The Cure announced first new album in 16 years

OHMYGOSSIP — The Cure have announced their first new album in 16 years.
The ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ rockers – whose last album was 2008’s ‘4:13 Dream’ – will be back with a fresh collection when ‘Songs of a Lost World’ drops on November 1.
They have been playing new song ‘Alone’ on their recent 90-date world tour, and the single – which is also the opening track of the upcoming LP – is now available to stream.
Reflecting on the song, frontman Robert Smith said in a statement: “It’s the track that unlocked the record; as soon as we had that piece of music recorded I knew it was the opening song, and I felt the whole album come into focus.”
He admitted he had been finding it difficult to settle on “the right opening line” for the first song of the album, and in the end it was ‘Dregs’ by poet Ernest Dowson which helped everything fall into place.
He added: “I had been struggling to find the right opening line for the right opening song for a while, working with the simple idea of ‘being alone’, always in the back of my mind this nagging feeling that I already knew what the opening line should be…
“As soon as we finished recording I remembered the poem ‘Dregs’ by the English poet Ernest Dowson… and that was the moment when I knew the song – and the album – were real.”
The cover art for the new album features ‘Bagatelle’, a 1975 sculpture by Janez Pirnat, while Cure’s longtime collaborator Andy Vella handled the artwork and design.
The tracks were recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales, and the group will be unveiled the full tracklist “over the coming weeks, having showcased some off the tunes on their recent tour.
As well as a single LP and CD, the new album will also be available as “a Miles Showell Abbey Road half-speed master 2LP”, plus a marble-coloured LP, double cassette, and a deluxe CD package with a Blu-ray including an instrumental version of the collection as well as a Dolby Atmos mix.

Ed Sheeran grateful for musical reach

OHMYGOSSIP — Ed Sheeran is “really grateful” his music has reached so many people.
The 33-year-old singer is celebrating his debut single ‘The A Team’ hitting one billion streams and he loves the fact so many will have “different memories and emotions” that they associate with his work.
Ed took Spotify on a tour of his favourite places in Suffolk to mark the milestone as part of their ‘Billions Club: The Series’ and as he ate scampi and chips using one of his plaques as a plate on the beach, he said: “This is what England’s about. This is my go-to meal on a Friday. Seeing [the plaques] all laid out is pretty mad because it’s been 15 years of work.”
“Everyone uses music for different things and everyone has different memories and emotions connected to songs.
“I’m really grateful that my music has traveled so far and I get to sit here and eat fish and chips out of them.”
Among the spots Ed visited on his tour was his secondary school and Framlingham Castle, which inspired his song ‘Castle on the Hill’.
He said: “I loved growing up in Suffolk as a kid. You just sort of run wild.
“This hill is where me and my mates used to come as kids to roll down. And then we used to come as teenagers to drink cider and smoke.
“It doesn’t get more British than that castle.”
During a stop at Decoy Studios, the ‘Drunk’ hitmaker showed off various souvenirs and items of memorabilia, including a photo with wife Cherry Seaborn taken on a skiing trip.
He said: “Her family are big, big skiers so she taught me how to ski.”
The puppet from the ‘Happier’ music video also lives at the studios.
Ed laughed: “Basically, I was on tour and couldn’t shoot a music video so we used the puppet.”
And as well as the Ralph Lauren sweater he wore on his first video, his ‘Bad Habits’ video pink suit, his first guitar and the panda head from his ‘I Don’t Care’ collaboration with Justin Bieber, Ed also showed off a pair of Gucci sunglasses he received from his friend Sir Elton John.
He said: “My favourite artist ever is probably Elton John.
“I essentially dressed up as him in the ‘Shivers’ music video and he gave me a pair of glasses for it. How do I look? Does it suit me?”

Stevie Nicks wrote The Lighthouse after Roe v. Wade ruling

OHMYGOSSIP — Stevie Nicks wrote her new song ‘The Lighthouse’ as a pro-choice anthem after the US supreme court overturned Roe v. Wade.
The 76-year-old Fleetwood Mac star released the track – her first solo single in four years – on Friday (27.09.24) and Stevie has revealed she was inspired to write it back in 2022 shortly after the court overturned the landmark ruling which gave women the constitutional right to a termination.
Stevie told PEOPLE: “I find it very sad, at 76 years old, I had to see Roe v. Wade taken away. Two years ago, when I realised the consequences of women’s rights that are vanishing, I watched a lot of news, and I was like a sponge – it just went into me.
“One morning I woke up … which, I never write when I wake up in the morning, and all of a sudden went, ‘I have my scars, I have my scars,’ so I just grabbed my notebook, and I started writing the whole thing.
“It was a long-form poem, and I didn’t know what kind of song that would be. I found an instrumental that I loved and within two or three days, I had recorded the song. I never redid the vocal – it’s an original vocal – and it’s taken me two years.”
The song features the lyrics: “Don’t close your eyes and hope for the best / The dark is out there / The light is going fast / Until the final hours.
“Your life’s changed forever / And all the rights that you had yesterday / Are taken away / And now you’re afraid / You should be afraid.”
Stevie previously declared she would have been forced to walk away from Fleetwood Mac if she hadn’t been able to get an abortion back in 1979.
Speaking in 2020, she told the Guardian newspaper: “If I had not had that abortion, I’m pretty sure there would have been no Fleetwood Mac.
“There’s just no way that I could have had a child then, working as hard as we worked constantly. And there were a lot of drugs, I was doing a lot of drugs … I would have had to walk away.”

In her acceptance speech, she said: “It’s so weird for me to stand up here and hold an icon award. I mean, to me, an icon is who I grew up listening to. My daddy would play Jerry Jeff Walker, Merle Haggard, Guy Clark, John Prine. Those are my icons.

The ‘Bluebird’ singer – who has released 10 studio albums over the past two decades and is one of the most decorated stars in country music – admitted that some days she feels like she is “just getting started” in her music career.
Thanking her supporters, she added: “Twenty years later and some days I feel like I’ve done it 200 years and some days I feel like I’m just getting started.

Van Morrison: ‘I never sing a lyric the same way twice’

OHMYGOSSIP — Van Morrison will “never sing a lyric the same way twice”.
The 79-year-old star considers himself to be a jazz singer because he’s “always improvising” and switching things up when he performs.
In an interview with The Sun newspaper, he explained: “I don’t see myself as being part of the rock and pop world.
“I am basically a jazz singer. No matter what genre I’m working in, I’m always improvising.
“Jazz is always forward moving and forward looking.
“I learned from the Louis Armstrong school. Louis said, ‘I never sing a song the same way twice.’
“That kind of stuck. And I never sing a lyric the same way twice either.”
Van likes to sing songs that are as “relevant” today as they were when they were written.
He noted: “When I do songs live, I often change lyrics here and there, bringing them up to the present.”
Van admits he no longer relates to his 1967 classic ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ and cringes when he sings it live.
He confessed: “How can a 79-year-old guy sing about something he wrote when he was 20?
“It’s basically a teenage song. I can’t relate to it much now, you know.”
Elsewhere, Van revealed he always wanted to record a duet with Willie Nelson, and was thrilled to do two songs, ‘What’s Wrong With This Picture?’ and ‘Steal My Heart Away’, with him on his latest LP ‘New Arrangements And Duets’.
He said: “It had been on my mind to do a duet with Willie Nelson for a long, long time but I didn’t get the opportunity.”
After sharing the same stage, the pair headed to a studio in Pittsburgh to get to work and hit it off instantly.
Praising the 91-year-old folk legend, Van said: “It was absolutely fantastic. Very relaxing and very professional. Willie came in and delivered.
“I played those songs for him and he was into them. There’s not a lot of pondering with this stuff. The less back and forth the better.
“Willie covers all the bases and, to me, he’s very similar to Ray Charles. I like his work and I heard he liked mine.”
‘New Arrangements and Duets’, which is out now, also features Joss Stone, Curtis Stigers and Kurt Elling.

Lady Gaga’s ‘unhinged’ new album

OHMYGOSSIP — Lady Gaga says her “unhinged” next album is “nothing like ‘Chromatica'”.
While Gaga has just released the ‘Joker 2’ companion record ‘Harlequin’, she admitted that her upcoming pop album, with the working title ‘LG7’, will represent a “time in [her] life” and “feels unhinged”.
She told Rolling Stone: “The pop album is nothing like ‘Chromatica’. It’s a completely different record. I don’t know that I’m even ready to talk about it yet, but it’s coming out soon, and I will. What I would say is, it’s all for me. It’s meant to be ingested as a time in my life. And I’m also really excited about this idea that I don’t have to adhere to an era if I don’t want to. I can have a few going at once. That feels unhinged and more like me or Harley. Or whoever.”
Gaga, 38, also spoke about the ‘Harlequin’ record, inspired by her ‘Joker 2’ record Harley Quinn.
She said: “It is my record. It’s a Lady Gaga record, but it’s also inspired by my character and my vision of what a woman can be. It’s why the album does not adhere to one genre. I called it ‘6.5’ because it’s not my next studio album that’s a pop record, but it is somewhere in between, and it’s blurring the lines of pop music. As you know, my collaborator Tony Bennett, who’s no longer alive, was young singing this music. It was just pop music. And I thought it was so interesting, the songs that were chosen to create this film. I wanted to explore what this music could mean today through the lens of her.
“We talked a lot about her being somebody that you can’t clarify, because she is too unpredictable and rare. [We] used genre as a way to express that something is rare — by not adhering to one and going heavily into the avant-garde. I’m basically saying, ‘As a woman, I choose to be whatever and whoever I want to be at any given moment, no matter how I feel. And no matter what you want from me, I will be myself. Thank you. Love, Harlequin’.”

Oasis to record live album?

OHMYGOSSIP — Oasis could release a live album of their upcoming reunion tour.
Liam and Noel Gallagher will reunite on stage together next summer for the first time since the band’s acrimonious split in 2009 and they are set to be offered a generous deal to record the gigs for a live album.
A source told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column: “The Oasis reunion is an historic moment and these concerts will be talked about for decades to come. Many people around the brothers think they have to capture the shows.
“A live album of the Oasis reunion could be as iconic as The Who’s ‘Live At Leeds’ in 1970 or Queen’s ‘Live At Wembley ’86’.
“It would capture the rock ’n’ roll alchemy that happens when Noel and Liam are on stage together.
“By the time they’re playing next summer, it will have been 16 years since they last performed together and the sound will have evolved – and that is special.
“The concerts are a long way off and Oasis are focused on those shows at the moment.
“But Noel and Liam would be mad not to record their reunion in a live album.”
The band are set to play a number of dates in the UK and Ireland, with their Wembley or Manchester dates tipped for the live recording.
There have also been recent reports that they could embark on a US tour.

Yungblud describes new album as ‘classic rock for 2025’

OHMYGOSSIP — Yungblud has described his new album as “classic rock for 2025”.
The ‘Fleabag’ rocker hopes to get younger generations into the genre with his “fresh” interpretation of old-school rock ‘n’ roll.
Teasing the follow-up to his 2022 self-titled LP, he told Total Guitar magazine: “We’ve really gone classic rock on this new record we’ve been making.
“Or at least how we believed classic rock should be played. It’s like new old stock, all guitar-based with four-minute breakdowns. The first song is nine minutes long with two guitar solos in it. We’re just gonna f****** do it, just because we can do it.
“Why not? We were asking ourselves how we can twist the genre. How do we make it sound new and how do we make rock guitar more interesting? We’ve got to this point where it’s like ‘Alright, sick, we’ve done all that, now let’s make a classic rock album!’ It will still feel fresh, though. It will be a classic rock album for 2025.”
Yungblud approached the record as if it’s the last one he’ll ever make.
He told Fearne Cotton on the ‘Happy Place’ podcast: “I’m almost approaching my next album like, if I die now, what is the one album I want to leave behind? Regardless of genre, is it cool, will it make 150,000 people move I’ve like literally just thrown that out the window and I’m like what does my soul want to say?”
The 27-year-old star – whose real name is Dom Harrison – says his debut tome, ‘You Need To Exist’, “facilitated” his new album.
He continued: “This year, creating that, it has very much facilitated the album as well because it’s kind of like this book has almost helped me write my next album because it’s kind of gone like, f*** it, someone’s soul captured on record, or in a painting, or in a book, or in a movie script – that’s when it truly like transcends time because every one of us has a soul, and very few of us let the world see it.
“I feel like the coolest thing about you is your soul because it’s individual; everyone’s individual, there has never been anyone else like you.
“So if you can really show it, and I am not talking about being successful, because success doesn’t mean having loads of money or being a rock star, or being an author, or being a thing.
“Successful means different things to everybody and think that is also part of success.
“I know that sounds like such a deep-levelled answer, but that is what I wanted this book to do; that is my soul, so I can show it.”

Serj Tankian ‘will see’ what happens with system of a Down

OHMYGOSSIP — Serj Tankian has teased he could work with System of a Down again in the future.
The ‘Chop Suey’ group haven’t released an album since 2005’s ‘Hypnotize’ and they went on a four-year hiatus the following year, with occasional tours since reuniting in 2010 and while the 57-year-old singer admitted that “as far as moving forward” with them, there is “no magic solution there”, he hasn’t closed the door completely.
He told People magazine: “We will see if that is something that happens. If everyone’s on the same page, there’s really nothing else to tell.”
The ‘Sugar’ hitmaker talks about why the group stopped recording together in his new memoir ‘Down with the System: A Memoir (of Sorts)’ and he hopes it will bring an end to the constant questions he’s faced about their return.
He said: “I shared a lot of stuff just so we wouldn’t be discussing it ad nauseum in the press, or back and forth.
“That is just, here’s what happened. Let me take responsibility for my own deficiencies here, my own things that I did wrong in the past and let everyone do the same, in a truthful but respectful manner.”
But Serj admitted “there was a lot more writing than was published,” and joked the process of penning his book found him having to “throw everything at the wall” and then “really minimising and taking out so you can create a very strong body of work.”
He added: “There are a lot of stories that were taken out, but I wouldn’t say most of them were, if it can be taken out, then you can lose it.
Tankian adds, “My conscience is clear in the sense that I shared the stories that were valid. I shared the stories that needed to be told, that had an importance to my life, my history, my ethics and principles, and the rest.”

Kanye West announces new album

OHMYGOSSIP — Kanye West has announced a new album, ‘Bully’.
The ‘Bound 2’ hitmaker – who released his two ‘Vultures’ LPs with Ty Dolla $ign earlier this year – has previewed the first track from the upcoming record, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, during his listening event at Wuyuan River Stadium in Haikou, China, on Saturday (28.09.24).
He told the audience in footage circulating on social media: “I got a new album coming out. The album’s called ‘Bully,’ and this song is called ‘Beauty and the Beast.”
The track featured a soft instrumental and Kanye singing lyrics that included: “I still think about it every night and day to try to stay away, to keep my audience / Don’t take this disrespect, I’m sitting here trying to redirect.”
The 47-year-old rapper’s longtime collaborator Mike Dean suggested the track was a leftover from Kanye’s 2021 album ‘Donda’.
Commenting on an Instagram post about the news, he simply wrote: “Donda leftover.”
Hours after his performance, Kanye took to his own Instagram account to share an image from the concert along with the caption: “BULLY.”
Kanye returned to China earlier this month for his first performance in 16 years alongside Ty to promote their ‘Vultures’ collaborations.
During the listening party on 15 September, the ‘Stronger’ hitmaker revealed he was planning a new solo album and debuted another new song, ‘Preacher Man’.
While it is currently unknown when ‘Bully’ will be released, Kanye’s releases have been hit by delays in recent times.
The first ‘Vultures’ record was released in February after being pushed back by months, while the second was due to follow on 8 March but didn’t hit streaming services until 3 August.
In addition, Kanye has previously teased albums including ‘TurboGrax16’, ‘Yandhi’, and ‘Love Everyone’, but none ever materialised as proper records.

Keith Urban doesn’t measure success based on chart positions

OHMYGOSSIP — Keith Urban doesn’t measure the success of his songs based on how well they do in the charts.
The 56-year-old Grammy winner gave an example of Taylor Swift’s song ‘Cruel Summer’, which she didn’t release as a single from her 2019 LP ‘Lover’, but quickly became a fan-favourite despite not climbing to the top of the charts.
After being included in her setlist for her ‘Eras Tour’ last year, it went viral on social media, prompting her record label to release it as a single in June 2023, and Keith says fans’ connections to the songs far outweighs chart positions.
Asked if he can tell if a song will be a hit, Keith – who released his latest album, ‘High’, this month – told GRAMMY.com: “I can’t even tell you how many years ago it was that I completely detached from what songs work, what songs connect, which ones don’t, or how they do it. And even more so now, the definition of success is so individual. That’s a good thing — that that definition now can have infinite meanings for an artist.
“The success of the song, if it only barely cracked the top 50, and yet you meet somebody at a concert who says it completely saved them and changed their life, you would deem that song an incredible success. Those definitions are changing constantly.”
He said of ‘Cruel Summer’: “It was on her Lover album, and it did nothing. But her fans really liked it. So about four years later, they released it as an official single. And then it was absolutely massive. It just hadn’t been discovered yet.”

Robbie Williams recruits Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi for rock tune

OHMYGOSSIP — Robbie Williams has recorded an unlikely rock tune featuring Black Sabbath’s axe-slayer Tonny Iommi.
The former Take That star’s drummer Karl Brazil has let slip that the ‘Angels’ hitmaker got the heavy metal legend, 76, to record one of his signature guitar solos on the track ‘Rocket’ that will appear on an upcoming “guitar rock” album – alongside a feature from Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes, 48.
Speaking on the ‘Percussion Discussion’ podcast, Karl said: “He’s got an album to follow that we’ve been working on.
“He’s working with various people, but I’ve been fortunate enough to do some songs with him.
“We’ve done a track called Rocket with Tony, which is very random.
“It’s great. It’s a rocker and really cool.
Tony has done his thing on it.”
Teasing the record, the 47-year-old sticksman – who is also Robbie’s live music director – quipped that the 50-year-old pop veteran is “a modern-day Elvis”.
He said: “It’s predominantly a guitar record. Let’s face it, he can do what he wants.”
Earlier this year, Robbie revealed he has “written loads of songs” and is feeling more “ambitious” than ever.
He told Virgin Radio: “I’ve got loads of plans. I’ve written loads of songs, I’ve got my film [Better Man] at the end of this year and I’m doing Hyde Park in the summer.
“I have never been busier, I’ve never been as ambitious as I am right now. I am full of purpose, and I am loving life.”
Since the release of ‘The Christmas Present’, Robbie dropped his dance side project Lufthaus’ record ‘Visions, Vol. 1’ last year, as well as his greatest hits collection ‘XXV’ in 2022.

The only other artist to have achieved the same feat is the Rolling Stones, who were inducted in 1989.
During an appearance on ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’, Cher fumed: “It took four of them to be one of me,. And I’m not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”
She went on to add: ““I’m not kidding you.
“I was about to say s******* you! You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars … I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.”

OHMYGOSSIP — A new Beatles film documenting the legendary group’s rapid rise in the US is coming to Apple TV+.
The doc ‘1964’ has been dubbed a “must-watch” for fans of the Fab Four – Sirs Paul McCartney, 82, and Ringo Starr, 84, and the late John Lennon and George Harrison – and will mark 60 years since Beatlemania took over the States.
An insider told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column: “The Beatles made history when they cracked America in February 1964.
“Apple TV+ have a documentary coming out which looks back at their rise — and how the band paved the way for acts like the Rolling Stones when it came to making it big in America.
“Beatlemania was crazy in the UK, but the Americans gave our fans a run for their money.
“People will remember the hysteria that took over the US when The Beatles arrived, and the incredible scenes where thousands of teenagers turned up to see them wherever they went.
“It was a moment in music history that has been repackaged and resold, and the result is genuinely brilliant.
“It is a must-watch for Beatles fans.”
The film features new interviews and archival footage of the ‘Let it Be’ hitmakers.
The documentary will be released on the streamer on Thanksgiving (28.11.24) – ahead of Sir Sam Mendes’ upcoming films on each member of the iconic group.
The 59-year-old director announced earlier this year that he would be directing four separate films about the Liverpool legends.
According to The InSneider, Harris Dickinson is to star as Lennon, Paul Mescal will play McCartney, Barry Keoghan is to portray Starr and Charlie Rowe will be Harrison.
The films are set to be interconnected stories with one from each band member’s perspective.
It marks the first time ever that The Beatles and their Apple Corps. company have granted full life story and music rights for a scripted film.
The movies are being made by Sony Pictures and Mendes’ Neal Street Productions company with a planned 2027 cinematic release.
It has not yet been revealed if all four films will be released at the same time or whether they will be staggered across the year but Sony promised an “innovative release cadence”.
