Billie Eilish, Jon Bon Jovi and Katy among stars to join together to take a stand against AI in music

OHMYGOSSIP — More than 200 music stars have come together to call for the “predatory” use of generative AI in the music industry to be stopped.
An open letter – which was signed by the likes of Billie Eilish, Sam Smith, Jon Bon Jovi, Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry – was sent to machine-learning software companies, which called for tighter regulations on the technology in the industry to “protect against the predatory use of AI to steal professional artists’ voices and likenesses, violate creators’ rights, and destroy the music ecosystem”.
The letter, which was produced by the not-for-profit organisation Artist Rights Alliance (ARA), read: “Make no mistake: we believe that, when used responsibly, AI has enormous potential to advance human creativity and in a manner that enables the development and growth of new and exciting experiences for music fans everywhere.
“Unfortunately, some platforms and developers are employing AI to sabotage creativity and undermine artists, songwriters, musicians and rightsholders. When used irresponsibly, A.I. poses enormous threats to our ability to protect our privacy, our identities, our music and our livelihoods.
“Some of the biggest and most powerful companies are, without permission, using our work to train AI models. These efforts are directly aimed at replacing the work of human artists with massive quantities of A.I.-created ‘sounds’ and ‘images’ that substantially dilute the royalty pools that are paid out to artists. For many working musicians, artists and songwriters who are just trying to make ends meet, this would be catastrophic.”
The organisation then warned that unregulated machine-learning software would “devalue” the work of musicians.
The letter continued: “Unchecked, AI will set in motion a race to the bottom that will degrade the value of our work and prevent us from being fairly compensated for it.
“This assault on human creativity must be stopped. We must protect against the predatory use of AI to steal professional artists’ voices and likeness, violate creators’ rights, and destroy the music ecosystem.”
Jen Jacobsen – who is the Executive Director at ARA – said AI would only add to the “burden” for musicians who were already “struggling” with the streaming world, and warned of the consequences in store for both artists and fans if machine-learning algorithms go unchecked.
In a statement, she explained: “Working musicians are already struggling to make ends meet in the streaming world and now they have the added burden of trying to compete with a deluge of A.I.-generated noise. The unethical use of generative A.I. to replace human artists will devalue the entire music ecosystem, for artists and fans alike.”

Tate McRae says ‘maybe’ when asked if she’d duet with rumoured beau The Kid Laroi

OHMYGOSSIP — Tate McRae hasn’t ruled out collaborating with rumoured boyfriend The Kid Laroi.
The ‘Greedy’ hitmaker and the ‘Stay’ hitmaker, both 20, were first spotted together in January and have been on vacation together in Mexico, sparking speculation they are an item, and Tate giggled and blushed when asked if they will work together.
Quizzed on if she would like to get in the studio with the Australian rapper and singer – whose real name is Charlton Kenneth Jeffrey Howard – she laughed and then told Billboard on the red carpet at Monday’s (01.04.24) iHeartRadio Music Awards: “I don’t know. Yeah, maybe.”
If they are the real deal, Tate may end up writing a song about her “boyfriend” in the future, as she draws from her own authentic experiences when penning lyrics.
She previously told Uproxx about her 2023 album ‘Think Later’: “Honestly, writing for this album came a lot more naturally because I was pulling from real experiences I had gone through. Both the experiences that led to the confident, empowered tracks like ‘Greedy’ and the experiences that led to more contemplative, reflective, and nostalgic songs like ‘Calgary’. So many of my previous songs, especially those I wrote when I was first singing on YouTube, were from situations I imagined. The songs on this album are all so honest — no matter what the emotion was. I suppose, though, that writing sad songs has always felt easier because when I am sad, I find comfort in writing. Channelling my confident self needed to be a lot more intentional.”

Beyonce thanks Stevie Wonder for playing harmonica on Jolene

OHMYGOSSIP — Beyonce has thanked Stevie Wonder for playing the harmonica on her cover of Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’.
The pop star covered the classic track on her new country album ‘Cowboy Carter’ and she revealed Wonder’s involvement when he presented her with the Innovator Award at the iHeartRadio Music Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Tuesday (01.04.24).
Beyonce started her acceptance speech by thanking Wonder, saying: “Thank you so much Stevie, I love you. I love you and I honour you. I want to thank you for making a way for all of us.
“I’m honoured to receive this recognition from you, Stevie Wonder. Whenever anyone asks me if there’s anyone I can listen to for the rest of my life, it’s always you. So thank you, God bless you.”
Wonder responded: “I want to thank you for motivating the world to be a better place,” before Beyonce went on to add: “And thank you for playing the harmonica on ‘Jolene’.”
Beyonce then went on to talk about her award, saying: “Innovation starts with a dream. But then you have to execute that dream, and that road can be very bumpy.
“Being an innovator is seeing what everyone believes is impossible. Being an innovator often means being criticised, which often will test your mental strength.
“Being an innovator is leaning on faith and trusting that God will catch you and guide you. So, to all the record labels, every radio station, every award show, my hope is that we’re more open to the joy and liberation that comes from enjoying art with no preconceived notions.
“I want to dedicate this award to all the innovators who have dedicated their lives and their art to creating shifts. So thank you for your sacrifices, your powerful voices and your dauntless spirits.”
She also thanked her husband Jay-Z – who she her called her “rock” – and their three children before adding: “Thank you to Rosetta Tharpe. Miss Tracy Chapman, Linda Martell, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Andre 3000, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson and so many more who defied any label placed upon them. Thank you for executing your dream so we could all follow.”
The event also featured a tribute to pop icon Cher, who received the Icon Award, as well as performances by Justin Timberlake, Green Day, TLC, Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson and Tate McRae.

Ultravox bassist and Vienna co-writer Chris Cross dead at 71

OHMYGOSSIP — Midge Ure has led tributes to his Ultravox bandmate and ‘Vienna’ co-writer, Chris Cross, who has died aged 71.
The new wave group’s bassist – whose real surname was Allen – sadly passed away on March 25, with the news confirmed overnight by Midge, who admitted Chris was “the glue that held the band together”.
The 70-year-old former Ultravox frontman said in a touching tribute: “We worked together, we played together, made music and directed videos together.
“We were instant friends as well as Ultravox comrades. Even after years apart we managed to pick up where we left off like the years in between never existed. You were the glue that held the band together.
“You were the logic in the madness and the madness in our lives. It was great to know and grow with you. You are loved and missed old friend.”
Ultravox – which were named Tiger Lily when Chris joined in 1974 – released their final album, ‘Brilliant’, in 2012.
Chris was also a member of Stoned Rose with Pete Hughes and Mick Carroll, who later formed Ritzi.
Midge and Chris penned Ultravox’s biggest hit, ‘Vienna’, which peaked at number two in the UK, but was beaten to the top spot by Joe Dolce’s novelty song ‘Shaddap You Face’
The former previously said he’s convinced their chart battle with Joe made ‘Vienna’ a bigger success in the long run.
The 80s’ synth-pop classic was pitched against ‘Shaddap You Face’ in February 1981, and kept ‘Vienna’ off the top of the UK Singles Chart for three weeks.
He told Classic Pop magazine last year: “That ghost will never be laid to rest. It’s the novelty factor. That’s why people are still talking about ‘Vienna’ today. If it had got to number one, no one would be bothered.”
The band’s album of the same name also missed out on the top spot as it failed to overtake Kate Bush’s classic record ‘Hounds of Love’, but Midge insists he didn’t feel bad about it because he was a fan of the singer’s work.
He joked: “I bought ‘Hounds of Love’ so I probably shot myself in the foot there.”
Midge and Kate went on to work together, recording the track ‘Sister and Brother’ for his 1988 solo album ‘Answers to Nothing’.

ABBA land ‘multi-million-dollar’ deal to bring avatar show to Las Vegas

OHMYGOSSIP — ABBA are reportedly poised to ink a multi-million-dollar deal to bring ‘ABBA Voyage’ to Las Vegas.
The Swedish pop icons are said to be working with Resorts World to bring their hugely popular avatar show that currently takes place at the custom-built ABBA Arena in London to Sin City.
A source told the Daily Star newspaper: “ABBA has been secretly in talks for a while about getting a deal in Vegas.
“The music of Abba is well liked in the US.
“And the unique selling point of avatars makes it more than an ABBA show as the spectacular is something that could well wow audiences.”
It’s not the first time there has been talks of the show heading to Vegas, as back in 2021, the ‘Dancing Queen’ hitmakers were the subject of a fierce bidding war between venues for a potential 2024 avatar residency.
The group – comprising Benny Andersson, 77, Agnetha Faltskog, 73, Bjorn Ulvaeus, 78, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, also 78 – had MGM Resorts, Caesars Palace and Resorts World locked in a battle to host the ‘Waterloo’ hitmakers’ digital avatar show named after the record on The Strip.
And it appears Resorts World have won the bidding war.
It has even been claimed the ‘Money, Money, Money’ hitmakers could rake in close to £1 billion if they agree to a deal.
A source told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column at the time: “There is a huge appetite for Abba’s new show ‘Voyage’ in Las Vegas.
“MGM Resorts, Caesars Palace and Resorts World are desperate to secure it and have been locked in a bidding war over it.
“Abba’s appeal is global and it would be a huge showcase to have this new avatar technology on the Vegas Strip.
“Talks are in the early stages between promoters and the big three casinos here for entertainment.
“The word is that the major decision, aside from the money deal, is about the best fit for the sound facility and creating an intimate crowd.
“The dream would be for the show to move to the States after its London run and in Vegas, it’s believed it could make almost £1billion.
“Plans at the moment are centred around a suggested 2024 opening which would coincide with the 50th anniversary of their ‘Eurovision’ win and the release of chart-topper ‘Waterloo’.”
Bjorn previously insisted this type of concert means the run could go on forever.
He said: “Abbatars never tire. They can do 10 shows a day. No private jets. No riders. No worries about voices.”
The ‘Thank You For The Music’ hitmakers teamed up with an 850-strong team from Industrial Light and Magic – the company founded by ‘Star Wars’ creator George Lucas – to create digital versions of themselves for the concert, using months of motion-capture and performance techniques.
The concert experience opened on May 27, 2022, at the ABBA Arena, which is a state-of-the-art 3,000 capacity arena located at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.

Charli XCX reveals ‘quite different’ approach to new album Brat

OHMYGOSSIP — Charli XCX’s upcoming album, ‘Brat’, is “quite different” for her.
The ‘Hot In It’ singer has revealed she approached the lyrics on her follow-up to 2022’s ‘Crash – which is for all the ravers – as if she was texting her mates to have a gossip.
She told Vogue Singapore in a cover interview for the Pop issue: “Lyrically, this is quite a different record for me. I’ve written the songs almost in the way I would write texts to my friends or based on things I would say to them on FaceTime. We talk a lot about pop culture and music, and it’s been really fun to gossip about the songs we go. They’ll ask ‘Oh, who is this one about? Is this about a friend? Is it about an ex?’ It has fuelled this fun, gossipy narrative which permeates the album.”
The ‘Out Out’ singer already described the LP as “gossipy and hardcore”.
She told NME: “It’s kind of bitchy and gossipy and hardcore and very club feeling.
“It’s definitely one for the girls who like to party and sweat and rave.”
She continued: “I feel good about the music. Every artist says this about their new record, but I really do feel like this is my best music [yet]. I’m super excited.”
It also features a song about dealing with grief following the passing of her fellow pop pioneer and collaborator, SOPHIE, in 2021.
Charli told the outlet in a previous interview about the track ‘So I’: “It’s probably not as simply put as [a tribute] but there is a song on the record which talks about my relationship with SOPHIE. Essentially, dealing with grief is what the song is about. It’s very real. All the lyrics are things that I would text my friends – the kind of dialogue and the voice of this record is very conversational and very diar-etic for sure.”
‘Brat’ is due for release sometime this summer.

Beyonce unveils star-studded Cowboy Carter album

OHMYGOSSIP — Beyonce recruited a star-studded line-up for guest appearances on her new album ‘Cowboy Carter’.
The pop superstar has made her first foray into country music with the record – which was released on Friday (29.03.24) – and she brought in country legends Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson to sing with her.
Beyonce has recorded a cover of Dolly’s classic track ‘Jolene’ which features rewritten lyrics and the album features interlude by the country legend herself which references both Jolene and Becky – the name of a love rival featured in Beyonce’s ‘Lemonade’ track ‘Sorry’.
In the interlude, Dolly says: “Hey, Miss Honey B, it’s Dolly P. You know, that hussy with the good hair you sang about reminded me of someone I knew back when. Except she has flaming locks of auburn hair. Bless her heart. Just a hair of a different colour, but it hurts just the same.”
Willie Nelson can be heard on two tracks – ‘Smoke Hour Willie Nelson’ and ‘Smoke Hour II’ – while the record also features guest appearances from Miley Cyrus, who sings on ‘II Most Wanted’, and Post Malone, who joins Beyonce for ‘Levii’s Jeans’.
Beyonce also features Linda Martell – who was the first Black woman to sing at the Grand Ole Opry back in 1969 – as well as Black country artists including Rhiannon Giddens, Tanner Adell, and Willie Jones.
Dolly, 78, previously let slip that the 42-year-old megastar was considering releasing a version of her timeless song for the album – which part two of her ‘Renaissance’ project.
Speaking to Knox News, Dolly said of the rumours that they recorded a duet for the album: “Well, I think she has! I think she’s recorded ‘Jolene’ and I think it’s probably gonna be on her country album, which I’m very excited about that.
“I love her! “She’s a beautiful girl and a great singer.”
The ‘9 to 5’ hitmaker also confessed she has wanted the former Destiny’s Child star to cover the song for years. She said: “We’ve kind of sent messages back and forth through the years. And she and her mother were like fans, and I was always touched that they were fans, and I always thought she was great.”
The ‘Single Ladies’ hitmaker became the first Black woman to top Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart with ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ after it debuted at No.1 on the US chart, and ’16 Carriages’ has also racked up some impressive streams.
‘Cowboy Carter’ is the second part of Beyonce’s planned ‘Renaissance’ trilogy – following the 2022 dance record ‘Renaissance’.

Sheryl Crow calls Taylor Swift ‘a powerhouse’ for re-recording old music

OHMYGOSSIP — Sheryl Crow has hailed Taylor Swift as “a powerhouse” for re-recording her early work.
The 62-year-old singer has revealed her admiration for the ‘Shake It Off’ hitmaker for going back to her previous albums – such as ‘1989’ and ‘Red’ – in an effort to gain complete control over her old music.
Speaking to Esquire, she said: “I look at what Taylor Swift has done and think, ‘She’s a powerhouse’.
“The fact that she came up with solutions for how to not allow her music to be a moneymaker for other people when she should be owning it.”
The ‘Soak Up the Sun’ singer also admitted she felt it was challenging to be a woman in the male-dominated music industry.
She said: “There’s not a handbook for how to navigate, as a woman, a business that is predominantly run by men. Or for when you have a strong woman, how that challenges men and their feelings of importance.
“I have been advised on numerous occasions to please just tone it down. I wish I would shut my mouth, but I can’t do that.”
Previously, Sheryl – who has released her new record ‘Evolution’ today (29.03.24) – explained that she believes albums are “a waste of time and money” due to the popularity of streaming.
She told the May 2024 issue of Red Magazine: “I still think [creating albums] is a waste of time and money! People don’t listen to records as a full body of work, but I had all these songs that felt very timely… So, I thought, ‘Okay, I’m not going to make a conventional album, thinking about the beginning, middle and end.’ Instead, it’s a compilation of new songs.’”
The country star then shared how she found comfort in music when she was growing up.
She recalled: “It was what I went to when all my friends started drinking and smoking pot and I felt left out.
“It was an identity crutch, and when it came time to figure out what I wanted to be, music was the thing I was good at.”

Eddie Vedder: Pearl Jam have ‘one or two’ good records left

OHMYGOSSIP — Eddie Vedder thinks Pearl Jam have “one or two” good records left in them.
The ‘Alive’ rockers will release their 12th studio LP, ‘Dark Matter’ next month and the 59-year-old singer’s drive to keep following his “passion” is only strengthened as he gets older, particularly because he appreciates he is still around to enjoy the opportunities that some of his peers aren’t.
He told MOJO magazine: “The older you get the better you are at living in the present.
“The understanding you have less time is the biggest number in the quotient. The goal is to keep making music.
“It’s your passion, your special purpose.
“[At this stage] you lean on the relationships with the people who are still around. It really hits you when you are in a situation where that person would be there. And you’re sad for them that they’re not.
“But it makes you realise you gotta be healthy. You want to be around for your kids. You want to make good records.
“And we might have one or two left.”
A number of the group’s musician friends, including Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley of Alice in Chains and Screaming Trees’ Van Conner and Mark Lanegan, have passed away over the years and Eddie insisted people’s lifestyles are no way of knowing who will be “the last man standing”.
Referring to Mick Rock’s famous 1972 photo, he said: “Do you remember that picture of David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed? Who do you think would have been the last man standing? You would not have bet on Iggy Pop. So you never know.”
And Eddie has always felt “secure” within the “brotherhood” of his own band.
He said: “It’s a brotherhood. That was never in doubt.
“There might have been a few speed bumps in the road.
“But we got through those by looking out for each other. In that way, we felt secure.”

Mick Ronson’s widow regrets his solo career

OHMYGOSSIP — Mick Ronson’s widow thinks he should never have launched a solo career.
The guitarist – who died in 1993 aged just 46 – was encouraged to push for a career in his own right after his collaborator David Bowie ended his Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars era in 1973, and Suzi Ronson believes it was a mistake and her spouse should have taken time to work out his next steps for himself.
She told MOJO magazine: “He wasn’t ready to get thrown in there. It’s unfortunate that Mick didn’t have the sense to say, ‘No, I’m not doing that, I’d rather do this.’
“But he was as exhausted as David was. He needed to take some time off, relax and figure out what he was going to do next…
“It would have been a lot better if they’d given him a couple of productions and let him find his own way. And it breaks my heart.
“I wish I could have said to him, ‘Don’t do the solo thing.’ “
In summer 1992, Mick was invited to join David on his album ‘Black Tie White Noise’, and though he was “really unwell” with liver cancer, the musician was determined to record their cover of Cream’s ‘I Feel Free’.
Suzi recalled: “Mick was really unwell that day.
“He was in a lot of pain, but he really wanted to do it.
“David was very nice, very sweet to him.
“But it did cross my mind that it might be Mick’s last ever recorded guitar solo.”
Around the same time, Mick was producing and arranging ‘Your Arsenal’ for Morrissey and his wife thinks he still had “so much more to give”, having found his niche in the studio.
She said: “Mick wasn’t sad or mad or bitter, he didn’t know he was going to die.
“Morrissey’s record was one of his best-sellers. Mick was getting offers.
“He’d been taught a lesson and he was over it.
“He was only 46. He had so much more to give, doing the things he was so good at.
“And he would have got credit and he would have got paid.”

RAYE reveals she co-wrote one of Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter tracks

OHMYGOSSIP — RAYE has revealed that she wrote one of the tracks on Beyonce’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ album.
The BRIT award winner – who previously wrote songs for Beyonce including 2019’s ‘Bigger’ – has shared that she co-wrote ‘Riverdance’ on Beyonce’s new country music record.
Sharing a clip of herself singing the track on Instagram, she wrote: ““happy COWBOY CARTER day. What an honour it is to being able to contribute my small piece to this beautiful album, and to THE @beyonce who continues to inspire all of us. Track 23 : RIIVERDANCE , co – written by me found my beat up cowboy hat I bought on my 21st birthday for this special occasion.”
The record also features collaborations with Miley Cyrus, Post Malone and a cover of Dolly Parton‘s ‘Jolene’.
Dolly shared: “Wow, I just heard Jolene. Beyoncé is giving that girl some trouble and she deserves it! Love, Dolly P.”
RAYE, 26, quit her own label when they wouldn’t release her debut album and went on to make history by winning six BRIT Awards earlier this year.
The star – who has written for Little Mix, John Legend and Rihanna in the past – has previously shared her frustration with how songwriters are treated in the music industry.
She was quoted by the Daily Star newspaper’s Wired column as saying: “For an industry that profits off songs, you got these CEOs and big label execs living in their fat huge Chelsea mansions, living a beautiful life, meanwhile songwriters you are profiting off are broke, can’t afford rent and fighting over scraps of publishing that is sat in bank accounts for two years before they receive a penny, because publishers have kept it in there so they can collect interest and make a whole separate business.”
The ‘Escapism’ hitmaker also reflected on the breakdown of how singers and songwriters are paid.
She added: “Every single song that’s released in the world, there are 100 royalty points.
“The label will take, say, 80 points. The artist, in a good deal, will take maybe 20, 15, or maybe 12 and then producers get four points, but it has to come out of the artist’s points.
“And the songwriter doesn’t even get one point. It’s disgusting, the whole industry is disgusting. That’s one little example of what goes on behind closed doors where there is no accountability.”

OHMYGOSSIP — June Carter Cash’s daughter has defended Beyonce’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ album.
Carlene Carter, 68, a successful singer/songwriter whose family has a long history with country music, has welcomed Beyonce’s foray into the genre.
She said in a statement: “I’ve caught wind of some negativity over the release of Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter,” her new country album.
“As a Carter Girl myself and coming from a long line of Carter Girls, I’m moved to ask why anyone would treat a Carter this way?
“She is an incredibly talented and creative woman who obviously wanted to do this because she likes country music. In my book, she’s one of us Carter women and we have always pushed the boundaries by trying whatever music we felt in our hearts and taking spirit-driven risks. Sometimes the country music ‘establishment’ hasn’t been all that welcoming and sometimes this was accepted with open arms. Like Chuck Berry said, ‘it goes to show you never can tell’.
“I am here to let Beyoncé and to all those nay sayers know that I admire and love her and all she does. I am delighted to know that Carter spunk is in her just like it’s been through nearly 100 years of us Carters choosing to follow ours hearts, hearts that are filled with love not just for country music but for all kinds of music
“Here’s a warm welcome to the Carter Girl Club! It’s only a matter of time before those nay sayers become Bey sayers. With much love and support. Carlene Carter.”
The Carter family had some of the earliest country recordings, dating to the 1920s.
According to Deadline, they have been called the “first family of country music.”
