Cherylee Houston wants TV to reflect audiences

OHMYGOSSIP — Cherylee Houston believes high streets will become “more inclusive” when more disabled people are represented on TV.
The ‘Coronation Street’ star – who plays Izzy Armstrong on the ITV soap – recently launched a new networking initiative for disabled performers, and now the actress wants to encourage television companies to be diverse and represent their audiences better.
She told ITV news: “People with disabilities only stopped being locked up, you know, I would be in a home in the 80s.
“Then in the 90s we got the right to travel and then 2000 we got the right to go to university, so we’re just a bit further behind than everybody else.
“The more we’re on television the more ramps will appear on the high-street and the more inclusive everything else will become.”
This news comes as Cherylee recently joined forces with her former co-star Melissa Johns, who played Imogen Pascoe on the cobbles, to set up networking event Disabled Artist Network Community (DANC) to help change the way the industry “embraces” disabled artists and performers.
Cherylee, 44, said: “This industry can change the way we’re treated in society.
“So if we can change the way this industry embraces us … then people won’t have to face the blocks we faced.”
Melissa added: “We can’t have a ‘them and us’ situation anymore. Because it’s not working.
“That’s why we created DANC, because we want this to be an integration of everyone knowing that it’s everyone’s responsibility.
“It can’t keep falling on us as artists with disabilities.”
The pair are hoping to bring about change by opening up conversations with the likes of TV companies, filmmakers, arts venues and music producers.
She recently said: “The more of us stand together, the more of a difference we can make.
“It’s about that responsibility of putting back into your career for the people of the future for their careers, so people don’t have to keep facing the blocks we faced.”
Melissa added: “You grow up not seeing people with disabilities on screen or on stages, and when you do say to somebody, ‘I want to be an actor’ or ‘I want to be a dancer’ or ‘I want to be something in this industry’ you do get funny looks.
“You do get funny looks anyway when you say you want to be in this industry, which is fair enough.
“When you have a disability, suddenly it’s like ‘Ooh,’ and you get this sympathetic look.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Dame Darcey Bussell has stepped down from ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.
The 49-year-old retired ballerina has quit the BBC One Latin and ballroom show after seven series, but insisted she isn’t departing the programme due to “any upset or disagreement” and simply wants to focus on her “many other commitments in dance”.
Darcey – who became a full-time judge on the show’s 10th series in 2012 – said in a statement: “It has been a complete privilege for me to be part of ‘Strictly’, working with such a talented team.
“I have enjoyed every minute of my time and will miss everyone from my fellow judges, the presenters, the dancers, the musicians, the entire back stage team, and especially the viewers of the show, who have been so supportive.
“I am not leaving because of any upset or disagreement at all, I am just stepping away to give more focus to my many other commitments in dance, after seven truly wonderful years that I can’t imagine having gone any better.”
While Darcey will not be a judge for ‘Strictly’ 2019, she hopes to be asked back on the show at some point.
She said: “I know I will miss being part of this unique show and the fact that it celebrates dance is something I am so passionate about. I hope that I may be very lucky to be asked back again one day.”
Charlotte Moore, director of BBC content, said: “It has been an absolute honour to have Darcey, a national treasure and British dance icon, bring her passion for dance and her graceful presence to the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ judging panel for seven consecutive years.
“She will be thoroughly missed by us all and will of course remain part of the ‘Strictly’ family in the future.”

Martin Compston warns fans about ‘fake’ Instagram account

OHMYGOSSIP — Martin Compston has solved a real-life mystery after discovering someone is posing as him on a “fake” Instagram account.
The 34-year-old actor is used to solving crimes as DS Steve Arnott in the BBC police corruption drama ‘Line of Duty’, and now off-screen he has taken to Twitter to warn his followers that someone is using an Instagram profile to message “a lot of [his] female followers for details”.
He tweeted: “Hey troops this stuff is usually harmless but this fake account apparently been messaging a lot of my female followers for details. Obviously not me thanks for people getting in touch to give me a heads up (sic)”
Martin is known for his straight-laced detective alter-ego, but he previously admitted it was quite hard to nail his London accent for the popular BBC One series, because he isn’t very good at them.
He said: “I’m not [very good at accents] … but that makes me work my a**e off to do them.”
And he always knows when he has “nailed” an accent because he wakes up talking in his well-practised voice, and even sometimes dreams about it.
He added: “I’ve always had a good work ethic. I get so over-prepared so I’ve got no excuses on the day. You know you’ve nailed it when you wake up in the morning and you’re talking to yourself in the accent.
“Your mind just goes to it. You have dreams in it, for sure, because you’re doing it that much.”

Elton John: Bodyguard was very sexy series

OHMYGOSSIP — Sir Elton John thought ‘Bodyguard’ was a “very sexy series” and knew Richard Madden would get his kit off on the show.
The 72-year-old singer was a huge fan of the BBC thriller, which starred Richard as PS David Budd, a protection officer in charge of looking after Keeley Hawes’ home secretary character Julia Montague, and he predicted from the start that the pair would get jiggy with it.
While interviewing Richard for Interview Magazine, Elton said: “It was a very sexy series. As soon as I saw the first episode, I just knew you were going to fuck the home secretary.
“I said to David [Furnish, Elton’s husband], ‘He’s absolutely going to f**k her.’ ”
At one point, Elton binge-watched three hours of ‘Bodyguard’ in one night because he was desperate to finish the series before going away.
He added: “When I first started watching it, I watched an episode a night, and then I was going away for Christmas and thought, ‘I can’t not see the whole thing.’
“So I watched three hours. It was a riveting series that really catapulted you into another kind of stratosphere.”
When asked by Elton if there was anything Richard would’ve changed about the series, he replied: “Oh, God, every day we had arguments. I f***ing hate compromise. Compromise is a word I cannot stand.”
The ‘Game of Thrones’ star admitted he’s “still overwhelmed” by the success of the show, saying it was a “huge part” of his life.
He said: “I’m still overwhelmed, and also hugely grateful for it.
“Often, you work so hard on things, and then it comes out and people go, ‘Yeah, all right.” And you go, ‘F**k, doing that nearly killed me. It took a huge part of my life out of me’.”
Richard previously admitted stripping off for the show left him with fears he was projecting an “unrealistic body image”.
He previously said: “We’re projecting a very unrealistic body image. I find myself with actor friends – after we’ve done a kind of barely eating, working-out-twice-a-day, no-carbing thing for these scenes – looking at each other going: ‘We’re just feeding this same s**t that we’re against.’
“I’ve done numerous jobs where you’re told to lose weight and get to the gym. It doesn’t just happen to women, it happens to men all the time as well.”

Emma Barton injury disrupts London Marathon training

OHMYGOSSIP — Emma Barton is determined to run the London Marathon – despite being told to rest for “a few weeks” after she developed “runner’s knee”.
The ‘EastEnders’ actress insists she will still take part in the 26.2-mile race on April 28 as part of a running team Barbara’s Revolutionaries for former co-star Dame Barbara Windsor – who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2014 – even if she can only walk it.
She said: “I developed ‘runner’s knee’ in February. The physio has told me to rest it for a few weeks, so it’s not great timing.
“It won’t stop me, though. I’ve said to the team that’ll be doing this whatever way I can – jogging, walking, all bandaged up.
“But the rest of the team are smashing it.”
Emma will run alongside several of her co-stars, including Natalie Cassidy (Sonia Fowler), Jake Wood (Max Branning), and Adam Woodyatt (Ian Beale) as part of Barbara’s team, and they are hoping to continue running together after the spectacle.
She said: “We’ve all said we want to continue running after this.”
And the 41-year-old actress – who plays Honey Mitchell on the BBC One soap – admits the team spirit among the Barbara’s Revolutionaries members is high.
She added to Inside Soap magazine: “We’re encouraging each other all the time, huddling together at work and swapping notes on which socks we’re wearing, what drinks we’re taking out on training, what music we’re listening to.
“We really carry each other along.”
Emma isn’t the only person who has taken a rest from training of late.
Adam recently admitted he had to put off his running practice to do his tax return.
Speaking in January, he said: “I’m looking forward to the training. I should’ve started this week but I had to do the VAT.
“It will start, I promise.
“I’m starting soon … I’ve done it before, I’m going to stick to the same schedule.
“I got round once, I really enjoyed it. I know what I need to do to get through the day. Training!”

The ‘Love Island’ winner – who is the daughter of actor Danny Dyer and Joanne Mas – lets her mum remove hair from her private area because her mother “thinks she can do it better than anyone else”.
Writing in her book ‘What Would Dani Do?’, she said: “No part of my body is sacred with my mum. She even insists on waxing my nunnie for me.
“She seems to think she can do it better than anyone else.
“I went back home the other night for some tea and she ended up making me get on all fours while she did it in the lounge. It really hurt.
“I was having to take sips of wine to numb the pain while my poor sister Sunnie was trying to watch TV.”
Dani – who also has five-year-old brother Arty – shot to fame this summer when she won ‘Love Island’ with then-boyfriend Jack Fincham, but they recently split.
In a statement on Instagram, Jack wrote: “There is no easy way to say this and it isn’t going to be an easy time but me and Dani are not in a relationship anymore.

Letitia Dean films 2,000th EastEnders episode

OHMYGOSSIP — Letitia Dean was shocked to find out she has filmed her 2,000th ‘EastEnders’ episode – and admitted she “couldn’t have done it without” Steve McFadden.
The 51-year-old actress has played Sharon Mitchell on the BBC One soap on and off since 1985, so the show’s bosses interrupted filming to pay tribute to her services to the programme and present her with a bouquet of flowers.
John Sen, EastEnders’ executive producer, told Letitia: “I would like to say congratulations to a wonderful actress, a fantastic company member, and a national icon who just completed her 2,000th episode.”
A surprised Letitia said: “No! Thank you.”
She then turned to Steve – who has played Phil Mitchell since 1990 – and said: “I couldn’t have done it without you, Steve.”
He replied: “She’s right. You’re right.”
EastEnders’ senior exec producer Kate Oates presented Letitia with the bouquet and praised her “amazing achievement”.
Speaking in a behind-the-scenes video posted on the ‘EastEnders’ Twitter account, she said: “It’s an amazing achievement by anyone’s standards.”
An accompanying message on the soap’s Twitter read: “This week the legend that is Letitia Dean aka Sharon Mitchell filmed her 2000th episode of #EastEnders!
“Now that’s an occasion to be marked. Congratulations Letitia.”
Letitia joined ‘EastEnders’ in 1985 after starring as Lucina Oliver in ‘Grange Hill’ and in one episode of now-defunct soap ‘Brookside’.

Shirley tweeted: “We’ve had the most laughs and fun times on the show. Today is certainly the end of an era. Thank you for holding my hand all the way and being such an incredible friend.
“You were my rock when I was new to the show and have always been so kind. I for one will dearly miss my partner in crime and our girly chats. It just won’t be the same without you!”
Fellow judge Bruno Tonioli also paid tribute to his friend, describing Darcey as a “true national treasure”.
He shared a photo of a rose and wrote: “My darling @DarceyOfficial I will miss you so much your knowledge, beauty, talent, charm and elegance makes you a true national treasure. I will treasure all the time we spend together on and off screen.”

Her fellow host, Tess Daly, and the other member of the judging panel, Craig Revel Horwood, have yet to comment on the news.

Daniel Dae Kim grateful Hellboy role was recast

OHMYGOSSIP — Daniel Dae Kim is “grateful” his ‘Hellboy’ role was recast.
The former ‘Lost’ star signed up to play Japanese-American agent Ben Daimio after producers faced a backlash for ‘whitewashing’ the comic book character by casting Ed Skrein in the role and the actor eventually vacated the role.
And Daniel – who joined the project a month after Ed stepped down – is pleased director Neil Marshall and producers on the movie listened to the criticism and “did the right thing”.
He told The Hollywood Reporter: “It’s an important thing to take action, and what Neil and the producers did was take action.
“I am a direct beneficiary of that, but I think all of us benefit by having a role that’s intended for an Asian being played by an Asian. So I’m grateful for him and the producers, who did the right thing, ultimately.”
The movie sees black actress Sasha Lane play Alice Monaghan, a character depicted as white and red-headed in the comic books, and Daniel believes the ‘Hellboy’ film is set in a time and place where “anything is possible”.
He said: “I think in [this] universe anything is possible — you can be white, you can be a demon, you could be black, you could be Asian, you could be Latinx, anything.
“And anytime that you have something that broadens our perceptions of what could be, it changes possibilities and the messages of that possibility. ”
When Ed quit the film, he issued a statement explaining the issue of representing ethnic diversity was “very important” to him and Daniel admitted he had a lot of respect for the actor for his “passionate” words and sought him out to tell him so.
He said: “I had been aware of the controversy because it had been all over social media for a couple of weeks. This was before I even heard from my agents that the producers were interested in me. It was something that I wasn’t going into blindly.
“Even before I had any affiliation with the project, I just remember how much respect I had for what Ed did. His statement was so well-written and so passionate that the cynical part of me thought that it must be his publicist writing it. It was that moving to me.
“So, one of the things I did when I got the job was I sought him out, because we were shooting in London where he was at the time. I wanted to personally thank him for that statement.
“Once I met him, I found out firsthand that it was him who wrote the entire thing and that he meant every word of it. So, I was even more moved by that gesture as a result.”

Bobby Davro ‘knocked to ground and kicked’ during lunchtime row

OHMYGOSSIP — Bobby Davro claims he was knocked to the ground and kicked in the stomach after a business lunch.
The 60-year-old comedian’s ex-wife Trudi Jameson had arrived to pick him up from the Ivy Brasserie in Cobham, Surrey, on Monday (08.04.19) when she became embroiled in a war of words with another woman, which led to a guy getting involved.
Bobby claims he attempted to trip up the “very aggressive character” because he was worried he would be on the wrong end of a headbutt, but says the guy “knocked him to the ground” and then whacked him in the stomach.
He told The Sun newspaper: “The two women bumped into each other and were having words when this very aggressive character took things way too far and we ended up pushing and shoving.
“I tried to trip him up because I thought he was about to headbutt me but he managed to knock me down and kicked me in the stomach.
“I was winded. It was a dangerous, cowardly thing to do and my ex panicked and called the police – it was ridiculous.”
Bobby – who has three kids with Trudi – “cannot believe” he got caught up in the row.
The actor – who previously played Vinnie Monks in ‘EastEnders’ from 2007 to 2008 – added: “I have no idea why it all blew up.
“His missus and my ex used to be friends but clearly don’t get on now.
“I only have a relationship with my ex-wife for the sake of my kids and still can’t believe I got caught up in one her rows.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Haiesha Mistry “couldn’t stop crying” as Lauren McQueen filmed her final ‘Hollyoaks’ scene.
The 25-year-old actress – who plays Yasmine Maalik in the Channel 4 soap – has praised the 22-year-old star, who bowed out of the show in last night’s (10.04.19) E4 episode when her character Lily McQueen died of sepsis, as a “talented soul” following her ‘Oaks’ exit.
Sharing a picture of herself, Lauren and Ruby O’Donnell (Peri Lomax) on Twitter, she wrote: “I know we look emotional here cos we couldn’t stop crying..This was our last day filming a Lily, Yazz & Peri scene & Lauren’s last scene on @Hollyoaks
@Lauren_McQueen it has been a blessing to work with you. You are such a beautiful talented soul and a true friend (sic)”
Ross Adams (Scott Drinkwell) was also emotional as he watched Lauren’s final scenes.
He wrote: “I am SOBBING at tonight’s E4 @Hollyoaks. Outstanding performances from my lovely on-screen family. @Lauren_McQueen – you, my girl, are an absolute star. Keep shining bright. Miss you lots. X (sic)”
After Lily bowed out of the Hollyoaks village, Lauren thanked the soap for handing her such an important sepsis plot as her last storyline.
She wrote on Instagram: “Lily McQueen will be forever in my heart! Thank you so so much for everyone’s support & messages on my last episode. I feel so lucky to have been apart of @hollyoaksofficial I love that they aren’t afraid to confront challenging issues like Lily’s self harm & sepsis. They tackled it beautifully and I can’t thank them enough for nominating me for Best Actress at this year’s @thebritishsoapawards Here’s a few pics with some of the best people I worked with on my very last scenes and our amazing director Patrick Harkins! RIP #lilymcqueen (sic)”
Earlier this month, Lauren admitted she was “really shocked” to find out she was being killed off in ‘Hollyoaks’.
She said: “I was really shocked, to be honest.
“Lily’s been through so much, and everyone just wants her to have a happy ending. That would have been the easy way to go out of the show, though – I knew this story would be challenging for me, and I wanted to do it justice.
“I’ve got a friend who has recovered from sepsis twice, so she really helped me to understand how it affected her, and gave me a detailed response of how she felt at the time.
“That really helped with the physical side of it”.

Ashley Taylor Dawson punched by son after Hollyoaks kiss

OHMYGOSSIP — Ashley Taylor Dawson’s five-year-old son punched him after seeing him kiss Sarah Jayne Dunn on ‘Hollyoaks’.
The 37-year-old actor’s character Darren Osborne rocked the village when he had an affair with Sarah’s alter-ego Mandy Morgan, and his kid Mason was so shocked to see him smooching another woman, despite Ashley being in character, he thumped his father.
Ashley – who also has sons Buddy, eight, and two-year-old Harley with partner Karen McKay – said: “One day I came in, and the two older ones were watching ‘Hollyoaks’.
“It was like slow motion – their mouths just dropped.
“I looked at the screen, and Darren was kissing Mandy – they’ve not seen me kiss another woman before. The little one ran up and punched me.”
While Ashley is used to having kids of his own, he is currently filming with a newborn on ‘Hollyoaks’ after Mandy gave birth to a son, who may be Darren’s or could even be her husband Luke Morgan’s (Gary Lucy), and the actor admits he is trying to get through the days without the baby’s cries “ruining” any scenes.
He said: “It’s always a breath of fresh air – but you’re going through the day hoping to God it doesn’t start crying and ruin the scene.
“Right now we have a very cute baby who doesn’t know what’s going on.
“We just coo over him and it’s lovely.”
Darren and Mandy were already told the little one would have spina bifida, and Ashley and Sarah have met up with some mums going through similar situations to do the plot justice.
He added to Inside Soap magazine: “We met up with some mothers who all had completely different stories to tell.
“A lot of them were advised to go down the termination route, but now three or four years down the line they have these wonderful children who are walking and talking.
“Everything they were told their kids wouldn’t be able to do, they can.
“That’s why this is just such a fantastic story to be part of.”

O. T. Fagbenle to join Black Widow movie

OHMYGOSSIP — O. T. Fagbenle is set to join the cast of the ‘Black Widow’ movie.
The 38-year-old actor has reportedly landed a leading role in Scarlett Johansson’s standalone Marvel movie, although it remains under wraps who the ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ star will play.
There are few details known about the film as-yet, but it will focus on Scarlett’s S.H.I.E.L.D. spy character Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, an alter ego she has portrayed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2010 when she made her debut in ‘Iron Man 2’.
Cate Shortland is set to direct the motion picture, Kevin Feige will produce and Jac Shaeffer will pen the script.
This news comes after it was reported ‘The Favourite’ star Rachel Weisz and ‘Stranger Things’ actor David Harbour were reported to be in talks to star in the blockbuster alongside ‘Little Women’ actress Florence Pugh.
Emma Watson has also been linked to the movie, with her potential part recently described as a “kick-ass female [James] Bond”.
Scarlett has high hopes for her solo story, and believes Feige can help to create a “really ground-breaking” movie.
She said: “The only way to do it would be if it were something that we’ve never seen before that was really ground-breaking and incredibly bad ass. I think if anyone could make that happen my boss Kevin Feige could. He’s a visionary.”
She also believes there is plenty of scope to develop a compelling storyline because of her character’s traumatic past.
The ‘Lucy’ star recently said: “I think it could be something really special. There’s a lot of room there. The character has a tortured past, she’s had to make a lot of difficult decisions. She has a lot of trauma. She’s got issues. There’s room to work them all out.”
