Paul Hollywood and Melissa Spalding ‘are set to tie the knot’

OHMYGOSSIP — Paul Hollywood is reportedly set to marry Melissa Spalding at the same resort in Cyprus where he married his ex-wife.
The 57-year-old TV star has been dating the pub landlady for the last three years, and he’s now preparing to tie the knot after he was recently spotted at the Anassa Hotel in Cyprus.
A source told The Sun newspaper: “People privately think it’s odd he’s marrying here because he has so many memories of his first wife connected to the hotel.
“He gets treated like royalty by the owners, but what must Melissa think? She’s following in the same footsteps where he had another woman on his arm.”
Paul – who is best known for appearing on ‘The Great British Bake Off’ – actually lived in Cyprus during the 1990s and he even worked at the hotel as the head baker.
The TV star was living in the country when he met his ex-wife Alexandra. The couple tied the knot in 1998 but split in 2017.
Meanwhile, Paul reportedly proposed to Melissa over Easter.
However, the TV presenter made a concerted effort to keep the news quiet for some time.
A source previously told The Sun newspaper: “Paul proposed some months ago, but they have been keeping it very quiet since then. It’s only in the past month that she has begun wearing her engagement ring out in public, and sharing their news with friends.”
Despite this, the couple didn’t have any plans to tie the knot at the time.
The source insisted: “There are no wedding plans in place yet.”

Christine McGuinness struggled to make friends as a child

OHMYGOSSIP — Christine McGuinness struggled to make friends during her childhood.
The 35-year-old TV star – who was diagnosed with autism in 2021 – has revealed in a launch video for ‘BBC Children In Need’ that she really “struggled to make friends” during her younger years.
Christine – who was married to Paddy McGuinness between 2011 and 2022 – shared: “My childhood was really fun. I remember playing outside with my brother and sister, and just being at home with my mum.
“When I was younger, I really struggled at school, I struggled to make friends, to socialise, and to fit in, it was at home I always felt the most comfortable … (My) mum was always the most positive mum.
“And she always made me feel like I can just be, made it comfortable … and she just loves me and she made me smile every single day … thank you (mum) so much for being the most amazing (and) strongest person (and an) independent woman.”
Earlier this year, meanwhile, Christine insisted that she doesn’t want autism to “hold [her] back”.
The TV star revealed that she won’t allow the condition – which can lead to sensory issues and discomfort in social settings – to stop her from living her life.
She told OK! Magazine: “I understand myself a lot more and feel more comfortable.
“I’m not completely comfortable in my own skin yet, but I’m getting there.
“If I go to a restaurant, I’m not afraid to ask for my food to be a little bit plainer, while before I used to feel awkward and difficult about it. Now I’ll just say [what I want] because I want to be able to socialise and eat with everybody – I don’t want autism to hold me back.”

‘This Morning’ dentist Dr Uchenna Okoye dead aged 53 after ‘sudden illness’: ‘Her sparkle touched everyone she met’

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘This Morning’ dentist Dr Uchenna Okoye has died aged 53.
The popular medical expert – also famed for appearing on Channel 5’s makeover show ‘10 Years Younger in 10 Days’ – passed away following a “sudden illness” on Friday (15.09.23), her family said.
They added in a statement posted on Instagram: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of the much loved and respected Cosmetic Dentist, Dr Uchenna Okoye, who passed away after falling ill at home on Friday 15th September 2023.
“At this time, we ask for your prayers for her young daughter, her family, her team of staff at London Smiling Dental Group and her friends who are all struggling to come to terms with her loss.
“We request that you respect Uchenna’s family’s wishes for privacy at this very difficult time.
“The Uchenna sparkle touched the lives of everyone she met and drew her into stardom on 10 Years Younger makeover show, followed by ‘10 Years Younger in 10 Days’ where her passion and compassion leaps off the screen.
“For the last twenty years, her deep knowledge of dentistry and her incredible chair-side manner made her the go-to spokeswoman for any dental issue and a popular contributor to radio, TV, and women’s consumer press.”
Dr Uchenna qualified at Guy’s Hospital in London and went on to specialise in cosmetic dentistry.
She was one of the few leading dentists in her field to be a member of both the American and British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
Dr Uchenna was also an honorary clinician at St George’s Hospital, London, and sat on the board of the British Association of Cosmetic Dentistry.
She is survived by her daughter.
Days before news of her death was announced, ‘This Morning’ hosts Holly Willoughby, 42, and Dermot O’Leary, 50, led the tributes to guest Matty Lock after he suddenly died aged 19.
The pair said the teenager – who made regularly appearances on the ITV show to review vacuum cleaners after he became obsessed with them since getting his first toy Henry Hoover aged two – said he was a “truly unique” and “lovely” part of the studio.

‘I’m in quiet revolt!’ Tim Burton blasts The Flash’s Nicolas Cage and Michael Keaton appearances

OHMYGOSSIP — Tim Burton didn’t enjoy seeing Nicolas Cage as Superman in ‘The Flash’.
The iconic filmmaker was just weeks away from working on ‘Superman Lives’ in 1998 when the plug got pulled after two years of pre-production work, while the actor did play the role – albeit with a lot of CGI – in a multiverse sequence in the 2023 movie, which also saw Michael Keaton reprise his role as Batman.
Asked if he has regrets over missing out on the ‘Superman’ movie, he told the British Film Institute: “No, I don’t have regrets.
“I will say this: when you work that long on a project and it doesn’t happen, it affects you for the rest of your life.
“Because you get passionate about things, and each thing is an unknown journey, and it wasn’t there yet.
“But it’s one of those experiences that never leaves you, a little bit.”
And he drew a negative comparison between seeing Cage and Keaton in ‘The Flash’ with the controversial use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking.
He insisted: “But also it goes into another AI thing, and this is why I think I’m over it with the studio.
“They can take what you did, Batman or whatever, and culturally misappropriate it, or whatever you want to call it.
“Even though you’re a slave of Disney or Warner Brothers, they can do whatever they want.
“So in my latter years of life, I’m in quiet revolt against all this.”
Burton had very kind words for Keaton, describing their working relationship was “beautiful” with work paused on the ‘Beetlejuice’ sequel amid the ongoing Hollywood strikes.
However, he did weigh in on their reasons for not reuniting for a third ‘Batman’ movie together, which the director blamed on “the studio”, comparing it to Disney not working with him on a follow-up to ‘Vincent’ and ‘Frankenweenie’ in 1982 and 1984 respectively.
He added: “Well, the studio [Warner Bros], it was like the earlier Disney situation. They had enough of me for that one. I think I upset McDonald’s or something.”

‘It destroys him’ Keanu Reeves wanted John Wick ‘killed off’ after filming 4th movie, says producer

OHMYGOSSIP — Keanu Reeves was desperate for his titular character in ‘John Wick 4’ to be “definitively killed” at the end of the movie, according to one of the producers.
Basil Iwanyk has told how the 59-year-old Hollywood star was left so “physically and emotionally destroyed” after shooting the motion picture that he wanted his character – a former hitman who is forced back into the criminal underworld – to be axed.
Speaking to Collider, Iwanyk said: “After the second, third, and fourth movie, making these films is so exhausting and it destroys Keanu, physically and emotionally.
“By the end, he’s always like, ‘I can’t do this again,’ and we agree with him.”
Iwanyk admitted Reeves is like a “shell of himself” at the end of filming because he gives so much to the part.
He added: “The guy is just a shell of himself because he just goes off and goes for it.
“He was like, ‘I wanna be definitively killed at the end of this movie.’
“We were like, ‘You know, we’ll leave a 10 per cent little opening.’ ”
In May, it was revealed ‘John Wick 5’ is in the early stages of development.
Lionsgate chairman Joe Drake revealed at the time that a fifth movie was already in the works, along with a host of other projects at the production studio.
During a recent financial call, he said: “We’re now moving across that franchise, not just in the AAA video game space, but looking at what the regular cadence of spin-offs, television really growing that universe so that there is a steady cadence of a franchise that there’s clear appetite by the audience. at is official is that, as you know, ‘Ballerina’ [starring Ana de Armas] is the first spinoff that comes out next year. We’re in development on three others, including ‘John Wick 5’ and including television series, ‘The Continental’, will be airing soon.
“And so, we’re building out the world and when that five movie comes, will be organic – will be organically grown out of how we’re starting to tell those stories. But you can rely on a regular cadence of John Wick.”

Great British Bake Off team learned sign language to help show’s first ever deaf contestant

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘The Great British Bake Off’ judges Paul Hollywood and Dame Prue Leith learned sign language to communicate with the show’s first ever deaf contestant.
The beloved Channel 4 baking competition is returning for a new series on September 26 and 27-year-old participation officer Tasha had a signer with her in the tent, which prompted the team to make sure they learned so they could make things easier for her during filming.
Prue told Radio Times Magazine: “She had a signer, so we all learnt a bit of sign language.
“Paul was terrific and he learnt a lot. I just about managed to learn how to say ‘good luck’ and ‘well done.’ ”
Tasha has revealed she actually applied for the show at the last minute after her manager convinced her to give it a go.
She told Channel 4: “My manager urged me to apply and was the one who basically made sure I got the application in (by badgering me on WhatsApp after every application advert at the end of the season 13 episodes)!
“When I had the Zoom call to tell me I was one of the 12, I cried! Daryl (my BSL interpreter) also cried! We were a mess.”
Tasha insisted she “didn’t say anything that made sense” because she wasn’t preparing at all for the news.
She added: “I never thought that it would be me going to the tent!
“I also went on holiday with seven friends the day after finding out and could only tell one of them, so I was absolutely bursting with the secret all week!”
In an emotional moment, Noel Fielding introduced her BSL interpreter Daryl as part of the lineup alongside new co-host Alison Hammond.
She recalled: “Seeing Daryl up at the front and feeling fully part of the show was a really special moment.
“I couldn’t have done it without him and without the dedication from the show ensuring I had the same access as the other bakers.”

Rita Ora to be replaced on The Masked Singer by guest judges

OHMYGOSSIP — Rita Ora is going to be replaced on the panel of the next series of ‘The Masked Singer’ by several guest judges.
The ‘Hot Right Now’ hitmaker has had to pull out of a number of filming slots due to other work commitments, including filling in for Nicole Scherzinger on Season 11 of the US version of the celebrity talent show alongside Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, 50, Ken Jeong, 54 and Robin Thicke, 46.
Nicole, 45, can’t complete her judging duties due to her landing the role as Norma Desmond in the London West End musical ‘Sunset Boulevard’.
UK judges Davina McCall, 55, Mo Gilligan, 35, and Jonathan Ross, 62, will be guessing “whose behind the mask” with a different panellist each week.
A source told The Sun newspaper’s TV Biz column: “Rita is a massive part of ‘The Masked Singer’ family alongside Jonathan Ross, Mo Gilligan and Davina McCall, and she will be missed.
“The show is a huge part of Rita’s life but her hectic schedule means she is going to miss a couple of shows in the upcoming series.
“Filming on the new instalment begins in the coming weeks, and Rita is going to be there when she can.
“The show’s bosses are lining up some stellar celebrity guests to hold the fort while Rita is off, and they can’t wait to surprise fans with who they have booked.”
The 32-year-old pop star – who is married to director Taika Waititi, 48, in an intimate ceremony – admitted she was “gutted” not to be able to be there for the full run of the show.
She said: “I’m gutted to be missing some episodes on the new season, but keeping my seat warm are some great guest panellists who I’m told are also super competitive and will keep the others on their toes, especially Jonathan! Bring it on.”

Phillip Schofield This Morning scandal set to be made into a TV drama

OHMYGOSSIP — Phillip Schofield’s relationship with a runner on ‘This Morning’ is set to be made into a TV drama.
The 61-year-old presenter left the ITV daytime show in May 2023 after sitting on the sofa for over 20 years after it was revealed he’d had an extra-marital affair with a younger male assistant on the programme.
Now, it has been revealed by The Sun newspaper that a production company has started work on a series – which is tentatively titled ‘The Runner’ – which will chronicle Schofield’s affair which led to his exit from ‘This Morning’ and it is set to include scenes which show how he kept the relationship from his co-host and friend Holly Willoughby, 42, show bosses and YMU, the management company that represented him.
Speaking to the publication, a source said: “A production company’s started work and they think the series would be a perfect fit for Channel 4.
“The storyline will reflect what went on. People have seen it from the outside but the drama will give a perspective on what may have occurred behind-closed-doors.
“It could make for uncomfortable viewing for Phil and ITV.”
Following the scandal, ITV launched an external investigation into exactly what happened and the findings are due to be reported later in September.
In the wake of his departure, Schofield admitted he had “massive guilt” over his fling, and was adamant that nothing inappropriate had occurred despite the age gap.
In an interview with The Sun, he said: “There are accusations of all sorts of things. It never came across that way (an abuse of power) because we’d become mates. I don’t know about that.
“But of course I understand that there will be a massive judgment, but bearing in mind, I have never exercised that anywhere else.
“I assume somebody, somewhere, assumed something was going on, correctly, and didn’t say anything.
“At the time I did not think about it possibly ruining my career. I really probably only thought about it when I saw the rumour mill, and saw it growing.
“Then I saw the link with the drama school photo all those years before, and thought, ‘This looks shocking.’
“But I didn’t lie to protect my career, he didn’t want his name in public. He wanted his own life.
“The lies grew bigger and bigger and bigger and it was affecting both of us deeply.
“It got to the stage where it was out of control and for whatever cost, it had to stop.
“I have massive guilt, and regret. I’ve made a mistake, I’ve had an affair at work.”

Mathew Horne has ‘absolutely no idea’ if there will be new Gavin and Stacey episodes

OHMYGOSSIP — Mathew Horne has “absolutely no idea” if there is going to be anymore ‘Gavin and Stacey’ episodes.
The 45-year-old actor plays the titular Gavin Shipman in the beloved BBC sitcom which chronicles the Essex boy’s relationship with Barry Island beauty Stacey West – played by Joanna Page – and the joining of their two eccentric families.
The comedy – which is written by James Corden and Ruth Jones, who also play Smithy and Nessa Jenkins – was last seen on screens as a 2019 Christmas special in 2019 and the episode, which was watched by 11.6 million viewers, ended on a cliff-hanger as Nessa proposed to Smithy.
Horne admits he is constantly asked by fans if there will be ‘Gavin and Stacey’ but he genuinely has no idea if Corden and Jones have plans to write more instalments.
In an interview with the Metro newspaper’s ‘60 Seconds With…’ feature, he said: “I’m not sick of being asked. I just don’t have the answers. That’s the problem, because the questions inevitably centre around, ‘Is there going to be any more?’ And I absolutely have no idea.”
Recently, Alison Steadman – who played Gavin’s mother Pam – claimed that a full series would be “too draining” but she would be up for another special to continue the story.
Speaking to the Radio Times, the 77-year-old actress : “The Christmas special cliffhanger ending was brilliant. I was really touched and moved by it.
“A special would be great fun and it wouldn’t be too draining and exhausting.”
Ruth, 56, recently vowed that she will never rule out bringing back ‘Gavin and Stacey’.
The 56-year-old writer-and-actress said: “I think we both think that there are pros and cons.
“If I go back to before we did the Christmas special that was 10 years that passed before we did the 2019 special and I think then we thought we would never bring it back again and we did. I don’t know.”

‘People have repeatedly asked the BBC to repeat and they won’t…’ Sarah Greene says you won’t see Ghostwatch again

OHMYGOSSIP — Sarah Greene says cult horror show ‘Ghostwatch’ has been banned from ever being repeated by the BBC because it was too terrifying for viewers.
The found-footage pseudo TV documentary was broadcast on Halloween on BBC One in 1992, and featured Sarah and her late husband Mike Smith as well as TV legend Sir Michael Parkinson – who passed away in August 2023 aged 88 – conducting an apparent live investigation of a haunted house in the fictional Foxhill Drive, Northolt, Greater London.
Greene was ‘reporting live’ from the house to capture paranormal activity by a malevolent entity called ‘Mr. Pipes’ who has been terrorising the Early family, whilst Parkinson presents from the studio and Smith takes ‘calls’ from the public
The programme ends with Mr. Pipes taking over the house and possessing Parkinson in the studio after creating a nationwide séance during the broadcast.
Following its broadcast, ‘Ghostwatch’ attracted thousands of complaints from viewers who believed the events to be real.
In recent years it has gained a cult audience, but despite calls for it to be aired again – as it has been abroad – Greene says the BBC are too nervous to show it again.
Appearing on the ‘Beyond The Title’ podcast, she said: “They won’t even repeat it, people have repeatedly asked the BBC to repeat and they won’t, they won’t repeat it. I think it would be fun.
“But part of me thinks actually it’s probably best they don’t because then it stays in that kind of slightly cult, niche area.”
Greene, 65, doesn’t believe there’s any chance of ‘Ghostwatch’ being re-made either because modern audiences are too smart to be duped.
She added: “I don’t think you could do another one, because it’s been done and people would spot it a mile off. They’d say, ‘Well, this is a drama.’ I don’t know if you could do that again, really. I think the BBC would be very nervous of it.”
The former ‘Going Live’ presenter is very proud of the impact the show had and the fact that it inspired the found-footage horror genre which was popularised by movies like ‘The Blair Witch Project’.
She said: “It went out and it had a huge audience and it had an amazing reaction. It got a massive audience on the night but it sort of gets more popular every year, it gains a new audience and even though it now looks quite old fashioned, it does look old fashioned, I think there’s something about the story, the energy of it that still holds up for people watching it for the first time. I think that’s down to the writing of it and certainly down to Lesley’s direction. I don’t think we realised it was going to be ground-breaking. Mike and I realised there might be a lot of hitting the fan straight after but we didn’t think of it as ground-breaking, I don’t think you ever do at the time, when you’re doing something, you don’t realise, it’s only with hindsight that you see that it did break ground. It laid the foundations for things like The Blair Witch Project, Most Haunted, all those sorts of programmes. “

Amanda Abbington has an ice bath to avoid injuries on Strictly Come Dancing

OHMYGOSSIP — Amanda Abbington has “set up an ice bath” to help her cope with the training regime on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.
The former ‘Sherlock’ star decided to try the freezing recovery treatment favoured by professional athletes to avoid muscle injuries as she prepares to hit the dancefloor on the BBC One ballroom show but her first experience has not inspired her to dunk again in a hurry.
The 51-year-old actress said: “I’ve set up an ice bath outside, I did it once the other day and hated it and won’t ever go in it again! Jonathan, my partner, is super fit and he used to be a stunt performer, so he’s putting me through my paces and just getting my strength up because I’m lazy. I haven’t been to the gym for ages, so I’m trying to get my fitness levels back up, but I’m not doing any dance training. I’m going into it completely fresh. I just want to learn it all from scratch from the professionals, I think that’s the best way to do it really.”
Amanda has had lots of messages of support and advice from former celebrity competitors as she gets ready for her debut dance in front of judges Shirley Ballas, 63, Craig Revel Horwood, 58, Motsi Mabuse, 42, and Anton Du Beke, 57.
She said: “Everybody that I’ve spoken to, like Catherine Tyldesley and Sunetra Sarker, have said just go in and enjoy it. Don’t go in to win it, just have the best time and take it step by step literally. You’ll have the most fun then and that’s what I wanted to do … just come in and have a nice time.”
Amanda is looking forward to the glitz and the glamour of the costumes on the programme – which is hosted by Claudia Winkleman, 51, and 54-year-old Tess Daly – because she is usually “a slob” at home.
She added: “I’m quite a slob in my day-to-day life, I just wear jogging bottoms and T-shirts and vests and things, so I’m really looking forward to wearing all the sequins and glitter. I was rewatching some of the dances and those costumes are wonderful, I’m so excited about the costumes… and false eyelashes!”
‘Strictly Come Dancing’ starts on Saturday (16.09.23) at 6.35pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Angela Rippon is ready for the ‘fun frocks’ on Strictly Come Dancing

OHMYGOSSIP — Angela Rippon is looking forward to wearing all the “fun frocks” on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.
The former presenter of ‘Come Dancing’ – the original ballroom show that inspired ‘Strictly’ and ran from 1949 to 1998 – will become the oldest contestant to hit the dancefloor at 78 when the new series starts this Saturday (16.09.23) on BBC One.
And Angela is ready to embrace the glitz and glamour of the show – which is judged by Shirley Ballas, 63, Craig Revel Horwood, 58, Motsi Mabuse, 42, and Anton Du Beke, 57.
She said: “All my girlfriends are saying, ‘Oh Ange the frocks!’ It’s all part of the package and the fun isn’t it.”
Angela has been an avid viewer of the show and can recall “the many stand out moments” on the show – which has been on air since 2004 – citing dances by former ‘Coronation Street’ star Kym Marsh, 47, and ‘Countryfile’ presenter Helen Skelton, 40.
She said: “Over the years there are many stand out moments. Kym Marsh’s Argentine Tango was amazing, I thought it was stunning. I know Helen Skelton, so it was lovely to watch her develop through her series. There are some wonderful moments in some of the very early competitions too. I expect that the audience stay because at the start there are 15 outstanding moments, then there are 14 outstanding moments, then there are ten, nine etc until you get to the final. Every year there are outstanding moments for everyone!”
Angela has had plenty of advice and tips from her famous pals who have previously competed on ‘Strictly’, including Helen and her ‘Rip-Off Britain’ co-star Gloria Hunniford, 83, as well as ex ‘Dragon’s Den’ star Sara Davies, who instructed her to lean in into the fun.
Angela said: “I’m not sure I should share all the advice I’ve been given! I’ve spoken to Gloria Hunniford, of course, she said she regretted not being able to give as much time rehearsing and practising as she would have liked to, so I’m going to make sure that I do. I have ‘Rip Off Britain’ of course, but I will do my best.
“Helen Skelton sent me some super stuff, and Sara Davies said, ‘Just go out there and enjoy yourself!'”
‘Strictly Come Dancing’ starts on Saturday (16.09.23) at 6.35pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

John Waters believes mainstream Hollywood films are finally as shocking as his cult movies

OHMYGOSSIP — John Waters thinks mainstream Hollywood films are just as shocking as his gross-out cult classics.
The groundbreaking 77-year-old director made his name with the 1972 black comedy ‘Pink Flamingos’ that famously featured the late drag queen Divine eating real dog faeces.
He told Variety about how he believes even mainstream Hollywood films have become as shocking as his old work: “That was stunt work! Eating s*** was the ultimate stunt work. It was about showing things that Hollywood wouldn’t show, and that’s no longer the case.
“Now they’ll show anything. Even Steven Spielberg. The opening of ‘Saving Private Ryan’ is Herschell Gordon Lewis – I mean, full gore.”
John added he thinks the trans representation is one of the few taboos left that is now being explored.
He said when asked what he thought the next generation can do to shock people: “The whole trans/nonbinary thing gets on everyone’s nerves, left and right. Now they have come up with a new way to make both sides nervous.
“The edge has always been: How far can we go to be funny? Lenny Bruce started that… (he) went to jail for saying ‘F***,’ and now ‘F***’ is on television. Is it refreshing to anybody that the censors are now left-wing rather than right?”
John, whose other movie hits include ‘Serial Mom’ starring Kathleen Turner as a killer housewife, packed ‘Pink Flamingos’ with scenes about exhibitionism, voyeurism, sodomy, gluttony, vomiting, rape, incest and murder as well as animal cruelty, cannibalism, castration, foot fetishism and finally scatology.
He said: “I don’t regret any film I ever made. I’ve controlled it enough. I’m just really lucky to get to do it. No matter what the subject matter of your film is… it can be a great experience.
“I haven’t changed. It’s the culture that’s come around. To watch ‘Pink Flamingos’ now is worse because of political correctness.
“You can’t say ‘fat’ anymore. You can’t do anything.
“But I don’t want to retire. I’m busier than I’ve ever been in my entire life.”

Richard Linklater cast Glen Powell in new hitman film due to his shy side

OHMYGOSSIP — Richard Linklater cast Glen Powell in his new hitman film as he though the actor had the same type of shyness as its main character.
The 63-year-old ‘Boyhood’ director’s latest movie is action-comedy ‘Hit Man’ and got a hugely positive reception from audiences and critics when it was shown at this year’s Venice Film Festival, which wrapped up on 9 September.
It features ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ star Glen, 34, playing Gary Johnson, a college professor who secretly works for the New Orleans Police Department to expose assassination plots.
Gary poses as a hitman while the cops listen in, hoping that prospective clients hire him to pull the trigger on a target – leading to them being jailed.
It is based on a true story carried in Texas Monthly magazine in 2001, written by Skip Hollandsworth, 65, who also co-wrote Richard’s 2011 comedy ‘Bernie’ starring Jack Black, 54.
Gary adopts a string of disguises in ‘Hit Man’, making the film a metaphor for the process of acting, which Richard also said perfectly suited Gary’s real-life character.
He told NME: “We have it in the voiceover, where he goes: ‘I was too shy to go out for the school play.’
“So he found his audience (by pretending to be a hitman.)
“A lot of actors are shy and they’re hiding behind characters, and I thought, ‘Oh, there’s an element to Gary (like that.)
“So he finds that niche, stumbles into something he’s good at. It’s all about roles and acting and what is true. They’re all role playing. They’re all acting. But aren’t we all?”
Richard’s new film was screened in Venice as other hitman films were unveiled including David Fincher’s ‘The Killer’ and ‘In the Land of Saints and Sinners’ starring Liam Neeson.
The filmmaker said: “There’s a lot of hitmen movies in the world. I’d like to think mine kind of deconstructs the hitman thing a little bit. I don’t know if anyone noticed, but I’m saying they’re all kind of bulls***!”
