Katherine Kelly thinks soap stars have more opportunities than ever

OHMYGOSSIP — Katherine Kelly thinks soap stars have more opportunities than ever to become big names.
The former ‘Coronation Street’ actress has hit out at a time when TV bosses seemed to look down on performers who made their name in soaps, but she insisted there isn’t as much snobbery in the industry anymore with plenty of scope to build a career.
She told the Daily Star newspaper: “I’d say most of the colleagues had on ‘Corrie’ are still working. We might not see them on TV because they’re doing stage work or they’re in America. But they’re doing really well.
“Of course, I can only speak about my experience or my generation of soap actors. But for me there hasn’t been any snobbery about soaps. I understand that was the case a decade or so before.
“There are also more channels and opportunities now. I actually think there is a good work rate for anyone who has been in a soap.”
Since leaving ‘Corrie’ in 2012, Katherine – who played Becky McDonald on the soap – has gone onto appear in the likes of ‘The Night Manager’, ‘Happy Valley’ and ‘Mr Selfridge’, and she explained she has never tried to shy away from her six years on the cobbles.
She added: “I’ve never gone in for snobbery. I definitely don’t differentiate from a lead at the National Theatre and a lead on ‘Corrie’. I think they are both worthy of my best endeavour.”
Katherine – whose new ITV drama ‘Cheat’ launches on Monday (11.03.19) at 9pm – also praised the rise of streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Now TV for giving more of a platform to actors.
Reflecting on the state of the industry when she left the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) back in 2001, she pointed out that there just weren’t enough outlets, meaning if actors missed out on “that year’s period drama”, they weren’t expecting a spot on TV.
She said: “But now what’s so exciting is there are so many shop windows. People can even make their own stuff and get it out there.”

Katy Perry performed for Isla Fisher

OHMYGOSSIP — Katy Perry was the surprise performer at Isla Fisher’s 40th birthday.
The ‘Now You See Me’ actress has recalled how her husband Sacha Baron Cohen organised for the pop superstar to play at her 40th birthday bash three years ago, as she praised Katy for being “so nice and sweet”.
Speaking on The Talk, Isla said: “I turned 40 and … I was putting on my makeup and [Sacha] came in and saw Katy Perry [branded] eyelashes, and he said, ‘Oh, you really like Katy Perry.’ I said, ‘Yeah, you know that!’ It was kind of a strange comment, but I didn’t think of it again. Cut to I’m on the dancefloor, totally drunk with all my mum friends at my birthday, and I see like, a diamante microphone, and the hand gripping it is none other than Katy Perry! She didn’t get paid, she’s just so nice. She’s so sweet and she sang all her hits, and I almost peed my pants, it was amazing!”
However, it was definitely different from Isla’s most recent birthday as she hosted a games’ night for her 43rd birthday bash.
She shared: “I had sort of, 30 mates, and we hired this game company and they come and … you do all these (games), Pictionary … Charades, and all this sort of stuff. And my husband, who doesn’t know anything about pop culture and is not sort of clued in, he won! And then when he won, he didn’t even do a funny speech. He was like, ‘Yeah, so?’ He took home the present that I had bought for the winner! It was my birthday and he won!”

The 25-year-old singer – who is married to Hailey Bieber – had previously opened up about how becoming so famous at such a young age had a negative effect on his mental health.
He shared: “I started really feeling myself too much. ‘People love me, I’m the s**t,’ that’s honestly what I thought. I got very arrogant and cocky. I was wearing sunglasses inside … I found myself doing things that I was so ashamed of, being super-promiscuous and stuff, and I think I used Xanax because I was so ashamed.”

Lea Michele and Zandy Reich can’t wait to ‘spend the rest of their lives together’

OHMYGOSSIP — Lea Michele and Zandy Reich can’t wait to “spend the rest of their lives together”.
The duo tied the knot in front of family and friends in Napa, California, on Saturday (09.03.19) and they are looking forward to the next chapter in their life.
The couple shared to People magazine: “We are so excited to be married and grateful to be surrounded by our friends and family. And most of all, we’re so happy to spend the rest of our lives together.”
Lea and Zandy got engaged last April but the ‘Glee’ star previously insisted she would have dumped her fiancé if they didn’t “travel well together.”
She shared: “When you’re meeting someone, you have to see right off the gate how they travel and if you travel well together. Luckily, when we first met, we realised that we do travel well together. That is a big relationship key I think. We love travelling, he’s so well travelled. It’s funny – he’s been to a lot of places, I’ve been to a lot of places, but weirdly, a lot of the places I’ve been to he’s never been to, and where he’s been to I’ve never been to. So we’re excited to show each other, but also get to explore new places together.”
In May 2018, Lea revealed she had started wedding planning on Pinterest.
She shared: “Right now, I’m really focused on this tour. But I’m also slowly looking at Pinterest and finding things I like and that excited me. It’s a really incredible time. I’m so grateful and really excited for everything. I honestly have to say I think just getting married is probably the best – and celebrating with all of my friends and family.”

David Gray ‘paved the way’ for artists like Ed Sheeran

OHMYGOSSIP — David Gray says his seminal LP ‘White Ladder’ “paved the way” for artists like Ed Sheeran.
The 50-year-old singer/songwriter achieved worldwide success after the release of the 1998 record, which he initially released via his own IHT Records.
Although it failed to chart at first, over a year later, in May 2000, the record was re-released on ATO Records and debuted at number 69 on the Official UK Albums Chart, before finally becoming a chart-topper on August 5, 2001.
Gray – who released his first album in four years, ‘Gold In A Brass Age’, last week – has had three number one albums during his career; including 2002’s ‘A New Day at Midnight’ and 2005’s ‘Life In Slow Motion’ and ‘White Ladder’.
He says that his success allowed the likes of the ‘Shape of You’ hitmaker, James Blunt, and most recently, James Bay, George Ezra and Tom Walker, to make “soul-baring” guitar music cool.
Speaking to the Daily Star newspaper, he said: “When I started out, a man with a guitar baring his soul wasn’t in vogue at all. Suddenly, it’s everywhere!”
On how influential the album was on his successors, he said: “‘White Ladder’ paved the way for a lot of stuff that’s happened.
“Its success came from nowhere, and it changed how the business thought about what music should be.
“Since then, there have been lots of artists who’ve taken it on and done their own thing.”
Despite his recipe for success, the ‘Please Forgive Me’ hitmaker says that his comeback album needed to be different.
He explained: “When you’re in a creative process, you have to shake it up.
“If you go the same way, you just wear a rut in the road.
“That’s never going to work indefinitely, so you have to find a new path to walk.”
Gray teamed up with producer Ben de Vries, the son of composer and studio wizard Marius de Vries – who has worked with the likes of Coldplay, Arcade Fire, Kylie Minogue and Bjork – on the tracks and he said he brought in the “weird electronic” sounds on the LP.
The ‘Babylon’ hitmaker – who worked with Marius on-and-off since 2005 – explained: “Ben had the confidence not to be intimidated by me. He was playing some weird electronic tracks, and I thought, ‘This is exactly what I want.
“I don’t want to hear my guitar playing softly away on this record.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Kimora Lee Simmons is to relaunch Baby Phat.
The 43-year-old fashion designer – who has two children, Ming, 19, and Aoki, 16, with ex-husband Russell Simmons, and Kenzo, nine, with former partner Djimon Hounsou and three-year-old Wolfe with her husband Tim Leissner – took to Instagram to announce that she has repurchased her iconic American apparel streetwear brand and will unveil a new collection later this year.
Kimora first created Baby Phat 20 years ago alongside her ex-husband Russell’s’ Phat Fashions company, and the star later expanded the hugely-successful womenswear brand into fragrance, footwear, lingerie, children’s wear, interiors and accessories when it was sold in 2004 to the Kellwood Company.
Writing on Instagram, Kimora wrote: “Guess who’s bizaack… #DontMakeMeHaveToRelapseOnThese…. #HappyInternationationalWomensDay (sic)”
In 2000, Kimora was named creative director of the streetwear label and later was named Chief Executive Officer until 2010 when she parted ways with the brand.
Speaking to WWD, Kimora said: “It’s perfect timing for this. Over the past several years, we realised the brand resonates with people and lives deep in their souls.”
The fashion mogul launched her own eponymous line in 2013 which she will continue to operate as a separate label from Baby Phat because “one is older than the other”.
She added: “They’re siblings, but one is older than the other. We’re working fast and furiously and have a lot up our sleeves.”
The much-anticipated relaunch will see her two daughters Ming and Aoki become part of the company.
Speaking to Bloomberg TV, Kimora added: “It’s very important that you have women on both sides: women as the end user, women as the creator. We need to take more of that responsibility and own it.”

The Spice Girls almost shared style

OHMYGOSSIP — Emma Bunton has revealed the Spice Girls were originally all meant to dress in the same outfits.
The 43-year-old singer has revealed that she and her bandmates Mel C, Mel B, Geri Horner and Victoria Beckham were asked by talent management father and son duo Bob and Chris Herbert to be like traditional groups and dress in matching clothes when they were created by the pair.
However, the ‘Wannabe’ hitmakers had other ideas about how they wanted to display their “different personalities” on stage and came up with the concept of each member having their own distinct look and nickname.
Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph’s Stella magazine, Emma shared: “I turned up with my mum. They were all sitting in Geri’s green Fiat. I was nervous, but straight away I knew it was going to be something. We were all different, we wanted to dress differently, to show that you can all be mates but have totally different personalities. We always had our own very clear ideas about how to do things, what we wanted to say and what we wanted to sing.”
Emma was known as Baby Spice, Geri was Ginger Spice, Mel C became Sporty Spice, Victoria was Posh Spice and Mel B was known as Scary Spice.
The ‘Viva Forever’ chart topper – who is currently preparing for the Spice Girls’ upcoming reunion tour, which Victoria has decided not to be part of – admits that being a part of the girl group “changed her life” and she is extremely “proud” of everything they achieved.
She added: “Being part of the Spice Girls changed my life. I went to stage school and grew up fully aware that things come, things go. If you get a chance, work hard and make the absolute most of it.
“There is not a single thing I regret about it – from what I wore to what we did. I’m really proud we never took ourselves too seriously, which is why I still like being called Baby. It always makes me smile.”

Khloe Kardashian’s lavish birthday gift

OHMYGOSSIP — Khloe Kardashian splashed out to hire a luxurious private jet to celebrate her best friend’s birthday.
The ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ star shelled out the hefty amount to rent the airplane for her best friend Malika Haqq and her twin sister Khadijah Haqq McCray’s birthday on Sunday (10.03.19).
Khloe shared a video of Malika and Khadijah getting onto the private jet, and she can be heard wishing the pair a happy birthday.
The video was captioned: “Only the best for my besties.”
A beautiful spread of sweet treats was put on for the twins and the other partygoers, with Khloe sharing a photo of sweet pastries that spelled out ‘Happy Birthday Malika’ and ‘Happy Birthday Khadija’.
Khloe has had a rough time of it lately after her partner Tristan Thompson cheated on her with Kylie Jenner’s friend Jordyn Woods but Khloe recently took to social media to insist the blame for the cheating scandal should fall on Tristan after she previously blamed Jordyn.
She wrote: “This has been an awful week & I know everyone is sick of hearing about it all (as am I). I’m a rollercoaster of emotions & have said things I shouldn’t have. Honestly, Tristan cheating on me & humiliating me, wasn’t such a shock as the first time.
What’s been harder & more painful is being hurt by someone so close to me. Someone whom I love & treat like a little sister.
“But Jordyn is not to be blamed for the breakup of my family. This was Tristan’s fault. I have to move on with my life & count my blessings, my family, my health, & my beautiful baby True. (sic)”

Peter and Emily Andre’s ‘temperamental’ son

OHMYGOSSIP — Peter and Emily Andre’s son has become a “little bit temperamental”.
The couple have revealed their youngest child, two-year-old son Theodore has started his “terrible twos” and is more “demanding” then his older sibling Amelia, now five, was at that age.
Speaking to OK! magazine, she said: “Theo has been getting on so well but recently he has been a little bit temperamental, so I think some of the terrible twos have started!
“With Millie at that age I was quite firm from the beginning and I didn’t reward the behaviour so she just got over it. I’m going to try the same with him but he’s a little more demanding than Millie.”
Peter is teaching his two-year-old son to be bilingual so he can speak both English and Greek, which is the mother tongue of Pete’s parents who moved to Australia when he was six.
He revealed in December: “Over the last couple of weeks we’ve noticed a real improvement in his speech – he can converse properly and his understanding of Greek has got better, too.
“If I hold something up and ask him what colour it is in Greek, he replies in English! He’s so much happier now he’s able to talk more because he can tell us what he wants and there’s no frustration there. He’s a little ledge.”
And Pete and Emily, 29, won’t rule out having another baby in the future.
The qualified doctor previously said: “Pete said in a recent interview that he wants one more child but I can’t say I’m on the same page at the moment. I think he’s forgotten about the sleepless nights with Theo at the start. Maybe when I’ve dedicated a few years to my career I will think about having some more as I really want to get stuck into it next year.”

Vicky McClure will always work

OHMYGOSSIP — Vicky McClure will “always work”.
The ‘Line of Duty’ star enjoys having something to keep busy and would never assume herself to be comfortable enough not to find ways to make money, even if that doesn’t involve acting.
She said: “I’ll always work. If I couldn’t act, I’d find another job. We all have to work – there is no pot of gold, there’s no estate waiting for me! And also I think there’s a real sense [that] I enjoy work.
“I think the assumption that we [actors] are all loaded and swanning about, making films all the time, is just wrong.
“My dad’s always been, like, ‘Make sure you save’. You need money. And if you haven’t got it, you’ll really struggle. And if you have got it, you need to look after it because if you lose it, you’re f***ed.”
At the moment, when she does get a break between jobs, the 35-year-old actress – who famously also worked in a surveyors’ office during the eight years she appeared in ‘This Is England’ – has enjoyed taking on various DIY projects in the Nottingham home she shares with fiance Jonny Owen.
Discussing recently paining the “quite scuffed” seating area in her kitchen, she told You magazine: “I ordered some [white] gloss on Amazon. When it came, it was black!’
“I just went ahead and painted it anyway. I did that thing where I was, like, “Maybe it was fate? Like, everybody’s going for dark paint these days…’
“It’s not bad. And then when you’ve got cushions on it, it’s a bit better. So, yeah, I’m doing a bit of DIY. This is what you do when you’re unemployed. It’s great!”

Rylan Clark-Neal had ‘worst’ time on Celebrity Apprentice

OHMYGOSSIP — Rylan Clark-Neal had the “worst three days” of his life making ‘Celebrity Apprentice’.
The 30-year-old presenter took part in the star-studded special for Comic Relief – which saw teams of famous men and women pitted against one another to organise a cabaret evening – and he admitted he found it “really difficult” having his freedom restricted during filming.
He said: “‘The Apprentice’ was potentially the worst three days of my life.
“You’re only allowed to do certain things at certain times, which is obviously what makes a TV show.
“It was like I was a contestant on ‘The X Factor’ again where you’re not in control.
“And I’ve worked so hard for the last seven years to be in control of when I go for a wee, and to be told I can’t go for a wee yet, I just found it really difficult.
“I have so much more compassion for the contestants now.”
While other contestants have admitted to being afraid of show boss Lord Alan Sugar, Rylan admitted sitting in the boardroom under the gaze of his assistant Baroness Karren Brady was far more scary.
He told the new issue of OK! magazine: “Karren – or as I like to call her, Baroness Brady of Knightsbridge CBE.co.uk – has got the stare and she has this ability to make you doubt the sky is blue. She has this weird baroness power.”
Meanwhile the former ‘Big Brother’s Bit on the Side’ host admitted it is really difficult for him to go out without being recognised.
He said: “If I do have a rare night out, I want no one to recognise me. It’s harder to do that now, though, not because I’m anything special, but because I am 20ft tall with massive teeth!”

Kym Marsh praises ‘brave’ Nicola Thorp for opening up about sexual harassment

OHMYGOSSIP — Kym Marsh has praised Nicola Thorp for bravely speaking out about her experiences with sexual harassment.
The ‘Coronation Street’ actress – who plays Michelle Connor on the soap – is proud of her co-star for opening up about such an important issue, and she admitted it made her think about how long it has been an issue in the television industry.
Writing in this week’s issue of OK! Magazine, she said: “It was brave of Nicola to speak out and I think, wow, I can’t believe some men have got away with doing things like that for so long.
“Sadly though, there seems to be far too many women who have. It needs to be stamped out and opening up, like Nicola has done, can only be a good thing.”
Her comments come after her friend – who plays Nicola Rubinstein on ‘Corrie’ – recently revealed she was harassed by a director working on a documentary about women’s rights.
She said: “A man in the public eye approached me to do a documentary about women’s rights and then, in the process, he told me how much he wanted to have sex with me.
“He then started sending me photos of dresses and shoes he thought I’d look sexy in at three in the morning.
“That really messed me up for a while. It made me think, ‘well, did I encourage him? Was my worth as a potential presenter of a documentary only gauged by how much I flirted with him?’ ”
The soap star – who was also once locked in a work bathroom when she was 19 until she agreed to kiss her manager – has spoken out and said society needs to “definitely” do more to support women who have been harassed.
Nicola, now 30, added: “This sort of thing is happening to women all of the time. I am not unique in that.

Charlize Theron has empathy for Megyn Kelly after Fair and Balanced

OHMYGOSSIP — Charlize Theron has “empathy” for Megyn Kelly after playing her in ‘Fair and Balanced’.
The Academy Award-winning actress plays the American TV presenter in an upcoming drama about the fall of Fox News CEO Roger Ailes, who under advice from a supervisor didn’t speak out against the alleged sexual harassment and assault she faced at the hands of the disgraced CEO.
The ‘Atomic Blonde’ star explained that she wasn’t aware of “how complicated” the entire story was and says many people didn’t understand the “complicated place” Megyn, 48, was in.
Speaking to Variety, Charlize, 43, said: “I didn’t know how complicated her situation was and I think for a lot of people, they didn’t understand why she didn’t just speak up.
“She was in a complicated place and as a human being, I have empathy for that. I don’t think a lot of people truly understood that.”
Charlize went on to explain that she didn’t attempt to meet Megyn before making the film – which focuses on the story of a woman at Fox News who decided to fight back against harassment and intimidation, which led to Ailes being fired by the TV network – as she wanted to keep her “perspective” and a meeting could “get emotional”.
She said: “I think it’s important for us to tell the story from afar and I think it’s hard for me as an actor to have perspective. I don’t know. It could get emotional, but other people on our crew” [did meet her].
The ‘Monster’ actress previously stated that the movie, helmed by Jay Roach, is an “important story” and insisted the project is “in the right hands”.
She explained: “I think it’s an important story. It was written really well, and I think it was the writing, and the filmmaker, that made me realise it was in the right hands.”

Dua Lipa won’t play festivals in 2019

OHMYGOSSIP — Dua Lipa is taking a break from festivals in 2019.
The ‘New Rules’ hitmaker has revealed she is focusing the rest of the year on her second studio album – the follow-up to her hugely popular 2017 self-titled debut record – which is due out later this year, and is almost complete, as well as its accompanying tour, which she teased will see her perform on “bigger stages”.
She said: “I’m not doing any festivals [in 2019], this year is just wrapping up the album and then hopefully release something this year.”
The 23-year-old star has played the likes of Reading and Leeds and even launched her own Sunny Hill Festival with her father Dukagjin Lipa, in her parents’ home city of Prishtina, Kosovo, in 2018.
However, getting to play the John Peel Stage – which is named after the legendary late BBC Radio 1 DJ – at Glastonbury, after her album was released, was a huge highlight for the Grammy-winner, who admitted she feels “invincible” on stage.
Speaking at the the International Live Music Conference (ILMC) in London, she said: “My first ever Glastonbury, just because I’d been going to the festival for so many years and to get to be that person on stage – the John Peel Stage.
“I played that same stage the year after and my album came out and there’s no feeling quite like it, it’s just the most amazing, exciting butterfly mental thing that happens to you.
“It’s pretty surreal and I get really nervous before I get on stage and when I get on stage there’s something about it, I just feel invincible I guess.”
The ‘Swan Song’ hitmaker explained that album number two is “conceptual” and that it will influence her shows.
She said: “Now that I’ve toured and felt that live environment, I make everything with that in mind.
“This album, I guess, is a bit more conceptual, but if I told you the concept then I’d have to tell you the album title.
“But in that world I’m really thinking about the live show and something new and something different.
“Hopefully now I’ll get to do shows that are a bit bigger and stages that are a bit bigger and we’ll get to play around a bit more with that.”

Hollyoaks: Nikki Sanderson doesn’t want backlash over Munchausen Syndrome storyline

OHMYGOSSIP — Nikki Sanderson hopes she doesn’t get backlash over the upcoming Munchausen Syndrome storyline on ‘Hollyoaks’.
The 34-year-old actress is glad the soap will be exploring the mental health condition – which sees someone suffering with it repeatedly lie about mental or physical illness – and help the public have a better understanding of it, but she hopes people will be able to separate her performances as Maxine Minnever from her real life persona.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, she said: “I think it’s brilliant [viewers are] in on it – they’ll be shouting at the screen.
“[Damon Kinsella (Jacob Roberts)] is lovely and he’s a character that everyone loves so seeing Maxine do what she does to him will make them get really involved. They’re going to hate Maxine! It gets the audience more involved and riled up if they do know – it’s more fun for them that way.
“I hope they don’t turn on me as Nikki but will undoubtedly turn on Maxine. And rightly so because she is doing a terrible thing but I hope that as the story goes deeper, the audience will also see this desperation in Maxine and realise it comes from her heartbreak and love. Maxine isn’t setting out to hurt people at all.”
The upcoming scenes will see Maxine telling Damon that she can’t feel her legs, but when doctors perform tests at the hospital it’s revealed she has faked her symptoms to get attention from her man.
The storyline has given soap star Nikki an added challenge, as she’ll be having to portray both her own character, and the front her alter ego is putting on.
She added: “It’s kind of like Inception! Nikki is playing Maxine and Maxine is playing somebody else – I’d hate it if people thought Maxine was a better actress than me!
“I’ve had choices of how to play it so when Maxine is faking crying I am actually crying because I decided that Maxine is a good actress and good at hiding this lie. We’ve gone for it full throttle!”

Charlotte Church ditches binge drinking to avoid ‘hangaxiety’

OHMYGOSSIP — Charlotte Church has ditched binge drinking because she doesn’t want to deal with “hangxiety.”
The 33-year-old singer has “had enough” of the way she feels after drinking so decided to cut down at the beginning of the year and is now feeling “restored”.
She wrote in an article for The Guardian newspaper: “I don’t want to be teetotal, but I have had enough of the creeping panic, shame and guilt that comes with drinking. A spell without alcohol left me thoroughly restored…
“I just don’t want to deal with the hangxiety any more: the creeping panic, the shame, the guilt. I already renounced Catholicism.
“A recent study at Rutgers and Yale Universities claimed that binge and heavy drinking could even change us on a genetic level, leading to increased cravings for more booze. I like my genes as they are, thank you.”
But the ‘Crazy Chick’ hitmaker – who has children Ruby, 11, and 10-year-old Dexter with former partner Gavin Henson and is married to Jonathan Powell – isn’t giving up alcohol for good and insisted she isn’t the party animal people perceive her to be.
She said: “Look, I’m not teetotal. I don’t want to be. Neither am I the compulsive inebriate most suspect me to be. I can have a glass of wine without finishing the bottle.
“I am a woman in her 30s with responsibilities, trying to grasp control of her life in a world that is both distracted by – and neurotic about – its modern virtues, which are themselves extensive and difficult and often wholly narcissistic.”
Charlotte – who has also quit smoking – doesn’t regret making the changes, even if people now think she is “boring” because she feels so good about herself.
She quipped: “Am I becoming boring? Maybe, but if feeling this fabulously bloody brilliant is boring, then long reign tedium.”
