MTV UK announces nominees for Brand New 2018

OHMYGOSSIP — MTV UK has announced its shortlist for MTV Brand New 2018.
The list of ones-to-watch nominees has been selected by MTV officials, key music influencers and industry representatives, and includes some of the most exciting emerging artists in the UK today, such as Bad Sounds and Elderbrook.
Of their nomination, musical group Bad Sounds said: “We’ve pretty much just made videos ourselves with friends, we never wanted to do the moody cool band thing so we’d just come up with stupid ideas for videos and stuff we thought was funny.
“We’re surprised that MTV even show them, let alone put us in their Brand New Top 10 for 2018.”
Elderbrook was similarly excited to have been nominated for MTV Brand New 2018.
The musician explained: “Really honoured to be picked for MTV’s Brand New. I grew up watching MTV so it’s a big honour to be included in this.”
The nominees – all of whom have been tipped for big things in 2018 – are set to go head to head in a public vote on Instagram in January, with a winner poised to be announced in the new year.
Anna Karatziva, the Head of Talent and Music at MTV UK, explained: “MTV Brand New is one of my favourite campaigns of the year. It’s really hard choosing the shortlist but it’s incredibly rewarding and exciting to work with talent at this stage of their career.
“We’re really looking forward to the public vote and supporting our finalists throughout the year!”
Recent MTV Brand New campaigns have helped to bring the likes of Ellie Goulding, Florence + The Machine and Jessie J to the attention of the public.
MTV Brand New 2018 Shortlist:

Elderbrook
Lotto Boyzz

James Arthur bares soul on new song Naked

OHMYGOSSIP — James Arthur is following up his comeback album ‘Back From The Edge’ with new single ‘Naked’.
The 29-year-old singer – who shot to fame after winning ‘The X Factor’ in 2012 – is readying himself to release the first song, which was co-written with songwriter to the stars Max Martin and his team, from his third studio effort on Friday (24.11.17).
The ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’ hitmaker only released his second record in October last year, and is already on to a strong start with the Gospel-sounding number, which was inspired by the late pop icon George Michael.
Explaining the influence, James said: “The four chords that introduce the song are key, I think.
“Then you get the crescendo, the middle eight, the huge final chorus, but there’s no sense of overload; it stays true to the simplicity of those four chords.
“It’s like a hymn, that devotional aspect. The minute you hear those chords, you want to sing over them.
“Gospel is something that’s become really close to my heart.
“I absolutely love it now. I’m not a particularly religious person but that music – man, it’s so powerful.
“Watching the ‪George Michael documentary, it was such a strong reminder of how he brought gospel influences into pop, and how beautiful the results can be.”
And ‘Naked’ is not the only song he has completed, as James has penned a track about his penchant for wine.
The pop star got the chance to spend some time writing with Ryan Tedder whilst on tour with his band OneRepublic in the US in the summer, and the pair wrote the track ‘Drink The Wine’.
The ‘Impossible’ star – who is a recovering drug addict – enjoys the odd alcoholic beverage after he’s performed to “unwind” after the “comedown” from the adrenaline rush from performing live.
He recently: “There’s a new album in the making.
“Ryan’s an incredible songwriter. We wrote a few songs together, we’d have a glass of red wine.
“We wrote a song called ‘Drink The Wine’. A beer, or a glass of whiskey or a glass of red wine, is my treat after a show.
“It helped me unwind, so that’s been the treat. It’s such a weird thing after a show; you have this comedown because it’s a climax when you’re on stage.”
James plans to return to the studio in December after his UK tour to focus on his third record, which is expected to be released in 2018.
He said: “Hopefully, I’m spending the December period making music.”

Queens of the Stone Age announce 2018 UK show

OHMYGOSSIP — Queens of the Stone Age have announced a UK show in June.
The ‘No One Knows’ hitmakers will take to the stage at London’s Finsbury Park on June 30 for a gig called ‘Queens of the Stone Age and Friends’, which will see them supported by the likes of Iggy Pop, The Hives and Run the Jewels.
A statement from promoter Festival Republic read: “Already boasting a reputation as one of the best live bands of the last two decades, Queens Of The Stone Age will have no problem mesmerising the crowd for their biggest London performance to date.
“Expect countless rock n’ roll anthems such as ‘No One Knows’, ‘Sick, Sick, Sick,’, ‘Little Sister’ and now ‘The Way You Used To Do’; with seven studio albums, and sold out venues across the globe, the Grammy nominated band aren’t stopping on their path to world domination. (sic)”
The promoter admitted there will be more bands added to the line-up at a future date.
They added: “With more of the line up still to be announced, the special one day event will take place on Saturday 30th June in London’s Finsbury Park, guaranteed to be the stand out show of the summer. (sic)”
Queens of the Stone Age – who are made up of Josh Homme, Troy Van Leeuwen, Dean Fertita, Michael Shuman and Jon Theodore – still have two days remaining on their UK and Ireland tour with a gig in Edinburgh tonight (23.11.17) and Dublin on Friday night (24.11.17).
The US rockers recently called for their fans to bring “chaos” to their shows because every night they go on stage they want to put all they have into their performance.
Guitarist Troy said: “We embrace chaos and danger, so should the fans.
“Every night we get on stage we give everything and things could break, the wheels could fall off.
“That’s the way life is, we are always looking to f**k things up.”
Tickets for Queens of the Stone Age’s Finsbury Park show are available from Friday December 1, 2017, at 9am.

Liam Gallagher dedicates Live Forever to Prince

OHMYGOSSIP — Liam Gallagher dedicated ‘Live Forever’ to Prince at his concert in Minneapolis on Monday night (20.11.17).
The 45-year-old rocker was performing in the ‘Raspberry Beret’ hitmaker’s home city at the First Avenue venue and at the end of his set he took the opportunity to remember the late pop legend before he played his former band Oasis’ 1994 hit.
Speaking to the crowd, he said: “I reckon you want ‘Live Forever’, yeah? This one’s for Prince, this is his gaff (home) and that so might as well dedicate to him, yeah.”
Ahead of the sold-out show, Liam had revealed he was very excited to be in the hometown of Prince – who tragically died in April 2016 at the age of 57.
Taking to his Twitter account, he posted: “Minneapolis home of prince looking forward to the gig as you were.”
When asked by one of his 2.56 million followers what his favourite Prince song was, he replied: “Purple Rain.”
Before taking to the stage, Liam played Prince’s ‘Sign o’ the Times’ to the crowd to set the tone for the night.
His set was filled with Oasis classics such as ‘Morning Glory’, ‘Some Might Say’ and ‘Slide Away’ and tracks from his hit debut solo LP ‘As You Were’, including ‘Greedy Soul’, ‘I’ve All I Need’ and ‘For What It’s Worth’.
Although they have been feuding since Oasis ended in 2009, it seems Liam and his estranged brother Noel Gallagher share a mutual appreciation for Prince.
Noel, 50, dedicated the same song, ‘Live Forever’, to Prince when he performed at Glasgow’s Hydro arena on April 21, 2016, just hours after Prince had died.
Telling the audience that Prince had inspired Oasis’ 2000 album ‘Standing on the Shoulder of Giants’, he said: “So, I was in a band once. We had an album called ‘Standing on the Shoulders of Giants’ and one of those giants was Prince. So, you’re going to help me pay tribute to the great man and help me do ‘Live Forever’.”

Kelly Clarkson wants to do a Christmas duets album

OHMYGOSSIP — Kelly Clarkson would love to do an album of Christmas duets.
The 35-year-old ‘Behind These Hazel Eyes’ hitmaker has already released a festive album ‘Wrapped in Red’ back in 2013, but has now admitted she is looking at doing duets with other artists for another festive album.
Speaking to ‘Entertainment Tonight’, Kelly said: “I will listen to Christmas music in June, I’m weird. I could listen to Bing Crosby’s record, Mariah Carey’s record, or hell, I love my record. I just love Christmas music. It’s such a classic sound. I know it sounds so weird but I loved that album. I had so much fun making that, all the musicians in it were crazy good. Since I’ve already done a full Christmas album, it’s be fun to pick some of my favourite singers and maybe do like a duet thing. That would be cool! But after doing a classic Christmas album, I feel like it’d be hard to beat, just because of how it all came to be.”
Recently, the singer admitted she would love to collaborate with Sam Smith and can vividly remember catching the 25 year old cover the late Whitney Houston’s ‘How Will I Know’ and she was blown away by his vocal talents.
Speaking to the Daily Star newspaper, she said: “The UK have some great soulful, gospel singers. You have Sam Smith, and Adele killing it. Sam is such a great talent, I would absolutely love to work with him.
“He had me since he covered ‘How Will I Know’. I was like, ‘Excuse me – who is this boy right now covering Whitney Houston?’ He is super super talented, I am so in.”

Johnny Marr’s new album deals with Brexit and Trump

OHMYGOSSIP — Johnny Marr has been inspired by the effects on the world of Donald Trump’s ascent to become President of the United States and Brexit in the UK whilst making his new album.
The 54-year-old rocker is putting the finishing touches to his third solo album, which is due to be released in spring 2018.
Marr admits the turbulent political climate has found its way into his songs because the influence of British residents voting to leave the European Union and Trump’s behaviour in the White House are hugely important to him.
Speaking in the new issue of Q magazine, he said: “I was trying to imagine an alternative society. Because of what had happened with Brexit and Trump and everything, I came into this record really determined to not let those f**kwits impede on my creative life
“But you’re living in this world and you can’t do anything about it. So much of the record is about dislocation. Whether it’s being forced by the political system or because of personal demons. I was trying to imagine an alternative society.”
When Marr was a member of legendary indie band The Smiths he and singer Morrissey were never afraid to tackle heavyweight social and political issues on albums such as 1985’s ‘Meat Is Murder’ and 1986’s ‘The Queen Is Dead’.
However, Marr may find that his close friend Noel Gallagher is not a fan of his political tunes as he recently branded musicians who sing about the news as “boring”, especially those obsessed with Trump.
When discussing the joyous outlook of his upcoming album ‘Who Built The Moon?’, the 50-year-old former Oasis star said: “I think that it’s very easy for guys with guitars to pick up those guitars these days and just sing about what’s on the news. I don’t know what the point of all of that is. I think to write songs in this day and age that are full of joy and hope, is almost revolutionary. I think that guitar music has become more about f***ing shouting, like Dave Grohl, what’s he on about? Green Day, and the guy from Queens of the Stone Age, what are they shouting about? They’re shouting about the f***ing news. Who wants to sing about the news?”
He added: “The news is boring. Donald Trump is f***ing boring. Politics is boring. The little fat guy from North Korea, he looks funny, but he’s f***ing boring. So why would you want to write music about that [stuff]? I think to write songs about joy and hope is f***ing revolutionary. There, I just said it, revolutionary.”
Marr plays guitars and harmonica on the track ‘If Love Is The Law’ on Noel’s new LP ‘Who Built The Moon?’, his third solo offering.

Camila Cabello finishes debut solo album

OHMYGOSSIP — Camila Cabello has finished her first album.
The 20-year-old singer has been working on her debut solo LP ‘The Hurting. The Healing. The Loving’ since she quit Fifth Harmony in December 2016 and, almost a year later, she finally feels ready to drop her new material.
Taking to her Twitter account on Tuesday (21.11.17), the brunette beauty said: “my first album is done and the butterflies in my stomach are fully aware (sic).”
Not much is known about the album but Camila recently admitted that she turned to her good friend Taylor Swift for advice while recording it and even played her some tracks.
She said at the time: “When I first went into the studio I showed her a bunch of my songs and she gave me advice and listened and said, ‘Oh this is really cool.’ ”
And it’s not just music advice Camila has been getting from the ‘Bad Blood’ hitmaker – who has previously dated the likes of Harry Styles, Calvin Harris and Tom Hiddleston – as she’s also been relying on her for dating tips.
Camila explained: “I feel like we have something really cool where we can just be honest with each other, and we can just be girls, talking about stupid crushes. It’s the best.”
Camila is yet to announce a release date for ‘The Hurting. The Healing. The Loving’ but it’s expected to drop early 2018.
And she can’t wait for fans to finally hear her “true voice.”
The American-Cuban beauty said: “Making my own music now, it truly is my voice, I’m able to actually talk about who I am, and a big part of that is my culture and my family … How I’m able to represent other people that are Latin is better because now I actually get to talk from my voice.”

Josh Homme: Malcolm Young is my inspiration

OHMYGOSSIP — Josh Homme has revealed how late AC/DC guitarist Malcolm Young was his musical inspiration when first starting Queens Of The Stone Age.
The founding member of rock band AC/DC tragically passed away on Saturday (18.11.17) at the age of 64, following a three-year battle with dementia.
And now Josh, 44, has revealed that it was Malcolm’s “robotic” style of guitar playing that he was trying to emulate when he first created the sound for his own band, Queens Of The Stone Age.
Speaking to Mojo magazine, the ‘A Song For The Dead’ rocker said: “I wanted to see what it was like when you just played one thing until you got lost in a trance. One note is so much more difficult than 50.
“That’s what I learned in [The Screaming Trees], because I was playing rhythm, I was trying to play like Malcolm Young, trying to play a riff like a robot.
“So I had the first Queens record written, this robotic trance stuff, and then my friend Hutch, our sound man who has turned me on to so much music, was like cough… and plays me Can, Neu!, Wire… I was like, ‘What?’ really disheartened.”
Since Malcolm’s death was announced, icons of the rock world have poured forth tributes to the late ‘Highway To Hell’ musician.
Bryan Adams labelled Malcolm as an “inspiration”, writing: “RIP Malcolm Young. Your guitar playing was a huge inspiration. Thanks for that #malcolmyoung #ACDC (sic)”
Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro also paid tribute, simply tweeting: “Rest in peace Malcolm Young x (sic)”, whilst Kelly Jones took to Stereophonics’ twitter to write: “‘Malcom Young the best right hand in game! RIP. Play AC/DC loud all day!’ KJ @acdc (sic)”.

Blondie inspired Noel Gallagher’s She Taught Me How To Fly

OHMYGOSSIP — Noel Gallagher’s ‘She Taught Me How To Fly’ was inspired by a conversation about Blondie.
The former Oasis star was discussing Debbie Harry’s group with the studio wizard behind his third solo record ‘Who Built The Moon?, David Holmes, and as the song came together it started sounding like the iconic new wave band.
The 50-year-old guitarist says Holmes was good at making sure he didn’t wander off making tracks that sounded like his former band Oasis, and encouraged him to do something completely different.
On how they ended up with the psychedelic “cosmic pop” record, Noel recalled to the Irish Independent newspaper: “It was a case of him pointing me in a different direction virtually every day. I would be working on a track and bits of it would be good, and he would say, ‘When you get to that bit, stop that and let’s move on to the next track.’
“You’d think he doesn’t like where it’s going and then you come back to it and your outlook on it would be different.
” He would do a bit of work on it when you weren’t there and you would come back and think, ‘God. This is cool. It sounds like Blondie now. I’m going to have to rethink this.’
“‘She Taught Me How To Fly’ came out of a conversation about Blondie.”
Meanwhile, the ‘One Way or Another’ group’s drummer Clem Burke previously revealed they once approached Noel to work on a track together.
The ‘Some Might Say’ songwriter asked if he could trade them for ‘Hanging on the Telephone’, but Blondie didn’t write the original, which was released by The Nerves in 1976.
Clem said previously: “That one’s a shocker for a lot of people.
“I approached Noel Gallagher for a song a couple of years back and the first thing he said was, ‘I’ll trade you for ‘Hanging on the Telephone” and I said, ‘Guess what? We didn’t write that one.'”
‘Who Built The Moon?’, which also features the Kanye West-inspired opening track ‘Fort Knox’, is released on Friday (24.11.17).

Smokey Robinson leads tributes to Warren ‘Pete’ Moore

OHMYGOSSIP — Motown legend Warren ‘Pete’ Moore has died aged 78.
Smokey Robinson has led tributes to his “brother” and original bandmate in the Miracles, who sadly passed away on Sunday (19.11.17).
Taking to Twitter, Smokey, 77, wrote: “It’s always tough to loose someone that you love. Pete Moore was my brother since I was 11 years old. I’m really going to miss him (sic)”
Iconic Motown Records label founder Berry Gordy confirmed the sad news and praised the late singer and songwriter for his “wonderful Bass voice”.
In a statement, he said: “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Warren ‘Pete’ Moore, a fine human being and valued member of the Motown family.
“Pete was an original member of my very first group, the Miracles.
“He was a quiet spirit with a wonderful Bass voice behind Smokey Robinson’s soft, distinctive lead vocals, and was co-writer on several of the Miracles hits.”
Moore was responsible for co-writing several of the Miracles biggest hits including 1965’s ‘Ooo Baby Baby’, ‘The Tracks of My Tears’ – for which he won the ASCAP Award Of Merit – and ‘My Girl Has Gone’.
Moore and Robinson formed the group whilst attending high school together in Detroit, Michigan in the 1950s.
In 2012, Moore was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame joining Robinson who had joined in 1987.
He’d also penned The Temptation’s ‘It’s Growing’ and ‘Since I Lost My Baby’ and Marvin Gaye’s biggest hits ‘Ain’t That Peculiar’ and ‘I’ll Be Doggone’.
The Miracles – who reunited on-and-off from 1955 until 2011 – were the first band on Gordy’s Motown to become a success story, and are highly regarded as one of the most important and influential groups in pop, rock and roll, and R&B music history.

Eurythmics classics coming to vinyl

OHMYGOSSIP — Eurythmics are to release eight of their iconic albums on vinyl.
The legendary pop duo – comprised of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart – will put out the records on Sony Music between April and October 2018, starting with ‘In The Garden’ (1981), ‘Sweet Dreams’ (1983) and’ Touch’ (1983) on April 13, 2018, followed by ‘Be Yourself Tonight’ (1985), ‘Revenge’ (1986) and ‘Savage’ (1987) in July 2018 and ‘We Too Are One’ (1989) and ‘Peace’ (1999) in October 2018.
It will be the first time that ‘Peace’ will be available on vinyl, as the original release was only available in two formats – CD and cassette.
They are also releasing an 11-minute unique video titled ‘EURYTHMIX’, which is a retrospective compiled and mixed by DJ Earworm and sourced from 23 Eurythmics videos from 1983 to 2005, including ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)’ and ‘Who’s That Girl?’.
Lennox said: “In the early ’80s, videos were a new and innovative phenomena, offering musical artists the possibility to feature interpretations of their songs through the combined medium of moving imagery and sound.”
The 62-year-old star said having eight Eurythmics albums on vinyl is “extraordinary”, whilst Stewart added: “To buy a vinyl album, you have to have a record player and you have to have speakers, and this is a great thing because that means people are going to listen to your music not on a cell phone, but they’re going to listen to it out of a sound system, which is what we all did when we were growing up.
“The important thing about vinyl releases is that people buy them and actually put them on the turntable and listen to a side, because we chose the tracks to be played in a particular order, and that was really important.”
Meanwhile, the pair are “flattered” to have been nominated to be inducted into the 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, along with fellow British acts such as Dire Straits and Depeche Mode.
Stewart said: “Being British, we never thought that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame had anything to do with us.
“So when we were nominated, we thought, ‘What?!’ And then we saw there were other British acts, like Depeche Mode and Dire Straits. They are incredible legends, and we’re honoured to be nominated.
Lennox added: “It’s lovely and flattering.”
The eight Eurythmics RCA studio albums being released on vinyl in 2018 via Sony are all available to pre-order now.

Sky Ferreira promises new music is coming

OHMYGOSSIP — Sky Ferreira has promised fans she will be releasing new music as “soon” as she recovers from illness.
The 25-year-old singer and actress has been battling with an unknown condition that has been “misdiagnosed” time and time again, but once she is back to full health she will start unleashing the tracks from her much-delayed album ‘Masochism’.
Giving her followers an update on Twitter on Tuesday (21.11.17), Sky said: “Here’s one of the several reasons why I can’t wait to put something out: certain people will be forced to come up with their own identity & artistic vision … The only reason I can’t put a ton of new music all at once is because I’m ill & have been for a while. I have to get completely better so I can tour & actually promote it. I was misdiagnosed for a long time & I’m now just starting to actually recover … I am still putting out new music very soon though & have been working on it the entire time. (sic)”
The ‘Red Lips’ singer previously assured her fans that she is dedicated to the creative process of her second album, and is raring to make songs she’s proud of.
The ‘Baby Driver’ star said being “at the mercy of other people” was partly to blame for the delay in releasing her follow-up to 2013’s ‘Night Time My Time’.
In a lengthy Instagram post, she wrote: “I have been very quiet about what’s going on with my music for a few reasons. Mostly it’s because I’ve been working on it. I have been working on several other projects. I’m very excited about it all. I was genuinely stuck at the mercy of other people before (for almost years at this point). No matter how hard I tried, it was beyond me.I couldn’t say anything because of the possibility that it would make things worse. Being silent or “politically correct” wasn’t much help either. It felt way worse tbh. It has been genuine tasking on my soul & so frustrating. I stuck to my guns & that makes the process a lot longer than you would expect it to. There are so many factors to it all that would be silly to get into. I didn’t wait this long to put out something that meets the bare minimum for some.GOD BLESS a majority of those people are now out of my way & those problems are being fixed … (sic)”

OHMYGOSSIP — Craig David received his sixth MOBO at the Pre-MOBO Awards Show on Monday night (20.11.17).
The ‘Heartline’ singer – who releases his new album ‘The Time Is Now’ on January 26 – picked up Best R&B/Soul Act at the bash held at Boisdale, Canary Wharf in London, which comes ahead of the annual ceremony held at Leeds’ First Direct Arena on November 29.
Of his latest award, the 36-year-old heartthrob wrote on Twitter: “Thank you so much! So honoured & grateful to win tonight! #TheTimeIsNOW #MOBOAwards (sic)”
Craig’s latest win follows his Best R&B Act, Best UK Newcomer and Best UK Single gongs from 2000, Best UK Act in 2001 and last year’s Best Male Act.
It comes after Gregory Porter was presented with the MOBO Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music.
The jazz singer/songwriter said: “I am truly privileged to receive the Outstanding Contribution to Music Award from the MOBOs. It is a great honour and I would like to thank everyone who has supported me in my career so far. Nat King Cole was my earliest musical inspiration so it seems fitting that I dedicate this award to him.”
Now all eyes will be on the main event, which will see the likes of Cardi B, Krept & Konan, Stefflon Don, Yungen and Yxng Bane take to the stage.
Stormzy leads the nominations this year with five nods.
The 24-year-old grime artist – whose real name is Michael Omari – is in the running for both Best Male and Best Grime Act, as well as Best Album for his debut record ‘Gangs Signs & Prayer’ and Best Song and Best Video for ‘Big For Your Boots’.
However, his rival J Hus is nipping at his heels as he has managed to bag four nominations himself in the Best Male section, Best Album category for ‘Common Sense’, Best Song for ‘Did You See’ and Best Video for ‘Spirit’.
Following closely behind with three nominations each are Jorja Smith and Stefflon Don – who are both up for Best Female and Best Newcomer – while Mercury Prize winner Sampha will be hoping to add to his trophy collection by walking away with the gongs for Best Male, Best R&B/Soul Act and Best Album.
Other nominees include Skepta, Solange Knowles, Emeli Sande, DJ Khaled, Drake, Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar and Travis Scott.
