Cherylee Houston on Bryan Cranston’s disabled character in The Upside

OHMYGOSSIP — Cherylee Houston says Bryan Cranston’s portrayal of a disabled person in ‘The Upside’ could be a “problem” because his “opinion” of his character’s disability is “very new”.
The ‘Coronation Street’ actress – who has been in a wheelchair for 20 years in real life, and plays Izzy Armstrong on the soap – has suggested that society might therefore see this “as a negative” and see “all the bad bits”.
Speaking to the Huffington Post about about the actor’s role as Phillip, a quadriplegic, in the movie, she explained: “We have this thing in our community of ‘nothing about us without us’, so therefore, if you feel you can’t financially justify having us in the lead role then put us elsewhere.
“The problem is, he [Bryan] is coming from it as a non-disabled person, therefore his opinion of that disability is very new.
“That’s the point where society sees it as a negative [and] sees all the bad bits. As an actor, that will impact on your thought processes and your acting choices.”
While Cherylee, 44, acknowledged movies and TV shows sometimes need to cast a major name in such roles, she believes they need to find ways to make sure disabled actors still get opportunities on screen.
She added: “There are nuances that a non-disabled actor will never be able to put in or portray so what it’s perpetuating is society still getting this image of disability which isn’t based in disability.
“It’s based in a perception of what disability is, from a non-disabled point of view, which tends to be a negative or fearful one.”
Cherylee – who launched the Disabled Artists Networking Community (DANC) last year – said the benefit of using actors who actually live with disabilities means their performers won’t be focused on just one aspect of the roles.
She said: “I’ve been a wheelchair user for over 20 years so I’m so over it that I’m not playing that, I’m playing the character.”
Her work with DANC looks to help change the way the industry “embraces” disabled artists and performers.
She previously said: “This industry can change the way we’re treated in society. So if we can change the way this industry embraces us … then people won’t have to face the blocks we faced.”

‘The Greatest Showman’ star is set to star as Chani, the love interest for Timothee’s character Paul Atreides.
The plot sees villainous Baron Harkonnen (Skarsgard) and his nephew Glossu ‘Beast’ Rabban (Bautista), whose family once ruled desert planet Arrakis, battle Atreides as he leads a rebellion to restore his family’s reign of the planet which is the only source of the drug melange – also known as “the spice” – which is vital to space travel and the most sought after commodity in the universe.

Villeneuve, Mary Parent, and Cale Boyter will produce the project, and Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, Thomas Tull, and Kim Herbert will executive produce.
Legendary acquired the film and TV rights in 2016 after signing a deal with Herbert’s estate for his iconic tome.
The original 1984 movie featured Francesca Annis as Lady Jessica and Kyle MacLachlan as Atreides, whilst Sir Patrick Stewart and Sting also appeared in the film, which was directed by David Lynch.
Villeneuve previously admitted ‘Dune’ is his “dream project” as he was obsessed with the original film growing up.
He said: “I had been wanting to do sci-fi for a very long time; ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ is a movie that really impressed me as a teenager and also ‘Blade Runner’. ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ is also one of my favourites. I’m always looking for sci-fi material, and it’s difficult to find original and strong material that’s not just about weaponry. A long-standing dream of mine is to adapt ‘Dune’.”
Filming is due to commence in Budapest and Jordan in spring.

Dame Helen Mirren reveals royal reaction to her portrayal of the Queen

OHMYGOSSIP — Dame Helen Mirren has revealed Prince Harry and Prince William liked her acting performance as their grandmother Queen Elizabeth II.
The 73-year-old actress portrayed the British monarch in the acclaimed 2006 film which explored the queen and the Royal Family’s response to the shock death of the princes’ mother Princess Diana in 1997. Her work in the role earned Mirren the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Mirren has met various members of the Royal Family and although Prince Charles – the queen’s son and William and Harry’s father – avoided discussing the movie with her the two younger princes were “very cool about it”.

Caitlyn Jenner gets trademarks rejected

OHMYGOSSIP — Caitlyn Jenner has had a number of trademark applications rejected because of her famous name.
The ‘I Am Cait’ star had applied to register ‘Jenner Skincare’ and ‘Skincare By Jenner’, but has received a letter from the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO), which stated they were too similar to monikers already registered by her ex-wife Kris Jenner and their children Kylie and Kendall Jenner.
According to The Blast, who obtained a copy of the letter, the USPTO office made it clear that ‘Jenner Skincare’ could confuse customers into believing the rest of the family were associated with the products, especially because so many of Kris and her daughters’ registered trademarks are connected with beauty and skincare, citing ‘Kylie Cosmetics by Kylie Jenner’ as one example.
And the trademark attorney told Caitlyn that her proposed name was too similar to that of her ex-wife’s.
However, officials gave the 69-year-old former Olympian the greenlight to use ‘Caitlyn Jenner Skincare’ and ‘Skincare By Caitlyn Jenner’ because there was no scope for confusion.
Since transitioning, Caitlyn has become estranged from her ex Kris and her former stepchildren – including famous sister trio Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney Kardashian, and their brother Rob Kardashian – after passages in her 2017 memoir created a rift between them, with the Kardashians claiming their former stepfather had unfairly slammed their mother.
But Caitlyn still speaks warmly of the ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ stars, as she still counts them as her children, and says they’ve all “done so extremely well” in their lives.
She said: “Kimberly has been out there and she’s extremely smart – all my kids [are]. I have 10 kids and 14 grandchildren. All my kids have done so extremely well. The ones you don’t even see on camera are very successful.
“I’m so proud of my family … They are very entrepreneurial. All of them. They’ve done very well for themselves. They’ve used their celebrity status and the show to build businesses to be out there in the marketplace.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger praises Chris Pratt

OHMYGOSSIP — Arnold Schwarzenegger thinks Chris Pratt is “fantastic”.
The ‘Terminator’ actor’s daughter, Katherine Schwarzenegger, recently got engaged to the ‘Jurassic World’ star and her famous father couldn’t be happier for the couple.
He told US TV show ‘Extra’: “That was really fantastic. She is so happy, they both are so happy. As I said to him, he is such a likable guy. I love Chris — he’s fantastic.”
Katherine’s mother, Maria Shriver, recently revealed her 29-year-old daughter couldn’t be happier after Chris popped the question following a six-month romance.
Maria said: “She’s super happy and gave me super strict instructions not to talk about it … It’s not my moment.
“She wants to have her moment.”
Maria previously publicly congratulated the couple on their engagement via a comment on Instagram.
She wrote: “Congratulations to two loving, kind, caring, thoughtful, spiritual people. We are so happy for you. You are blessed, as is everyone who knows you. Yes, let’s go.”
Meanwhile, the 39-year-old actor – who has six-year-old son Jack with ex-wife Anna Faris – recently admitted he wants to have “lots of kids” with Katherine.
Asked about his future plans and ambitions, Chris said: “The future? Oh … Lots of kids. Maybe less time spent working, more time spent enjoying life.”
The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ star may be one of the most in-demand actors in the world but he still considers his home life to be his priority.
He said: “I always want to be that guy that works to live, not lives to work.
“I think [I want to spend] just a lot of time at the farm and a lot of time catching a lot of fish and seeing lots of sunsets.”

Kimmy Schmidt movie ‘definitely a possibility’ says Tina Fey

OHMYGOSSIP — Tina Fey has admitted that an ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ movie is “definitely a possibility” in the future.
After four seasons, the wacky Netflix sitcom has come to an end, but luckily for fans of the comedy show the programme’s co-creator Tina has revealed that although she can’t give away many details a film is definitely on the cards.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 48-year-old comedian and her co-writer Robert Carlock have been instructed by the streaming service to be “coy” about the potential big screen project but it is happening.
The series follows Ellie Kemper’s Kimmy, as she navigates her way through New York City after being rescued from an underground bunker where she’s been kept by an insane preacher for 15 years, forming an unlikely friendship with Titus [Tituss Burgess], a garish aspiring actor and Jaqueline [Jane Krakowski] a rich housewife losing her grip on reality.
However, the ’30 Rock’ actress claimed that if a movie did happen, “it would be a freestanding thing.”
And Robert told the publication: “We believe there are more stories to tell, and hopefully there will be an announcement about that soon.”
This isn’t the first time the ‘Mean Girls’ writer has spoken of an independent movie and insisted that if they’re “lucky enough” to make a film, they would use existing character arcs.
She previously said: “If we’re lucky enough to get to do the movie, I think it would be a stand-alone idea. So we were able to complete some arcs for our characters in the upcoming half of the season.”
Robert added: “At the same time, we knew that there were threads and themes in the show best suited to the scale and scope of a feature. For example, did Titus ever purchase that box of capes from the medical supply store?”

Gabrielle Union slams mommy shamers

OHMYGOSSIP — Gabrielle Union had to hit back at the “mommy shamers” from day one.
The ‘Being Mary Jane’ star welcomed daughter Kaavia James into the world two months ago with her husband Dwyane Wade but she isn’t worried about making motherhood “mistakes” publicly.
She said: “I had to hit the mommy shamers day one. I’m going to do it my way. I’m sure I’m going to make all kinds of mistakes and when I ask for help, which I will, I would love to hear all y’all’s advice. Everybody has been on my journey of pain and anguish and trauma, and I owe it to myself to enjoy every second of my joy.”
And Gabrielle – who has been open about her fertility struggles before welcoming Kaavia via a surrogate – has no plans to stop sharing her story online and refuses to “answer to anybody” but herself.
She added to People magazine: “If you’ve been rocking with me, in my misery and my pain and my failures, I want you to enjoy my joys. If you can’t just sit back and enjoy the miracles without offering every piece of advice Nana ever gave you, it’s okay to unfollow. It’s okay to just enjoy the ride … I want to be able to make whatever choice I want to make and not have to answer to anybody but me.
“As long as I feel good, as long as I feel confident, screw you. Look in the mirror and fix your own life. [I want to] give people that example of somebody who refuses to let anyone dictate what the hell I do or don’t do or say or don’t say.”

David Suchet believes he’d miss out on Poirot now

OHMYGOSSIP — David Suchet fears he would have lost out on his most famous TV role as detective Hercule Poirot if he was going for the part now because he’s not Belgian.
The 72-year-old English actor portrayed Agatha Christie’s fictional detective for 24 years in 70 episodes to much critical acclaim.
Suchet has watched with interest as some of his acting peers have been attacked by pressure groups for portraying minority characters and he says if you take that thinking to its ultimate conclusion then he would be deemed to be the wrong nationality to play Poirot, and it is a mindset which he thinks is worrying.
In an interview with The Daily Telegraph newspaper, he said: “I’ve seen a lot of change in 50 years. Multicultural casting took time to adapt to. I had to work on myself to become more open-minded, and stop hanging on to fuddy-duddy traditions.
“Theatre has to evolve. It’s never going to be the same again, but there’s a danger we’re actually becoming narrower. Art must be free if it’s to express itself – you should serve the writing. I’ve just been in a Pinter play (‘The Collection’) where I played a gay character: I’m not gay but it crossed my mind, ‘Will there be objections?’ I asked (gay co-star) Russell Tovey if he minded, he said ‘Absolutely not’ but it’s up for debate.
“I’m very passionate that performers should have the opportunity for their latent to emerge, but to say actors should only play themselves would render character-actors redundant. If you take this to an extreme conclusion, I couldn’t have played Poirot because I’m not Belgian. If this is the way it’s going, I’ll be out of a job.”
Recently, Bryan Cranston was criticised for playing wheelchair-bound billionaire in ‘The Upside’ in 2017 taking the part away from a disabled actor but he dismissed the complaints insisting it is an actor’s job to transform into different people.
Suchet insists his hunger to explore different characters it was what drives him on in his career and he has always resisted attempts to pigeonhole him as a performer.
He said: “We live in a supermarket society where people want to box you in, but I can’t easily be boxed in. I’m part of the Establishment yet also an enigma.”

Kanye West and Pete Davidson come together to celebrate Kid Cudi’s birthday

OHMYGOSSIP — Kanye West and Pete Davidson came together to celebrate Kid Cudi’s birthday.
The ‘Saturday Night Live’ star famously made a dig about the ‘Bound 2’ rapper on the comedy show but the duo seemed to put any bad feelings behind them as they dined out at Nobu with the birthday boy and actor Timothée Chalamet.
The trio ate with Kid Cudi at Nobu restaurant on Wednesday night (30.01.19) and Kanye’s wife Kim Kardashian West was there to document the event on her Instagram story.
Pete had previously fumed at Kanye and told the singer that his mental health issues are “not an excuse to act like a jack***”.
Speaking on Saturday Night Live the week after Kanye made a pro-Trump speech on the show the previous week, he said: “So, speaking strictly for myself, what Kanye said after we went off the air last week was one of the worst, like, most awkward things I’ve ever seen here … Kanye, I know you’re like, ‘Yo, this is the real me, I’m off the meds.’ Take ’em! There’s no shame in the medicine game! … Being mentally ill is not an excuse to act like a jack***. I’m quoting my therapist, my mom and my mailman.”
However, Pete recently hailed Kanye’s “bravery” in speaking about mental health.
He wrote on Instagram: “Bravo Kanye West for standing up for
yourself and speaking out against mental health. I can’t explain to you enough how difficult and scary it is to be honest about stuff like this. We need people like Kanye. No one should ever point fingers at you for your bravery in speaking about mental health.”

Alex Rodriguez: Jennifer Lopez destroyed the word no

OHMYGOSSIP — Alex Rodriguez loves how Jennifer Lopez has “just destroyed” the word no.
The former professional baseball player is impressed by how his girlfriend has turned can’t into can and has fought back against being pigeonholed in her career.
Speaking about her movie ‘Second Act’, he told USA Today: “When you think about this movie, it resembles what we don’t want. We don’t want people to think of us in a limited way. We do not want to be stuck in a small box and for someone to say, you can’t do this because you’re not good enough or for whatever reasons. The way that Jennifer has just destroyed the word ‘no’ or ‘can’t’ or small box. This movie talks a lot about that.”
Meanwhile, Jennifer previously insisted she is still “just a girl from the Bronx”, despite her three-decade spanning showbiz career.
She said: “It’s like if you’re from Italy. Just because you don’t live in Italy any more, you’re still Italian. It’s the same thing for me, being from the Bronx. Even though I’ve travelled the world and I live in Los Angeles now, I’m still just a girl from the Bronx.”
And the 49-year-old actress says she only recently found the confidence in herself.
She shared: “I feel like I have only just got comfortable and am finally confident in who I am and what I do. I really wish I would have found this confidence in my early thirties, but it took me a long time to get there. I’m still a work in progress, by the way. But I do now feel that this is not a mistake, it’s not a fluke – this is what I do and I’m good at it.”

Chris Pratt jokes there’s nudity in the Lego Movie 2

OHMYGOSSIP — Chris Pratt has joked there is Lego nudity in new animated sequel ‘The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part’ because you get to see one of the characters without their plastic hair.
The 39-year-old actor returns as the voice of mini plastic figure Emmet Brickowski, the hero of the first film, and in the follow-up he is “special best friends” with Lucy, aka Wildstyle, who is brought to life once again by Elizabeth Banks.
Pratt and Banks have told fans that things get a “little steamy” between the two characters as Emmet sees Lucy’s head without her click-on hair.
Making at a surprise appearance at the multimedia screening of ‘The Lego Movie 2’ in London on Wednesday night (30.01.19), Banks said: “We are special best friends, we do a little bit of almost hand holding and he sees me without my hair.”
Pratt jokingly added: “It gets pretty hot for a PG movie, it’s a little steamy! No hair is Lego naked.
“We explore this relationship a little further. We’re in a town called Apocalypseburg. Everything is not awesome and Emmet is keeping his cheerful, optimistic attitude and everyone is not. You can imagine what this represents for a young kid whose pure and innocent and optimistic and what this means.”
Pratt enjoyed every minute of reprising his role as Emmet in the Warner Bros. Pictures film and he also loved getting to voice second character Rex Dangervest, a space-hopping macho hero that is inspired by the actor’s roles as Star-Lord from the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Marvel movies, velociraptor trainer Owen Grady from ‘Jurassic World’ and Joshua Faraday from the 2016 remake of The ‘Magnificent Seven’.
He said: “It’s really good, I’m so proud of it. There’s something for everyone, there’s stuff that adults will pick up on with the themes that will resonate with them, and kids will be able to pick up on stuff too, it’s kind of made for everybody.
“Emmet is back and I also play a character called Rex Dangervest. Rex is essentially everything young Emmet thinks is macho and cool and grown-up, He’s got tonnes of bravado and swagger and he’s everything that Emmet is not. Essentially their partnership will allow Emmet to try and be someone he’s not.”
After attending the screening, Pratt and his fiancée Katherine Schwarzenegger enjoyed an evening out at London private members club Soho House and they were joined by his co-star Banks, 44.

OHMYGOSSIP — Emma Stone is “honoured” to join the Board of Directors at the Child Mind Institute.
The ‘La La Land’ actress – who has been open about her battle with anxiety and panic attacks as a young girl – has joined the nonprofit organisation, which helps to transform the lives of children struggling with mental health and learning disorders.
She told People magazine: “I’m honoured to join the board of the Child Mind Institute. This is a stigma-shattering organisation I am deeply passionate about, and I’m looking forward to helping the Child Mind Institute continue to advance its critically important work.”
Whilst the Institute’s president, Dr. Harold S Koplewicz, added: “Emma’s courage in openly discussing her story with anxiety is inspirational. It offers hope to millions of kids that it is possible to overcome their own challenges and thrive.”

I am sensitive on a level that is problematic. I mean, I’ve talked to my therapist about it before, and she’s like, Thank God you found [acting]. I started acting in youth theatre when I was 11. But it’s weird when it becomes your job. And then there are other parts of it, like sitting here with the tape recorder in between us, that aren’t things that you think about when you’re a kid and it’s just like, ‘This is a safe, great place to feel a lot.'”
