Joaquin Phoenix set for ‘gay romance film’ set in 1930s LA

OHMYGOSSIP — Joaquin Phoenix is set to star in a new NC-17-rated gay romance movie.
The ‘Beau is Afraid’ actor will star in ‘Far From Heaven’ director Todd Haynes’ upcoming new project, which the filmmaker has described as a “gay love story” set in Los Angeles in the 1930s.
Speaking during Cannes Film Festival, he told IndieWire: “The next film is a feature that’s an original script that I developed with Joaquin Phoenix based on some thoughts and ideas he brought to me.
“We basically wrote with him as a story writer. Me and Jon Raymond and Joaquin share the story credit.
“And we hope to be shooting it beginning early next year. It’s a gay love story set in 1930s L.A.”
Haynes explained how Phoenix has been constantly looking to push the boundaries with the movie, which helped lead to its NC-17 rating in the United States.
As defined by the Motion Picture Association’s film rating system, the rating – which goes one beyond the R Restricted level – means: “No one 17 and under admitted. Clearly adult. Children are not admitted.”
It’s not known what the rating will be elsewhere in the world, with NC-17 falling somewhere between the UK’s 15 and 18 ratings.
Meanwhile, Haynes – who has worked on the likes of ‘Poison’, ‘Velvet Goldmine’, ‘Carol’ and new movie ‘May December’ – reflected on his upcoming schedule as he continues to make romantic period dramas, including those telling queer stories.
He said: “All I can do is just keep hunkering down and committing to each project. I have more features planned.
“I have also episodic projects coming that are planned, that are really exciting. I’m going back to work with Kate Winslet with something she brought me for HBO.”

Vin Diesel confirms female-led Fast and Furious spin-off is in development

OHMYGOSSIP — Vin Diesel has confirmed a female-led ‘Fast and Furious’ spin-off is in development and will be launched after the franchise’s “finale”.
The 54-year-old actor, who plays Dominic Toretto in the high-speed film franchise, also admitted there are other spin-off movies in the works.
He told Variety: “I started developing the female spinoff … in 2017 with other spinoffs, and the sooner I deliver the finale, the sooner I can launch all the spinoffs.
‘Fast X’, which was released earlier this month, is the 10th and latest movie in the series and is one half of a two-part finale, but Diesel admitted “it’s bittersweet to think of a finale”.
In October, Universal Pictures chief Donna Langley admitted she hoped to make a female-led ‘Fast and Furious’ spin-off.
In an interview with Business Insider, she said: “I would love to see a female ‘Fast’.
“So would Vin (Diesel). We have so many great and amazing female characters in our franchise and now there’s the new addition of Brie Larson to add to this incredible roster. I would love to see us do a female ‘Fast’.”
Several ‘Fast and Furious’ cast members have previously backed a female spin-off, with stars such as Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Nathalie Emmanuel and Dame Helen Mirren all featuring in the long-running series.
During a SiriusXM Town Hall to promote the release of ‘F9’, Brewster – who first appeared as Mia Toretto in the original 2001 film – said: “That would be awesome. I’ve heard these rumours. I think that would be incredible. Think about all the people we could bring back, right? We could bring back Eva Mendes, who’d be incredible to work with.
“It would be really, really cool. So, I can’t speak to the discussions, but I think it would be awesome. So, fingers crossed.”
Emmanuel admitted in 2022 she was “demanding” a female spin-off be made.
The ‘Game of Thrones’ actress told Digital Spy: “I want a girl spin-off.
“We find a way to bring everybody back, and we make a badass girl ‘Fast’ movie. I’m so here for that. That’s the ‘Fast’ spin-off that I want, that I demand!”

BBC has been looking for Sir David Attenborough’s replacement for decades

OHMYGOSSIP — BBC bosses have been looking for Sir David Attenborough’s replacement for over 30 years.
The legendary broadcaster and naturalist is returning to the small screen for new series ‘Prehistoric Planet 2’ for streaming giant Apple TV+, and the show’s co-producer Mike Gunton has reflected on the longevity of the 97-year-old star.
He told the Radio Times magazine: “When I arrived at the BBC, the head of department said, ‘It’s lovely this project is under way, and it’s really important because this is David’s last series. We now need to be thinking about who’s going to take over from him.’
“That was in 1987. If I had a pound for every time somebody said, ‘This is probably going to be David’s last series’, I’d be a very rich man.”
Meanwhile, Mike heaped praise on the presenter and his continued passion for “performing” on screen.
He added: “He’s still the great voice. He looks and sounds 30 years younger. He’s so on it. He still loves performing, being in front of the camera.”
His latest series is produced by the BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit, and takes viewers back in time thanks to incredible technology.
The show will treat viewers to sights of triceratops, velociraptors, pterosaurs and more to treat viewers to a look at the creatures roaming the Earth 66 million years ago.
Reflecting on the use of technology, Sir David said: “The extraordinary expertise that there is in Hollywood enables you to get answers to questions, but also to propose questions which you never even thought of.”
The TV icon previously vowed to continue informing and entertaining the masses with his fun facts for years to come.
He told The Sun newspaper: “How long do I plan to keep going? As long as I’m vertical and people ask me to do it.
“It’s a marvellous time, why would I suddenly say, ‘Don’t bother’?”

Ron Perlman and Rosanna Arquette cast in horror thriller Succubus

OHMYGOSSIP — Ron Perlman and Rosanna Arquette are to star in the horror thriller ‘Succubus’.
The duo will feature alongside Rachel Cook, Olivia Applegate, Derek Smith, Emily Kincaid and Finley Rose Slater in the film written and directed by R.J. Daniel Hanna.
‘Succubus’ tells the story of a new father going through a marital breakup as he joins a dating app and matches with a beautiful but mysterious young woman. Her powers of seduction and manipulation suck him into a mystery more terrifying than he could ever have imagined.
Shout! Studios are distributing the picture in North America with Todd Slater, Ari Novak and Anna Elizabeth James all serving as producers.
Hanna said: “‘Succubus’ is a first-and-foremost a wild and brazen mystery-horror film about the most terrifying series of events that could ever befall a guy who let his nether regions do the thinking for him.
“But beyond the body horror, which is ample, it also comments on the very real vampire that’s sucking us all dry – our screens.
“As our hero is drawn by an online siren into her dark yet enticing world, he’s forced to face all he’s left behind, his whole real, meaningful life beyond the glowing rectangle he keeps in his pocket, and try to find a way back to it.”
Shout! Studios’ Jordan Fields said: “My favourite horror thrillers are ones that have something to say about human beings, and in ‘Succubus’, Daniel has crafted a chilling metaphor for the clutch that screens have on us.
“This will disturb and resonate, like the best of our genre.”

Gary Lineker clashes with Richard Madeley during interview over political tweets

OHMYGOSSIP — Gary Lineker insisted he tries to use his platform “for good” as he clashed with Richard Madeley while being quizzed about his controversial, political tweets from earlier this year.
The ‘Match of the Day’ presenter was asked to step back from the show in a row over impartiality in March – prompting a mass walk out of BBC pundits and presenters who stood by him – after he tweeted criticism of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s policy on refugees in March.
On Tuesday’s (23.05.23) ‘Good Morning Britain’, Richard asked him how he now felt about one particular tweet in hindsight, but Gary hit back claiming Richard had “misrepresented” what he had said.
Speaking on ‘GMB’, he told the former ‘This Morning’ presenter: “I didn’t compare the government to the Nazis. I was talking about some of the language that is not dissimilar.
“All I was trying to say is, we can use kinder language.
“People who are fleeing persecution awful circumstances all I was saying was that we could use kinder language.”
The controversial tweet on March 7th came in response to a video message by home secretary Suella Braverman announcing her new Illegal Migration Bill, and in the video, she spoke about stopping people making “illegal journeys” crossing the Channel in boats.
Gary’s tweet read: “There is no huge influx. We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries. This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I’m out of order?”
What’s more, during Tuesday’s ‘GMB interview, Gary insisted he tries to use his platform “for good”.
He said: “I think I can, and I am, and I think it’s really important if you’ve got a big platform to use it for good that’s what I’ve always done and try to do. People who complain about this are often campaigners of free speech, you can’t have it both ways.”
In April, Gary told how he thought he had hosted his last ‘Match of the Day’ after the BBC decided he would “step back” from presenting the show until they had “an agreed and clear position on his use of social media”.
Asked whether he thought he’d presented his last ‘Match of the Day’ at the time, he told Men’s Health UK: “I guess I must have, because when they said I had ‘stepped back’ and the row was raging, it was hard to see how it got resolved unless they backed down.”
But Gary also insisted last month that his view was “factually accurate”.
He added: “When I sent that tweet, it honestly never even crossed my mind that it would lead to where it went. I’ve worked with refugees’ charities for years.
“So, when I saw the Suella Braverman film, I said I thought it was pretty awful. Then the ‘stick to football’ people weighed in and I replied to one of them, just saying there was no massive influx, the UK takes far fewer refugees than other European countries, this is a cruel policy, and the language used in the debate reminds us of the debate in Germany in the 1930s. I think that is factually accurate.”

BBC Radio 5 Live’s Naga Munchetty details ‘terrible pain’ due to adenomyosis

OHMYGOSSIP — Naga Munchetty suffers from “terrible pain” due to adenomyosis.
The ‘BBC Breakfast’ host detailed how she once “screamed non-stop” for nearly an hour due to the womb condition – which causes the womb lining to grow in the muscles of the womb and leads to severe cramping and heavy periods – back in September last year.
The 48-year-old broadcaster told her BBC Radio 5 Live listeners : “The pain was so terrible I couldn’t move, turn over, sit up. I screamed non-stop for 45 minutes.”
Naga explained she is still in “constant” and “nagging pain”, but she has opted to not have a hysterectomy for now.
She said: “Right now as I sit here talking to you: I am in pain. Constant, nagging pain.
“In my uterus. Around my pelvis. Sometimes it runs down my thighs.
“And I’ll have some level of pain for the entire show and for the rest of the day until I go to sleep.”
Naga also shared how the pain “changes”, and it can take her breath away at times.
She said: “Every so often the pain changes. It becomes a stabbing pain, a pain that takes my breath away and I can do nothing but sit with it for a minute or curl up to cope.”
Naga admitted she was “just unlucky” to have the condition – which is not life-threatening and tends to impact women over the age of 40, and is only found via routine screenings so diagnosis rates are low – and she invited other women onto her show to discuss the toll it was taking on their lives.

Denise Welch taking break from Loose Women

OHMYGOSSIP — Denise Welch is taking a break from ‘Loose Women’.
The 65-year-old star thanked everyone for her well-wishes on her birthday and revealed she is stepping back from the ITV1 daytime show – which she regularly appears on alongside the likes of Ruth Langsford, Charlene White and Coleen Nolan – to go “on a little adventure”.
She said in a video posted to Instagram: “Well… on today, on my 65th birthday, I want to say thank you in advance for all the lovely messages and comments that I’ve received.
“I’m going off on a little adventure for a couple of weeks so I’m going to be off here and off my phone. I don’t quite know how I’m going to cope, but I’m going to give it a try, so don’t think I have disappeared.”
Denise paid tribute to those mourning their mothers as her birthday marks the day she lost her own mum Ann, but called the day “a celebration of life”.
She continued: “It’s just a temporary little holiday. For those missing their mums, I’m thinking of you. It’s a full circle. She brought me into the world on the 22nd of May and she left the world holding mine and my sister’s hand on the 22nd of May, so it’s a celebration of life as well.”
Denise – who is mother to the 1975 frontman Matt Healy, 34, and his brother Louis, 22, with her second husband, actor Tim Healy – captioned the clip: “Thank you and au revoir for a couple of weeks!!! (sic)”
The former ‘Coronation Street’ star – who has been married to Lincoln Townley since 2013 – recently admitted she didn’t feel like a “little doddery old person”.
She told OK! magazine: “When I say 65, I think of some little doddery old person, whereas I certainly don’t feel like that now.
“When I was 60, I decided to flip the narrative in my head. You can either say, ‘Oh my God, I’m 60, I qualify for a bus pass,’ or you can say, ‘I’m only 60. I might have 30 good years ahead of me!’
“My dad, up until the week he died, was pretty much partying and I want to have that love of life and be as fit as I can be until I pop my clogs.”

Rochelle Humes thanks Phillip Schofield for being ‘fountain of knowledge’ on This Morning

OHMYGOSSIP — Rochelle Humes has thanked Phillip Schofield for being a “fountain of knowledge and laughter” on ‘This Morning’.
The 34-year-old TV presenter has paid tribute to her former co-star after he confirmed over the weekend he has departed the ITV brunch-time show with immediate effect after 21 years.
Rochelle wrote on Instagram: “I’ve proudly been a part of the This Morning family for almost 10 years and over the last few, it has been an absolutely pleasure learning so much from you
“Thanks for all the lessons – you’re a fountain of knowledge and laughter.. Big love @schofe (sic)”
Rochelle regularly guest co-hosted ‘This Morning’ alongside Phillip, including between November and December 2018 when his usual co-presenter Holly Willoughby was in Australia guest co-hosting ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’.
Her tribute came after Phillip confirmed last weekend that he had left ‘This Morning’.
He wrote on Instagram at the time: “I have always been proud to cover fascinating stories on This Morning. But recently, This Morning itself has become the story. Throughout my career in TV – including the very difficult last few days – I have always done my best to be honourable and kind. I understand that ITV has decided the current situation can’t go on, and I want to do what I can to protect the show that I love.
“So I have agreed to step down from This Morning with immediate effect, in the hope that the show can move forward to a bright future. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me – especially This Morning’s amazing viewers – and I’ll see you all for the Soap Awards next month.”
Just minutes after his announcement, Holly released a statement thanking her former co-star for his “knowledge, experience and humour” on the show’s famous sofa.
She wrote: “Hi everyone. It’s been over 13 great years presenting ‘This Morning’ with Phil and I want to take this opportunity to thank him for all of his knowledge, his experience, and his humour. The sofa won’t feel the same without him.”

Chris Hemsworth planning third Extraction film

OHMYGOSSIP — Chris Hemsworth is already planning a third ‘Extraction’ film.
The 39-year-old star is set to reprise his role as mercenary Tyler Rake in the Netflix action sequel and has set his sights on a third movie as he enjoys being in a franchise away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The ‘Thor’ actor told Total Film magazine: “I love it. I love playing the character. I love this world. I love having something else outside of Marvel that’s amassed a bit of a following, something more in the real world.
“I honestly feel like we made a better film than the first one. That’s rare in the franchise world. We’d be remiss not to have a crack at another one.”
Sam Hargrave is returning as director and echoed Hemsworth’s thoughts by suggesting that the franchise has plenty of mileage.
The filmmaker said: “There is so much room for this franchise to expand and places where it can go.
“I’m excited about what the next adventure for Tyler Rake could be. We’ll see how this one does. We’ll see how people feel and respond. And if the world is craving another Tyler Rake adventure, I think it’d be something I’d be interested in seeing put on screen.
“I have an idea, but I won’t give it away here.”
Meanwhile, Chris claimed last year that the next ‘Thor’ movie is likely to be the “finale” for his character.
The Australian actor has played the God of Thunder for over a decade in the MCU but thinks the time has come to bid farewell to the superhero.
He told Vanity Fair magazine: “I feel like we’d probably have to close the book if I ever did it again, you know what I mean? I feel like it probably warrants that.
“I feel like it’d probably be the finale, but that’s not based on anything anyone’s told me or any sort of plans.
“You have this birth of a hero, the journey of a hero, then the death of a hero, and I don’t know – am I at that stage? Who knows?”

This Morning pays tribute to Phillip Schofield

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘This Morning’s Alison Hammond has hailed Phillip Schofield as “one of the best live television broadcasters” Britain has ever produced.
The 61-year-old presenter recently announced that he was stepping down from ‘This Morning’ “with immediate effect” after more than 20 years on the show, and co-hosts Alison and Dermot O’Leary have both acknowledged that he’s played a huge part in the programme’s success.
Alison said: “Now, we can’t start today’s show without paying tribute to the man who spent the last two decades sitting on the ‘This Morning’ sofa, Phillip Schofield.”
Dermot continued: “So, as a show, everyone on and off screen at ITV and ‘This Morning’ wants to say a huge thank you to Phil for what he’s done to make the show such a success over the last 21 years.”
Alison also wished the veteran TV presenter well for the future.
She said: “Quite simply, we all know he is one of the best live television broadcasters this country has ever had. And we and all the team wish him all the best for the future.”
Dermot subsequently confirmed that Holly Willoughby – Phillip’s former co-host – will return to the show in June.
He said: “Holly has now taken a break over half-term. She’ll be back in the studio two weeks on Monday, on the fifth of June.”
Phillip announced his departure from ‘This Morning’ over the weekend.
He said in a statement: “Throughout my career in TV – including in the very difficult last few days – I have always done my best to be honourable and kind.
“I understand that ITV has decided the current situation can’t go on, and I want to do what I can to protect the show that I love.
“So I have agreed to step down from ‘This Morning’ with immediate effect, in the hope that the show can move forward to a bright future.”

Denise Welch loves her Loose Women co-stars

OHMYGOSSIP — Denise Welch hasn’t fallen out with any of her ‘Loose Women’ co-stars in “20 years”.
The 65-year-old actress has starred on the show alongside the likes of Ruth Langsford, Kay Adams, and Colleen Nolan since 2005, and Denise insists she has a great relationship with her co-stars.
She told OK! Magazine: “It’s great for me – it fits into my lifestyle, I love the girls. I know that every single day I seem to be ‘in a feud’, but I’ve never had a fall out in 20 years with any of the women on that show.
“I’ve never had an argument with any of them.
“Yes, we’ve had arguments on the set – that’s part of the show.
“Put it this way, I’m a woman’s woman. So, believe you me, I’d be out like a shot, and if ‘Loose Women’ was b***** backstage, I wouldn’t be there.”
Meanwhile, Denise’s son Matt Healy is the frontman of the band The 1975 and she considers him to be a “creative genius”.
She said: “My son is a creative genius and I say that not just because he is my son. I’m privy to so much of the work he’s done before he hits the stage, what comes out of his mouth and out of his brain.
“I just think, ‘Sometimes I can’t believe I gave birth to you. Where are you from?’ Louis and him are so supportive of each other. Their dad [Tim Healy] is a brilliant actor, so he has come from two very creative people.”
Denise also revealed she’s been swarmed by fans at some of her son’s shows.
The actress said: “It makes me laugh. I’ve always been very lucky that I’ve had quite a young fanbase.
“Obviously, now it’s become a thing that when I go to one of Matthew’s shows and there’s like 15,000 people there, a pocket of them spot me and then the ripple goes around and they all start screaming and waving.”

Will Young: I’d love to host For the Love of Dogs

OHMYGOSSIP — Will Young would “love” to host ‘For the Love of Dogs’.
The hit TV show was previously presented by Paul O’Grady – who died in March, aged 67 – and Will has revealed that he’d jump at the opportunity to host the programme.
Asked about the possibility during an appearance on ‘Lorraine’, Will replied: “Oh my god, I’d love to do that.
“That’s so weird that you just said that because literally, Paul – who is doing my hair and make-up today – said: ‘You should do Paul O’Grady … that show, ‘For the Love of Dogs’.'”
The show celebrates the work of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, and Will revealed that he actually lives very close by.
The 44-year-old singer – who won ‘Pop Idol’ in 2002 – said: “You know, I live in Battersea as well. Yeah. There we go – there’s our pitch. I’d love to do it.”
On the other hand, Amanda Holden is reportedly being lined up to host ‘For the Love of Dogs’.
The 52-year-old star is supposedly seen by TV bosses as the ideal successor to Paul.
An insider told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre TV column: “Execs just feel like it’s too soon to make firm plans about the series, as it’s barely been two months since he died. But the feeling at the home is that it’s what Paul would have wanted.
“After all, he cared deeply about the animals in Battersea.
“Amanda is the natural choice to take over the job, not just because she’s a seasoned presenter but because she also cares about the home and would do anything for them.”

Rupert Friend turned down James Bond due to his youth

OHMYGOSSIP — Rupert Friend turned down James Bond as he felt he was too young for the part.
The 41-year-old actor was approached about playing 007 when he was just 22 but believed that he lacked the “hard knocks” to take on the role of the iconic spy.
Rupert told Variety: “I was told, ‘We’d love to talk to you about playing James Bond, but rebooting the series. We want to do him basically straight out of college.’
“And I met Barbara Broccoli and her brother Michael and Debbie McWilliams, the casting director for Bond. Obviously I’ve watched them growing up and just love all the actors and all the movies.”
The ‘Asteroid City’ actor continued: “Basically they said: you’ll do a screen test, and if it goes well, you’re signed up for three pictures which you won’t read and you won’t know who the director is. You’re basically handcuffed to it.
“And I suddenly was like, ‘I just feel at this point in my life and career, I’m too young, I don’t have the experience, I don’t have the acting chops and I don’t have any of the hard knocks – emotionally, psychologically, physically – that a great Bond should have. So I’m gonna politely decline.’
“That was probably a bit of an eyebrow raise for them.”
Rupert confessed he is “grateful” that he turned down the part – which went to Daniel Craig – as he feared that he could have sunk the Bond franchise altogether.
He said: “To be honest, I’m grateful that I did. Because back then, not only could the part have sort of eclipsed me, I felt like the part was bigger than me as an actor or even as a person. That it would swallow me up and I might sink the franchise, or at least be the worst Bond that ever lived.
“And that was just not an option, because I love the franchise.”

Michelle Yeoh rules out Everything Everywhere All at Once sequel

OHMYGOSSIP — Michelle Yeoh has ruled out a sequel to ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’.
The 60-year-old star won the Oscar for Best Actress for her role as Evelyn Quan Wang in the movie but has ruled out the possibility of another movie.
Speaking to Variety at the Cannes Film Festival, Michelle said: “There’s no sequel. We would just be doing the same thing.”
The ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ star became the first Asian to win the Best Actress Oscar and hopes that her success creates a path forward for both herself and others.
Yeoh said: “The most important thing it has done is it has generated such pride with our people.
“The day I won I honestly heard the roar of joy that came from that corner of the world. It’s been slowly moving in that way and this has pushed the door open and it’s not shutting behind me… When there’s so few roles in the past it’s so competitive. If you get the job, I don’t get the job.
“But now we have to change the mindset. If I’m successful, you can be successful.”
Michelle also addressed the double standards in the movie industry as men are given more chances than women even if their projects flop.
She said: “There are mega films that suffer terrible losses, yet they still go and keep doing the same thing.
“It’s the studios thinking that’s their comfort zone: these movies, the budgets get bigger and they feel more violence, the more CGI will make it better – but the truth of the matter is it’s not.
“It’s really storytelling. In ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, even though we travelled the multi-verses, the main theme was love.”

Rachel McAdams ‘doesn’t think’ she’ll appear in the Mean Girls movie musical

OHMYGOSSIP — Rachel McAdams “doesn’t think” she’ll appear in the ‘Mean Girls’ musical movie.
The 44-year-old actress portrayed Regina George in the cult classic and though she’s excited to see writer Tina Fey’s new take on the beloved film, she isn’t expecting to be part of it.
Asked if she’ll cameo in the film, she said: “I don’t think it’s gonna happen. It’s a new take on the story and I’m excited to see what Tina has got up her sleeve this time around and how she’ll update it.
“But I don’t know. I wish I could give you a definitive answer.”
But Rachel is hoping to land another role in a musical one day after having such a great time previously making ‘Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga’.
She laughed: “That was so much fun! I would love to do something like that again.
“I fell in love with acting because of ‘Cats’ when I was eight, so musicals will always be in my blood.”
Rachel’s ‘Mean Girls’ co-star Amanda Seyfried recently admitted she was keen to star in the musical film.
Amanda – who played Karen Smith – told ‘Entertainment Tonight’: “It’s not really up to us anymore … It would be nice to hang out. I just think that this legacy has just broken all records. Everything that Tina [Fey] keeps doing, just putting it in a different way with the Broadway show, so amazing.
“Who wouldn’t want to be a part of it? It’s nice. But all of us are 100 percent into it. Maybe the mothers of our characters? That’s what I was thinking, but listen, I have not even seen the script.”

Fast 10 composer compares scores to Lord of the Rings and Star Wars

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Fast X’ composer Brian Tyler has compared his work on the franchise to ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Star Wars’.
The 51-year-old composer – who has scored seven instalments in the ‘Fast and Furious’ film series as well as working on the likes of ‘Rambo’, ‘Avengers: age of Ultron’ and ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ over the years – has opened up on his approach to the soundtrack.
He told Collider: “It’s done in a way that I feel like I’m doing it with – it’s, stylistically, like a ‘Lord of the Rings’ or ‘Star Wars,’ but in terms of how the structure of the music is.
“But the music itself, I conducted at Abbey Road with the Philharmonic of London, but it’s all this super produced.
“It’s really cool for me getting the nitty-gritty of recording, you know, synths and drums, live drums, but also 808s and breakbeats and drum and bass, and bass music, and hip hop, and music from around the world.
“There’s an Italian flavor to it since it takes place in Rome, all these different things. It’s one of the most complex scores I’ve ever done.”
He explained how he has created “so many themes for the different characters” and tones in the franchise, especially with the way the blockbuster movies have “evolved so much from where it started”.
He said: “From a movie about cars and racing to, you know, big global consequences, to heists. Like, the drama gets really big and the characters all fit together in an important way.
“Funny enough, to me [it is] closer to movies like ‘Star War’s and things like that because you have multiple villains, you have hierarchies, you have families, you have relationships and romances, and people come and go, and then people passed away on the franchise and real life.
“And the history is there. So, to have been writing all these themes all this time, not realising where it was gonna go, is just incredible.”
