Mo Gilligan signs for League Of Their Own

OHMYGOSSIP — Mo Gilligan is joining ‘A League Of Their Own’.
The comedian has signed up to take part in the sports panel show as a member of the red team – led by Jamie Redknapp – facing off against the blue team consisting of former footballer Jill Scott and pundit Micah Richards.
Mo said of his new job: “I love this show. I always have. It’s good people and good vibes. When Sky asked if I’d consider joining the team, there was no question in my mind. It was an immediate yes. I’m here for it all!”
An insider added to The Sun newspaper: “Mo is one of the most in-demand stars on telly so it’s a real coup by Sky. He’s been on the show previously and gets some big laughs, so bosses expect more of the same for this year’s series.”
The new series of the show launches on Sky Max in October and guests set to join the teams include cricketer Stuart Broad, goalkeeper Mary Earps and comedians Katherine Ryan, Jimmy Carr and Rob Beckett.
The news will be a huge boost to Mo after his involvement in a reboot of beloved TV show ‘The Big Breakfast’ failed to pan out.
He presented a four episode run last year alongside AJ Odudu following a successful one-off reboot in 2021 as part of Channel 4’s Black to Front project, and there had been calls for the pair to return for another stint this summer.
However, the show failed to materialise. A spokesperson said: “Although there are no shows planned for this year The Big Breakfast may well return in the future.”
He suffered a further blow when the channel confirmed ‘The Big Narstie Show’ won’t be back for a sixth series. A statement from the network explained: “The decision not to recommission a sixth series of ‘The Big Narstie Show’ is not part of our response to challenges in the advertising market. “We are immensely proud of the five series we have made of this innovative Bafta-winning show but we have to look carefully at what we commission each year to make sure we continue to innovate and offer viewers a varied range of programming. ”

Woody Allen considering retirement after new film

OHMYGOSSIP — Woody Allen is considering retirement after his latest film.
The ‘Coup de Chance’ director has returned to Venice Film Festival with a romantic thriller – his 50th movie to date – and he explained there are two factors he’s thinking about when it comes to the idea of developing another project.
He told Variety: “I was thinking this is my 50th film and I have to decide if I want to make more films. There’s two things that I thought about. One is, it’s always such a pain in the neck to raise money for a movie. And do I want to go through it?
“Making the movie is one thing, but raising the money for it, you know, is tedious and not glamorous. And now if somebody steps out of the shadows and says, ‘I’ll give you money to make your movie,’ that would be an influential factor in making another movie.”
The 87-year-old filmmaker insisted the other factor is the state of the industry, with plenty of movies now having short spells on the big screen before appearing on TV or streaming platforms.
He added: “I don’t like the idea – and I don’t know of any director that does — of making a movie and after two weeks it’s on television or streaming.
“This is not a high cultural point. There were many wonderful films made in the past, and you don’t see many wonderful films made now. When I wanted to go to the movies, there used to be three or four films I was dying to see.
“Every week there would be a film from Truffaut and Fellini and Ingmar Bergman and Kurosawa. Now, very few European films are playing in the United States to begin with. I think we’re not in a wonderful place culturally, certainly not in cinema.”
Allen – who has insisted there is “no merit” to sexual abuse allegations made by his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow – addressed cancel culture but claimed his work has remained “the same” process.
He said: “I make my movies. What has changed is the presentation of the films. You know, I work and it’s the same routine for me. I write the script, raise the money, make the film, shoot it, edit it, it comes out.
“The difference is not is not from cancel culture. The difference is the way they present the films.”

Denzel Washington nearly turned down The Magnificent Seven for one reason

OHMYGOSSIP — Denzel Washington almost turned down ‘The Magnificent Seven’.
Director Antoine Fuqua – who has worked with the 68-year-old actor on ‘The Equalizer’ trilogy after first teaming up on 2001’s ‘Training Day’ – admitted selling his collaborator on the 2016 reboot wasn’t an easy task.
Speaking at Collider’s IMAX screening event for ‘The Equalizer 3′, he remembered opening his pitch with: “So, the sun is coming up. This man on this black horse comes…”
Fuqua recalled: “[Washington] goes, ‘Wait, what?’ I said, ‘A man on his horse,’ and Denzel’s like, ‘I’m not gonna get on a horse.’ [Laughs]
“I said, ‘No, no, let me finish! Magnificent Seven…’ And he just sat back and listened to me, let me get out my pitch.”
The filmmaker was convinced Washington would “walk away at any moment”, but thankfully he was willing to hear what Fuqua was planning.
He added: “Like halfway through my pitch, I’m thinking, ‘Denzel is gonna get up and walk away at any moment’.
“He’s gonna be like, ‘No, I’m not getting on the damn horse playing a cowboy,’ but he listened.
“He listened for a while. That took a while to get him to say yes to Magnificent Seven.”
The pair have worked together for the latest instalment in the ‘Equalizer’ franchise, but he insisted he isn’t planning a third film in the series.
He said: “It’s a nice send-off that he’s found a place. Because the first one is about finding purpose. He was trying to find a purpose, and he found it.
“The second one is about dealing with the past—his wife dying, Susan getting murdered, his friends betraying him—and he had to deal with his past.
“This one is about finding a place in life that you feel could be home and some peace. Where do you go from that? A prequel?”

Joel Dommett thinks even being nominated with Ant and Dec at NTAs is ‘amazing’

OHMYGOSSIP — Joel Dommett has claimed even being nominated alongside Ant and Dec is “amazing”.
The 38-year-old comedian is returning to host the National Television Awards tonight (05.09.23) for the third year in a row, and he has weighed in on the Geordie duo’s 21-year stranglehold on the category.
He told RadioTimes.com: “Ant and Dec are obviously there and they’re absolutely amazing – I feel like I’ve learnt everything from them, so long may their streak continue.
“That’s what’s wonderful about the Best Presenter category, because just being nominated feels like a really good nod.
“Because Ant and Dec have won it for so many years, just getting in on those top four or five is just an amazing thing to be thought about for.”
This year, Ant and Dec are hoping to make it 22 in a row with ‘The Martin Lewis Money Show’ presenter Martin Lewis also in the running alongside ‘The Chase’ star Bradley Walsh, ‘This Morning’ favourite Alison Hammond and ‘The Traitors’ host Claudia Winkleman.
Joel is “really, really excited for Claudia”, noting that the BBC reality show was “so good” and “so unexpected”.
He added: “I love how theatrical it felt and it felt really different for her and she felt so perfect for that role.
“I love that she’s nominated, it’s really cool.”
However, the ‘Masked Singer’ host insisted he couldn’t “have any favourites” in this year’s category.
He said: “It’s like my children, in the future. You can’t have any favourites, they’re all incredible.”
Meanwhile, Joel and his wife Hannah Cooper are expecting their first child together and the baby’s due date falls uncomfortably close to the NTAs.
It means show bosses have come up with a plan to make sure the glitzy event isn’t left without a presenter if Joel has to make a dash to hospital.
Joel recently told The Sun newspaper: “There is a contingency. They won’t tell me who the contingency is but the best thing is everybody is there – every presenter going.
“What I would do is just give a section to everyone – you know, just get Stephen Mulhern to do one, Holly Willoughby to do the next bit, get Bradley Walsh on…”

James Buckley explains why The Inbetweeners could never return

OHMYGOSSIP — James Buckley has insisted ‘The Inbetweeners’ could not return with the same spirit.
The 36-year-old actor – who played sex-obsessed loudmouth Jay Cartwright in the classic E4 sitcom, which ran for three series between 2008 and 2010, spawning two feature films – explained that the characters being “idiots” meant they could get away with the more risqué jokes and outrageous moments, but that wouldn’t be possible in a potential revival with the original cast later in life.
He told the MailOnline: “It was all justified because they were never the heroes. They were idiots and they got what they deserved.
“That’s why it can’t come back – you can’t have men in their late thirties acting like they’re in sixth form and getting away with that stuff.”
James – who appeared alongside Simon Bird, Joe Thomas and Blake Harrison on the show – still loves the show, and it’s his passion for it that means no payday could convince him to return.
He explained: “I always get asked if I’d ever do more and I said ‘For no amount of money’ and that quote got run away. I didn’t mean about money – it means more to me than money.”
The Cameo star – who became the video platform’s first millionaire through the custom clips he films – still recreates some of Jay’s infamous moments for fans, but there are a few he declines to do.
However, it’s down to simply not being able to remember the moment in question rather than wanting to leave it in the past.
He added: “On Cameo, I’m asked to do singing things, I’m asked to the ‘Crazy Frog’ thing, I don’t like doing that even when we filmed it…
“Another problem I have is I can’t remember it. Even with work I can’t remember things let alone something I did that long ago.”

Ferrari producer Andrea Iervolino slams Adam Driver casting criticism

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Ferrari’ producer Andrea Iervolino has hit back at criticism of the decision to cast Adam Driver in the lead role.
The 35-year-old producer claimed that Italian cinema has not produced enough high-profile stars to play the part of Enzo Ferrari – the founder of the legendary car company and rubbished suggestions of “cultural appropriation” by film star Pierfrancesco Favino.
Speaking at the Venice Film Festival, Iervolino – who is Italian-Canadian – said: “Italian cinema needs to look beyond Italy and come up with synergies with the international film industry, which wants to invest in Italian icons. Films like ‘Ferrari’, which will be distributed in 150 countries, promote Italy and Italian genius.”
The producer called on Italy’s film industry to “make films based on stories that speak to the whole world, with international stars who work side by side with our own talent”.
Favino had questioned why acclaimed actors such as Toni Servillo – who featured in ‘The Great Beauty’ – did not get more roles in Hollywood pictures.
The ‘Comandante’ star said: “There’s an issue of cultural appropriation.
“Instead, the parts are given to foreign actors who are distant from the story’s real protagonists, starting with the exotic accents. If a Cuban can’t play a Mexican, why can an American play an Italian? It only happens with us.
“In another time (Vittorio) Gassman would have played Ferrari. Now, Driver does it and no one says anything.”
Meanwhile, Adam revealed that he was not allowed to drive any of the famous cars during the making of Michael Mann’s movie – which chronicles Enzo Ferrari’s struggles to keep his company afloat amid turmoil in his personal life during the 1950s.
The 39-year-old actor said: “They were the scariest things on set, but they wouldn’t let me drive the cars for insurance reasons.”

‘It’s a triumph for original movies’: Christopher McQuarrie thrilled at Barbenheimer success

OHMYGOSSIP — Christopher McQuarrie is “delighted” about the success of ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’.
The ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ director has seen his Tom Cruise-led action blockbuster eclipsed at the box office by the two movies but feels that the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon has done wonders for the film industry.
Speaking on the Empire Spoiler Specials podcast, Christopher said: “I couldn’t be more delighted. We meant what we said when we went out and bought those tickets.
“I meant what I said when I went on Twitter – my last ever post on Twitter – and said, ‘Go pink or go home.’
“Could not be more thrilled for Margot (Robbie), who I think is an extraordinary talent, a mega-star. And I’m delighted for the validation that the movie gives to that part of Margot that is that mega-star. And I hope the lessons learned from that are applied. Couldn’t be more thrilled for Greta (Gerwig).”
The 54-year-old filmmaker continued: “Chris Nolan… you want to talk about between a rock and a hard place? You want to talk about a guy whose movie was a three-plus hour R-rated drama with nudity that leaves you feeling quote-unquote ‘devastated’.
“That’s a tough sell. That’s one helluva marketing strategy. And he won. He called it like Babe Ruth and he won. God bless him. Congratulations. That’s fantastic.”
McQuarrie is also pleased to see the “triumph for original movies” that comes with the success of both ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’.
He said: “It’s a triumph for original movies. It’s a triumph for films that are not sequels. And in the case of ‘Oppenheimer’, a drama. What movies used to be all the time. Tom and I just look at each other all the time like, ‘Man, it’s just about quality.'”

Harry Judd took up knitting when he “missed’ his family while on Celebrity Race Across the World

OHMYGOSSIP — Harry Judd took up knitting when he “missed” his wife and kids on ‘Celebrity Race Across the World’.
The McFly drummer was terribly homesick for his wife Izzy, 39, and their kids, daughter Lola, seven, and sons Kit, six, and Lockie, 22 months, when he took part in the star-studded edition of the BBC One travel competition and managed to cope when Emma – his partner on the show – suggested he take up needlework, calling it a “stitch and b****”.
The 37-year-old musician told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “I really missed my wife. And I went to Mum’s room and had a bit of a cry. She got this tapestry out that she does through the winter months. And she’d got me one. And I was thinking ‘OK’…
“Mum called it ‘stitch and b****’. It was really therapeutic so that is my one piece of advice [for anyone thinking of applying]. Get some tapestry – it’s the new rock’n’roll.”
Harry – who shot to fame in the ‘Five Colours In Her Hair’ band with Tom Fletcher, 38, Dougie Poynter, 35, and Danny Jones, 37, in the early 00s – reflected on his and his mother’s evolving relationship ever since he became a father.
He said: “I didn’t consider the impact that may have on Mum. It was just an exciting time for me. But now, having children myself, I can kind of relate to what Mum went through then.
“We would talk about everything. I learned so much about her life and childhood and that was probably the most special thing for me.”
Emma admitted she loved the “real opportunity” to jet across the planet with her ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ star son.
She added: “It’s a great big world out there, stop fussing over silly things. It’s been a real opportunity, and the best bit was being with Harry.”

Nicki Chapman undergoes £5,000 neck lift

OHMYGOSSIP — Former ‘Popstars’ judge Nicki Chapman has had a series of cosmetic treatments to give her a neck lift and get rid of her double chin.
The 56-year-old TV and radio presenter – who was part of the TV talent show back in the early 2000s – turned to one of the UK’s leading aesthetic practitioners, Dr Judy Todd, for a series of high-tech facial treatments in a bid to get rid of her double chin after being “really conscious” of her appearance.
She said: “We’re all critical of something in our bodies, and for me it was the loose jowls and skin under my jawline.
“I was really conscious of it and I would never let people photograph my neck in profile.”
To combat her concerns, the ‘Escape to the Country’ star underwent nitrogen plasma rejuvenation treatment NeoGen, combined with Morpheus8 micro-needling with radio frequency.
Nicki admitted she struggled to look at photos of herself before the procedure, and while she isn’t expecting to “look like I’m 25”, she still wanted a more youthful appearance.
She added: “Looking at the picture of myself at the beginning of this process, I can’t believe how jowly I am.
“You can really see the lines on my neck as well, but now looking at the pictures of me now without makeup on and no-filters whatsoever and I can really see the difference.”
She has undergone five treatments – roughly one every two months – since visiting Dr Judy at the end of last year.
The first four were Morpheus8 micro-needing treatments – each worth £875 – which inject radiofrequency energy into the skin with a series of tiny needles.
She also had a £1,500 medium strength NeoGen treatment to improve skin quality and reduce laxity and loose skin by using ultra-high radio frequency to convert pure nitrogen gas into nitrogen plasma.
She explained: “The way that I work for TV and radio, I need to be available all the time, so I can’t have a treatment that’s going to take me out for two of three weeks.
“With these treatments the recovery time was minimal, I would say 24 hours max, and even then it was only a little bit of redness, I could still go out.”
Although the results “didn’t happen overnight”, she noticed “a huge difference” after six months.
Dr Judy Todd runs clinics in London and Glasgow. For information on his treatments visit synergygiffnock.co.uk or telephone 0141 237 4110.

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Married At First Sight UK’ has cast its first ever transgender contestant.
The E4 dating show has unveiled the lineup for this year’s series, and producers have made history with the inclusion of 29-year-old clinic consultant Ella.
She said: “This experiment is so much more than just me getting married. I see this as a big deal for someone who has transitioned.”
Ella will join other brides all looking to be matched with their perfect partner in the search for love.
She has been described as a “blonde bombshell with a sense of humour and heart of gold”.
She lives with her nan – the closest person to her – and insisted they are “the dynamic duo everyone needs in their life”.
The upcoming season’s 36 episode run will the the largest to date, as well as the longest-ever stretch on Channel 4.
Coaches Melanie Schilling, Paul C. Brunson and Charlene Douglas are back to guide the cast through their weekly dinner parties.
Reality TV fans will recognise Nathaniel from ‘Geordie Shore: Hot Single Summer’ in 2021, and the events marketing manager will be one of the grooms for the series.
He teased: “I don’t trust anyone but myself, but I hope they’ve done a good job that’s all I can say.”
Also joining the cast alongside Ella and Nathaniel are Polish tennis coach Arthur, model Brad, sports rehabilitator Georges, sales executive Luke and events marketing manager Nathaniel.
The men’s lineup is rounded off by footballer, boxer and gym-lover Paul, youth worker, DJ and father-of-three Terence and investment communications workers Thomas.

Anton Du Beke and Giovanni Pernice carry on in Anton and Giovanni’s Adventures in Spain

OHMYGOSSIP — Anton Du Beke and Giovanni Pernice are reuniting for ‘Anton and Giovanni’s Adventures in Spain’.
The two ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ stars are making a follow-up to their BBC One smash hit travel show ‘Anton and Giovanni’s Adventures in Sicily’ – which saw them drive all around the picturesque Italian isle and homeland of Giovanni – and they are heading to another beautiful European country.
Anton – who now sits on the judging panel with Craig Revel-Horwood, Shirley Ballas and Motsi Mabuse after being a pro on the show – said: “My loves, it is such a treat for me to be able to take my dear friend Giovanni to a country that I hold so close to my heart.
“What a joy it is to be able to share this marvellously jovial jaunt with both Gio and all the wonderful viewers watching at home. Magnifico!”
Giovanni – who has been a professional on the star-studded Latin and ballroom competition since 2015 – admitted he was “excited” for their new televised jaunt but wanted to avoid any more contact with the authorities.
He added: “I am so excited to be heading out for more adventures with my best friend Anton on this epic road trip across Spain, I just hope we manage to avoid being stopped by the police this time!”
Bosses at the public broadcaster were “thrilled” to have the pair back on screens travelling as well as dancing.
Mel Balac, the Creative Director at BBC Studios, said: “We’re thrilled to be following the boys on another epic and intimate adventure. Hold tight for plenty of laughs, a few tears and some new look song and dance numbers in the Spanish sunshine.”
The head of entertainment commissioning, Kalpna Patel-Knight, also commented: “Our dancing duo are hitting the road once again and with Anton having a genuine love of the country that he wants to showcase to Giovanni, Spain is the perfect place for the boys to explore on their next adventure.”

James Blunt found it ‘painful’ judging on The X Factor

OHMYGOSSIP — James Blunt “didn’t enjoy” judging ‘The X Factor’.
The ‘You’re Beautiful’ hitmaker found his stint sitting on the panel alongside Guy Sebastian, 41, Dannii Minogue, 51, Chris Isaak, 67, the year Cyrus Villanueva was victorious on the Aussie version of the talent show “quite painful” as it felt like ruining people’s dreams for “ratings”.
The 49-year-old singer told the online edition of the Radio Times: “I didn’t enjoy it, and I struggle with ‘The X Factor’, because it’s more TV show than music competition.
“The winners are always the judges’ choices rather than the ones who do best each week.
“Seeing these hopefuls with their 15 minutes, and their dreams shattered for ratings, I find quite painful.”
James had some tense on-air exchanges with his fellow judges and spent just one series on the show in 2015, but he did thank his co-stars during the finale.
He said at the time: ‘‘Thank you Australia for having me. Thank you to you in the audience, thank you to you on the panel.
“It’s really hard, it’s easy to come in and think you’ll know the right thing to do.
“But I learnt a lot from Guy and Dannii and their help and guidance across the series. I think both Chris and I learnt a lot from seeing them in action.”
Meanwhile, the Brit Award winner recently shared the wisdom his father, Colonel Charles Blount, passed onto him as he advised “life is not a dress rehearsal”.
James previously told The Guardian newspaper: “Life is not a dress rehearsal. My father gave me that advice. Go out there, do everything. It’s why I got into music. I had the dream and didn’t want to grow old with regret.”

NTAs: Danielle Harold scoops Serial Drama Performance accolade

OHMYGOSSIP — Danielle Harold cried as she picked up the Serial Drama Performance Award at the National Television Awards (NTAs) on Tuesday (05.09.23).
The former ‘EastEnders’ star appeared genuinely stunned as she made her way onto the stage at The O2 in London after her portrayal of brain tumour victim Lola Pearce-Brown’s final days saw her scoop the accolade ahead of ‘Emmerdale’s Dominic Brunt (Paddy Kirk) and ‘Coronation Street’ stars Charlotte Jordan and Maureen Lipman, who play Daisy Midgeley and Evelyn Plummer respectively.
Accepting the award from Michelle Collins – who excitedly shouted “Yes” when she read out Danielle’s name, the actress said: “I literally… I really didn’t prepare anything, I thought this is the biggest, biggest, biggest shock and I can’t believe I’m standing in front of the O2.
“I just want to say literally every single person who had an input into this storyline and the research, guys this is for you.
“Please give money to Brain Tumour Research UK, they need it so, so much, they really do.
“I just want to take a minute to thank all the cast and Chris, and everyone who supported me, Julia Crampsie who brought me into the show, guys I love you so much without your support I couldn’t do this, thank you so much.”
Earlier in the evening, the TV Interview honour went to ‘The Graham Norton Show’ but unlike category rivals Louis Theroux, Piers Morgan and Chris and Rosie Ramsay, the host wasn’t at the ceremony to be able to accept the accolade in person
‘The Traitors’ won the Reality Competition prize, while the third season of ‘Happy Valley’ landed the Returning Drama honour.
The evening’s first award, the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award, was presented to ‘Gogglebox’.

Ant and Dec score record-breaking 22nd consecutive NTA win

OHMYGOSSIP — Ant and Dec have won the TV Presenter accolade at the National Television Awards (NTAs) for the 22nd time in a row.
The ‘Saturday Night Takeaway’ co-hosts – who were up for the prize alongside Alison Hammond, Martin Lewis, Claudia Winkleman and Bradley Walsh – admitted they were “more nervous than ever” before going into the event on Tuesday (05.09.23) evening, but were just as “humbled and grateful” to receive the honour as they had ever been.
Speaking on stage at The O2 in London, Ant McPartlin said: “Thank you so much to the NTAs we’ve got quite a long list of thank yous, all of the shows and the people we work with, we are the luckiest two men on telly because we’ve got the best production teams and the best people to work with, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
His presenting partner Declan Donnelly added: “Thank you to ITV, to Kevin and Katie and all the team at ITV for your continued support. Thank you to our fantastic management team for your support, thank you gang, you’re up in the box somewhere.
“Thank you to our lovely wives, our beautiful children. I can’t believe that we are still getting away with this…”
Ant interrupted: “Were you more nervous than ever?”
Dec agreed: “Ever before, hands are sticky, my heart is beating, but we are as humbled and grateful tonight as we were the first time we won, so thank you for taking the time to vote for us, we really appreciate it.”
The ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’ presenters promised to keep working together for as long as possible.
Dec said: “We’ll see you back on telly very soon.”
Ant added: “We’ll keep doing it for as long as you want us to keep doing it.”

NTAs winners: Big night for Sarah Lancashire, EastEnders and Ant + Dec

OHMYGOSSIP — Sarah Lancashire was honoured with the Special Recognition Award at the National Television Awards (NTAs) on Tuesday (05.09.23).
The 58-year-old actress wiped away tears as she took to the stage at London’s O2 to accept the accolade following an introduction from Sir Ian McKellen and a compilation video featuring highlights of her career and tributes from past co-stars including William Roache, Dawn French, Nicola Walker, James Norton, and Siobhan Finneran.
To chants of ‘Sarah! Sarah!’, she emotionally said: “You have no idea what it’s like to have so many lovely things said about you by so many people you love and admire…
“I have been so very fortunate to spend my working life doing a job that I love, made possible by brilliantly talented people – producers, directors, writers, actors – and I am exceptionally lucky to have enjoyed every moment of it.
“But there are also enablers wo stand very quietly in the wings without expectation or due credit, they are my family, my husband, my children, my friends, my agent Nick, thank you.
“And of course a very vital component in this is you, the audience.
“Without you, all this would grind to a crashing halt. So carry on doing what you’re doing, keep watching, and we’ll keep doing what we do.
“Thank you so much for this, it’s very special.”
The prestigious honour wasn’t Sarah’s only trip to the stage either, as she also secured the Drama Performance award for her portrayal of Catherine Cawood in ‘Happy Valley’, and the show itself took the Returning Drama award.
Meanwhile, ‘EastEnders’ beat rivals ‘Coronation Street’, ‘Emmerdale’ and ‘Hollyoaks’ to the tightly-fought Serial Drama prize, marking the soap’s third win of the night.
Speaking on behalf of the cast, Gillian Taylforth said: “Thank you to everybody who has voted for us, this means so much to us, it’s amazing.
“‘EastEnders’ really is a team effort, we are a family. We stand up here taking the credit and the glory but there’s so many people backstage and behind the scenes. WE’d love to thank everyone personally but if we did we’d be here all night. Don’t worry, we’ll come and celebrate with you lot when we get back to Walford.
“We’d also like to celebrate with the other nominees in this category who have had a wonderful and brilliant year.
“There’s also one man we must say special thanks to and that is [executive producer] Chris Clenshaw.”
Earlier in the evening, Danielle Harold fought back tears and admitted she wasn’t prepared when she won the Serial Drama Performance award for her portrayal of brain tumour victim Lola Pearce-Brown’s final days.
And that’s not all because Bobby Brazier scooped the Rising Star honour in recognition of his role as Freddie Slater and dedicated his win to his dad, TV presenter Jeff Brazier, who looked on in tears.
Bobby said: “Oh wow. I’ve been thinking what I might say over the last couple of days and it’s become obvious.
“This has very little to do with me and everything to do with my dad. Over the course of the last 20 years, I’ve consistently heard him say, ‘Because I can’, a mantra or a motto and him just saying that ‘Because I can’, why not.”
Elsewhere at the ceremony – which was hosted by Joel Dommett – Ant and Dec took home the TV Presenter prize for the 22nd year in a row, while ‘The Traitors’ won Reality Competition, ‘Gogglebox’ scooped the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award, and ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ won the Talent Show prize ahead of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, ‘The Great British Bake Off’, and ‘The Great British Sewing Bee’.
The late Paul O’Grady – who died in March aged 68 – was awarded the Factual prize for ‘The Love of Dogs’, shortly after a touching compilation video, including his many previous NTA wins, had broadcast.
Leading those who worked on the show, head vet Shaun Opperman – to repeated interruptions from the barking of dog Wiley, who had been brought on stage – accepted the award and said: “We’d like to thank Paul of course and the ITV team. for shining a light on the care we are able to provide for the 100 or more dogs and cats that come to Battersea each week.
I know that Paul cared deeply about each and every one of those animals. I think there’s something about their plight and vulnerability that really struck a chord with Paul. For over 10 years he was a tireless ambassador, not just for us but rescue animals everywhere.”
As Wiley howled, he added: “For me though, he was just tremendous fun to work with and a lovely, lovely man and we will really miss him.
“Thank you Paul and thank you so much.”

The LEGO Group UK’s ‘Unstoppable FC’ programme will host a series of Play Workshops with Super League sides Arsenal Women, Aston Villa WFC and Chelsea FC Women next week, with the sessions specially designed to teach females aged 8-11 ‘Buildbackability’, or the art of bouncing back from a setback.
The sessions will incorporate fun football drills and LEGO build challenges, and the players will be at the workshops at their respective clubs.
Parents and carers can visit www.lego.com/en-gb/play-unstoppable/unstoppable-fc to find out more and get their girls involved, with spaces allocated on a first come, first served basis.
In addition, the Unstoppable FC website will also feature Beth and Lauren Hemp sharing their stories of resilience to help inspire young girls, as well as tips from sports psychologist Dr. Josephine Perry.
Josephine said: “Educating girls to treat failure as a learning experience and bounce back from setbacks is crucial to helping them tackle life challenges. I’m thrilled to be partnering with the LEGO Group to teach young girls the art of Buildbackability, or in other words how to build yourself up after being knocked back.”
The campaign was launched after a survey found parents of girls listed resilience and determination amongst the top qualities demonstrated by the most inspirational women of today. 63% of those surveyed admitted they wished they had been taught to be more resilient growing up and the same percentage believed their own daughters need to be resilient to succeed in the modern world.
