Britpop group reunite for first new music in 6 years

OHMYGOSSIP — Britpop legends Cast have announced their first new music in six years.
The ‘Walkaway’ group – now made up of ‘All Change’-era members John Power (vocals/guitar), Liam ‘Skin’ Tyson (guitar) and Keith O’Neill (drums) – will release the new single, ‘Love is the Call’, on Thursday (26.10.23).
Frontman and bassist John – who is also known for his tenure with legendary Liverpool group The La’s – said of the psychedelic number: “‘Love is the Call’ is the title track off the new Cast album. It’s a psychedelic pop song, full of bouncing rhythms with soaring melodies and harmonies. It’s a cosmic call to arms, for Love is the Call… Calling… Calling.”
It’s the first taste of their follow-up to 2017’s ‘Kicking Up the Dust’, which is slated for release in early 2024.
Cast headed to Granada in Spain to record the album at producer Youth’s Space Mountain studios.
The studio wizard is known for his work with fellow Britpop-era bands The Verve and Shed Seven.
According to a press release, John “hinted that the new album will feel like a missing link between his time with The La’s and Cast’s first breakthrough with their debut album ‘All Change’.”
It’s likely the band will also announce some shows after playing a handful of festivals this summer, and playing with former Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft, Shed Seven and Ian Brown.
In the meantime, fans can catch John on his acoustic solo tour performing Cast classics, solo tunes, and new material.
John played bass for ‘There She Goes’ rockers The La’s between 1986 and 1991.
He rose to fame playing on the band’s self-titled – and only – debut album.
He went on to become vocalist and guitarist for Cast, with whom he scored the UK top 10 hits ‘Walkway’, ‘Fine Time’ and ‘Alright’, with their first three albums reaching similar heights.
After forming in 1992, the band split nine years later, which sparked a solo career for John, although he would later reunite with Cast in 2010.

Keith Richards: The Rolling Stones are bound to have a hologram show

OHMYGOSSIP — Keith Richards admits The Rolling Stones are “bound to” have their own hologram show – whether he likes it or not.
The legendary guitarist, 79, admits he is undecided on whether he would still want to be alive if and when they have their own ABBA Voyage-style show with digital avatars replacing him, Sir Mick Jagger, 80, and Ronnie Wood, 76.
Speaking to Matt Wilkinson on Apple Music 1, he said: “Well, I certainly wouldn’t rule it out. I’m pretty sure that it is bound to happen. Do I want it? Now, that’s another thing. But I don’t know if I want to hang around that long enough, man. But at the same time, it won’t be up to me, will it?”
Keith’s comments come after Mick spoke about the possibility of the ‘Angry’ hitmakers living on with a “posthumous tour” with the band recreated on stage.
Although he didn’t state whether his band would have a hologram show, it’s not the first time he’s mentioned it.
He told The Wall Street Journal: “You can have a posthumous business now, can’t you? You can have a posthumous tour. The technology has really moved on since the ABBA thing, which I was supposed to go to, but I missed it.”
The ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ singer previously discussed how avatar shows offer endless opportunities for veteran acts.
Although he hasn’t considered whether the ‘Start Me Up’ rockers – who have been touring for more than 60 years – could have their own digital hologram concert in the future, he is intrigued by the “technology breakthrough”.
Speaking to Matt Wilkinson previously, the music legend said: “That would be stupid to me to give you a one-line answer, because I haven’t really honestly thought about it.
“The ABBA thing gives you this kind of technology breakthrough, which, I haven’t actually seen it yet.
“I was supposed to go and see it, but there was a train strike. So I didn’t get to go. I wasn’t going on the train, but … the traffic was horrible, so I can’t really answer that.
“Obviously technology is going to give you some of the answers to this, and who knows what technology lies in store down the road?
“We’re already in an AI world of doing this stuff, and you can do a lot of musical stuff with not very complicated computerisation, as well.”
In May last year, the Swedish icons launched their spectacular ‘ABBA Voyage’ concert featuring their ‘Abba-tars’ (holograms) at a purpose-built arena in Stratford, east London.
The 90-minute show features pre-recorded classics mixed with the band’s new numbers such as ‘Don’t Shut Me Down’.

Duran Duran and Maneskin’s Victoria De Angelis release Psycho Killer cover

OHMYGOSSIP — Duran Duran’s John Taylor and Maneskin’s Victoria De Angelis have a “bass-off” on their cover of ‘Psycho Killer’.
The ‘Girls on Film’ group got the ‘Supermodel’ rocker to feature on the cover of the Talking Heads classic after she and fellow bassist John bonded over their idol Tina Weymouth, the bass player of the new wave group.
Speaking about working with Duran Duran, Victoria said: “It’s such a wild honour to get asked by John Taylor and the guys to play on their album. I met John at a party, and we immediately bonded talking about music and bass. I told him Tina Weymouth was my absolute pinnacle of cool, attitude and incredible musicianship all rolled into one, and he told me he also started playing bass inspired by her and she was one of his music idols.
“I then got a call from John months later saying he was working on a cover of Psycho Killer, and he wanted to ask me first about playing on it. It was insane being asked by one of the greatest bass players ever to play one of my favourite songs with Duran Duran. Absolutely insane. I’m so grateful and honoured, it was so much fun recording together with John and he was so sweet to me and encouraged me to express myself and play it my own way. I’ll always remember that day.”
John said of Victoria: “She’s probably the most important electric bassist out there right now. I met a couple of the guys from Maneskin at a party and they said, ‘You’ve got to meet our bass player.’ She’s such a dynamo! I was like, ‘What inspired you?’ and Vic said, ‘Tina Weymouth.’
“So when Psycho Killer made the cut for the album, I thought, ‘I’m gonna ask her if she’d like to have a bass-off!’
The song is part of Simon Le Bon and co’s upcoming Halloween album, ‘Danse Macabre’, which is out on Friday (27.10.23).
The ‘Wild Boys’ hitmakers have also put their spin on Billie Eilish’s ‘Bury A Friend’, The Rolling Stones’ ‘Paint It Black’, ‘Spellbound’ by Siouxsie and the Banshees, and many more.
It also features new versions of ‘Nightboat’ and ‘Secret Oktober 31st’.
Duran Duran and Victoria’s cover of ‘Psycho Killer’ is out now.

Massive Attack’s guitarist Angelo Bruschini dies after lung cancer battle

OHMYGOSSIP — Massive Attack’s Angelo Bruschini has died.
The guitarist – who also played with The Numbers, Rimshots and The Blue Aeroplanes – had been battling lung cancer.
Sharing the tragic news in a social media statement on Tuesday (24.10.23), the band wrote in a touching tribute: “A singularly brilliant and eccentric talent. Impossible to quantify your contribution to the Massive Attack canon.
“How lucky we were to share such a life together.”
The musician was known for his unique style of guitar playing for the trip-hop collective – which comprises Robert ‘3D’ Del Naja, Adrian ‘Tricky’ Thaws and Grant ‘Daddy G’ Marshall – notably on their seminal 1998 LP ‘Mezzanine’, which featured the Top 10 single ‘Teardrop’.
The Blue Aeroplanes also posted on their Facebook page: “We are devastated to announce the passing of our brother Angelo Bruschini.
“Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. Rest In Peace Ange x.”
Angelo – who joined Massive Attack in 1995 as touring member and also contributed to their 2003 record ‘100th Window’ alongside the recently departed Sinead O’Connor – revealed in July that he was diagnosed with the deadly disease and suggested he would write a book about his amazing life.
He wrote at the time: “Twice now I have been told ‘Good luck’ by specialists at the hospital over lung cancer, I think I’m f*****. Had a great life, seen the world many many times, met lots of wonderful people, but the door is closing, think I will write a book.”
The Bristol-born star is also known for producing alt-rockers Strangelove’s 1997 self-titled album.
An official cause of death is not known at the time of writing.

The Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder quits

OHMYGOSSIP — The Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder has quit the band to “explore a slightly different path”.
Jeff joined the band in 2007 replacing original guitarist James Iha when frontman Billy Corgan reunited the band following their split in 2000 and he remained with the group after Iha’s return in 2018 – but he’s now decided to walk away for good.
The 49-year-old musician confirmed the news in a post on Instagram, writing: “It’s easy to say now that when I joined the Smashing Pumpkins 2007 I had no idea what I was getting into. The opportunity seemed to have come out of nowhere.
“I was at UCLA working on my doctorate in comparative literature when a close friend messaged me and said the Smashing Pumpkins were looking for a guitar player. Being a huge fan of the band, the audition was something I threw myself into. It was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. The amount of incredible memories created over the last 16 years with the band are almost too numerous to quantify.”
He added of his decision to exit the band: “Although it was a very difficult decision to make, I’ve decided to leave the band to make some space to explore a slightly different path. I want to thank Billy, Jimmy, James, and Jack for being both wonderful bandmates and even better friends. I will absolutely miss sharing the stage with you. I wish the band all the success in the future. I will be watching and listening.”
The Smashing Pumpkins added in their own statement: “We thank Jeff for his ceaseless dedication to the band and our great fans. Words can not express our gratitude and appreciation for the friend he is, and being there for SP in the good times and the tough times, too.”

Liam Gallagher boasts joint John Squire album is better than The Beatles’ Revolver

OHMYGOSSIP — Liam Gallagher has bragged that his joint album with John Squire is “the best record” since The Beatles’ ‘Revolver’.
The former Oasis frontman and Beatles fanatic and the former Stone Roses guitarist are putting out a record together next year, after Liam surprised fans by bringing him out for his pair of Knebworth shows last June to perform the Britpop group’s 1995 classic ‘Champagne Supernova’.
And now, Liam has teased that it’s better than the 1966 record – which featured the hits ‘Eleanor Rigby’ and ‘Yellow Submarine’.
When asked if it’s true their album is coming out in 2024, he replied on X: “It’s the best record since revolver (sic).”
When another user said that was a “big statement”, Liam wrote back: “What’s coming your way is bigger I’m being humble it p***** all over it.”
An insider recently told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column: “Liam and John have been friends for years but things really started to take shape following his sell-out gigs at Knebworth last summer.
“Initially they just wanted to get into the studio together and see how things panned out.
“The sessions went so well that they are now set to release an album next year.
“There has been talk of doing a handful of live shows as well around the release, but nothing is set in stone with that.”
Liam had originally hinted on Twitter (before it became X): “Super group incoming LG JS. (sic)”
And speaking to Matt Wilkinson on Apple Music 1 for the ‘Home Sessions’ series, the ‘Diamond In The Dark’ singer confirmed the pair were going to work together at “some point” and he’s hoping to sing on some tunes for him.
He said: “Yeah. Serious, man. But we’ve got things to do first, and he’s got things to clear up and that. But yeah, I’m definitely going to do summat at some point.”
Matt asked: “So you’ve actually had the conversation a little bit?”
Liam – whose return to Knebworth Park in Hertfordshire came 26 years after Oasis famously played to a record-breaking 250,000 fans over two nights at the outdoor venue – replied: “Maybe, yeah. Probably did that at Knebworth and that, I think, if I can remember anything about it.
But, no. There’s talk about summat. Maybe. But no rush. He’s my man, I love him. So if he’s got any tunes that need singing, I’m the boy, mate. (sic)”
A few years ago, Liam said his dream supergroup would include someone out of The Stone Roses and his close friend, Richard Ashcroft, formerly of The Verve.
In 2017, he said: “The ideal ones would be the guys out of The Stone Roses. I think they just split up, so that would be good.
“[Richard] Ashcroft would be good. There’s a lot of people out there, but the majority of them are all doing their own thing.
“But, if they want to do one, give us a shout. I’ll do it.”

NSYNC’s Lance Bass hints more new music is to come from

OHMYGOSSIP — NSYNC’s Lance Bass has teased more music from the 90s boy band.
The ‘This I Promise You’ group – also comprising Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick – just made a comeback with their first song in 20 years, ‘Better Place’, for the DreamWorks Animation film ‘Trolls Band Together’.
It came after they reunited on stage at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey last month.
And it looks like they are just getting started.
Speaking on his ‘Frosted Tips’ podcast, Lance teased: “I had no idea that as NSYNC we would be doing anything at all anymore.
“It’s such a gift that my kids are going to be able to see us do music and that kind of stuff.”
Lance recently insisted he had “no idea” the band’s fans would “go this nuts” for their comeback.
He told ‘Entertainment Tonight’: “It is beautiful, you know?
“To be this age and the fans are still this excited, it is a dream come true.
“I had no idea the fandom would go this nuts.
“It was pretty emotional, the first time we all got in the studio together.
“Back in March, we decided to, you know, get back together and have some fun and it was like no [time] had passed.
“But there was there was a lot of tears. It was just tears of joy. And it was just a beautiful moment.
“Like, time does so much and for us to finally be together, it just feels right.”
NSYNC appeared together at the VMAs 10 years after their final public performance at the awards show, when they took to the stage to present the Best Pop award to Taylor Swift.
Speaking about the reaction to NSYNC’s reunion that night, Lance joked: “I blame Taylor Swift. I think she sicced the Swifties on us and I think the Swifties and the NSYNCers just kind of created this tsunami.
“And I think it’s been so fun!”
Fans have been calling for NSYNC to go on tour following their reunion, but Lance insisted the group “don’t have solid plans” just yet.
He added: “I’ve been telling the fans, like, we don’t have solid plans right now. Because, you know, we’re waiting for the strike to end we’ve got things to do. “But [the fans are] definitely shaping our future.”

Kaiser Chiefs announce new album, share song co-written by Nile Rodgers

OHMYGOSSIP — Kaiser Chiefs have announced their new record, ‘Kaiser Chiefs’ Easy Eighth Album’.
Ricky Wilson and co have also shared the new single ‘Feeling Alright’, which is co-written by none other than Nile Rodgers.
Of ‘Feeling Alright’, Ricky said: “On the first day with Nile Rodgers, he said, ‘What have you got?’ We searched through some jams we had and this was a song that stood out to him.
“The band loved playing it round and round, and it must be fun to play but we never really knew where it would find a home. Nile turned out to be the best estate agent and found it a home almost immediately.”
The ‘Ruby’ hitmakers also have the Chic legend to thank for suggesting they get former Rudimental member Amir Amor – who has produced and written hits for the likes of Ed Sheeran, Charli XCX and Sam Smith – to work to produce the collection.
Ricky added: “He also brought in Amir, who turned out to be our housemate for the entire record. A good place to start!”
The 10-track LP will arrive on March 1, 2024, and includes previous singles ‘Jealousy’ and ‘How 2 Dance’.
The album’s unveiling follows a message from frontman Ricky admitting that they are no longer afraid of “failure” after having hits and misses over their two decades as a group.
He said in a statement: “We’ve spent the last 20 years making tunes, some have been hits, some have been the opposite of hits.
“As a musician, once all the worry and fear of failure is removed, all that is left is the freedom and fun. It’s the reason we started, so I must give you a warning, once you have heard ‘Jealousy’, you won’t be able to get it out of your head!”
The follow-up to 2019’s ‘Duck’ is set to contain even more songs that swap their signature 00s indie sound for dance-pop.

Christine McVie’s estate sells her stake in Fleetwood Mac’s hits

OHMYGOSSIP — The late Christine McVie’s estate has sold her stake in Fleetwood Mac’s hits.
Almost a year after her passing aged 79 in November 2022, like her bandmates, Christine’s shares in her songs have been sold, with the estate striking a deal with HarbourView Equity Partners.
The acquisition includes ‘Songbird’ and ‘Say You Love Me’, which she sang on, and Fleetwood classics ‘Go Your Own Way’, ‘The Chain’ and ‘Dreams’.
CEO Sherrese Clarke Soares did not disclose the sum they acquired the shares for.
However, she told Rolling Stone: “She’s iconic. Christine wrote those beautiful, melodic pop songs, and it was Christine who really kept them together as Fleetwood Mac’s guiding star.
“Being able to participate in the legacy of Fleetwood Mac but also to align with a female rock icon as a female-owned and run firm doesn’t happen every day, it’s special. Christine’s no longer with us, but she was obviously such a major and important force in the world of rock and roll.”
In 2021, Mick Fleetwood similarly sold his shares in their songs to BMG and ousted guitarist Lindsey Buckingham sold his publishing catalog to Hipgnosis.
Stevie Nicks also sold a majority stake in her publishing catalogue to Primary Wave in 2020.
Meanwhile, Stevie recently insisted Fleetwood Mac is “done” without Christine.
The 75-year-old frontwoman admits there is “no reason” to continue the ‘Landslide’ band without their beloved keyboard player and vocalist, who died after a stroke and cancer battle, because they “can’t go any further”.
Speaking to Vulture, she said: “When Christine died, I felt like you can’t replace her. You just can’t.
“Without her, what is it? You know what I mean? She was like my soul mate, my musical soul mate, and my best friend that I spent more time with than any of my other best friends outside of Fleetwood Mac. Christine was my best friend.
“When I think about Taylor Swift’s song ‘You’re on Your Own, Kid’ and the line ‘you always have been,’ it was like, that was Christine and I. We were on our own in that band. We always were. We protected each other. Who am I going to look over to on the right and have them not be there behind that Hammond organ? When she died, I figured we really can’t go any further with this. There’s no reason to.”
Christine was also the band’s main songwriter and Stevie claims the rest of the band couldn’t pen a pop hit like her.
She added: “Christine was the pop star. She wrote all those really super pop hits.
“None of the rest of us could write those songs. What would happen is we’d have to take the songs out, like we did when she actually retired for 18 years. We couldn’t re-create those songs. So we became a much more hard-rock band.”
Mick Fleetwood echoed Stevie’s sentiment in an interview earlier this year.
He told the Los Angeles Times: “I’d say we’re done, but then we’ve all said that before. It’s sort of unthinkable right now.”

Jess Glynne reveals she used to idolise Amy Winehouse

OHMYGOSSIP — Jess Glynne used to idolise Amy Winehouse.
The 34-year-old pop star took to the stage for an intimate gig at the Hawley Arms pub in North London and revealed that the venue was special to her because the pub was frequented by the late ‘Back to Black’ singer, who died in 2011 at the age of 27.
Jess told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column: “When I grew up, Amy Winehouse was an idol of mine and I’d come in here and see her having a drink or whatever. Now I am playing here and it feels like it has come full circle.”
The ‘Hold My Hand’ songstress performed performed new track ‘Promise Me’ at the gig and told the crowd that it was written when she was at a particularly low point following her departure from Atlantic Records.
She said: “The story behind this song is really important. A lot has changed in my career. When I started writing this album, I went to LA on my own and it was really lonely and weird.
“I had a lot of fallings-out and a lot of people were really negative around me and, like, beat me down to the point where I didn’t believe in myself. I remember sitting in my hotel room on the end of my bed and I started writing this song — it is called ‘Promise Me’.”
Jess is now signed with EMI and explained that she has now learned that self-belief is all that matters because everything “happens for a reason”.
She said: “She said: I’ve learned in life, as long as you do what you love and you believe in it that is all that matters. Expectation should not be a thing.
“I had incredible success with my last label in its own way and I think, everything ends and happens for a reason.”

Lady Gaga surprises U2 Las Vegas crowd with Shallow duet

OHMYGOSSIP — U2 surprised gig-goers at their ‘U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At Sphere’ show on Wednesday night (25.10.23) by bringing out Lady Gaga to duet on her mega-hit ‘Shallow’.
The 37-year-old pop superstar had recently checked out the legendary Irish rock group’s show at the new state-of-the-art, multi-billion-dollar immersive MSG Sphere at the Venetian with her boyfriend Michael Polansky.
And she returned weeks later, this time duetting with Bono and The Edge on her 2018 hit from her blockbuster movie ‘A Star Is Born’.
The Grammy winner previously duetted with U2 on ‘Ordinary Love’ during the band’s ‘iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE’ tour at Madison Square Garden in 2015.
Gaga’s latest live duet comes days after she jumped onstage with The Rolling Stones to perform their new song ‘Sweet Sounds Of Heaven’ at Racket NYC in Manhattan.
Meanwhile, U2 have just extended their residency due to “unprecedented demand”.
Bono and co became the first act to perform at The Sphere on September 29.
The Sin City stint was due to end on December 16, but it’s proved so popular, that they’ve added an additional 11 concerts between January 26 and February 18.
The Irish rockers have been performing their 1991 album ‘Achtung Baby’ in full alongside some fan-favourites at the concerts at the new high-tech.
The cutting-edge venue sees the crowd placed in a “360-degree sonic spectrum”.
Those lucky enough to get tickets will experience a concert like no other, due to the venue being built for cinema and performance, not sport.
Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, frontman Bono explained: “Most music, over playing a theatre, most music venues are sports venues. They’re stadiums, they’re arenas. They’re built for sports. They’re not built for music, they’re not built for art. So this building was built for immersive experiences in cinema and performance. It was not built for [sports], you can’t come here and see an ice hockey game.
“There are no speakers. The entire building is a speaker. So wherever you are, you have perfect sound is the plan.”
Guitarist The Edge said: “There’s nothing else like it in the world and won’t be for many, many years.”
He went on: “So what this has been designed to achieve is completely immersive sound. So you’ve got the main array of speakers is above our heads, but throughout the entire building are speakers that are focused so that you have the capability of placing the audience inside a whole 360-degree sonic spectrum.”
The musician also hailed the visuals as “ground-breaking”.

Has Emily Eavis just hinted Madonna is heading to Glastonbury next summer?

OHMYGOSSIP — Glastonbury co-organiser Emily Eavis has hinted Madonna could be headlining the world-famous music festival in 2024.
The iconic music event’s artist booker has confirmed they’ve saved a slot for a “really big American artist” to top the bill on the Pyramid Stage at Worthy Farm next summer and it appears she’s referring to The Queen of Pop.
Speaking to Annie Mac and Nick Grimshaw on their podcast ‘Sidetracked with Annie and Nick’, she shared: “I thought it was kind of taking shape, and then last week I just got a call, and this is what happens if you wait a little longer, because quite often we’ll be booked up from July. But this year we’re holding out for a little bit longer.
“And then last week I got a call from [a representative of] a really big American artist saying, ‘This person’s around next year’, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is incredible. Thank God we held the slot.'”
She added of the tricky process: “They’ll say, ‘Hi I’ve got such and such around next summer, are you interested?’ And it’s like, ‘Yeah.'”
The fact that Emily said the artist’s representative got in touch last week coincides with Emily going to see Madonna at The O2 in London.
She said: “It was incredible. I just was blown away by it to be honest.
“I walked away and I was like, ‘I’ve got to post about this’. I’ve posted about going to lots of gigs before, but I didn’t expect it to be quite such big news.
“Everybody knows that I’ve always wanted Madonna to play Glastonbury.
“It’s not a big news story.”
Emily also confirmed that they’ve nailed down this year’s Sunday afternoon Legends slot performer and that it’s a female star.

Artists who are signed up to TikTok’s ‘Elevate’ Program, such as Isabel LaRosa, Kaliii, LU KALA, and Sam Barber, will also be taking to the stage.
‘With In The Mix’ will take place at Sloan Park in Mesa, Arizona, on December 10, 2024.
Paul Hourican, TikTok’s Global Head of Music Partnerships and Programming said: “No other platform mixes music, creativity and community like TikTok.
“With In The Mix, our goal is to bring the For You feed to life for fans at the venue and on TikTok. Our vision is to create a show that is reimagined for the TikTok era and our music-loving global community.”
For those who cannot get to Arizona, the show will be live streamed on TikTok Live.
More and more legendary acts have joined TikTok as the app is a huge promotional tool.
For example, The Rolling Stones joined the app to make their back catalogue available to soundtrack clips.
Frontman Sir Mick Jagger also opened his own personal account on the app.
The band’s page comes with a guest playlist curated by the group, featuring 44 tracks, including ‘Start Me Up’, ‘Angie’, ‘Beast Of Burden’ and more.
Guitarist Keith Richards joined TikTok back in 2021.
