‘Sometimes that was a little disappointing’: Bonnie Wright laments lack of Harry Potter screen time

OHMYGOSSIP — Bonnie Wright was disappointed with her lack of screen time in the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise.
The 32-year-old actress featured in all eight of the wizardry films as Ginny Weasley but lamented her alter ego’s lack of prominence in the movie adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s novels.
Speaking on Michael Rosenbaum’s ‘Inside of You’ podcast, Bonnie said: “I definitely feel there was anxiety toward performing and doing the best thing as my character built.
“Like, ‘Oh gosh, will I do justice to this character that people love?’ So that was always hard to do, especially when, inevitably, a lot of the scenes of every character were chopped down from the book to the film. So you didn’t really have as much to show in the film.
“Sometimes that was a little disappointing, because there were parts of the character that just didn’t get to come through because there weren’t the scenes to do that.
“That made me feel a bit anxious or just frustrated, I guess.”
Bonnie explained that she did not hold conversations with producers about Ginny’s lack of involvement as she was concerned about the number of bosses reading through the scripts.
She recalled: “There were a million executives going through them all. I think what I maybe took, which I don’t take so much to heart now, is I kind of felt that maybe anxiety was about, ‘Oh, I’m going to be seen as badly portraying this character’, rather than later realising that I wasn’t really given the opportunity to do that. So it wasn’t really my fault, exactly.”
Bonnie is grateful that ‘Harry Potter’ fans also wished to see more of Ginny in the films.
She said: “When fans do share that disappointment… they do it in a way that is like, ‘We know it wasn’t you. We just wanted more of you.’
“And that’s the same of every character. If only they could be five-hour-long movies.”

Gary Oldman cast in Paolo Sorrentino’s new Naples movie

OHMYGOSSIP — Gary Oldman has been cast in Paolo Sorrentino’s new film.
The 65-year-old actor has landed a role in the untitled Italian-language drama that is currently filming in Naples.
Details about Oldman’s part have not been revealed, but Sorrentino’s film is about a woman named Partenope “who bears the name of her city but is neither siren nor myth”.
In Greek mythology, Parthenope – as she is known in English – is the name of a siren who, after failing to lure Odysseus with her songs, cast herself into the sea and drowned. Her body washed up on a symbolic foundational rock where Naples lies.
Sorrentino said: “Her long life embodies the full repertoire of human existence: youth’s lightheartedness and its demise, classical beauty and its inexorable permutations, pointless and impossible loves, stale flirtations and dizzying passion, night-time kisses on Capri, flashes of joy and persistent suffering, real and invented fathers, endings and new beginnings.”
Previously announced cast members include the Italian stars Luisa Ranieri, Silvio Orlando, Stefania Sandrelli, Isabella Ferrari, Peppe Lanzetta, Alfonso Santagata, Lorenzo Gleijeses, Silvia Degrandi and newcomer Celeste Dalla Porta.
The movie is being shot between Naples and Capri with Sorrentino producing with Lorenzo Mieli, Anthony Vaccarello and Ardavan Safaee.
Meanwhile, Gary previously suggested that streaming services were a good thing for the film industry as they take “a lot of pressure” off directors to have instant success with their projects.
The Oscar-winning actor said: “With the streaming systems it takes a lot of pressure of the opening weekend because they don’t have to open in the same way.
“Films are now dropped rather than released and two, three or four minutes counts as a view. It’s a whole different thing.”

The reality TV duo – who finished fifth in the 2023 summer series of the show – have both taken to social media to announce their split.
Ella wrote on Instagram: “Just wanted to come on here and keep you all updated, as you deserve to know as I wouldn’t be where I am without you.
“Unfortunately myself and Mitch have decided to end our relationship. I really wanted things to work out and I’m gutted that our journey has come to an end.”
The blonde beauty is now looking forward to a “new chapter” in her life.
Ella also thanked her social media followers for their “love and support” over recent weeks.
She said: “I wish Mitch all the best and hope he finds happiness. It’s time for both of us to start a new chapter.

He wrote online: “As you have most likely seen Ella’s post sadly out relationship has come to an end.
“We had no intentions of ending, but with our busy life’s at this moment and living the other side of the country made it extremely hard for it to work.
“I wish Ella nothing but the best as she is a lovely girl and deserves the world. (sic)”

Millie Court and Liam Reardon’s romance is ‘better than ever’

OHMYGOSSIP — Millie Court and Liam Reardon’s relationship is “better than ever”.
The 26-year-old beauty and Liam first met on ‘Love Island’ back in 2021, and after they recently rekindled their romance, Millie insists they’re now in a better place as a couple.
She told MailOnline: “It didn’t end sourly, it wasn’t that kind of break-up. It was a decision that we needed a break.
“I think we both knew it wasn’t going to be something that ended forever. I think we knew it was something we wanted to revisit but it was time that we needed.
“We managed to make it work again and now it’s better than ever.”
Millie also believes that she and Liam are both more mature people now.
She said: “Liam was 21 when he went on the show and had his birthday in there and he’s 24 now and I’m coming up to 27! So we’re maybe a bit more mature as well.”
Millie and Liam have made a concerted effort to keep their romance more low-key this time around.
Liam insists they won’t allow other people to “interfere” with their relationship.
He explained: “People have private lives and can’t put everything on social media. And we were on the building blocks of our relationship together.
“We went our separate ways last year and that was partly because so many people felt like they were involved in our relationship and stuck their noses in.
“Some people obviously were being friendly but sometimes you just want a bit of privacy.
“We decided if we’re going to make this work, we have to make it work for us and not let other people interfere. Especially in the early stages.”

The Strictly Come Dancing curse is real, says HRVY

OHMYGOSSIP — HRVY thinks the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ curse is a “real thing”.
The 24-year-old music star appeared on the BBC show in 2020, and HRVY admits that the infamous couples’ curse is a real issue.
He told Metro.co.uk: “I know it’s real. I’m not going to say any more than that, but as someone who’s done the show – I’m not saying that I’ve experienced it firsthand myself – but I may have seen … It’s definitely a real thing.
“People talk about it and it’s like a bantering thing and I thought the same thing until I did it and then was like, ‘Wow, yeah.'”
HRVY – whose real name is Harvey Cantwell – has actually likened ‘Strictly’ to ‘Love Island’, the ITV dating show.
He explained: “It could be the intimacy of dancing. It could be the fact that you’re with a group of people for weeks and weeks and weeks.
“You could almost say it’s like ‘Love Island’ but you’re not on an island, you’re in a dance studio but it’s definitely real.”
HRVY’s real-life girlfriend, former ‘Emmerdale’ actress Mimi Slinger, actually stars in the music video for his new track, ‘Stolen Heart’.
HRVY insists it was a simple decision to cast her in the video.
He said: “Well, obviously I needed a lead girl and she’s an actress, so she really enjoys it and it was easy.
“It’s always a bit more difficult when you have to meet someone on the day that you’ve never met and you have to create this chemistry and you have to act. It was just nice to not have to do that.
“It was fun to be behind the camera and telling her to do stuff and directing her a little bit. It was just an easy day and I actually enjoyed it, which is good.”

Neighbours boss hints at big-name comebacks

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Neighbours’ bosses are open to hiring some big-name former cast members.
The Australian soap has returned to TV screens amid popular demand, and Jason Herbison, the show’s executive producer, has revealed that they had to move quickly to get some of the best-known stars on board.
He told RadioTimes.com: “I was thinking about [which cast members to bring back] in isolation for a little while, but then when we got the green light and sign-off, I went and visited the four heritage cast [Jackie Woodburne, Alan Fletcher, Ryan Moloney and Stefan Dennis].
“We talked to them and very quickly got them all on board for an announcement.
“I had a bit of an idea of the other characters that I’d been thinking about, so we very quickly and urgently got on the phones and, in a couple of weeks, pulled together the cast that we needed to return.”
Jason hinted that some other big-name former cast members could also return to the soap in the coming months.
He shared: “There were people who were unavailable as they had moved on to other projects, so we had decisions to make over whether or not we might want to recast those roles, or whether or not we might move them on from the show.
“But I will say that, just because a character is not back in episode one, it doesn’t mean they may not return in the future.
“Certainly, there’s a lot of love from the actors who have been on the show.”
In November 2022, Amazon announced that it was reviving the soap, less than four months after its final episode.
The landmark episode featured some of the big-name stars from the show’s past, including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Guy Pearce.

Julia Bradbury didn’t want to ‘petrify’ her children with cancer diagnosis

OHMYGOSSIP — Julia Bradbury tried to explain her breast cancer diagnosis to her kids “without petrifying” them.
The 53-year-old journalist and TV presenter – who announced her diagnosis in 2021 and shortly after underwent a mastectomy to remove a 6cm tumour – has reflected on how she tried to find the right way to tell her three children about her illness, and didn’t want to video call them while she was in hospital for the procedure.
She told The Times newspaper: “I didn’t want them to see me like that. I thought it would be worrying for them.
“What’s difficult with young children is explaining cancer to them without petrifying them. I was very aware that I had to be honest.”
The day after Julia – who has son Zephyr, 12, and eight-year-old twin daughters Xanthe and Zena with property developer husband Gerard Cunningham – left the hospital, she had her sister do her hair and makeup so she had their “game face” on for her children.
She has been determined to “stay alive” for her kids.
She added: When I had that first biopsy, I was like, ‘I want to see my children grow up. I want to live through GCSEs and A-levels and 21st birthdays and university’.
“I want to see them as adults. I just want to stay alive.”
And Julia admitted having one of her daughters recently ask if her cancer will return was particularly heartbreaking.
She said: “That was really hard. Cancer has shaped who I am, but it doesn’t define who I am. It profoundly changed my life and the way I think and behave.”
The broadcaster was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2021, one year after being told a lump on her breast was just a benign group of microcysts, and she has since insisted the diagnosis saved her life.
She wrote in the Daily Mirror newspaper: “Cancer saved my life. That may seem a strange thing to say, but it opened my eyes to what I was doing to myself. Before diagnosis, everything I did was at breakneck speed. I wanted it all, and pushed myself emotionally and physically to reach impossible goals.
“They say: ‘Time is free, but it’s priceless.’ Looking back, I didn’t value it at all.”

‘It doesn’t work…’ Michael Barrymore insists Strike It Lucky was ‘terrible’

OHMYGOSSIP — Michael Barrymore has insisted ‘Strike It Lucky’ was “a terrible game”.
The ex ‘Barrymore’ star thinks the classic game show – which ran for 13 seasons between 1986 and 1999 – “doesn’t work” and that the reason it was a success was because of his charisma and patter with the contestants.
The 71-year-old broadcaster told the Daily Star newspaper: “The format of ‘Strike It’ Lucky is s***. It’s c***. It’s a terrible game. It doesn’t work.
“’Strike It Lucky’ wasn’t about the game – that was just a vehicle for me to do all the nonsense.
“We sold the format to all these other countries based on my recordings. But they didn’t make it work because it wasn’t about the format.”
Despite his blunt assessment, Michael expressed his concern about how the industry was “never” going to produce such a hit again.
He said: “You’re never going to have shows like ‘Strike It Lucky’ again. They require investment, a bit of talent and being brave.
“If you’re going to tick boxes when making art like they do now, it’s never going to be great.”
The former ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ contestant – who was axed from ITV after Stuart Lubbock was found dead in his swimming pool at his Essex home in 2001 – Michael recently admitted that it has “taken” him more than two decades to “build up” his confidence since he left television. having never faced any changes.
He told the same newspaper last month: “The amount of confidence you need to work the way I did at my peak was phenomenal and that took years to build up. When everything went my confidence was completely smashed. It has taken me 22 years to get that back.”

Joel Dommett would love to host This Morning with Holly Willoughby

OHMYGOSSIP — Joel Dommett “definitely would” host ‘This Morning’ with Holly Willoughby.
The ‘Masked Singer’ host would be keen to present the “amazing” ITV1 daytime show with the 42-year-old television personality after filling in on the sofa after Phillip Schofield, 61, resigned.
He told the Mail Online: “I think I definitely would, I really loved doing it. It felt, from a comic’s point of view, just an amazing show.
“If you can do ‘This Morning’ for two-and-a-half hours, you’re in, you can do everything. She was so good, [ Holly] I just learnt so much from her, she was so professional.”
The 38-year-old comedian recalled one particular moment when he realised the amount of preparation Holly does for each show.
He added: “There was an amazing moment where I didn’t know what to make notes on, on my first day. I looked over at Holly and she’s made all these script notes. She just puts the effort in even after this long, I genuinely learned a lot.”
Joel – who is hosting the National Television Awards for the third time on September 5 – admitted he was “so happy for” Alison Hammond with her nod in presenter category.
He said: “It’s really great to see her on it again. What’s beautiful about the NTAs is that it’s voted by people at home. It is decided by the people who watch telly and that’s why Ant and Dec have had one for the last 22 years because they are unbelievably good at their job.
“It’s lovely to see that they are still at the top. It’s the dream for all of us to be having this conversation in 30 years time, that would be the absolute dream.
“I’m so happy for her, to see her on that list is absolutely fantastic.”
The ‘In A Shout’ presenter admitted that his “very pregnant” wife Hannah Cooper, 34, could go into labour during the ceremony but that there’s others lined up as a replacement.
Joel told The Sun newspaper: “[ITV bosses] told me there is a contingency. They won’t tell me who the contingency is but the best thing is everybody is there, every presenter going.
“What I would do is just give a section to everyone — you know, just get Stephen Mulhern to do one, Holly Willoughby to do the next bit, get Bradley Walsh on…”

Alison Hammond reveals Eamonn Holmes delivered speech at her mum’s funeral

OHMYGOSSIP — Alison Hammond has revealed Eamonn Holmes did a speech at her mum’s funeral.
The former ITV presenter attended the funeral of the ‘This Morning’ star’s late mum Maria following her death in January 2020 after a battle with liver and lung cancer.
Speaking to Gyles Brandreth on his new ‘Rosebud’ podcast – which is out on Friday (01.09.23) – she said: “We gave her the most beautiful funeral.
“Even Eamonn Holmes came to that, actually. He did a speech, because my mum was obsessed with Eamonn Holmes and I asked him if he’d come.
“He did a speech, came to the funeral, which was lovely.”
Earlier this year, the former ‘Big Brother’ star became emotional when she realised it was three years since her mother’s death while she was on air hosting ‘This Morning’ with Dermot O’Leary.
The two hosts were talking to callers about their superstitions during a segment with therapists Nik and Eva Speakman.
One viewer wanted advice on coping with the 13th because they associated the date with trauma, and Alison suddenly realised what the day was.
She said: “I’ve just realised it’s the 13th of January, today isn’t it? This is the date my mum passed away in bed 13.
“And we buried her on February 13th. It’s just literally come to me. And we did it on the 13th because I thought, ‘Why not?’
“So I don’t associate [the 13th] with anything bad. And it was a lovely funeral. It’s literally just come to me. Sorry.”
On the two-year anniversary of her mum’s death, Alison posted a tribute on Instagram alongside a photo of Maria in her younger days.
She wrote at the time: “Mummy Two years today you left me and the pain has never left my heart . I love and Miss you sooo much . I hear and feel you all the time . My Angel Maria.”

Kylie Minogue announces An Audience With special: ‘I can’t wait!’

OHMYGOSSIP — Kylie Minogue is to star in ‘An Audience with…’ for ITV1.
The 55-year-old pop superstar first had her own special of the series that sees celebrities host a revue-style show in front of a specially-invited audience in 2001 but is now set to record another edition of the programme on December 1 at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
She said: “I’m so excited to announce that I am teaming up with ITV for ‘An Audience with’ at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall! I’ll be performing some of my favourite tracks from throughout my career and no doubt answering some surprising questions from the audience. I can’t wait to share this moment with you all.”
The ‘Padam Padam’ hitmaker now joins Freddie Starr, Ken Dodd, Joan Rivers, Shirley Bassey, Al Murray and Donny Osmond as one of the few stars to be asked to host a special twice, whilst the late Dame Edna Everage is the only act to have been asked to front three different specials.
During her initial edition of the programme more than two decades ago, Kylie performed now-classics like ‘Spinning Around’ and ‘In Your Eyes’ and took questions from the likes of ‘Big Brother’ winner Brian Dowling and former ‘Neighbours’ co-star Anne Charleston, whilst also performing a memorable rendition of ‘Especially For You’ with Muppets favourite Kermit the Frog in place of Jason Donovan.
Towards the end of 2021, ‘An Audience with Adele’ helped ITV score its biggest Sunday night of the year and now bosses at the broadcaster are confident that Kylie – who will release her 16th studio album ‘Tension’ on 22 September – will make for another “unmissable evening” of viewing.
ITV’s head of entertainment commissioning Katie Rawcliffe said: “Kylie is unquestionably a music superstar, which makes her the perfect next headline star to front An Audience with. We look forward to another unmissable evening.”
Tickets for ‘An Audience with Kylie’ go on general sale at Friday 8 September at 10am.

Diane Franklin loves the ’emotion’ of horror movies

OHMYGOSSIP — Diane Franklin loves the “emotion” of horror movies.
The 61-year-old actress made her film debut with ‘Amityville II: The Possession’ in 1982 and is now starring as a mother trying to deal with her daughter’s sleepwalking problem in ‘Waking Nightmare’ and explained that the genre has such a “wide range” of characters and she would love do do a vampire movie at some point.
She told ScreenRant: “I love the emotion that is in drama. I love the tension in the stories. I love that it has a wide range of tones and characters. It can be anything from real life, to very graphic, to something like The Invisible Man, where something’s happening, but you’re not quite sure what’s going on. Ghosts, vampires—I’d love to do a vampire movie. That would be really fun.”
Diane added that she is “fascinated” by the mysterious element of horror films and “really enjoys” working in the genre because it is all based on imagination, but still thinks that audiences will be able to “identify” with the characters in her new movie.
She said: “Ghosts and vampires would be very cool. I’d love to do that. It’s the unknown. That’s why it’s fascinating. A lot of times, when someone commits a crime in the story, it’s about who did it. But in horror, it’s the unknown that could be the person who did it. It could be aliens, it could be zombies, and I love that aspect of it. There’s no preconceived idea—it’s everyone’s imagination. That’s why I really enjoy horror, itself.
“I liked the dynamic between a mother and a daughter who comes home from college and has to live with the parent and has a problem, and that fine line between a mother and a father being concerned and wanting to help her, but also the aspect of being very controlling. I think a lot of people will be able to identify with that situation today, because a lot of people are living home with their families as adults.”
‘Waking Nightmare’ is available to stream now.

Oppenheimer filming was cut do 57 days to free up funds for huge set costs

OHMYGOSSIP — Christopher Nolan cut the filming of ‘Oppenheimer’ to 57 days to free up funds to build Los Alamos.
Production designer Ruth De Jong has revealed they were running out of money while she was designing the town in New Mexico, which is one of the development and creation places of the atomic bomb.
However, the director came up with a way to increase the set design budget by cutting back on the time they had to shoot the flick from 85 days to 57.
Speaking on the ‘Team Deakins’ podcast, Ruth spilled: “It felt like a $100 million indie.
“This is not ‘Tenet’ [which was shot in 96 days]. Chris wanted to shoot all over the United States…just plane tickets alone and putting crew up all over the place [is expensive]. Not to mention I have to build Los Alamos, it doesn’t exist. That’s where I really felt like it was impossible.”
She continued: “Chris said, ‘Forget the money. Let’s just design what we want.’ So that’s what we did, and when construction first budgeted my town it was $20 million. Chris was like, ‘Yeah, no. Stop.’ We had this huge white model and I started pulling buildings out of it, not to mention we want to shoot in New York and New Jersey and Berkeley and Los Angeles and New Mexico.”
Executive producer Tom Hayslip said at one point they’d have to cut Berkeley from the locations list, which is where Oppenheimer was a professor of physics.
Ruth told him: “But we have to go to Berkley. That is Oppenheimer!”
And Christopher decided to cut the filming time to free up some funds.
Ruth recalled: “The producers were asking what I could do on my end to shrink [the budget]. Tom then comes into my office and says, ‘Chris is going to shoot this in 55 days.’ That is a lot of money we get back.
“At that point, you feel like I have to deliver above and beyond because he just went and gave up his days. He, more than anyone, knows what he wants to get in every single day and how he wants to get it and he goes from 85 to 55 days.”
Cillian Murphy, who plays one of the masterminds behind the world’s first atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, previously shared how fast-paced filming was.
He told the ‘WTF with Marc Maron’ podcast: “We made the movie unbelievably quickly. We made it in 57 days. The pace of that was insane.
“The sets are huge, but it feels like being on an independent movie. There’s just Chris and the cameraman — one camera always, unless there’s some huge, huge set piece — and the boom op and that’s it. There’s no video village, there’s no monitors, nothing. He’s a very analog filmmaker.”

Kai Widdrington ‘blows on his fingers’ to prevent his Strictly partners slipping out of his grip

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ professional Kai Widdrington “blows” on his fingers before taking to the dancefloor so his dance partner is less likely to slip out of his grip.
The 28-year-old choregrapher – who has been partnered with AJ Odudu and Kaye Adams since joining the programme in 2021 – has revealed he learned the method from former Olympic long jumper Greg Rutherford, who competed on the BBC One Latin and ballroom show in 2016.
Speaking to OK! magazine, Kai spilled: “In the boys’ dressing room, we play music and have a laugh. Do silly dances or TikToks. Sometimes I blow on my fingers – that’s what Greg Rutherford would do before he did the long jump. Sometimes you get sweaty hands and it helps to make sure my partner doesn’t slip!”
Kai also revealed that his dream celebrity dance partner would be ‘Harry Potter’ star Miriam Margolyes.
He said: “I think I would die from laughing. She’s absolutely hilarious.”
And Kai hopes he will be welcomed back to the show for years to come.
He added: “I want to stay on ‘Strictly’ for as long as these legs keep working.”
Meanwhile, Nadiya Bychkova recently shared how she and Kai are “focused” on their careers after falling for each other in 2021.
The loved-up pair are “living the dream” as they prioritise the show’s next series and other commitments over other relationship milestones.
Nadiya told the magazine in May: “Right now, we’re just focused on our tour and making it work with everything else going on. When you’re constantly on the go performing, that’s all you think about – making sure it’s all as good as it can be. It’s pretty amazing. It’s living the dream.”

Big Brother legend Chantelle Houghton shares hopes for new series: ‘Let’s go back to basic!’

OHMYGOSSIP — Chantelle Houghton is hoping that ITV finds the “right contestants” for ‘Big Brother’.
The 40-year-old model won the celebrity version of the Channel 4 reality show in 2006 and now that the original format is being revived by ITV, admitted that she wants to see “honesty and genuine relationships” form on-screen rather than just housemates who appear to be simply seeking fame or lucrative endorsement deals.
She told Ice 36: “I can’t wait for the new series of Big Brother and for the show to come back! Obviously, I was part of it, but before I went into the house, I used to watch every series – it was such a big part of the summer. I’m really excited to see what changes, if any, the producers are going to make to the show. I can’t wait to see the new presenters. I really hope that they find the right contestants to take part in the new series. The contestants are the reason we all love watching the programme, and there are so many reality TV shows out there these days where the audience knows that people are going on them just to become famous.
“I feel like some of these people are very calculated, and as a viewer it isn’t nice to watch these people and feel like they are manipulating the situation they’ve found themselves in for their own benefit. It just doesn’t feel authentic, which is what I think is the essence of reality TV. We want to see honesty and genuine relationships, so it’s really important to find the right people that aren’t looking to go on there and land a load of brand deals afterwards.
“Let’s go back to basics. Let’s get back to the heart of what made the show must-see TV with ordinary people in an extraordinary situation.
Chantelle – who competed alongside the likes of fellow glamour model Jodie Marsh and TV presenter Michael Barrymore – went on to add that her own era of reality television was more “pure” and wouldn’t change her experience on the show, but noted that if she went back, things would feel “very different” today.
She added: “If I had to choose to take part in ‘Big Brother’ now or when I was in the show in 2006, I would definitely pick my era. I think it would have been easier to deal with everything that came my way appearing on the show when I did. I also feel like the show was truly authentic back then, particularly when compared to reality shows at the moment. I feel like the people that go onto reality television are so clued up now.
“The era that I participated in the show was a little bit purer so to speak. I don’t think that if I went into the house as a 22-year-old now I would have the same experience as I did then. I loved my experience on the show – I wouldn’t want to swap it for anything. I think it would be very, very different (if I went into the house now).

Debbie McGee met Paul Daniels after being forced to flee Iran: ‘I ran for my life!’

OHMYGOSSIP — Debbie McGee got her job as Paul Daniels’ assistant after fleeing Iran.
The 64-year-old TV star was married to the legendary magician – who died in 2016 at the age of 77 just weeks after he was diagnosed with a brain tumour – but revealed that she only got the job as his assistant after fleeing Iran in 1979, where she had been working as part of the Iranian National Ballet following the onset of the Iranian Revolution as she opened up about her upcoming one-woman show.
Speaking on ITV’s ‘Good Morning Britain’. she said: “It’s my life being sawn in half. My life with Paul and my life now. In lockdown, I wrote it and I put this PowerPoint with photos and video clips together. To raise money for a local theatre, I tried it out. And I sold out. So the bits I didn’t think people would be too interested in, I skimmed over. I’m not great at talking about myself. You feel like you’re showing off. I have led a fairytale life, but I’ve also dealt with a lot of stuff as well. They all said ‘We didn’t know you were a hostage in Iran!’ That’s how “I met Paul because I came back to England and needed a job. It was about three months.
“I worked for a ballet company and we were all herded into a block of flats but the boys had to go out at six in the morning and the only food that we could get was from the bakers on the street, flatbread, like pizzas but no butter or anything. I escaped because I’ve always been a bit of a squirrel with money. I’d gone there because I had a business plan, I was being paid three times what I could earn in Europe. So I had this three-year plan that I was going to come back and buy property and if showbusiness didn’t work out then I’d be okay. So I had all these savings. I paid ten times what it would normally be .”
The former ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ contestant went on to compare her story to the Hollywood film ‘Argo’ as she was stopped by gunmen at the airport and ended up running for her life.
She added: “I escaped because I had all these savings, I paid ten times what it would normally be. I got a flight back to Switzerland but the airport was closing that day and if anyone has seen the film ‘Argo’, that is my story, even being stopped at the airport with gunmen and they wouldn’t let me through because someone had changed my Visa and I ran in the end.”
Debbie is going to hit the stage with an array of stories about what life was like as one half of the most successful TV double acts of all time.
