Leigh-Anne wants to ’empower women and girls’ with her music

OHMYGOSSIP — Leigh-Anne Pinnock wants to spread a message of girl power in her solo songs.
The former Little Mix singer has so far released two singles, ‘Don’t Say Love’ and ‘My Love’, since the group went on hiatus in 2022.
Leigh-Anne is proud that her former band – which was also comprised of Perrie Edwards and Jade Thirlwall and originally Jesy Nelson – inspired so many young girls and teenagers, just like the Spice Girls did before them, and she wants to continue to inspire with her own music.
Speaking to Quem magazine, she said: “If I’m not inspiring people, I don’t feel like I’m fulfilling my role, you know? It’s something I naturally want to do: empower women, girls and anyone.
“This has always been a very strong and important message that we wanted to spread as Little Mix. These are things that I take with me as a solo artist.”
The 32-year-old pop star admits it has taken a while to get used to flying solo without the support of the girls but she feels as though she is growing as an artist.
She said: “I’m loving every moment of this unique experience of being on my own. Each performance gives me a feeling of improvement, as if I am adapting more and more to who I am. My confidence grows with each show, but I also recognise the importance of being patient as I navigate the unfamiliar terrain of being a new artist. I am genuinely proud of what I have achieved.
“Every challenge I overcome strengthens my resilience, moulding me into a more robust version of myself. Leaving behind something so familiar is not easy, but I’m demonstrating, to myself and to the world, that I am strong.”
The ‘Touch’ hitmaker may not yet have released her debut solo album but she is already making plans to start work on her next record.
But Leigh-Anne has promised her fans that her debut solo LP will be out in 2024.
She said: “I’ll be back in the studio at the end of the year, which is exciting. There will be more songs and, for sure, an album in 2024. I’m always thinking about creating more, exploring different aspects of myself.”

‘It said every artist’s pain is for sale…’ Paloma Faith reveals poem inspired the title of her new album

OHMYGOSSIP — Paloma Faith’s late poet friend inspired the title of her new album ‘The Glorification of Sadness’.
The 42-year-old singer’s sixth studio LP drops on Friday (16.02.24) and Paloma has revealed that she chose the title after reading out a poignant poem at her close friend’s funeral which stated that “every artist’s pain is for sale”.
Speaking on the ‘How To Fail With Elizabeth Day’ podcast, she said: “Well, I called it ‘The Glorification Of Sadness’ because last year I had five funerals and one of the people who died was somebody who was quite close to me, a poet, and he had written this poem that I read out at his funeral. One of the lines of it really stuck with me. It said every artist’s pain is for sale and, once reading it, it really kind of resonated with me.”
Several of the songs on Paloma’s album deal with her feelings about her her separation from French artist Leyman Lahcine after 10 years in October 2023.
The ‘How You Leave A Man’ hitmaker admits that Leyman still remains a very important person in her life because he is the father of her two daughters, and she believes his presence will have an impact on her future impact on her relationships.
She said: “It feels so dramatically different because you can’t do the initial bit where you’re like, I need space, I can’t see you anymore. You’re forced to do that. We pretended at first, pretended to get along, pretended we weren’t both absolutely devastated and it does get confusing. It’s like a never-ending break-up. I feel bad for anyone who dates me because he’s so important. He’s so wrapped up in my children that he’s almost more important than anybody else who might come along. I put him before most people because he’s the father of my kids.”

‘There is the Virgin Mary – there is the woman who gave birth to the Messiah…’ Matty Healy’s mother Denise Welch reveals reaction of The 1975 fans to her

OHMYGOSSIP — Matty Healy‘s mother Denise Welch says The 1975’s fans treat her like the “Virgin Mary” when they meet her.
The former ‘Coronation Street’ actress is a regular at the band’s concerts and is always happy to speak to fans about her son and his music.
Denise says that some people become very emotional when meeting her because Matty is her son and she can only describe their reaction as being something akin to a religious experience.
In an interview with BBC News, she said: “With Matthew’s fans, it’s, ‘There is the Virgin Mary – there is the woman who gave birth to the Messiah.’ I’ve had people in the foyer of The O2 touch me and burst into tears.
“He provokes this hero worship, to the point that the fact that I actually produced him in my body gives me that sort of reverence – and it’s quite hysterical. I do enjoy having a bit of fun with that.”
Denise, 65, listens to all The 1975’s albums but she admits it is hard to hear the track ‘She Lays Down’ – from their 2016 album ‘I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It’ – because Matty, 34, told her the lyrics were about her experience of post-partum depression after she gave birth to him in 1989.
The ‘Loose Women’ panellist was “heartbroken” when she first heard the track, adding: “If I hear it now, it makes me cry.”
Matty’s father is ‘Auf Wiedersehen, Pet’ actor Tim Healy – who got divorced from Denise in 2012 – and he admits his parents experience of fame has meant that he has found his celebrity status to be tedious and uninteresting.
In a previous with NME, he said: “I love people liking what I do, but I’m not interested in being famous. I think that’s why I try and subvert [fame] sometimes.”

ABBA announces special edition reissue of Waterloo for 50th anniversary

OHMYGOSSIP — ABBA have announced a special edition reissue of ‘Waterloo’.
The Swedish pop group – which consisted of Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad – won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with the title track from their second album and now in honour of the record’s 50th anniversary, it will be released in a host of formats along with brand new merchandise.
The album will be released as a Half-Speed mastered 45RPM 2LP Vinyl, along with a limited edition box set of the three vinyl singles originally released by Polar in 1974.
The singles – which as well as the title track include classics such as ‘Honey, Honey’ and ‘Hasta Mañana’ will also be made available as separate picture discs and a 10-inch vinyl featuring the title track in four different languages will also be released.
At the time of its initial release, no other album had sold as many copies in the group’s home country and Bjorn – who wrote the track alongside Benny, whilst Agnetha and Anni-Frid performed lead vocals – recalled that the song propelled them to stardom at a time when they were all struggling artists in the “rat race” just trying to pay rent.
He told Sky News: “Before we won the Eurovision Song Contest with ‘Waterloo’, Benny Andersson and I had been in a rat race,” he said. “We were running around producing other people’s records, writing songs for other people, even going on tours in different constellations just to pay the rent.
“But from ‘Waterloo’, when the royalties came pouring in, from that time we could afford to say no to everything else and just concentrate on the writing. That’s when you get better at it. And that’s what I wish for most songwriters today.”
The 50th anniversary reissue of ‘Waterloo’ is due for release on April 5.

Natasha Bedingfield: ‘I want my music to be more famous than me!’

OHMYGOSSIP — Natasha Bedingfield wants her music to be “more famous” than she is.
The 42-year-old singer is best known for her 2004 hit ‘Unwritten’ and admitted that because she is naturally an “introvert”, she became uncomfortable with fame when the track became a massive hit but is pleased that her songs have “somehow” taken on a life of their own.
She told OK! Magazine: “I’m an introvert who likes people. After ‘Unwritten’, I was suddenly in the spotlight and that was a shock. When people first experience fame, it’s like being inside a washing machine. I definitely felt that. I have a bit of memory loss from that time, it was a blur.
“I’m not a big hugger, I remember doing promo at a record store once and just getting totally hugged out! I remember a paparazzi asking me to pose for them, and they’d give me a percentage of every photo. I said, ‘I can’t do that. I can’t live my life like that.’ I want my songs to be more famous than me, and somehow, that’s happened.”
The track was even used in the Sydney Sweeney movie ‘Anyone But You’ and Natasha admitted she would never would have thought it would make the soundtrack of a romcom but is thrilled that her music has found a new audience with a younger generation.
She said: “It’s crazy! I would never have anticipated ‘Unwritten’ being used in a romcom at the beginning of the year – which is also its 20th anniversary. So, I’d already talked to the label about doing something big. We’re talking about a big show, maybe a vinyl version and I plan to put some new music out. The stars just aligned. just think a good song is a good song. I went to the red carpet of Anyone But You and the actors were there. My publishers were like, ‘Natasha, just so you know, your song really is used a lot in the movie.”
“I thought, ‘Great, thumbs up!’ Then I saw the film and was like, ‘Wow, it’s played three or four times!’ That felt special. I love that it’s trending on TikTok, people are skipping out of cinemas singing it.

Brian Wilson’s lost 1970s country album to be released in 2025

OHMYGOSSIP — Brian Wilson’s lost 1970s country album is finally set to be released.
The collection, titled ‘Cows in the Pasture, features the vocals of former Beach Boys manager Fred Vail and, according to Rolling Stone, it will be released sometime next year.
Wilson is an executive producer and added his vocals to one of the tracks.
Speaking to the publication, Vail shared how the pair came to collaborate on the collection: “I said to him [Wilson], ‘Have you written any country songs?’
“And he said, ‘Well, no.’ I said, ‘Do you have any idea who you’d like to use as musicians?’ He said, ‘Well, no. I’ve only worked with the Wrecking Crew for the most part. You find the songs. You select the musicians. We’ll go into Wally Heider’s Studio. We’ll start working on the album.’”
The pair worked on the songs alongside Beach Boys’ 1970 LP ‘Sunflower’. They recruited guitarist James Burton, pianist Glen D. Hardin, and steel guitarist Red Rhodes.
Unfortunately, Wilson decided to ditch the project as he allegedly “lost interest”.
Vail recalled: “We never did any keeper vocals.
“They were mostly just scratch vocals that we never completed. There were no background vocals and no harmonies. It was a lot instrumentation. And when Brian lost interest, I just moved on.”
He went on to explain how Wilson was “dealing with a lot of [personal] issues” and decided to put the songs in the ‘Good Vibrations’ group’s vault.
All these years later, Vail has been able to finish the record with the help of Nashville-based producer Sam Parker and a host of “country music legends,” plus “rock and roll legends, contemporary country, and pop stars.”
He is keeping tight-lipped about who they are, however, we do know that the legendary T Bone Burnett – who was Bob Dylan’s guitarist – is one of them.
Wilson commented: “Fred always loved country music and he was a big rodeo guy.
“He’s a hell of a guy, one hell of a promoter, and I’m glad his album is coming out.”

Sir Brian May battles to play the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ guitar riff on stage

OHMYGOSSIP — Sir Brian May struggles to play the complex ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ guitar riff on stage.
The Queen guitarist said the lick of the band’s 1975 hit is so “unusual” he finds contorting his hand into the notes and chords when his adrenaline is pumping in front of fans.
Speaking after the North American Leg of Queen and Adam Lambert’s ‘Rhapsody’ tour finished at the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, he said one of the reasons the riff is so complex is that Queen’s late frontman Freddie Mercury wrote it on piano.
Brian told Total Guitar magazine: “(The riff) was more Freddie’s idea. Freddie had that riff in his head, and he played it on the piano, which is quite difficult because he plays in octaves.
“I just worked off that and slightly adapted it to the way a guitar needs to play it.
“And I was able to do a lot of interesting stuff with sounds because in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, I pretty much use every sound that my guitar can create and different pickup combinations.
“So… the sound is changing because there are different guitars coming in with different pickups sections.”
The riff starts on the sixth fret of the A-string and climbs up from the third fret, and includes a tonal shift – and Brian said it’s testament to Freddie’s skills as a musician and love of “heavy” rock.
He added: “It’s funny – Freddie was a good riffmeister, really.
“He was a devotee of Jimi Hendrix. People think he was just concerned with the lighter stuff but it’s not true, he did enjoy the heavy stuff, too.
“It’s not a riff that a guitarist would naturally play.
“And that’s a double-edged sword.
“It’s difficult for the guitar to get a hold of it, it’s very unusual.
“And to be honest, I still don’t find it easy!
“I can play it at home okay, but in the heat of the battle, if you like, when we’re paying it live, and there’s huge adrenaline, it’s the climax of the show and that riff comes along, it’s not the easiest thing to play.
“I’m excited and I’ve got to keep the passion, but I’ve got to keep a part of my brain cool just to handle where the fingers have to go because it isn’t natural.
“It’s one of the most unnatural riffs to play you could possibly imagine.
“But that’s the joy of it, really, because it’s so unusual.”
In the wake of Freddie’s death aged 45 in 1987, Queen were touted as ‘Queen Plus’ with singers including Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert.

Daniel Bedingfield eyes comeback after ditching pop to become a farmer

OHMYGOSSIP — Daniel Bedingfield is ready to make a music comeback after quitting the industry to become a farmer.
The 44-year-old star enjoyed huge success with hits like ‘Gotta Get Thru This’ and ‘If You’re Not The One’ in the early 2000s but turned his back on singing so he could try to “reverse climate change” with his Los Angeles farm and has now admitted that he wants to head back to the charts.
He told The Sun: “Coming from that single-minded focus of music and something that must make me feel epic when I listen to it… I want to make it so when other people hear it it blows their socks off, that’s quite hard to step off a drive that intense.
“So I focused it on learning languages and trying to reverse climate change, honestly. Trying to figure out regenerative practices, aggro farming, so I just learnt a lot of that.
“It’s the same level of intensity, the eco-system’s being destroyed by human hands and we have to do something to reverse it, and I just put that same intensity into something else.
“And now that drum ‘n’ bass and garage is back then I can do both.”
Last month, Daniel – who is the older brother of ‘Unwritten’ singer Natasha Bedingfield – announced three UK shows to take place in April he has now reflected on the “incredible drive” he had as a child who was inspired by the likes The Beatles and The Beach Boys to succeed in music.
He said: “The goal to make epic music, to push garage forward, to push drum ‘n’ bass forward, to impress my peers, to impress me, we’d listen to each other’s stuff, we’d try and make the next song that each other goes crazy about, kind of like The Beach Boys and The Beatles did.
“That’s incredibly driven for a nine-year-old until my early teens.”

Rod Stewart says Ed Sheeran’s songs won’t last

OHMYGOSSIP — Rod Stewart says Ed Sheeran’s songs won’t stand the test of time.
The 79-year-old rocker has admitted he doesn’t actually recall any of Ed’s tunes and he’s adamant they won’t still be played in 50 years time like Rod’s classic ‘Maggie May’ which remains popular more than fives decades after its release back in 1971.
Rod made the admission in an interview with The Times newspaper during which he was asked which current musicians are producing timeless hits , and the musician replied: “I’m sure they are. You mean like ‘Maggie May’? Songs that will be played in 50 years?”
However, Rod then forgot the name of a current artist he admires, saying: “I like whatshisname … Oh … great, Rod. Well done. He’s British, really talented and his songs will be around.”
When asked if he meant to say Sheeran, Rod retorted: “No, not Ed, I don’t know any of his songs, old ginger [nonsense]. Jesus.”
Rod eventually remembered the artist he is keen on is George Ezra, adding: “I think he writes really tremendous songs. He’ll be around for quite a while.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Rod went on to admit he worries young artists today now care more about being famous than producing excellent music.
He added: “We were brave in those days to go into the music business. We didn’t know where it would take us but record companies were different. They would give you a try … The people I came up with – the Stones, Elton – we all came into it because we loved the music.
“Money and fame didn’t factor – it was a burning ambition to sing. That may have changed. Now it’s more: ‘Ooh, let’s have a go at music. I don’t even have to play well. Maybe I’ll get rich.’ Fame comes before everything. All kids want is fame.”

‘You’re setting yourself up to be ridiculed again’: Azealia Banks slams Beyonce’s country music

OHMYGOSSIP — Azealia Banks has warned Beyonce she is “setting” herself up to be “ridiculed again” by going country.
The ‘Break My Soul’ hitmaker, 42, confirmed plans to release a country-themed album and dropped two new singles in an advert for Verizon which aired during the Super Bowl VIII on Sunday night (11.02.24) in which she attempted to break the internet with stunts including a hologram called Beyonc-AI and a film called Barbey before she declared: “OK, they ready. Drop the new music. I told y’all the ‘Renaissance’ is not over.”
After the commercial aired, she immediately released two new singles ‘Texas Hold Em’ and ’16 Carriages’ and confirmed ‘Renaissance Act II’ – the second part of her planned ‘Renaissance’ trilogy – will land on March 29.
However, not everyone is pleased with the R’n’B superstar’s interpretation of country music, namely, the outspoken ‘212’ hitmaker, who went as far as accusing Beyonce’s husband, music mogul Jay-Z, of “bullying” her into doing it.
The 32-year-old rapper began her Instagram Stories post: “I love you down, but them R’n’B runs over the Leslie feist back beats is giving Pickmesha.
“Nothing country about it. You’re setting yourself up to be ridiculed again. There’s a theatrical element to country music. Them [country] critics are not just going to accept an ugly blond wig and bullying from Jay-Z. It’s giving big-time musical grift. (sic)”
Referring to country star K. Michelle (aka Puddin), 41, she continued: “Yes, Black girls can make country music, but you’re just really not hitting the button.
“K. Michelle, this is your turn to really execute. It’s no shade, but K. Michelle truly understands the assignment.”
Turns out, Michelle – whose real name is Kimberly Michelle Pate – is fully behind Beyonce’s foray into country.
She posted to X (formerly Twitter): “Y’all been mentioning me all night.
“I’m just happy to be spoken about in my genre. I love Bey and will be supporting her like I always do.”

Brian May ‘bowed out’ of fight with ‘forceful’ David Bowie to make Under Pressure heavier

OHMYGOSSIP — Brian May “bowed out” in a disagreement over ‘Under Pressure’ with David Bowie.
The Queen guitarist has recalled how the “heavy guitar was lost” because the late ‘Starman’ hitmaker didn’t want the 1981 song to sound like The Who.
The 76-year-old guitar hero prefers the version with his heavy riff, but he settled for playing the acoustic guitar instead, to avoid getting involved with Bowie and late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury’s creative battle.
In an interview with Total Guitar magazine, May claimed Bowie said: “‘It’s not going to sound like The Who by the time I’ve finished with it.’”
He continued: “[Bowie] didn’t want it to be that way.”
The ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ hitmaker went on to claim that “we all had different ideas of how [‘Under Pressure’] should be mixed.”
He went on: “Basically it was Freddie and David fighting it out in the studio with the mix, and what happened in the mix was that most of that heavy guitar was lost.”
The rock legend confessed that he “never liked it, to be honest”, but insisted it’s personal preference regarding the heavier version.
He said: “I do recognise that it works. It’s a point of view, and it’s done very well.
“People love it.”
The ‘Killer Queen’ hitmaker plays his favourite version whenever he plays it live now.
He insisted: “It is a lot heavier, and I think it benefits from it.”
May says there were “too many awesome creative forces” in the studio, so he thought it was best to back down.
He said: “It’s probably the only time in my career I bowed out, because I knew it was going to be a fight.
“David was an awesome creative force, but you can’t have too many awesome creative forces in the same room. It starts to get very difficult.”
In a 2008 interview with MOJO magazine, May said of the recording sessions in the mountains in Switzerland: “It wasn’t easy because we were all precocious boys and David was very… forceful.
“But those are the things that happen in a studio, that’s when the sparks fly and that’s why it turned out so great.”
‘Under Pressure’ reached number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Queen’s second number-one hit in their home country and Bowie’s third, and also charted in the top 10 in more than 10 countries around the globe.
