Leonie Elliott ‘quits Call the Midwife’

OHMYGOSSIP — Leonie Elliott has quit ‘Call the Midwife’.
The 34-year-old actress has played Lucille Robinson on the BBC period drama for six years – but Leonie has now quit the show, according to the Daily Mirror newspaper.
Lucille has not been seen on screen since the second episode of the current series, when she returned to Jamaica after suffering a depressive episode.
The midwife suffered a miscarriage amid the rise of racial violence inspired by the ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech by Enoch Powell, a Conservative MP.
Leonie seemingly hinted at her exit from the show after shooting her final scene.
The actress said on social media: “This season was incredibly difficult to film. Thank you for all your kind words… Look after yourselves and each other.”
‘Call the Midwife’ has been renewed all the way until 2026, which will take the story up to 1971 and the next series will feature fan favourites like Trixie, Matthew, Cyril and Sister Monica Joan, who is played by Judy Parfitt.
Olly Rix, who plays Matthew, has already insisted that he and his on-screen wife won’t be fleeing Poplar.
He said: “Their focus is on changing things around them. It doesn’t seem to be remotely in their characters to just hang that all up now and enjoy the quiet life. That’s not who they are.”
Helen George, who plays Trixie, doesn’t see them moving away, either.
She said: “They’ve got so much work to do there and they’re both very driven, so I can’t see them moving away.”

Jerry Bruckheimer credits Top Gun: Maverick with ‘uniting’ film fans

OHMYGOSSIP — Jerry Bruckheimer believes ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ “united” film fans.
The 79-year-old producer worked on the long-awaited ‘Top Gun’ sequel and believes that it was so successful as it appealed to audiences regardless of background or worldview.
Speaking to JoBlo.com, Jerry said: “It was the first picture for an older audience that brought people back to theatres and in droves across the world.
“It set a record for streaming. It shows you can have good entertainment to watch in a theatre and go home and watch it and buy it. Sales of the DVD were through the roof.
“You can’t tell how many people went to see the movie more than once. ‘Maverick’ captured the zeitgeist of the world. It’s not red state or blue state. It united everyone around the world.”
Jerry believes that the success of the film provided fresh hope for an industry that had suffered during the coronavirus pandemic.
He said: “I think the movie’s success gave hope that other movies will draw people into theatres. ‘Top Gun’ made it safe. It’s about movies that audiences had forgotten about during the lockdown.”
Tom Cruise set up flying sequences for other cast members to make the movie as realistic as possible but Jerry was concerned about the dangers of the stunt work.
Jerry – who has produced films such as ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ – told Variety: “The biggest scare for me as a producer is all the aerial work we did, how dangerous it was.
“We had the best pilots in the world flying with our actors, but things happen, and you have to trust the expertise of the people we were working with. And, knock wood, we didn’t have any problems.”

Guy Ritchie would love to direct Aladdin sequel

OHMYGOSSIP — Guy Ritchie hopes to direct an ‘Aladdin’ sequel.
The 54-year-old filmmaker helmed the 2019 live-action adaptation of the Disney movie and is hoping to return for another movie after the first outing proved successful at the box office.
Asked if he wants to make a sequel, Guy told Collider: “I’d very much like to.
“I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed that experience. It was a great experience. That whole Disney thing, as you can imagine, is such a professional outfit. Just from that perspective, it was so much fun.
“I would very much like to, we’ll wait and see. We have been kicking some ideas around for some time now, but it’d be great to do, it would be great to get back there.”
It was reported last month that Will Smith is set to reprise his role as the Genie in the ‘Aladdin’ sequel in what will be one of his first roles since he slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars last year.
It is said that the ‘King Richard’ actor will have an even bigger part than he did in the first film.
An insider said: “This would be one of the first movies Will has shot since the Oscars slap and it is quite surprising, given that it will be for a kids’ film.
“He has done a lot of work on himself and the consensus is that it will all be very much in the past by the time the movie is released.
“The first film was a huge success so it would be silly not to make another, and it would be a real shame to have to re-cast Will over what happened.
“So Disney is keen to stand by him and bring him back into the fold.”

Helen George ‘surprised’ by Call the Midwife’s renewal

OHMYGOSSIP — Helen George felt surprised when ‘Call the Midwife’ was renewed for two more seasons.
The 38-year-old actress – who plays Trixie Franklin on the BBC drama – has revealed that she and the other cast members were preparing for the show’s finale when the news was announced.
She told RadioTimes.com: “We had no idea. We found out the day before it came out in the press, so it was pretty last minute. It was a surprise. We had no idea.
“All of us had been saying, ‘Well, this is the last year.’ We’d all been planning for the end. So it was a complete shock. And also now they’re married as well, it’s really interesting the next few years with what happens with Matthew and Trixie.”
The first series of ‘Call the Midwife’ aired in 2012, and Heidi Thomas – the creator of the hit period drama – previously admitted to being amazed by the show’s success.
The 60-year-old writer recalled being in “shock” when she heard that millions of people were watching the first series.
Heidi shared: “I think we were all hugely surprised by the popularity of the show. Simply because for a very long time before we started to film it people told us nobody would watch it. They used to say young women will be frightened by it, older women will be disgusted by it, men won’t watch it at all, and I used to think well nobody will watch this show.
“The very first time it went out we got eight million overnight viewers and I think we were in a sort of shock.”

Channel 4 to screen two-part Paula Yates documentary

OHMYGOSSIP — Paula Yates’ life will be the focus of a new two-part documentary from Channel 4.
The upcoming programme will feature four previously-unheard interviews with the TV presenter and journalist, who died of an accidental heroin overdose in September 2000, aged 41.
Shaminder Nahal, the head of specialist factual at Channel 4, said: “Paula Yates exploded onto our screens in the very first week that Channel 4 came on air in 1982, a whirlwind of wit, verve and charisma – a totally unique style.
“Looking at what she achieved now, it feels like no one has ever quite matched her as a TV presenter.
“So as Channel 4 reflects on 40 years, it feels right to look at her life and career, and what an impact she made.
“As ever, (documentary producers) Curious Films has made a riveting and sensitive series that will, I hope, introduce Paula to a new generation.”
Yates hosted shows such as ‘The Tube’ and ‘The Big Breakfast’ during her TV career.
However, she was also well-known for her marriage to Bob Geldof and her relationship with Michael Hutchence, the lead singer of Australian rock band INXS.
Charlene Chika Osuagwu, a producer at Curious Films, said: “Paula’s battle to ‘have it all’, torn between the duties of family life and her own personal career and happiness in the magnifying glare of a world determined to judge her, provide a powerful lesson for today’s world and women fighting the same issues 40 years later.”
The documentary – which features interviews recorded in 1998 and 1999 – is due to air on Channel 4 in March.

Spencer Matthews hopes to find his brother’s body on Mount Everest

OHMYGOSSIP — Spencer Matthews wants to find his brother’s body on Mount Everest.
Michael Matthews disappeared on the mountain in 1999, and Spencer is determined to find his body for the sake of his mum.
The 34-year-old TV star – who has created a documentary of his search – told The Sunday Times newspaper: “He’s frozen in time. I’m his big brother now. I was unable to stop thinking about it. I wanted to bring him home for my mum.”
Michael actually became the youngest Briton to reach the top of the mountain, at just 22 years old. However, he disappeared hours later.
Spencer – whose documentary is called ‘Finding Michael’ – shared: “I found the idea unbearable of him being out there on the mountain, alone, with people walking past him en route to the summit.
“I’m not the most emotional person but the nearer we got to the mountain, the more potent my feelings became. It’s the closest I’ve felt to Mike since his death.”
Spencer teamed up with Bear Grylls and mountaineer Nirmal ‘Nims’ Purja to film the documentary.
And Bear previously warned Spencer to take care of himself on the mountain.
He said: “Stay safe. If you get hold of Mike, I hear his voice screaming that one loud.
“On average seven people attempting Everest lose their life. No mountain is worth dying for a second time over.”
Speaking about his reasons for undertaking the journey, Spencer said: “Michael was my big brother. 20 odd years later we are sent this photograph of a body, it looks like it could be Michael.
“My heart says we should go and find him. And if we can, bring him home. We need the best people possible. We have one of the greatest, Nims Purja. We have to look all over the mountain.”

Cocaine Bear writer Jimmy Warden is stunned that the movie got made

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Cocaine Bear’ screenwriter Jimmy Warden is shocked that the film got made.
The writer has penned the script for Elizabeth Banks’ new movie about a bear that goes on the rampage after ingesting a bag full of cocaine and reflected on how the project gained momentum after the early pitches to studios.
Speaking to IndieWire, Jimmy said: “I think everybody was like, ‘OK… great,’ when I was writing the movie, like, ‘Good luck with that,’ and then as it just kept gaining momentum, they have gotten pretty excited.”
The screenwriter realised that the movie, which is loosely based on a true story, had a chance of being successful when he explained the plot to his family.
Warden said: “I actually will say, to their credit, when I pitched it to (my family) – you know, because you go home for Thanksgiving or whatever it is and they’re like, ‘What are you working on?’ and I was like, ‘Well, I do have this idea for this movie called ‘Cocaine Bear’ – they were really into it. So, at that point, that was a pretty good sign.”
The movie is based on drug smuggler Andrew C. Thornton II dumping a batch of cocaine from his plane in 1985, where it landed in Georgia and was eaten by the bear – which died immediately – and Jimmy stumbled on the story by accident.
He recalled: “I was just scrolling through the internet, doing absolutely nothing. I should have been working probably, and I was sitting at my desk, not looking for a movie idea.
“I was just like, ‘F*** me, let’s just get through the day.’ And then I found the story of Andrew Carter Thornton and the Cocaine Bear, and then I just couldn’t stop clicking on links. I was like, ‘OK, this has to be a movie.'”

John Williams has completed score for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

OHMYGOSSIP — John Williams has finished the score for ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’.
The legendary composer is providing the soundtrack for the upcoming blockbuster and “had fun” on his return to the ‘Indiana Jones’ franchise as he worked on new material for the character of Helena Shaw – who is played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
John told Variety: “It’s certainly got to be an hour and a half of music, maybe more. But I’m quite happy with it. There’s a lot of new material. The old material works very well as a touchstone of memory, but I had great fun, and I have a theme that I’ve written for Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the wonderful actress.”
Harrison Ford is reprising his role as Indiana Jones for a final time and John praised his and Waller-Bridge’s performances as well as the script that has been written by director James Mangold alongside Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth.
The 91-year-old composer – who has provided music for the ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Harry Potter’ film franchises – said: “Harrison is wonderful in it. He looks great, he moves beautifully.
“The best part of it for me is the writing and the interplay of dialogue between Harrison and Phoebe, like the old-style Hepburn-and-Tracy kind of bickering. It’s witty and bright and snappy, like a duet that goes on for two hours.”
John has collaborated with director Steven Spielberg for nearly 50 years and reflected on working on the iconic filmmaker’s personal movie ‘The Fabelmans’ – which had extra poignancy as he knew Spielberg’s parents Leah and Arnold, who both inspired the film.
He said: “I felt like I was being invited into an inner-family, close-circle discussion of their lives together. The fact that Steven was dealing with something so personal, combined with the fact that I knew them both.”

Courteney Cox thought Kirby Reed died in Scream 4

OHMYGOSSIP — Courteney Cox thought Hayden Panettiere’s character was dead before ‘Scream 6’ return.
The 58-year-old actress reprises her role as newswoman Gale Weathers in the latest instalment in the iconic slasher franchise and her character will be reunited with Hayden’s alter ego Kirby Reed, who fans previously thought had fallen victim to Ghostface at the end of 2011’s ‘Scream 4’.
Reflecting on where Gail is in the new movie, Cox told Variety: “She still lives in New York, which is great because now the killer’s in New York, just as Sam and Tara have moved there. It kind of fell right into her lap.
“She wrote a book afterward. She told Sam that she wouldn’t and then of course she did because I mean, someone was going to do it. So, she had to.
“Kirby comes — Hayden Panettiere. It’s so interesting how people came back. I have to remember. I thought she died! I get so confused. There’s been so many. I’m just so excited to be a part of something this long.”
Cox will be joined by Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera as half-sisters Tara and Sam Carpenter, while Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding are also back as twins Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin.
However, she’ll be without long-running ‘Scream’ co-star Neve Campbell, who chose not to return as Sidney Prescott over issues with her contract offer for the film.
Cox said: “I missed working with her, but I’m going to support whatever she feels is right.
“I have a really good scene with Ghostface and it was amazing.
“I’ve obviously been stabbed many times and all that, but this time, to work with Ghostface and not know who’s under the mask, it was a really fun. Usually by the time I’m getting stabbed, I know who it is.”

Lucy Fallon ‘can’t really remember life’ before motherhood

OHMYGOSSIP — Former ‘Coronation Street’ star Lucy Fallon “can’t really remember life” before motherhood.
The 27-year-old actress – who played Bethany Platt on the ITV soap until 2020 – welcomed her first child into the world last month, a son named Sonny, and she feels like the time before his arrival is a “blur”.
Lucy told OK! magazine: “It feels so long ago now. We can’t really remember life before Sonny – it feels like a blur.”
The star gushed about how her little one is the “image” of his father, her footballer boyfriend Ryan Ledson, 25, a midfielder for Preston North End, joking he looks like him “especially when he’s grumpy”.
She said: “Sonny is the image of Ryan, especially when he’s grumpy! He’s too young for us to know his personality just yet, but he seems quite chilled overall.
“He only really cries when he needs his nappy changing, which Ryan has taken on as his nighttime job – he’s become a pro nappy changer!”
Lucy admitted she was initially keen to name the little one Fox.
She said: “I kept adding names to a list, so we had it set in stone ages ago, which is good because I’m usually indecisive. I liked quite a lot of names Ryan didn’t. Some of them were a bit out there, like Fox.”
But Ryan insisted there was “no chance” any child of his was going to be named after the sly animal.
He said: “When you’re from Liverpool, there was just no chance – he would get ribbed non stop. As the weeks were going on in the pregnancy, we were calling him Sonny.”

“I’m knitting a high funnel sweater immediately.”
In series one – which was filmed at a Scottish castle, and has been watched 34 million times on BBC iPlayer – three Faithfuls, Aaron, Hannah and Meryl, outsmarted the Traitors and took home a third each of the £101,050 prize pot.
