‘A story that could take place everywhere’: Lily Gladstone on the importance of The Memory Police

OHMYGOSSIP — Lily Gladstone thinks ‘The Memory Police’ is so powerful because it is a “story that could take place everywhere”.
The 37-year-old actress is starring in the sci-fi movie which takes place on an island controlled by a hidden force that makes people collectively forget and found the plot particularly hard-hitting as a Native American as it addresses the “effort to erase” culture and language.
Speaking at a screening of her film ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ in Los Angeles on Sunday (18.02.24), Lily said: “It’s the kind of story that could take place everywhere. I think anybody who comes from a world culture or a history where there’s been a systematic effort to erase your sense of who you are, your memories, your language, your culture – in this film, birds are disappeared because they’re deemed unnecessary.”
‘The Memory Police’ is an adaptation of Yoko Ogawa’s novel and will see Lily reunited with Martin Scorsese – who serves as an executive producer – and she explained that the ambiguity of the plot and setting adds to the picture’s message.
She said: “It’s on an unnamed island at an unnamed place, unnamed time. So it takes place nowhere and therefore everywhere.”
Charlie Kaufman has penned the script for the film and Gladstone explained that it will contain aspects of his previous work on movies such as ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’.
Lily said: “The adaptation is done by Charlie Kaufman, so it’s labelled as a sci-fi, but in the way that ‘Eternal Sunshine’ and ‘Synecdoche, New York’ was a sci-fi. It happens very much in the subconscious mind and deals with, of course, themes of memory, authoritarianism.”

Alex Brooker worried Masked Singer bosses thought he would be offended by his costume

OHMYGOSSIP — Alex Brooker thinks ‘The Masked Singer’ bosses worried he would be “offended” by his costume.
The 39-year-old presenter – who had to have his right leg amputated as a baby – finished as runner-up on the ITV1 talent series dressed as the mythical creature and wore a bandage in a nod to his own prosthetic leg but admitted he initially thought producers thought he would be hurt by the costume, even though that was not the case at all.
Speaking on ITV’s ‘Lorraine’, he said: “I just loved messing around. I got out of breath, the Craig David one, I was knackered before I even started. But the thing I love about Bigfoot is the amount of people on social media who said it was me because it looked like me. That’s not how it works!
“I think they were reluctant to show me it because I think they showed me a character with a bad leg that I would be offended, like ‘Oh, we knew you were coming on so we’ve got the one with the bad leg for you!’ And they were really lovely about it. But as soon as I saw it I thought ‘Oh, he’s hurt his foot…Bigfoot!'”
Meanwhile, ‘The Last Leg’ star was pipped to the champion title by McFly star Danny Jones and recalled being able to hear him belt out Celine Dion’s ‘It’s All Coming Back to Me Now’ and jokingly wondered who would want to hear him sing Chesney Hawkes hit ‘The Only and Only’ after such a performance.
“The only time I heard anything properly was in the final and Danny as Pirhana was singing. I could hear him singing and I was just thinking ‘Does anyone really wanna hear me?’

Roman Kemp quits Capital Breakfast after 10 years with the network: ‘I’ve not found this easy…”

OHMYGOSSIP — Roman Kemp has quit ‘Capital Breakfast’
The 31-year-old star first presented a Sunday slot on Capital FM in 2014 and has hosted the breakfast slot since 2017 but announced on Monday (19.02.24) that he has made the difficult decision to step down from the network, with his exit coming in around six weeks.
Speaking live on Monday’s show, he said: “What I can tell you is I’m not saying goodbye right now, I’m not leaving the show today and that’s it, but it’s not far away. It will come and that goodbye will come in five to six weeks. “It’s not a decision that has come overnight either, it’s massive, I’ve not found it easy at all.”
The radio host – who currently presents alongside ‘This Morning’ star Sian Welby and former BBC DJ Chris Stark – has carved out a career in television since making it on the airwaves, notably finishing in third place on ‘I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here’ in 2019 and in 2023 became a main host on ‘The One Show’ alongside Alex Jones.
But the ‘Loose Men’ star insisted that the team at Capital are his “family” and thanked them for sticking with him through thick and thin as he reflected how much the network and its parent company Global have “changed” his his life since he started working there in his early twenties.
Capital is my family, you as the wonderful listeners that you’ve been, you’ve been with me at my best times and my absolute lowest … Capital and Global have helped change me. I was 22 years old when I first joined Capital and it’s built me into the man that I am today, it is all that I know.

Dame Prue Leith clears up ‘misconception’ on her relationship with husband John Playfair

OHMYGOSSIP — Dame Prue Leith struggled to move in with John Playfair because they both had “an enormous amount of stuff” by the time they met.
The 84-year-old cookery writer was initially married to Rayne Kruger from 1974 until his death in 2002 and has son Danny, 49, as well as adoptive daughter Li-Da, 48, with him but struck up a relationship with retired English fashion designer John, 83, in 2011.
The pair eventually tied the knot in 2016 but Prue insisted that the “misconception” that they lived apart stemmed from the fact that they both kept putting off the idea of actually buying property together because they had both accumulated so many belongings by that stage in life.
Speaking on ITV’s ‘Good Morning Britain’, she said: “There’s this wonderful misconception that we lived apart. If you’re our age when you meet, you both have a house and an enormous amount of stuff. I had a nine-bedroom house, a huge great house stuffed full of my children’s stuff and John had a huge house.
“We could never get around to combining the two…you know what it’s like moving, so we never even did it.
“Gradually, we thought it would be nice to build a house of our own and if we started with a new house, then we would both sell our own house. It’s very modern and it’s in the middle of the Cotswolds.”
Meanwhile, ‘The Great British Bake Off’ judge is now fronting her own 10-part series ‘Prue Leith’s Cotswold Kitchen’ – which will air on Saturday mornings on ITV1 – that has been filmed from her home and joked that her “main concern” with the whole thing is that because her husband also features on the show, he might take over in popularity.
She said: “I think a bit of tension [in the kitchen] is good…but my main concern is that John is so good at this that I could be bumped in our family. I am supposed to be the telly star around here! And he is rather funny!”

Sebastian Stan faced prosthetic challenges in A Different Man

OHMYGOSSIP — Sebastian Stan had to overcome the challenges of wearing facial prosthetics in ‘A Different Man’.
The 41-year-old actor stars in the new movie as Edward, an aspiring actor with facial disfigurement who undergoes reconstructive surgery in his attempts to start a new life, and had to adapt to the physical demands of wearing the prosthetics.
Sebastian told The Hollywood Reporter: “You have eyesight only in one eye, and you don’t see someone coming from the other side as quickly.”
Director Aaron Schimberg revealed that the prosthetics even had an influence on Stan’s performance in the second half of the film after Edward had had the reconstructive procedure.
The filmmaker said: “Even though the prosthetics would physically be gone, it would still be there for him (mentally).”
He said: “The prosthetic was something that, when I was writing the script, I thought, ‘Eventually this will get figured out somehow.’ But we’re three weeks away from shooting, and I am like, ‘What are we going to do here?'”
The movie sees Edward become obsessed with an actor called Oswald (Adam Pearson) – who is playing him in a production based on his former life – and Schimberg had trouble trying to incorporate the prosthetic into the picture until Stan came to his aid with a makeup artist.
He said: “The prosthetic was something that, when I was writing the script, I thought, ‘Eventually this will get figured out somehow.’ But we’re three weeks away from shooting and I am like, ‘What are we going to do here?’ There’s no movie without that prosthetic.”
Sebastian is a producer on the flick and reflected on how he had full confidence in Schimberg’s vision for the project.
The ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ star recalled: “I remember Aaron coming in and saying something I’ve never heard a director say before, which was so helpful at the time. [He] essentially sat down and said, ‘I wrote this thing. You guys are the actors. But we’re all here now and we’ve got to make this our own.'”

Christopher Nolan wants to make a horror movie

OHMYGOSSIP — Christopher Nolan wants to make a horror movie.
The ‘Oppenheimer’ director has revealed he is a huge fan of the genre and would relish the opportunity to work on his own horrow film.
During a conversation with the British Film Institute, he said: “I think horror films are very interesting because they depend on very cinematic devices. It’s really about [provoking] a visceral response to things. So at some point, I’d love to make a horror film. But I think a really good horror film requires a really exceptional idea — and those are few and far between. So I haven’t found the story that lends itself to that. But I think it’s a very interesting genre from a cinematic point of view. It’s also one of the few genres where — the studios make a lot of these films — and they’re films that have a lot of bleakness, a lot of abstraction. They have a lot qualities that Hollywood is generally very resistant to putting into films, but that’s a genre where it’s allowable.”
And, Nolan also insisted there are moments of horror in his Oscar nominated historical drama ‘Oppenheimer’.
He said: “Certainly Oppenheimer has elements of horror — which I definitely think is appropriate for the subject matter. The middle of the film is very heavily based on the heist genre, and the third act of the film is the courtroom drama. And the reason I settled on those two genres for those sections is they are mainstream genres in which dialogue and people talking is inherently tense and interesting to an audience. That’s the fun thing with genre — you get to play with a lot of different areas whereas in different type of film you really wouldn’t be allowed to.”

Saoirse Ronan’s partner Jack Lowden recommended latest movie role to her

OHMYGOSSIP — Saoirse Ronan’s partner Jack Lowden recommended her latest movie role to her.
Jack, 33, had read Amy Liptrot’s book ‘The Outrun’ and recommended it to Saoirse, 29, during the Covid 19 lockdown, explaining he thought it would be a perfect role for her.
Saoirse – who stars in and produced the movie – told The Hollywood Reporter: “It was Jack Lowden, who produced as well, who introduced it to me. He’s a very proud Scot and he had spent a bit of time up in the Orkney Islands. Whenever he goes to a new place, he tries to read a book by a writer from that place if he can. So, he had already fallen in love with The Outrun, and when we were in lockdown — going through books because we had all the time in the world — he recommended I read it.
“He said,’“This is the next role that you should play.’ So of course, typical actor, I was chomping at the bit. I think almost everyone’s had their own relationship with addiction, whether that’s been something that you’ve gone through yourself or you’ve watched a loved one go through it. It’s an illness that has affected all of us, in one way or another, and I’m no different. It’s an illness that shaped my life quite dramatically, having not gone through it myself but being on the receiving end of what can come with that. I always wanted to understand it more, because it was something that caused so much pain. I finally felt at a place where I wanted to dive into the other side of it, trying to understand it better.”
‘The Outrun’ stars Saoirse as Rona, a woman struggling with alcoholism.
After losing control of her life, she goes into rehab and then moves home to Scotland’s Orkney Islands, where she grew up.
Saoirse revealed that the addiction issues her character goes through were vital to the movie.
She said: “That was one of the first things that we picked up on. Not only was this going to follow a young female who’s in recovery, but following someone who suffers with alcoholism where the torture, the heartbreak, the spiraling isn’t being motivated solely by her relationship with a man or with her partner. You could even take the addiction element out of it, and it would still be this very relatable story about a period in a woman’s life when she’s moving into her 30s and you’re having to examine your life in a way that you never really did before. This element of the addiction amplifies the journey that we already go on as women at that point in our lives.”

Sir David Jason’s new TV gig

OHMYGOSSIP — Sir David Jason will appear on ‘Car SOS’ next month.
The 83-year-old ‘Only Fools and Horses’ actor will join hosts Tim Shaw and Fuzz Townshend as they work to restore a Datsun 240k Skyline.
A source told the Daily Star newspaper: “David is going to be a special guest on the new series. It’s a big deal to have him on the show because he’s such a legend.
“Producers were absolutely thrilled when he agreed to take part.
“David is one of the nation’s most popular stars, so getting him involved is bound to boost viewing figures.”
The episode will air on March 7.
Meanwhile, David recently insisted that an ‘Only Fools And Horses’ revival “just wouldn’t work”.
Speaking with Radio Times magazine alongside Jay Blades, the pair were asked if an ‘Only Fools and Horses’ revival was possible, to which the 53-year-old TV star said: “Oh, I’d love that. I want to be in it. I could be a long-lost nephew.”
David quickly added that he believed a reunion “wouldn’t work” due to the loss of the sitcom’s creator John Sullivan – who died in 2011 – who he described as a “magician”.
He said: “You’d be long, long, long lost if you appeared in it.
“I’ve had offers over the years, but without John Sullivan it just wouldn’t work. He was a magician and could whip up humour out of virtually nothing – that was his genius.
“Without him, I don’t see it working, sadly.”
Despite his insistence on the show staying in the past, David emphasised it was a ‘privilege” to have appeared in ‘Only Fools and Horses’, and commented on his status as a “national treasure”.
Speaking to The Times newspaper, he said: “Being part of ‘Only Fools and Horses’ is a privilege.
“I know how much it has meant to so many people.
“I hope I never take the title ‘national treasure’ too seriously – I call myself the ‘leg end’, but it’s humbling that people see me that way.”

Masked Singer judges want royal contestant

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘The Masked Singer’ judges want a royal contestant next year.
Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Mo Gilligan have revealed they are eager for a member of the royal family to join the sixth season of the show, with Zara Phillips’ husband Mike Tindall and Catherine, Princess of Wales, topping the list.
Jonathan told The Sun newspaper: “Any royal would be good fun. Mike Tindall would be good. If Kate’s got some spare time and wants to do it, she’d be great!”
He went on: “Richard Madeley would be good, I think, behind a mask and I’d love to see Gordon Ramsey, because he’d lose his temper when we were guessing wrong about him.”
Catherine – who is married to Prince William – is known to be a fan of reality TV show ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ and even paid a visit to the set of the BBC programme with her two youngest children, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five, in December.
The children were allowed to sit in the judges’ chairs and use the scoring paddles to critique Katya Jones and Neil Jones.
A source told The Sun on Sunday newspaper at the time: “Kate and Charlotte are huge fans of ‘Strictly’ so they were delighted to be invited.
“Kate took pictures of the children in the judges’ seats. She seemed really relaxed and was all smiles.
“She was polite, sweet and charming with everyone and made sure Louis didn’t get over-excited.
“There was a strict security lockdown on set and staff were told not to take any photos.
“The children were especially excited and got dressed up.
“They were thrilled to be on set and to meet their favourite celebrities.”
The royals were introduced to presenters Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, and met professional dancers including Dianne Buswell and Nadiya Bychkova.
King Charles and Queen Camilla are also huge fans of ‘Strictly’, as was the late monarch Queen Elizabeth.

Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won’t quit Dancing On Ice

OHMYGOSSIP — Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won’t quit ‘Dancing On Ice’.
Although they recently announced their retirement from their partnership after 50 years skating together, they have no plans to quit their judging roles on ‘Dancing On Ice’.
‘DOI’ creative director Dan Whiston told The Sun newspaper: “I’m 100 per cent grateful to Jayne and Chris because if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be where I am now.
“I feel like they groomed me for this position I do now, so I’m super grateful and they’re very close friends of mine as well. It’s bittersweet.
“I’m super, super sad they’re retiring, but at the same time I think there could be other things happening there.
“I don’t want to give it away too much but they have given so much to ‘Dancing on Ice’. I think it’s just a time to celebrate their career and what a wonderful time it’s been.
“Without them there wouldn’t have been a ‘Dancing on Ice’ so, for me, it’s a huge celebration.
“They’ll be continuing obviously with the show.”
The pair also believe their partnership has lasted so long, because they have not been romantically involved.
The ice skaters – who claimed the gold medal at the Sarajevo Winter Olympics in 1984 – believe their partnership has endured because it has been strictly professional.
Jayne told the Daily Mail they made a “conscious decision” to put ice-skating first, while Christopher joked: “Maybe that’s why we’ve stayed together for long — because we never got married!”
Jayne has been married for 34 years to sound engineer Phil Christensen, and they have two children, Kieran, 21, and Jessica, 17.
Christopher has been in a relationship with ‘Dancing on Ice’ star Karen Barber since 2011 and has sons, Jack, 25, and Sam, 23, with ex-wife Jill Trenary.

Jack Tweed warns Bobby Brazier about Big Brother

OHMYGOSSIP — Jack Tweed has warned Bobby Brazier about taking part in ‘Celebrity Big Brother’.
Amid reports that Bobby, 20, is set to follow in his late mother, Jade Goody’s footsteps by taking part in the reality TV show, her widower Jack warned Bobby about how it affected her life.
Jack told The Daily Mail: “My advice would be to stay well clear. It is not worth it. Me and Jade did not have a great experience. It ended in disaster. It caused a lot of problems. If they asked me what I think having been on it myself I would say avoid it.
“It’s very hard to trust people in that industry. I found people constantly trying to turn you over and out to get you for their own benefit. It’s the nature of the beast. A lot of people were going behind Jade’s back to make money from her. It’s about greed. That world is full of snakes.”
Jade was a breakout star of ‘Big Brother’ in 2022 and returned to the franchise for ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ in 2007.
However, her image was tarnished after she became caught up in a race row during her second stint on the show.
Meanwhile, Jack previously insisted that Jade would be “bursting with pride” at seeing Bobby take part in ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.
The reality TV star passed away after in 2009 at the age of 27 following a battle with cervical cancer and Jack told The Sun: “For someone so young he has already achieved so much. Bobby has modelled for Dolce Gabbana and all the top brands.
“Then he went on to get a job on ‘EastEnders’ and now he’s appearing on ‘Strictly’. Seeing Bobby grow into such a nice young man has been a lovely thing to see.
“He is absolutely smashing it. Jade would be bursting with pride.”
Jack revealed Jade was a ‘Strictly’ superfan, so seeing her son – who she shared with former partner Jeff Brazier – competing on the show, would have been a dream come true.
He said: “Jade absolutely loved dancing shows like ‘Strictly’.
“She was really talented and an amazing singer. She won TV’s ‘Stars In Their Eyes’ in 2006 because of how great her voice was.
“Anything Jade put her mind to, she would be amazing at it. She would have won ‘Strictly’ if she’d had the chance, and Bobby’s just like her.
“Whatever he puts his mind to, he achieves it.”

Danny explained: “I’m able to singer higher now. I’ve gone up a whole tone.”
The ‘Masked Singer’ judges – Jonathan Ross, Rita Ora, Davina McCall, Rob Brydon and Mo Gilligan – all praised Danny’s singing skills.
Rob even joked that he should quit McFly and pursue more solo success.
The 58-year-old comedy star quipped: “If we’ve learned anything, it’s time to dump those losers – those guys have been holding you back!”
Earlier in the night, Alex Brooker was unmasked as Bigfoot.

Greg Rutherford’s fiancee urges him to be sexier on Dancing On Ice

OHMYGOSSIP — Greg Rutherford’s fiancee wants him to act “way sexier” on ‘Dancing On Ice’.
The 37-year-old Olympian – who is partnered by Vanessa James on the show – has been getting a lot of help from former dancer Susie Verrill and she’s urged him to find the passion in his performances, as well as thinking more about his facial expressions because he often looks “like he wants to murder somebody” when he’s concentrating on the routines.
Greg told the Sunday Mirror newspaper: “The great thing about Susie is that because she used to be a dancer, she gets it, and she helps when I’m home – trying to explain how it should look. She’s always telling me to try to make the routines as sexy as possible.
“Some partners are watching, thinking, ‘I don’t know about that,’ but she’s like, ‘Make it look way sexier than you are’. She’s very good like that, and she definitely helps the performance side of things. Sometimes when I think I’m selling something, I’m really not.
“She’s said to me before, ‘You just look like you want to murder someone… your concentrated face is that strong’. So I’ve been trying very hard not to have that face.” Greg added: “So far, I think I’m doing OK – I look like I might want to just maim someone… something that wouldn’t have a long prison sentence.”
But while the long jumper is thankful for Susie’s critique, he admitted he’s faced no harsher judge than his three-year-old daughter Daphne.
He said of the youngster: “She’s been watching from home and scoring but she is absolutely brutal. She is the harshest ice skating critic ever
– she has given me a score of two before. I want to introduce her to Torvill and Dean after the show tonight.”

Bobby Brazier got ‘pretty close’ to Ellie Leach

OHMYGOSSIP — Bobby Brazier has met Ellie Leach’s parents.
The ‘EastEnders’ actor is rumoured to have grown close to the 22-year-old actress while on the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ tour and though he didn’t confirm they are seeing one another romantically, he admitted performing on the production had strengthened their bond.
He told The Sun on Sunday newspaper’s Bizarre column: “I made good friends with Ellie.
“We spent a lot of time together on the tour, which I love because we were just always pretty close to each other, but that’s all.
“I hope to stay in touch with her. I met her parents too, they’re brilliant.
“The tour was always fun backstage, it was like one big party and we got to become better friends with people.”
But Bobby claimed he spent Valentine’s Day (14.02.14) alone.
He said: “I was on my own eating watermelon and watching TV. I’m all about love.”
The 20-year-old actor has been inundated with female attention since appearing on ‘Strictly’ – but insisted there were no romantic prospects among his fans.
He laughed: “It’s either ten-year-old girls who are really excited to see me, or 80-year-old nans who are really excited to see me — and there’s not much in between.”
While he made it to the final of the Latin and ballroom show – which was won by Ellie and her partner Vito Coppola – with professional Dianne Buswell, Bobby isn’t planning to take his dancing further.
He said: “I’m focusing on acting.
“My dream role would be a nice romantic film or like a crazy, party person, starring in a movie like The Hangover, which would be fun to watch.
“My favourite actor is Joaquin Phoenix, who played The Joker. He’s unbelievable.
“I can’t wait to go back to ‘EastEnders’. I go back on Monday. I’ve really missed everyone.”
Meanwhile, Bobby’s dad, Jeff Brazier, could follow him onto ‘Strictly’ and he’s already impressed Dianne.
He said: “Dad’s got great rhythm. Diane got him in hold once and she said that he was good.”

Johan Renck celebrates Adam Sandler’s ‘formidable’ performance in Spaceman

OHMYGOSSIP — Johan Renck doesn’t think ‘Spaceman’ could exist without Adam Sandler’s “formidable and amazing” performance.
The Swedish director cast the ‘Happy Gilmore’ star as lonely Czech cosmonaut Jakub, who befriends a giant telepathic space spider while on a solo mission in his new movie – which is adapted from Jaroslav Kalfar’s novel ‘Spaceman of Bohemia’ – and while he found much of making the film to be a “frustrating” experience, his leading man’s work made it all worthwhile.
Johan told The Hollywood Reporter: “When I look at this film now and I look at Adam’s performance, it’s phenomenal. He was hanging there on the wires. And he’s no spring chicken anymore. He’s not a gymnast or a bodybuilder.
“And he’s hanging in mid-air, acting against a tennis ball, with me around the corner reading lines.
“Then you look at the film and see the profound curiosity in his eyes, the bafflement, all these subtle details. All this acting against a tennis ball.
“I would come home every day after the shoot, feeling tremendously frustrated because I only had one-half of the movie. It took months and months as we created the creature, did the voice, everything.
“Paul Dano was my first choice [for the voice of the space spider Hanus]. I wanted him for his cadence, for his personality. He was perfect.
“But the way you shoot a film like this, there’s no point in recording anything before, so his voice was recorded after the movie was cut. It was a tricky way to make a movie.
“But through it all, what kept on baffling me was this tremendous strength in Adam’s performance, the nature of this thing he’d done.
“I love Adam. He’s the best human being on the planet. He’s a tremendous actor, formidable and amazing. This film would not exist in any shape or form without him.”
Carey Mulligan also appears in the film as Jakub’s pregnant wife Lenka, and Johan admitted the strength of the two star’s performances often left him thinking there was no need to be on set to guide them.
He said: “Carey is the most exquisite actor I’ve ever worked with. She’s so technically perfect and so delightful as a human being. She takes the work so seriously, like I do. I’m a very serious person in what I do. So it was just a joy to work with her.
“I’d say to her once she got into character with Adam, that I didn’t even need to be there on set. I could go home and play with my kids because you guys have got this.
“She’s really a master as an actress, and so versatile. She can do anything. It’s bliss to work with very talented people. It makes my job tremendously easy.”

S J Clarkson didn’t want to be ‘greedy’ with too many origin stories in Madame Web

OHMYGOSSIP — S.J. Clarkson thought it would “be a bit greedy” to explain the origin stories of all ‘Madame Web’s Spider-Women.
The superhero film tells the origin story of Cassandra ‘Cassie’ Webb (Dakota Johnson), who is later known as Madame Web, but audiences are also introduced to three other characters, Julia Cornwall (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor) and Ayna Corazon (Isabela Merced) who eventually become different iterations of Spider-Women and the director admitted it was an intentional decision not to explain how and why they acquired their superpowers.
She told ComicBook: “Well, I thought it would be a bit greedy to do four origin stories,” Clarkson told ComicBook in an interview. “That’s not really fair, is it? I’ve got to share it. Come on. I mean, first and foremost, it’s Madame Web, right? But I hope the exciting thing about it is, this is a tease.
“And I think the origin story of the girls, we’re given, hopefully, a hint of the spirit of who they are.
“We’ve tried to stick to the spirit from the comic books, and draw from that and find out who they are and get a little bit of their sass and a little bit of their character coming through.”
And the ‘Jessica Jones’ director insisted it wouldn’t “do any of them justice” to try and fit so much detail into just one movie.
She added: “But that’s a lot of story to tell, I think, in one [movie]. And I think it wouldn’t do any of them justice to try and sort of crowbar or cram it all into one movie. So I think it’s Madame Web’s, and here’s kind of the development of something else underneath it.”
Dakota recently revealed “drastic changes” were made to the movie when she signed on, with the script overhauled completely.
She told TheWrap: “There were drastic changes. And I can’t even tell you what they were.”
The star’s character in the Sony Spider-Man Universe movie has the ability to see the future but this meant an increased workload as she needed to film several versions of the same scene.
She said: “It added so many different camera set-ups, like triple the amount of work.
“And it was very complex, and there’s only like minor differences between each version of the same scene, so it was like puzzle pieces, and really paying attention to what moment we’re in, and what angle we’re in, and continuity and things like that.”
