BBC confirm Gladiators to return in 2023 with 11-episode series

OHMYGOSSIP — The BBC has confirmed it is reviving ‘Gladiators’.
The broadcaster is bringing back the iconic game show – which saw members of the public go up as Contenders against the resident Gladiators in a series of tough physical sports challenges – with an 11-episode series, made by Hungry Bear Media and MGM Television UK, which will hit TV screens in late 2023.
Kate Phillips, Director of Unscripted at the BBC, says: “Gladiators is back and a whole new generation of viewers can now look forward to watching a Saturday night spectacle like no other.
“Will the contenders have the will and the skill to succeed against our mighty new Gladiators? You’ll have to tune in to find out!”
Scot Cru, EVP of Global Formats and Unscripted Content, MGM Television, said: “‘Gladiators’ is a format that resonates with viewers worldwide. We are thrilled to bring this revered series to the BBC and can’t wait to introduce our UK Gladiators.”
Dan Baldwin, Managing Director Hungry Bear, added: “It’s the perfect time for ‘Gladiators’ to return. What other show combines electric excitement, superheroes, giant sponge fingers, elite athletes, and a pinch of pantomime? Watch out for the new breed of superhuman, supersized, superstars bursting on to your screens on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.”
The reboot will include brand new contests alongside classic challenges, and the competitors will still have to face the dreaded Eliminator at the end of each episode.
Shooting on the show is scheduled to take place at the Utilita Arena Sheffield in 2023 and the programme makers are on the hunt for new Gladiators and contestants.
‘Gladiators’ first hit screens on ITV in 1992 and ran for eight seasons, making household names of the titular competitors, who included Jet (Diane Youdale), Wolf (Michael Van Wijk), Cobra (Michael Willson) and Lightning (Kim Betts) among many others, and was presented by likes of Ulrika Jonsson, John Fashanu and Jeremy Guscott.
It ended in 2000 but in 2008 the show was resurrected for two seasons on Sky One, including three episodes that saw the new generation of Gladiators go up against some of the original line-up. International editions have also sprung up in countries such as Australia, the United States, Finland and South Africa.

Catherine Tate to star in BBC comedy Queen of Oz

OHMYGOSSIP — Catherine Tate is to star in new BBC comedy ‘Queen of Oz’.
The 54-year-old comic will both write and executive produce the six-part series, which is based on an original idea from herself and Borga Dorta.
The comedy follows Princess Georgiana (Tate), who is the black sheep of a fictional British royal family as she has spent her spoilt, party-girl life plastered over the tabloids.
On the back of her latest scandal her father, the King, makes the unprecedented move of abdicating his Australian throne in favour of her daughter. He hopes that giving her some real responsibility will be the making of her – and if it isn’t, it at least ships her 10,000 miles away from London.
Alongside a useless entourage, Queen Georgiana of Australia is sent kicking and screaming to a country she has no interest in apart from the Hemsworth brothers.
The ‘Catherine Tate Show’ star will executive produce the series with Michele Bennett and Helen Bowden. Christian Van Vuuren will direct the show, which is being produced by Lingo Pictures in association with ABC Australia.
Filming will begin later this year in Australia and further casting will be announced in due course.
Jon Petrie, Director of BBC Comedy, said: “It’s time to roll out the red carpet. And hang up the bunting again. We’re excited to have the multi-award-winning Catherine Tate back making another comedy for the BBC. Her work has been enjoyed by millions over the years and we look forward to working with her on another hit for us.”
Bennett added: “Catherine Tate is such a superb talent and the team at Lingo Pictures couldn’t be more delighted to be working with her on this fabulously witty series.
“We know that British and Australians, as well as audiences around the world, are going to love this riotous take on royalty in Australia.”

Rose Ayling-Ellis to host BBC documentary about sign language

OHMYGOSSIP — Rose Ayling-Ellis is set to front a new BBC documentary about sign language.
The 27-year-old actress will host a one-hour documentary called ‘Signs For Change’, which will explore the daily challenges and discrimination facing people within the deaf community.
Rose – who is a British Sign Language user – said: “This documentary will be real, emotional and hard-hitting, and it is high time that the realities of deaf people in the UK were shared with a wider audience.
“My hope is to encourage people to look at our attitude as a society and to reflect on how we can improve the lives of deaf people. It will not paint me as an inspiration, but will instead lift the lid on the gritty stuff that we desperately need to confront.”
The documentary is set to explore “societal change and inclusion for deaf individuals”, according to the BBC.
Rose previously admitted that she’s determined to “make a difference”.
The actress – who starred in ‘EastEnders’ before winning ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ in 2021 – revealed she’s keen to help to breakdown barriers for deaf people.
She said: “I am ambitious to make a difference. I feel like there’s so many barriers out there that need to be broken. And I’m quite happy to break them up! I think I’m addicted to it now.”
Rose is also keen to use her ‘Strictly’ success to bring attention to the issues facing the UK’s deaf community.
The soap star – who has been deaf since birth – explained: “I want to use my platform, while everyone is looking at me, to reflect that attention on to the whole deaf community.”
What’s more, Rose insisted that attitudes towards deaf and disabled people need to change within the entertainment industry.
She said: “A lot of agents don’t take on deaf people or disabled people. Because they don’t think they’re going to give them a lot of work. That has got to change.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Joe Absolom felt “really sad” filming the final series of ‘Doc Martin.’
The 43-year-old actor has starred as Al Large in the ITV comedy drama opposite Martin Clunes since it first aired in 2004 but filming has wrapped on the final series of the Cornwall-based show after almost two decades and he admitted the last days shooting were “very emotional.”
He said: “We’ve just filmed the final series, which was really sad. The last days of filming were very emotional. The crew have been working together for 18 years and we have had such a laugh on it. It’s a lovely show and it introduced me to Cornwall.”
The former ‘EastEnders’ star – who was born in London but now lives in the South West county with his wife Liz Brown and their children Lyla, Casper, and Daisy – went on to explain that he “never thought” he would leave the capital but has settled into Cornwall since moving there almost a decade ago.
He told Metro newspaper’s SixtySeconds column: “I’m London born and bred and thought I could never leave but I moved to Cornwall eight years ago. My youngest daughter, Daisy, is nine and she’s Cornish – she’s got clotted cream in the blood! My kids go to surf club on a Friday night and I sit in the pub that overlooks the beach and watch them – it’s a good way to live. But I like coming back and visiting London. I stay with my brother and sister and we get Deliveroo. We left London before Deliveroo and Uber and now everyone is buzzing around on scooters – the only problem is it makes me feel like a country bumpkin!”
‘Doc Martin’ is set to return to screens in autumn 2022.

Chad Stahelski knew he wouldn’t have a ‘ton of cash’ for Day Shift movie

OHMYGOSSIP — Chad Stahelski knew he wouldn’t have a “ton of cash” to use on ‘Day Shift.’
The 53-year-old producer is at the helm of the new vampire movie – which stars Jamie Foxx as a dad who hunts vampires – along with J.J Knight but admitted that he always knew the budget for the fight scenes would be low and wanted to help newcome J.J “make a statement” with his first movie.
He said: “We knew we weren’t going to have a ton of cash. We knew it was J.J.’s first movie. You have to make a statement. You have to do something tricky. J.J. is from the same generation that me, Dave, and everybody is else from. We’re from the slight of hand generation, as we call it. We have nothing. ”
Chad – who is known for his work on cult TV series ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and also directed all of the ‘John Wick’ movies – added that despite the low funding, the team wanted to keep the “magic” in filmmaking with alternative methods to FX.
He told Collider: ” We don’t want to give away anything. We don’t want you to know it’s a prosthetic. We don’t want you to know it’s a wire gag. We just don’t want you to know. We want to keep the magic in filmmaking. But he was like, ‘Okay. Well, I want to do all these great things.’ And I’m like, ‘Okay, which things?; Like, “Look, I’m going to use contortionist for the vampires, so I’m going to make them move differently.” So, we don’t just say, ‘Okay, it’s going to be an actor.’ Next thing you know, it’s a dig double or a digital double, just running around doing stuff. Our goal has always been, and our whole little click is you get great people, they do great things. You get amazing people, they’ll do amazing things.”
‘Day Shift’ is available to stream on Netflix now.

Batman 2 script underway as Matt Reeves signs multi-year deal with Warner Bros.

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘The Batman 2’ script is underway.
The director of the first film, Matt Reeves, has just signed a first-look deal with Warner Bros. with the studio owning all the rights to his future projects for a set period of years, including the sequel to the 2022 DC blockbuster starring Robert Pattinson as the titular caped crusader.
In a statement to Deadline, Reeves, who is working on the script with Mattson Tomlin, said: “Making this legendary studio my home is a dream.
“I am so excited to be working with Mike, Pam, and Channing and our teams to bring captivating stories I am truly passionate about to the big and small screen.”
Meanwhile, Colin Farrell is set to return as The Penguin in a spinoff series set “a little short time” after ‘The Batman’.
The 46-year-old actor previously teased the HBO Max series about “what made him the man he is”.
He said: “They are still early in the process of creating this world.
“We have to get into what made him the man he is. And also, it will pick up where this film finished off I think. I think it’ll pick up a little short time after the last frame of this film.
“We’ll get to go on a little kind of left turn off to the world of Oz and how he’s beginning to kind of dream of filling a potential power vacuum that may exist.”
Although it is still “early days” Colin is delighted about the idea of the spinoff because he’s found it “so much fun” to play The Penguin and loves the thought of investigating where his alter ego’s vulnerabilities are.
He added: “It’s a lovely, lovely character, and explores vulnerabilities.
“His violence is apparent, his propensity for violence and his ability to use it as a tool is apparent, but [also] to see we all have soft spots. Every single person. And to be able to find that location, dig around it would be fun.”

‘I’m so looking forward to this’: Jesse Eisenberg to play a Sasquatch

OHMYGOSSIP — Jesse Eisenberg will play a Sasquatch in an upcoming movie.
The 38-year-old actor – who just made his directional debut with ‘When You Finish Saving The World’ – has revealed he’s set to play a Bigfoot character in a movie helmed by the Zellner Brothers (Nathan and David).
Speaking to Variety, Eisenberg said: “The next movie I’m doing is [with] the Zellner Brothers.
“They’re just these brilliant directors that I’ve wanted to work with for a long time, and I’m playing a Sasquatch.”
The ‘Zombieland’ star admitted he’s looking forward to not having any talking parts.
He added: “In full makeup. In full body hair. No lines — I grunt, but no lines — and I’m so looking forward to this.”
The filmmaking siblings previously put out the short ‘Sasquatch Birth Journal 2’ in 2010.
The plot read: “Sasquatch fanatics since they were children, the Zellner brothers think of the Sasquatch as a friend but also acknowledge their ‘unhealthy, unrealistic desire to pet and cuddle wild animals.'”
Eisenberg’s other upcoming projects include writing and helming ‘A Real Pain’, in which he’ll also star alongside Kieran Culkin.
The ‘Social Network’ star is poised to head to Poland in March 2023 to shoot the film about “two estranged cousins who travel to Poland after their grandmother dies to see where she came from and end up joining a Holocaust tour.”
They will be played by Eisenberg and ‘Succession’ star Kieran, 39.
He is once again teaming up with Dave McCary, Emma Stone and Ali Herting’s production firm Fruit Tree on the movie, after ‘When You Finish Saving The World’ was released under the banner.
The ‘Now You See Me’ star says the movie asks if “modern pain is valid against the backdrop of real historical trauma.”
In a recent interview with ScreenDaily.com, Eisenberg said of the two characters: “They have a funny, fraught relationship; it’s a bittersweet story, as we realise maybe we don’t fully belong together, but against the backdrop of this incredibly dramatic history.
“I’m trying to ask the question is modern pain valid against the backdrop of real historical trauma? I think I’m speaking to the experience of people [in their 30s] who go back and it’s foreign to them – and now suddenly real.”
Eisenberg is hoping to work with as many team members from the crew of his first film as he can, along with locals.
He added: “Luckily I’m shooting in a country that has an amazing film tradition.”
The movie star previously opened up about coming from a “secular suburban Jewish household” himself, while his ancestors were Polish.
Eisenberg said: “I grew up in a secular suburban Jewish household where we only observed the religion on very specific times like a funeral or a Bar Mitzvah.”
