Marisa Abela praised for ‘phenomenal’ Amy Winehouse portrayal

OHMYGOSSIP — Marisa Abela studied Amy Winehouse as an artist in order to portray her accurately in ‘Back to Black’.
The 27-year-old actress portrays the tragic star in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s biopic and Iain Cooke, the film’s music supervisor, was hugely impressed with Marisa’s dedication and vocal abilities.
He told Billboard: “She honestly was phenomenal. I’ve got nothing but praise and admiration for her because she works so hard. She was a complete joy to work with and really positive and she just immersed herself in it. She had phenomenal pitch and timing and she just really studied Amy as an artist and also studied some of her influences. She was great.”
Amy died in 2011 at age 27 from alcohol poisoning after years of battling drug and alcohol addiction and Iain revealed he approached her old band as he wanted the movie to be as authentic as possible.
He said: “One of the things that we did was we approached her old live band early on — and we would have completely understood if they didn’t want to be involved — but we approached them to see whether they would like to come in and pre-record the live backing tracks and they did. It was just incredibly special and incredibly moving. It was her real band that played that those gigs who pre-recorded the music, and you can’t get more authentic than that.
“There’s a moment very early on in the film that Marisa sings ‘What Is It About Men’ — she’s just in her bedroom and it’s just a one-shot with nothing to hide behind. We knew that if we got that moment right, that the audience would be really in the film with us and in the journey. Marisa just did incredible.
“Amy was one of the most important recording artists of all time, and she’ll stand up in history alongside the greats that influenced her. She had lyrical wit and one of the greatest recording voices and most distinctive recording voices on record. I hope that we’ll go back and listen to her again, and rediscover and keep listening to her because she’s a classic forevermore.”

Dua Lipa ‘to perform at Wembley Stadium’ after Glastonbury triumph

OHMYGOSSIP — Dua Lipa is reportedly planning to book in the biggest gig of her career with a headline show at London’s Wembley Stadium next year.
The pop star fulfilled a childhood dream by taking to the stage to headline the fabled Pyramid stage at Glastonbury Festival on Friday (28.06.24) and now she’s set to go one step further by taking to the stage at the UK’s biggest music venue next summer as well as heading off on a US tour.
A source told The Sun newspaper: “This really is a ‘pinch me’ moment for Dua.
“Her last tour was as good as sold out, but it was an arena tour. To make the jump to stadiums is amazing, especially when she’s only on her third album.
“It’s looking like she will play one date at Wembley in June and a full-scale tour across America.
“It’s going to be quite an emotional moment, especially as Dua has been working towards something like this since she moved to London (from her native Kosovo) aged just 15.
“She now only lives a few miles from the stadium, so it will really be a coming home moment for her.”
The ‘New Rules’ star previously told the crowd at Glastonbury she had dreamed about headlining there since she was a child, confessing: ““I’ve written this moment down and wished for it and dreamt it and worked so hard and it feels good! …
“Little me would just be beside herself right now.”
She later added: “I don’t want this moment to pass me by. I’m not gonna get bored of this.”
Dua also admitted part of her wish was to land the Friday night slot so she could spend the rest of the weekend partying at the festival.

The ‘Kill Bill’ hitmaker, 34, was anxious about taking to the Pyramid Stage to close out the world-famous music festival but overcame her stage fright with her set at Worthy Farm, and thanked her team and backing musicians for making it possible.
Taking to social media after the set, she wrote on Instagram: “Tonight I faced my fears . Tonight my entire team made the impossible possible !!

Ahead of her set, there was a backlash about the R’n’B soul star being chosen as a headliner, with many claiming they didn’t know who she was, and the crowd was not as big as the previous nights when Dua Lipa and Coldplay headlined.
SZA was also hit with technical issues for those watching at home through the BBC iPlayer app.
The ‘Snooze’ singer was also around 15 minutes late to the stage as she had been at American Express presents BST Hyde Park the previous night.
No explanation was given.
Nonetheless, there is no denying her impeccable vocal abilities.
SZA debuted her new sci-fi, bug-themed set at BST, and it was no different for Glastonbury.
She left fans speechless spinning with blades, gyrating on top of a humongous ant, and clambering her way up a giant tree.
The Grammy winner treated fans to all the hits, including ‘Kiss Me More’, which usually features Doja Cat, ‘Snooze’, ‘Kill Bill, and ‘Nobody Gets Me’.
While there was no Doja, SZA threw in a cover of Prince and the Revolution’s 1986 classic ‘Kiss’.
During fan-favourite ‘Kill Bill’, the singer sang “I might kill my ex” dancing with blades.

‘It was just so cool’: Avril Lavigne’s 22-year wait to play Glastonbury was worth it

OHMYGOSSIP — Avril Lavigne admitted her first-ever Glastonbury experience was “so cool”.
The 39-year-old pop punk princess had waited 22 years to play the legendary music festival in Somerset, south west England, and she was gobsmacked at the masses that turned out to witness her play The Other Stage at Worthy Farm on Saturday (29.06.24).
She told the BBC: “I can’t believe it has taken me 22 years to finally play Glastonbury, but it was amazing.
“The audience was incredible, everyone was up on shoulders, holding signs and there were colourful smoke bombs going off, it was just so cool.”
She continued: “I’ve had seven albums and done seven tours and it’s just as exciting as ever.”
Pop punk has seen a resurgence with artists like ‘Good 4 U’ hitmaker Olivia Rodrigo, 21, leading the new age.
Avril’s landmark 2002 LP ‘Let Go’ soundtracked many teenagers’ lives in the noughties and is still adored to this day.
She added: “Everyone is still really excited by [the music] – I think that’s what connects me and my audience, it’s the songwriting and the songs.”
Whilst onstage, the ‘Complicated’ hitmaker reflected: “I wrote that album when I was 16 years old… I ended up moving to Los Angeles and writing this album, it came out when I was 17. I came over here to England the UK right away and everybody here has always been so insanely, incredibly supportive and I’ve loved coming here.”
Many fans argued that Avril should have headlined, and she could have certainly rocked the Pyramid Stage.

Pearl Jam axed two Berlin dates as the band continues to battle sickness

OHMYGOSSIP — Pearl Jam have cancelled two more shows due to illness.
Eddie Vedder and co will no longer be playing Berlin on July 2 and July 3, as they have “yet to recover” from illness.
Despite their best efforts to reschedule the concerts, they were unable to, and vowed to return to the German capital in the future.
A statement on X read: “We are sorry to share that the Pearl Jam concerts scheduled for Tuesday, July 2nd and Wednesday, July 3rd in Berlin are cancelled. Tickets will be refunded at the point of purchase.
“Thank you for [your] continued understanding and support, it means the world.”
In a typed-out statement, they expanded: “The impacts of this decision are not lost on us. We feel deeply that so many people spend their time, money, and emotional energy to get tickets and then to come see the band and it is heart-wrenching to have to disappoint you.”
The ‘Alive’ rockers had already cancelled their London Tottenham Hotspur Stadium gig scheduled for Saturday (29.06.24), due to band sickness.
Their last concert was at Manchester’s new CO-OP Arena on June 25.
Frontman Eddie has previously been forced to cancel shows due to vocal and throat damage.
In 2022, the “extreme circumstances” of playing an outdoor gig in France at a time when the hot weather had sparked a series of fires led to a cancellation.
The Grunge group said in a lengthy statement shared on their social media channels at the time: “To all those who were anticipating a great Pearl Jam show tonight in Vienna, we were too. However, due to the extreme circumstances at the last outdoor site outside of Paris (heat, dust, and smoke from the fires) our singer Ed Vedder’s throat was left damaged. He has seen doctors and had treatment but as of yet, his vocal cords have not recovered.
“This is brutal news and horrible timing…for everyone involved.
“Those who work so hard to put on the shows as well as those who give their precious time and energies to attend….
“As a band, we are deeply sorry and have tried to find options to still play. And Ed wants to play. There’s just no throat available at this time…
“So very, very deeply sorry.”
In 2019, their concert at London’s O2 arena was shelved due to Eddie completely losing his voice.

Paloma Faith calls out those criticising female stars who played Glastonbury

OHMYGOSSIP — Paloma Faith has hit out at the “way people criticised the women” who performed at Glastonbury this year.
The ‘Only Love Can Hurt Like This’ hitmaker – who played the Pyramid Stage on Sunday (30.06.24) after fears she could pull out due to illness – has demanded people give “women a goddamn break” after comments were made about the female headliners, including accusations that Friday night (28.06.24) headliner Dua Lipa, 28, was miming and Sunday night (30.06.24) closer SZA, 34, not drawing in a huge crowd and being the wrong choice.
The 42-year-old pop star wrote in a lengthy rant on her Instagram Story on Monday morning (01.07.24): “The way people criticise the women who performed @glastofest online is absolutely appalling.
“Personally, I watched women perform my fave shows of Glastonbury @littlesimz @janellemonae @sza and @dualipa were my faves for entertainment power and talent that I managed to catch this year and Janelle’s speech about marginalised communities got me in the heart.
“I think people need to understand that women are not on stage to be ridiculed and shamed we are there in all our female boss b**** power and we stand by one another. I want you all to know we read your comments and we absorb them and they aren’t good for our spirits. SO GIVE WOMEN A GODDAMN BREAK (sic)”
Dua hit back by simply insisting: “I do not mime.”
SZA, meanwhile, admitted she “faced” her “fears” about fronting the Pyramid Stage.

OHMYGOSSIP — Eminem will release ‘The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)’ next week.
The ‘Without Me’ hitmaker, 51, has revealed the release date for his highly anticipated 12th studio album alongside a terrifying teaser featuring the birth of a demon baby.
Sharing the video on X, formerly Twitter, and confirming the LP will be available on July 12, he wrote: “OH S***!!!

The album follows lead single ‘Houdini’, which dropped last month and debuted at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Meanwhile, the iconic rapper will release the record’s second single ‘Tobey’ – which is inspired by ‘Spider-Man’ actor Tobey Maguire – on Wednesday (03.07.24), with a video following two days later.
In the announcement trailer for the album release date, a woman is giving birth to a baby, who isn’t breathing until the doctor slaps it to wake up.
However, the baby’s eyes are completely black when they open, with a slithery tongue and even a pair of horns.
Everyone in the room shouts “Holy s***” at the horror, before the album name and release date are made official.
Eminem announced the new album during the NFL Draft in April with a ‘Detroit Murder Files’ crime show teaser.
The clip showed a true crime reporter discussing the death of Eminem’s alter ego, Slim Shady, saying: “Through his complex… tongue-twisting rhymes, the anti-hero known as Slim Shady has had no shortage of enemies.”
Frequent collaborator 50 Cent was then seen saying: “He’s not a friend, he’s a psychopath,” before the reporter continued: “The same rude lyrics and controversial antics may have ultimately led to his demise. Join me as we recreate the events that led to the murder of Slim Shady.”
Meanwhile, it was recently revealed Eminem is being tipped to headline Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage in 2025.
A source told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column: “It’s been a long time coming but finally, after years of trying, Emily Eavis could be about to get her wish.
“It’s by no means a done deal but with a successful comeback in motion a huge headline slot next year makes sense.”

The ‘360’ singer had a neon green wall in Brooklyn, which promoted her latest album, and was recently changed to read “ok, bye”.

The National get influx of Taylor Swift fans at their concerts

OHMYGOSSIP — The National’s frontman Matt Berninger says Taylor Swift’s fans get “bewildered” at their concerts.
The American rock band have seen an influx of younger fans – mainly Swifties – since the group’s guitarist Aaron Dessner started producing the pop superstar’s music.
Speaking to the NME, Matt said: “We get asked that a lot. we see a lot of Taylor Swift fans coming to shows and being bewildered by the first 25 minutes or so. We’ve been blessed with demographics that are across the spectrum. Then 10 or 15 years ago, a lot of younger people started coming [to our shows] – more and more women. The first 10 years was kind of a dude-fest at most of our shows, but that’s changed a lot. At our shows we have all kinds of old friends and they’re always different.”
Aaron started working Taylor on her sister records ‘folklore’ and ‘evermore’, which were released in 2020, and has also contributed to 2022’s ‘Midnights’ and this year’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department’.
Elsewhere, The National – who just rocked Glastonbury – revealed they would love to be in a supergroup with Ed Sheeran, IDLES, and Fontaines DC.
Matt said: “We spent a bunch of time with them and IDLES and Ed Sheeran recently, we were all together. It was Ed, IDLES, Fontaines and us all backstage on buses. Ed’s dad was there, sleeping on the buses and it was like a caravan.
“We did two nights in a row in Germany, and we were all watching football and talking about travel and guilt and Jesuit backgrounds and all kinds of stuff. So that was really fun. We all watched each other’s shows. That was like kind of the best two day festival run I’ve ever had. I was so inspired by everybody. That was the first time I’d ever seen Ed Sheeran live. Aaron knows him very well, so I was blown away by Ed Sheeran. It was it was incredible. We’re enjoying watching bands. We’re enjoying being a band. It’s all good.”
Asked if they would like to form a supergroup with them, he replied: “Yes. we’ve started one! It’s the guys with the pink hair from each band. it’s all the strawberry blondes. So it’s Joe [Talbot], Curley [Conor, guitar], Ed [Sheeran] and me. We’re called The Strawberry Blondes.”

Emotional Big Sean describes Eminem song Tobey as ‘full circle’ moment

OHMYGOSSIP — Big Sean has described his Eminem collaboration as a “full circle” moment.
The 36-year-old star appears with fellow Detroit native Babytron, 24, on the hip hop icon’s new single ‘Tobey’, and he has shared an emotional post revealing that Eminem’s ‘The Slim Shady LP’ was the first CD he ever bought.
He wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Not gon hold you, Slim Shady LP was the first CD i bought wit my own money at Costco.
“Me n Em bout 4 songs in now (DVE, No Favors, Detroit 2 cypher) but being on the Death Of Slim Shady is full circle.
“I aint know when i bought that, that id be one of the next 1’s out da city… let alone even know Em. A reminder to myself of how real unrealistic really is. (sic)”
The new song – which is taken from the upcoming album ‘The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grace)’ – is a nod to Tobey Maguire and his role in 2002 film ‘Spider-Man’, with references in the lyrics to the superhero blockbuster.
Eminem, 51, raps: “Tobey Maguire got bit by a spider, me? Must’ve got bit by a goat/ I used to dream as a kid I would grow/ To be one, I hope that I inspire hope/ For you to get what you desire most.”
The artwork for the single is an spoof of the viral meme of three Spider-Men pointing at each other, with an animated version of Eminem, Big Sean and Babytron recreating the pose.
‘The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grace)’ will be released on July 12, with the latest song following lead single ‘Houdini’, which dropped last month and debuted at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Donald Glover has shared the first track from his final Childish Gambino album

OHMYGOSSIP — Donald Glover has shared his new single, ‘Lithonia’, from his final album under his Childish Gambino moniker, ‘Bando Stone and The New World’.
The 40-year-old actor and music star has confirmed he will drop the LP on July 19.
Glover recently shared a trailer for a sci-fi film of the same name, which the album will soundtrack.
It’s inspired by Prince’s 1989 album which accompanied the ‘Batman’ movie.
The musician only released his last album ‘Atavista’ in May.
The finished version of his 2020 record, ‘3.15.20’, which boasts the new track ‘Little Foot Big Foot’, featuring Young Nudy, marked the penultimate release before he shelves his alter ego.
A Hiro Murai-helmed music video for the additional tune also dropped and saw appearances from Quinta Brunson, Monyett Crump, Rob Bynes, and more.
Speaking on his ‘GILGA’ show via Instagram, he previously explained: “The project I put out, ‘3.15.20’ that no one’s ever heard of people didn’t even know I put it out, it was originally titled ‘Atavista,’ it was supposed to be ‘Atavista’.
“But we put it out quickly, I didn’t master or mix it, I just kind of put it out. I was going through a lot … thought everybody was going to die because it was the pandemic. We put it out, we finished it, it’s ‘Atavista,’ we’re putting that out. But then after that, there’s a Childish Gambino album, the final Childish Gambino album.”
The star previously admitted he has been struggling to find the time to focus on music in between his acting roles because he’s busy being a dad to his three young sons with Michelle White.
During an appearance on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’, he explained: “It used to just flow, but now I have kids. Nothing flows anymore. […] Nothing’s as easy as it used to be. So I do block off time now because I’m like, ‘Oh, I want to be here for them at this time, and I want to make sure I see his game, and I want to make…’
“So that takes a lot of scheduling. But I have this kind of farm, I call it, where it’s like an art farm, where I just like… when I go there, then I get to be as ADD as I want.”
