Armie Hammer hints at The Man of U.N.C.L.E sequel

OHMYGOSSIP — Armie Hammer has hinted that ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E’ is set to get a sequel.
The 30-year-old actor has teased that Lionel Wigram, who wrote the script for the first film, is working on a follow-up to Guy Ritchie’s 2015 action-comedy after he called him and asked him what the “deal was” following months of speculation.
Armie, who played Illya Kuryakin in the film, told IndieWire: “I called Lionel Wigram, the producer of the movie, and he and Guy produced it and wrote it all together.
“I was like ‘dude what’s the deal? I get asked about this s*** all the time. Can you just write a sequel?’
“He was like ‘you know what? Yeah f*** it I’ll do it. Sure I’ll write a sequel.’ I was like ‘if you write one, I’m sure we can get one made’ so who knows?”
Armie starred in the blockbuster, which is the movie adaption of the 1960s TV show, alongside ‘Man of Steel’ star Henry Cavill and Alicia Vikander.
The film is set in the 1960s during the Cold War and follows CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB operative Kuryakin, who have to work together to bring down a criminal organisation.
Armie said: “Today is the first day I’ve actually told anyone that story. I only told one other person who asked.
“Apparently the sequel is being written right now. No pressure Lionel.”
Warner Bros. has yet to formally commission the film but the first film ended leaving audience’s anticipating a sequel.
Lionel is currently producing the sequel to ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ and also wrote and produced Guy’s ‘King Arthur: Legend of the Sword’.
Guy is also preparing to direct Disney’s live-action ‘Aladdin’.

Paul O'Grady accepts role on Blind Date to stop Vicky Pattison being presenter

OHMYGOSSIP — Paul O’Grady agreed to do the ‘Blind Date’ reboot to stop Vicky Pattison from nabbing the role.
The 61-year-old presenter originally turned down the opportunity to take over as the host of the dating show but had a sudden change of heart when he heard a number of “reality TV stars” were in the running for the show because he didn’t want it to destroy all the hard work his late friend Cilla Black, who presented the series from 1985 until 2003, had done over the years.
Speaking to Daily Star newspaper, he said: “I said no at first. I was very wary because Cilla’s so associated with it and it’s such an iconic show. I didn’t want to mess it up.
“Then I was terrified they were going to give it to some reality person to host and it would be shunted to a late-night slot in between programmes called ‘Dogs on the Dole’ and ‘My Left Breast’.”
And it looks like Paul has something against reality TV as he told Channel 5, who will screen the revival, that he didn’t want anyone from ‘The Only Way is Essex’ to take part in the programme.
He told the TV Times magazine: “We’re going to take ‘Blind Date’ back to its roots – a gentle, funny show. I told Channel 5 I don’t want any of the ‘TOWIE’ lot or contestants that have been on telly before, there’s too much of that on TV now and I’m not interested.”
The classic game show was fronted by Cilla for almost two decades and, although a reboot has been in the pipeline for some time, she tragically passed away in 2015 following a fatal fall.
A source previously revealed: “‘Blind Date’ is the original dating show and it’s huge news to bring it back. It’s a classic format that will be rebooted to make it young, sexy and modern. Expect sparks to fly. In an age of Tinder, you have got to earn the right to love on this show.”
Bosses are keen to keep some of the “traditional” elements of the previous run but have decided to give it an updated twist to appeal to a “new generation of viewers”.
It’s expected to run on Friday nights – rather than its traditional Saturday night slot – and will consist of six to eight episodes per series for the first few installments.
The programme sees three singletons grilled by a member of the opposite sex in order to find the perfect match without being able to see them. The new couple then pick an envelope with their holiday destination – abroad or in the UK – inside and will spend the next week trying to get to know one another.
Channel 5 have bought the rights to the dating show but they will have some stiff competition from ITV as it has ‘Take Me Out’ and ‘Meet The Parents’.
‘Blind Date’ proved a hit with viewers for years but the plug was pulled in 2003 when Cilla announced she was quitting during a live episode following a drop in ratings.

David Oyelowo signs on for Only You

OHMYGOSSIP — David Oyelowo is to star in ‘Only You’.
The 41-year-old actor has signed up to appear in the upcoming time-travel thriller in an unknown role, and will also serve as executive producer on the project, Deadline reports.
‘Mean Creek’s Jacob Estes is directing the movie from his own script.
The movie is being made by Blumhouse productions – who have recently been responsible for Jordan Peele’s successful horror ‘Get Out’ and M. Night Shyalaman’s ‘Split’ – with their own Jason Blum serving as producer.
Alongside the ‘Selma’ actor Jeanette Bolturno, Jay Martin and Couper Samuelson will also executive produce.
No other casting details, or a release date, have yet been confirmed.
Meanwhile, David recently revealed he wants more female directors in the film industry and acknowledged that one of the “biggest challenges” of modern day film-making is getting people to leave their homes to watch a film.
He said: “I’d love to see a lot more movie stars demanding that female directors be considered for their movies…
“The biggest challenge [of working in movies in 2017] is getting people to actually leave their homes to go and watch a film in a movie theatre. There’s so much great television these days, it means your film has to be exceptional to persuade people to leave the house.”
But the ‘Queen of Katwe’ star previously admitted he is a reluctant “spokesperson for diversity”.
He explained: “I am a spokesperson for diversity, reluctantly. Because if I don’t do it, then I am part of the problem. And we do have a problem. I recently worked with four female directors in a row and that has been made such a big deal of. No one highlights when an actor works with 15,20,25 male directors in a row.
“My refrain is that we need to stop talking about diversity and just start doing diversity. We all have our bias, so the only way to have true diversity is to have more of a mix of people who are decision-makers in order that their natural bias is what is seen.”

Amy Schumer joins I Feel Pretty

OHMYGOSSIP — Amy Schumer is to star in ‘I Feel Pretty’.
The 35-year-old actress will appear in and produce the upcoming romantic comedy, though her role in the project has not yet been revealed.
The plot for the movie is being kept under wraps by writers and directors Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, who will be making their directorial debut with the film.
Amy has brought her production pal Kevin Kane – who has worked with her on ‘Trainwreck’ and ‘Inside Amy Schumer’ to join her on the project as co-producer for the Voltage-funded project, which also has Jonathan Deckter as executive producer.
It might be Kohn and Silverstein’s first directorial project but the pair have previously paired up to pen ‘Never Been Kissed’, ‘He’s Just Not That Into You’, ‘The Vow and ‘How to Be Single’.
Producing ‘I Feel Pretty’ is Wonderland’s McG and Mary Viola alongside Voltage’s Alissa Phillips, Dominic Rustam and Nicolas Chartier.
The ‘Trainwreck’ star has a busy schedule ahead – she will next be seen on screen next month alongside Goldie Hawn in upcoming comedy ‘Snatched’, and later opposite Miles Teller in Jason Hall’s drama ‘Thank You for Your Service’.
But Amy recently pulled out of the upcoming ‘Barbie’ film – in which she was to star as a character expelled from Barbieland for failing to live up to the perfection expected of its residents – because of “scheduling conflicts”.
In a statement, she said: “Sadly, I’m no longer able to commit to ‘Barbie’ due to scheduling conflicts. The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”

Chanelle Hayes is expecting baby boy

OHMYGOSSIP — Chanelle Hayes is reportedly expecting a baby boy.
The 29-year-old television personality – who already has six-year-old son Blakely with her ex Matthew Bates – was “so convinced” she was carrying a little girl due to the horrendous morning sickness she’s been battling, so was surprised to learn that she and her boyfriend Ryan Oates are set to welcome a son into the world this year.
A source told The Sun newspaper: “She desperately wanted a baby girl this time and convinced herself it was a girl as her morning sickness was so bad.”
The brunette beauty announced she was pregnant with her second child two months ago but admitted the news came as a surprise as she didn’t think she could have any more children due to the fact she now suffers with polycystic ovaries.
A spokesperson for Chanelle said at the time: “I’m delighted to confirm that Chanelle Hayes is pregnant with her second child.
“Although the news came as some surprise, Chanelle, her partner Ryan and son Blakely are incredibly excited to welcome the new arrival later this year.”
Doctors previously told her she wouldn’t be able to fall pregnant naturally until she dropped a few dress sizes because her love of sugary snacks has interfered with her menstrual cycle.
Chanelle was also told she was on the cusp of Type 2 diabetes – a lifelong condition that causes a person’s blood sugar level to become too high – and doctors will continue to monitor her waistline and symptoms until she’s managed to lose weight.
She said: “They’ve kind of said if you get any tingling in your limbs or lower limbs and stuff like that. They are keeping an eye on things. They want to do measurements.”

Ferne McCann moving in with boyfriend

OHMYGOSSIP — Ferne McCann’s boyfriend is moving in with her.
The former ‘Only Way is Essex’ star may have only been dating Arthur Collins for a few months but she insists having him living in her home is right for their relationship as they are always together anyway.
She said: “We spend every night together anyway. Moving in is definitely the next step. And I know that seems a bit rushed, but when you know, you know. And we’ve been mucking about, so let’s just go for it!”
And the ‘This Morning’ star – who met Arthur on Instagram last summer, though their relationship only turned serious recently – admitted she and her partner have even begun planning their wedding, although they are not engaged yet.
She said: “We’ve spoken about our wedding. We want to get married on a beach. I want it to be a party and a celebration.
“I want these long extensions, mermaid-style hair covering my breasts, with flowers in my hair and no shoes. He can wear shorts and a shirt undone, then we want an amazing DJ with bongos and a saxophonist.”
Ferne, 26, is also keen to settle down and have children with Arthur.
Asked if she’s feeling broody, she told OK! magazine: “Oh my God, yes! I’ve always wanted to have kids, so it’s just waiting for the right time.”
After connecting on social media, the couple dated on and off for a few months, before going their separate ways as their romance “wasn’t going anywhere”.
Ferne then went looking for love on ‘Celebs Go Dating’, much to Arthur’s unhappiness.
He admitted: “I only watched it a few times – I was a little bit [jealous], yes! I didn’t watch too much of it because I didn’t want to see her going on dates.”
But at the end of the series, the presenter reached back out to her former lover and they picked up their relationship.
She recalled: “At the end of the series I got back in touch and said: ‘Let’s go out for dinner again’, and that sparked up the relationship again.”

Broadchurch will 'absolutely' not return in the future

OHMYGOSSIP — Chris Chibnall is “absolutely” certain that ‘Broadchurch’ won’t return for another series.
Fans of the crime drama were able to breathe a sigh of relief after last night’s (17.04.17) concluding episode when Trish Winterman’s (Julie Hesmondhalgh) rapist was finally revealed following eight agonising weeks of a gripping whodunnit saga.
But, although it’s received rave reviews, the show’s creator is adamant he’ll never write more content for the programme, which stars David Tennant and Olivia Colman as detectives Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller, and is surprised by the success its had since 2013.
He said on Radio 4’s Today: “There will be no more after this one, absolutely. It’s been an extraordinary journey with the show it has taken us all by surprise.”
Viewers were left on the edge of their seats when the third – and final – series concluded with the bombshell that taxi driver Clive Lucas’ (Sebastian Armesto) son Michael Lucas (Deon Lee-Williams) was guilty of raping Trish all along.
The schoolboy was forced to carry out the sickening assault by Leo Humphries (Chris Mason) after he groomed him to become a rapist, supplied him with booze, assaulted Trish with a cricket bat and filmed the sexual assault on his phone.
However, viewers were kept guessing right up until the last minute as Chibnall had made sure that a number of potential culprits were kept on the scene.
The 47-year-old writer even changed his mind on the offender mid-way through the series.
He said at the time: “I wrote episode one draft one and I thought it was somebody and then I was thinking about it and I was like, ‘Oh, actually, that’s how it should resolve.’ It changed slightly but then from the second draft of episode one [it was] always the same.”
Although ‘Broadchurch’ is over for good, Chibnall’s talented work will still grace screens as he’s about to take over from Steven Moffat as the show runner of sci-fi series ‘Doctor Who’.
The screen writer will take hold of the reins from next year when he’s joined by a new time-travelling scientist following Peter Capaldi’s decision to step down as the titular character.

Bear Grylls reveals Donald Trump ambition

OHMYGOSSIP — Bear Grylls wants to go on an adventure with US President Donald Trump.
The 42-year-old TV star – who previously shared the spotlight with Barack Obama on his NBC programme ‘Running Wild with Bear Grylls’ – has admitted Trump would be a dream guest on one of his shows, but he’s not sure the President would be well suited to the task.
He said: “It would be amazing. Of course. And, there’s no doubting he’s tenacious.
“Obama liked stepping out of his comfort zone, and that attitude is good in the wild. He told me it was one of the best days of his presidency.
“But I don’t know … Donald Trump is a person who likes to be king and the one thing I’ve learnt in the wild is you’re never the king. You’ve got to learn to put the crown down.”
Bear also conceded that Trump has probably got bigger issues on his mind at the moment.
He told the Radio Times: “I kind of hope he’s got more important things to do than to go on an adventure with me.”
Meanwhile, Bear has credited his career success to his own determination, admitting he wasn’t blessed with natural athleticism or intelligence.
The adventurer shared: “I was never very brilliant at school. Never the sportiest or the cleverest, but the one thing I could control was I could be determined.
“The SAS was the first time I really proved that to myself, when I passed selection. And ever since I have learnt on that feeling, that if I hang on in there I can do it.”
Bear said, too, that his time at boys’ boarding school Eton in England played a big part in his personal development.
He recalled: “I look back on that time and think it gave me some of my strongest memories and best friends of my life.
“It was a totally forward-thinking, progressive school and I am always grateful to them.”

Dean Gaffney returning to EastEnders as Robbie Jackson

OHMYGOSSIP — Dean Gaffney is to return to ‘EastEnders’ on a full-time contract for the first time in 14 years.
The 39-year-old actor is reprising his role as road sweeper Robbie Jackson in the BBC One soap and is thrilled to be reunited with his cast mates.
According to The Sun newspaper: he said: “I’m really happy to be back.
“I’m so lucky to be given the chance to work again with such a talented group of people. A big thank you to Sean and the team.
“I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
The soap’s executive producer, Sean O’Connor added: “I’m thrilled to welcome back Dean as Robbie Jackson, one of EastEnders’ most loved and most popular characters.
“Bridge Street Market has never quite been the same without Robbie policing it in his hi-viz jacket.
“Dean brings a wonderful warmth and fun to his portrayal of Robbie and I’m sure that audiences will take him to their hearts again, just as they have always done.”
Since he was axed from the show in 2003, he returned for a few episodes in both 2004 and 2010 for various Jackson family events, and in September 2015, he made a brief comeback for his mother Carol Jackson’s [Lindsey Coulson] send-off.
Robbie is set to return from India where he has been living with his wife Nita.
Dean said in October 2015, that he was keen to return for a longer stint on the soap so he can find out just what trouble his character has got himself into since moving abroad.
He said: “It would be interesting to see where Robbie’s been. It’s been nice to dip in for these eight episodes but they haven’t really gone down the route of what Robbie’s actually been up to as obviously it’s feeding into Lindsey’s [Coulson] storyline, who plays Carol, so it would be interesting to see if they want to take that up in the future.”
Robbie is set to return to Walford in the coming weeks.

New Stars Wars spin-off 'to be announced soon'

OHMYGOSSIP — The next ‘Star Wars’ spin-off movie could be announced this summer.
Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy has revealed the movie studio is close to finalising the next spin-off picture, following ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ and ‘Han Solo: A Star Wars Story’, which is due out next year.
Asked when the next spin-off movie may be announced, she said: “I think we’re getting close. My hope would be sometime around the summer. I never want to predict the creative process because it is its own thing, so we’re in the midst of those discussions right now.”
Kathleen admitted Lucasfilm hasn’t got the future of the ‘Star Wars’ franchise planned out in detail.
In fact, she revealed that discussions are going on all the time over potential stories for the sci-fi series.
She explained to MTV: “I’m sure everybody would love for me to say, ‘Oh yeah we’ve got this figured out for the next 20 years.’ No, we spend a lot of time talking, debating, watching, looking at what connects with ourselves, with the audience, all of that is a part of our decision-making.
“We’re asking those questions right now. We’ll make a decision soon.”
Earlier this month, meanwhile, Kathleen confirmed the late Carrie Fisher will not be appearing in ‘Star Wars Episode IX’ – even though her brother Todd Fisher hinted she would.
Todd claimed the late actress – who passed away on December 27 – would still be making an appearance as Princess Leia in the movie using archive footage from previous ventures.
But Kathleen recently said Todd was “confused”, insisting Carrie will not be featured in the movie.
Kathleen said: “Sadly, Carrie will not be in nine.”

James Gunn to direct and write third Guardians of the Galaxy

OHMYGOSSIP — James Gunn is to direct and write the third ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ film.
The 46-year-old filmmaker announced his decision on Facebook on Monday evening (17.04.17) to reprise his role for the next instalment of the Marvel science-fiction blockbuster after several discussions and meetings, despite ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ not even being in cinemas yet.
He wrote on his page on the social media site: “So, after many months of ruminations and discussions, I know the answer. I could save this answer for the first, random interviewer to ask me during the press junket but instead I thought I’d share it with the most important people in the Guardiansverse – you, the fans, who have been so incredibly supportive and enthusiastic over the past five years, it has moved me to tears on a regular basis. So, yes, I’m returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. (sic)”
Meanwhile, Gunn previously revealed the second film – which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Kurt Russell – won’t feature the colour purple as he banned it.
The screenwriter and director wanted it to be very visual but deliberately tried to stay away from particular hues he felt had been used a lot in his original movie in order to give the new film a style of its own.
He explained: “I wanted to make the second movie have a very distinct visual look that was much different than the first movie.
“One of the first things I did was ban the use of the colour purple.
“There’s purple in the movie, but there’s very little purple in the movie. Because purple was by far the dominant colour in the first movie.
“This movie is more about yellow and blue and teal and orange.
“But I also really wanted to up the ante with the pulp elements.
“So we harken back a lot to 1950s/60s pulp novel colours and that look of ‘Flash Gordon’ – both the 1980s version and the earlier comics. Really grabbing onto this pulp feeling an bringing it alive in a bright, big, colourful way was important.”

Holly Willoughby will never compete on Strictly Come Dancing

OHMYGOSSIP — Holly Willoughby thinks she would be “horrendous” on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.
The 36-year-old television personality has revealed she has no plans to take part on the BBC competition because she claims she is not “good” at dancing, and she thinks she would be on par with Ed Balls who was voted out in week 10 of last year’s series.
Speaking about the possibility of appearing on the programme to the Daily Star newspaper, the blonde-haired beauty said: “Everyone would be watching me do it and that would be horrendous because I’m not very good at dancing.
“I’d probably be as bad as Ed Balls. I’d be more Ed Balls than Abbey Clancy, put it that way.”
However, the ‘This Morning’ co-host – who regularly helms the show with Phillip Schofield – has revealed she would “love” to learn how to dance and to perfect her moves, but not on television, which is broadcasted to a large audience.
She said: “I’d love to learn to dance but I wouldn’t want to do it on telly.”
Meanwhile, Holly – who has Harry, seven, Belle, six, and Chester, two, with her husband Daniel Baldwin – is growing increasingly frustrated by speculation she is pregnant.
Speaking previously about the growing speculation around his colleague, Phillip said: “The minute she’s off poorly everyone says she’s pregnant. If we do an item with drinks she doesn’t like and she doesn’t have one, it’s ‘ooh she must be pregnant’. It drives her mad.”
Holly had to take a couple of days away from the show earlier this month after falling ill.
Speaking on the show at the time, Phillip said: “Holly is not well. There is a bug in the Willoughby-Baldwin household, and Belle [her daughter] is ill again. So she’s not well and also having to cope with poorly children as well.”

Lottie Moss will 'never' join Made in Chelsea

OHMYGOSSIP — Lottie Moss will “never” join ‘Made in Chelsea’, according to Georgia Toffolo.
The 19-year-old model is currently dating dark haired hunk Alex Mytton, and she is also good friends with Georgia, as well as Frankie Gaff and Emily Blackwell who star on the E4 show, but the blonde beauty has no plans to join the programme.
Speaking about the possibility of the catwalk icon appearing in a future series, the blonde beauty – who is nicknamed Toff – said: “I’m good friends with Lottie and see her a lot, but she would never come on the show.”
And the reality star has teased her new beau could feature in a forthcoming episode.
When asked about her love life and if she is dating anyone, she said: “Yes. Keep on watching, because I can’t say anything about him at the moment.”
This season of ‘Made in Chelsea’ has seen the arrival of newcomer Mimi and Georgia has admitted she has formed a close bond to the Canadian star because she is “honest”.
Georgia said: “I’ve made new girlfriends, which is really nice. I love Mimi.
“[We are] really, really close. She’s honest, unlike some girls. She’s not shady and doesn’t go behind other girls’ backs.
“She’s headstrong and very confident, which the other girls find intimidating.”
And Georgia, who previously dated her co-star Francis Boulle briefly on the show, before he embarked on a brief romance with Olivia Bentley, has admitted she feels “awkward” when she sees her former flame.
Speaking about the 28-year-old television personality, the 22-year-old star told Star! magazine: “After a guy treats you like that you should stay clear. I don’t even talk to him, really. I say hi, but it’s awkward when we’re in the same room.”

Chris Chibnall shed 'a few tears' filming Broadchurch finale

OHMYGOSSIP — Chris Chibnall shed “a few tears” filming the final episode of ‘Broadchurch’.
The British television writer, who is the creative mastermind behind the second instalment of the popular series starring Olivia Coleman, David Tennant and Julie Hesmondhalgh, has revealed he had to keep the last few scenes close to his chest, but found filming the finale upsetting.
Speaking about the show on ‘Good Morning Britain’ on Monday (17.04.17), he said: “We have to close off the story, close off the series. There were a few tears shed I think.”
And Chris hopes the last episode will be “really satisfying” for the audience.
He said: “I hope it’s a really satisfying end. A lot of things happen tonight.
“We’ve only got an hour to clear up everything in the whole show. There’s a lot going on but I hope it feels a satisfying, appropriate end.”
And the creator doesn’t think there will be a third season to the season.
When asked about a follow-up, he said: “I don’t think so. I think it’s the end of the story tonight.”
The last episode, which airs tonight on ITV as well as across 15 Vue cinemas across the country, will see Julie’s character Trish Winterman’s rapist revealed, and Chris has revealed he was planning to cast one actor as the culprit, but swiftly changed his mind.
He said: “I wrote episode one, draft one and I thought it was somebody, then I thought ‘oh that’s how it should resolve’, so it changed slightly.
“We had a conversation with that person during the process, but they didn’t know when they joined.
“Everyone had to join on the proviso that they didn’t know.”

Lisa Kudrow needed 400 takes

OHMYGOSSIP — Lisa Kudrow doesn’t think she was “very good” in ‘The Boss Baby’.
The 53-year-old actress – who has son Julian, 18, with her husband Michel Stern – voices the mum in the new DreamWorks animated adventure but because she had to do numerous takes for all her scenes, she isn’t convinced she did a particularly great job, though she had a lot of fun.
She said: “I did my takes about 400 times, so that tells me I wasn’t very good.
“But I really enjoyed it.
“I thought the story was very clever and funny, yet grounded in a ridiculous reality. When a baby comes into the house, they are the boss because they can’t do anything for themselves.”
Lisa can also currently be seen in wedding comedy ‘Table 19’, and she admitted the subject matter – a collection of random guests seated at a table with no connection to one another – struck a chord with her.
Asked if the simple plot was what appealed to her, she said: “That and the fact I’m always at that table. I wanted to be there at my own wedding, because you’re away from all the chaos.
“I thought it was an honour to sit there, but this film has taught me otherwise.”
However, one think Lisa thinks was an “honour” was being part of such a strong comedic ensemble in the movie.
She added to heat magazine: “But it was an honour to sit at that table with Anna Kendrick, June Squibb, Stephen Merchant and Craig Robinson. It was one of those really great ensemble pieces that don’t come around very often.”

Charlie Hunnam: 'Rapid' turnaround prevented me from doing Pacific Rim: Uprising

OHMYGOSSIP — Charlie Hunnam has blamed the “rapid” turnaround for ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ as the reason for his character not being in the movie.
The 37-year-old actor starred as the lead character Raleigh Beckett in ‘Pacific Rim’, and says the reason he couldn’t reprise his role in the upcoming sequel was because Legendary Entertainment – the studio that made the movie and was subsequently bought by Chinese company Wanda – wanted to make the movie “very rapidly”, when the star was already committed to upcoming prison movie ‘Papillon’.
He said: “There was a huge scheduling conflict. I was already really, really invested in doing ‘Papillion’.
“What happened was Legendary was sold to Wanda, which is the big Chinese corporation, and ‘Pacific Rim’, although it underperformed in other territories in the world, was an enormous success in China. All of a sudden, it became their primary focus to make this and they wanted to do it very, very rapidly … I think their schedule subsequently changed, and I might have been able to do both, but at that time, they were writing the script and they needed to know, was I in or was I out?”
Despite the scheduling crisis, Charlie insists there’s no bad blood between himself and the team at Legendary, and has thanked them for letting him out of his contract so he could focus on ‘Papillon’.
He added to DenofGeek.com: “I have great relationships with everyone at Legendary, and they were incredibly generous to me and let me out of my contract.
“I had to do the film whether I liked it or not. When I spoke to (former Legendary chairman) Thomas Tull, who is a dear friend of mine, I said, ‘Listen, man. It’s not that my heart is not in this. I’m invested in this creatively, but my heart’s going to be broken because I already was going to do this other film.’
“He was like, ‘Dude, you were going to do that other film and that’s where your heart is. I don’t want you being on set if you’re not going to be happy, so go do the other film,’ which was ludicrously generous of him. But that’s just the type of man he is.”
