Match of the Day will air without presenters, pundits, or commentators

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Match of the Day’ will air without presenters, pundits, or commentators on Saturday (11.03.23) night.
On Friday (10.03.23), the BBC announced Gary Lineker would be “stepping back” from the show following a row over impartiality – which began when he tweeted to criticise Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s asylum policy and likened the language used by ministers to “that used by Germany in the 30s” – and as a result, a number of his colleagues, including Ian Wright, Alan Shearer, Micah Richards, Alex Scott and Jermaine Jenas all said they would not appear on the programme either in a mark of solidarity.
And the BBC have now announced the football highlights show this week will instead “focus on match action”.
A spokesperson said in a statement: “Some of our pundits have said that they don’t wish to appear on the programme while we seek to resolve the situation with Gary.
“We understand their position and we have decided that the programme will focus on match action without studio presentation or punditry.”
As well as the presenters and pundits ruling themselves out of the show, commentators Steve Wilson, Conor McNamara, Robyn Cowen and Steven Wyeth shared a joint statement online, saying they “do not feel it would be appropriate to take part in the programme”.
They added: “As commentators on MOTD, we have decided to step down from (Saturday’s) broadcast.
“We are comforted that football fans who want to watch their teams should still be able to do so, as management can use World Feed commentary if they wish.
“However, in the circumstances, we do not feel it would be appropriate to take part in the programme.”
In addition, the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) have spoken to all Premier League clubs to establish a collective position after a number of players were believed to have sought advice on wishing to support Gary by not fulfilling media duties with the BBC after today’s games and have been told they will be given support, Sky News reports.
Following the news of Gary’s absence from the show, his friend Ian Wright was the first to say he would act in “solidarity”.
He tweeted: “Everybody knows what Match of the Day means to me, but I’ve told the BBC I won’t be doing it tomorrow. Solidarity.”
He was followed by Alan Shearer, who said: “I have informed the BBC that I won’t be appearing on MOTD tomorrow night”.
Jermaine and Micah both confirmed they weren’t “due to be working” on the show this weekend but wouldn’t appear if they were asked, while Alex tweeted a GIF of Bernie Sanders saying: “Nah! Not me.”
The BBC had said Gary would be “stepping back” until a “clear” position on the 62-year-old former footballer’s social media use was reached.
They said in a statement: “The BBC has been in extensive discussions with Gary and his team in recent days. We have said that we consider his recent social media activity to be a breach of our guidelines.
“The BBC has decided that he will step back from presenting ‘Match of the Day’ until we’ve got an agreed and clear position on his use of social media.
“When it comes to leading our football and sports coverage, Gary is second to none. We have never said that Gary should be an opinion-free zone, or that he can’t have a view on issues that matter to him, but we have said that he should keep well away from taking sides on party political issues or political controversies.”
Gary hasn’t directly commented on the news but his friend Dan Walker claimed on ‘5News’ he had received a text from him saying the BBC had “told” him to step back, rather than it being his decision.

Nicolas Cage discusses forgotten Superman film

OHMYGOSSIP — Nicolas Cage “doesn’t need” to be of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The 59-year-old was tipped to play the title role in ‘Superman Lives’ in the 1990s before the movie was eventually shelved and explained that it never happened even though he was sure it would be a “bullseye to hit” and he pushed for Tim Burton to direct.
He told Variety: “They wanted Renny Harlin to do the movie. I sat down with Renny. I was doing another picture, he came to the trailer and we talked. I liked Renny… but I thought if I’m going to do this, it’s such a bullseye to hit.
“I said, this has to be Tim Burton. I called Tim and said, ‘Would you do this?’ Tim didn’t cast me, I cast Tim, and Tim said yes. I loved what he did with Michael [Keaton] and Batman, and I was a big fan.
“It was more of a 1980s Superman with like, the samurai black long hair. I thought it was gonna be a really different, sort of emo Superman, but we never got there.”
Meanwhile, the’Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’ star actor – whose real name is Nicolas Kim Coppola – took his stage surname from Marvel character Luke Cage but understands the “frustration” of the franchise these days and insists he does not feel the need to star in it in any capacity.
He added: “I’ve gotta be nice about Marvel movies, because I named myself after a Stan Lee character named Luke Cage. What am I going to do, put Marvel movies down? Stan Lee is my surrealistic father. He named me. I understand what the frustration is. I get it. But I think there’s plenty of room for everybody. I’m seeing movies like ‘Tár.’ I’m seeing all kinds of artistic and independently driven movies. I think there’s plenty of room for everybody.
“I don’t need to be in the MCU, I’m Nic Cage!”

Kit Connor to lead cast of new horror One Of Us

OHMYGOSSIP — Kit Connor will lead the cast of ‘One Of Us’.
The ‘Heartstopper’ actor will also be joined by Callum Woodhouse, Charlotte Hope, Siobhan Fallon-Hogan and Ian Beattie in the horror mystery, which will mark the debut of writer-and-director Stefan van de Graaff.
The 19-year-old star will plays Youngest in the allegorical film, in which he must search for the stranger in the group when members of a family begin dying one by one at a funeral.
‘One of Us’ will be produced by Raquel Baldwin, with Robert Machoian co-producing and director Stefan also executive-producing.
Filming is due to begin in Northern Ireland later this month.
Back in October, Kit was in the spotlight after he criticised fans for “forcing” him to come out as bisexual.
The ‘Rocketman’ actor made a rare Twitter post to clarify his sexuality after some people accused him of “queerbaiting” after he was pictured holding hands with ‘A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow’ co-star Maia Reficco.
Kit – who plays bisexual Nick Nelson in ‘Heartstopper’ – wrote: “Back for a minute. I’m bi.
“Congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself. I think some of you missed the point of the show. Bye.”
‘Heartstopper’ creator, writer and showrunner Alice Oseman threw her support behind the star in a powerful tweet.
She replied: “I truly don’t understand how people can watch ‘Heartstopper’ and then gleefully spend their time speculating about sexualities and judging based on stereotypes.
“I hope all those people are embarrassed as F***. Kit you are amazing.”
Olivia Colman, who plays the actor’s mother on the Netflix series, also shared her support for the young star.
She said: “I am so proud of him, but I am not proud of how people bullied him.
“I think people should be allowed to have their own journey. But I’m incredibly proud of him as a young man to deal with all of that and be in the spotlight. It’s unfair. But he’s amazing. He’s a very beautiful human being.”

Dermot O’Leary leading former X Factor favourites on Comic Relief song

OHMYGOSSIP — Dermot O’Leary will join a number of former ‘X Factor’ stars on a Comic Relief charity single.
The show’s former presenter is “front and centre” of the Red Nose Day track and is joined by some of the most memorable acts from the TV talent show’s 14-year run – which came to an end in 2018 – including Chico, Honey G and Stevi Ritchie.
Sadly, 2010 favourite Wagner was unable to get to the UK from Brazil to be part of the project.
A source told The Sun newspaper: “The X Factor has been off air for five years so what better time to bring back some of their most controversial acts.
“Comic Relief has created a band out of some of the singers and have put X Factor host Dermot front and centre.
“They spent this week ringing some of the show’s past performers and are enlisting the most memorable from the cast.
“Honey G the rapper from 2016 has filmed her part with Dermot, while Stevi Ritchie from 2014 has been approached — along with 2005 star Chico.
“It is the ultimate mega-mix of talent and they’ve got a real catchy hit in the works.
“Simon Cowell won’t be a fan of the end result but if it raises money for Comic Relief it’s definitely a winner.”
Meanwhile, it was revealed earlier this week that ‘X Factor’ boss Simon Cowell is in talks with Channel 5 to bring back the show.
A source said: “This would be a huge move for Simon, who carved out a TV career based on BGT and X Factor on Channel 5’s rival station.
“It would effectively see him turn his back on ITV after two decades which have seen him deliver them two of their biggest hits.
“There’s a strong sense that one chapter is ending and another beginning and Channel 5 are keen to be a part of that.”
However, it’s thought Channel 5 would need to pay a seven-figure sum to land Simon.
The insider added: “But they’d need to nail down a seven-figure contract to seal the deal to bring him across.”

Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won’t perform on the Dancing On Ice final

OHMYGOSSIP — Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean are unable to perform on the ‘Dancing On Ice’ final for the first time in the show’s history.
The skating stars – who serve on the show’s judging panel alongside dancers Ashley Banjo and Oti Mabuse – won’t be taking to the ice as usual after Jayne ruptured a bicep tendon during rehearsals for the performance and hasn’t yet recovered sufficiently to be able to even put her skates on again.
She told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “I don’t think I have ever had an injury that’s stopped me doing what we were meant to be doing before.
“We were three days from recording this routine, we had been working on it for weeks and weeks, we were more than ready to perform it.
“It’s like something being snatched away from you in the last second.”
The pair’s new routine would have been skated to Lady Gaga’s ‘Hold My Hand’ and they hope fans will get to see it eventually.
Christopher said: “It’s not the end of us yet!”
Jayne added: “We are hopeful it will see the light of day next season,” says Jayne.
Next year marks the 40th anniversary of their famous ‘Bolero’ routine, which led to them winning Olympic gold in Sarajevo 1984, and fans could get to see them perform the routine again – for the last time.
Christopher said: “You never know, there might be some version of it. We will sit down and talk with ITV, 40 years on is a milestone, we would be silly to miss that.
“It may be the last time!”
Jayne explained the injury happened during a lift, which led to a “dramatic” fall.
She said: “I had kind of tweaked my arm the day before it happened and just felt a bit sore, you get these odd pulls and strains and work through them.
“We were doing a lift that was part of our routine, and I said to Chris ‘Maybe we won’t do this today, this might pull on the tendon,’ and he said OK, and then I said ‘No, it’ll be fine, let’s just do it’ – and I felt it ping, it pinged like an elastic band and it was extremely painful.”
Her skating partner added: “Jayne came out of the lift in an awkward fashion, and I couldn’t help her, so we ended up crashing down into the edge of the ice rink, it was quite a dramatic exit. As you get older, falls hurt more, that’s for sure.”

Hannah Waddingham lands Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two role

OHMYGOSSIP — Hannah Waddingham will star in ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two’.
Director and writer Christopher McQuarrie revealed in a cryptic post on his Instagram account that the ‘Ted Lasso’ actress – who plays Richmond FC chairwoman Rebecca Welton in the Apple TV+ series – will be part of the cast of the second installment of his upcoming two-part adventure.
He shared a photo of Hannah on set along with the simple caption: “And Hannah Waddingham…#GodSpeed #DeadReckoning. (sic)”
It is unclear what role the former ‘Game of Thrones’ actress will have in the final movie in the franchise.
It was previously revealed the eighth film was being shot on board a US aircraft carrier in the Adriatic Sea, which is where the photo of Hannah appeared to be taken.
Tom Cruise is returning as Ethan Hunt in the final two movies, with ‘Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One’ due for release on 14 July this year, and the follow-up scheduled for 28 June, 2024.
He will be joined by familiar faces Simon Pegg (Benjji Dunn), Rebecca Ferguson (Ilsa Faust) and Ving Rhames (Luther Stickell), as well as Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, Rob Delaney, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss and Shea Wigham.
Vanessa Kirby will play Alanna Mitsopolis, an arms dealer who is the daughter of Max Mitsopolis, Vanessa Redgrave’s character in the original 1996 ‘Mission: Impossible’ movie.
Henry Czerny is making a surprise return as Eugene Kittridge, the former IMF director who also appeared in the first film.
Christopher previously teased the two-part adventure would see things pop up from Ethan’s past.
He said: “There are many things emerging from Ethan’s past.
“‘Dead reckoning’ is a navigational term. It means you’re picking a course based solely on your last known position and that becomes quite the metaphor not only for Ethan, but several characters…
“The first thing we knew was that if it’s gonna be a big two-part adventure, it’s got to be epic.
“It’s going to have to be the installment that swallows the rest of the franchise whole. There’s just not another way to do it.”

Courteney Cox: ‘Filming Scream 6 was strenuous!’

OHMYGOSSIP — Courteney Cox found the shooting of ‘Scream 6’ to be “strenuous.”
The 58-year-old actress has starred as reporter Gale Weathers in the spoof-horror franchise since its inception 1997 but is the only original cast member to return for its latest instalment and “missed” other characters during the production, as she noted that she has been “lucky” to have been part of several other long-running projects such as ‘Friends.’
She told ‘Entertainment Tonight’: “You’re so busy running or chasing Ghostface. I love this film. Of course, other characters are missed, but it’s so great, this movie. They did such a good job.It took a long time to film it was pretty strenuous, I might say, but it was fun. I’ve been lucky to do a lot of things for long periods of time. ‘Friends’ and ‘Cougar Town’ and ‘Scream’, it feels great to have family in every single situation
Meanwhile, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett expressed their “surprise” that the franchise – which returned to cinemas in 2022 after more than a decade away from the big screen – had managed to make a successful comeback.
Tyler said: “I think us and [writers] Guy [Busick] and Jamie [Vanderbilt], we approach it as fans and like, what would we want to see? And so, in a way, it’s a reaction to our own reaction, which is also a fan reaction..”
Matt added: “I think it was such a surprise to have Scream come back, to be involved in it, and I think we just knew that for as warm and comforting and as homage-y as the last one was, we had to take a really hard left turn for the next one, just to keep ourselves interested, right? To keep ourselves engaged and surprised. That’s always been the compass; what is thrilling and fun and exciting to us? And hopefully people love the same thing.”

Christine McGuinness: I worry about my autistic kids!

OHMYGOSSIP — Christine McGuiness “worries” about her autistic children.
The 34-year-old TV star has twins Penelope and Leo, nine, as well as seven-year-old Felicity with ex-husband Paddy McGuinness and was diagnosed with the neurodevelopmental condition herself last year but admitted that the more she learns about the disorder, the more she is able to “understand it.”
She told The Sunday Mirror’s S Magazine: “It’s better if you are prepared. I worry about my three autistic children. but the more I understand autism, the less scared I am because I can prepare for those things. I’m looking out for things that other parents might not look for because I know what to expect. I’ve lived through it myself but I’m researching and I am understanding it so much more now. ”
The former ‘Real Housewives of Cheshire’ star went on to add that awareness is the key to feeling “less scared” about autism as she insisted that she wants the “next generation” to be more clued up about what may happen to them in terms of autism.
It’s less scary if you are aware that your daughter might be at a higher risk of having episodes of feeling at a really low point when she is a teenager or at any point throughout her life. It can happen to anybody but if you know there’s more of a risk if your child is autistic, then you can be more prepared to deal with it. I want the next generation to be more aware of things that might happen to them.”

Keanu Reeves reveals most difficult John Wick scene ever

OHMYGOSSIP — Keanu Reeves says that the Arc de Triomphe car sequence was the most difficult scene to shoot in all of the ‘John Wick’ movies.
The 58-year-old actor has starred in the title role of the action thriller film series since its first outing in 2014 and now that the fourth instalment is out, he has revealed that he had a tricky time shooting various sequences in each movie so far.
He told Collider: “Let’s see, the first one that comes to mind was the horse sequence in Chapter 3. I would say, just as the first time, the assault sequence in Chapter 1. I would say the dance party fight in Chapter 2. And I would say probably it’s a tie between the Arc de Triomphe car sequence and the stair sequence in Sacré-Cœur.”
In the latest edition of the blockbuster franchise, Keanu is seen in the the Berlin nightclub at a party and went on to explain how he managed to shoot such a scene whilst several extras were dancing around him.
He added: “Well, you’re dealing with space and also you’re dealing on the strength of the people who are in the background in the sense of committing to it. Like, they had to keep dancing or be in the moment and kind of just ignore that fight scene that’s going on around you and in front of you. So that kind of cooperation, keeping the moment alive, and feeling authentic. So it’s really just practice, run-throughs, people getting used to the action around them.”
‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ is in UK cinemas now.

‘It’s an obvious metaphor!’ Adam Driver on getting 65 role during COVID

OHMYGOSSIP — Adam Driver got his role in ’65’ during the first wave of COVID-19.
The 39-year-old actor stars as Commander Mills in the science fiction action thriller film – which follows the aftermath of a catastrophic collision on an unfamiliar planet – and explained that he was cast in the part after the pandemic hit in March 2020.
He told Screen Rant: “What you’re describing was the appeal for me of doing something really big that has dinosaurs and laser guns, it’s a family movie, and everybody in the family can watch it together. Which seemed really important at the time when I got it, which was in the middle of the first wave of COVID. But also to do something that had those big set pieces, but really was about two people who couldn’t communicate and were going through something that is obviously outside either of their experiences.
The ‘Star Wars’ actor went on to add that the “metaphor” within the film seemed “obvious” at the time of shooting but also believed the movie was a “rare” opportunity for himself.
He added: “Which seemed obvious at the time with COVID, the metaphor, but also that they were battling externally what was going on internally, and it turned from two people processing in real time grief. Making two people from completely different walks of life, become found family but not really telling that story or landing it into the last moments of the film, which I thought was ambitious and a rare opportunity.
“We shot in New Orleans and then in Oregon. It’s a huge character of the movie. With the dinosaurs, obviously, it’s a guy dressed in green hitting you in the head with a tennis ball or that you’d have to imagine that. But it was massive in the danger, just one example there’s I guess it’d be crocodiles or alligators. I can’t remember the difference.”

“We have inspired youngsters, who are watching us and copying us. ‘All I can say about my final routine is that it’s the ‘Hunger Games’ of ‘Dancing on Ice’.

Brian Dowling reveals all about using his sister as a surrogate

OHMYGOSSIP — Brian Dowling thinks it is “important” that fans hear from his sister Aoife after she carried his baby,
The 44-year-old TV star welcomed Blake Maria Rose with husband Arthur Gourounlian last September after his sister carried the baby via surrogate and is now fronting a documentary to showcase the journey and explained that there was “no legislation” for surrogacy in his home country.
He told Chic magazine: “I think that we wanted to do the documentary to kind of showcase what it was like, in this day and age, to have a baby through surrogacy – especially in Ireland, in a country at the time where there was no legislation regarding surrogacy, and from a same-sex couple.
“Surrogacy affects loads of families. And I think that people probably won’t realise how emotional it really was and what goes in to all of that.
“They’re going to get a chance to hear from Aoife, to see her being interviewed and going about her day.”
Brian – who shot to fame when he won ‘Big Brother’ in 2001 – went on to add that while the process of the shoot was not “nerve-wracking”, it was still “scary” because he and his husband had to consider how “vulnerable” they would appear to be on camera.
He added: “Obviously, it’s part of the jobs that we do I started in reality TV when I won Big Brother in 2001. So it wasn’t that (it was nerve-wracking). What was scary was how open are we going to be? How vulnerable are we going to be? And how much are we going to share? But I think that we shared the right amount. We feel like being vulnerable can be a good thing, showing the emotion and how you’re feeling.” Arthur told how when they began the filming process, they said that “either we’re going to go in 100% or nothing!”
‘Brian and Arthur’s Very Modern Family’ airs on Monday March 13.

Why Tim Roth was ‘moved’ by the script for Punch movie

OHMYGOSSIP — Tim Roth was “moved” by the script for ‘Punch’.
The 61-year-od actor played the part of Stan in the drama film that centres on a teenage boxer who is training under the watchful eye of his demanding and alcoholic father and admitted he was touched by the script – which was written by director Welby Ings – because his own dad suffered from substance abuse issues.
He told Under the Radar magazine: “My father was an alcoholic, and he had incredible PTSD from the Second World War, from fighting in that war when he was a child, when he was 17 through for five years. His journey into adulthood was under incredible stress. He saw things that he could never talk to us about. He self-medicated. Which was something I saw in my character.
The script also dealt with homophobia incredibly well. T
“That was something Welby knew of personally. Something I recognized from growing up as well. My gay friends, the ones who felt they could speak to me, suffered greatly. The ones who were more open suffered physically. It was a very difficult time. My father would tell me: “Remember who was in the death camps alongside the Jews. Homosexuals. The Romani community. And anyone that was ‘the other.’ Always remember that. And that there’s a chance it could come back.” And that’s still rampant. So I felt the script was very moving. ”
The ‘Pulp Fiction’ star went on to add that his character “buries his feelings” but enjoyed that the “simple” drama filma ctually has a “complicated undertone.
He added: “My character buries his feelings, and has a complex relationship with his son. But he sees a way for his son to get out of the world they’re in and do something. Then, what’s central to the film: the buried sexuality of this boy, and how that emerges. There’s also a crossover into New Zealand’s Māori community. You have so many layers going on. As simple as it is — and I like that it’s simple — it is very, very complicated. So this script one of the ones you do for love, as opposed to keep the roof on. Immediately it was that.

Gary Lineker ‘to return to BBC’ after impartiality row

OHMYGOSSIP — Gary Lineker will reportedly return to the BBC next weekend after a deal was struck to get him back on air.
The footballer-turned-TV host was asked to step back from presenting flagship football show ‘Match of the Day’ last week in a row over impartiality after he tweeted criticism of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s policy on refugees – prompting a mass walk out of BBC pundits and presenters who stood by him – but now a new report suggests he will be back to present the BBC’s coverage of next weekend’s FC Cup fixtures.
A source told The Sun newspaper: “Gary will be back to host the BBC’s FA Cup coverage. A deal has been struck … the details of the deal are unclear at this stage.”
The row kicked off when Lineker took to Twitter to comment on video of Home Secretary Suella Braverman in which she presented a plan to detain migrants who crossed the Channel in small boats or remove them to either their country of origin or a safe third state within 28 days.
Lineker likened the language used by ministers to “that used by Germany in the 30s” and was later asked to step aside from hosting ‘Match of the Day’ for seemingly breaching the organisation’s rules on impartiality.
As a result, a number of his colleagues, including Ian Wright, Alan Shearer, Micah Richards, Alex Scott and Jermaine Jenas all said they would not appear on the BBC either in a mark of solidarity.
BBC bosses decided to air the programme as a highlights show without any presenters or commentary.
A spokesperson said in a statement: “Some of our pundits have said that they don’t wish to appear on the programme while we seek to resolve the situation with Gary. “We understand their position and we have decided that the programme will focus on match action without studio presentation or punditry.”
As well as the presenters and pundits ruling themselves out of the show, commentators Steve Wilson, Conor McNamara, Robyn Cowen and Steven Wyeth shared a joint statement online, saying they did not feel “it would be appropriate to take part in the programme”.
As well as having ‘Match of the Day’ cut back, bosses were forced to scrap planned episodes of ‘Football Focus’ and ‘Final Score’ while BBC Radio 5Live’s football coverage over the weekend was also axed as presenters including Mark Chapman declined to take part.
