Billy Porter struggled to find gender-fluid designers for Oscar’s look

OHMYGOSSIP — Billy Porter struggled to find a designer who was willing to create his gender-fluid outfit for the 2019 Academy Awards.
The 49-year-old actor showed up to the Oscars in a head-turning custom tuxedo gown created by inclusive designer, Christian Siriano, in February, and now the star has revealed he received a lot of “pushback” from fashion houses who were unwilling to help him create the iconic look.
He said: “I went to the Christian Siriano show, and I’ve loved him since ‘Project Runway’. I remember distinctly the challenge where they had to make clothes for regular-sized people.
“It’s in his DNA to be inclusive with his work. So if anybody was going to help me do this, it would be him. Because we had already come up against a lot of pushback. When we would ask for male and female things because I wanted to do a gender fluid thing, many houses were saying, ‘We don’t think he should wear that.’
“Once again, a silencing. So I went to Christian’s show, and I went to the after party. I was dancing with Christian, I whispered in his ear. I said, ‘I’m doing this Oscar thing and I want you to make me a ball gown.’ And he literally was like, ‘Call the office on Monday.'”
And Billy – who shot to fame following his appearance as cabaret performer Lola in the Award-winning Cyndi Lauper musical ‘Kinky Boots’ – insisted he wants his looks to be reflective of him as a brand and an activist for inclusivity.
He told W magazine: “So here’s what happened. I really began to try to figure out business-wise for myself. I am the business, I am the brand. Trying to start thinking in that sort of relationship to myself. What is my brand?
“I know that for certain that my brand will also include fashion in some way. Fashion is hard to break into from the theatre. It also is hard to break into when you’re above a certain age. But that’s cool, it didn’t matter. For me. I’m going to do it anyway.”

Gina Torres ‘glad’ she never had breast implants

OHMYGOSSIP — Gina Torres is glad she never had breast implants.
The 50-year-old actress has opened up about the worst career advice she ever received, which included being told to get the enhancement procedure in her early 20’s, but she is thankful she was confident enough to not follow the guidance.
She said: “I’m glad I never got my tits done! It was somebody stupid [who gave me the advice].
“I was in my early 20s. I think any small-breasted woman considers it at some point in her life, but I knew enough then that it wasn’t going to help me. That’s not what I was going for. It has to be driven from you, not someone else.”
The ‘Pearson’ star – who has 12-year-old daughter Delilah with ex-husband Laurence Fishburne – insisted that since turning aged 50 in April, she feels nothing but joy, although she did have a “midlife crisis” when she was 34.
She added: “[I feel] joy. I had a midlife crisis early, around 34 or 35. It took me the whole year of being 34 to ease into turning 35. I was in love and good, but the career was just fine and I didn’t have my daughter yet.
“It was one of those things that I think any actor goes through -particularly a woman, particularly a woman of colour – where you go, ‘Did I miss it? Is that it?’ Like, ‘I’m not going to be a movie star, and my face isn’t going to be on the side of a building to promote something? Also, I don’t have kids….’
“It was all of these milestones you create for yourself when you’re 25. You sort of reshuffle the deck every 10 years and go, “What the hell? If not that, then what? If not this, then when and how?” So that was 35.
And the ‘Suits’ star – who starred opposite Meghan, Duchess of Sussex in the series until leaving the show in 2016 to take care of her father – went on to reveal she is happier than ever and started to learn to accept herself when she reached 40 because she was “healthy and happy”.
She told US Glamour magazine: “By the time I got to 40, I had already gotten to the place of real acceptance and gratitude. I felt like, if this is what it is, this is f**king fantastic.
“I’m healthy, I’m happy, and I get to do something that I love doing. How many people get to say that? And I get to make a living at it. My focus was to achieve excellence in an arena that I had great respect and awe for and to find my place in it. That’s what I wanted to do.”

Tom Ford to launch new skincare line

OHMYGOSSIP — Tom Ford is launching a new skincare line.
The 57-year-old fashion designer debuted his luxurious eponymous beauty empire in 2011, and now the star has expanded his partnership with Estée Lauder to create a prestigious line of skincare products for his new range, Tom Ford Research.
Tom wanted to make sure his skincare regime really worked and stayed true to his own ethos, so he requested and received his own dedicated lab from Estée Lauder to work on the “science-based” products to make sure he was putting his name on something he was proud of.
He said: “I wanted to start a serious skin-care arm and have it be science-based. This is a real skin-care product and regimen. I’m not a designer who has thrown his name on a beautifully packaged cream.”
The designer drew on his own experiences and advice he received from previous dermatologists around the world when deciding on what ingredients he wanted to include in the line.
He told WWD: “Years ago, a dermatologist told me that the best thing for puffy eyes was moist tea bags. Every time I did it, I noticed that it also moisturised my skin.”
After 75 different trial concoctions, Ford unveiled his first much-anticipated creations, which included the Serum Concentrate ($350) and Crème Concentrate ($450), and both products are heavily infused with caffeine from the Japanese green tea, gyokuro, and the rare white porcelain cacao.
Tom Ford’s Research Serum Concentrate and Crème Concentrate launch in August, and three more products, including an eye cream, will debut in spring 2020.

Elie Saab: ‘Halle Berry is the reason my brand took off’

OHMYGOSSIP — Elie Saab credits Halle Berry for the popularity of his eponymous line.
The 55-year-old designer has praised the 52-year-old actress for helping his couture range take off after she stepped out in a custom floor-length red gown by the fashion guru at the 2002 Oscars – at which she become the first woman of colour to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in ‘Monster’s Ball’ – and launched him onto the international stage.
Opening up about the huge fashion moment, the designer said: “Halle Berry made the name Elie Saab more popular… She managed to really put the name Elie Saab on the international market.
“[That time] was a better time for cinema in general. [Halle Berry] was the first woman of colour [to receive the Oscar award for Best Actress in 2001]…
“It was elegant and daring and chic. I think this moment was a very exceptional moment for cinema.”
The Lebanon-born designer also cited Queen Rania of Jordan as an inspiration to him.
He told Vogue Australia: “Queen Rania is a woman who presents the women of our region. [She is] very pretty and very chic… worldwide. She has given women in the region an attitude that is very valuable.”
Saab works differently to other couturiers because he doesn’t believe in sketching, and instead likes to build a garment from scratch and watch it “grow”.
He added: “I work differently [to other designers]. I don’t believe much in the sketch. I like to see the dress grow little by little in front of me. I’m moulding, I’m removing, I’m putting on… [That’s how] I figure it out…
“Every inch of a woman’s body is very important, and [details as small as] two centimetres or a centimetre on a haute couture dress can make a lot of difference.”
The designer believes the Elie Saab woman has a “feminine” style that isn’t too “flashy”.
He continued: “It is a very feminine style, it’s a style that’s balanced. [We achieve] the right balance because it’s not obvious that we make dresses with enough embroidery and enough work to not to disturb the eye. It’s not too flashy… When you work a lot, things [become overworked], you always have to look at things, swing things around to get the best [balance].”

Little Mix felt more secure wearing heavier make-up

OHMYGOSSIP — Little Mix felt “more secure” onstage when they wore a heavier make-up look.
The ‘Woman Like Me’ hitmakers – who consist of Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jesy Nelson – have learned not to “pile on” the cosmetics anymore as their bolder looks made them look “really older”.
Speaking on Wednesday’s (17.07.19) episode of ‘This Morning’, Perrie said: “We went from being young, fresh girls to then not really wearing a lot of make-up, maybe a little bit of foundation on the lips when it was in, to then being really heavy and looking really older.
“We just felt more secure with lots and lots of make-up on and I think we got better and knowing what we suit and we don’t feel we need to pile it on anymore.”
The ‘Wings’ hitmakers – who shot to fame after winning ‘The X Factor’ in 2011 – also regret ever “getting rid” of their eyebrows.
Leigh-Anne added: “And we don’t need to get rid of our eyebrows so quickly!”
Perrie replied: “I did that, it was the fashion! It was the trend.”
And Perrie, 26 – who is dating footballer ace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – always makes sure to remove her make-up and cleanse her skin before “crawling” into bed, no matter how tired she is.
She said: “My top make-up tip is always take your make-up off, even if it’s been a long night and you want to crawl into bed.”
Leigh-Anne went on to admit that her go-to product is eye-brow gel because it helps tame any stray hairs which can get “annoying”.
She admitted: “I can’t live without eyebrow gel because I’ve got curly eyebrows, trust me they’re so annoying.”
And opening up about if the group preferred their skin to look matte or dewy, the ‘Black Magic’ chart toppers all agreed: “Dewy!”

Yara Shahidi brings her own make-up with her on set

OHMYGOSSIP — Yara Shahidi has to bring her “own make-up kit” with her when she is on set.
The 20-year-old actress is the face of cosmetic giant Bobbi Brown, which has recently expanded its shade range to make it more vast, and the star revealed she has had several beauty guru’s make her skin look “grey” because they are not carrying inclusive shades, and subsequently had to bring her own products with her to save any cosmetic mishaps when she is working.
Appearing unretouched in Harper’s Bazaar’s ‘Real Beauty’ August issue, which aims to celebrate women in their most authentic state by publishing all feature stories with non-airbrushed photos, Yara said: “I love that more brands are doing this [being more inclusive]. There have been times when I got out of the makeup chair and my skin looked grey. It’s why I think every single person of colour usually brings their own make-up kit to set.”
The Iranian-American beauty went on to admit that her day-to-day style consists of “not showing” much skin because she likes her wardrobe looks to make a “statement”.
She added: “By not showing skin, I’m making a statement. My clothes need to have movement. For me, fashion is all about joy.”
The ‘Black-ish’ star previously revealed that before she knew about brow gels that were on the market, she would use her daily mascara to give her face a touch up and keep any stray hairs in place.
Speaking in a beauty tutorial, Yara said: “Before I learned that people make products for brows, I used to just put mascara on my brows.
“I always say my beauty icons are of course my momma and my nanna, they were the first representations I had of what beauty means to me. I have a binder on my phone just called aesthetic where I just save photos that inspire me.”

Khloe Kardashian: My nose contour can look crazy

OHMYGOSSIP — Khloe Kardashian admits her nose contour can sometimes look “crazy”.
The 35-year-old TV reality star has opened up about how her beauty routine has changed since she has become a new mother to her 15-month-old daughter True – who she raises with her ex-partner Tristan Thompson – and the striking blonde has revealed her “favourite” part in her make-up ritual is making her nose look slimmer with different hued powder, but she has to be careful not to go overboard with her application of the product.
She said: “One of my favourite things is nose contour, but this does stress me out a bit. In person and how cameras reflect and light, everything looks different. Sometimes I will contour my nose and in real life I think I look so good, and then in photos I look crazy.”
Khloe loves to contour her jawline to make her face look slimmer, and has dubbed the process a “magic eraser” for her baby weight.
She added: “Especially after baby, when you have had a baby [and] you’re working on losing weight, and you’re still not losing that much weight. [In] your face you just feel so big. This I swear is like a magic eraser. I sit here and I’m just like, ‘Please go away! Come again another day. Please! Or just don’t come!’ ”
The ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ star also addressed the criticism she has received for having long, acrylic nails and admitted they don’t get in the way of her being a mother to her child.
Speaking in a Vogue beauty tutorial, Khloe added: “I’ve had long nails for 100 years. Everyone told me, ‘When you have a baby you have to have short nails, this is gross, you can’t take care of your child.’ If I could wipe my own ass, I could wipe my child’s ass. I’m actually looking at hers, so it’s a lot easier.”
The “Revenge Body” host went on to explain that her make-up is like a shield, and helps her feel “cute and prepared” for any trauma that could break out.
She added: “No one ever bought me make-up classes, if you can’t tell. Stuff breaks out in this family all the time, so you just always wanna be cute and prepared – even in trauma or tragedy you wanna look good.”

Dame Helen Mirren ‘doesn’t spend a lot of money’ on products

OHMYGOSSIP — Dame Helen Mirren “doesn’t spend a lot of money” on beauty products.
The 73-year-old actress – who is the face of the skincare brand L’Oreal Paris – likes to “experiment” with different looks and cosmetic items and feels “smug” when she picked up a particularly successful bargain.
She said: “I don’t spend a lot of money on make-up because I buy what, in America, you call drugstore make-up. That way, I can buy lots and lots of different things and experiment. There’s nothing like dropping 10 quid on a new lipstick and feeling suitably smug.”
And Helen’s evening beauty ritual consists of always removing her make-up at night and putting on a moisturiser to keep her skin hydrated.
She added: “I always take my make-up off and I always put on moisturiser at night.
“Then I cleanse my face again in the morning and put on moisturiser, and that’s about it.”
The ‘Red’ star’s lip liners are her favourite product in her cosmetic kit.
She told Grazia magazine: “I’ve got so many lip liners, you wouldn’t believe! I am always up for a new lip liner.”
Helen went on to reveal that her favourite hairstyle was her rose pink locks, which she debuted at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in May,as she was able to use L’Oreal’s temporary Paris Colorista Spray in Pink [£6.99] to achieve the bold look with minimal effort.
She continued: “I wore pink hair down the Cannes red carpet to match my dress. With the technology they now have, you just spray that stuff on and it literally just washes out. I had pink hair at 8 o’clock and my own colour back again at 9 o’clock.”

Beyonce’s feline look

OHMYGOSSIP — Beyonce had an “undeniable feline presence” at ‘The Lion King’ European premiere.
The 37-year-old star – who voices Nala in the movie – stepped out on the red carpet in London at the weekend with a glow created by the new Sir John x Disney The Lion King Highlighter Palette from Luminess Cosmetics all over her arms, legs, neckline, and shoulders.
And her make-up artist, Sir John, wanted to use his new product to give his most famous client the “power and sultry essence” of a lioness.
He told Us Weekly magazine: “If you noticed, the London premiere was my attempt at harnessing the power and sultry essence of a lioness. Not literal in interpretation, however there’s an undeniable feline presence.”
Beyonce’s look also utilised the ‘Can’t Wait To Be Queen’ eyeshadow, as well as other products from Sir John’s ‘Lion King’ beauty collaboration.
The make-up artist previously revealed he didn’t want the ‘Formation’ hitmaker to look “too shimmery” on the red carpet.
He said: “I love playing with textures. I really wanted to create a nice daytime smoky eye using browns, an antique, champagne gold colour like Nala, and a warm gold like Simba.
“It’s all about strategically placing these colours so that no matter where my client turns, their look is never too shimmery.”
Sir John also admitted his eight-piece limited-edition ‘Lion King’ range had been a “labour of love”.
He said: “I literally have never worked so hard on one project in my life. But it’s been a labour of love.
“I really tried to look out for women, like my mum, who just doesn’t have time to put on eye shadow.
“Beyoncé was happy, my mom is happy, and if my grandmother were still here, she’d be proud.”

Serena Williams and daughter share beauty regime

OHMYGOSSIP — Serena Williams and her daughter follow the same beauty routine.
The 37-year-old tennis player and 21-month-old Olympia – who she has with her husband Alexis Ohanian – share the same evening pampering procedure and the first step in their joint ritual is to apply coconut oil to their skin because it has “amazing” moisturising properties and is also a great natural make-up remover.
Serena said: “The first step in my routine, when I’m taking off my make-up and coming undone, I actually do something completely different. I use coconut oil because it’s amazing. I use it for everything you can think of. This could literally be your only step if that’s all you want.
“Olympia, who is my daughter, actually does the routine with me. And it’s safe for kids too. She’s only one-and-a-half and she loves it.”
Serena keeps her complexion bright and flaw-free by using a vitamin C enriched serum, which she discovered on her babymoon.
She added: “I actually found this [Vine Vera Resveratol Vitamin C Serum $246] on my babymoon in Mexico. I just do a couple dabs and I always give Olympia some dabs. I feel like whatever you’re using under your eye is super moisturising and it can work for the whole face.”
The seven-time Wimbledon winner went on to reveal that since she hit aged 30, she has noticed she now has a “5 o’clock shadow”, so Serena will use brightening products to make the area appear glowy and flawless.
Speaking in US Harper’s Bazaar’s ‘Go To Bed With Me’ YouTube series, she continued: “Honestly, I have a little 5 o’clock shadow, so I put it on top of my moustache.
“I hit 30 and after that everything has become either moustache or beard, let’s just be honest ladies. So I do that there too because I think if it’s brightening, maybe it’ll brighten that too.
“The last thing I’m going to today, and sometimes honestly it varies, I’m not that routine type of girl – I have my Mario Badescu — I absolutely love this stuff. It gives me this crazy glow, but I always use it at night too because I like the way it smells.”

Stella McCartney signs deal with LVMH

OHMYGOSSIP — Stella McCartney has signed a deal with French luxury group LVMH.
The 47-year-old fashion designer – who is committed to using sustainable and leather and fur alternatives in her clothes – has teamed up with the Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton luxury conglomerate, which owns Loewe, Fendi and Christian Dior, after leaving her former French fashion group, Kering, last year.
Stella – who is the house’s founder – will continue her role as the brand’s creative director, and as the majority owner of her eponymous business, however, she will also become a special adviser to LVMH’s chairman, Bernard Arnault, and to the LVMH board on the topic of sustainability and fashion’s environmental issues.
Arnault told WWD: “It is the beginning of a beautiful story together, and we are convinced of the great long-term potential of her house.
“A decisive factor was that she was the first to put sustainability and ethical issues on the front stage, very early on, and built her house around these constraints. It emphasises LVMH Group’s commitment to sustainability.”
Stella – who is the daughter of Sir Paul McCartney and his late wife Linda – bought back Kering’s 50 per cent stake in her brand in March 2018, and since then the design icon has been approached by a number of investors.
In a statement, Stella added: “While these approaches were interesting, none could match the conversation I had with Bernard Arnault and his son Antoine.
“The passion and commitment they expressed towards the Stella McCartney brand alongside their belief in the ambitions and our values as the global leader in sustainable luxury fashion was truly impressive.”
The fashionista is LVMH’s second high-profile signing this year, as earlier this year Arnault announced it was launching high fashion label, Fenty, with Rihanna, making her the first black woman to head up a fashion house at the company.

Beyonce’s Lion King beauty look

OHMYGOSSIP — Beyonce’s make-up for ‘The Lion King’ European premiere was inspired by the characters Nala and Simba.
The 37-year-old R&B superstar voices lioness Nala – Simba’s childhood best friend and future love interest in the remake of the Disney classic – and her long-time beauty guru Sir John has revealed he “played around with different textures” to get her all-golden look, the same colour as a lion’s fur, at the event which took place at London’s Leicester Square on Sunday night (14.07.19).
He said: “I love playing with textures. I really wanted to create a nice daytime smoky eye using browns, an antique, champagne gold colour like Nala, and a warm gold like Simba.
“It’s all about strategically placing these colours so that no matter where my client turns, their look is never too shimmery.”
The ‘Formation’ hitmaker’s beauty expert recently teamed up with beauty brand Luminess to create an eight-piece limited-edition range of products inspired by the much-anticipated photo realistic animation, and Sir John made sure to use them on Beyonce for the prestigious red carpet event.
He told PEOPLE: “I literally have never worked so hard on one project in my life. But it’s been a labour of love.
“I really tried to look out for women, like my mum, who just doesn’t have time to put on eye shadow.
“Beyoncé was happy, my mom is happy, and if my grandmother were still here, she’d be proud.”
Sir John went on to insist he always remains “grateful” and humble because it’s important to know how far he has come on his beauty journey.
He added: “I’m always next, next, next, because my goal is to keep it moving. But I’m never not grateful, my mama won’t let that happen! I am still just a guy from Harlem.”

Elsa Hosk shares clothes with her boyfriend

OHMYGOSSIP — Elsa Hosk “shares” clothes with her boyfriend.
The 30-year-old model has been dating her long-term partner Tom Daly since 2015 and the catwalk star has revealed her distinct laid back style is influenced by her love of men’s fashion because it’s “comfortable” and she loves to wear her man’s outfits.
She said: “I share a lot of clothes with my boyfriend. I buy him a lot of vintage ’50s Hawaiian shirts that I steal when we are on vacation. I also borrow his suits sometimes and he borrows all my super oversized Balenciaga stuff and cashmere Elder Statesman sweaters. Sometimes I get something for both of us in mind. I think rules in fashion are going away. Men and women can wear the same clothes – people are most beautiful and comfortable when they wear exactly what they want! It’s so cool when women wear traditional men’s clothes and vice versa!”
The Swedish beauty recently unveiled a new collaboration with denim label, J Brand, and the star created an 11-piece capsule collection which she had “full creative control” over.
She told Vogue Australia: “I’ve had a long relationship with J Brand and I wanted to do a denim collection with them from day one. J Brand gave me full creative control which was so much fun for me.
“I was very quick in deciding what I wanted to do so I put together a presentation with sketches and inspiration pictures of around ten styles and they chose the ones that they liked the most. After that we made first samples and had many fittings to get the fit, wash and fabric as close as possible to our shared vision.”
And Elsa insisted she got inspiration for the collection from her own wardrobe and was influenced heavily by the 1980’s.
She added: “This collection is very me because some jeans are ’80s inspired, some are very modern, one is a very straight ’90s fit and the leather pant is super modern.”
The Victoria’s Secret Angel – who was chosen to wear the brand’s iconic Fantasy Bra in the 2018 lingerie catwalk spectacular – also insisted that her J Brand range needed to be “sustainable” before anything else.
She continued: To have this collection be as sustainable as possible was very important for me. All styles in the capsule feature sustainable elements – an eco wash showing significant reduction in water used during production, tags, trims, and hardware made of recycled and/or sustainable materials, and the use of recycled cotton wherever possible.”

Irina Shayk will embrace ageing

OHMYGOSSIP — Irina Shayk plans to “celebrate” the signs of ageing.
The 33-year-old beauty isn’t worried about having wrinkles because she understands it is part of the “human process” for the appearance to change with age.
She said: “I’m going to have wrinkles and I have wrinkles.
“You just have to accept the idea of ageing and of bodies at every stage, and just celebrate it. In life, we have to let it go and understand it’s a human process not to be perfect.”
The Russian model isn’t interested in having cosmetic surgery but she doesn’t judge those who opt to have treatments.
She said: “Look, if somebody wants to inject their lips because they feel bad, God bless them. I don’t judge anyone.
“I always promote natural beauty because I think we live in this perfect world where everyone wants to be perfect.
“But I’m not perfect. Sometimes I have a double chin. Perfection doesn’t exist.”
And Irina – who has two-year-old daughter Lea de Seine with former partner Bradley Cooper – tries to see the funny side when people speculate as to whether she’s had work done.
She told HarpersBazaar.com: “If I read [a headline] and it’s like, ‘She had injections, her lips look like dumplings,’ I just laugh because it just makes me, I don’t want to say it makes me happy, but I think in this life you have to have a sense of humour.
“With everything that’s going on in the world, you have to take it easy. Some people are going to love you, some people are going to hate you. It doesn’t really disturb my life.”
