “piggy bank” used for personal expenses.
The BBC tennis pundit also transferred hundreds of thousands of pounds to other accounts including his ex-wife Barbara and estranged wife Sharlely ‘Lily’ Becker and prosecutor Rebecca Chalkley told jurors that Becker had given bankruptcy officials “the runaround”.

Benedict Wong describes Marvel role as ‘bizarre’

OHMYGOSSIP — Benedict Wong finds it “bizarre” that he is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The 50-year-old actor reprises his role as Wong in the new blockbuster ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ and admits it is surreal to be a part of the Marvel world as he has collected the comics since he was a child.
Benedict told Variety: “It’s been a wonderful 30-year overnight career. It’s been six years since ‘Doctor Strange’ started, and to start from the very beginning to play this character Wong has been amazing for me.
“I’ve been collecting these comics since I was a kid, and the ‘Spider-Man’ comics, all three of them. To find myself in the MCU has really been bizarre. I don’t know whether something has been manifested along the way, so I’m grateful for it.”
Benedict also revealed how he and Marvel boss Kevin Feige changed the character who is both a mentor and friend to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Dr. Stephen Strange.
He recalled: “When I first embarked on the role, we looked at the old source material and it needed an update.
“I remember my opening gambit when I was in the trailer and waiting to meet with Kevin and producer Stephen Broussard, and was vehemently not into doing what was in the old source material. And thankfully, neither were they.”
The ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ star continued: “This character has progressed now, and I found out when (director) Sam Raimi was on a conference call and talking me through the story. Here was this legend.
“He said, ‘Of course, you’re going to be the Sorcerer Supreme’, and as this geek, it’s so great what they’ve done with the character and how he stands toe-to-toe with Doctor Strange.”

Ryan Gosling wants The Gray Man to start a franchise

OHMYGOSSIP — Ryan Gosling hopes ‘The Gray Man’ launches a franchise.
The 41-year-old star features in the big-budget Netflix movie as the CIA’s most skilled mercenary who operates under the alias Sierra Six and explains that he already wants to make more films.
Speaking to Empire magazine, Ryan said: “I loved making this film. I’d love to do it again. I’m hoping we can bump Six up to a name status at some point, just for his own sanity.”
Ryan is selective about which roles he takes on and revealed he was drawn to the project as his character is a spy who wasn’t on any kind of mission – although he finds himself with a price on his head and hunted by international assassins when he uncovers some dark secrets.
The ‘La La Land’ actor said: “His goals aren’t monetary, it’s not about treasure, it’s not revenge. He just wants to have the right to sit on the couch and watch Netflix like the rest of us.”
Gosling also praised how the makers of the film – which also stars Chris Evans, Ana de Armas and Rege-Jean Page – were able to blend both action and humour together.
He explained: “In almost every scene, we tried to set it up so that he was at a disadvantage. And it becomes about watching him use whatever is in his environment to gain leverage.
“And what he uses most consistently is a sense of humour. It’s a survival tool. If he can find what’s funny about the absurdity of the situation, he can distance himself from the danger of it.”

Lydia West was never in the running for Doctor Who role

OHMYGOSSIP — Lydia West was never in the running for ‘Doctor Who’.
The 28-year-old actress had been long-rumoured to be taking on the role of the titular Time Lord on the BBC sci-fi series, but she’s claimed she was never under consideration and is “so happy” that Ncuti Gatwa will be taking control of the TARDIS after Jodie Whittaker exits later this year.
Asked whether she had was ever in the running to play The Doctor, she told RadioTimes.com: “I wasn’t, no. I was not. But I’m so happy for Ncuti.
“I think he’s absolutely brilliant. I can’t wait to see it. Whatever Russell touches, it’s just amazing, as we know.
“I think Ncuti’s brilliant, he’s just the perfect successor, so I’m thrilled.”
Other stars rumoured to be taking on the iconic part included pop star Olly Alexander, and current Doctor Jodie had even admitted she would like ‘It’s a Sin’ actress Lydia to take over.
After much speculation, it was announced on Sunday (08.05.22) that ‘Sex Education’ actor Ncuti will be playing the 14th Doctor.
He said: “There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared.
“This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my utmost to do the same.”
Ncuti also explained that while he just wants to bring “himself” to the role, he is unsure of how he will follow in the footsteps of his predecessors like David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi.
Asked what he would bring to the role, he added: “Just myself, I think actors are incredible people that put so much of themselves into roles and so each one is going to be really different.
“Each Doctor that’s gone before has been so incredibly talented and so incredibly brilliant, I don’t know how I’m going to follow in their footsteps but I’m going to try my best!”
