Courtney Love helped The Last Dinner Party censor their hit song for the radio

OHMYGOSSIP — The Last Dinner Party took advice from Courtney Love on cleaning up their lyrics.
The ‘Nothing Matters’ hitmakers had to come up with a radio friendly version of the track, and they had some help from the Hole star as they agonised over the change.
Singer Abigail Morris told Music Week magazine: “We met her at The Great Escape [festival] and at the time we were in agony over what on earth we were going to use instead of [the F-word] because that’s the whole point.
“After the show she stormed up the dressing room stairs saying, ‘I’ve got it!’ She had an empty packet of painkillers and she’d scrawled ‘punch’ on there.
“She was kinda pitching to us. We were like, ‘Yeah, thanks!’ We appreciated her passion.”
The group – whose debut album ‘Prelude to Ecstasy’ will be released next week – aren’t afraid to accept help from others in the industry, and Florence and the Machine have also had a big impact.
Abigail added: “Florence Welch was someone we spoke to who really made an impact on us.
“She has an almost identical story to us. She got signed at the same age we did, to the same label and has a similar approach to art and music in the sense of world building and storytelling.
“She was just so wise and kind and generous. She’s someone that we really look up to and she’s a really wonderful person to have on our side.”
When it comes to the band’s first full length record, The Last Dinner Party were keen to “come out the gate” with a LP that represented their goal of being “completely varied and genreless”.
Abigail suggested that means fans of their big hit shouldn’t necessarily expect to hear a similar sound on other songs.
She explained: “The record sets that precedent – we’re going to do lots of different things, so don’t be disappointed if there’s never another ‘Nothing Matters.’ ”

Michael Jackson Estate in legal row with MJ Live bosses

OHMYGOSSIP — Michael Jackson’s estate are locked in a dispute with a Las Vegas tribute show.
The company behind ‘MJ Live’ is taking legal action against the estate after they threatened to sue for violating trademark, with the firm asking a judge to allow the show – which features an impersonator performing the late ‘Thriller’ hitmaker’s hits – to continue running six nights a week at the Tropicana in Sin City, as well as performances in other cities in the US, and accused the estate of infringing its intellectual property.
According to Billboard, the show claims in the lawsuit they have staged more than 3,600 shows since 2012 but the estate only recently started to send cease-and-desist letters to venues asking that they cancel ‘MJ Live’s upcoming tour dates.
In a statement to Rolling Stone, the Jackson Estate said that they are not attempting to shut down the show in Las Vegas, but “stop it from going beyond the Nevada borders as it would be confusing to consumers and not of the quality we would authorise.”
In response, ‘MJ Live’ bosses declared the cease-and-desist letters represent “intentional and wrongful interference” in their business.
In addition, lawyers for the tribute show argued organisers have developed their own trademark rights to the name ‘MJ Live’ after using it for over a decade, and the estate have infringed those rights with the recent use of ‘MJ The Musical’ on a Broadway production.
They wrote: “Over the past eleven and one-half years … plaintiff has spent millions of dollars advertising and promoting its ‘MJ Live’ show.
“Plaintiff estimates that over 2,500,000 audience members, clapping and singing in their seats, jumping to their feet, and dancing in the aisles, have experienced the joy, excitement, and thrill of MJ Live.”
The legal team acting on behalf of the estate branded the lawsuit “beyond frivolous”.
Jonathan Steinsapir said in a statement to Billboard: “This lawsuit – including the claim that this impersonator show somehow owns a ‘trademark’ in ‘MJ,’ a trademark owned by Michael Jackson’s Estate and long associated with Michael and his Estate – is beyond frivolous. The Estate, as always, will vigorously defend all intellectual property rights of Michael Jackson.”

Johnny Marr slams Donald Trump for using Smiths song at 2023 rally

OHMYGOSSIP — Johnny Marr is furious that Donald Trump used a Smiths song during one of the former president’s rallies.
The Manchester group’s 1984 tune ‘Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want’ was played at the controversial politician’s South Dakota Republican rally last year.
An X user posted a clip from the event and wrote: “You actually hear The Smiths more often than you’d think at 2024 Trump rallies.”
Marr, who composed the song, just got wind of the clip and responded: “Ahh…right…OK. I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass. Consider this [redacted] shut right down right now.”
Several other artists have hit out at Trump for using their music at rallies and in campaign material, including The Rolling Stones, who sent stern warnings with cease-and-desist letters in 2020 when he played their music at rallies.
Trump’s ascent to become President of the United States and Brexit in the UK were sources of inspiration for Marr’s 2018 LP ‘Call the Comet’.
He told Q magazine before the release: “I was trying to imagine an alternative society. Because of what had happened with Brexit and Trump and everything, I came into this record really determined to not let those f***wits impede on my creative life
“But you’re living in this world and you can’t do anything about it. So much of the record is about dislocation. Whether it’s being forced by the political system or because of personal demons. I was trying to imagine an alternative society.”
Meanwhile, the 60-year-old musician previously lambasted David Cameron, the then-leader of the Conservative party, when he picked The Smiths’ classic ‘This Charming Man’ as one of his songs on an episode of ‘Desert Island Discs’.
The anti-Tory moaned: “David Cameron, stop saying that you like The Smiths. No you don’t. I forbid you to like it.”

‘I’m excited to get into it’: Alicia Keys is in the early stages of her next album

OHMYGOSSIP — Alicia Keys says her new album is going to be “one of the best ones I’ve ever done”.
As well as new music for her Broadway show ‘Hell’s Kitchen’, which is loosely based on her life, the ‘If I Ain’t Got You’ hitmaker is also in the early stages of her 10th studio album.
Speaking to VIBE, she said: “I think that’s what is so cool about Hell’s Kitchen. There is new music with Hell’s Kitchen and there’s also some of your favorites, but the way that it’s done, you will never expect it.
“It’s not going to be the way you expect it to be, but when you figure out what it is, you’re going to be like, ‘Wow. First of all, I’ve always loved that song and I’m hearing it in a new way, or it has a new meaning to me.’ I love how the music is a part of Hell’s Kitchen. It’s not normal, in a great way, but you still get what you’re looking for. That’s a part of it. You’re going to hear some new music, which is exciting.”
The ‘No One’ hitmaker confirmed she’s “in the process” of making her follow-up to her eighth studio album, 2021’s ‘Keys’. Alicia’s ninth album was the Christmas collection ‘Santa Baby’ in 2022.
She added: “I’m excited about new music through my own label, Alicia Keys Records, which I love.
“I feel like sonically this one is going to be one of the best ones I’ve ever done. I feel there’s going to be melodies, really strong, very memorable, [and] very powerful. It’s going to feel good. I’m in the process of creating it, so even though I don’t fully know, but I know 2024 is going to go good. I’m excited to get into it.”
The 42-year-old singer also told WWD: “I’m going to start to work on the next body of work over these next couple of months.
“And I’m excited to really just take all of the essences and energies and continue to explore where music takes me in its most truthful form.”

Liam Gallagher brands Dua Lipa ‘jealous’ after she calls Britpop acts ‘obnoxious’

OHMYGOSSIP — Liam Gallagher has branded Dua Lipa “jealous” after she blasted the “obnoxious” behaviour of the likes of Oasis and Blur in the 1990s.
The ‘Dance The Night’ hitmaker heaped praise on the iconic Britpop acts but insisted while they have influenced her upcoming new album, she makes a conscious choice to “separate the art from the person”.
Asked if she’s met either of the bands, she recently told Rolling Stone magazine: “I haven’t had any encounters with them, actually.
“Sometimes you have to separate the art from the person… It’s more like the music element, the aspect of it that I’m really connected to.
“The way that [some Britpop artists] acted, the things that they’ve done, they’re obnoxious for sure. That’s their whole thing.”
The 28-year-old singer pondered the way people expected rock stars to behave in the past, and insisted things needed to change.
She added: “There’s so much toxicity in the way people wanted their artists or their musicians.
“If they weren’t like that, they would’ve been seen as boring, and I think that’s such a bad way to see things.”
Now, former Oasis frontman Liam, 51, has responded to a social media user who asked what he thought of the ‘Houdini’ hitmaker’s remarks.
The X user posted: “Dua Lipa said that bands like Oasis and Blur’s behaviour are “obnoxious”. What do you think about that?”
To which, Liam replied: “She’s just jealous.”
The user then laid into the ‘Wonderwall’ hitmaker and insisted Dua has no reason to be “jealous” of him or the likes of Damon Albarn and Noel Gallagher.
They responded: “Come off it, Dua Lipa’s one of the biggest pop stars on the planet – she’s not jealous of you and she has a fair point Liam. You and Noel were utterly obnoxious in the ’90s and ’00s, and many other men in Britpop bands were misogynistic [redacted].”
Clarifying his comment, Liam wrote back: “She’s jealous we can swear and tell people to [redacted] off and she can’t.”
Despite calling out their behaviour, Dua took inspiration from Oasis and Blur on her third album.
She explained to the publication: “This record feels a bit more raw. I want to capture the essence of youth and freedom and having fun and just letting things happen, whether it’s good or bad.
“You can’t change it. You just have to roll with the punches of whatever’s happening in your life.”
The Grammy winner was even directly inspired by Liam’s solo tune ‘I’m Free’ from his 2022 LP ‘C’MON YOU KNOW’ and recruited his “rave consultant” for the song, Danny L Harle, as one of the producers on her psychedelic new record.

Billy Joel announces first single in almost two decades

OHMYGOSSIP — Billy Joel has announced his first solo single in 17 years.
The ‘Piano Man’ legend will drop new track ‘Turn The Lights Back On’ – his first since 2007’s ‘All My Life’ and only his second since 1993 – on all streaming platforms as well as a limited edition vinyl on February 1.
The single – which will be released via Columbia Records – will be accompanied by a lyric video on his official YouTube Channel.
He penned the track with Freddy Wexler – the Grammy-nominated songwriter who also produced the track – alongside Arthur Bacon and Wayne Hector.
The song features the lyrics: “Did I wait too long… to turn the lights back on?”
Last month, the 74-year-old musician started teasing the possibility of new music – his first new material in almost two decades – with a video of himself talking on stage.
In the clip shared on his official TikTok account, he said: “I have good news, I have bad news, I’ll give you the bad news first. We don’t have anything new to play for you.
“The good news is you don’t have to sit through something you have no idea what it is!
“Although … we got a little something we’re working on you might hear some time.”
It’s not clear if the new single is simply a one off, or if the track will be followed by more songs or even a full album.
However, in the past the music icon has explained his decision to stop recording new material.
He recently told the New Yorker magazine: “Some people think it’s because I’m lazy or I’m just being contrary…
“But, no, I think it’s just — I’ve had my say…
“I’m not crazy about going into a recording studio and doing that kind of life again, or taking on another project where there’s other people involved, arrangers and orchestrators and conductors and producers.
“I don’t want to deal with it.”

Ozzy Osbourne to play 2 farewell shows to ‘say goodbye’ to fans but he ‘wont tour again’

OHMYGOSSIP — Ozzy Osbourne will play two more shows to “say goodbye” to his fans.
The 75-year-old rocker’s wife Sharon Osbourne has confirmed the Black Sabbath frontman won’t tour again, but he is keen to put on a couple of farewell performances to wave goodbye to his die-hard supporters.
Speaking at her live show at London’s The Fortune Theatre on Sunday night (21.01.24), Sharon – who has children Aimee, 40, Kelly, 39, and 38-year-old Jack with Ozzy – said: “He won’t tour again but we are planning on doing two more shows to say goodbye as he feels like, ‘I have never said goodbye to my fans and I want to say goodbye.’
“His voice is still absolutely perfect. And all the time he has been off he still does his singing lessons. Even if you don’t like his music, you can’t not like Ozzy.”
Sharon also dropped a huge hint that Ozzy – who has been unable to perform live in recent months due to a string of health issues, including Parkinson’s disease and problems with his spine – will play the two gigs in Aston, Birmingham, at Villa Park, the home of Premier League giants Aston Villa.
She said: “We will do it in Aston Villa where Ozzy is from.”
In December, Ozzy admitted he was determined to perform again if he was able to.
He told Rolling Stone magazine: “I’m taking it one day at a time, and if I can perform again, I will.
“But it’s been like saying farewell to the best relationship of my life. At the start of my illness, when I stopped touring, I was really [annoyed] with myself, the doctors, and the world.
“But as time has gone on, I’ve just gone, ‘Well, maybe I’ve just got to accept that fact.’ ”

Yungblud and Lil Yachty tease new collaboration

OHMYGOSSIP — Yungblud and Lil Yachty appear to be teasing a collaboration.
A picture of the ‘Fleabag’ rocker and the ‘DipSet’ rapper behind the scenes working on the secret project they’ve been working on in Atlanta, Georgia has been released.
The pair can be seen sitting in directors’ chairs on what looks like a music video set.
No further details are known other than they are “working on something together”.
Yungblud recently teamed up with Bring Me The Horizon on their second song together, ‘Happier’, which follows 2020’s ‘Obey’.
The 26-year-old star – whose birth name is Dominic Richard Harrison – also released the singles ‘Lowlife’ and ‘Hated’ last year.
As for Yachty, also 26, whose real name is Miles Parks McCollum, he swapped out his signature trap style for psychedelic rock-influenced tunes on his fifth studio album, ‘Let’s Start Here’, released last January.
In 2022, Yungblud revealed he had a “full psychedelic rock album” ready and waiting to be released.
He said he wants to release it in one go without any singles.
He told Billy Corgan’s ‘Thirty-Three With William Patrick Corgan’ podcast: “I’ve got another album – I don’t know when it’s going to come out.
“It was [recorded around] New Year’s Day 2021… we made a full psychedelic rock album in a month and it’s just sitting there, and I don’t know when it will come out yet.”
He continued: “I just want to kind of drop it and let it be a thing. I don’t want to work a psychedelic rock album. There’s no singles, just one kind of feeling the whole way through that I just want to drop at some point.
“Everyone is going to ask me what the single is – I just want to let it be.”
As both artists have been inspired by the same genre, it suggests something psychedelic is on the way.
The ‘Funeral’ rocker’s last studio album was 2022’s ‘Yungblud’.

Ariana Grande ‘overwhelmed and moved’ by the reaction to Yes, And? as its tops chart

OHMYGOSSIP — Ariana Grande is “so emotional” after ‘Yes, And?’ topped the chart.
The 30-year-old pop superstar admits it’s “overwhelming and so sincerely moving” that so many of her fans connected with the lyrics to her comeback single, which became her eighth number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
She gushed on her Instagram Stories on Monday night (22.01.24): “I am so so so…… so emotional.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to my fans, the most incredible angels in the world, for the love you have shown this song and me.”
She continued: “It is overwhelming and so sincerely moving to see how many of you this song has resonated with and it is such a gift to feel so seen and held by you!
“Thank you for your positivity, for your support and for everything. You have no idea how much you mean to me! This is absolutely because of and entirely for you. Thank you!”
The hit is the lead single to Ariana’s upcoming album ‘Eternal Sunshine’, which is scheduled for release on March 8, 2024.
The title is seemingly a tribute to her late former boyfriend, rapper Mac Miller, whom she dated from 2016 to 2018.
It’s named after the 2004 film ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’.
Mac – who tragically died from an accidental overdose aged 26 in September 2018 – was a huge fan of the flick and Ariana loves Jim.
Speaking to Complex in 2013, he said: “I love Jim Carrey when he’s being serious. He killed this role. Whenever I’m talking to a girl, I always tell them to watch Eternal Sunshine. It cuts deep.”

Megan Thee Stallion to drop new song Hiss this week

OHMYGOSSIP — Megan Thee Stallion has another snake-themed tune on the way this Friday (26.01.24) called ‘Hiss’.
Following the release of November’s ‘Cobra’, which also has a metal version featuring Spiritbox, the Houston rapper has unveiled the artwork – a painting of herself with a white snake around her – and release date for her second single to be independently released.
Megan recently inked a distribution deal with Warner Music Group – whilst retaining ownership of her music.
The ‘Savage’ hitmaker managed to secure a contract with the major label that enables her to still be an independent artist to some degree.
The 28-year-old star released her previous LPs, 2020’s ‘Good News’ and 2022’s ‘Traumazine’ on 300 Entertainment and 1501 Certified, but in October, she told fans she no longer had a record deal so would be bringing out her next record independently.
Speaking on Instagram Live, she said: “This part of my album is definitely very much funded by Megan Thee Stallion because y’know… we tryna get off… y’all know what’s the tea.
“But I have no label right now and we’re doing everything funded by Megan Thee Stallion’s pocket. The budget is coming from me … Hot Girl Productions. It’s all coming straight from Megan Thee Stallion – Megan Thee Stallion[‘s] brain, wallet… we in my pockets, hotties, so let’s do our big one.
“We’re really doing our big one and I’m so excited. We’re doing something for the first time independently since it was just me and my mama. I’m so excited ’cause it’s literally just me this go round until we sign to a new label. But I don’t want to sign to a new label right now because I just want to do it myself.”
Megan – who previously took legal action against 1501 Certified Entertainment for allegedly trying to “interfere” with her control over her music and for allegedly trying to keep her locked into a contract – teased her next record will mark a new chapter.
She told Billboard: “It’s definitely coming very soon. I’m really excited about this chapter of my life because I feel like I’m finally closing all the old chapters, and now I’m starting with a blank slate. Very fresh, very new. I think Thee Hotties are gonna be so excited. I’m trying different things. I got a lot of things that I produced with Ju and with some new producers.”
‘Cobra’ was symbolic of Megan shedding her skin like a snake and starting again.

Rick Wakeman announces final solo tour

OHMYGOSSIP — Rick Wakeman is bidding farewell to touring after his latest solo jaunt.
The prog legend’s iconic one-man piano and keyboard shows are set to conclude in 2024.
Rick – the renowned classical keyboardist known for his tenures with Yes and his session work for David Bowie, Sir Elton John, Marc Bolan, Cat Stevens, and Lou Reed – has just announced a set of North American dates for March, with more to follow later this year, and he also has shows in South America to complete in April before he retires from the stage.
In a statement, he said: “I always planned to stop touring by my 77th birthday – for those of you who wish to send me a card, it’s May 18th! – but there is so much to fit in before then that I’m having to make plans now, and so my final one-man shows will have to cease by that date.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed performing the various one-man shows, but it’s time to call it a day.
“I intend to throw in the best of what I have done in the past, plus a few new surprises on the way, and possibly even the odd guest joining me on the odd occasion.
“The plan is not to perform at the same venue twice throughout this period, so whatever venue you are hopefully thinking of coming to, it will be the last performance there — and I am taking this opportunity of thanking everyone and anyone who has supported me over the last 53 years!”
Fans who attend the shows will get to hear the 30-minute instrumental, ‘Yessonata’, comprising “Yes themes and melodies, woven into sonata form.”

Boney M founder Frank Farian dead at 82

OHMYGOSSIP — Boney M founder Frank Farian has died aged 82.
The legendary German singer and record producer – behind the hits ‘Rasputin’ and ‘Daddy Cool’ – passed away peacefully at his home in Miami, Florida.
His death comes two years after he had a pig heart valve fitted.
Speaking to the magazine Bild in 2022, he said of the life-saving treatment: “My heart valve works wonderfully.
“Mick Jagger also received exactly the same heart valve. I have a good pig in me! And I’m very grateful for that.”
He added of the drug he was given: “This is a similar active ingredient to Viagra and has a nice side effect. But to be honest, I’m not thinking about sex at all at the moment. Today I enjoy a good meal and am just happy that I’m still alive.”
Unfortunately, his health deteriorated, and he became wheelchair-bound and required additional support for his lungs to help him breathe.
Farian also had difficulty speaking.
His ex-partner, Ingrid ‘Milli’ Segieth, 69, had recently visited him and told the same publication that in his final days he was “physically very weak, but was still full of energy.”
She added: “He was still sitting in the recording studio all day, working on new music.”
His glittering career spanning more than six decades saw Farian sell more than 850 million records.
As well the 1970s disco-pop group, the music star founded the Latin pop band No Mercy and the pop band Milli Vanilli.
He was caught up in controversy and legal troubles with the latter group when they lip-synced at the Grammy Awards in 1990.
It was reported that there were more than 26 lawsuits filed in the US under consumer fraud protection laws.
Farain famously worked with the likes of Meat Loaf and Stevie Wonder.
He also started the supergroup Far Corporation – comprising Steve Lukather, David Paich, Bobby Kimball, Simon Phillips, from Toto, and Robin McAuley. Their cover of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ reached number 8 in the UK in October 1985.

The upcoming single is co-written by Billy, Arthur Bacon, Wayne Hector and Freddy Wexler, who has previously worked with the likes of Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez.
‘Turn the Lights Back On’ will be the singer’s first new solo single since 2007, and only his second solo single since 1993.
The track will be available on streaming platforms and seven-inch vinyl at the start of February. The eagerly-awaited song will also be available to pre-order via www.billyjoel.com.
Billy recently teased his first single in years during an on-stage performance.
The music icon revealed to fans that he’d been in the studio cooking up “a little something”.

“We don’t have anything new to play for you.

Billy released his ‘River of Dreams’ album back in 1993, before dropping the classical collection ‘Fantasies and Delusions’ in 2001.
However, the award-winning star’s last original songs were 2007’s ‘All My Life’ and ‘Christmas In Fallujah’.

Eagles announce mini Manchester residency as final UK shows

OHMYGOSSIP — Eagles have announced their final UK dates as part of the ‘Long Goodbye’ tour with Steely Dan.
The ‘Get Over It’ rockers – Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, Vince Gill and Deacon Frey – will host a mini-residency at Manchester’s Co-Op Live on May 31, June 1 and June 4.
They will also play an extra show in Arnhem, The Netherlands, at GelreDome, on June 13.
In a lengthy statement, the band said: “The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds. Credit and thanks go to our longtime management team, our dedicated road crew, and our exceptional backup musicians for providing skilled and steadfast support, throughout these many years.
“We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful. Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle. The official farewell tour is currently underway. We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round. So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set.
“The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand. But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up. Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades. This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on.”
