Marlon Wayans will defend White Chicks against cancel culture

OHMYGOSSIP — Marlon Wayans will walk “a thousand miles” to defend ‘White Chicks’ from cancel culture.
The 50-year-old actor starred with his brother Shawn Wayans in the 2004 comedy movie that followed a pair of FBI agents who go undercover as white women to foil a kidnapping plot.
The white face premise of the movie is now viewed as inappropriate by some but Marlon has attacked the concept of cancel culture in comedy.
He told Buzzfeed: “I don’t know what planet we’re on, where you think people don’t need laughter, and that people need to be censored and cancelled. If a joke is gonna get me cancelled, thank you for doing me that favour.”
The ‘Scary Movie’ star continued: “It’s sad the society is in this place where we can’t laugh anymore. I ain’t listening to this damn generation. I ain’t listening to these folks: These scared-a** people, these scared executives.
“Y’all do what you want to do? Great. I’m still gonna tell my jokes the way I tell them. And if you want to make some money, jump on board. And if not, then I’ll find a way to do it myself.
“I know my audience. My audience comes to my shows every weekend and they leave feeling great and laughing. One thing about the Wayans, we’ve always told the worst joke the best way.”
Marlon previously suggested that it was “white chicks” who found the film funny.
He said in 2020: “That’s how you know it’s a good movie. For us, I think a good joke in comedy is when the people you make fun of laugh the loudest.
“And what is beautiful is that we’re equal-opportunity offenders. It was a great exploration of gender, of race, of pop culture, and done with kid gloves so everybody could laugh. And I think that’s what makes it a cult classic to this day.”

In a statement, returning showrunner Russell T Davies – who was responsible for bringing ‘Doctor Who’ back to screens in 2005 – said: “I love this show, and this is the best of both worlds – with the vision and joy of the BBC and Disney+ together we can launch the TARDIS all around the planet, reaching a new generation of fans while keeping our traditional home firmly on the BBC in the UK.”
The series has previously only been available in the US on HBO Max and BBC America but the BBC’s Chief Content Officer Charlotte Moore explained that the upcoming specials and new series – which will see Ncuti Gatwa become the Fifteenth Doctor after Tennant’s tenure as the Time Lord – will ensure that global audiences will now be able to enjoy the show in the “way that they deserve”.
She said: “We are thrilled to announce this exciting global partnership with Disney who are the perfect partners to bring this very British show to the rest of the world. Russell T Davies’ vision for Doctor Who has always been out of this world and we are committed to ensuring that audiences across the globe get the opportunity to enjoy the Doctor’s epic adventures with the scale and ambition that they deserve.
“Joining forces with Disney will elevate the show to even greater heights and reach new audiences so it’s an extremely exciting time for fans in the UK and across the world.”
The streaming giant is thought to have more than 220 million subscribers around the world and Disney+ president Alisa Bowen, explained that the company is “so excited” to bring the “beloved franchise” to their platform and thereby offer it to more than 150 markets around the world.
She said: “We’re excited by the opportunity to bring new seasons of this beloved franchise exclusively to Disney+ and introduce the show to the next generation of audiences in more than 150 markets around the world. The series is a perfect addition to our ever-growing catalogue of global content that continues to make Disney+ the home for exceptional storytelling.”
On Sunday (23.10.22), viewers saw Jodie Whittaker’s time as the Thirteenth Doctor come to an end in the BBC centenary special episode ‘The Power of the Doctor’ only to be left stunned when the Time Lord regenerated into Tennant – who originally played the Tenth Doctor under Russell’s stewardship of the sci-fi show between 2005 and 2010.

James Gunn and Peter Safran land top DC jobs

OHMYGOSSIP — James Gunn and Peter Safran have been appointed as co-chairmen and CEOs of DC Studios.
The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ director and ‘The Suicide Squad’ producer will oversee the newly-formed Warner Bros. division, which is replacing DC Films, meaning they will now be in charge of DC’s film, TV and animation efforts.
The pair said in a joint statement: “We’re honoured to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were children.
“We look forward to collaborating with the most talented writers, directors, and actors in the world to create an integrated, multi-layered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved.
“Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equalled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent.
“We’re excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told.”
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav – who had been searching for a replacement for DC Films boss Walter Hamada – is “thrilled” to have appointed Gunn and Safran.
He said in a statement: “DC has among the most entertaining, powerful, and iconic characters in the world and I am thrilled to have the singular and complementary talents of James and Peter joining our world-class team and overseeing the creative direction of the storied DC Universe.

‘That’s not the way to make movies’: James Cameron voices criticism of Marvel and DC movies

OHMYGOSSIP — James Cameron is the latest director to take aim at superhero movies, slamming the way Marvel and DC blockbusters are made.
The ‘Avatar’ helmer has joined Martin Scorsese, Sir Ridley Scott, Francis Ford Coppola, and more in voicing their criticism of the genre, with Cameron taking issue with the characters all acting like they are college-age.
He told The New York Times: “When I look at these big, spectacular films — I’m looking at you, Marvel and DC — it doesn’t matter how old the characters are, they all act like they’re in college.
“They have relationships, but they really don’t. They never hang up their spurs because of their kids. The things that really ground us and give us power, love, and a purpose? Those characters don’t experience it, and I think that’s not the way to make movies.”
Scorsese caused a stir a couple of years ago when he said Marvel movies are “not cinema” and likened them to theme park rides.
However, he later clarified that his comments were directed at all superhero films, as opposed to just Marvel.
He said: “I said superhero films, I never – I don’t even know Marvel. I remember Marvel was a comic book.”
The 79-year-old director – whose filmography includes Mafia dramas ‘The Irishman’, ‘Casino’ and ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ and ‘Taxi Driver’ – also clarified his “theme park” comment, suggesting that studios have wanted films to become as important as Disneyland in American culture.
He explained: “I remember when Disneyland was built, I’m that ancient. One of the aspirations of the studios was to become as important in a sense to American culture as Disneyland.”
‘The Godfather’ director Coppola backed Scorsese’s admission that superhero films are not real cinema and called them “despicable”.
James Gunn – who is best known for helming Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ franchise – responded: “When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he’s right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration.
“I don’t know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again.
“Martin was kind when he said it’s not cinema. He didn’t say it’s despicable, which I just say it is.”
He went on to declare superhero films the western and gangster movies of today, whilst he admitted it’s fine that some “geniuses” don’t “appreciate” the movies.

Maura Higgins and Joey Essex spark romance rumours

OHMYGOSSIP — Maura Higgins and Joey Essex have sparked romance rumours after “getting flirty” at the Pride of Britain Awards.
The former ‘Love Island’ star, 31, and upcoming ‘Dancing on Ice’ contestant, 32, were spotted getting close at the ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House on Monday (24.10.22), and it’s now said they are planning to go on a first date.
A friend told The Sun Online: “They’ve met before on the celebrity party circuit but Monday was the first time things have turned flirty.
“They were flirting like crazy and all over each other. Eventually, Maura just grabbed Joey’s tie and pulled him in for a kiss, right in front of everyone. He loved it.”
Maura – who finished sixth on ‘Dancing on Ice’ in 2020 – and Joey were spotted leaving the awards ceremony in a taxi and are said to have been messaging each other “non-stop” since.
The friend added: “They did leave together in a taxi but Joey’s a gentleman so there was no funny business that night.
“He had to be at ‘Dancing On Ice’ training at 7.30am the next day anyway, so all they did was kiss and chat.
“There is a connection there — a real meeting of minds.
“They both fancy the pants off each other — it could be the start of something pretty special.
“Maura’s really keen for a date with Joey and they’ve been messaging non-stop since.”
Maura previously dated pro dancer Curtis Pritchard after hooking up with the star on ‘Love Island’ in 2019, while Joey was previously in a relationship with his ‘TOWIE’ co-star Sam Faiers.

The ‘Love Island’ star-turned-documentary maker admits she won’t enjoy not getting jiggy with her fiance, professional footballer Bradley Dack, when she is in Australia for the ITV show.
Asked what she will miss the most when she is Down Under, she said: “I mean, four weeks and no sh****** – what can you do?”
Olivia also admitted she will miss her dogs when she is in the jungle.
She added to The Sun newspaper: “It’s day one, so not much at the minute!
“But in three or four days the dogs and my fiance, probably.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Anton Du Beke and Giovanni Pernice are to star in a new BBC travel series.
The ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ judge and the professional dancer will swap the ballroom for the sun-kissed island of Sicily – where Giovanni hails from – for ‘Anton and Giovanni: Adventures in Sicily’.
Anton, 56, said: “When I first heard about this trip it was pretty irresistible. What’s not to love? It’s all my favourite things, great food, great country and spending time in the sunshine with Giovanni. Marvellous!”
Giovanni “cannot wait” for viewers to see him show Anton around the Mediterranean’s largest island.
He added: “To say this has been a dream project is an understatement!
“Taking Anton to my much-loved home of Sicily was simply Bellissima!
“We danced, we laughed, and had the time of our lives – with great culture, food and company.

The three-part series will see Giovanni be Anton’s guide as the pair discover what the island has to offer, from Mount Etna, to authentic old towns, and they will sample the local cuisine.
Mel Balac, Creative Director at BBC Studios, added: “Viewers will get to see Anton and Gio in a completely different light as we follow them on their road trip across Sicily.
“Alongside seeing the boys enjoy and experience everything that Sicily has to offer, viewers will also see their amazing friendship grow as they learn new things about one another … including some things that they would probably rather not let anyone know!”

Elijah Wood will star in Bookworm

OHMYGOSSIP — Elijah Wood is to star in ‘Bookworm’.
The ‘Lord of the Rings’ actor will return to New Zealand for the family-adventure comedy that will be directed by Ant Timpson.
The film tells the story of 12-year-old Mildred, whose life is turned upside down when her mother ends up in hospital and her estranged father Strawn Wise (Wood) comes to look after her.
In a bid to entertain the bookish child, Strawn takes Mildred camping in the notoriously rugged New Zealand wilderness. The pair embark on the ultimate test of family bonding in a quest to find the mythological beast known as the Canterbury Panther.
The potential for mishap is significant as Mildred has never been into the wilds and Strawn is more at home on the Las Vegas strip.
It is the second time that Wood and Timpson have worked together following the 2019 movie ‘Come to Daddy’.
‘Bookworm’ is currently in pre-production and will shoot on location in New Zealand in March and April 2023. Toby Harvard has written the screenplay for the flick.
The project is being launched at the American Film Market by sales agent Mister Smith Entertainment.
Timpson said: “Toby and I are always obsessed by fathers and their foibles, especially the traits that we’re afraid of having or displaying.
“‘Bookworm’ will be a love letter to the escapist 70s cinema we grew up with, non-pandering cinema where adults and kids enjoyed all the onscreen shenanigans equally.”
Mister Smith Entertainment’s CEO David Garrett said: “We just love the script, which is so reminiscent of the best of New Zealand cinema – with its smart, dry wit and heartfelt raw emotional energy – all set against a backdrop of the most beautiful landscapes imaginable.
“And the father-daughter relationship is so funny and engaging, it is impossible not to love them both, for all their faults.”

Julianne Nicholson joins cast of Dream Scenario

OHMYGOSSIP — Julianne Nicholson has joined Nicolas Cage in the comedy ‘Dream Scenario’.
The 51-year-old actress has boarded the cast of the new film alongside Michael Cera, Tim Meadows, Kate Berlant, Dylan Baker and Dylan Gelula.
The film will be written and directed by the Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli but it is unclear who any of the actors will be playing as almost nothing is known about the project.
Ari Aster and Lars Knusden are producing through their company Square Peg while Jacob Jaffke and Tyler Campellone are involved as producers for A24.
Julianne starred in the film ‘Blonde’ as Marilyn Monroe’s mother Gladys Pearl Baker and explained that she thought that the flick – which features Ana de Armas as the tragic Hollywood icon – would be more explicit than it actually was.
When asked about the sexual content in the film, she said: “I too thought it would be more explicit.
“I feel like I see much more sexually explicit or violent films regularly that are for seven/eight/nine-year-old kids to be watching, which is terrible.
“So much of what we see (in ‘Blonde’) is artistic and beautiful, but I wonder if it’s because the sex and violence here provoke feelings in us that are not normally what happens when we’re watching a more straightforward, R-rated movie. I don’t know if it makes people uncomfortable.”
The ‘Mare of Easttown’ actress revealed that the film had added significance for her as she was “obsessed” with Marilyn during her teenage years.
Julianne explained: “I was obsessed. I thought she was beautiful and tragic and kind of unknowable.”

Spitting Image axed

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Spitting Image’ has been axed.
The satirical puppet show was revived by ITV on streaming service BritBox in 2020 after 24 years away from our screens, but impressionist Matt Forde – who voiced former Prime Minister Boris Johnson on the programme, and was a writer on the series – believes it was “madness” not to bring the show back on ITV.
He told the i newspaper: “I thought it was madness not to have the whole series on mainstream ITV.
“They spent all that money bringing back this mega-brand only to hide it away on BritBox. It should have been on ITV, Channel 4, the BBC or Sky, where everyone could see it.”
A spokesperson for BritBox told the publication: “BritBox won’t be airing any additional original commissions due to the impending launch of ITVX. A ‘Spitting Image’ commission for ITV has not been confirmed or announced.”
Matt insists there is a “huge public appetite” for a show like ‘Spitting Image’.
He added: “There is a huge public appetite for ‘Spitting Image’ in this country. I just can’t believe it’s not on a mainstream channel at a time like this.
“It got crazy numbers when the specials were on ITV and the online figures were going through the roof.”
‘Spitting Image’ originally aired on ITV from 1984 to 1996, and in March 2020 the show’s co-creator and executive producer, Roger Law, announced it was returning for its first series in 24 years.
He said at the time: “I’ve refused to resuscitate ‘Spitting Image’ for years but when my pension ran out and my palm was crossed with silver what could an old man do?
“The new ‘Spitting Image’ will be global through a uniquely British eye, it will be more outrageous, audacious and salacious than the previous incarnation.
“With scandalous scripts and A-List characters, it will be the people’s programme!
“When Dominic Cummings finally gets the boot, ‘Spitting Image’ will give him a job.
“We’ve always employed weirdos and are sure Dom will be a great asset, he seems to hate politicians as much as we do.
“We will take back control from the likes of BoJo, Trump, Harry Meghan, Elon Musk, and Kim Kardashian. We will be dazzled and amazed by Jurgen Klopp and Beyonce, we will have regular weather updates from our roving reporter Greta Thunberg.
“The timing is right, the puppets are ready, the people have spoken. And the message for the doomsayers and gloomsters is, this autumn we will get BritBox done!”

Chris Kamara to front speech apraxia documentary

OHMYGOSSIP — Chris Kamara is to front a documentary about his speech apraxia diagnosis.
The 64-year-old star first revealed in March that he had developed the neurological condition, which has caused him to speak slower than he used to, and he has teamed up with ITV for the film.
He told the Daily Star newspaper’s Hot TV column: “I am doing a documentary for my condition.
“It is for ITV. We have been speaking to people with apraxia and dyspraxia. They are people who are worse off than me.
“It has been emotional, but I haven’t been nervous. Hopefully with this documentary we will open a few eyes.”
Chris is hoping his upcoming documentary will raise awareness of the issue.
He added: “I am hoping we can bring awareness to this issue. It’s something that people don’t know much about.
People who are suffering can’t get the proper help because it’s not available on the NHS. To get help you need to go private. So it’s really important to raise awareness about this.”
Last month, Chris admitted he “feels like a fraud” presenting live TV after his apraxia diagnosis.
The former footballer – who is affectionately known as Kammy – quit his role on Sky Sports’ ‘Soccer Saturday’ after 24 years in April, and while he has continued his television career by co-hosting ‘Ninja Warrior’, he feels he is not giving the “best” version of himself since being diagnosed.
He said: “I feel a fraud now in terms of broadcasting – I don’t bring to the table what I used to. I feel I’m doing these programmes and they’re not getting the best of me – they’re tolerating me, that’s how it feels. You take your old self for granted.”

Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo’s ‘hectic’ wedding planning

OHMYGOSSIP — Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo “wish they’d never bothered” planning their wedding after finding the process “so stressful”.
The ‘Made in Chelsea’ stars have managed to secure a wedding date and a venue ahead of their big day, but admitted it has been “really hectic” getting to that stage.
Jamie, 33, quipped: “Wedding plans are going badly. We’re getting a divorce. We actually hate each other. No, of course, I’m kidding!
“It’s just really hectic and my advice for anybody getting married is, ‘Don’t do it’. Stay single!”
Speaking to OK!, Sophie, 29, said: “It’s honestly so stressful, no, seriously, do not get married. We’ve got a date and a venue, so we’re getting there. It’s not been fun though.
“People keep telling me there’s a time that it’s going to get fun, but it’s not happened yet. Maybe nearer to the time.
“But my god, honestly, I wish we’d never bothered!”
In August, Jamie admitted he was excited for a big wedding that his new in-laws are paying for.
He said: “I want the big wedding. And her parents are paying for it. It’s a great combo. I want this. And in Spain, I found out that actually the groom can walk down the aisle first.
“Because I want that moment when the doors open, and everyone goes … I’m going to go … this is the greatest show! As Zac Efron.”
The couple revealed in December that they had got engaged.
Jamie wrote on Instagram: “I couldn’t think of anything better than spending the rest of my life with you @habboosophie.”
Sophie also shared the happy news, writing: “WE ARE GETTING MARRIED!!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with you @jamielaing.”

Ant Middleton: Liam Payne and Rebel Wilson are ‘good friends’

OHMYGOSSIP — Ant Middleton counts Liam Payne and Rebel Wilson as his “good friends”.
The former ‘SAS: Who Dares Wins’ chief instructor admits he doesn’t have “many” pals, but he says the 29-year-old singer and the 42-year-old comedian – who have both appeared on his Sky One show ‘Straight Talking’ – are among his close group of friends, admitting he is there for them and vice-versa.
Ant, 42, said: “It’s funny because I don’t get involved in the celebrity lifestyle too much. I’m too busy and don’t have many friends. But you attract like-minded people and Liam Payne and Rebel Wilson are good friends.
“We appreciate each other’s lifestyles. I’m there for them when they need me and vice versa. I love MMA and boxing so I incorporate my social life with going to a fight. Apart from that, my social life is pretty non-existent.”
While Ant doesn’t much of a social life, the former soldier and marine admits he wouldn’t be able to be on TV without his wife Emilie, who he has been married to for 17 years.
He added to the Metro newspaper: “When they say behind every good man is an even better woman, it’s so true. Because, without her, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do. But we’re so compatible.
“Emilie loves being there for the children. She didn’t put them into nursery because she wanted to raise them herself.
“I love that but in order for me to be me and pass the best version of me on to my children, I need to get out and test myself. So I’m very lucky. We’ve been married for 17 years now, together for 19 and we still have a good laugh together.”

Phillip Schofield reunited with Gordon the Gopher

OHMYGOSSIP — Phillip Schofield has been reunited with Gordon the Gopher.
The 60-year-old TV presenter was joined on the ‘This Morning’ sofa by the yellow gopher puppet, who he used to co-host CBBC show ‘The Broom Cupboard’ with, on Wednesday (26.10.22) to mark 100 years of the BBC.
Speaking to Gordon, who squeaks, Phil said: “There is a real treat. Yeah, I feel exactly the same. Have you been busy? No, so so.
“The cactus juice farm going well? Family good? Yeah, that’s good.”
Phil presented ‘The Broom Cupboard’ alongside Gordon from 1985 to 1987, before being replaced in 1988 by Andy Crane and puppet Edd the Duck.
As part of a segment on the ITV show to mark the BBC’s centenary year, Phil also opened up about how he often got into trouble when presenting the children’s show.
He said: “The first time I realised how much trouble you could get in by saying something I thought was quite innocent was when someone wrote in and said, ‘I’m going to the dentist,’ and I said, ‘Ooh, I hate the dentist.’
“I got thousands of letters from mums saying, ‘Do you have any idea how much power you have and you have just said that to my child?’
“It was like, ‘OK, you’ve got to take that on board.”
Phil went on to host Saturday morning show ‘Going Live!’ with the gopher and Sarah Greene.
What’s more, Gordon had a series named after him on CBBC, BBC One and BBC Two from January to March 1981, lasting 13 episodes.
In 2005, Phil appeared on ‘Room 101’ and attempted to consign Gordon to the past, but the audience opted against sending the gopher to the fictional location.

Sigourney Weaver wanted to play an ‘awkward’ character in Avatar sequel

OHMYGOSSIP — Sigourney Weaver made her ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ character more “awkward”.
The 73-year-old actress will play the adolescent Kiri in the long-awaited sci-fi sequel and revealed that she wanted to add some “awkwardness” to the character’s look
Sigourney, who played the role of Dr. Grace Augustine in the original ‘Avatar’ film, told Vanity Fair’s ‘Little Gold Men’ podcast: “I had a very early conversation with Jim (Cameron, director) about this, and he was very already committed to this kind of character, but who she was, what she was about was something we talked about at the beginning.
“When I first saw the pictures of my character, she was so perfect, every hair in place. And I said, ‘Jim, when you’re a 13, 14-year-old girl, that is not how you feel about yourself.’
“I was this tall when I was 11, so I was just like a big spider moving around, knocking things over. And I felt that it was a more difficult time for Kiri, especially because the family is uprooted in the beginning.”
The ‘Alien’ star worked together with the costume designers to make Kiri “awkward” and explained how she drew on her teenage experiences to bring the character to life on screen.
Sigourney said: “I got together with the designers or the drawers and just brought some awkwardness. That’s what he ended up calling it now, ‘awkward Kiri’, as opposed to ‘perfect Kiri’.
“For better or worse, my awkward, self-conscious teenager was able to flow right into Kiri, and I had to work in a completely different way, which is kind of letting it flow into me, letting her – I don’t know that any of us is very far removed from our adolescent moment, because it certainly stands out in bold relief for a lot of people.
“I’m not sure how far I’ve gotten away from my teenager, but Jim said to me, ‘You can do this. You’re so immature. This is about how old you are anyway.'”

Michael J. Fox wants female Marty McFly for Back to the Future remake

OHMYGOSSIP — Michael J. Fox thinks ‘Back to the Future’ should be remade with a female Marty McFly.
The 61-year-old star played the character in the sci-fi comedy trilogy and hopes that a female star gets to take on the role if the franchise returns to the big screen.
Michael told Entertainment Tonight: “I actually had this thought that if they did the movie again, they should do it with a girl as Marty.”
It is nearly four decades since Michael first played the role in the original 1985 movie and is certain that another ‘Back to the Future’ film will be made as the franchise “connects with people on every level”.
The actor, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, said: “There’s something about it that connects with people on every level. I just feel like it will come around again.”
Michael revealed that he is still impressed by the passion that fans have for the movies – which were released between 1985 and 1990.
He explained: “What’s most amazing about ‘Back to the Future’ is that – and it has nothing to do with me – but it has this life.
“People don’t just like it and remember it, they celebrate it and embrace it and get my face tattooed on their leg, and I mean, it’s crazy but in a good way.”
The star continued: “I love it and I only recently have been able to embrace it in a way.
“Not that I rejected it before, or wasn’t proud of it, but I didn’t fully get how much people related to it, how much it meant to them.”
‘Back to the Future’ screenwriter Bob Gale had ruled out the possibility of making a fourth movie in 2020.
He said: “We told a complete story with the trilogy.
“If we went back and made another one, we’d have Michael J. Fox, who will be 60 next year, and he has Parkinson’s disease. Do we want to see Marty McFly at age 60 with Parkinson’s disease? Did we want to see him at age 50 with Parkinson’s disease? I would say, ‘No, you don’t want to see that.'”
