Emily Ratajkowski went ‘crazy’ about skincare in quarantine

OHMYGOSSIP — Emily Ratajkowski went “crazy” about skincare in quarantine.
The ‘We Are Your Friends’ hitmaker felt like she was “overusing products” when it came to her previous routine but she has now slim-lined her skincare to ensure all the basics are covered as she feels her past methods made her skin “freak” out.
Speaking about her lockdown beauty routine, she said: “In quarantine, I went crazy and ordered a bunch of skincare products. One of the things I’ve learned about beauty – I just need the basics and for them to be really good. That was one of the ways that my skin freaked out, because I was overusing products.”
And the 29-year-old actress insists she wasn’t really “into skincare” for a long time.
She added: “I really wasn’t into skincare or make-up or anything. I wasn’t even someone who really washed my face. I was so nervous because Emily Weiss came over, and I made up some of the things I used. I thought I gave them info and the comments were like, ‘Oh, this girl doesn’t even like skincare!'”
Emily used to hate sheet masks but she is now a huge fan of them and uses them if she has an “extra 15 minutes in the morning” or if she’s just got out the shower.
Speaking to Vogue magazine of her beauty routine, she shared: “If I have an extra 15 minutes in the morning and I’ve gotten out of the shower, it is easy to throw one on while I’m blow drying my hair or answering my emails. Then I can take it off and put my make-up on right then and there. I could be talking to you on the phone right now and wouldn’t be like, ‘Oh my God, it’s sliding off!'”

Dakota Fanning loves fashion because it is glamorous

OHMYGOSSIP — Dakota Fanning thinks fashion is “so enticing” to people because it represents glamour.
The ‘Alienist’ star has previously directed a film for Miu Miu and is now serving as narrator and executive producer on ‘Last Looks’ – a Quibi series examining true crimes in the fashion industry – and she can understand why the “luxurious” world of style is a subject of such fascination.
She said: “I think that fashion is a world that is so enticing for so many reasons.
“There’s a glamorous aspect. There is a luxurious aspect to fashion.
“And I’m lucky to have been able to be a little bit inside of that world and see that world.
“I think it’s a subject that has a very rich history, and it’s very glamorous. And I think people are fascinated by glamour.
“I also think where there’s light there’s darkness, and where there’s fun and frivolity there’s also can be heavy tragedy. I think that these stories show that very clearly.”
Dakota found working on the series – which explores subjects including the suicide of Russian model Ruslana Korshunova, who took her own life shortly after joining a cult, faux heiress Anna Delvey, and ‘Black Widow’ Patrizia Reggiani, who was convicted of arranging to kill her ex-husband, Gucci heir Maurizio Gucci – “super exciting” and learned a lot from each episode.
She told Refinery29: “It’s a space and a theme that I enjoy watching as a viewer, like true crime series and docuseries, that’s something that I gravitate towards.
“So I was super excited by discovering the stories of people that I had maybe heard about and maybe some that I hadn’t heard about, and interweaving that with the world of fashion.
“As I got to narrate and learn the stories, it was super fascinating. I loved learning about each subject.
“Sounds weird to say that you enjoy true crime, but I’m fascinated by the darkness of it all.”

Queer Eye star Tan France feels like a fashion outsider

OHMYGOSSIP — Tan France feels like an outsider in the fashion industry.
The ‘Queer Eye’ star believes people in the style world disapprove of him because he doesn’t “live by trends” or worry about his outfits being “last season”- but he doesn’t care.
He said: “Believe me, just because I have fame and I have wealth, I still feel sometimes like the fashion industry thinks there are certain people who aren’t right for it.
“I’m positive they would say that about me because I don’t deck myself in designer clothing, I don’t care that much about the hottest new trend.
“If a trend works for me, I will embrace it. But do I live by trends? Do I change my clothes every three months and not wear things any more because they were ‘last season’? Absolutely not.
“I’m positive that I’m excluded from the fashion industry because of that, but I don’t care.
“I care so much more about style for myself, making myself feel good, and pushing that agenda forward onto other people who feel like they’re excluded from the fashion industry.”
The 37-year-old stylist found it helpful to continue getting dressed up during lockdown, even if he wasn’t going to see anyone that day.
He told Grazia.co.uk: “Normally for a call, I do get dressed up. I wouldn’t wear a chunky boot or something that’s uncomfortable on my feet, but I still dressed up.
“Every Zoom call, I would put on an outfit. That is one of the things that I have really championed throughout this.
“I know that many people are in a position where they’re not buying new things, however, if you are feeling a bit down, just pop something on that makes you feel good.
“That was something important to me. It’s the easiest way to perk yourself up.
“Whether we’re in lockdown or in real life, putting something on your body that makes you feel nice, it changes your mood for the day.
“If you know that you’ve made zero effect on your wardrobe that day, it’s going to make you feel crappy about yourself.”

Kimmora Lee Simmons committed to multicultural beauty products

OHMYGOSSIP — Kimmora Lee Simmons insisted it is “very important” for her to create products for women of colour.
The 45-year-old star has expanded her Baby Phat range to incorporate a beauty collection, for which she had help from her daughters Ming and Aoki – who she has with ex-husband Russell Simmons – with the trio creating the Shimmer Dreams Kit, which features a lip gloss, hand lotion, and body spray, specifically with diversity in mind.
Kimmora said: “It’s very important to me to always keep multiculti, ethnic, women of color [in mind].
“I’d like to bring these young women along on my ride. Black beauty and beauty for women of colour is important, and it’s an important time, so I figured what better way than to jump in with a little kit.”
And Kimmora has found it “exciting” working with her daughters.
She said: “Ming and Aoki are a part of the next generation. Business and lifestyle have taken a change, especially now in this pandemic.
“Things are shifting online and on social media, so Gen Z, Gen Y, and millennials need to have that voice. That’s what Ming and Aoki bring to the table.
“Aoki is 18, she goes to Harvard, and Ming is 20. It’s very important and exciting because the girls have grown up in the business, behind the scenes, making clothes, designing things, boardroom tables, etc.”
The former ‘America’s Next Top Model’ judge has always championed diversity and body positivity, and hit out at brands who say they also do but then don’t follow through in their advertising campaigns.
She told Elle.com: “Brands will say, ‘Oh, we embrace all shapes and sizes and all colours and hair types.’
“But if you look back, they don’t. A lot of brands have been there for a while and they don’t. You can see everything nowadays, it’s documented very easily.
“So when we make comments saying we never had someone that looked like us in their pages or on their products, we know that.
“Watch what people do, versus what they say, and make sure that those things go together.”

Karen Elson needed new book to tell her story

OHMYGOSSIP — Karen Elson insisted it was important her book was “authentic” to herself and featured the “backstory” to many of her iconic photos.
The 41-year-old model has just released ‘The Red Flame’, five years after she was first approached about the project, and it was vital to her that the tome wasn’t just a collection of pictures.
She told WWD: “For me, it was always imperative from the beginning that the book was authentic to me. That it felt like I wasn’t just putting just photographs of me out there. That there was also the story behind it.
“Because I think often as models, we get limited to people’s expectations of us, which aren’t very high. And I felt like it was really important to show that the backstory is actually very powerful, and it is for most of the models I know. They’re a very interesting dynamic.
“I felt like it was very important for me to be honest and vulnerable as well.
“I’m not just saying, ‘Here’s a picture of me looking beautiful backstage at blah, blah, blah, or for this magazine.’ I want it to be vulnerable. And talk about things that are hard as well, that are systemic to the fashion industry.”
Karen addressed her experiences of harassment and body shaming within the industry in her book, and she admitted the #MeToo movement had influenced her writing.
She said: “I feel like there’s a moment of reckoning that has started happening these past couple of years that definitely influenced my writing the book.
“I felt like it was an opportunity to hold the mirror up to the industry and say, ‘Hey, these are the things that I see. These are the things that I’ve experienced. What are we going to do about it? What are we going to do to give models a lot more sort of agency over themselves?’”
Karen believes the rise of social media has made people more open about “bad behaviour” in the industry.
She said: “It’s been an interesting time for me as a model because I do feel the advent of social media has given a lot of people a voice. So these days bad behaviour, really bad behaviour, there can be whistleblowers. And there can be people who speak more openly about these things, which I don’t think it’s a bad thing.
“But then there’s the flip side where a lot of people in the industry are stubborn to change, and are afraid of change.”

Dolly Parton: I’m not fashionable

OHMYGOSSIP — Dolly Parton doesn’t see herself as “fashionable”.
The ‘9 To 5’ hitmaker insists she is not a fashion figure, but instead just chooses outfits based on what “fits” her but for special events, she likes to look “well-dressed and not half-assed”.
Speaking about her style in ‘9 To 5’, she shared: “I have never thought of myself as being fashionable. I’ll just tell you what I know about how I look and why I look that way … I got to dress up like I was a city girl in this film and I’ve never even thought about being fashionable.
“I just always wore things that fit me. But I thought, for something as big as a premiere, I needed to be fancy and I didn’t know how to do that.”
And discussing her outfit at the film’s premiere, she added: “I thought it was a beautiful dress. I remember feeling really pretty, and I felt like I was well-dressed and not half-assed like sometimes you are. And I just remember that was probably the first time I ever really felt like I was fashionable.”
Dolly also shared her love for make up, insisting more is definitely more.
Speaking in a new video for Vogue magazine’s Life in Looks YouTube series, she said: “I like to wear a lot of makeup. I think more is more and whoever made up that ‘less is more’ is full of it.”

Khloe Kardashian’s fitness schedule kept her ‘sane’

OHMYGOSSIP — Khloe Kardashian’s fitness schedule kept her “sane” during lockdown.
The ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ star admits there have been some “crazy times” in the world because of the coronavirus pandemic but she has turned to exercise to keep her going and keep her mental state positive too.
Explaining about her fitness regime, she said: “I definitely think because of my fitness journey and already having such a regimented schedule when it comes to working out, it kind of kept me sane during these crazy times. I had to learn to adapt by doing mommy-daughter workouts. [True] is obviously not working out, but it’s things like me putting her in a wagon and sprinting up a hill. I belted a wagon to my waist because I don’t have any help. We’re all just trying to figure it out.”
And the 36-year-old reality television star wants to set a good example for her daughter True when it comes to her exercise regime and she hopes her daughter will be “active and take care of herself” like her mom.
Speaking to Refinery29, she added of her lifestyle: “I want to show my daughter, by example, that there are healthy ways to be active every day.
“You don’t have to be so rigid in the gym. I like to work out early, it just sets the tone for the rest of my day, it makes me want to eat better and be active and healthy. By her seeing me like this, I hope she’s active and takes care of herself.”

Shanina Shaik’s modelling struggle

OHMYGOSSIP — Shanina Shaik struggled to get modelling jobs because of her “diverse” background.
The Victoria’s Secret model admits she found it tough to secure modelling jobs at first because she didn’t look like the “typical idea of what everyone thinks the stereotype of what Australians look like”.
She said: “It was really hard for me to book bigger jobs in Australia because I don’t look like the typical, the idea of what everyone thinks the stereotype of what Australians look like.
“It was harder for me to kick down a lot of doors. For my cultural background, it was harder for me to be ‘categorised’ for shoots which was so frustrating because my background is so diverse and mixed … They were just like ‘I just don’t know what category to put her in, so we’re not going to book her.'”
And Shanina recalls how she moved to New York and her career really kicked off.
She added: “I got into a modelling show. I did this show because the prize was to get a contract with a New York modelling agency. I came runner up. Luckily I got a contract straight after the show. The agent saw a picture of me and gave me a contract, and I flew over when I was 17. From the day I stepped foot in New York, I was very lucky, jobs were just flooding in for me and I just knew I was in the right place.”
The 29-year-old model also credits the Victoria’s Secret booking for “changing her entire career”.
Speaking on The Moments That Made Me podcast, hosted by Roxie Nafousi, she added of the 2011 moment after three years of auditioning: “When I booked the VS show, it changed my entire career.”

Kylie Jenner slams mom Kris’ makeup skills

OHMYGOSSIP — Kylie Jenner has likened her mom Kris Jenner’s makeup skills to that of her two-year-old daughter.
The ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ star was less than impressed with her mother’s makeup skills -describing it as more like something Stormi would do – as Kris helped to apply red lipstick on Kylie’s lips.
In a new YouTube video for Kylie’s channel, Kylie admitted she was “terrified” about the prospect of her mother doing her makeup but she just assured: “We’re bringing back the 80s. You just sit back and relax.”
It is all going fairly alright until the lipstick comes into play.
She said: “I want to go very dramatic.”
Before Kris joked back: “It’s like Stormi is doing your lips … Don’t look. Please don’t look. It’s not like you’re going to the Met Gala. You’re gonna be fine.”
After it was all done, Kris steps back and admires her handiwork.
Addressing the camera, she said: “This is my look for Kylie Jenner and I’m calling it ‘glamorous daytime.'”
Kylie liked the blush and eyeshadow but branded her eyebrows “silly” and criticised her powdering skills. However, she admitted she was “pleasantly surprised” and would go out in it if she “absolutely had to”.
Meanwhile, Kylie previously confessed she was thankful when she was younger to have her mother Kris on hand to offer her skincare advice.
She said: “My first experience was definitely with face wash! I went through that typical teenage stage and needed a good, simple face wash for day and night. My mom really helped me navigate through all of that – and she knew exactly what products to buy having done it so many times with my older sisters!”

Steve Madden launches diverse recruitment

OHMYGOSSIP — Steve Madden has joined the launch of a diverse recruitment programme.
The fashion retailer has joined other high-end brands in the launch of the Hive Diversity programme, which gives them access to a diverse pool of candidates from over 200 colleges across the US.
Liz Rodbell, President of Steve Madden, said: “In the digital age, we have access to a lot of information, but it’s difficult to filter the information and find what you’re looking for.
“This problem is especially pervasive when recruiting, but Hive Diversity is providing a single space for Steve Madden to connect with outstanding students with diverse perspectives that are genuinely passionate about the work our company is doing. For us, this kind of partnership is absolutely invaluable.”
Students can download the programme through a mobile app and upload their information before taking a five-level course about finding a job and preparing for an interview.
They will then have access to apply for jobs and follows companies who also have their own profiles.
Jimmy Choo, Versace, Michael Kors, Saks Fifth Avenue as well as Steve Madden have all signed up for the app prior to its launch.
Hive Diversity charges brands an annual fee to be a part of the platform which varies based on the size of the company and the industry.
Founder of Hive Diversity, Byron Slosar added: “A brand like Versace can see all the students following them, [including] the demographic data on who is most interested in them. It’s about not just letting the students know these options are available to them, but preparing them for those careers as well.
“And the students are in control. We don’t show the brands anything that the student didn’t share with us explicitly. That’s also a way the students can show commitment and interest. It’s never too early to start talking about diversity. We want to connect diverse students with companies who will support them in their careers.”

Lizzo urges fans to vote with Billboard Music Awards dress

OHMYGOSSIP — Lizzo has urged people to vote with her Billboard Music Awards dress.
The 32-year-old singer donned a bold one-shoulder mini dress, coated in the word “Vote” ahead of the upcoming November election to accept the Top Song Sales Artist award on Wednesday night (10.14.20).
The custom gown debuted during Christian Siriano’s spring ’21 runway show during New York Fashion Week last month which values at $3,800.
Lizzo finished the look with a pair of thin-strap black heels with an ankle-wrap detail that also hooks around the big toe.
The ‘Good As Hell’ hitmaker encouraged her fans to use their “power” and their “voice” to make a change and take a stand by voting or protesting.
Accepting her accolade, she said: “I just wanna say I’ve been thinking a lot about suppression and the voices who refuse to be suppressed. I wonder would I be standing here right now if it weren’t for the big black women who refused to have their voices be suppressed.
“If you’re at home and thinking about changing yourself, this is your sign to remain true to who you are. When people try to suppress something, it’s because that thing holds power. There’s power in who you are and in your voice. Whether it’s through music, protests, or your right to vote. Use your power, use your power, and refuse to be suppressed.”

Marc Jacobs debut lockdown film

OHMYGOSSIP — Marc Jacobs has debuted a film about his life in lockdown.
The 57-year-old fashion designer documented his time during quarantine at the Mercer Hotel in New York, where he moved with his long-time collaborator, Nick Newbold, as the city went into lockdown.
He uploaded the finished film, titled ‘A New York Story’, on YouTube on Wednesday evening (14.10.20).
Announcing the film on Instagram, he wrote: “A labor of love in the time of Corona. Directed, Filmed, Edited and Produced by Nick Newbold.
“While in lockdown at the Mercer Hotel the only real, deep, human connection I had was to Nick Newbold. The best friend I could ever wish for. We work together on everything. I trust him with everything. Nick is that guy, the one who if you are lucky, you get the chance to know and grow with all of your life. A truly extraordinary human being that you have the privilege to call your friend. Or as I call him, Nick. #chosenfamily”
It’s not just his husband he pays tribute to as the credits roll, Jacobs final message reads: “I Love You, New York, In Sickness And In Health.”
The film starts as he first enters their hotel and follows him as he orders food, give his dogs Neville and Lady a bath, and Jacobs learns to perfect his smoky eye and uses a box dye when his hair is in need of a refresh.
From start to finish, the short film follows Jacobs as he takes his first steps out of his hotel room and onto the abandoned streets of New York.
He heads down to the hotel’s empty basement bar with the camera watching as he taps his Rick Owens-booted foot to the music and sipping a Diet Coke completely alone.
The film also sees Jacobs step into a series of supporting roles, including that of an engineer called up to his room, the housekeeper, the barman, and the concierge.
Although the film rarely shows the fashion designer interact with another human, he does share the odd FaceTime call with his husband Char Defrancesco.

Karen Elson: Toxic people thrive in fashion

OHMYGOSSIP — Karen Elson thinks the fashion industry allows toxic people to “thrive”.
The 41-year-old supermodel believes warped mindsets are tolerated and hateful individuals are even praised for their behavior.
Karen can recall one specific photo shoot on which a photographer branded her “fat” despite being only 130 lbs
Speaking to The New York Times, she said: “The last time I was offended on a shoot or show was a couple of years ago. The photographer was being really offensive to everybody. He would say things to be controversial and made comments about how people used to call me ‘fat.’
“It crossed a line, so I called my agents, and we had a conversation with the magazine and with the photographer’s people and — I can’t say who, what, how, why — but action was taken.”
She continued: “At 130 pounds I could be deemed heavy. In the real world that is just insane, and a really dangerous narrative, but fashion is so insular that it has enabled very toxic mind-sets to thrive because nobody’s ever really questioned it.”
As a result, Karen has chosen not to work with certain individuals again in her career but still believes that people can change with education and help.
She added: “There are a number of people I avoid working with absolutely — because I didn’t enjoy the experience. I was maybe made to feel less than, so why bother walking into that arena again? But I believe in redemption.
“I will draw the line when there are things that are sexual in nature. But if it’s toxic behavior like bullying, acting like a tyrant on set or yelling at people, fat-shaming people — if I can say, ‘You know, I want to talk about how this behavior made me feel,’ then maybe, just maybe, I might be able to move on from it. But I will always take the side of the victim because I myself have been in situations where I’ve been treated terribly, and it has scarred me.”

Ruby Rose gets quarantine tattoo

OHMYGOSSIP — Ruby Rose has got a tattoo to remember quarantine.
The 34-year-old actress inked her left arm with the letter “CQ” to mark her time spent with her group of friends throughout her “camp quarantine” during the coronavirus pandemic.
Talking to PEOPLE, she shared: “I’m not going to get any more tattoos because I don’t want to spend any more time in a make-up chair. But I did get a really tiny one. It says, ‘CQ.’ I did it myself. It stands for ‘Camp Quarantine’ which is the group of my friends that we all kind of quarantine together and we check in on each other like every day. I tattooed myself.”
‘The Doorman’ star claims she has over 109 tattoos but had previously lost count of her body art as they started to all morph into one.
She said: “The funny thing about tattoos is that you get one, or two, or three, or four or 10, and when you first get them they’re all separate and separate enough from each other that they can be counted individually.
“I think at one point, I had 50 or 60 tattoos, but then they all morphed to become a half sleeve, and then a full sleeve and then I sleeve with half my hand, and then half my back. So I have so many now where I feel like I can get away with saying, ‘I have three tattoos.’”
Meanwhile, the ‘Batwoman’ star has explained how the pandemic played a part in her choice to leave the superhero show behind.
She revealed: “We went into lockdown with COVID and thinking of in quarantine and locked down, there was a lot of thought and reflection and everyone did it. You know, we all kind of thought about where we’re at. We were discussing the show and we had a conversation.”
