Simon Cowell ‘in talks with Netflix to launch new talent show’ in quest to find next One Direction

OHMYGOSSIP — Simon Cowell is said to be in talks with Netflix about a new talent show, as he aims to find the next One Direction.
The 64-year-old entertainment mogul has taken plenty of acts under his wing and turned them into superstars, like the beloved boy band, who shot to fame on ‘The X Factor’ in 2010.
Now, Simon is attempting to make a new talent programme with the streamer, alongside the production company Box To Box Films, who are behind ‘Formula 1: Drive To Survive’.
A source told The Sun newspaper: “Simon is preparing to sign a huge deal with Netflix to find the world’s next biggest boy band.
“He is working with the team behind ‘Drive To Survive’ on the show and wanted to get it on a streamer because it fits the audience better.
“Simon knew ‘The X Factor’ had grown tired so he wanted to do something that looked completely fresh and new.
“He is renowned for spotting talent and One Direction’s success came off the back of him putting them together. Simon wants to replicate this and find a group who can reach the heights One Direction did.
“Filming for the show has already started in the UK and he is so excited about what’s to come.”
The show has been dubbed “X Factor 2.0”.
An insider told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “Previously Simon has looked to ITV for his projects, but he now feels global streaming platforms are the way forward. He wants to find the next 1D and use one of these platforms and launch them to the world.
“This is effectively ‘X Factor’ 2.0. Simon has the biggest songwriters in the world on standby holding massive hits, and is in talks to try to find the right partner to stream the project.”

Carrie Coon grateful for ‘grounded’ Ghostbusters character

OHMYGOSSIP — Carrie Coon is pleased that her ‘Ghostbusters’ character is “grounded in reality”.
The 43-year-old actress returns as Callie Spengler in ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ and praised the film’s writers for making her alter ego a mother with flaws.
Carrie told The Hollywood Reporter: “Callie feels like a very real mom who’s maybe not always great at the job, and makes mistakes and has to make repairs.
“That, to me, feels really grounded in reality in a way that movie moms aren’t always, especially when they’re serving a function in a story like Callie kind of is in this second film.
“And so I just appreciate that (co-writers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan) are always writing a family dynamic that feels like it could be very, very real, even though we’re busting ghosts.”
The ‘Gone Girl’ actress has admiration for Jason after he handed the responsibility of directing the movie to Kenan following the death of his father (and original ‘Ghostbusters’ director) Ivan Reitman at the age of 75 in 2022.
Carrie said: “Grief is such a profound and long process, and the only way (out) is through. So I really respect Jason for knowing himself well enough to realise that he did have to take that step back.
“He was still on set with us and very present, but when you saw him, it was always clear how palpable the experience was. There was that feeling that his father wasn’t going to get to see this. It’s like your parent never meeting your child. It’s that profound.”
Carrie also explained that she had to try and keep it together in a scene when her co-star Paul Rudd recited Ray Parker Jr.’s ‘Ghostbusters’ lyrics from the theme to the original 1984 flick.
She said: “Look, I make a real point out of trying really hard not to laugh at Paul just to keep him in his place. Somebody needs to do that for Paul, and that’s me.
“You don’t see the take where Paul actually sings the entire song at the top of his voice while he pursues me out of the room. So they really did choose the most subtle version of that moment for the movie.”

Ralph Fiennes heads cast of The Choral

OHMYGOSSIP — Ralph Fiennes, Jim Broadbent and Simon Russell Beale are starring in ‘The Choral’.
The actors have signed up to feature in the latest collaboration between director Sir Nicholas Hytner and writer Alan Bennett following on from ‘The History Boys’ and ‘The Lady in the Van’.
Unlike the pair’s previous films, ‘The Choral’ is an original script rather than an adaptation of one of Bennett’s plays.
The movie is set in Ramsden, Yorkshire in 1916 and follows the chorus master and the men in the ambitious local Choral Society, who have volunteered for the frontline during World War I.
Under the guidance of the demanding Dr. Guthrie (Fiennes), the Choral recruits a group of teenage boys and girls who discover the joy of singing while the new boys come to terms with the fact that they will soon be serving their country.
The film explores the humour and humanity in a community that faces an uncertain future.
Hytner said: “A new screenplay from Alan Bennett is a major event and ‘The Choral’ is as affecting and funny as anything he’s written in his long career.
“I am thrilled to be continuing my collaboration with him, and with the three remarkable leading actors.”
‘The Crucible’ filmmaker will produce the movie – which begins production in Yorkshire in May – together with Kevin Loader and Damian Jones.
Meanwhile, Ralph previously revealed that he would be open to a return to ‘Harry Potter’ if the opportunity arose after studio bosses expressed a desire to make more films based on J.K. Rowling’s novels.
Asked by Variety if he would play villain Lord Voldemort again, the 61-year-old actor said: “Sure, of course. No question about it.”

‘I effectively gave myself a C-section!’ Greg Rutherford reveals extent of his Dancing on Ice injury

OHMYGOSSIP — Greg Rutherford has opened about his “horribly painful” ‘Dancing on Ice’ injury, which saw him tear his abdominal muscles and herniate, ahead of undergoing surgery on Thursday (21.03.24).
The former Olympian was forced to withdraw from the ‘Dancing On Ice’ final on the morning of the spectacle after he suffered an injury in rehearsals, and he has now revealed he “effectively gave [himself] a C-section” when he attempted to leap through the legs of pro ice-skaters Brendyn Hatfield and Colin Grafton.
Speaking on his Instagram Story, he said: “Today is surgery day. Loads of people have been asking, ‘What happened?’
“I’ve been a bit busy and obviously just recovering from the initial injury before I had the surgery that I hadn’t got round to really talking about it.
“Long story short, I leapt through the legs of Brendyn and Colin and managed to tear all of my abs as well as herniate. So I effectively gave myself a C-section.
“So yes, it was horribly painful. It needs to be operated on today and then I’ll be properly on the mend. It was very painful, pretty horrible.”
A couple of days after missing out on the final – which was won by Ryan Thomas – due to the injury, the 37-year-old admitted he was still feeling “very sore and very tired” as he continued his recovery.
In an Instagram post, Greg said: “Seen a specialist today, I’ve got some scans tomorrow, and then I will know more about what’s going on, and what’s happening.
“I’m very sore and very tired so I’m going to get an early night tonight. But again I cannot believe the amount of lovely messages I’ve had so thanks very much. I’ll update everybody once I know what the next step is. This is grim.”

‘I was scared and nervous’ Emotional Scarlette Douglas updates fans on fertility journey

OHMYGOSSIP — Scarlette Douglas was in tears during a hospital visit, as she updated fans on her ongoing fertility journey.
The former ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’ star went into hospital this week for an egg-retrieval procedure, which she was “scared and nervous” about beforehand.
She wrote on Instagram, she said: “Well, I’m going to be honest, I was very uncomfortable going in today ladies.
“The trigger injection really did exacerbate the bloating and lower abdominal pain and the closer it was getting to my egg retrieval the more uncomfortable I was becoming.
“I had to sit on my left side for most of the day!
“Anyway, eventually I was called in and the nurse, anaesthetist and doctor were all present, super caring and very friendly. Everything was explained thoroughly and I felt in good hands. I did shed a little tear just before the sedation went in, mainly because I was scared and nervous, but also because you have to do it all on your own; no one can come in with you. (sic)”
But Scarlette was “over the moon” with the results, because 19 of her 24 eggs collected were found to be “viable for freezing”.
She said: “Anyway, best sleep I’ve ever had, came out, was in pain so they gave me some more pain relief, hung around for roughly an hour and a half afterwards and just as I was ready to leave the recovery room, I was told of my 24 eggs that were collected, 19 were viable for freezing!!!!! I was over the moon! That was more than I could have ever imagined and so I was and am so so happy that, to this point, it has all been worth it.
Off for my second nap since so catch you all tomorrow! (sic)”

Celebrity Big Brother’s Lauren Simon: Fern Britton is playing a game, she just wants to win!

OHMYGOSSIP — Celebrity Big Brother’s Lauren Simon believes Fern Britton is “playing a game” on the show.
The ‘Real Housewives of Cheshire’ star, 51, was the second housemate evicted from the current series of the ITV1 reality TV show, and she firmly believes former ‘This Morning’ presenter Fern is determined to taste victory on the show.
Lauren told Metro.co.uk: “I think Fern is playing a game if you want the truth, I don’t think she knows who she is or what she’s doing, she just wants to win.”
One of either Fern, Louis Walsh, David Potts, Nikita Kuzmin, Colson Smith or Bradley Riches have already been evicted from the house in a backdoor dumping on Wednesday (20.03.24), with that person’s identity set to be revealed on Thursday night’s (21.03.24) episode.
The remaining five will be in Friday’s (22.03.24) finale.
Lauren admitted it was “interesting” to see Fern gravitate towards some of the younger stars in the house.
She added: “The truth is that there became groups quite quickly, and everyone is playing a game and wants to win – some more than others – there was jealousy a little bit.
“The younger ones had their own group too and Fern interestingly enough preferred to play drama games with all the kids, because I don’t think that her and Louis and Sharon had a bond at all which was quite interesting to see, she gravitated more to the young kids.”
‘Celebrity Big Brother’ continues tonight at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX and is available in Ireland on Virgin Media Two and Virgin Media Player.

‘This is never going to happen’: John Rhys-Davies had major doubts about The Lord of the Rings trilogy

OHMYGOSSIP — John Rhys-Davies thought that ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy would be a disaster.
The 79-year-old actor played the dwarf warrior Gimli in Peter Jackson’s fantasy films but admits that he had serious doubts about the project because of the director’s lack of experience on major blockbusters.
John told the ‘Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum’ podcast: “I went with duplicity in my heart, to be honest with you, when I heard they were making ‘Lord of the Rings’. I said, ‘Oh yeah, good luck.’
“And who’s making it? Peter Jackson, he’s done one or two wonderful small movies. But let’s face it, if you’ve got a cast of four and six weeks, anyone can direct a movie, and sadly do. But has he any idea of what he’s really getting himself in for?”
The ‘Indiana Jones’ actor continued: “I did hear they were doing it, and I got asked to do something on tape. And I thought, ‘Lord of the Rings’, this is going to be a complete cluster whatever it is.
“I thought, never mind, I haven’t been to New Zealand, go there, take part for a month, look around and walk away. Because this is never going to happen. He has no idea what happens when you make a big movie, and you know I’ve done some big ones…”
John also had reservations about being covered in prosthetics and spending a lengthy period in New Zealand for production – but his decision to take the role was ultimately justified as the trilogy was hailed by critics and audiences and won a total of 17 Academy Awards.
He recalled: “When they came back and said we want you for Gimli, I thought what the hell. I’ve spent 30 years trying to be recognised, what the heck? Why would I want to put myself in a prosthetic like that and why would I want to spend five or six hours a day in makeup?
“More than that, who wants to spend three years in New Zealand, in a film that actually comes out in part one, fails and the other two go direct to video or something like that?”

Marisa Abela: Becoming smaller and frailer helped in Amy Winehouse portrayal

OHMYGOSSIP — Marisa Abela says that becoming “smaller and frailer” was useful for her portrayal of Amy Winehouse in the biopic ‘Back to Black’.
The 27-year-old star went to great lengths to recreate the late singer’s slender frame and thinks it helped in her depiction of the ‘Tears Dry on Their Own’ hitmaker, even though it took a tough physical toll.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar UK, Marisa said: “I had help to do it safely; I consulted a dietician and was being monitored. Feeling frailer and smaller helped – I hadn’t understood, before, how much that affects your tempo.
“During her ‘Frank’ era (when her first album was released), Amy is fast and loud and boisterous with her arms, her movements are big. Once I started to change, I realised that you can’t physically make those same movements. It’s uncomfortable to sit. You’re tired, you’re hungry, you’re more exposed.”
Marisa admits that she initially rejected the chance to play Amy in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s movie – which is slated for release on April 12 – because of the “huge” responsibility that the part would entail but soon forged a connection with the tragic star because of their shared Jewish upbringing.
She recalled: “My first instinct was to say, ‘No, that’s too much, too huge.’
“The more I got to know her, the more I felt a major connection to this spiky Jewish girl from London who had a lot to say and was really quite unafraid.
“I remembered how I felt when I was young, seeing that woman who was proud and cool, wearing a big Star of David in between a cleavage and a nice bra. I understood what a Friday night dinner would look like in her home, the humour in her family.
“I loved how effervescent she was, how huge a soul, how she just permeated any room she was in. But also, her relationship to her art form, and wanting to be good. That was the most important thing.”
Abela added: “Once I framed her in that way, I felt I was in a position to take on this role. I never wanted to trick anyone. Sometimes you audition and you say you can ride a horse, speak Spanish or sword fight, when you can’t.
“I was never, ever going to do that here. I was not going to put myself on the chopping block unless I knew I could do this.”

Five ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ finalists revealed!

OHMYGOSSIP — Louis Walsh, Fern Britton, David Potts, Nikita Kuzmin, Colson Smith have made it through as the five finalists of ‘Celebrity Big Brother’.
Thursday (21.03.24) night’s edition of the ITV show saw Bradley Riches become the seventh celebrity to be evicted from the ‘CBB’ house after 12 famous faces entered when the series kicked off at the beginning of March.
Bookies have declared the show is now a two horse race between former ‘X Factor’ judge Louis and David.
So far, Zeze Millz, Marisha Wallace, Lauren Simon, Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, Gary Goldsmith and Levi Roots have all left the house, with Sharon Osbourne also leaving after serving her time as ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ lodger.
TV presenter AJ Odudu announced the news to Bradley he was leaving on Thursday’s show while he sat waiting for a family member or friend to greet him for a rendezvous.
She told him during the episode – which saw family and friends drop in on all the other housemates: “Surprised to see me? As you can see neither a friend or family member is here for you.
“That is because the public have been voting.
“I can now reveal that the seventh housemate to be evicted from the Celebrity Big Brother house is you.”
Speaking in the diary room, actor Bradley – who opened up about his diagnosis with autism while on the show – said he had the “best time”.
He added: “I feel like I had the absolute best time, I’m so grateful I made so many amazing friends and for me to do this, I felt like I was scared to do it and I’ve done it and I’m so happy and I’m so grateful and I’ve just had the best time so thankyou Big Brother.”
Louis was visited on Thursday by ‘So Macho’ singer Sinitta Malone, who told him: “I need to tell you a few home truths quickly baby ’cause you know when I first met you, you said, ‘It’s always good to be nice’ – but Louis everybody in the house is nice but you.
“Louis you’re hilarious, but you’re not nice.”
Louis has caused storms on the show by having digs at his former ‘X Factor’ boss Simon Cowell and his former act Jedward, who he branded “vile” while boasting he’d made £5 million from the twins.
Voting for Friday’s (22.03.24) ‘CBB: Live Final’ has now reopened exclusively via the Big Brother app, with viewers being asked to vote for the housemate they want to win.
The vote will close during tomorrow night’s show.

Tina O’Brien ‘given week off work’ after street brawl

OHMYGOSSIP — Tina O’Brien has reportedly been given a week off work to recover after being caught up in a brawl with a group of teenage girls.
The 40-year-old actress – who plays Sarah Barlow in ‘Coronation Street’ – became involved n the showdown outside her £1 million house in Bramhall, Stockport, on March 15 after she stepped in to break up the fight and defend a 15-year-old girl – and a new report suggests she’s being fully supported by her bosses at ITV.
A source told The Sun newspaper: “Tina went straight to meet her ‘Corrie’ bosses this morning. She told them she was the victim here, and they have accepted that.
“They also think the incident has traumatised her so have been very sympathetic. Tina has been left really shaken and they told her to take a week off.”
Video footage of the incident shows Tina attempting to break the fight up before being caught in the middle of it and she’s heard saying: “Let go of her … stop. Let go of her, I just said stop. Let go of her.”
The mother of the girl defended by Tina has since praised the actress for stepping in to help after the group reportedly turned on the youngster in a fall-out over a boy.
The woman told The Sun: “Tina has been pretty brave in stepping in. Tina is only little herself and she was defending my daughter, so I am extremely grateful to her …
“I have thanked her and would have done the same if it was my house.”
The matter has since been reported to the police and an investigation has been launched. Greater Manchester Police said: “Officers are investigating reports of an assault in Stockport between 8pm and 9pm on 15 March.”

Kris Marshall got ‘sick’ of filming on steam train

OHMYGOSSIP — Kris Marshall got “sick” of filming ‘Beyond Paradise’ on a steam train after just a week.
The 50-year-old actor – who reprises his ‘Death in Paradise’ role as DI Humphrey Goodman in the spin-off show – was initially “excited” to learn the Shipton Abbott police department would be investigating a murder on a train and though it was initially a “wonderful” experience at first, the novelty soon wore off.
He told reporters: “When I first heard about it, I was like ‘well that’s quite meta and quite interesting’, and I really liked that idea.
“We started filming sort of mid-summer, and it was very hot. And it’s delightful being on a steam train and you think ‘this is just so bucolic and wonderful.’
“And then after about a week on a steam train, you’re like ‘I’m sick of this train now, I’m sick of this train’…
“I had the most fun… on the footplate of the train”.
But Kris did enjoy the night time shoots, particularly filming inside a blacked out hangar.
He said: “It was such a fun place to be.
“It’s kind of like being in your airing cupboard under your stairs during an earthquake, I’d imagine. You basically spend most of the day shaking around, staring at pipes. But it was wonderful.
“And I got to drive it as well, and they’re quite intricate things. I know they’re Victorian but they’re a feat of engineering still, they’re just beautiful things, like sort of living breathing beasts.”
The actor relishes getting to do anything “action-y” as part of the role.
He said: “Anything I get to do action-y, like jumping off things or falling out of windows or driving trains or jumping off boats. I love it. So sign me up for all of that.”
The show is filmed in Devon and Cornwall, which Kris thinks is a visual treat for viewers because it is “the most beautiful part of the UK”.

Jack Black is ‘ready’ for School of Rock sequel

OHMYGOSSIP — Jack Black is “ready” for a ‘School of Rock’ sequel.
The 54-year-old actor played rocker-turned-music teacher Dewey Finn in the 2003 comedy film and he’s now declared he’s keen to reprise the role for a follow-up and he’s even come up with a potential title inspired by 1984 musical sequel ‘Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo’.
He told JOE: “I wish there’d be a ‘School of Rock 2 Electric Boogaloo’. I’m ready.”
However, Black admitted he would only consider returning for a second film if original writer Mike White returns to pen the script, but he may be waiting some time because White is busy working on his ‘White Lotus’ TV series which he created, writes and directs.
Black added: “You know Mike White wrote the first one and he’s a genius. And we’d have to have Mike White back in the saddle, but he’s real busy right now with ‘White Lotus’, the best show on TV.”
It comes after Black reprised his role in the ‘Kung Fu Panda’ franchise for a fourth film. He plays Po in the animated flick and thinks that an all-star cast that features Awkwafina, Viola Davis and Dustin Hoffman makes the fourth film the best so far in the martial arts series.
He told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s Los Angeles premiere earlier this month (03.03.24): “I think it’s the funniest of the four, and it’s action-packed. “Our new cast members are insanely talented – Awkwafina is amazing, Viola Davis as the villain is, as usual, incredible, and my two dads, James Hong and Bryan Cranston.
“Everyone just kills it and it’s so fun to be back, because the last ‘Kung Fu Panda’ was 2016. How long has that been, eight years? So it’s really exciting to be back on a horsey blowing people’s minds again; I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”

Jake Gyllenhaal ‘punched in the face’ during Conor McGregor fight rehearsal

OHMYGOSSIP — Jake Gyllenhaal got “punched in the face” by Conor McGregor on the set of ‘Road House’.
The 43-year-old actor – who plays Elwood Dalton, an MMA fighter-turned bouncer in Doug Liman’s movie remake – was impressed by the charisma of the real-life UFC champion during filming, but things almost went wrong when they were rehearsing a fight scene off camera.
Praising Conor, who plays antagonist Knox, he said on SiriusXM’s ‘The Howard Stern Show’ “I think he’s just so charismatic.”
Howard noted: “He would scare me – even acting.”
Agreeing he was nervous ahead of their first fight scene, Jake said: “In that moment, I was like, ‘I’m about to get head-butted by Conor McGregor – what’s gonna happen?’
“[We were rehearsing]. It was like three in the morning and … he just clocked me, right in the face.
“I wish it was on film, but it wasn’t.”
The DJ laughed: “Jake, there’s no such thing as a mistake.”
Jake spent nearly a year training and dieting for the role, but he admitted he had previously learned a lesson while doing similar preparation for his 2015 boxing movie ‘Southpaw’ as he spent so much time trying to become a boxer, he had lost sight of what he needed to do as an actor, a problem identified by his acting coach, Penny Allen.
He recalled: “She said, ‘My dear, you’ve lost your imagination.’
“Obviously [if] you’re playing a boxer, you want to get in shape, you want to put your body through that—I like that stuff—but in the end the fun of acting is … just playing. Have fun.
“I think I’ve gotten to a place where, if you can learn something, and it brings you joy, and it can be joyful to the people around you, then let’s do that.”

Da’Vine Joy Randolph in talks for musical movie

OHMYGOSSIP — Da’Vine Joy Randolph is in talks to star in a new musical.
The Oscar-winning actress is said to be in negotiations to appear in the untitled Universal film from director Michel Gondry and producer Pharrell Williams.
The project is thought to be a coming-of-age musical that draws inspiration from the ‘Happy’ hitmaker’s upbringing in Virginia Beach during the 1970s and Kelvin Harrison Jr. is already confirmed to star.
Gondry will direct from a script by Martin Hynes and Steven Levenson with Williams, Mimi Valdes and Gil Netter all serving as producers.
Da’Vine, 37, recently won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress after starring as grieving mother Mary Lamb in ‘The Holdovers’ and explained that she is hoping to “infiltrate” genres where minorities are not traditionally represented in the film industry.
She told Variety magazine: “I don’t just want to do black movies. I will always pay tribute to, honour, uplift and be a part of black storytelling, but I need to infiltrate and get in the spaces where we’re not.
“I want to be in a Wes Anderson movie just ’cause. I want to be in a David O. Russell movie just ’cause. Coen brothers. I’ve never seen us there.
“Because that’s when I think we can really bring about educating and creating real change. If we just stay by ourselves, nothing is going to change.”
The Oscar win capped off a superb awards season for Randolph although she has insisted that the success will not “change” her.
Asked the difference between her now and before her Academy Awards triumph, she said: “There isn’t one. There’s a trophy in my house now, but I’m not different. You can’t come from Philadelphia and be changed; they won’t let you. This will be who I am.
“The roles will get better, the money will improve, the lines will get better. I hope to make a legacy and leave an imprint with this career. I hope my work will matter, and it will be something that people of all shapes, sizes, colours, creeds and genders can connect to.
“But me, and the soul of me, won’t change.”

Stephen Fry vomited five times a day when he was on Ozempic

OHMYGOSSIP — Stephen Fry vomited up to five times a day when he was on Ozempic.
The former ‘QI’ host, 66, said he was an “early adopter” of the weight loss drug, which is being taken by a glut of Hollywood celebrities after it was first released in the US in 2018 as a treatment for people with type 2 diabetes.
He told ‘Ruthie’s Table 4’ podcast: “I tried Ozempic years ago. I’m an early adopter of these things.
“I happened to be in America, and I’d read about it, and I asked my doctor in America, my physician as they like to call them, and he said, ‘I think I can get you some.’
“He tried me on it, and the first week or so, I was thinking, ‘This is astonishing: not only do I not want to eat, I don’t want any alcohol of any kind. This is going to be brilliant.’”
But turning the to adverse effects of the injected drug: “I started feeling sick, and I started getting sicker and sicker and sicker.
“I was literally throwing up four, five times a day and I thought, ‘I can’t do this.’
“So that’s it. The new variant – tirzepatide, Mounjaro, it’s called, makes it even worse, apparently.”
Stephen said in 2019 he had lost nearly six stone after doing a fast eight mile walk every morning,
Ozempic is administered via a weekly injection to manage blood glucose levels, can only be prescribed by GPs or pharmacists for people with type 2 diabetes.
Shortagrs of the drug have been reported after famous faces such as Sharon Osbourne, 71, started to talk about how it had slashed their weight, with rich patients buying doses for thousands of pounds online.
Stephen also told in 2019 he hit 21 stone, and told the ‘Table 4’ podcast his love of food came from his childhood.
He added: “My parents did have a cook, and we had gardeners and we had an old-fashioned Victorian kitchen garden.
“She was what used to be called a good English plain cook. She didn’t do anything terribly fancy, but everything she did was just right – pies and tarts and things like that she was very good at.”
He also said as a child he would spend “whatever money he had” on buying sweets.

‘Mr Bates Vs The Post Office’ wins first major award

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Mr Bates Vs The Post Office’ has won the Jury Prize at the Broadcasting Press Guild’s award ceremony.
The ITV drama, which stars 57-year-old Toby Jones as sub postmaster Alan Bates, and follows the story of the Post Office Scandal – which saw hundreds of sub postmasters be wrongly accused of theft due to the faulty IT system Horizon – was awarded the prestigious honour at the 50th anniversary of the ceremony on Thursday (21.03.24.)
BPG Chair Manori Ravindran said: “As an organisation of journalists, the BPG members wanted to be the first to pay tribute to a truly unique story and a piece of landmark television that created massive headlines, gripped a huge TV audience and helped clear the names of the victims of a gross miscarriage of justice.”
Despite the success of the Post Office scandal drama, its writer Gwyneth Hughes admitted she believed the show would flop.
She told Sky News: “We’ve all been blown away by it [the reception.]
“On the eve of transmission, our boss sent us all a comforting email warning us that it probably wouldn’t do that well, and probably not many would watch it.
“So we woke up [the] next morning and he literally thought he had misheard the ratings, and it just has got bigger and bigger.
“The whole thing is unbelievable, the story of the postmasters, and what happened to them was completely unbelievable from beginning to end and this is just the latest unbelievable chapter in the unfolding, ongoing story.”
Tobey Jones was also blown away by the reception to the programme, and revealed he took a pay cut to ensure ‘Mr Bates Vs The Post Office’ could be made.
In an interview with The Times, he said: “There is a huge possibility that shows like ‘Mr Bates’ will not be made in the future. Not because TV commissioners don’t want them, but because they can’t afford them. The financial pressures are too great.
“These kinds of four-part, very British, thoughtful dramas are massively at threat because distributors worry that it is less likely that they will recoup their investment than they would from an international thriller with lots of episodes.”
