Emmerdale’s Moira Barton to let son Adam take blame for murder

OHMYGOSSIP — Emmerdale’s Moira Barton will let her son Adam Thomas go to prison for murdering her arch-enemy Emma Barton – even though she has confessed to the horrific crime.
Viewers were left gripped to the edge of their seats in last night’s (14.12.17) episode after the farm girl – played by Natalie J. Robb – admitted to her on/off boyfriend Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) that she had pushed the nurse (Gillian Kearney) to her shocking death in the autumn because she had taunted her over being a bad mum.
But, although she has fessed up to the crime, her son Adam will be the one who ends up behind bars as the police believe they have enough evidence to pin the murder on him.
A source told The Sun newspaper: “This whodunnit has been going on for months but just as viewers think they’ve come to a conclusion, the rug will be pulled out form under them.
“Last night saw Moira confess, but now the police are confided they’ve got the right suspect in Adam.”
And it looks like Adam may actually go down for a crime he didn’t commit as Adam Thomas – who plays the handsome farm boy – has quit the long-running ITV soap.
The 28-year-old actor has played Adam for eight years, but has stepped down from his role as he wants to spread his wings and try his hand at something different.
A source said: “Adam’s had a great time but he’s spent eight years in the Dales and thinks the time is right.”
Adam – whose brother Ryan Thomas was formerly a star on rival soap ‘Coronation Street’ – joined the Dales in 2009, and has had several dramatic storylines since.
Most notably, his character was seen suffering a breakdown and committing arson after John Barton, the man he believed to be his father, died.
His character was also involved in a plot which had him mistakenly believe he had fathered Luca, the son of Vanessa Woodfield (played by Michelle Hardwick), after Rakesh Kotecha (Pasha Bocarie) – who is the father of Luca’s biological father Kirin (Adam Fielding) – doctored the DNA test results.

Mark Gatiss has ‘no plans’ do another series of Sherlock

OHMYGOSSIP — Mark Gatiss “has no plans” to do another series of ‘Sherlock’.
The 51-year-old screen writer teamed up with his good friend Steven Moffat back in 2010 to create the modern-day adaptation of the drama series, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the famous detective, and, although fans are desperate to have another instalment, the writing duo don’t know if they’re going to pen anymore episodes.
Asked whether ‘Sherlock’ will return, Mark said on ‘Lorraine’ on Friday (15.12.17): “We deliberately left it in a sort of happy place where we could go back. We have no plans at the moment. Steven and I are going to do ‘Dracula’. I don’t know yet [if I’ll be in it]. The part I’d like is obviously Renfield, the mad man. That’s the best part. We’ll see.”
It comes just a few months after he admitted that he and Steven were toying with the idea of bringing it to an end because it’s so hard to get the schedules of Martin Freeman (Dr. John Watson) and Benedict (Sherlock Holmes) to line up every year.
Gatiss said recently: “It’s not lack of will – it’s a nightmare to schedule. It was very, very hard to schedule the last series, because of Martin and Benedict’s availability. And Steve’s and mine.
“There is always that ‘Fawlty Towers’ principle of, ‘Let’s just leave it’. We’ve had the keys to Baker Street for a while, but one of the wonderful things is that they’re always shared. They were shared while we were making it. There’s nothing wrong with saying, ‘That was our version, somebody out there go and do their version’.”
However, it seems Gatiss and Moffat have different views as the 56-year-old television writer is adamant that there will be another instalment of ‘Sherlock’ – but it won’t be anytime soon.
He said: “We did [the last series] a year ago, just about, and I’ve been flat-out on ‘Doctor Who’ ever since. So I haven’t really thought about it. Mark [has] been doing other stuff as well, so we haven’t sat down and had a proper talk about what we would do with another series.
I assume we will. I sort of assume we’ll come back.”

Shirley Ballas would feel ‘honoured’ to return to Strictly Come Dancing

OHMYGOSSIP — Shirley Ballas would feel “honoured” if she was asked back to ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.
The 57-year-old legendary dancer was hired as the show’s head judge this year after Len Goodman – who held the position for 12 years decided to quit – and, although she’s found the competition tough at times, she’d love to reclaim her position on the panel next year.
Speaking to The Sun newspaper, she said: “I’ve had a brilliant experience. One never presumes — but I have enjoyed it. It would be an honour if one was to be asked back for such a magnificent show. It’s been life-changing. It’s beyond what I ever dreamed and expected. Thank god the ratings didn’t go down.”
Although the nation have fallen in love with her as the series has gone on, Shirley was subject to some harsh criticism in the beginning as some felt she was using technical words to speak to the celebrities and the public was finding it hard to understand.
But she said recently: “I’m quite a perfectionist. When I first came on and I had to judge the first show, it was terrifying. I take my job extremely seriously. You are totally under scrutiny. I go from week to week. I’m married to what I do. I think I did pretty good. I would probably give myself ‘seven’. In anything you do there is room for improvement.”
And, although she was hired as the head judge, the brunette star “dreads” having to judge the dance-off every week because she has the deciding vote.
She said: “That results show was incredibly hard. Having the deciding vote is the hardest part of this job and the thing I dread every week.
“They were both fantastic couples and it was so difficult to do. I was as shocked as everyone that they were in the dance-off. The fact that they were in the bottom two showed they did not have enough public votes. The judges make their decision based on the dance-off alone, not on previous performances. It is getting really tough now – it’s anyone’s to win. But if you have a favourite, make sure you vote.”

Vic and Bob revive Big Night Out for full series

OHMYGOSSIP — Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer are writing a full series of ‘Vic and Bob’s Big Night Out’ for 2018.
The comedy duo first worked together on ‘Vic Reeves Big Night Out’ in 1990, launching their successful double act which has continued for 27 years, and they will follow up the upcoming Christmas special with a full series.
Vic told The Sun newspaper: “We’re going to start writing a full series of ‘Big Night Out’ in January. We’ll spend next year on it.
“‘Vic and Bob’s Big Night Out’ is pretty much like ‘Shooting Stars’ without the guests
“TV audiences are a lot older now so if you do a bit of nostalgia, it’s always going to appeal to them.”
The original variety show parody included the famous catchphrase, “You just couldn’t let it lie.”
Vic and Bob have gone on to become pillars of British comedy, working together on other hit shows including ‘The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer’, ‘Shooting Stars’ and ‘House Of Fools’.
The new Christmas special will feature a cameo from the pair’s old friend and co-star Matt Lucas as singer Rag’n’Bone Man.
Vic – who acts under his real name is Jim Moir – has recently been appearing in ITV soap opera ‘Coronation Street’ as marketing executive Colin Callen, who hoped to take over The Kabin newsagent from Norris Cole.
He said: “I’d like to go back and do some more. They were talking about me doing some more next year.”

Debbie McGee feeling ‘washed out’ ahead of Strictly Come Dancing final

OHMYGOSSIP — Debbie McGee has felt “physically washed out” this week ahead of the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ final.
The 59-year-old star will go up against Joe McFadden, Alexandra Burke and Gemma Atkinson in a bid to win the Glitterball Trophy in this weekend’s finale, but she has been struggling and bosses are said to be hoping she will be fit for the showpiece.
She said: “On Tuesday I was like a zombie. I was brain dead and physically washed out.”
Debbie – who has been struggling with injuries throughout the series – has admitted this week has taken more out of her than any other time, and she is feeling the pressure.
She is quoted by the Daily Star newspaper as saying: “I am now more tired than I have been in any other week. The pressure is much heavier.”
Debbie – who is paired up with pro partner Giovanni Pernice – battled through a twisted back muscle to perform earlier in the series, and previously revealed she had been visiting a physiotherapist in a bid to ease the pain of her multiple injuries.
She said: “The samba really pulled the muscles over my hip bones. It actually felt like a tendon had gone over my hip bone, and when I put my weight on my left foot it kept giving way and my leg was buckling.
“I had more physio after Saturday. They gave me ice packs. I had to go back to the hotel and soak in a bath and put an ice pack on.
“I have got a few bruises.”
Despite her injury problems, Debbie – who was married to late magician Paul Daniels – is 2/1 second favourite with bookmaker William Hill to take home the Glitterball Trophy this weekend behind Joe McFadden at 4/6.
But Debbie’s odds were cut this week after punters gambled on her winning the series.
Alexandra Burke (6/1) and Gemma Atkinson (14/1) are third and fourth favourites.

Binky Felstead found living with boyfriend a huge ‘shock’

OHMYGOSSIP — Binky Felstead found living with Josh ‘JP’ Patterson more of a “shock” than having a baby.
The former ‘Made in Chelsea’ star reconciled with her former boyfriend during her pregnancy and though she feels “lucky” to have him around for her and six-month-old daughter India, she admitted the 28-year-old hunk has some bad habits.
Asked if a proposal could be on the cards, she said: “We’re not thinking about that. I’m just getting used to him living with me!
“He’s really messy. Living with him was more of a shock than having a baby.
“But he’s a great father and I’m lucky to have him.”
Though Binky wants to have more children in the future, it’s not in her plans just yet.
She told new! magazine: “We haven’t really thought about it, were just dealing with the first one.
“Obviously I’d like a bigger family in the future but India’s perfect.”
The couple are looking forward to their first Christmas as parents, but they still haven’t made any plans beyond finding a novelty outfit for India.
Binky said: “We have no idea what we’re doing yet and of course, she’ll have no idea what’s going on, but she’ll look cute in her festive elf hat.”
Meanwhile, though the brunette beauty quit the E4 programme to focus on her daughter, she hasn’t ruled out a return in the future.
She said: “It was my family for six years and I’m not losing touch with the show. I wouldn’t be here without them. I tune in occasionally.
“For the moment I’m happy being a mummy but I’m not ruling it out of my life forever and of course I’ll go back and do the odd cameo.”

Disney to buy 21st Century Fox for $52.4 billion

OHMYGOSSIP — Disney is buying 21st Century Fox for $52.4 billion.
The Walt Disney Company confirmed on Thursday (14.12.17) that they have agreed an all-stock acquisition deal for the corporation, as well as obtaining other assets from media conglomerate Rupert Murdoch’s empire, whilst taking on $13.7 billion of Fox’s credit insured debt.
A key part of the deal is that Disney’s CEO and chairman Bob Iger has had his contract extended for 24 months.
The 66-year-old executive – who was eventually meant to complete his run heading up the entertainment group in 2019 – said: “The acquisition of this stellar collection of businesses from 21st Century Fox reflects the increasing consumer demand for a rich diversity of entertainment experiences that are more compelling, accessible and convenient than ever before.
“We’re honored and grateful that Rupert Murdoch has entrusted us with the future of businesses he spent a lifetime building, and we’re excited about this extraordinary opportunity to significantly increase our portfolio of well-loved franchises and branded content to greatly enhance our growing direct-to-consumer offerings. The deal will also substantially expand our international reach, allowing us to offer world-class storytelling and innovative distribution platforms to more consumers in key markets around the world.”
The question on everyone’s lips is what will happen to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Fox owned the rights to comic book superheroes such as Deadpool, the Fantastic Four and X-Men.
Phase three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will come to an end in May 2019, concluding with the fourth ‘Avengers’ movie, which is yet untitled.
In 2009, Disney bought 5,000 of Marvel’s characters in a deal worth $4 billion.
‘Deadpool 2’, ‘Gambit’, ‘Dark Phoenix’, ‘Multiple Man’, ‘New Mutants’ and ‘X-Force’ are currently in the works or in post-production from Marvel.
With the new deal going through, it’s not yet known how Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will work on.
Media mogul Murdoch, 86, strongly believes that under Iger’s guise Disney’s acquisition of Fox will make it “one of the greatest companies in the world”.
He said: “We are extremely proud of all that we have built at 21st Century Fox, and I firmly believe that this combination with Disney will unlock even more value for shareholders as the new Disney continues to set the pace in what is an exciting and dynamic industry.
“Furthermore, I’m convinced that this combination, under Bob Iger’s leadership, will be one of the greatest companies in the world. I’m grateful and encouraged that Bob has agreed to stay on, and is committed to succeeding with a combined team that is second to none.”

Rebel Wilson will work with Pitch Perfect scribe Kay Cannon again

OHMYGOSSIP — Rebel Wilson is confident she will work with ‘Pitch Perfect’ scribe Kay Cannon again.
The 37-year-old actress has starred as Patricia ‘Fat Amy’ Hobart in the hit accapella musical trilogy, and although the franchise is coming to an end after the third movie, Wilson would never pass on the opportunity to work with the screenwriter again.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s world premiere in Hollywood on Tuesday (12.12.17), Wilson said: “I’m sure I’ll work with Kay again. She’s so brilliant. And now she’s directing her own movies. I’m sure our paths will cross again. She actually sent me the original ‘Pitch Perfect’ script on Facebook after seeing some of my outtakes from ‘Bridesmaids’. That’s how I was the first person cast.”
Cannon admits it is “really tough” and “hard” to say goodbye to everyone involved now the franchise has ended.
She said: “It’s really tough. It’s hard. And I haven’t even seen the movie yet. I purposely did that. It’s really hard for me to say goodbye so I wanted to see it with everybody.”
The third film follows the Bellas singing group who find themselves split apart and discovering there aren’t many job prospects for people with their talents.
But when they get the chance to reunite for an overseas USO tour, the group come together to make some music.
The movie also stars Elizabeth Banks, Hailee Steinfeld, Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow and Anna Camp.
And Banks, 43, said making these films centred on women is “really empowering” and she is very proud of the legacy of the franchise.
She said: “Making a movie that has a poster with all these women on it that are so diverse and interesting is really empowering. In this moment in Hollywood I’m really proud of these movies. They prove women love movies and can star in movies. I’ll miss that. I’m really, really proud of the legacy Pitch Perfect has created.”

Karen Gillan had to dodge centipedes while filming Jumanji

OHMYGOSSIP — Karen Gillan had to constantly dodge falling centipedes while filming ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’.
The 30-year-old actress stars as Ruby Roundhouse in the sequel to the 1995 Robin Williams’ classic and admitted the worst part of filming in the Hawaiian jungle was the carnivorous arthropods which would drop from the trees.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar magazine, Gillan said: “It was so much rehearsal. I was training every single day: martial arts, basic punching and kicking and then learning how to dance, which was totally foreign to me. But the worst part was the centipedes in the jungle. They would fall from trees at any given moment so you were never safe. It was horrible. I had to up my calorie intake. It was never about losing weight, it was about gaining muscle and becoming stronger, which I think was really cool actually. It felt good.”
Last year, when her character was unveiled wearing impractical short-shorts and a crop top compared to her fully clothed male co-stars it caused a Twitter storm amongst fans, but Gillan insists in the context of the fantasy film her sexy outfit makes perfect sense.
The former ‘Doctor Who’ star said: “To be honest, I do not see that whole uproar as a negative thing at all. I think that everybody had a fair point, which is that when you look at that picture out of context it’s absurd. But that is what we’re highlighting. It was a trope in Nineties video games to turn the female characters into ridiculous male fantasies. And they are scantily clad. To have people talk about it in that way is a really good conversation to be having and I’m glad it’s at the forefront of people’s discussions.”
Gillan stars alongside Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Nick Jonas and Jack Black in the new movie by Jake Kasdan.

Rian Johnson wants a female director to helm a Star Wars movie

OHMYGOSSIP — Rian Johnson thinks it’s time a female director helmed a ‘Star Wars’ movie.
The 43-year-old filmmaker took control of the eighth instalment of the hit sci-fi franchise, ‘The Last Jedi’, and was recently announced to be creating a new trilogy outside of the current Skywalker saga.
So far in the franchise’s history, all eight films – including the two spin-offs ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ and the Han Solo standalone movie – have been directed by white male filmmakers, but Johnson admitted it’s time for a woman or a person of colour to tell a story in a galaxy far, far away.
Speaking at the European press conference at the Corinthia Hotel in London on Wednesday (13.12.17), Johnson said: “Hell yes it’s time!
“There are so many incredibly talented female directors and directors of colour out there and so many I would love to see play in this universe. Yes please! I would love it to happen.”
‘The Last Jedi’ features a very diverse cast – one of the most eclectic in the franchise’s entire history – and Johnson admits “it felt right” having so many different actors of varying ethnicity.
The big screen master – who is in a long-term relationship with film writer Karina Longworth – said: “It felt right to have a diverse cast. I wanted ‘Star Wars’ to reflect on the world around us, all movies are starting to do it as well.”
The eighth movie sees the return of ‘Star Wars’ legends Mark Hamill as Jedi Master Luke Skywalker and Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa – and marks her last outing after she tragically passed away last December aged 60.
Other returning stars include John Boyega (Finn), Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Domhnall Gleeson (General Lux) and Andy Serkis (Snoke).
And Hamill, 66, admitted he was in “awe” of the entire cast but joked he wouldn’t want to work with Ridley, 25, again.
He quipped: “I’m in awe of every member of cast and, besides Daisy, I hope to work with them all again!”

Oscar Isaac: Happy to be alive in Star Wars

OHMYGOSSIP — Oscar Isaac is very happy Poe Dameron wasn’t killed off in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.
The 38-year-old actor stars as the Resistance X-wing fighter pilot and one of the most trusted operatives for General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), and he was originally supposed to have met a grisly end in the 2015 movie.
However, the character survived being tortured by First Order enforcer Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Isaac is back in the role in Rian Johnson’s new movie ‘The Last Jedi’ and he admits it was really exciting to get to see his character develop.
During the European press conference on Wednesday (13.12.17) at the Corinthia Hotel in London, Isaac said: “It’s definitely good to be alive. I was really excited to see what Rian created for Poe, the conflict that he has in a very brutal way. He took away the one thing he was good at which was blowing things up and so he had to deal with being grounded and I was really fortunate to have scenes with Laura (Dern) and it did feel like it was an intimate set. You know we were all sort of walking around in our jeans and T-shirts rehearsing it and talking about different motivations.”
As well as appearing with Dern – who plays Resistance officer, Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo – Isaac also got plenty of scenes with the late Fisher making her final appearance as Leia and he very much enjoyed getting to work closely with the ‘Star Wars’ legend.
He said: “It was great to be able to take our time with scenes in such a huge movie and obviously to have scenes with Carrie was great.”

Andy Serkis compares Snoke to the Wizard of Oz

OHMYGOSSIP — Andy Serkis says his ‘Star Wars’ character Supreme Leader Snoke is like the Wizard of Oz.
The 53-year-old actor first starred as the leader of the First Order in 2015’s ‘The Force Awakens’ and has reprised his role in the much-anticipated eighth installment ‘The Last Jedi’, helmed by Rian Johnson.
Although he has been tight-lipped on who his character really is, the British star has described him as having some similarities to the mysterious character in the 1939 movie ‘The Wizard of Oz’ starring Judy Garland, who rules the Land of Oz with smoke and mirrors.
Speaking at the European press conference for the sci-fi film at the Corinthia Hotel in London on Wednesday (13.12.17), Serkis said: “It was a real challenge I had such a brilliant time working with Rian and the way he decided to take the character in this. But trying to, with all characters that are representing evil or so called evil, it’s very important to try and humanize them in some way. And there’s a vulnerability that we try to approach with Snoke which is brought out of fear actually and I think fear that there is, of course the First Order is in a pretty bad state ruled by General Hux and a conflicted Kylo Ren. But the thing is about Snoke is there’s this public hologram sort of at 5am in the morning. A hologram appearance that he does to scare people. He’s like the Wizard of Oz. Behind the curtains he’s this frail creature who is fearful of a very powerful feminine energy coming to take him down. We always try and find a spark of humanity in that.”
The feminine energy Snoke is fearful of is the Force sensitive Rey (Daisy Ridley) who successfully finds Jedi Master Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) at the end of ‘The Force Awakens’.

Kevin Hart to star in On the Run

OHMYGOSSIP — Kevin Hart is to star in action-comedy ‘On the Run’.
The 38-year-old star will portray a hitman in the forthcoming film whose assignment doesn’t go to plan when his target isn’t who he thinks it is going to be.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hart will also co-produce the motion picture alongside Will Packer, and Kristen Lowe will oversee the production.
Aeysha Carr is set to pen the script for the movie.
It’s not the first time Hart and Packer have teamed up together after the comedian appeared in 2014 action-comedy ‘Ride Along’ in 2014, in which he appeared alongside Ice Cube.
Packer co-produced the project with the rapper, Matt Alvarez and Larry Brezner.
What’s more, Hart and Packer are due to team up once again in forthcoming film ‘Night School’, which is due to be released in 2018.
Hart will play main character Teddy Walker in the movie, and also co-produce alongside Packer.
The actor will next be seen in ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’, a remake of the 2015 fantasy adventure film.
Hart stars as zoologist Franklin “Moose” Finbar in the motion picture alongside a star-studded cast, including Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan and Nick Jonas.
The movie – directed by Jake Kasdan – sees four teenagers get drawn into the game by becoming the adult avatars they chose.
The original motion picture starred the late, great Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt and Kristen Dunst.

Domhnall Gleeson almost snubbed Star Wars role

OHMYGOSSIP — Domhnall Gleeson almost turned down his role in ‘Star Wars’.
The 34-year-old actor has just returned for his second outing in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ as General Hux – one of the most notorious villains in the space opera franchise – but he has admitted he was in two minds about accepting the part when he was first approached in 2015 because of the pitfalls of fame he experienced after he portrayed Bill Weasley in the ‘Harry Potter’ movies.
Speaking on ‘The One Show’ last night (13.12.17), he said: “I think everybody is [unsure], really. It’s not like I didn’t want to be in it. I wanted to do the job, but I was a little bit concerned about the impact it would have on my life.
“I’d already been in ‘Harry Potter’ a tiny bit, right at the end of that, and things changed a little bit in terms of being out and about.
“So, I was a little bit reticent [for ‘The Force Awakens’], but then I read it and I was really good. I just decided I didn’t care anymore.”
Gleeson’s comments come just days after Daisy Ridley – who plays Rey in the franchise – admitted she was nervous for ‘The Last Jedi’ because she didn’t have close pal John Boyega – who played Finn in ‘The Force Awakens’ – on set with her.
She said recently: “I was nervous going in, because John and I were no longer together, and John is my peanut. So I think more than anything, [I learned] to put your trust in those around you and it’ll all turn out pretty well. Putting my trust in Mark and Rian [Johnson, the movie’s director] mainly, was wonderful.”
The 25-year-old actress also admitted that she felt “more nervous” going into her second ‘Star Wars’ venture than she did in 2015, because she wasn’t sure how to replicate her past performance.
Asked if she found it any easier the second time around, she said: “I actually felt more nervous because I didn’t know what I was doing the first time around, and you kind of think, how am I supposed to do something again when I didn’t know what I did the first time? And I think because people responded so well to John and I together that was a big thing too, thinking how are people going to respond when we’re not together. So it was nerve-wracking. But again, as relationships grow and you start to get comfortable, it settles into a wonderful six months.”

Strictly Come Dancing final routines revealed

OHMYGOSSIP — The ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ finalists will be dancing three different routines on Saturday night (16.12.17).
The finale of the BBC One ballroom competition has had a slight shake-up this year, which will see all four competitors and their professional dance partners – Alexandra Burke and Gorka Marquez, Joe McFadden and Katya Jones, Debbie McGee and Giovanni Pernice, as well as Gemma Atkinson and Aljaž Škorjanec – perform the judges’ favourite dance from the entire series, as well as a showdance, and their own favourite number from the fifteenth season, although the latter will only be unveiled on the night of the finale.

Reece Shearsmith: League of Gentlemen wouldn’t get made now

OHMYGOSSIP — Reece Shearsmith doesn’t think ‘The League of Gentlemen’ would be commissioned today.
The 48-year-old actor-and-comedian created the hit BBC TV and radio show along with Steve Pemberton, Mark Gatiss and Jeremy Dyson and the cult comedy series will return to BBC Two for the first time since 2002 for three special episodes marking its 20-year anniversary
Reece believes the humour in the show – which began in 1997 on the airwaves – has a “question mark” all over it and is sure it would never get the green light these days with the spectre of political correctness hanging over the entertainment business.
Speaking to The I Paper, Reece said: “There’s a question mark over all of it, if you get into the grey areas of everyone’s particular taste. It’s hard now to have a singular voice … to write a drama without having it go through a process which tries to cater to everyone and ultimately caters for no one.”
The ‘League of Gentlemen’ originally aired on BBC Radio 4 before moving to television on BBC Two.
The BAFTA-winning programme is based around the strange residents of the fictional Pennines town of Royston Vasey and ran for three series, each featuring six episodes, from 1999 to 2002, and was followed by a 2005 film.
Among the characters were transsexual taxi driver Babs – who has a gruff voice and a hairy chest – murderous local shop owners and married brother and sister Edward and Tubbs and depressed plastic mouldings salesman Geoff Tipps.
Most of the female comic creations were portrayed by Reece, Steve and Mark in drag but the trio never cross-dressed for laughs.
He said: “We were a three-man troupe [with Jeremy writing] and we just played all the parts. We didn’t try to do it like drag. I play Stella like a real northern woman. The funny thing isn’t that there is a man dressed as a woman – that’s not the joke. We always tried to imbue them with as much truth as possible.”
‘The League of Gentlemen’ returns to TV screens on BBC Two from next Monday (18.12.17) at 10pm.
