OHMYGOSSIP — ‘The Nightingale’ director has insisted the movie is not “gratuitous or exploitative” after claims it had too many scenes of graphic violence and rape.
The 2018 Australian period thriller film was written and directed by Jennifer Kent and follows a young convict woman (Aisling Franciosi) in 1825 Tasmania seeking revenge for a terrible act of violence committed against her family during the frontier war massacres of Indigenous Australians.
Following a mass walkout at early screenings of the movie, the ‘Babadook’ filmmaker has defended her film, alleging that the movie is “not about violence” and revealed that she had been contacted by victims of sexual violence, who had thanked her for the honest portrayal.
In a statement, she said: “I do not believe this would be happening if the film was at all gratuitous or exploitative.
“Whilst ‘The Nightingale’ contains historically accurate depictions of colonial violence and racism towards our Indigenous people, the film is not ‘about’ violence.”
Jennifer went on to say that ‘The Nightingale’ had actually toned down some of the violence suffered by Indigenous Australians and contains a historically accurate depiction of the violence suffered by those in Tasmania.
She said: “We’ve made this film in collaboration with Tasmanian Aboriginal elders, and they feel it’s an honest and necessary depiction of their history and a story that needs to be told. I remain enormously proud of the film.”
“If we showed what really happened in Tasmania in 1825, no audience could bear it.”
The movie debuted at the Sydney Film Festival last week and saw the majority of the sold-out audience at The Ritz in Randwick walk out within the first 20 minutes of the movie.

OHMYGOSSIP — Simon Rimmer could be tempted by ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’
The TV chef – who appeared on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ in 2017 – has admitted he would be keen on a stint in the jungle after the camp had a much friendlier atmosphere last year.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “I’d probably do the jungle. I always said I wouldn’t, but think I’ve become quite intrigued by that…
“It’s a slightly different show now too – it’s a really nice warm cuddly show these days.”
Although some viewers were disappointed by the lack of drama, the 56-year-old star was moved by the “really lovely” camp mates and how they interacted with each other.
He added: “In the past it always felt the jungle thrived on the tension in the camp. But this year in particular, I thought was really lovely.
“Just a really nice bunch of people. Emily [Atack] was brilliant, Fleur [East] was brilliant, Harry [Redknapp] was amazing, really good this year.”
The ‘Sunday Brunch’ presenter was paired with dancing pro Karen Clifton on ‘Strictly’ two years ago, and when he left after six weeks he praised the “positive” experience.
He said at the time. “Do you know it has been the most amazing experience ever from the minute I walked in through the door.
“The ‘Strictly experience’ is just so positive, every single person involved in it is so positive. And like, all of that lot up there, all the rest of the class of 2017, are just magnificent people. All the pro dancers are amazing.”
However, he has now dismissed the idea of trying out his skills on the rink.
He said: “I definitely wouldn’t do ‘Dancing On Ice!’ ”

OHMYGOSSIP — Christopher Biggins was “quite insulted” when he first got offered a pantomime role.
The veteran entertainer was just 24 years old when he was approached to star in his first panto as the “dame” – a role typically played by older men – and he took some convincing before he agreed to the career departure.
He told the Sunday Post newspaper: “I remember when I was asked to do my first pantomime, I was absolutely amazed. Funnily enough, I was quite insulted! The reason for that was because every pantomime dame I had seen was in their 60s.
“They were much older but suddenly here they were, asking a 24-year-old to do pantomime, and I thought, ‘No, I’m not going to do that.’ These people kept asking and asking and asking, until eventually they mentioned money.
“This was in Darlington, at the Civic Theatre, and they told me it would be a thousand pounds a week. I couldn’t believe it. Tickets were one-and-six! So I thought, well, I’d better do it. Of course, once I did it I loved it.”
The 70-year-old TV star – who pointed out that the likes of Sir Ian McKellen and Simon Callow have also been involved in the lighthearted festive family performances – admitted he had a similar thought when he was first asked to do a children’s TV show.
Biggins – who started his career in the likes of ‘Porridge’, ‘I, Claudius’ and ‘Poldark’ – added: “I was insulted. I told them I don’t do that, I’m an actor.
“But they also persevered and once again money was mentioned and I thought I had better do it. So I did it, too, and of course I loved it, too. I did ‘Rentaghost’, which was really fantastic and I loved doing it.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Stephanie Davis has thanked Owen Warner for being “the most amazing daddy” to her son.
The 26-year-old actress sent a heartfelt message to her boyfriend and ‘Hollyoaks’ co-star on Father’s Day on Sunday (16.06.19), in which she praised him for all the support he offers to her and two-year-old Caben, whose biological father is model Jeremy McConnell.
She shared a selection of videos and pictures of Owen and Caben together and wrote on Instagram: “HAPPY FATHERS DAY!! Thankyou Owen for being the most amazing daddy, for loving me unconditionally, for being my best bud & for all the fun we have together and all you do for me.
“My mummy once wished for me to have the most amazing daddy who would love me and care for me, and now I have one, the best one In the whole world [heart emoji] I’m so lucky to have you and everything you do for me ! Love Caben [heart emoji] ps, mummy is the happiest mummy in the world (sic)”
And Stephanie also took the time to thank her own father for his support and to reassure him she’s in good hands with her current partner.
She added: To my Dad, Thankyou for helping me raise caben, for being there for us, for helping me in every way you have, now you have more time to relax as you know we are both looked after now by owen. I love you so much, no words will ever be enough. I love you, always, Stephanie xxx(sic)”
Stephanie also used her Instagram Story to praise Owen, as well as taking a swipe at her former lover Jeremy.
She shared a post which read: “The word ‘daddy’ is not defined by whether or not a man has a biological child.
“You can never produce a child and be a daddy, likewise you can have 20 kids and never be a ‘daddy’.
“A daddy is a man who cares for a child’s both physical and emotional needs.
“He puts the child’s wants and needs ahead of his own.
“A true Daddy is hard to come by but a truly special thing.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Liam Fox’s fiancee was “weeks away from death” before they got together.
The ‘Emmerdale’ actor – who plays Dan Spencer in the soap – first met Joanna Hudson when they were at university together but they lost contact before getting back in touch and embarking on a romance in 2017, and the actress admitted she treasures their relationship even more after being diagnosed with rare autoimmune disease myasthenia gravis in 2015.
She said: “I was seriously ill in 2015 and nearly lost my life, which makes me appreciate what I have with Liam even more.
“I nearly died from a tumour; when it was discovered, I was weeks away from death.
“I realised something was wrong when I started getting double vision so I went to Specsavers who gave me glasses, but that didn’t help.
“I was eventually referred to a consultant and was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis.
“The consultant gave me a scan, which discovered I had a tumour caused by the illness growing on my thymus gland [near the heart], which would’ve killed me if it wasn’t discovered. I had it removed and three months later I was fully recovered!”
Joanna is thankful she hasn’t had any long-term problems from the tumour and barely thinks about it any more.
She told OK! magazine: “I go for regular scans to make sure it hasn’t come back, but so far I’ve been fine.
“At the time it totally consumed me, I was terrified, but now I don’t think about it much.”
Although Liam – who was previously married to former ‘Hollyoaks’ star Nicole Barber-Lane – and Joanna have known each other for decades, he doesn’t think things would have “worked out” if their relationship had turned romantic sooner.
The actor – who proposed in April – said: “I don’t necessarily think it would have worked out if we’d got together earlier.
“We’ve both matured and grown as people and now we’re in a place where we’re ready to settle down with each other and appreciate what we have.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Sam Aston says the ‘Coronation Street’ cast are a “down to earth” family.
The 26-year-old actor – who plays Chesney Brown on the ITV soap – made his debut on the cobbles in 2003, and the star has revealed he was able to juggle going to school and being on set with the help of his supportive family and his grounded co-stars.
Speaking on Monday’s episode of ‘This Morning’ (17.06.19), he said: “You’d have a minimum of three hours tutoring per day, you’d finish on set and then you’d go off and do your school work. I felt a big weight off my shoulders when I didn’t need tutoring anymore.
“Being there 15-16 years it’s bizarre really. I suppose it’s not an ordinary upbringing but I was very lucky with my family, my mum and dad, and as well though Corrie itself, everybody there is so normal and down to earth, I think if you did let it get to you a bit, it probably wouldn’t.”
And Sam insisted that when he went for his first audition for the soap, he wasn’t nervous because he didn’t “understand the magnitude” of the show.
He added: “I got the audition for ‘Corrie’, but no [I didn’t realise how big it was]. I was nervous but I think if I was to do it now, I’d be like ‘Oh my goodness’ because it’s massive.
“You don’t understand the magnitude because when you’re eight or nine years old because I was just doing something I enjoyed.”
The ITV soap star also insisted that it was “daunting” growing up with the show and having to attend school, but he “soon made friends”.
He said: “It’s tough I suppose. I remember starting high school, it was a bit tricky because I went at a time when I was really busy in the show that was a bit daunting, but I soon made friends.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Matthew Wolfenden doesn’t mind whether his next child is a girl or a boy.
The ‘Emmerdale’ actor – whose wife and co-star Charley Webb is pregnant with their third child – admitted although his family is very male dominated, he doesn’t mind if they welcome another son into the world instead of their first daughter.
Matthew – who has sons Buster, nine, and Bowie, three, with his partner – was asked about having a baby girl, and told ITV’s ‘Loose Women’: “As long as they’re healthy [I don’t mind].
“I come from a long line of boys, and there’s four Wolfenden cousins and we’ve got seven grandchildren, they’re all boys. It’s not looking likely, but who knows?”
The soap star’s alter ego David Metcalfe recently discovered his girlfriend Maya Stepney (Louisa Clein) has been grooming his son Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) for months.
While the show’s difficult storyline has had critics regarding its more “disturbing” elements, the 39-year-old actor insisted that was the tone the show needed to go for.
He explained: “There was a lot of people that hated the storyline and they couldn’t watch it, but that’s kind of what we wanted to do. We didn’t want it to be in any way a schoolboy fantasy of a young boy and an older teacher. We had to make it gross, we had to make it disturbing.”
Matthew admitted the storyline has made him “more aware” as a parent of certain safety issues with young children, and he hopes it has done the same for other people.
He said: “I think with young children, you’re always aware but that has completely made me more aware. My oldest boy’s nine now and they’re working from iPads at school, they’re getting to bring iPads home. The school sent out a memo, we all went in and talked about online safety.
“I’m not saying that’s come from the ‘Emmerdale’ storyline but if it’s made people more aware of what can happen, then it’s done a really good job.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Daniel Craig will resume filming for ‘Bond 25’ this week.
Last month, it was announced that the 51-year-old actor had to have “minor” surgery on his injured ankle and undergo two weeks of rehabilitation after he slipped whilst shooting a running scene for the action blockbuster on location in Jamaica.
Now, it has been revealed that Daniel – who will play the spy for the fifth and final time in the upcoming instalment – will return on set at some point this week and is “hitting the gym hard” in preparation for the role.
Sharing a photo of Daniel working out in the gym, on Sunday (16.06.19) the official James Bond Instagram account wrote: “#007 Daniel Craig hitting the gym hard @pinewoodstudios, prepping for shooting next week! #Bond25 (sic)”
The Hollywood hunk was reportedly flown to the US after the fall so he could be examined by the same surgeon who has treated England and Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane.
The official Twitter account for ‘Bond 25’ released the statement at the time reading: “Daniel Craig will be undergoing minor ankle surgery resulting from an injury sustained during filming in Jamaica. Production will continue whilst Craig is rehabilitating for two weeks post-surgery. The film remains on track for the same release date in April 2020.”
A source said recently: “Daniel was suited and booted for one of the last scenes in Jamaica. He was sprinting during filming when he slipped and fell quite awkwardly.
“He was in quite a lot of pain and was complaining about his ankle. As you’d expect he was also pretty angry that it had happened. He threw his suit jacket on the ground in sheer frustration.
“Daniel flew out of Jamaica for the US and has already seen a specialist.
“In a pure coincidence it’s the same surgeon who treated Tottenham and England striker Harry Kane. He’s hoping it won’t delay things for too long.”

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Dark Phoenix’ director Simon Kinberg says it’s his fault the film didn’t “connect with audiences”.
The latest ‘X-Men’ movie made its debut last weekend and pulled in just $33 million at the US box office against an estimated $200 million production cost, the superhero film also scored 23 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest ever rating for a film in the franchise.
The 45-year-old director wrote and helmed the movie – which followed Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey as she’s transformed into one of the world’s most powerful and dangerous mutants – and he accepts that it’s “on him” that the movie “didn’t work”.
Speaking on KCRW podcast The Business, he said: “I’m here and I’m saying when a movie doesn’t work, put it on me. I’m the writer/director of the movie, the movie didn’t connect with audiences, that’s on me.”
Despite the film’s poor reception, the ‘Deadpool’ director insisted that he enjoyed making the movie, and referenced a conversation he’d previously had with Sir Ridley Scott in which he revealed that the much maligned ‘G.I. Jane’ – which was released in 1997 and starred Demi Moore as Lieutenant Jordan O’Neil, a woman trying to make it in the US Navy – was his favourite film to work on, rather than his more acclaimed movies such as ‘Alien’, ‘Gladiator’ or ‘Blade Runner’.
Kinberg – who he worked with Scott on the 2015 thriller ‘The Martian’ – explained: “He said it was his favourite because it was just a great process and he learned a lot on the process of making it. I’ve thought about that a lot over the years, and I thought about it a whole lot over the last weekend.”
Kinberg added that he also received support from Tim Miller, with whom he worked on the first ‘Deadpool’ film, following the far from enthusiastic response to ‘Dark Phoenix’.
He said: “He wrote me an email having empathy for a movie that doesn’t work. People will come to see the movie differently, and out of the context of this particular moment, see things in it they will appreciate and that he appreciated as a fan.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Peter Andre says all reality shows should be scrapped after ‘The Jeremy Kyle Show’ was axed.
Last month, ITV chief executive Carolyn McCall announced that after 14 years, the talk show had been cancelled following the death of one of its guests, and the 46-year-old singer – who also alleged that shows like ‘The Voice’ and ‘X Factor’ could have a negative impact on some contestants – feels in light of the programme being taken off air; broadcasters need to go “go across the board” and remove all shows which have a “reality side”.
In an interview with The Guardian, he said: “It is the most horrific thing that somebody took their own life, we cannot forget that. What I do think is if they are taking that show off, they should be taking a lot of shows off.
“Any show where there is a reality side. I think they’re all great shows in their own way, but what about the people who have left ‘The Voice’ or ‘The X Factor’ who have been devastated because they’ve been told they’re rubbish, and it drives them to drink?
“You’ve got to go across the board if you’re going to do this. You can’t single out.”
The ‘Mysterious Girl’ hitmaker went on to insist there needs to be a “duty of care” across all television networks and highlighted ‘Love Island’ as an example following the deaths of former participants Sophie Gradon, 32, and Mike Thalassitis, 26, both of whom took their own lives after appearing on the show.
He added: “I thought: what about all these other shows – ‘Love Island’, for example – where people have died?
“They were attacking Jeremy Kyle because his name is attached to the show. There has to be a duty of care across the networks. It’s not just one person or one show.
“Look at a guy like Mike Thalassitis, I only met him once or twice, Greek guy, 26 years old, looked in peak condition, good-looking guy, and he went and took his own life because of mental health. Twenty-six years old!”
Following the deaths of Mike and Sophie, ‘Love Island’ fell under scrutiny for its aftercare programme, prompting producers to bring in new plans for the current series.
ITV have revealed there will be more detailed conversations with potential Islanders regarding the impact of participation on the show, and bespoke training for all Islanders on social media and financial management, which extends support to all Islanders following their participation.

OHMYGOSSIP — Dani Dyer wants to give Lucie Donlan “a cuddle” after Joe Garratt questioned her friendship with Tommy Fury.
The former ‘Love Island’ winner has weighed in after Sunday night’s (16.06.19) episode, which saw Joe admit he has his “doubts” about her being close with their fellow islander rather than the other girls in the villa.
Dani – who won the ITV2 dating show with then boyfriend Jack Fincham last year – tweeted: “Just wanna give Lucie a cuddle they need to chill out leave the girl alone”
And Amber Daves – who triumphed in the villa alongside Kem Cetinay in 2017 – also leaped to Lucie’s defence on social media.
She wrote: “Joe can you please just like Lucie for LUCIE and not who you want her to be. Thank you x”
During the episode, Joe was seen in the Beach Hut ranting about the friendship and claiming the blonde beauty’s behaviour is unfair.
He said: “Lucie and Tommy always go off and have little chats. I know they’re just friends but it’s strange. She knows it’ll be affecting me. She’s not really caring that much.”
The pair did have a conversation about the situation, as he told her: “The whole thing with Tommy, it is strange. You were with him for a good hour.”
However, Lucie pointed out that it’s just an platonic friendship, and that there is nothing going on between her and Tommy.
She added: “Yes because I get on with him better than the girls. It doesn’t mean there is a romantic thing there.”
Despite the drama, Joe still chose Lucie in the recoupling over the weekend, and he ultimately decided to stay with her and “see how this goes”.

OHMYGOSSIP — Glenda Jackson is set to star in ‘Elizabeth Is Missing’ as she makes her long-awaited TV return.
The 83-year-old actress and former Labour party politician will take on the role of Maud in the BBC’s upcoming feature length adaptation of Emma Healey’s best selling novel of the same name, with the script for the drama penned by Andrea Gibb and Aisling Walsh directing.
Glenda said: “Emma’s novel and Andrea’s screenplay paint the most striking portrait of a woman in the grip of a devastating condition. “I am delighted to be making my return to television to play Maud, a character it’s impossible not to be charmed and moved by.”
It will mark the first time in over 25 years the ‘Women In Love’ actress has appeared on the small screen.
The story combines mystery with an emotional exploration of a woman’s battle with dementia as Maud is convinced something terrible has happened.
The synopsis adds: “But with her dementia worsening, unfinished business unearthed and the past and present starting to merge, Maud’s search takes on a poignant urgency. Will Maud be able to discover the truth before she loses herself completely?”
Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, added: “We are thrilled that Glenda Jackson is returning to the BBC and will be at the heart of this inspiring and extraordinary tale. “Andrea Gibb’s brilliantly crafted script and adaptation of ‘Elizabeth Is Missing’ explores important themes told through emotion, warmth and humour.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Paddy McGuinness says the new ‘Top Gear’ team already feel like they’ve been together for “a few series”.
The 45-year-old presenter is fronting the new series of the BBC’s car show alongside Chris Harris, 44, and fellow newcomer Freddie Flintoff, 41, and he said there was instant chemistry between the three hosts.
He told Metro.co.uk: “With us, I was so pleased that we all clicked straight away.
“It [feels] like we kind of already did a few series, which I was really pleased about, because that was a worry you know, do you get on do you not? But we all do.”
The trio’s first series kicked off on Sunday night (16.06.19), and Paddy admitted the three of the have “the best job in the world”.
He added: “We’re like big kids, we’ve got the best job in the world always driving around in these fantastic cars all over the world, it’s great!
“My passport has never seen as many stamps. It’s amazing. Portugal is about as far as I’d got [before].”
Flintoff – who has carved out a successful broadcasting career since retiring from cricket – has always been a fan of the series and he recently admitted getting the chance to host it is a dream come true.
He previously said: “My agent came up and said, ‘Do you want to try out for ‘Top Gear’?’ It’s something we’d chatted about in the past. If there’s one job on TV I’ve always wanted to have a go at it was ‘Top Gear’.
“I love the show when I went home [after the screen-test] I was desperate to get it. They left me hanging a bit to be honest. But when I got it I couldn’t believe it. I have no idea why they picked me. I try not to think about it, in a way it doesn’t feel real. When it goes out on Sunday – that’s when I think it’ll finally sink in.”

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Love Island’ newcomers Jordan Hames and Tom Walker are set to shake up the villa in Monday night’s episode (17.06.19).
After Sunday night’s (16.06.19) dramatic recoupling, Anna Vakili and Maura Higgins were left single and headed out of the villa to go on dates with the two new hunky boys, however, when they return, their fellow Islanders are left less than impressed with who they’ve set their sights on.
The Islanders gather around the fire pit and everyone is keen to know more about the new boys and fill Anna, Maura, Tom and Jordan in on the fact that they had to vote for who they thought were the two least compatible couples, putting them at risk of being dumped.
However, Maura seems more fixed on new boy Tom and reveals she’s “living the dream”.
In the Beach Hut, she admits: “They got a text when we were on our dates saying that two couples are vulnerable. Sorry huns, I was enjoying my champagne with hunky Tom. Living the dream!”
Amber is left keen to know who the new boys have set their sights on now they’ve arrived in the villa, and Tom wastes no time in stating who has caught his eye.
Tom says: “Maura. And I like Elma as well.”
And gym owner, Anton Danyluk – who is coupled up with Elma Pazar – jokes he is once again in a love triangle.
He says: “Sums it up. A guy that comes in and his job [as a model] is to be good-looking and he likes the girl that I’m coupled up with!”
However, Jordan wants to remain more mysterious and ultimately keep his cards close to his chest.
He says “Anna. But I haven’t spoken to anyone else yet.”
Later that evening, Anna has a gossip with the girls about her dates and admits she is “nervous”.
Anna says: “On my date with Jordan, I was getting nervous! I never get nervous.”
Tom then spends time with Maura but also has a chat with Elma, confessing that he finds her attractive.
That evening as the girls get ready for the night and Yewande asks Elma: “Do you fancy Tom?”
Elma replies: “He’s a really nice boy. I’d get on with him.”
But Maura is present during this chat and looks less than impressed with the idea of competing with Elma for Tom’s affections.
Later as she talks to Lucie Donlan, Maura says she is keen to have a one-on-one relationship in the villa.
She says: “She’s [Elma] going to get in the way. I don’t want to be in another triangle!”

The couple had a rough couple of days after Maura Higgins flirted up a storm with the boxer – the brother of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury – and tried to steal his affections but she was soon stopped in her tracks as the 20-year-old hunk chose Molly-Mae in a high-stake recoupling on Sunday night (16.06.19).

Viewers can vote to save one Islander from each couple.
The person with the least votes will be dumped from the villa in announcement by host Caroline Flack on Tuesday night (17.06.19).

OHMYGOSSIP — Piers Morgan jokes Sharon Osbourne scares him more than murderers.
The 54-year-old broadcaster is fronting a new show next week ‘Psychopath’ which sees him going behind bars in Texas to meet killer Paris Bennett, who stabbed his four-year-old sister to death at the age of 13.
Asked whether he gets more nervous chatting to celebrities for ‘Life Stories’ than he does interviewing inmates, Piers joked to TV Times: “It’s a toss-up whether someone like Sharon Osbourne is more or less dangerous to interview than someone who’s killed 20 people.
“I don’t know how many people she’s killed with her bare hands but I imagine the answer is not zero!”
Meanwhile, the ‘Good Morning Britain’ host insisted he has a talent for making anyone – whether they’re a celebrity or a killer – open up to him about their lives.
He added: “Trust me, trying to keep them in the room without alienating them is an art form.”
Meanwhile, Piers recently admitted he should probably review his “public persona” after receiving a namecheck on ‘Coronation Street’.
Although he was thrilled to receive the “badge of honour” of being mentioned on the popular soap last month, that disappeared once it was explained to him that David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) had joked he had to calm the rage the ‘Life Stories’ interviewer had sparked in his mother Gail McIntyre (Helen Worth).
