Blonde author Joyce Carol Oates hails movie adaptation

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Blonde’ author Joyce Carol Oates has praised the new movie adaptation.
Ana de Armas stars as Norma Jeane Baker/Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik’s take on Oates’ 2000 novel – which reimagines the life of the tragic Hollywood star – and is impressed with Dominik’s film.
Speaking at the Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland, Joyce said: “Andrew Dominik is a very brilliant director. I think he succeeded in showing the experience of Norma Jeane Baker from her perspective, rather than see it from the outside, the male gaze looking at a woman. He immersed himself in her perspective.”
Oates also praised Ana’s portrayal of the Hollywood icon, particularly as she spent several hours transforming her look to resemble Marilyn for the Netflix movie.
The author said: “Transforming into Marilyn always took (Baker) hours. Ana de Armas, the wonderful actress who plays her, I think it took her like four hours of makeup.
“So when you see them on the screen, they don’t really exist. It’s like a fantastic image, but to make it a livelihood is to endure a good deal of anguish.”
De Armas previously revealed that she wore a bald cap to conceal her brunette locks during filming and was moved to tears when she saw her character’s wigs for the first time.
The 34-year-old star explained: “(Marilyn) went through different shades of blonde from golden to really platinum, so for these wigs that are beautifully made, you can’t have anything dark underneath, so we had to make a bald cap every single day from my forehead to (around) my whole head.
“I think I actually cried the first time I saw (the wigs) on. Probably because I was terrified. But I’m so proud.”
The ‘Knives Out’ actress also described how she left her brain “fried” by spending nine months training with a dialect coach to perfect Marilyn’s voice.
Ana said: “It was a big torture, so exhausting. My brain was fried.”

The Control Room writer Nick Leather inspired by terrifying experience with his daughter

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘The Control Room’ writer Nick Leather was inspired by the terrifying moment he couldn’t wake his daughter up.
The ‘Murdered For Being Different’ scribe has opened up on his upcoming thriller – which was shot in Glasgow last year and stars Iain De Caestecker as emergency call handler Gabe – and the scary experience that sparked the story.
He said: “One morning, I went in to wake my daughter up and I couldn’t; she was just floppy. We called 999 and in that desperate few minutes, I realised sort of how profoundly the person on the other end of the line can help you and affect you.
“Their manner is so important and its quite an intense relationship for a few minutes. Everything was okay in the end but then the next time I sat down and tried to come up with a story, I wrote two things at the top; one was call room handler and caller.
“I then put a circle around it and tried to think of the way the relationship between those two people would be and a scene that involved them both.”
The show has been described by those involved as a mix of genres including thriller, coming-of-age and even a “love story”.
Iain added: “I would say it’s one of the most exciting scripts I’ve ever read and it was a page turner from start to finish. I just had to know how it ended.
“Nick [Leather] has a way of using very relatable and universal themes and emotions. The characters are not two dimensional.”
And he heaped praise on the writer for creating something exciting with “a more sensitive side” too.
He explained: “Nick is a master writer of suspense and it leaves you on the edge of your seat. It’s nail biting but it has a more sensitive side as well.”

Jordan Peele thinks Nope ‘transcends’ horror genre

OHMYGOSSIP — Jordan Peele believes that ‘Nope’ “transcends the horror genre”.
The 43-year-old director has reunited with star Daniel Kaluuya for his latest horror flick and has billed the project as “a great American UFO horror movie that I haven’t seen”.
Jordan told Essence magazine: “I think one of the things we have with this film is a movie that transcends the horror genre, in a way.
“The first film clip (Eadweard Muybridge’s Animal Locomotion) was essentially a black man on a horse who has been forgotten and erased. Part of this film, to me, is a celebration and response to that. We can be the leads not only of a horror movie but also action, adventure, comedy, etc.”
Peele has enjoyed success directing horror films such as ‘Get Out’ and ‘Us’ but he wanted his latest effort to be more than just “black horror”.
The filmmaker explained: “It’s so tricky being considered in the vanguard of black horror, because obviously black horror is so very real, and it’s hard to do it in a way that’s not re-traumatising and sad.
“I was going into my third horror film starring black leads, and somewhere in the process I realised that the movie had to be about black joy as well, in order to fit what the world needs at this moment.
“So that is part of why there’s sort of a spectrum of tonality of genre in here, because I wanted to give the horror, but I also wanted to give our characters agency and adventure and hope and joy and fun that they deserve.”
‘Nope’ follows two siblings (played by Kaluuya and Keke Palmer) and the former praised the director for “expanding” the horror genre once again with his latest project.
The Oscar-winning actor said: “I love pushing the envelope. We’re in a creative industry, but people will sometimes handle this like they’re working in a bank. It’s nuts to me. Let’s go – let’s create.
“I don’t like hearing, ‘Oh, I’ve never seen that before.’ That’s the point. That’s why people watch films. So it was amazing to be the centre of something that I used to love watching as a kid as well.”

Jacques O’Neill quits ‘Love Island’ after row over Adam Collard

OHMYGOSSIP — Jacques O’Neill has quit ‘Love Island’.
The 23-year-old rugby player will reveal why he decided to walk away from the ITV2 dating show on Tuesday night’s (12.07.22) episode, show bosses said.
He was left raging on Monday’s (11.07.22) episode after he learned new bombshell Adam Collard, 26, had been “slagging him off” behind his back.
A preview clip of Tuesday’s instalment shows Jacques going for a chat with Paige Thorne, 24, after Gemma Owen, 19, told him: “He (Adam) has been proper slagging you off.”
Speaking to Paige in the garden, he ranted: “Has Adam been slagging me off? Who the f*** is he? He’s just another geezer who’s already been on the show. He’s f****** nothing mate.”
It was confirmed on Tuesday afternoon Jacques would be leaving the show.
A show spokesperson said: “Jacques has made the decision to leave the Villa. He will explain his reasons to the Islanders during tonight’s episode. We fully support his decision and look forward to seeing what’s next for Jacques.”
Jacques had been struggling to win back Paige after he kissed Cheyanne at Casa Amor before deciding to stick with his original partner.
He added he would leave the show if she didn’t forgive him, hinting his attempts to win her back had not gone as he planned.
The rugby player was seen being challenged when he came through Casa Amor single after kissing new girl, 23-year-old Cheyanne Kerr.
Paige was originally pleased to see him single, but less impressed when Cheyanne revealed they had kissed and shared a bed.
She said: “I mentioned to Paige afterwards it wasn’t personal, I just wanted her to know what he’s like.”
Jacques was shown telling 23-year-old Luca Bish: “No point me being here.”
Luca replied: “Mate, she’s going to forgive you,” prompting Jacques to tearfully reply: “I won’t let her forgive me.”
Liberty Poole, 22, and Jake Cornish, 25, last year decided to leave the show after opting not to contest the final while their relationship was on the rocks.
‘Love Island’ airs at 9pm weekdays and Sundays on ITV2 and ITV Hub. Episodes are available the following morning on BritBox.
The dating reality show can be seen in Ireland on Virgin Media Two and Virgin Media Player.

Faye Brookes splits from personal trainer boyfriend Joe Davies

OHMYGOSSIP — Faye Brookes has split from her personal trainer boyfriend Joe Davies.
The former ‘Coronation Street’ actress, 34, admitted they had “sadly” decided to break up after “wonderful” times together.
She said on Twitter on Tuesday (12.07.22): “Just wanted to say that, very sadly, after nearly three years Joe and I have decided to go our separate ways.
“We had the most wonderful of times, and our mutual respect, admiration and friendship remains stronger than ever.”
She signed off her message with a heart emoji.
It comes weeks after Brookes was spotted holidaying in Mykonos, Greece, with Davies, a personal trainer with ‘Barry’s Boot Camp’.
The couple went public in December 2019, sharing workout posts on Instagram and later a couples’ snap.
Brookes previously dated singer Gareth Gates, 38, and they were engaged before splitting in August 2019 after spending seven years dating on and off.
Gates was said to be “heartbroken” by the break up, before going on to a relationship with DJ Chloe McLennan.
It was said Brookes and Gates had a row after she began having late-night gym sessions and he confronted her about her relationship with Davies.
A source close to the singer added at the time: “Poor Gareth is absolutely heartbroken. He’s in pieces. “Towards the end of their relationship, Faye started having late night gym sessions and saying she was out with new gym pals… they had a blazing row, and Gareth confronted Faye about Joe. He felt something wasn’t right, though she insisted they were friends.”
‘Pop Idol’ runner-up Gates and Brookes, who played Kate Connor on ‘Coronation Street’, met when they appeared in ‘Legally Blonde’ in 2012, and went public with their relationship in August 2013.
Brookes is said to have isolated at Davies’ parents’ seaside home through the UK’s first Covid lockdown.

Gary Lineker still BBC’s highest earning presenter with £1.35 million pay packet

OHMYGOSSIP — Gary Lineker is still the BBC’s highest earning presenter, getting £1.35 million last year.
The 61-year-old football pundit remained at the top of the corporation’s list of best-paid staff after he saw his wage drop on the previous year from £1.36 million – after he voluntarily took a pay cut from £1.75 million in 2020.
He first topped the list of the BBC’s highest earners in 2017/18 with his pay bracket of £1,750,000 to £1,759,999.
Zoe Ball, 51, is also still the broadcaster’s second highest rewarded on-air talent, with a salary of £980,000 to £984,999.
Figures released on Tuesday (12.07.22) also showed the Radio 2 host’s salary falling for a second consecutive year.
One of Gary’s colleagues Alan Shearer, 51, has seen a year-on-year increase of £60,000, bringing his latest salary to £450,000-£454,999.
It puts him joint third with DJ Steve Wright, 67, whose salary this year had a £15,000 decrease.
The wages are contained in the BBC’s annual report for 2021/22, which shows four out of the top 10 best paid names have seen their salaries fall.
Among those who got a pay rise was Radio 1 DJ Greg James, 36, whose salary increased £80,000.
He now earns between £390,000 and £394,999 for work including the ‘Radio 1 Breakfast Show,’ ‘Rewinder’ on Radio 4, ‘Radio 1’s Big Weekend’ and ‘Out Out! Live’.
Other large salary increases included one for BBC breakfast host Naga Munchetty, 47, who got a £110,000 rise.
The corporation’s media editor Amol Rajan, 39, had an increase of £85,000, while Victoria Derbyshire, 53, saw her salary go up £70,000.
The number of women on this year’s top earner’s list is lower than in the previous 12 months, going from four to three.
Lauren Laverne, 44, does not feature in this year’s top 10 as her wage fell by £15,000 to the £380,000–£384,999 bracket.
Newly married Graham Norton, 59, is also absent from the list after departing Radio 2 in December 2020 to start a show at Virgin Radio.
It comes after the BBC suffered several departures of high-profile names from its presenting line-up, including Emily Maitlis, 51, Andrew Marr, 62, and 45-year-old former ‘BBC Breakfast’ host Dan Walker, who left for Channel 5.

Naked Attraction stars ‘take matters into their own hands’ in cold green room

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Naked Attraction’ men have reportedly taken matters into their own hands in the cold green room.
The nude Channel 4 dating show sees contestants bare it all in the hope of finding a partner, but it’s said some people have complained that the green room – where they wait before heading out onto the studio floor – is a bit too chilly, leaving them feeling a little shy.
A source told The Sun newspaper’s TV Biz column: “The whole point of ‘Naked Attraction’ is that your body is the thing that attracts a potential partner.
“So the men have had to give themselves a little ‘fluff’ while they’re in the cold room just so they’re as enhanced as they can be without being entirely indecent.
“Though obviously this somewhat desperate measure has raised a few eyebrows among crew when they’ve seen it in action.”
It’s said show bosses claim the green room is kept at an “optimum” temperature of 21 degrees Celsius.
The show – which has been hosted by Anna Richardson since its launch in 2016 – sees six people strip off and stand in cubicles as their nude bodies are revealed from the feet up, while one person has to eliminate a different contestant after each body part has been revealed until they choose between a final two.
Presenter Anna previously admitted she would love to take the show on the road for a live theatre tour with audience members stripping off on stage.
She said: “I’m desperate to do it as a live theatre show. That would be amazing. A ‘Naked Attraction Live’ is my next ambition.
“Say you were in Bournemouth, you’d have different contestants each night or encourage people from the audience to be in the pods. Wouldn’t it be ace?”
However, an US version isn’t on the cards as she explained producers are facing a “brick wall when it comes to showing penises on US television”.
She added: “It would go down like a cup of sick in the Bible belt.”

Jacques O’Neill quit Love Island as he ‘couldn’t be himself’

OHMYGOSSIP — Jacques O’Neill quit ‘Love Island’ because he “couldn’t be himself”.
The 23-year-old – who kissed other girls during Casa Amor – walked away from the villa after bombshell Adam Collard, 26, set his sights on his 24-year-old partner Paige Thorne, but said he was going to wait for her after leaving.
He broke down in tears on Tuesday night’s (12.07.22) episode of the dating show, telling his co-stars at the fire pit: “Lately, I just can’t be myself. I’m trying my best but I’m not a fake person.
“I’m not going to start faking things and act like I’m OK when things inside aren’t actually OK.
“So I’m going to be leaving today. I just can’t stick around and not be myself. It’s not fair to me and it’s definitely not fair to Paige.
“For me and Paige to work I need to be at my best and if that means removing myself from the situation and waiting for Paige when she gets out, that’s what I’m going to do.”
Jacques had flown into a rage after Gemma Owen, 19, told him Adam had “slagged him off” behind his back.
The rugby player – who dated Gemma for eight months during the COVID pandemic – fumed: “If a boy’s going to chat s*** behind my back, I don’t f****** have it.”
Jacques told Paige after deciding to quit: “I need to get back to myself and the only way I’m going to do that is by going home.
“You mean so much to me, you know that? The past two weeks – things are hard in here, I’m finding it hard. I’m trying to put a brave face on but things are getting to me.
“I want to be with you, like I want you to be my girlfriend. I want that, so I’m going to wait. I’m counting down the days until you get out.”
Paige replied: “I don’t want you to go… obviously, I want you to be happy and it hurts me seeing you this way anyway.”
Jacques also later shook Adam’s hand and said: “It’s all good.”
He was accused of bullying and gaslighting Paige while in the villa, while his family claimed he struggles with emotions due to ADHD.
‘Love Island’ airs at 9pm weekdays and Sundays on ITV2 and ITV Hub.
Episodes are available the following morning on BritBox.
The dating reality show can be seen in Ireland on Virgin Media Two and Virgin Media Player.

James Franco lands lead role in coming of age drama

OHMYGOSSIP — James Franco has landed a lead role in director Bille August’s post-World War II coming-of-age drama ‘Me, You’.
Based on the novel ‘Tu, Mia’ by Erri De Luca, the 1950s-set film follows 16-year-old Marco, who spends his days “sailing in the tranquil waters of the bay of Naples with hardened fisherman Nicola, who beguiles Marco with his wounded tales of the sea and the war following his military service as a US GI”.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Franco will play Nicola in the upcoming drama, alongside ‘The Night Manager’ actor Tom Hollander, 54, as Marco’s father Edward and ‘Everything I Know About Love’ actress Daisy Jacob as Marco’s love interest Caia.
The 44-year-old actor said: “I am excited to board this phenomenal project and to be working with the legendary Bille August. I’m a huge fan of his work, and ‘Me, You’ is a truly brilliant script.”
A synopsis for the film teases: “Deeply tender and bittersweet, ‘Me, You’ explores the raw beauty and tragedy of love, the age of innocence and the bitter realities of war.”
Franco stepped away from acting following a series of sexual misconduct allegations made by multiple women in 2018.
In 2019, students at Franco’s now-closed acting school Studio 4 sued the actor and his partners, accusing them of pushing acting students to perform explicit scenes on camera.
The actor and his partners agreed to pay $2.2 million (£1.7 million) last year to settle the lawsuit.
James last year admitted during an interview on SiriusXM’s ‘The Jess Cagle Podcast’ he slept with students while teaching at the school, saying: “Over the course of my teaching, I did sleep with students, and that was wrong.
“But like I said, it’s not why I started the school and I wasn’t the person that selected the people to be in the class.
“So it wasn’t a ‘master plan’ on my part. But yes, there were certain instances where, you know what, I was in a consensual thing with a student and I shouldn’t have been.”

Finn Wolfhard set to co-write and direct first feature film

OHMYGOSSIP — Finn Wolfhard is set to write and direct his first feature film.
The ‘Stranger Things’ actor – best known for his role is Mike Wheeler in the hit Netflix show – is joining forces with his ‘When You Finish Saving The World’ co-star Billy Bryk for upcoming horror comedy ‘Hell of a Summer’.
The duo will write and direct the movie together, while they will also star in it alongside ‘The White Lotus’ actor Fred Hechinger.
In a statement Wolfhard said: “I am so excited to be co-directing my first feature film.
“I get the chance to work with an incredible cast and crew, and to work with a company like 30West and Aggregate is a real dream.”
The movie will be produced by Hechinger alongside Aggregate Films’ Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan, and Parts and Labor’s Jay Van Hoy, while 30West is fully financing and executive producing.
Principal photographer is set to get underway this month in Ontario Canada, while plot details are being kept under wraps.
Wolfhard, 19, starred as Trevor Spengler in ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ and he previously admitted he was given a lot of freedom with his performance by director Jason Reitman.
Asked what might surprise viewers about the shoot, he said: “A lot of it’s practical, a lot of the effects are practical – the creatures, mostly, except for the flying ghosts are puppets.
“I mean, Jason allowed a crazy leniency when it came to performances, he allowed me to improvise a lot, which was awesome.
His script with Gil Kenan is so good that I almost never did, but when I had an idea I could go up to Jason and talk to him about it, that was pretty amazing.”
Meanwhile, a follow-up is coming in December 2023 as the iconic supernatural film franchise continues, with Reitman at the helm but no casting details as of yet.

Love Island’s Andrew Le Page called bombshell Jazmine Nichol ‘the girl of my dreams’

OHMYGOSSIP — Love Island star Jazmine Nichol has claimed Andrew Le Page called her “the girl of my dreams” during Casa Amor.
The 21-year-old bombshell was among the five female contestants who entered the main villa while the girls were away in Casa Amor and she’s revealed she got close to Andrew – who was coupled Tasha Ghouri at the time – before he decided to recouple with Coco Lodge.
In an interview with blogger Murad Merali posted on YouTube, Jazmine explained she had a strong connection with Andrew right from the start, saying: “I did have a connection with someone and that person was Andrew.
“All the girls knew, from the second we walked in, that he was the one that initially pulled me for a chat.
“He basically told me he manifested us. He said, ‘I’ve manifested you Jaz, you’re the girl of my dreams.'”
She also claimed she kissed Andrew during a challenge which wasn’t aired insisting bosses didn’t “show in the challenge that I was the only person that he went and kissed.”
She added: “He kissed me and Cheyanne (Kerr) and said: ‘Yous are my top two’. Coco was never mentioned.”
Jazmine said things were going well with Andrew and they’d had shared their feelings for each other in an intimate chat just 10 minutes before he kissed Coco on the terrace – and it led to a blazing row.
She went on: “I was shouting at Coco. I’m a girls girl through and through so if you disrespect me when I’ve let you in, it’s kind of like ‘Why did you say I could trust you?'”
Andrew went on to recouple with Coco and Tasha came back from Casa Amor with George, but they later revived their romance in a stunning U-turn.
‘Love Island’ airs at 9pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub. Episodes are available the following morning on BritBox.
The dating reality show can be seen in Ireland on Virgin Media Two and Virgin Media Player.

Nick Grimshaw disappointed by Nigella Lawson’s breakfast offering

OHMYGOSSIP — Nick Grimshaw got excited when Nigella Lawson offered to bring breakfast to the BBC Radio 1 studio – but he was disappointed when the celebrity chef turned up with granola.
The former Radio 1 presenter has revealed he was looking forward to interviewing the cookery guru on his breakfast show because she offered to bring in some treats for the team – and they all skipped their cornflakes as they awaited glorious goodies from the ‘Nigella Bites’ star.
Speaking on his new podcast ‘Dish’ with Angela Hartnett, Nick explained: “Is it expected everywhere you go, though, people think that you’re gonna bring some food. Because I remember on the radio once Nigella came in and we all got dead excited, that Nigella was gonna come in.
“And we spoke about on the radio for a few days before, like, ‘What do you think she’s gonna do?’ And she heard it and messaged in and said, ‘Don’t worry guys, I will bring breakfast.’”
Nick went on to reveal the whole team eagerly awaited her arrival only to be met with disappointment.
He added: “No one ate anything, and we got up at like five, and she came in about half eight, so you’re like starving by then, and she brought in granola. I was like, that’s not enough. Like in a little bag like that, she’s like I got you covered. No bowls, no milk, no spoons.”
‘Dish’, the new podcast from Waitrose Partners hosted by Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett is available on all podcast providers now.

Martin Lawrence thinks another Bad Boys film will be made

OHMYGOSSIP — Martin Lawrence is confident that another ‘Bad Boys’ film will be made.
The 57-year-old actor stars alongside Will Smith in the buddy cop action series and dismissed suggestions that Smith infamously slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars could bring the franchise to an end.
Martin told Ebony: “We got one more at least.”
The original movie – which featured Martin and Will as Miami detectives Marcus Burnett and Mike Lowrey respectively – was released in 1995 and Lawrence felt it had a transformative impact on his career.
He recalled: “It was big.
“For us to come together and prove that we can deliver, and we can pull people into the box office – that two black stars, two sitcom stars, could make the money at the box office (was huge).
“I didn’t go to college, so I felt TV was my college years. I felt with movies, I had graduated; it was just different.”
The series returned to the big screen in 2020 with ‘Bad Boys for Life’ – the follow-up to the original ‘Bad Boys’ and the 2003 sequel ‘Bad Boys II’ – and Martin suggested that Will was responsible for the long wait as he wanted the script to be perfect.
He said: “It took so long because of Will. He wouldn’t do the script unless it was right.”
Will also admitted that he was concerned about the chemistry with his co-star as it had been so long since the previous movie.
He explained: “We haven’t seen each other in a while. The concern was always chemistry because the first two movies we were making stuff up in all of the scenes. Everything we were making up in the scenes was a result of the chemistry. The first time we walked into a room together … it was so perfect.”

Taika Waititi deleted Thor: Love and Thunder scenes as they weren’t up to standard

OHMYGOSSIP — Taika Waititi deleted plenty of scenes from ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ as they “aren’t good enough”.
The 46-year-old director left appearances from Lena Headey, Jeff Goldblum and Peter Dinklage on the cutting room floor and says they were simply not up to standard.
Taika told Insider: “I wrote the thing so when you cut anything it’s a little bit of a challenge to yourself because you’re like, ‘Am I not that good? Should I have seen this coming?’ But every film I’ve done I’ve probably cut the same amount out.
“When you go into the edit you just never know. A scene on its own could be the most funniest thing or intriguing thing, but sometimes those things if you keep them in will just make the movie screech to a halt. So you have to what’s best for the film.”
The filmmaker explained that the actors would understand why their scenes had been given the chop.
Taika said: “And if you ask any of those actors who were cut out – Jeff Goldblum, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage – they all understand how it works.
“They have been in the game long enough. But that’s just the way I look at things.”
Waititi refused to reveal anything about the deleted scenes and insisted that he would not be making them available to watch.
The ‘Jojo Rabbit’ director said: “I’m not going to give you a moment because this is my of telling you, like, people say, ‘I can’t wait for the deleted scenes with those actors.’
“I don’t want people to see the deleted scenes because they’re deleted for a reason: They aren’t good enough. The scenes were not in the movie and that’s it.”
