Kevin Costner makes room for ‘strong women characters’ in his movies

OHMYGOSSIP — Kevin Costner ensures that “strong women characters” feature in his films.
The 69-year-old star is directing the epic Western ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ and thinks that focusing on female characters means his work appeals to all even though it is geared towards male viewers.
Kevin told the Happy Sad Confused podcast: “I make movies for men. That’s what I do.
“But I won’t make a movie unless I have strong women characters. That’s how I’ve conducted my career.
“I think that’s why I have a good following. I thank you women for dragging your men here. It was a Western after all. I just can’t conceive of a movie without having (strong women).”
The ‘Horizon’ series features female cast members including Sienna Miller and Jena Malone and Kevin felt that the feminist perspective was imperative to the four-part saga.
The ‘Dances with Wolves’ actor told ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’ earlier this month: “This has a tremendous amount of women in it. They play such a big part of the West and what happened.
“They were often taken out there against their will and with their children on the idea that there was something great out there. There was nothing out there except a group of people who lived there for thousands of years.
“Women were dragged into the most terrible of circumstances and made it work. And somehow they don’t find themselves in Westerns and in ‘Horizon’ they dominate.”
The opening movie in the saga marks Costner’s first directorial outing for over 20 years but he knew he had to get behind the camera on a film that is such a passion project for him.
Kevin told The Hollywood Reporter: “Sometimes you wonder if you can still ride the bike, but what I knew was I believed so much in my story that I really was the one that needed to direct this.
“I didn’t want to come away not bringing everything home that I thought the movie had a chance to deliver.”

Ronnie Vint and Harriett Blackmore exit Love Island

OHMYGOSSIP — Ronnie Vint and Harriett Blackmore have been dumped from the ‘Love Island’ villa.
The 27-year-old soccer player and Harriett, 24, have become the latest Islanders to leave the dating show, after the public voted to dump them from the villa.
After their exit was announced, Harrriett told the other Islanders: “I’m going to miss you all very dearly – but you’re going to smash it all, and I’m so happy that I’ve made friends for life.”
Ronnie, meanwhile, admitted to loving his time on the show, and he wished the other Islanders the best of luck for the rest of the series.
He told them: “It’s been a pleasure meeting you all, man, honestly. And I’ll see you all when you’re out – keep smashing your journeys.”
Prior to entering the villa, Ronnie revealed that he was keen to find his dream girl and settle down.
He shared: “I’ve got to the age where I want to find the right person I can build a life with.
“I want someone that’s family-orientated, caring and career-minded.
“Looks-wise, I like blondes with nice boobs – but am partial to a brunette, too.”
Meanwhile, Harriet previously revealed that she was looking for someone with “good energy”.
The dancer explained: “Good looks and personality are important, too. I need someone with good energy that I can bounce off.”
What’s more, Harriet promised to bring some “drama” to the ‘Love Island’ villa.
She said: “Whether that’s making the girls laugh or making the boys turn their heads, I’m sure that I’ll bring the drama.”

Shirley Ballas driven to make bucket list following cancer scare

OHMYGOSSIP — Shirley Ballas has drawn up a “bucket list” following her “terrifying” cancer scare.
The ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ judge feared for her health earlier this year after discovering a lump in her breast, but two mammograms, an ultrasound and three biopsies eventually found no trace of the disease.
But Shirley, 63, admitted the “terrifying” time made her want to take more time for herself and her family, including her 87-year-old mother Audrey, so she’s planning to embark on a number of memorable experiences.
She told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “I’m always running around.
“I’m learning as I get older to spend more face time with family.
“I’ve got lots of things I want to do with my mother, we’ve got a little bucket list going on. I want to go and see the giraffes on a safari, where they come in and have breakfast with you. That would be amazing. I won’t do panto while my mum is still with me, I always spend Christmas with her.”
Shirley will also be keeping a close eye on her health as Audrey is in remission from colon cancer, while two of her grandparents and her aunt also battled forms of the disease.
She said: “I get check-ups every three months. It’s ongoing…
“It’s so important to get checked.”
Shirley previously admitted she felt “blessed” when she was told she didn’t have cancer.
She said on Instagram: “Thank you to you all for your well wishes following my two mammograms, one ultrasound and three biopsies last week.
“I am feeling blessed to share that my results have come back all clear – there is no cancer present.
Referring to how she posted a picture of herself with a bandaged chest amid her tests, Shirley added: “Sharing the picture to my story last week very much triggered my emotions but I feel it’s only right for me to share both the highs and the lows of life.
“If I was able to help just one lady, then sharing my picture was worth it.
“I got my recall while on holiday and I immediately cleared my diary to allow for the appointment. I urge all women to do the same.
“Please do not put your mammogram, smear test or in fact any appointment off. They really can change your life. Who knows what may have happened if I put mine off? Get booked, get checked, get your body MOT everyone.”

Russell T Davies: Casting busy Ncuti Gatwa in Doctor Who was a ‘risk’

OHMYGOSSIP — Russell T. Davies has admitted casting Ncuti Gatwa in ‘Doctor Who’ was a “risk” because of his busy schedule.
The 31-year-old actor rose to fame as Eric Effiong in ‘Sex Education’ before stepping into the TARDIS and the showrunner admitted they were restricted by his prior filming commitments, but he still feels they got the right person as the 15th Timelord.
Russell told the latest issue of ‘Doctor Who’ magazine: “Casting Ncuti meant casting him before he’d finished on ‘Sex Education’. That was a risk that we took, but it was absolutely the right risk, because it meant we got the best possible Doctor in 2024 that we could wish for.”
And because of Ncuti’s absence, Russell was able to push ahead with the idea he’d had for ’73 Yards’, in which Millie Gibson’s Ruby Tuesday took centre stage.
He said: “I love a Doctor-lite episode. But, let’s face it, if Ncuti had been available, we would never have done a Doctor-lite episode in season 1…
“And the marvellous thing was, I’d had this idea kicking around for ages, of the Doctor and his companion stepping outside the TARDIS and seeing someone in the distance.
“But I could never make it work with two people. So when it became Doctor-lite – when it was just Ruby, and we were able to follow her whole life – it sort of freed itself.
“Also, I thought there was a nice balance, pairing it with ‘Boom’, which is such a character piece for the Doctor. That ended up dictating the shape of the series: a Doctor-heavy episode, followed by a Ruby-heavy episode.”
Russell was delighted by Millie’s “stunning” performance in the episode.
He added: “And I have to say, Millie is absolutely sensational. She walked in, from Coronation Street, onto leading this. No offence to Coronation Street, but that’s a big old runaway train, where you’re part of a cast of 70 or more. And suddenly, you’re in a cast of one, practically.”

Sean Wilson to return to Coronation Street for Helen Worth’s exit

OHMYGOSSIP — Sean Wilson is set to return to ‘Coronation Street’ for Helen Worth’s exit storyline.
The 73-year-old actress is departing her role as Gail Platt later this year after 50 years, and it has now been revealed she will get a happy ending by reconciling with former husband Martin Platt – who Sean played from 1985 to 2000 before making a brief return in 2018 to say goodbye to his on-screen family when his character decided to emigrate to New Zealand – and leaving Weatherfield.
A source told The Sun newspaper: “A number of options were considered for Gail’s departure from the cobbles but bosses knew the moment needed to truly celebrate one of Corrie’s most iconic characters as well as honour Helen’s astonishing run on the soap.
“It just didn’t sit right to kill her off or have Gail suffer more tragedy after, let’s face it, a pretty traumatic life.
“Martin was always considered the one that got away and bosses are thrilled they’ve been able to tempt Sean back to wave Gail goodbye.
“The plotline has many nuances, twists and turns but script writers all want this to feel like a gorgeous end of Gail’s story, with her finally finding her happy ending.”
Helen confirmed earlier this month she had signed her final contract and would be leaving the soap at the end of the eyar.
Making her announcement, she said: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world. I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding.
“I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew.
“The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”
At the time, soap bosses teased that Gail will “bid farewell to Weatherfield in a major storyline for the Platt family”.
Meanwhile, Sean previously admitted he’d return to the soap if producers pitched the right storyline.
He said: “I think the character is well-remembered and people are generally very nice, very complimentary, and long may that continue.
“If the question was put in front of me then I’d have to think about it.”

Michael Sarnoski was urged to have CGI cats in A Quiet Place: Day One

OHMYGOSSIP — Michael Sarnoski was urged to use CGI instead of real cats in ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’
The filmmaker’s vision for the movie saw a feline named Frodo take centre stage and he admitted when he first turned in a script – which was co-written by franchise creator John Krasinski – movie bosses didn’t expect him to want to use real animals because they thought it would be too hard a task.
He told The Hollywood Reporter: “The initial reaction was, ‘Okay, we’re going to have a computer-generated cat. I guess we can pull that off.’
“But then I said, ‘No, I really want to do all the cat stuff for real and not ever do a CG cat.’
“Everyone was like, ‘We’ll see about that.’
“But thankfully, we managed it with incredible cat trainers and incredible cat performers. Everyone assumed wouldn’t be able to pull it off the old fashioned way, but I’m really happy we did.”
Despite pushing for animal actors, Michael admitted he was “nervous” his idea wouldn’t pay off, but that only made things more exciting.
He said: “The things that make me the most nervous are also the things that most excite me.
“There is something about, ‘What a stupid idea to put a cat in every scene when you’re going to do these huge set pieces. Do you really want to tie your hands that way?’
“But sometimes in those limitations you find the most authenticity and the most fun.
“So, yeah, I was nervous. But I want to be nervous. I want to be not sure if an idea is going to work out. If everything feels safe, the audience is going to feel that and I’m going to be bored.”

Denis Villneuve’s next movie secures December 2026 release date

OHMYGOSSIP — Denis Villeneuve’s next “event film” will be released on 18 December, 2026.
The 56-year-old director hasn’t shared any details about his next project, but Warner Bros. have announced it will be getting a festive release and it hails from Legendary Entertainment, the home of his ‘Dune’ movies.
Denis previously stated the third instalment of the saga wasn’t likely to be his next film and he is known to have a nuclear war movie set up at Legendary, but sources told the Hollywood Reporter he may have had a change of heart.
Warner Bros.’ announcement also included the release of an untitled movie in Legendary’s MonsterVerse series will hit cinemas on 26 March, 2027, taking the place of a project from Locksmith Animation that has now been removed from the studio’s calendar.
Earlier this month, Denis admitted he was “disappointed” that ‘Dune: Part Two’ remains the highest-grossing film of 2024, three months on from its release.
Speaking after receiving the Academy Icon Award at the Canadian Screen Awards, he said: “I think we need movies that are theatrical experiences, that will fully embrace the power of the theatre, and I’m not just talking about ‘Dune 2’. Of course I’m talking about many movies.
“A movie like ‘Civil War’, for instance, is a strong example of a movie that absolutely used the power of the theatre. I was lucky that ‘Part 2’ did reach the audience, I wish it would happen more often, honestly.
“I’m disappointed to still be number one… I hope soon that there will be other successes at the box office. I hope, sooner or later, that this summer box office will be much better.”
The ‘Sicario’ director used his speech to urge Canada to protect the film industry at a time when “culture” is more important than ever.
He said: “We must never take things for granted. Canada must keep encouraging its artists in times when even the notion of truth is challenged.
“Culture is more than ever fundamental for the health of our democracy, and cinema being the most powerful art form ever created. I know I’m biased, I’m sorry.
“And we must take care of our film industry. Make it grow and make it flourish. We will all benefit from it.”

Eli Roth aimed to satisfy his inner child with ‘insane’ Borderlands

OHMYGOSSIP — Eli Roth set out to make an “insane” film with ‘Borderlands’.
The 52-year-old director has helmed the new movie that is based on the video game franchise of the same name and explained that he wanted to create a film that would appeal to his childhood self.
Eli told Total Film magazine: “I wanted to make a big, fun, insane film – but something with the beauty and style of a film like ‘The Fifth Element’, or even ‘Barbarella’.
“It’s world-building, which is something that I’ve always wanted to do. If I was 12 years old and I went to see ‘Borderlands’, I’d think this was the greatest movie ever.”
The picture – which is slated for release in August – features an all-star cast headed by Cate Blanchett as Lilith and Roth was delighted with the way the ‘Tar’ actress got under the skin of the protagonist.
The ‘Thanksgiving’ filmmaker said: “Cate and I have a very similar taste in movies; she loves ‘The Evil Dead’.
“She really got the character. We thought of The Man With No Name, Dirty Harry, Ellen Ripley and Snake Plissken. We thought of great, fun, badass characters – and that’s how I see Cate.
“I know everyone wants to see her waving the conductor stick, but I want her wielding a flamethrower!”
Eli also praised Kevin Hart, who portrays Roland, for making the switch from comedy to action in the movie.
The director explained: “The thing about Kevin is, he’s never killed anyone in a movie before.
“We talked about this being his transition. You think of Eddie Murphy going from ’48 Hrs.’ to ‘Beverly Hills Cop’, where suddenly he’s a badass. And Will Smith going from ‘Fresh Prince (of Bel-Air)’ to ‘Bad Boys’. Kevin is an amazing fighter, and he’s in sick shape.”

Sian Welby welcomes a baby girl

OHMYGOSSIP — Sian Welby has given birth to a baby girl.
The 37-year-old presenter – who is engaged to Jake Beckett – has revealed via social media that she’s welcomed a baby girl called Ruby.
Alongside a series of photos of her newborn daughter, Sian wrote on Instagram: “Our little Ruby [love-heart emojis] (sic)”
Sian has shared various behind-the-scenes snaps of her baby girl. However, the presenter – who co-hosts ‘Capital Breakfast’ with Jordan North and Chris Stark – hasn’t revealed when she gave birth to Ruby.
Sian embarked on her maternity leave earlier this month, and the broadcaster previously discussed her pregnancy on air.
She said on ‘Capital Breakfast’: “I’m at that point where I’m 38 weeks – I’ve got 11 days to go.
“Before I go off on baby leave, I do want to share one thing with everyone because I’ve decided that ‘Capital Breakfast’, it doesn’t have listeners, we are a family and I have told my nearest and dearest what me and my partner Jake are having.
“And I know you are all invested. So I’m going to tell you what I’m having … it’s a girl!”
Jordan, 34, subsequently offered some words of encouragement to his co-host.
He said: “You’re both going to be great parents. You’re going to be the best mum and he’s going to be the best dad.”
Sian actually announced her pregnancy back in February.
The presenter joked at the time that she’d been through a lot of “stress” trying to keep the news to herself.
She said on air: “I’ve got a bit of an announcement for you! I’m pregnant!
“I don’t know how I’ve managed to keep it from you for so long. It’s not a joke, it’s not a joke!
“The stress I’ve gone through trying to pretend not to be drinking. The lies, the deceit, the mocktails! I couldn’t wait to tell you.”

Tom Hardy doesn’t always read film scripts

OHMYGOSSIP — Tom Hardy doesn’t always read the script before working on a movie.
The 46-year-old actor explained that he sometimes prefers to learn about his character and get a sense of what is expected of him by having conversations with the director.
Speaking to Collider, Tom said: “Sometimes I don’t read a script. I’ll ask somebody to tell me the story, like the director, because the case file of the script will corroborate what the director is really excited about, what they’re trying to say, or what they’re trying to do with a piece or a character.
“Sometimes now, I find that I prefer conversations with directors or writers, or the polycross of the two, to understand what it is that they’re trying to do or what they want to do with the character.”
The ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ star added: “That may sound, perhaps, as if I don’t care. It’s quite the opposite, actually.
“Sometimes the case file doesn’t corroborate what the director is trying to get at, or the writer.”
Tom plays motorcycle club leader Johnny Davis in the new movie ‘The Bikeriders’ and explained that he had to adjust to riding Harley-Davidsons from the 1950s and 60s during his work on the picture.
He said: “I like bikes. I’m not particularly crazy on them, so I don’t know that many super skills or anything, but I can get on one and move it about.
“The difference between the bikes that I ride is that they have brakes. Not that Harleys don’t have brakes – they do – but these were sort of antiquarian bikes in many ways. They were there originally in 1958, 1960, 1963, ’67. All the Harleys that were in the movie were timepieces.
“They were incredible for that very reason, but they have fundamental differences to the bikes that I ride today.”

Lupita Nyong’o talks Quiet Place ending

OHMYGOSSIP — Lupita Nyong’o says ending ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ with Nina Simone’s ‘Feeling Good’ was a perfect choice.
In the horror prequel, Lupita’s cancer-stricken character Sam makes a striking choice at the end of the movie and Lupita believes writer-director Michael Sarnoski made the perfect choice of song to accompany the ending.
She told USA Today: “It’s tragic, but it’s also satisfying that Sam is going out on her own terms. Nina Simone has an inbuilt melancholy in her voice, and it comes across in that song. It’s in complete contrast to what she’s saying – the words are, ‘And I’m feeling good.’ I think it treads that fine line between a cry of grief and euphoria somehow.
“You want the protagonist to have agency and you want her to triumph. The filmmakers asked themselves, ‘How can this moment be a triumph?’ But I think the song really sends it to that place.”
However, Sarnoski admitted the song wasn’t his first choice, and he initially considered the more upbeat ‘New York Groove’ from glam-rock band Hello.
He said: “It was a little on the nose. I wanted to take something that seemed hopeless and actually make it really joyful. We tried a few songs to see what fit that moment, and Nina Simone just worked really well.”
Although the movie features memorable performances from Lupita and Joseph Quinn, fans have quickly taken Sam’s cat Frodo into their hearts.
Sarnoski said: “Once I landed on Frodo, I knew it had to be that. It just made sense for a little nod to this journey they’re taking together.
“I always imagined him as this savvy street cat that Sam found in her younger days in New York and then raised. This image of her walking through destroyed New York City with a cat just seemed perfect. Also, knowing that a cat would be one of the few animals that might have a shot at surviving in the ‘Quiet Place’ world because they can stalk and sneak around. I don’t think a dog would do so great.”

Shirley Ballas blasts split speculation

OHMYGOSSIP — Shirley Ballas has blasted speculation she has split with partner Danny Taylor.
The 63-year-old ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ judge and her 50-year-old toyboy are still going strong despite calling off their engagement.
Shirley told The Mirror: “Danny and I are still together contrary to anything you might read. Who knows [if we’ll get married].”
The pair started dating in 2019 and got engaged in 2021, before calling the engagement off last year.
Shirley married her dance partner Sammy Stopford in 1978 when she was 18, but they separated five years later.
She went on to tie the knot with dancer Corky Ballas, 63, in 1985, but they divorced in 2007.
The former couple share son Mark, 38, together.
Meanwhile, Shirley previously insisted she would not wed again.
Speaking on Alan Carr’s ‘Life’s a Beach’ podcast, she said: “I was in a long-term relationship and he finished with me two days before I went on a cruise. I just remember being in the Waikiki bar with my mother and I was whining and crying and she gave me a huge slap across my face… and said, ‘You will not ruin my holiday, get over yourself.’ I think I was the most miserable on the biggest event that I had prepared for my mother. Two marriages, an engagement, two long-term relationships later and I will not be getting married again. I’ve made the decision.”

Chanelle Hayes ties the knot

OHMYGOSSIP — Chanelle Hayes is married.
The former ‘Big Brother’ star tied the knot with fiancé Dan Bingham in a stunning wedding ceremony on Saturday (29.06.24), two years after getting engaged.
Speaking in May 2022 after they got engaged, a source told OK! magazine: “She’s been dreaming of this for such a long time.
“Chanelle has really been through it when it comes to relationships and this time it really feels like she’s found The One.’
“She’s already looking into wedding plans and can’t wait to finally get married – she’s been dreaming of this for such a long time.”
Chanelle, 36, shares son Blakely, 12, with her ex-partner Matthew Bates and she also has has Frankie, five, with Edward Oates.
Meanwhile, Chanelle revealed that she was “hungover” and “looked like a dog’s dinner” when Dan popped the question.
She said: ” I was in my dressing gown, hungover, looking like a dog’s dinner. Would you care to elaborate on that, Dan?!”
In the joint interview, Dan explained that his initial idea was to take Chanelle – who has moved away from reality TV to become a nurse – away on holiday but couldn’t make it work with her studies.
He told New! magazine: “I had plans to take her away, doing something really nice, but we just couldn’t get the timing right with studies, work, and the kids. It was the day after my 40th birthday and I came downstairs to 40 different presents all lined up. Then I grabbed the ring so there was one extra surprise – just for her.”
However, Chanelle admitted that despite her appearance, the proposal was “perfect” and “always knew” the pair would get engaged eventually.
She explained: “He said, ‘They say life begins at 40, and I want to spend the rest of mine with you.’ It was perfect. I wouldn’t have had it any other way I’ve always known we’d get married.
“We’d chatted about it before but I had no idea I’d get proposed to while chilling in my aqua blue velour pyjamas, with a strip lash hanging off my face like a moustache, feeling shaky from the night before. I did not foresee that, but I always knew it would happen one day.”

Joe Swash and Stacey Solomon don’t share a bed

OHMYGOSSIP — Joe Swash and Stacey Solomon no longer share a bed.
The couple have son Rex, five, and daughters Rose, two, and 15-month-old Belle together, while Stacey has Leighton, 12, and Zachary, 16, and Joe has Harry, 16, from previous relationships and they admitted having “three kids in four years” has changed their sleeping arrangements.
Speaking on ‘Celebrity Gogglebox’, after watching a clip from ‘The Nevermets’, Joe, 42, said: “We used to have pillow talk, didn’t we?”
Stacey replied: “We used to sleep in bed together, do you remember that? Before we had three kids in four years!”
Joe then mimicked Stacey as he said: ”I’ll go in Rex’s bed with the baby, all right?” and Stacey answered: “It’s what happens, innit babe?’
Meanwhile, Stacey, 34, recently admitted she might one day decide to become a stay-at-home mum.
Speaking on the ‘Glad We Had This Chat’ podcast, she told host Caroline Hirons: “I’m a phenomenal mum. I’m done with mum guilt. If you’re the mum who loves to be out at work, and I’m the mum who’s like, oh, I love playing at home. They’re both good mums. I don’t understand why one is better than the other in my opinion.
“Whatever phase of life I’m at, I might be this mum right now. But in two years time, if, let’s say, I’ve decided to stay at home and never work again, I might be like, I want to go back to work. Does that make me a bad mum? No, no, it makes me a human that my children can see that I am still a human being. Not just mum.
“I’m not a mythical creature with no feelings and no ambitions.”
The ‘Loose Women’ panellist was then asked if she has ever thought about having more children and failed to give a definitive answer but explained that Belle was a complete surprise anyway.
She said: “Oh, no. I have. I have and I haven’t [thought about more kids.] But even we were shocked at Belle because we weren’t planning to have another baby. We were definitely planning a break.
“Rex and Rose were only a couple of years apart and Rose was like six months old. But yeah, well, apparently you only need to have sex once and you’ll get pregnant.”

Martin Roberts for Strictly Come Dancing?

OHMYGOSSIP — Martin Roberts is set to compete in ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.
The ‘Homes Under The Hammer’ host, 60, has reportedly been approached by show bosses about taking to the dancefloor in the upcoming series.
A source told The Daily Star newspaper: “Martin is just waiting to sign his contract. It’ll be a dream come true for him – and a delight for viewers.”
And, Martin hinted at the news at the recent TRIC awards.
He told the newspaper: “I’m like a Ninja Mutant Hero Turtle – I just eat pizzas. Domino’s Mighty Meat. I’m the stomach of Domino’s, not the face of it.
“I should worry about what I eat because I had a health scare. I need to look after myself better.
“And certainly if I get this TV show later in the year. I’ll have to get super fit.”
Meanwhile, two CBBC stars are also in talks for ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.
Blue Peter presenter Shini Muthukrishnan, 22, is set to face off against CBBC presenter Evie Pickerill, 32, in a bid to land a coveted spot in the BBC dance competition and Shini is said to be the frontrunner.
A source told The Mail On Sunday newspaper: “There can really only be one from the world of CBBC so there is now a full-on battle, a war.
“A place on ‘Strictly’ for those on children’s TV is seen as the golden goose. It’s a way of getting them out of that genre of TV and turning themselves into household names.
“Many of their agents have approached ‘Strictly’s casting boss but have been usurped by Shini.”
