Marvelous Mrs Maisel scoops comedy SAGs

OHMYGOSSIP — Rachel Brosnahan paid tribute to the extras who work on ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ as she picked up a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award on Sunday (27.01.19).
The 28-year-old actress beat off competition from her co-star Alex Borstein, as well as Alison Brie (‘GLOW’), and ‘Grace and Frankie’ stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin to take the statue for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series and admitted her win was “beyond [her] wildest dreams as she praised those who work on the show.
She said: “I have wanted to be an actor for as long as I can remember and to be able to count you all in this room as my peers let alone to stand up on this stage is beyond my wildest dreams. Thank you so much. I have a habit of getting very flustered up here and forgetting to thank a lot of vitally important people to my team.”
After thanking her publicists, lawyers, and co-stars, she then said: “Our two often unsung background actors who work the same hours as us and share the same union as us. I couldn’t be luckier to be a part of this amazing group of artists.”
Rachel later returned to the stage at the Shrine Auditorium on Sunday, as the show was also named Best Comedy Series Ensemble.
And that’s not all as her co-star Tony Shalhoub also picked up Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series, much to his astonishment as he admitted he never expected to triumph over fellow nominees, ‘The Kominsky Method’s Alan Arkin and Michael Douglas and Barry’s Bill Hader and Henry Winkler.
He said: “OK, I have nothing prepared. For obvious reasons. Look at this category.
“I just want to start by saying the greatest honor of my life is to be nominated in the same category as Alan Arkin who has long been an idol of mine and I’m happy to say a friend. But I think he was the reason I wanted to become an actor in the first place.
“That said, I want to thank everyone at Amazon. Jen Salke, everybody.
“Especially James Sterling in Legal Affairs, and not just because I’m in the middle of a renegotiation. Thank you to my incredible cast and crew and my beautiful wife Brooke. All of you, I thank you.”

She also paid tribute to her and John’s young daughters, Hazel, four, and two-year-old Violet.

“To my wife and daughter, and to Peter Farrelly, I sincerely appreciate the opportunity.”

Darren Criss hopes SAG winning role created positive change

OHMYGOSSIP — Darren Criss paid tribute to those affected by the “tragedy” depicted in ‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story’ as he picked up his Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award on Sunday (27.01.19).
The 31-year-old actor was honoured for his portrayal of killer Andrew Cunanan at the ceremony and admitted he hoped he’d been able to “create a positive change” with his performance by highlighting “social issues”.
He said: “I find it appropriate that this statuette is sort of choosing between which masks to use.
“The character that I played, Andrew Cunanan, unfortunately used masks to destroy things. So as an actor, my goal was to hopefully create something positive; to use masks to create a positive change.
“So for any of the families and friends that are still affected by the destruction that he wrought.
“I hope that they know that our goal was not to make a spectacle of their tragedy, but to create a positive dialogue about social issues and bring to justice things that were in the shadows.”
Darren – who beat out competition from Antonio Banderas in ‘Genius: Picasso’, Hugh Grant in ‘A Very English Scandal’, Sir Anthony Hopkins in ‘King Lear’, and Bill Pullman in ‘The Sinner’ to take the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries – also thanked his co-stars in the FX series.
He added on stage at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles: “If there was a category — I hope there will be in the future — for ensemble in a miniseries, I know they would certainly be here.
“You lifted me up, on- and off-screen, and you made this an experience that I will cherish forever. This is a high that will last a lifetime.”
Meanwhile, Patricia Arquette won the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries accolade and used her speech to call out production companies for not paying overtime or meal penalties.
The ‘Escape at Dannemora’ actress said: “I thought you were saying Patricia Clarkson so I was like, yeah!’
“Thank you to Ben Stiller for your incredible support, thank you for letting me explore the character of Tilly.
“Thank you to Benicio Del Toro and Paul Dano – you are an inspiration.
“Some production companies are not paying overtime or meal penalties, so start looking at your paperwork – actors depend on that money to survive
“Thank you Robert Mueller and everyone working to ensure we have sovereignty for the United States of America.”
Patricia beat out Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson from ‘Sharp Objects’, ‘Maniac’ star Emma Stone, and Penelope Cruz for ‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story’ to take the honour.

Jason Bateman reassured by win

OHMYGOSSIP — Jason Bateman found it “reassuring” to win a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award on Sunday (27.01.19).
The 50-year-old star scored his first win after eight nominations for Outstanding Performance By a Male Actor in a Drama Series for his role in ‘Ozark’ and reassured fellow actors who are currently not where they want to be in their careers that they are “just a job away” from major success.
Jason – who triumphed over Sterling K. Brown (‘This Is Us’), Joseph Fiennes (‘The Handmaid’s Tale’), John Krasinsky (‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’) and Bob Odenkirk (‘Better Call Saul’) – said: “This is…reassuring. Truly, though, I’m glad I won tonight.
“I was lucky enough to start coming to this show a few years ago, but there were a lot of years where I wasn’t.
“And I’m sure that there are a lot of us in this room could say the same thing, and I know there’s a lot of our fellow union members that are not here or are not working as frequently as they might want to. And that was certainly the case for me for a long time…
“For me it was ‘Arrested Development’, and I’m very, very grateful to that show.
“So I just want to say to the people that are at home and not working as frequently as they want, you’re just one job away. You’re plenty talented. Hang in there.”
Meanwhile, ‘Killing Eve’ star Sandra Oh thanked her “fellow creative dreamers” as she picked up Outstanding Performance By a Female Actor in a Drama Series accolade.
Speaking on stage at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium, she praised fellow nominees Julia Garner and Laura Linney for ‘Ozark’, Elisabeth Moss for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and Robin Wright for ‘House of Cards’ for their “beautiful” work, and then thanked her co-stars and others who worked on ‘Killing Eve’.
She added: “I’d like to thank my mentor, Kim Gillingham and the fellow creative dreamers, I am not the actor I am without the work that we share…
“Jamie Fox pulled me aside in 2006 and said, ‘Keep going’ “.
Rounding out the TV drama wins, ‘This Is Us’ scooped Best Ensemble in a Drama Series for the second year in a row, beating out ‘The Americans’, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, ‘Better Call Saul’ and ‘Ozark’ to take the honour.
Accepting the accolade with her co-stars, Mandy Moore said: “To Dan Fogelman our fearless leader, we love you so much, and our crew – the best in the business.”

Glenn Close celebrates the power of film

OHMYGOSSIP — Glenn Close emphasised the “power” of film as she accepted the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture on Sunday (27.01.19).
The 71-year-old actress – who scooped the honour ahead of Emily Blunt (‘Mary Poppins Returns’), Olivia Colman (‘The Favourite’), Lady Gaga (A Star is Born’) and Melissa McCarthy (‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’) – gave a passionate speech calling for “empathy and understanding” when she took to the stage at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium to accept the statuette for her role in ‘The Wife’.
She said: “Oh my gosh, I am so proud to be in this union. I am so proud to receive this award from my fellow actors and I think of all of us sitting in the room, all of you watching on TV, all of you who haven’t had the chances we had and I salute you with this.
“One of the most powerful things we have as two human beings is two eyes looking into two eyes and film is the only art form that allows us the close-up and it substitutes for real life two eyes looking into two eyes.
“I think we have to remember how powerful that is in a world that is consumed with different size screens, that all we have are two human eyes looking into two other eyes, that will give us empathy and understanding.”
Glenn went on to thank the “incredible” cast and crew who had worked on the movie and gave a special shout-out to her co-star Jonathan Pryce.
She said: “My beautiful Jonathan Pryce, you can’t have a wife without a husband, he was a magnificent collaborator.
“Thank you for honouring me with this, I honour you, I’m so proud to be a part of you.”

Matthew McConaughey reveals the worst rom-com of his career

OHMYGOSSIP — Matthew McConaughey thinks ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ is the worst rom-com he’s ever made.
The Oscar-winning actor – who has starred in a string of rom-coms during his career, including ‘The Wedding Planner’, ‘Failure to Launch’ and ‘Ghosts of Girlfriends Past’ – has admitted that the 2003 movie is the bottom of the list of rom-coms he’s made.
Asked to reveal his own list of his worst rom-com movies, Matthew said: “Let’s go ‘How to Lose a Guy’ … then let’s go ‘Failure to Launch’ then ‘The Wedding Planner’.”
‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ – which was based on a cartoon book of the same name by Michele Alexander and Jeannie Long – was actually a significant box-office success.
And even though he didn’t like the movie, Matthew admitted it continues to reward him.
He told ‘Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen’: “‘So How to Lose a Guy’ … that film has been my greatest mailbox money of any film.
“It is always on and there’s always this great little cheque that shows up in the mail from ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’. I did that however many years ago!”
Meanwhile, Matthew recently claimed that Anne Hathaway is one of his few true friends in the movie business.
Matthew, 49, reunited with Anne to star in the Steven Knight-directed thriller ‘Serenity’, having previously worked with her on ‘Interstellar’.
He said: “For me, this business and relations at work are transitory.
“By design you’re closer with most people at the time when you’re working because it’s intense. You’re working together and then you go on a press tour and you’re around each other and you’re with each other’s families and then, poof, you go away. And I don’t have that many relationships that I maintain.
“Anne and I don’t call each other every week, (but) we do still keep in touch.”

Octavia Spencer says LeBron James helped her secure pay parity

OHMYGOSSIP — Octavia Spencer says LeBron James is responsible for her getting pay parity for ‘Madam C.J. Walker’.
The 46-year-old actress has revealed that the LA Lakers basketball star helped her to earn what she deserved for starring in the Netflix series, which tells the story of America’s first black self-made millionaire.
Octavia shared: “I have to say, when I was negotiating my deal for ‘Madam C.J.’, LeBron James had to intervene. So we need all our male counterparts to be in the fight with us.”
LeBron, 34, served as an executive producer on the project.
And Octavia feels it’s importance to be open and honest about pay in order to address the current imbalance between male and female stars.
She told IndieWire: “I think my goal is to make sure that all women of colour get equal pay, and all women get equal pay.
“The only way to do it is to have these conversations, to talk numbers with your co-stars.”
In 2018, Octavia teamed up with Jessica Chastain to call for equal pay on an unnamed Netflix project.
But the Oscar-winning star feels more needs to be done in order to tackle the problem.
She said: “Jessica and I stood together, and that was interesting that she would take that position – well, I mean, she is Jessica Chastain – but we also need advocates and allies in negotiating.”
Meanwhile, Jessica previously insisted she “isn’t afraid” to speak out against gender inequality.
She said: “It’s important to speak out and amplify our imbalance in the movie-making industry. I have experienced no backlash from anyone since making my views public.
“I certainly wasn’t afraid to do it. Glad I did it. It’s taken a long time to get this far, and I’m out front for those who cannot speak out. We must turn this around.”

Didi Conn exits Dancing on Ice

OHMYGOSSIP — Didi Conn has been eliminated from ‘Dancing on Ice’.
The 67-year-old actress has become the third contestant to leave this year’s show after losing in the dreaded skate-off against Saara Aalto.
Following her exit, Didi – who is best-known for playing Frenchie in ‘Grease’ – told her dance partner Łukasz Rozycki: “I have enjoyed my partner, the best in the world. And he’s a good cook, too.”
All four judges voted in favour of keeping Saara on ‘Dancing on Ice’, with Jason Gardiner saying that Didi’s exit meant the programme was losing a little bit of its “heart”.
Didi also revealed she plans to continue skating, even though she’s been eliminated from the ITV show.
Asked whether she’ll take to the ice in the future, Didi explained: “Oh sure, I have to come back at the end, right?”
Earlier in the show, Gemma Collins suffered a painful-looking fall during the final moments of her routine.
The outspoken star had to fight back tears as she listened to the review of her performance by the ‘Dancing on Ice’ judges.
Despite her embarrassing tumble, head judges Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean praised Gemma for the improvements she’s made over the last week.
And Jason – who was involved in an on-air argument with Gemma last week – also praised her performance.
He said: “When you come in and apply yourself, and when you drop The GC you improve and you did.”

Vanessa Hudgens: I love being the centre of attention

OHMYGOSSIP — Vanessa Hudgens “loves being the centre of attention”.
The 30-year-old actress – who stars as Maureen Johnson in ‘Rent: Live’, an upcoming TV production of the Broadway musical – has revealed she can relate to her character’s approach to life, admitting she relishes attention.
She said: “It’s been so much fun finding Maureen within myself because she is loud and she loves being the centre of attention, and I am a performer.
“I love having all eyes on me. She expresses herself in a way that is unique to her own, and she’s an artist, and I feel like that’s what I aspire to be like as well.”
The brunette beauty also admitted she loved working with Jordan Fisher on ‘Rent: Live’.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Vanessa shared: “I feel like we both have such a love for musical theatre and a love for ‘Rent’ even before we came to it, [and] it really just translates.”
Meanwhile, Vanessa recently revealed that Jennifer Lopez has become a surrogate “mamma” to her since they worked together on ‘Second Act’.
The high-profile duo developed a strong bond while filming the romantic comedy.
Vanessa explained: “[Jennifer] is the queen. She’s the O.G. of rom-com; she starred in my favourite [films] growing up.
“When I came in to do camera tests with her, I immediately felt this insane connection.
“I felt like we got to a point where we could be in a scene, and we were talking telepathically, where she’d be trying to tell me something, and I’d just go with it. I’d be like, ‘Are you trying to tell me this because I feel like you are?’ And she’d say, ‘Yes, baby.’ I’d be like, ‘Oh my God, I totally read your mind!’
“But seriously, not only was it a fun, exciting, iconic experience, but I also got to connect with someone that I admire in a real and deep way.”

Alan Alda on importance of acting

OHMYGOSSIP — Alan Alda hailed the important role actors can play “when culture is divided” at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday (27.01.19).
The 82-year-old actor received a standing ovation as he took to the stage at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium to accept a Lifetime Achievement award from Tom Hanks and spoke of how “proud” he is to be a part of his profession and explained how he felt he and his peers have a responsibility to introduce audiences to different perspectives.
He said: “It’s really hard to describe to you what it feels like to look out and see my fellow actors, my colleagues, my heroes. To welcome me up here like this is an extraordinary feeling.
“This comes at a time when I had a chance to look back at my life and to think about what it’s meant to be an actor and I see more than ever now how proud I am to be a member of our brotherhood and sisterhood of actors.
“When we get a chance to act, it’s our job — at least in part — to get inside a character’s head and to search for a way to see a life from that person’s point of view. Another person’s vision of the world and then to let an audience experience that.
“It may never have been more urgent than to see the world through another person’s eyes than when a culture is divided so sharply. Actors can help, at least a little bit, just by doing what we do. And the nice part is it’s fun to do it.”
And the ‘M*A*S*H’ actor urged actors to “stay playful” and keep having “fun” with their work.
He added: “So my wish for all of us is — let’s stay playful, let’s have fun and let’s keep searching. It can’t solve everything, but it wouldn’t hurt.”
He concluded his speech by thanking SAG-AFTRA and urged every actor to honour the union contract.
He added: “I honour our beloved [agent] Toni Howard. I share this with everybody in the room.”
Before getting on stage, Alan’s ‘Bridge of Spies’ co-star Tom praised his friend – whose real name is Alphonso D’Abruzzo – for his career choices.
He said: “A career is measured by different yard sticks. Quality being the first. There’s longevity, as well, but most important, I think perhaps, is how an actor’s choices reflect the time or the tenor of our troubled world and of our human natures.
“The actor we honour tonight for his life achievements is worthy then not just for his decades of work and praiseworthy credits, but for how he’s shown us all who we are and what we all can be.”
He went on to praise the ‘Aviator’ actor’s various accomplishments, including on stage, screen and on TV, noting he was the first to win Emmy Awards for acting, writing and directing.
He added: “There are his passions for philosophy and for his philanthropy. There is a woman named Arlene, three kids, two memoirs, a cackle of a laugh and a quest in both his life and his work that is guided by ethos.
“You cannot be too one-sided or only half experienced. Alphonso D’Abruzzo, tonight, for decades, for a lifetime, we have been lucky to have watched the former Mr. D’Abruzzo ply his craft and tonight, we celebrate our good fortune and a life’s labor of Alan Alda.”

Lily-Rose Depp: Acting is my only outlet to let go

OHMYGOSSIP — Lily-Rose Depp loves acting because it’s the only way she can “let go”.
The 19-year-old actress – the daughter of Hollywood star Johnny Depp and his ex-partner Vanessa Paradis – has admitted that she enjoys playing characters because it is her “only” escapism.
On why she likes acting, Lily told Jalouse Magazine “Maybe because it’s the only outlet that gives me a chance to let go.”
Lily-Rose – whose next big role in ‘The King’ will see her star alongside Timothee Chalamet and Robert Pattinson – also admitted that she prefers to stay out of the spotlight “in this business”.
She said: “For me, in this business, it doesn’t make any sense to reveal oneself too much.”
The ‘Planetarium’ star was born in Paris, but split her time between the French capital and Los Angeles, when her parents separated in 2012.
Lily-Rose says that when she speaks in French, she feels like her personality shifts and she becomes “more mysterious”.
Asked about being fluent in both French and English, she said: “You know, depending on the language I speak, my voice and personality slightly change. I think I even sound a bit more mysterious in French!”
Meanwhile, when quizzed on her mother, she added that she is “the most beautiful woman in the world.”
The ‘Tusk’ star previously admitted that she has to “work twice as hard” to prove herself as an actress because of her famous actor father.
She said: “A lot of people think I’m only acting because of my dad, that I have not had to work as hard to be seen or recognised in the industry, so I think because of that it makes me want to work twice as hard to prove to everyone that I’m not just doing this because it’s easy to do. I’m not just doing it because it runs in the family.”

Anne Hathaway changed after dying hair blonde

OHMYGOSSIP — Anne Hathaway has more of a free spirit since dying her hair blonde.
The 36-year-old actress switched up her hair colour for her role in ‘Serenity’ and and admits she “felt funnier” as a blonde.
She told W magazine: “I felt funnier! I don’t know why, but I just felt that I could be funnier while saying less. I know that doesn’t make any sense, but it was just – it’s nice. And it also made me want to do it more in life, like, just mess around with [my hair] and not get too fixed on anything.”
Meanwhile, Anne previously admitted she feels “very lucky” to have filmed ‘Serenity’ in Mauritius.
She explained: “We were going to film in the Bahamas up until a couple months before. All of a sudden we just got a call from Steven saying, ‘I found a place that is everything I dreamed up and more.’ It was Mauritius and you have the sea and you have the sugarcane and you have cliffs. And then you have these incredible people.”
Anne was blown away by what she witnessed during the shoot.
She added: “Now in Mauritius you’ll have a Hindu temple across from a mosque across from a church, on a very small island. Conventional thinking would say that they would be at each other’s throats all the time but the attitude of Mauritius is ‘celebrate each other. Celebrate each other’s differences’. So to be on this place that is so gorgeous, where it rains every day so there’s a million rainbows every day, and to be dealing with an energy level of people whose national currency is tolerance, it was an incredible experience. We felt very lucky to be there.”

will.i.am will eventually lose hearing

OHMYGOSSIP — will.i.am will eventually lose his hearing.
The ‘Scream & Shout’ hitmaker is battling tinnitus and says it will eventually leave him with irreversible “proper loss” of hearing.`
He said: “I’m 43. When I went to the doctor and got an ear test, they said, ‘Your ears are that of someone a lot older.’ In 2007, 2013 and this year, I got all my frequency tests and the curve … it’s proper loss.”
And the 43-year-old singer has made changes to his diet and is “violently vegan”.
He told The Sunday Times magazine: “I’m violently vegan. I’m fighting for a healthier me and a healthier planet. I started realising … urgh, I was eating, like, rotted animal lactate … that came from freaking cow’s t**t? That’s disgusting. We operate on frequencies that are wireless. We put satellites that orbit the planet. Why are we acting like freaking savage predators still? Haven’t we evolved?”
Meanwhile, will previously revealed his decision to embrace a plant-based diet and cut out animal products after being horrified to be given medication from his doctor, and claimed his new eating habits, as well as visiting a wellness retreat, left him not needing to consider the pills any more.
He said previously: “When you go to the doctor and he says, ‘You have high cholesterol and blood pressure and I’m going to provide you with pills’, you’re like, ‘Pills? I’m 42. Why do I need to be taking the pills that my uncle takes? He’s 60-plus.’… It took me 10 days to drop my cholesterol. I lost 8lb, my blood pressure came down. In 10 days, my skin cleared up and my breathing was right.”

Bradley Cooper: I’ll be very emotional if I win an Oscar

OHMYGOSSIP — Bradley Cooper will be “very emotional” if he wins an Oscar.
The 44-year-old actor is up for the Best Actor prize for his performance as Jack Maine in ‘A Star Is Born’ – which he also directed – and has admitted it would be a big moment for him if he picks up the prestigious accolade at the annual awards ceremony on February 25.
Speaking to ‘Extra’, he said: “If that were to happen, it’d be incredible. It’d be unbelievable. I’d be very emotional.”
The 2018 critically-acclaimed remake of the classic musical romantic drama is up for seven awards in total, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Cooper – who now has a total of seven Academy Award nominations to his name, and has previously been nominated for Best Actor for ‘American Sniper’ in 2015 and ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ in 2013 – missed out on a nod for Best Director for his directing debut for ‘A Star Is Born’.
However, his co-star Lady Gaga, who played his love interest Ally and is up for Best Actress, recently admitted he is the “best director in her eyes”, despite his Oscar snub.
The 32-year-old singer-and-actress insists she and the rest of the cast all appreciate what Cooper inspired them to achieve with the film.
She said: “Well, you know, you never know what’s going to happen, but at the end of the day, he knows that he’s the best director in my eyes and in all of our eyes as his cast. I know that he’s so happy that we’ve all been nominated and that the film was recognised and we all feel really, really beyond elated for the recognition.”
Cooper himself didn’t appear disappointed by the Best Director snub and when the shortlist was announced, he said that he is “so grateful” for the recognition the movie has received.
He said: “Everyone who worked on this film truly risked putting themselves out there – in the hope that in doing so people will connect and feel something deep and personal – the way films have made me feel since I was a kid.
“When I got this opportunity I knew I had to risk it all because I may never get another chance. So to be here today in a place where people who have seen the film are talking about how it makes them feel, something deep – that simple human thing – that we need each other, and for the Academy to recognise that I just am so grateful.”
