Jane McDonald opens up about grief following fiance’s death

OHMYGOSSIP — Jane McDonald has opened up about her grief following the death of her fiancé Eddie Rothe last year.
The 59-year-old singer and ‘Loose Women’ star was left devastated following the death of her long-term partner Eddie after a battle with lung cancer and she moved her best friend, Sue Ravey, because she was in a “bad way”.
Speaking on Kaye Adams’ ‘How To Be 60’ podcast, Jane said: “You know, when you’re on your own, there’s, there’s always that the wee small hours in the morning where everything seems a lot worse than it actually is.
“And if I wake up and I’m in a bad way, I know that Sue’s just down the hall a bit. And I can get up and say can you have a cup of tea with me? She’ll probably kill me if I do that.
“But you know, sometimes it’s just knowing that someone else in the house and we’ve both got that now.
“I think that’s part of grief as well is that you go through the normal grief and the terrible, terrible time and then you grieve the life that you thought you were going to have.
“When he died, he took our future. So I think that is, I’ve got to have a different life now. And that’s taken a bit of adjusting to, but I’ll get there. Because that’s what do, we get there.”
Jane and Eddie – who was a member of the 60s band The Searchers – first started dating in 1980 when Jane was 17, but parted ways before Jane went on to marry her first husband Paul from 1986 to 1987.
She later tied the knot with Hendrik Brixen, her former manager, in 1998 before their divorce in 2002, and then in 2008 she reunited with her first love Eddie, whom she has been with ever since.

Dave Myers has lost his famous beard after chemo

OHMYGOSSIP — Dave Myers has lost his famous beard, due to chemotherapy.
The 64-year-old ‘Hairy Bikers’ star admitted he saying goodbye to his facial hair had been one of the most difficult things about his cancer diagnosis.
Speaking to his friend Si King on the ‘Agony Uncles’ podcast, he said: “I just miss having my beard, the feeling of it, because your skin’s different and all peachy.
“I’m missing my beard but doing alright. I was born with that beard.
“No, I want my beard back — I’m alright with my hair! I think the bald head and beard is the way to go for a biker as you’re getting on.
“Under the circumstances, I’m doing alright.”
Meanwhile, Si, 55, has ruled out making any ‘Hairy Bikers’ shows without Dave.
He previously said: “There’s no [Punch and Judy] show without Punch and there’s no Hairy Bikers without Dave.
“We’ve always been joined at the hip, so it’s very odd for me and it’s very odd for Dave. We’ll get through it — he’s as tough as an old boot.”
Instead Si will focus on his music, explaining: “I have a 12-piece funk band which takes up a lot of time. We’re on tour all year and will extend our stay in Spain.”
Dave hasn’t gone into detail about what he is suffering from.
He said: “I’ve got to come clean now, I haven’t been too well recently and basically, I’ve got to have some chemo… So this year is going to be a bit quiet for me, I’m not going to be filming, some of the festivals I’m not going to be able to go to, some may be OK, but this year’s a bit of a write off for us.
“I have had to speak up about this because I don’t want to hide under a rock, but I would love it if people respected my privacy and just let me get on with it and give Si and our team all the support they need. That would be great. But look, the prognosis is OK. I’m going to be fine.”

John Boyega was ‘hungry for the right kind of role’ after Star Wars

OHMYGOSSIP — John Boyega was “hungry for the right kind of role” after ‘Star Wars’.
The 30-year old actor starred as stormtrooper Finn in three instalments of the Disney sci-fi franchise from 2015 until 2019, and explained that he felt typecast until landing the role of real-life Marine Corps veteran Lance Corporal Brian Brown-Easley in the new thriller ‘Breaking’.
He said: “I’m really enjoying it. If we look at ‘Attack the Block’, that’s kind of how I was pretty much found, being central to a story and being the actor who plays the character who forces the story forward. It’s very exciting and it’s a huge responsibility but at the same time it’s a chance to collaborate with the best people.”
“I was hungry for the right kind of role. I felt like Hollywood had it twisted. All these roles that I was reading I was like ‘Nah this is not for me.’ Just 2D stuff. Like ‘Oh well, he did ‘Star Wars’ so he’d probably want to do that kind of mentality. I wasn’t getting the Steve McQueen or the Viola Davis approach.”
The ‘Imperial Dreams’ actor – who stars alongside Nicole Beharie and the late Michael K. Williams in what became his penultimate screen role before he suffered an overdose at the age of 54 in 2021 – added that until he landed the part in the movie he wasn’t getting the “chance” to elevate his career and did not want to “bore” his fans in any way.
Speaking on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, he added: “I wasn’t getting the opportunity to elevate. This came out of nowhere. I needed a role that was challenging so my audience can be entertained in a new fresh way because I do not want to bore my audience in any way.”

John Williams debuts new theme from Indiana Jones 5

OHMYGOSSIP — John Williams has teased the soundtrack for ‘Indiana Jones 5’.
The legendary composer unveiled ‘Helena’s Theme’, which has been created for Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character in the upcoming blockbuster, during his Maestro of the Movies concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Friday (02.09.22).
John, who has composed scores for films such as ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Jaws’, revealed that he was encouraged to play the music by the movie’s director James Mangold even though the flick will not be released until June 2023.
He told the audience: “Jim said, ‘Why don’t you play it at the Bowl next week?’
“I said, ‘Jim! The picture’s not coming out until next year!'”
Williams recalled how Mangold was determined to allow the music to be heard.
The 90-year-old composer explained: “(He replied) ‘That doesn’t matter. Play it at the Bowl anyway.'”
John described Phoebe’s character as an “adventuress” and revealed the song’s composition reflects her personality.
He said: “She’s also a femme fatale. She’s many, many things. She has a kind of lyrical music like an old movie star, which she looks like, except she’s young and beautiful and wonderful.
“Here is Helena’s Theme. Like six months too early.”
Harrison Ford, 80, will return in the lead role in ‘Indiana Jones 5’ and John has suggested that it could be the last major film he composes.
He said earlier this year: “At the moment I’m working on ‘Indiana Jones 5’, which Harrison Ford – who’s quite a bit younger than I am – I think he has announced will be his last film.
“So I thought: If Harrison can do it, then perhaps I can, also.”
John added: “I don’t want to be seen as categorically eliminating any activity… I can’t play tennis, but I like to be able to believe that maybe one day I will.”

Anton Du Beke hasn’t spoken to Bruno Tonioli since replacing him on Strictly Come Dancing

OHMYGOSSIP — Anton Du Beke hasn’t spoken to Bruno Tonioli since replacing him on the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ judging panel.
The 56-year-old star filled in for Bruno last year due to travel restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic but has now taken the slot permanently for the new series, although he is yet to speak to his predecessor who has opted to focus on his work on the US show ‘Dancing With the Stars’.
Anton told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: “I haven’t spoken to him. I haven’t spoken to any of the judges.
“It was all down to circumstance really. The situation with flying still isn’t ideal – we all know how many flights are being cancelled – and Bruno said to the BBC, ‘Listen, I can’t do both shows. Thank you very much and good luck.'”
Anton was proud of his stint as a judge last year but suggested that he would have willingly moved aside and returned to the dance floor if Tonioli wanted to come back.
He said: “I always knew it could be taken away, however good I was on the judging panel. But I took the same attitude as I did when I was competing, which is that I can only control what I do.
“Ballroom dancing is not first past the post — it is subjective, and you’re being adjudicated.
“So it doesn’t matter how well you thought you did. If your number doesn’t get called, there is nothing you can do.
“All you can do is be ready and do your best. I was pleased with my performance on the show.”
Anton, who has featured in every series of ‘Strictly’ since it launched in 2004, continued: “But I was only stepping in. If Bruno had wanted to come back, the bosses couldn’t say to him, ‘We don’t want you’.
“If it had been the other way around and that had happened to me, I would have been really disappointed.
“So it would have been fair enough. It was his job in the first place, and I’d have gone back to dancing.”

Emily Atack to front BBC documentary about online sexual harassment

OHMYGOSSIP — Emily Atack is to speak out about sexual harassment in a new BBC documentary.
The 32-year-old star will open up about sex pests targeting her from a young age in the new BBC Two film as she tries to understand why she is sexually harassed online on a daily basis.
The programme, titled ‘Emily Atack: Sexual Harassment and Me’, will see ‘The Inbetweeners’ star talking to her family – including her comedy star mother Kate Robbins – about her unwanted sexual attention and her attempts to chat to some of the men sending her explicit messages to understand the reasons behind their behaviour.
Emily said: “With this documentary, I am hoping to find answers to the many questions I’ve been asking myself for my entire life, and I hope that it will go on to help thousands of others too.”
The former ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!’ contestant described the new documentary as “incredibly close to her heart”.
Emily, who has spoken about her horrific ordeal in Parliament, said: “Over the last two and half years I’ve been speaking out about my own personal experiences of online sexual harassment. Within that time, one thing has become clear, I’m not alone.”
A source revealed that Emily is determined to do the issue “justice” in the film.
A TV insider told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: “This is a massive career moment for Emily. Not only has she spearheaded an important movement, but the BBC are investing a lot in her.
“She’s taking the role very seriously and wants to do it justice, she’s revealing a lot about herself too, but knows it could help a lot of people suffering.”

Janelle Monae teases ‘unique, fun, weird’ Knives Out sequel

OHMYGOSSIP — Janelle Monáe says ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’ is its own “unique, fun, weird thing”.
The 36-year-old star plays tech entrepreneur Cassandra ‘Andi’ Brand in Rian Johnson’s upcoming sequel to the 2019 whodunnit, and she’s hailed the director for creating something unlike anything else in the murder-mystery sphere.
She told the latest issue of Empire magazine: “We don’t have a lot of murder-mystery films out that innovate in that space.
“So that within itself makes it its own unique, fun, weird thing.”
Her co-star, Kate Hudson (Birdie Jay), agrees.
She said: “Rian does an incredible job in the execution of taking it outside of where the first one was and making the audience feel like they’re in a completely different world.”
Daniel Craig is returning as the lead Detective Benoit Blanc.
He said of the new movie: “There’s definitely more Blanc, but it’s not very interesting to me, the notion of building out Benoit’s life.
“Like with Poirot and Miss Marple, what’s fun is how the elements of Benoit’s character reveal themselves through his act of solving each one of these mysteries.”
Having starred as James Bond in five films, Daniel admits that he has no fear about turning ‘Knives Out’ into a successful series.
He explained: “I’ve spent the past 15 years of my life trying to do that in a franchise, so I’m not afraid of it.
“If you’ve got the right people in the room and the right talent, then you can do it. Rian’s a genius writer and doesn’t want to repeat (himself). Neither do we want to let people down, we want audiences to enjoy the world that we created in the first one and believe in this one.”

Oti Mabuse quizzed about The Masked Dancer on the toilet

OHMYGOSSIP — Oti Mabuse has revealed that fans ask her questions about ‘The Masked Dancer’ while she is on the toilet.
The former ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ professional features as a panellist on the popular ITV series and revealed that people will stop at nothing to find out who the famous faces behind the costumes are.
Oti, 32, is quoted by the Daily Star Sunday newspaper as saying: “There are times when I’m in the bathroom and I get a knock on the wall and someone saying, ‘Who is Scissors?’
“I’m like, ‘OK, bye’. It happens everywhere I go. The first question I get is, ‘Who is this person?'”
Oti continued: “Sometimes I’m sitting in a black cab and the driver will say, ‘Who’s Dog?’ I’m thinking, ‘I didn’t expect you to be someone who watches the show, but I love it.'”
Mabuse’s fellow panellist Davina McCall also revealed that she gets grilled about the show by her family.
She said: “My kids thumbscrew every week. It’s so hard not to give away even the gender of the celebrity. I’m going, ‘Don’t talk to me anymore’. I have to walk away.”
Meanwhile, Oti’s series ‘Romeo and Duet’ was recently axed by ITV after just one series.
An spokesman for the channel said: “We have no plans for future series of ‘Roman and Duet’ at present.
“But we look forward to working with Oti again on ‘The Masked Dancer’ later this year and are actively discussing other projects going forward.”
ITV bosses believe that the cancellation of ‘Romeo and Duet’ “isn’t a reflection on Oti in any way”.
A source said: “The feeling was that it wasn’t a case of Oti not being right for the show, more than the show wasn’t right for Oti.
“So many of our biggest hosts have had to suffer a few bumps in the road at the start of their career, and that’s how this is viewed by execs.
“They’re confident that this isn’t a reflection on Oti in any way and she’s still a figure who is much loved by the public.”

Rose Ayling-Ellis splits from boyfriend

OHMYGOSSIP — Rose Ayling-Ellis has split from her boyfriend.
The ‘EastEnders’ actress has reportedly called it quits with Samuel Arnold – who like her is deaf – after seven years as they spent time apart while Rose appeared on the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ live tour after winning the Glitterball trophy with Giovanni Pernice last year.
A friend told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: “Rose and Sam’s relationship is definitely over.
“It’s very amicable and they’ll remain close friends, but unfortunately there is no future for them romantically.
“They spent a lot of time apart while Rose was away on tour, which has had an impact.
“It’s been difficult for them both, of course, but they’re certain it’s the right move.”
The friend added: “Rose has been throwing herself into work. She’s had lots of offers since winning ‘Strictly’. It’s an exciting time for her.”
Rose quit ‘EastEnders’ last month after playing Frankie Lewis for two years on the BBC soap and confirmed that she wanted to explore other opportunities.
The 27-year-old star said: “It’s been incredibly special to be EastEnders’ first regular deaf actor.
“I have loved my time on the show and Frankie has been such an awesome character to play, however now feels like the right time for me to move on and I am excited and ready for new challenges.
“I will always treasure my time on the show and all the incredible people I have worked with, who have supported my growth as an actor these last two years and given me so many amazing memories.
“I am excited for viewers to see Frankie’s exit storyline; I think it’s a really important one that will hit home for lots of people.”
Rose’s final scenes on Albert Square will air later this year.

Sylvester Stallone missed out on playing an extra in The Godfather

OHMYGOSSIP — Sylvester Stallone missed out on the chance to be an extra in ‘The Godfather’.
The ‘Rocky’ star revealed that he asked Paramount if he could be in the background of the iconic wedding scene in Francis Ford Coppola’s classic 1972 crime film but was snubbed because he wasn’t “the type of guy”.
Sly told Empire magazine: “I went to Paramount, and said, ‘Can I be an extra in the wedding scene?’
“They said, ‘Yeah, we don’t know if you’re the type of guy’. I go, ‘I’m not the type? To play in the background, hiding behind a f****** wedding cake?'”
The 76-year-old actor will finally get the chance to play a mobster in the TV series ‘Tulsa King’ as he portrays Dwight ‘The General’ Manfredi and Sly feels it has been worth waiting 50 years for.
He said: “Finally I get my gangster shot 50 years later, and that’s perfect. Everything comes to those who wait.”
Stallone became a Hollywood superstar following his lead role in the ‘Rocky’ franchise but revealed that he has “zero” ownership of the series and is “furious” as a result.
He explained: “I have zero ownership of ‘Rocky’. Every word, every syllable, every grammatical error was all my fault. It was shocking that it never came to be, but I was told, ‘Hey, you got paid, so what are you complaining about?’ I was furious.”
Sly believes that he is a victim of his own naivety as he did not want to upset any influential figures in the movie business at the time as he was trying to establish himself in Hollywood.
He said: “You don’t want to ruffle the feathers of the golden goose.”

George Alagiah has ‘tumour site’ at base of back from bowel cancer

OHMYGOSSIP — George Alagiah has a “tumour site” at the bottom of his back and has spent 18 months in “extreme pain” from bowel cancer.
Opening up on about his eight-year battle with the disease, the BBC newsreader, 66, detailed the results of undergoing more than 100 rounds of chemotherapy after he was first diagnosed with stage-four bowel cancer in 2014.
He returned to presenting duties in 2015, saying at the time he was a “richer person” for his fight.
The cancer returned in 2017 and he underwent further treatment before again returning to work, but in 2020 the news anchor said it had spread to his lungs.
He took a break from work in October 2021 and returned to work in April after months of treatment.
In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph (04.09.22) George said about the tumour site on his back: “It is near my L5 lowest vertebra. I’ve spent a lot of the last 18 months in extreme pain. There have been times when even lying down makes it worse.”
Asked if the cancer has spread to his spine, he said: “I don’t know if it is into my spine. It is very technical so you have to be careful.
“What I have is a tumour that is resting very close to the spine and, as far as doctors can make out, has eroded a bit of a vertebra.
“More importantly, it is sitting very close to the nerve and the aorta. Both of which are significant. That’s the one we are watching.”
George, who has been married for more than 30 years to wife Frances, with whom he shares two sons, said people hate talking about bowel cancer as it is “all about poo and bums”.
He went on: “But I have discomfort all the way from my mouth to my bum. And that becomes acute after three days of chemo. Usually by about a week later it is beginning to be better.”
George uses breathing techniques to calm himself and help deal with the pain caused by the tumour and said he shared his experience of the disease with BBC podcast presenter Dame Deborah James, who died aged 40 following a five-year battle with bowel cancer in June.
He said they once spoke after she came out of an hospital appointment in which she found it had spread to her lungs.
Even though he told her to immediately tell her family, he said she spent half-an-hour on the phone to him.

Jane McDonald taking break from spotlight at end of tour after death of fiancé

OHMYGOSSIP — Jane McDonald is taking a break from the spotlight at the end of her current tour after the death of her fiancé.
The singer, 59, made the announcement following the passing of musician Ed Rothe, 67, who died in 2021 following a lung cancer diagnosis.
Jane told her fellow Loose Women presenter Kaye Adams, 59, on her podcast ‘How to be 60’: “I’m a lot better than when I was on Loose Women. I can talk about him now and just feel great that I had that amazing time with him.
“And it’s funny, we should talk about retiring because he retired at 59. And said, I promise you when you get to this age, you’ll see a difference. And I have. So we had lots of plans.
“And I think that’s part of grief as well is that you go through the normal grief and the terrible, terrible time and then you grieve the life that you thought you were going to have.
“So when he died, he took our future. So I think that is, I’ve got to have a different life now. And that’s taken a bit of adjusting to, but I’ll get there. Because that’s what do, we get there.
“It’s a shock when your partner becomes ill. And it’s just a shock to your system completely. And I think it’s made me realise actually, how many summers have we got left. And I want to do so much.
“I want to go on holiday, instead of filming one. I want to you know, I want to write, I want to be creative. I want to have time in my lovely home.
“You know, and I want to be here for my family. You know, my, my niece is just about to have a baby. And we’re all very excited about that.
“And I want to be around, I want to be around for them all just for a while to like sort myself out and then stop working as much as I do. Because I work constantly.”
Jane also said about her plans to take a two-year break from touring: “I’m not touring next year or the year after. So you’ve got an exclusive there because they only think I’m only doing one year, but I’m now doing two. Because I want to have a bit of downtime, I’ll still be doing all the TV shows. And that’s great. You know, I love that.
“But the touring I found now is harder than it used to be. And, and I’m thinking well, why? Why are you doing it, just have a bit of a break and see how you feel.”

The 26-year-old Latin champion is set to make her debut on the BBC One Latin and ballroom show this month, along with fellow newbies Vito Coppola, Carlos Gu and Lauren Oakley.

Charles, 73, and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, 75, are both huge fans of the competition, and Michelle believes the British royal would make a great dancer as he’s “good at leading”.

The new series of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ launches on Saturday 17 September on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Sue Barker was left ‘slightly damaged’ after A Question Of Sport axe

OHMYGOSSIP — Sue Barker was left “slightly damaged” after being axed from ‘A Question Of Sport’ after 24 years.
The 66-year-old TV presenter was given the boot by BBC bosses back in 2020 along with team captains Phil Tufnell and Matt Dawson after a decision was made to give the show’s line-up a refresh and Sue has now opened up about the experience – admitting she felt “wretchedly sad” and insisting it could have been handled better by those in charge.
In extracts from her book ‘Calling The Shots: My Autobiography’ published by Dailymail.co.uk, she explained: “After 24 years in the hotseat, I was sacked as the host of the BBC quiz show A Question Of Sport — and I’m afraid that has left me slightly damaged.
“Don’t get me wrong: I had no problem with being replaced. Everyone has their day. Producers must always have the right to refresh a programme and take it in a new direction.
“It was the way it was handled. It taught me there is actually no way of leaving a role in a nice, pleasant and helpful manner, with your head held high.”
Sue went on to explain rumours about a line-up change had been going around since 2016 but her contract was subsequently extended and she believed the team would be kept on again beyond 2020 so she was shocked when she was called into a meeting and told she had been sacked.
The TV star aded: “With me, there was a bit of ‘We love the show and you’ve been an amazing host, but . . .’ I’d been waiting for that ‘but’.
“We were being sacked. I accepted their decision, though I couldn’t help feeling wretchedly sad. The boys were devastated, too.”
Sue claims BBC bosses didn’t get in touch in the following weeks until news of their departure was about to break and she was asked to sign a statement stating the three stars had decided to “step aside” and she refused.
She went on: “As we hadn’t decided to step aside at all, we point-blank refused to sign the statement. Next, I was asked to announce that I was leaving for the good of the show. I was astounded. Was that because I was too old or not good enough? Either way, it was insulting. Did they actually expect me to sack myself?
“I told the BBC to own their decision and declare publicly that they wanted to refresh the show; I wasn’t going to lie to make it easier for them.”
Sue claims she was later offered her job back, but she declined and now says the way the issue was handled “stung more” than the actual departure.
The former tennis player has since decided to step away from all her BBC presenting duties after covering this year’s Wimbledon tennis tournament.
She said in a statement: “What a wonderful time I’ve had working on some of the biggest sporting events around the world. “I will miss it terribly but after 30 years I feel the time is right for me. I’ve worked with the best of the best.”
Sue has previously hosted coverage of events including hosting the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, World Athletics Championships, the London Marathon, the Grand National, Royal Ascot and ‘Sports Personality of the Year’.

It’d be a hell of a thing to see!’: Tim Roth is eager to see the Once Upon A Time in Hollywood extended cut

OHMYGOSSIP — Tim Roth says the extended cut of ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’ would be “a hell of a fun thing to see”.
The 61-year-old actor filmed a cameo as the butler of Emile Hirsch’s Jay Sebring, however, director Quentin Tarantino was forced to scrap his scenes due to it being four hours long.
Roth – whose son Hunter worked on the 2019 flick as an assistant – found it hilarious that regular collaborator Tarantino still gave him a credit for his axed scenes.
He told The Hollywood Reporter: “I didn’t even know that he’d done an extended version of ‘The Hateful Eight.’ When we did ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,’ it was just a cameo. I came and did a few scenes. He was so sweet about it when we talked, but the cut came out to be four hours long or something. So he had to make a decision about the characters he had to flow with, and so the other characters’ storylines, unfortunately, went by the wayside. All of those storylines were shot, so it’d be a hell of a fun thing to see. My son [Hunter Roth], who worked on it as an assistant, went to the screening at the Arclight, and he was like, ‘You got billing!’ It cracked him up because it said, ‘Tim Roth (Cut).’
“And that’s so Quentin. I actually love that. So if he does an extended version, that would be kind of weird and wonderful. It’d be something to see.”
The acclaimed comedy-drama movie – which tells the tale of a faded television actor and his stunt double who strive to reach acclaim in the final years of Hollywood’s Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles – starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie.
Tarantino previously revealed one of his favourite parts of the movie – where Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) and Trudi Fraser (Julia Butters) have an emotional phone call – was pulled from the final cut of the movie.
He said: “That was my favourite scene in the script. So the idea that that wouldn’t be in the movie was unfathomable. That was my favourite scene in the script.
“I think it was probably Leo’s favourite scene that he shot. We were in tears. It was the only time … I’ve gotten misty-eyed every once in a while when I was shooting this scene versus that scene. But that thing, I mean, Julia (Butters) was in tears every time we finished every take. We were just really proud of that sequence.”

Brendan Fraser suffered vertigo when he removed prosthetic suit for The Whale

OHMYGOSSIP — Brendan Fraser suffered bouts of vertigo when he removed the prosthetic suit he wore for new movie ‘The Whale’.
‘The Mummy’ star plays an overweight man who weighs around 600 pounds in Darren Aronofsky’s new movie and he had to wear a cumbersome costume to transform into the character with Brendan admitting he struggled with the suit onset and felt very strange when he took it off at the end of the day.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter during his appearance at the Venice Film Festival in Italy, Brendan explained: “I needed to learn to absolutely move in a new way. I developed muscles I did not know that I had. I even felt a sense of vertigo, when at the end of the day all the appliances were removed, just as you would feel stepping off the boat onto the dock here in Venice – that undulating feeling.”
He added: “And I say this because he gave me an appreciation for those whose bodies are similar because I learned that you need to be an incredibly strong person physically and mentally to inhabit that physical being. And I think that is (character) Charlie, also.”
In the film, Brendan plays reclusive Charlie opposite ‘Stranger Things’ star Sadie Sink as his teenage daughter and it marks his first leading role since 2013 film ‘Breakout’.
The actor previously spoke to Vanity Fair about why he took on the role, insisting he wanted a fresh challenge.
Brendan said: “If there’s no risk, then why bother? I want to learn from the people I’m working with at this point in my career. “I’ve had such variety, a lot of high highs and low lows, so what I’m keen for, in the second half of my time doing this, is to feel like I’m contributing to the craft, and I’m learning from it.
“This is a prime opportunity. I wanted to disappear into it. My hope was that I would become unrecognisable.”
