Love Island’s Luca Bish eyes move to Chester to be near Gemma Owen

OHMYGOSSIP — Luca Bish is planning to move to Chester to make a go of things with Gemma Owen.
The pair just came second on ITV2 dating show ‘Love Island’, and the 23-year-old fishmonger has revealed his plans to leave his native Brighton to live more than 200 miles away to be near to the 19-year-old daughter of retired football legend Michael Owen.
Even though the pair are not officially boyfriend and girlfriend, Luca is already talking about getting a place with the dressage rider in the future.
As quoted by OK.co.uk, he said: “There is no middle ground – it’s Chester or nothing!
“I’m happy to go wherever she wants me to go. I haven’t got too many commitments back home so it’s easier for me to move. Whatever makes us happy and whatever is right we’ll do. Hopefully if I move near her, in time we’ll get a place together.”
He added: “Just to be near her family I’ll love. Hearing stories about her barbecues and stuff like that, I’m quite excited and I feel like I’ll fit right in.”
Gemma admitted Luca will need to get the seal of approval of her beloved horse, Sirius
She quipped: “Luca needs to impress Sirius. If Sirius doesn’t like Luca then it’s pretty much game over! You’ve heard a lot about him haven’t you?”
Luca joked back: “Yeah. Apparently I’ve got to get in the stables with him straight away and see how I react … to a massive horse!
“I’m sure I’ll feel fine!”
On a serious note, Luca needs to win over Gemma’s mother Louise.
She added: “If my mum was like ‘absolutely not’ then yeah I think that would be the end of it.”
And it’s looking promising so far.
Gemma added: “I haven’t had a chance to speak to her properly but from the small bits I’ve heard, she’s really happy and likes him.”

Jodie Prenger is ‘so glad’ she didn’t have to audition for Coronation Street

OHMYGOSSIP — Jodie Prenger didn’t have to audition for her role on ‘Coronation Street.’
The 43-year-old actress – who won Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical talent search ‘I’d Do Anything’ back in 2008 and as a result played the role of Nancy in a West End production of ‘Oliver!’ – has now been cast as cruise ship singer Glenda Shuttleworth on the ITV soap opera but admitted she was “glad” to have just been offered the part because she “can’t do auditions.”
She said: “There was always murmur about it. I did a play called ‘Hushabye Mountain’ by the amazing [‘Corrie’ scriptwriter] Jonathan Harvey – I love that man. And it got talked about then. But I’m so glad that this is the one job I didn’t have to audition for because I can’t do auditions.”
The Blackpool-born star – who since beating Jessie Buckley to the role of Nancy on the BBC series has gone onto further stage success with leading roles in shows such as ‘Calamity Jane’, ‘Shirley Valentine’ and ‘A Taste of Honey’ – went on to recall one particular audition that went awry because she couldn’t pick up the accent.
Speaking on ITV’s ‘Loose Women’ , she said: “When you really want something, it’s weird. One audition I went for, the writer asked me to come in for it and I really wanted it. It was for a brilliant comedy. No word of a lie – the writer said ‘Can you do a Birmingham accent?’ and I said ‘Yeah, of course!’. I got into the audition and I went to Skegness, Japan and I think I went via Australia as well. It was awful and I never got to Birmingham!”
Jodie’s first scenes as Glenda – who is the sister of established character George Shuttleworth – are set to air on Friday 5 August at 8pm.

Selena Gomez in final talks to produce Working Girl reboot

OHMYGOSSIP — Selena Gomez is in talks to produce a reboot of the 1980s rom-com classic ‘Working Girl’.
According to Deadline, the ‘Only Murders in the Building’ star is in final negotiations to revive the 1988 Mike Nichols flick, which starred Melanie Griffith, Harrison Ford and Sigourney Weaver.
The critically-acclaimed blockbuster told the tale of Tess McGill (Melanie Griffith), a secretary whose idea is stolen by her boss, only for her to steal it back by pretending she has her boss’ job.
The screenplay is being adapted by Ilana Pena, who is known for her work on Disney+’s ‘Diary of a Future President’.
It’s reported that the reboot could be released on Hulu.
At the time of writing, there is no director attached or cast.
It’s not known if the 30-year-old singer-and-actress will have a role in the film as well as producing.
Selena started her career on kids TV series ‘Barney and Friends’ before starring in Disney’s ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ and she recently admitted it was “frustrating” when she later attempted to move into grown-up acting roles.
She said: “I felt like it was very difficult for people to take me seriously. I have slowly pushed through that, and I’m really glad, but it was very frustrating. I felt like a joke, you know?”
Selena made the move from child star after ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ ended in 2012 and one of her first breakout roles was in crime drama ‘Spring Breakers’ opposite another former Disney star Vanessa Hudgens.
She has since been able to carve out a career for herself post-Disney and her most recent project is Hulu TV series ‘Only Murders In The Building’, in which she plays Mabel Mora.
Selena also previously served as executive producer of the Netflix teen drama ’13 Reasons Why’.

Batgirl scrapped by Warner Bros

OHMYGOSSIP — Warner Bros has scrapped ‘Batgirl’.
Although the movie – starring Leslie Grace as the titular heroine – has completed shooting, Warner Bros reportedly made the decision to scrap it after it was received poorly by test audiences.
A source told The New York Post’s Page Six: “They think an unspeakable ‘Batgirl’ is going to be irredeemable.”
However, Warner Bros has blamed the cancellation on a “strategic shift” in leadership, which also saw ‘Scoob! Holiday Haunt’ axed.
A Warner Bros. spokesperson said in a statement: “The decision to not release ‘Batgirl’ reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max. Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance. We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers of ‘Batgirl’ and ‘Scoob! Holiday Haunt’ and their respective casts and we hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future.”
Along with ‘In The Heights’ actress Leslie, 27, in the titular role, ‘Batgirl’, directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, had a star-studded cast, including J.K. Simmons, Brendan Fraser and Michael Keaton in a return to the role of Batman.
‘Batgirl’ was initially set to be a HBO Max release, and was being considered for theatrical distribution.
Speaking previously about his role as Commissioner James Gordon in ‘Batgirl’, Simmons, 67, called the movie a “treat” and indicated that would will be plenty of “domestic” scenes with his on-screen daughter Barbara Gordon/Batgirl.
Simmons told Collider: “‘Batgirl’ was a treat, for a number of reasons. My little bit in ‘Justice League’ was, at the time, meant to be, ‘Look, we’re gonna introduce this guy and we’re gonna see more of him in the future.’ I didn’t have a whole lot to do.
“In ‘Batgirl’, because of the relationship between Commissioner Gordon and his daughter, it’s much more of a domestic aspect of Jim Gordon. We do get to see some fun, out in the street… Well, I’m gonna stop now because I really don’t wanna do any spoilers.
“But it was fun to the stuff with Leslie Grace, who plays Batgirl, and get to portray a different aspect of Jim Gordon, other than as Commissioner Gordon.”

Gwrych Castle thanks ITV for ‘honour’ of hosting I’m A Celebrity

OHMYGOSSIP — Gwrych Castle has thanked ITV for the “honour” of hosting ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’, after it was confirmed the show will return to Australia this year.
The reality show has been set in the Welsh castle for the past two years after coronavirus pandemic restrictions made it too tricky to film in the jungle Down Under, and the North Wales charity admits it will “always be grateful” to ITV.
A series of tweets posted on the Gwrych Castle account read: “It was such an honour to host I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! for the last 2 years. As a small charity, we will always be grateful to ITV and I’m A Celebrity for the opportunity to host one of the most watched shows in the UK.
“The show has showcased the true beauty of the Castle to millions of people, and has enabled us to carry out urgent repairs after years of neglect, vandalism and arson. We have a huge amount to do to bring the Castle back to its former glory, but we’re excited for the future!
“We will continue to collaborate with ITV and I’m A Celebrity, and we still have many items and set pieces in place from the past the 2 years such as The Clink, the I’m A Celebrity throne, privy and the telephone box. You can pre-book your tickets via our website. (sic)”
The comments come as ITV have confirmed the show will be heading back to Australia later this year.
They said in a statement: “Returning to its home in Australia after a two-year break, our celebrities will leave their plush pads and luxuries far behind as they spend up to three weeks taking on the Australian jungle with a whole host of surprises created just for them.
“Whoever does end up in the legendary jungle camp will find themselves cut off from the outside world and their fate will be in the hands of viewers who could decide to send them into a dreaded Bushtucker Trial.”
Ant and Dec will return to co-host the show when the 22nd series airs later this year.
What’s more, ITV are planning to reunite former ‘I’m A Celebrity’ favourites on an all-stars series.
They will head to South Africa this summer to film the spin-off, which will be broadcast next year.

Mock the Week to end after 17 years

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Mock The Week’ is to end after more than 17 years.
The BBC Two comedy panel show will come to a conclusion after the forthcoming 21st series, which will air this autumn, and host Dara O’Briain joked the panellists – who have included the likes of Hugh Dennis, Frankie Boyle, Chris Addison, Russell Howard, and Ed Byrne over the years – couldn’t be “more silly than the news” is already.
He said in a statement: “That’s it folks, the UK has finally run out of news.
“The storylines were getting crazier and crazier – global pandemics, divorce from Europe, novelty short-term prime ministers. It couldn’t go on.
“And so, regretfully, we are closing the doors on Dara and Hugh’s Academy for Baby Comedians. We just couldn’t be more silly than the news was already.
“Huge thanks to all our guests over the years, so many of whom went on to huge successes of their own, and never write or call. It was a joy!”
‘Mock the Week’ co-creator Dan Patterson admitted it was “desperately disappointing” that the show is coming to an end.
He tweeted: “It’s been announced that the next series of Mock the Week will be the last after 17 great years on the BBC. Desperately disappointing but hopefully we will resurface again soon. Huge thanks to Dara and Hugh and all the wonderful performers over the years. It’s been a privilege.”
The BBC said in a statement: “We are really proud of the show but after 21 series we have taken the difficult decision in order to create room for new shows.”
Angst Productions, the organisation behind the programme, added: “We’re naturally hugely disappointed that ‘Mock The Week’ is coming to an end and hope that we will be able to resurface somewhere some day in the future.”
The show – which has also featured Andy Parsons and Rory Bremner – began in June 2005.

Snoop Dogg to star in The Underdoggs

OHMYGOSSIP — Snoop Dogg is set to star in ‘The Underdoggs’.
The 50-year-old rapper will also produce the upcoming MGM comedy through his production company Death Row Pictures, with Kenya Barris, Mychelle Deschamps, Constance Schwartz-Morini and Jonathan Glickman also producing.
The movie tells the story of NFL superstar Jaycen ‘2Js’ Jenning (Snoop), who agrees to coach a youth football team to rehabilitate his image after he has a run-in with the law.
Snoop said: “The Underdoggs is a real personal project for me considering that I’ve been coaching football for 15+ years with the Snoop Youth Football League that I started with my long-time business partner Constance Schwartz-Morini. Giving back to the community through football has taught us so many invaluable life lessons that we’ve been able to share with kids in similar situations like mine when I was growing up. My hope is that this movie will shed light on the realities that kids and adults face in the hood and within the complex world of football.”
Chris Brearton, MGM’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “Snoop’s longtime commitment to his community via his youth football league is hugely inspiring to all of us at MGM. We are thrilled to be working alongside this incredible creative team to bring this great comedy to moviegoing audiences, and to further MGM’s commitment to the theatrical exhibition when it [is released] next October.”
Charles Stone will direct the movie, which has been written by Danny Segal and Isaac Schamis based on an original idea from Dogg and Schwartz-Morini.

Brad Pitt: ‘There was a beautiful symmetry to reuniting with David Leitch for Bullet Train’

OHMYGOSSIP — Brad Pitt says there was a “beautiful symmetry” to reuniting with David Leitch for ‘Bullet Train’.
Leitch was Pitt’s stunt double on the 1999 movie ‘Fight Club’ so when he approached Brad to star in ‘Bullet Train’, which he directed, Brad, 58, jumped at the chance.
Pitt told The Hollywood Reporter: “He trained me for those fights and in a way he [was] helping me develop the character; now he’s a director with his own voice and own vernacular and I’m serving him, he’s the boss. So there was a beautiful symmetry for two old friends.”
The movie features a Japanese bullet train full of assassins, with Brad playing retired hitman Ladybug, and he admitted his character is “the chump” of the film.
He said: “He’s the chump of the movie, it’s fair to say, and he’s been on hiatus and he’s just coming back in the game and trying to do things. He’s had a little bit of therapy, read a self-help book and had a few epiphanies and he’s going to try to find a win-win with these sociopaths.”
And Leitch is excited for people to see a new side to Pitt.
He explained: “I think people hadn’t seen Brad like this in a long time, maybe ever. He was dying to do comedy and when we sent him this script I think he responded and saw the things that we saw in it. It has great characters, especially [his character] Ladybug. He was laughing halfway through it and said, ‘I can do this. Leichty let’s do it. Leitchy let’s do it!’”

Tasha Ghouri wants to become charity ambassador

OHMYGOSSIP — Love Island’s Tasha Ghouri wants to continue to support the deaf community by becoming an ambassador for several charities.
The 23-year-old model and dancer wears a cochlear implant to enable her to hear after she was born deaf, and after finishing fourth on the ITV2 dating show, alongside her boyfriend Andrew Le Page, she is “passionate” about continuing to be there for people in the community.
When asked if she plans to talk further about her cochlear implant, she said: “That’s another part of my journey I want to embark on, I’m so passionate about it.
“I want to be an ambassador for certain charities.
“I want to keep pushing for the deaf community – it’s not spoken about enough.
“I want to be there for people and put others before me.”
Tasha would also love to land a fashion line with a company and she is keen to have her own dance show one day.
She said: “We’ve got big ambitions separately but we want to support each other.
“I love fashion, modelling, I would love to do a fashion line with a brand.
“Something amazing and fun. Who knows, maybe a dance show one day? I have big ambitions and I’m very motivated to go for it.”
Real estate agent Andrew is more of an open book, but the 27-year-old star would be up for appearing in a UK version of popular Los Angeles real estate show ‘Selling Sunset’.
He said: “I don’t know what I want to do. I’m open to taking opportunities. The end goal is property developing.”
When asked if he could see himself on a ‘Selling Sunset’ UK, he replied: “That would be good.”

S4C announce Welsh Gogglebox spin-off in the works

OHMYGOSSIP — A ‘Gogglebox’ spin-off is in the works.
The popular Channel 4 show, which documents reactions from members of the public as they sit around watching TV in their living rooms, is getting its own spin-off in Welsh on S4C.
The public broadcaster is the only Welsh language channel in the world that distributes a wide range of programmes including drama, documentaries and news.
As S4C celebrates its 40th birthday this year, they are delighted to be working with Channel 4 to produce the Welsh series, ‘Gogglebocs Cymru’.
Applications for the new show, which is based on the English version of Channel 4’s ‘Gogglebox’ from Studio Lambert, are now open.
Casting for the Welsh format must reflect modern day Wales by celebrating characters around Wales and Welsh speakers in and around the UK.
S4C’S Chief Content Officer, LLinos Griffin-Williams, said: “I am thrilled that Channel 4 has, for the first time, made an exception with one of their most valued formats, by agreeing to release exclusivity of Gogglebox in the UK to S4C. As two public service broadcasters, with a close and collaborative working relationship, we are delighted to be entrusted with such an important brand.”
S4C are committed to delivering a diverse range of content and are welcome to additional ideas in order to extend the reach.
The Welsh broadcaster hopes to emulate the success of the English version by building on the 40 worldwide format.
Last year, ‘Gogglebox’ was the second biggest title on Channel 4 racking up 5.4 million viewers on average.
‘Gogglebocs Cymru’ is expected to drop this autumn.

Alexander Skarsgard and Judy Greer join cast of Eric Larue

OHMYGOSSIP — Alexander Skarsgard and Judy Greer have joined the cast of Michael Shannon’s directorial debut.
Skarsgard, 45, and Greer, 47, will star in ‘Eric Larue’, the film adaptation of Brett Neveu’s play, according to Deadline.
Tracy Letts, Alison Pill, Kate Arrington, Paul Sparks, and Annie Parisse are also part of the ensemble cast for the film, which is currently in production in Wilmington, North Carolina.
The movie is based on Neveu’s 2002 play of the same name and the playwright also wrote the screenplay.
It will follow the mother of a 17-year-old boy who shot and killed three of his classmates.
Shannon previously said: “‘Eric Larue’ has so much to say about our country, about the way we try (sometimes quite ineptly) to deal with the trauma of living here, which is so insidious because it does not present itself overtly in concrete terms most of the time. Like most great stories, Eric Larue plays at the macro and a micro level simultaneously. When I read the screenplay, I immediately knew I had to direct it. I saw it. I heard it. I could feel it. And I wanted to make sure that it received just the right touch in all its aspects, because at the end of the day, it is an extraordinarily delicate thing.
“I find it interesting to align with artists possessing the most vivid imaginations, the most stringent yet empathetic senses of morality, and the most passionate and rigorous disciplines to create worlds and stories that contribute to our experience and understanding of what it is to be a human being in this day and age and, particularly, this country.”

Brad Pitt praises Ana de Armas’ Marilyn

OHMYGOSSIP — Brad Pitt has praised Ana de Armas’ “phenomenal” Marilyn Monroe performance in ‘Blonde’.
The 58-year-old actor revealed the movie was in development for 10 years with his production company Plan B but it was only when Ana was cast that they could finally move forward.
He told Entertainment Tonight: “It was 10 years in the making. It wasn’t until we found Ana that we could get it across the finish line. She is phenomenal in it. That’s a tough dress to fill.”
‘Blonde’ is a fictional account of Marilyn’s life, based on the 2000 novel by Joyce Carol Oates.
Along with Ana, 34, the movie also stars Bobby Cannavale, Adrien Brody, Julianne Nicholson, Xavier Samuel and Evan Williams.
Although Ana has been blasted for keeing her Cuban accent to play Monroe, she insisted she wants to defy traditional casting in Hollywood.
She said: “I do want to play Latina. But I don’t want to put a basket of fruit on my head every single time. So that’s my hope, that I can show that we can do anything if we’re given the time to prepare, and if we’re given just the chance, just the chance. You can do any film – ‘Blonde’ – you can do anything. The problem is that sometimes you don’t even get to the room with the director to sit down and prove yourself.”

‘Love Island’ finale ‘shot over two days with contestants moved to holding villa and banned from Internet’

OHMYGOSSIP — The ‘Love Island’ finale is said to be shot over two days, with contestants moved to a holding villa and banned from the Internet.
Castmates are also reportedly told to pack 48 hours in advance and given fast food to kill time during the marathon filming – before they get a make over by a huge “glam squad” and put back in the original villa for the final scenes.
The claims were made by 2021 ‘Love Island’ runner-up Chloe Burrows ahead of tonight’s final. (01.08.22)
Chloe, 26, who placed second alongside boyfriend Toby Aromolaran, 23, on the seventh series of the ITV2 show, said: “It happens over two days. You wake up on your last morning in the villa and you have to go and pack all your bags and that takes absolutely ages because some of us have been there for eight weeks. I remember Toby left with seven suitcases.
“You are then moved to a holding villa in your couples and you have a chaperone.
“We ate McDonald’s and just sat and watched Netflix, but obviously you’re supervised so you can’t go onto the internet.
Chloe added to OK! magazine: “The next morning they send in the biggest glam squad you’ve ever seen and then they ship you back to the main villa and you just wait around until the live final.”
She also said ‘Love Island’ couples play up to the cameras when it comes to apparent sexual exploits on the show, as it’s said to make them more popular with fans.
Chloe and Toby reportedly “graduated” – code for having sex – on the same night as three other couples on last year’s series.
She has now revealed it may not have been the case, adding: “We all lied. We graduated a lot later than we actually graduated.”
In May, Chloe insisted her romance with Toby was intact after split rumours started in April.
The couple moved into a £1 million home weeks after losing out to winners Millie Court and Liam Reardon in the Love Island finale last summer.
Monday night’s final comes after Adam and Paige got the boot on Sunday after a “least compatible” vote between castmates.
The final couples are Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu and Davide Saclimenti, both 27, Luca Bish, 24, and Gemma Owen, 19, Dami Hope, 26, and Indiyah Polack, 23, and finally Tasha Ghouri, 24, and Andrew Le Page, 26.
A preview of Monday night’s show has shown the four couples getting glammed up for the Summer ball ahead of one couple being crowned winners.
The remaining eight contestants will also receive a “hot Latin dance” class during the ball ahead of the results an hour later, which will see the winning couple take home the £50,000 cash prize, unless one of them decides to keep the lot.
Davide and Ekin-Su are the bookies’ favourite to win, with their odds being as short as 1/9, while Gemma and Luca are their most likely challengers at 8/1.
‘Love Island’ airs at 9pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub. Episodes are available the following morning on BritBox. The dating reality show can be seen in Ireland on Virgin Media Two and Virgin Media Player.

Kathy Bates and Liza Koshy to star in Netflix rom-com with Nicole Kidman and more

OHMYGOSSIP — Kathy Bates and Liza Koshy have joined the cast of a currently-untitled star-studded Netflix rom-com.
Nicole Kidman, 55, Joey King, 23, and Zac Efron, 34, were previously announced for Richard LaGravenese’s flick, which he penned with Carrie Solomon.
The movie, as reported by Deadline, tells the tale of a “surprising romance which kicks off comic consequences for a young woman, her mother and her movie star boss as they face the complications of love, sex, and identity.”
The ‘American Horror Story’ star and 26-year-old YouTube personality-and-actress Liza’s roles are not known at this time.
Kathy’s other upcoming movies include starring alongside Dame Maggie Smith and Laura Linney in ‘The Miracle Club’.
Thaddeus O’Sullivan’s flick tells the story of a riotous group of women who go on a pilgrimage from Dublin to France. The journey allows them to discover their friendship and their own personal miracles.
The 74-year-old star will also star in ‘Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret’, Kelly Fremon Craig’s adaptation of Judy Blume’s best-selling novel.
She plays the titular character’s grandmother, Sylvia.
The Oscar-winner, John Malkovich and Lewis Pullman also lead the cast of ‘Thelma’ by Ken Kwapis.
The film “recounts the true story of the mother of John Kennedy Toole (Pullman), the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of ‘A Confederacy of Dunces’. Toole died by suicide before finding a home for his masterpiece, and his mother Thelma (Bates) made it her life’s mission, through outrageous gamesmanship, to see the book published. She eventually succeeded in getting the manuscript into the hands of writer Walker Percy (Malkovich), who became the novel’s champion. It would be published in 1980, eleven years after Ken’s death, thereafter becoming a widely celebrated cult classic.”

Jay Younger returning to day job following Love Island stint

OHMYGOSSIP — Jay Younger is returning to his day job following his stint on ‘Love Island’.
The 28-year-old investment analyst is heading back to work in his office in Edinburgh on Monday (08.08.22) after failing to find love in the villa, and he doesn’t think appearing on the ITV2 dating show will change his life “much”.
He said: “I don’t think my life will change that much if I’m being honest.
“I’m going back to work on Monday and sure there’s some commercial opportunities out there in the short term, but I think longer term I’ll be back at work doing my thing and back to my day job.”
Jay took two months of unpaid leave from his job to enable him to take part in ‘Love Island’, and he is “really grateful” to be able to return to work for the same company.
Quizzed on what his colleagues thought about him being in the villa, he told Mirror Online: “I think they’re just happy that I’ve come out unscathed and I’m alright, and then hopefully I can start working hard and producing good work for them and then they’ll judge me on that!
“My work were so cool with it, and they really supported me. I’m really grateful to still have them as employers.”
During Jay’s time in the villa, he shared a steamy kiss with eventual winner Ekin-Su Culculoglu, when she was still coupled up with Davide Sanclimenti, who she went on to win the show’s £50,000 prize with.
The moment caused controversy after Ekin-Su crawled onto the terrace to slyly meet with Jay before kissing him, and Davide later branded her a “liar” and an “actress” in a furious bust-up.
Fortunately for the pair, they managed to patch things up and triumphed in Monday’s (01.08.22) finale.

James Franco set to play Fidel Castro in Aline of Cuba

OHMYGOSSIP — James Franco is set to star as Cuban leader Fidel Castro in Miguel Bardem’s ‘Alina of Cuba’.
The ‘Disaster Artist’ actor has landed the role with the blessing of Castro’s daughter, Alina Fernández Revuelta, who the upcoming movie is about.
She defected to Spain and was a strong critic of her father, who died in 2016, aged 90.
Mía Maestro will play Natalia ‘Naty’ Revuelta, the socialite Castro has an affair with.
Ana Villafañe was previously cast as Alina.
As reported by Deadline, the film “follows the true-life story of Cuban exile turned social advocate, Fernandez, whose birth was the result of the tryst between Revuelta and Castro. Revuelta sacrificed her and her physician husband’s personal belongings and finances to help fund the start of the communist revolution. Fernandez learned that she was Fidel Castro’s daughter at the age of 10 when after years of secret visits to her home, her mother finally revealed that ‘El Comandante’ was her biological father. Alina grew to become one of Castro’s most outspoken critics, arrested on more than one occasion for trying to leave, and was classified as a dissident forbidden to travel outside of Cuba. Ultimately, she defected to Spain in 1993, an event that drew headlines from every major news network around the world, before she made Miami her permanent home.”
The script comes from Jose Rivera and Nilo Cruz.
John Martinez O’Felan, the project’s lead creative producer, said: “Since the inception of the film, our focus has been to produce an artistic piece of modern Hispanic history, with the vision for the project as being truly inclusive through uniting actors and creatives from both intergenerational and recent Latin roots from the US, Latin America, and the world. That said, casting Ana and Mia were no-brainers because, besides the trajectory of their past work, one represents modern Cuban-America and the other Argentina. After watching Ana’s reel and auditioning her, it became evident she was perfectly suited and had a great voice to carry the material, and Mia’s work in the past with Jose spoke for itself and screamed writer/actress reunion.”
The casting of Castro was a “challenging process” and Franco was chosen for having a “similar facial structure” to the late Cuban revolutionary.
The producer added: “Finding and convincing James Franco to play Castro, was a fun and challenging process and has been the collaborative work of the universe, because our director’s original order was to find an actor who holds a close physical resemblance to the real Castro to build from, along with finding someone Alina Fernandez would strongly endorse. To get there on such a tough look to cast, we used Fidel Castro’s ancient Galician heraldry as our focal compass, and then combed through the entire ranks of actors with Latin roots in Hollywood to find someone who has a similar facial structure. In executing a close search into our hopefuls through the eye of Spanish and Portuguese genealogy which the Galicians held, we found that James, by far, had the closest facial likeness of our Industry’s leading actors, meaning that the focus would be to build out his character accent and we’d have a stunning on-screen match to intrigue audiences and bring the story to life with true visual integrity. Altogether, working with such a supportive and exciting cast has been a true blessing to our team and project.”
Filming will take place in Cartagena and Bogota and kick off on August 15.
