Anna Wintour: ‘Vogue has not done enough for black people’

OHMYGOSSIP — Anna Wintour has issued an apology to black staff at Condé Nast.
The Vogue Editor-in-Chief admitted that there are “too few” black employees at the company and has taken “full responsibility” for hurtful and intolerant stories that appeared in the publication.
In a memo, obtained by the New York Post’s Page Six, Anna – who is also Condé Nast’s artistic director – told employees: “I want to start by acknowledging your feelings and expressing my empathy towards what so many of you are going through: sadness, hurt, and anger too.
“I want to say this especially to the black members of our team – I can only imagine what these days have been like. But I also know that the hurt, and violence, and injustice we’re seeing and talking about have been around for a long time. Recognising it and doing something about it is overdue.
“I want to say plainly that I know Vogue has not found enough ways to elevate and give space to black editors, writers, photographers, designers and other creators.
“We have made mistakes too, publishing images or stories that have been hurtful or intolerant. I take full responsibility for those mistakes.
“It can’t be easy to be a black employee at Vogue, and there are too few of you. I know that it is not enough to say we will do better, but we will — and please know that I value your voices and responses as we move forward. I am listening and would like to hear your feedback and your advice if you would like to share either.
“I am proud of the content we have published on our site over these past few days but I also know that there is much more work to do. Please don’t hesitate to be in touch with me directly. I am arranging ways we can discuss these issues together candidly, but in the meantime, I welcome your thoughts or reactions.”
Anna’s memo comes after Black Lives Matter protests have taken place worldwide, following the death of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, by a white police officer, in the US last month.

Daisy Edgar-Jones’ style challenge

OHMYGOSSIP — The Covid-19 pandemic has presented new challenges for Daisy Edgar-Jones’ stylist.
Nicky Yates revealed that working with her client remotely has been less than ideal but admitted that Daisy taking part in Zoom interviews from her home during lockdown rather than appearing on talk shows in person has simplified the styling process.
Speaking to Vogue.co.uk, she said: “It has been a slower process. But Zoom means looks don’t have to be perfect from top to bottom 360 degrees, and I don’t have to be at every fitting.
“We picked clothes that looked great on the shoulders. Or we left her neck bare and played with jewellery.
“It must be very strange dressing up in your own home. To become famous without having met any of the people [in the entertainment industry].”
Before they started working together, Daisy, 22 – who stars as Marianne Sheridan in the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s ‘Normal People’ – sent Nicky a mood board of ideas and Nicky says this showed her that they were a perfect fit.
She explained: “I instantly knew we had the same aesthetic, and that it would be a lovely working relationship.”
And working together in person for the BAFTAs, pre-lockdown, helped Yates – who also dresses Claire Foy, Naomi Ackie and Felicity Jones – to get a better sense of Edgar Jones’ style.
She explained: “It was more about what was exciting for her. There’s always a moment in a fitting, where the whole room collectively gasps, ‘Oh my gosh, that looks great’. That helped me work out which brands to introduce Daisy to.”

Chanel won’t cut number of collections

OHMYGOSSIP — Chanel will resume its usual schedule of collections and runway shows, once the Covid-19 pandemic is over.
Although Gucci’s Alessandro Michele recently revealed that the Italian brand will reduce its shows to just twice a year and urged other labels to follow suit, French fashion house Chanel plans to return to its usual calendar of events, starting with the cruise collection, which will drop in stores on November 15.
Bruno Pavlovsky, president of fashion and president of Chanel SAS, told WWD: “We want to reintroduce the spring collections that we didn’t have time to sell in season. The cruise collection will allow us to re-energise those pieces.
“This cruise collection has been a way to get everyone back into the life of the company and we will continue with couture. I was with Virginie [Chanel’s designer Virginie Viard] when she brought the first 25 sketches to the heads of the couture workshops, and I can tell you, everyone was smiling from ear to ear. Life goes on.”
Speaking about Chanel’s decision not to cut back on the number of collections, Bruno explained: “We prefer to have six more focused collections rather than two endless collections. We chose this rhythm and we like it and we believe it’s what our customers want to see in our stores. So we are sticking to this schedule, and in parallel, the fashion show remains the best way to express the brand’s creativity and know-how.”
However, he revealed that the lavish fashion week shows at the Grand Palais in Paris that late Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld was famous for, may give way presentations on a smaller scale.
He said: “We are entering into a slightly different period, probably more intimate.
“It will necessarily be on a smaller scale. It was great with Karl – it was an extraordinary period, but now it no longer makes sense. But I do want to go back to fashion shows. It’s such fun. At the end of the day, fashion is about fun, the models, the fittings, all of that will be back as soon as they can travel again.”

60 jobs cut at Marc Jacobs

OHMYGOSSIP — Marc Jacobs has cut 60 jobs.
The fashion label has reduced its headcount in design and other departments, with designer Olympia Le-Tan – who worked for the brand’s lower-priced line, The Marc Jacobs – one of the most high-profile casualties.
A spokesperson told WWD that the cuts represent less than 10 per cent of the brand’s global headcount and added: “Given the substantial impact of Covid-19 on the retail industry, we have made targeted changes that allow Marc Jacobs International to adapt to the evolving environment and continue forward on our path to refocus the business and highlight the creative innovation that has always defined our brand. This included making the difficult decision to eliminate certain roles and, for a small number of employees, reducing responsibilities.”
Meanwhile, Marc recently revealed that he feels fashion will “never exist as we know it” following the coronavirus pandemic.
He shared: “I work within a team, and it’s our daily interaction and it’s life that stimulates and provides a catalyst for what me and my team create each season. So I wouldn’t say this is the most creative place to be. Creating isn’t done in a vacuum or a bubble. It might be done within the bubble of our fashion world, but it is the stimulation of the entire world that is the catalyst, that gives us the drive and the energy and the passion to create.
“Until we discover a new way to work, until we create a new way to work, or a new end goal to work towards, we really have nothing to do. To carry around the past probably isn’t the best way forward. What I do and the clothes that I make and the way we present a show, it feels like that probably will never exist as we know it, the way we did it.”

Gucci vows to ‘combat racism and fight for equality’

OHMYGOSSIP — Gucci has vowed to “combat racism and fight for equality”.
The Italian label is backing the Black Lives Matter movement and has vowed to generate “positive change” in the fashion industry.
Marco Bizzari, president and chief executive officer of Gucci, told WWD: “Gucci is driven by the issues that are fundamentally influencing and creating our collective future. It is paramount that we build this future to be more equitable, where injustice and discrimination in all their forms are not allowed to prevail. In light of current events, our unwavering commitment to combat racism and fight for equality is now even stronger.
“As a company, we will continue to focus on generating positive change for people and for nature across our business. We also have a responsibility, as a global brand, to be active partners within the community to incite change and Gucci Equilibrium has the capacity to convene and unite a community of voices to help navigate the way forward.”
Following the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who was killed by a white police officer, in America last month, Gucci shared a message of solidarity with the BLM movement on Instagram and revealed details of its donations to a number of causes.
The message stated: “Together with the world, we mourn the loss of George Floyd, and the many Black men and women that we have lost before him. We stand with those demanding justice for the violence against them.
“Our unity to combat racism and to fight for equality, as individuals and as a company, is stronger than ever. Injustice and discrimination in all their forms cannot be allowed to prevail.
“As Changemakers, we join the fight to end systemic racism, bigotry, police violence and oppression.
“We stand in solidarity and in action with the black community that has always supported us.
“Marco Bizzarri, Alessandro Michele and all the Gucci employees.”
The company added in a caption: “Through Gucci’s North America Changemakers Impact Fund, we will support with donations to @NAACP, @campaignzero and @yourrightscamp, in addition to @Kering_official’s commitment on behalf of all @Kering_official brands (sic).”

Danielle Lloyd embarrassed by wonky boobs

OHMYGOSSIP — Danielle Lloyd was embarrassed by her “wonky boobs”.
The 36-year-old model credits a breast augmentation, liposuction and Brazilian bum lift that she had in September 2019 at a Turkish clinic with helping her to regain her body confidence and she said she no longer worries about stripping off in front of husband Michael O’Neill, 33.
She told new! magazine: “I just felt sh*t about myself. It gave me so much confidence. I felt so sexy again and like the old me. Now I’m happy with my body, I don’t look at myself and think I look like a ‘freak’
“Before, even getting naked in front of Michael made me embarrassed over my wonky boobs. He didn’t even notice, but when I showed the before and afters, he said: ‘I didn’t even realise how bad they were’.”
And Danielle is so pleased by the results of her surgery, that she has set up an OnlyFans account, where she sells racy pictures of herself for cash.
The former glamour model recently explained that Michael doesn’t mind and she is thrilled to have gotten her confidence back.
She previously said: “I just feel so good at the moment, and I thought, why not take advantage of it? I know there’s loads of porn on there, but that’s not what I’m doing! I’m just posting nice glamour photos.
“Michael isn’t bothered. When he met me, he knew what I did for a living, and I’ve modelled for years!”

Reese Witherspoon’s Draper James sued

OHMYGOSSIP — Reese Witherspoon’s Draper James is being sued over a dress giveaway for teachers.
Back in April, the 44-year-old actress’ fashion company Draper James ran a competition to give free dresses to teachers in the US amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The brand stated on Instagram: “Dear Teachers: We want to say thank you. During quarantine we see you working harder than ever to educate our children. To show our gratitude, Draper James would like to give teachers a free dress.”
According to TMZ, three women are seeking class-action status for their lawsuit after claiming that teachers were expecting a free dress and not entry into a draw for a limited supply.
They allege that it was not made clear that there were only 250 dresses to be given away and they believed all teachers who applied would get a garment.
Draper James’ attorney Theane Evangelis told TMZ: “This lawsuit is an unjust attempt to exploit Draper James’ good intentions to honour the teacher community by gifting hundreds of free dresses. The fact that supplies were limited, such that a free dress could not be provided to every teacher who responded, was disclosed and is no basis for a lawsuit.
“Draper James looks forward to defending this case, to continuing its efforts to acknowledge the extraordinary contributions made by teachers during this time of need, and to being vindicated in court.”
Reese said at the time: “I have been so encouraged by the ways people are really showing up for each other.
“During quarantine, teachers are broadcasting lessons from their own homes and figuring out new remote-learning technology and platforms on the fly, all while continuing to educate and connect with our kids. Advocating for the children is no easy task, so I wanted to show teachers a little extra love right now.”

Rihanna’s ‘expressive’ with her hair

OHMYGOSSIP — Rihanna likes to be “expressive” with her hair.
Her hairstylist, Yusef, has dubbed the ‘Stay’ singer’s hairstyles as “all trendsetting works of art”.
Asked what his favourite hair looks of Rihanna’s are, he said: “They’re all my babies. They’re all trendsetting works of art. We like to have fun, we like to create, we like to be expressive.”
And Yusef believes the 32-year-old singer and businesswoman really “kicked the door down” and “paved the way” for inclusivity across the beauty and fashion industry.
Speaking about inclusivity in the beauty industry, he added: “The direction is good. People just really have to follow through with it. Shoutout to Fenty Beauty for paving the way for that.
“Ri basically kicked the door down. That is something I’ve always thought was really important, for even me being a hairstylist – knowing how to deal with all textures of hair.”
Yusef is backing a new campaign for retailers to pledge to stock at least 15 per cent of black-owned brands in their stores.
He told Glossy: “I’m just not really about, like, people talking about it; just do it. You know what I mean? I think it’s a wonderful idea. I hope I’m in that number with my brand. And I just want it to be something that’s consistent, not just for the moment. Stock up these aisles. Get black hair brands from the bottom of the aisle, off the floor, and put them right at the top, so people can be equal and not less than. It’s just crazy. My goal is to go into these stores and be part of that market, and be on the top shelf, and stay there.”

Marion Cotillard: The fashion industry needs to make red carpets sustainable

OHMYGOSSIP — Marion Cotillard thinks the fashion industry should “aim” to make red carpets green by promoting sustainable fashion.
The ‘La Vie En Rose’ star feels it is important that red carpets across the world are more sustainable, and she believes this should come from designers and fashion houses across the world.
She said: “I think this is something that we need to aim for: if you only take half measures you will never push limits back. It is well worth setting the bar super high. We have a long way to go, but at least some creative and amazing brands are already taking this path, so I think we all need to aim to do the best we can.”
And the 44-year-old actress loves walking red carpets herself, particularly at the Cannes Film Festival.
She added to Prestige Online: “The Cannes red carpet is very special: I’ve walked it for 18 straight years now and it always brings the same feeling of joy that is hard to describe. It’s not stressful but has a kind of mystery to it that never wears off. Each time I’m on this red carpet representing a new movie I’m like the same kid with stars in my eyes. It is kind of funny to have this same feeling over and over again that never becomes just a matter of routine. It’s always something new, especially because with most of the movies I have had in Cannes it was the first time for the directors and the other actors, so you see the magic weaving its spell on all those people and it thus remains as fresh as ever.”

Victoria Beckham: The fashion industry has a ‘huge role to play’ to end racism

OHMYGOSSIP — Victoria Beckham says the fashion industry has a “huge role to play” to end racism.
The 46-year-old fashion designer has set up an internal working group in her company to make a “first step” to discuss the race issues that plague the industry.
In a lengthy post, she shared: “I’ve taken a step back this week to focus on the tragic events that have been highlighted recently. Watching things unfold and learning more about the Black Lives Matter movement, I’ve been truly sickened by how deeply ingrained racism is in our society …
“The fashion industry has a huge role to play, and for me, it starts with representation, both within my business and who we work with externally. I’ve always aimed for inclusivity, but we all need to look inwards and be better. At Victoria Beckham, we’ve set up an internal working group as a first step and will provide additional support to ensure that we are listening to each other, discussing the issues, identifying unconscious bias in ourselves and ensuring our short and long-term actions reflect all our learnings.”
And Victoria insists she is “absolutely committed” to doing more on both a personal and professional level.
She added: “Whilst things won’t change or be solved in a day, we clearly can’t wait another day to start and I am absolutely committed to being better and doing more, both personally and professionally. I hope you all share my sentiment and are doing the same with your friends, family, brands and businesses so that we all play our part in this vital issue. x vb #blacklivesmatter (sic)”

Edward Enninful creatively challenged by Covid-19 lockdown

OHMYGOSSIP — Edward Enninful says lockdown has been “creatively speaking, the best period of my career”.
The editor-in-chief of British Vogue admitted that the Covid-19 pandemic has provided a number of challenges for him and his team but said that quarantining at home has removed all other distractions from his life and he has been able to fully focus on the magazine.
He explained: “Like many people in the fashion industry, lockdown has meant that, for the first time in a long while, I’ve had time on my hands.
“I’m not running around doing 100 things: the events, the catwalk shows, the travel for fashion shoots that are part and parcel of editing a magazine like British Vogue. Working from my home, in west London, I’ve been able to work closely with the editorial team, as well as the fashion editors and the photographers, and we have been able to come up with new ways of looking at culture and fashion.
“It’s been challenging, being physically separated from the team and the office but, creatively speaking, it’s been the best period of my career.”
Edward added that he and his team have had to challenge themselves and he is proud of what they have achieved.
He told Vogue.co.uk: “We’ve had to think outside the box, beyond ‘the girl in the studio’, and we’ve come up with some incredible ideas. I’ve been proud of how the team has pulled together as a group, with our contributors bringing so many wonderful concepts to our attention, too. I really feel it’s been a creative renaissance.”

Kim Kardashian West in talks with Coty

OHMYGOSSIP — Kim Kardashian West is in talks with Coty Inc.
The cosmetics brand already owns a 51 per cent stake in Kim’s sister Kylie Jenner’s beauty brand Kylie Cosmetics and is now in talks with Kim about her KKW Beauty company.
According to the New York Post, Page Six, Chief Executive Peter Harf said in a conference call: “Kris Jenner and I are good friends. I think I’m very proud that the Jenner family is working with us and [that we] have access to them and to all other people who are big key opinion leaders on social media.”
“I could get more concrete but this is not yet in the public domain.”
The company later disclosed in a regulatory filing that it was in talks with Kim, about a possible collaboration “with respect to certain beauty products” but did not give any other details.
Meanwhile, in November last year, Kylie sold 51 per cent of her beauty brand to Coty Inc. for $600 million.
The deal, which wrapped in January, valued her business at an estimated $1.2 billion.
Kylie previously insisted she “didn’t expect” to be so successful when she launched her beauty business in 2015.
She said: “I didn’t expect anything. I did not foresee the future. But [the recognition] feels really good. That’s a nice pat on the back.”
Most of the brand’s marketing is done through social media – where the brunette beauty announces product launches, previews new items and tells fans which shades she’s wearing each day – to her millions of followers across Instagram, Facebook and Twitter and Kylie believes it’s been essential to her success.

Honnefelder only joined Kylie Jenner’s company in January but quietly left the business in April for “personal reasons” and has been replaced by Simona Cattaneo, Coty Inc has announced.
Andra Mielnicki, vice president, global influencer marketing, luxury at Coty told FashionNetwork.com: “Coty announced a number of changes that will allow the company to focus on its core prestige and mass beauty businesses, including renewed investment in the e-commerce development of the prestige beauty franchise.
“As part of this effort, we are building a strong foundation to support our strategic partnership with Kylie Jenner. Simona Cattaneo, president luxury brands, is overseeing the expansion of the Kylie business for Coty.”
“She assumes these responsibilities from Christoph Honnefelder, who announced to the senior team internally a number of weeks ago that he would not be assuming the role of CEO of Kylie Beauty for personal reasons. In November 2019, Kylie sold a 51 percent majority stake in her Kylie Cosmetics and Kylie Skin brands to beauty giant Coty – which owns around 77 brands including Hugo Boss, Burberry, Rimmel and Max Factor – for a whopping $600 million.
She has retained a 49 per cent share in the business.

Elon Musk’s mother praises Grimes’ style

OHMYGOSSIP — Elon Musk’s mother admires Grimes’ sense of style.
Model, author and dietician Maye Musk is very close to the 32-year-old singer – who recently welcomed son X Æ A-Xii with Elon, 48 – and she thinks the star is incredibly stylish and creative.
She told WWD: “She has incredible fashion and is creative. I admire people who are creative because I am a scientist. I work with so many creative people in the fashion industry.”
Maye also believes that the fashion industry will be changed drastically by the Covid-19 pandemic and she thinks it will become much more sustainable.
She explained: “I think it’s going to be more sustainable, less glamorous. It’s going to take a while. I’ve modeled designer clothes where they have spent hours putting together a beautiful garment for me. I don’t know if people are going to spend so much.”
Meanwhile Grimes – whose real name is Claire Boucher – previously insisted that her private style is “more weird” than her public persona suggests.
She said: “In my life, I’m a lot more weird than this. Grimes is more palatable for humans. If it was up to me maybe I’d wear a moustache or something.
“I try to make it digestible to a degree. That’s what I’m interested in seeing. I create a thing that I wish existed in the world, versus my own full unabashed creative expression.”

Marc Jacobs backs LA BLM protests after store is trashed

OHMYGOSSIP — Marc Jacobs doesn’t care that his LA store was trashed during the recent protests.
The sign for Jacobs’ Melrose Place clothing store was defaced during protests sparked by the death of George Floyd, a black man who was killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis in May, and the windows were smashed but Marc insisted that property is not worth more than somebody’s life.
Marc wrote on his personal Instagram page: “A life cannot be replaced. Black Lives Matter,” and an identical message was posted on the company’s account.
One glass door of the store was completely smashed, while another was partly damaged. The shop also appeared to have been looted and the message “F**k capitalism,” was spray painted on the wall.
However, Marc is not worried about the property and insisted that nothing is worth more than a human life.
He also shared a message which read: “NEVER let them convince you that broken glass or property is violence.
“HUNGER is VIOLENCE. HOMELESSNESS is VIOLENCE. WAR is VIOLENCE. DROPPING BOMBS on people is VIOLENCE.
“RACISM is VIOLENCE. WHITE SUPREMACY is VIOLENCE. NO HEALTHCARE is VIOLENCE. POVERTY is VIOLENCE. CONTAMINATING WATER SOURCES FOR PROFIT is VIOLENCE.
“Property can be replaced, human lives CANNOT (sic).”
