Doug Liman wants Edge of Tomorrow sequel to be ‘better’ than original

OHMYGOSSIP — Doug Liman is determined to “figure out” how to make an ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ sequel.
The 59-year-old actor knows there is demand for a follow-up to the 2014 film – which starred Tom Cruise as Major William Cage, a military offer who is trapped in a time loop during a battle against invading aliens, and Emily Blunt as Sergeant Rita Vrataski – and while he’d love to return to the saga, he’ll only do so if he can make it “better” than the first movie.
Asked about the project, he told The Hollywood Reporter: “No one has given up on it. The good and the bad news is that I’m so proud of that movie. I hadn’t watched it in years, but I’ve started rewatching it this year. I recently rewatched the movie with the studio.
“I’ve watched it with Tom Cruise. I’m going to rewatch it with Emily Blunt.
“So the good news is that I’m like, ‘Wow, it’s a really good movie,’ but the bad news is that I’m like, ‘Wow, it’s a really good movie. I only want to do a sequel if I can do it better.’
“But I’m trying to do that, so there’s hardly a day that goes by that I don’t spend a little bit of time figuring out how to do it and do it better.”
The film was moderately successful, making $370 million before it left theatres but was hugely popular with fans and is now often cited as one of Tom’s best pictures across his career.
Reflecting on the flick’s status amongst fans, the filmmaker recently explained he would rather make movies that could stand the test of time instead of those that just make a lot of money.
He said: “I haven’t necessarily always had the good fortune of having movies that have huge opening weekends.
“‘Bourne Identity’ lost to ‘Scooby-Doo’ [on] its opening weekend. And ‘Swingers’ came and went from the theatres.
“What I’ve come to understand is, I’m making movies for the long term. I’m an ego-driven guy, I’d like to get accolades now. But I also recognise that, if I was given the choice, I’ll choose making films that people 50 years from now are still watching.”

Awkwafina hails ‘funny’ co-star John Cena

OHMYGOSSIP — Awkwafina loved working with John Cena on ‘Jackpot!’.
The 36-year-old actress is a long-time fan of the former WWE star, and Awkwafina has revealed that she relished the experience of working with him, revealing that John was “so funny” on set.
She told Total Film magazine: “John was so funny on set. There were a couple of parts where John said some things where I completely lost it and then everyone lost it…”
Awkwafina also admitted to loving the ‘Jackpot!’ “script”, describing it as “unique”.
The Hollywood star shared: “When I first read the script, I thought it was different than just the usual, run-of-the-mill, 24-hour action comedies. The movie is unique and there’s real heart in it, too.”
What’s more, Awkwafina feels that her on-screen character, Katie, represents another step forward for female leads in Hollywood.
She said: “There’s a lot of room in the various universes that we have in our industry to represent [women more] now … I like where we are in terms of female action leads – I think it’s getting better.”
Meanwhile, Awkwafina previously admitted that she relished working with Michelle Yeoh on ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ and ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’.
The actress revealed that she had been inspired by Michelle, 61, during her younger years.
Awkwafina told HeyUGuys: “To work with people that you’ve watched growing up and especially her – someone who has really taken on only really, really strong female roles her entire career … that really had influenced me growing up.”

Janette Manrara doesn’t want Strictly Come Dancing ‘destroyed’ by scandal

OHMYGOSSIP — Janette Manrara thinks it would be “really sad” if ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ was “destroyed” by scandal.
The 40-year-old dancer – who is married to fellow professional Aljaž Škorjanec – is worried the recent allegations of bullying and abusive behaviour towards some celebrity contestants from their partners will overshadow the “20 years of happiness” that the Latin and ballroom programme has brought to viewers.
She told Fabulous magazine: “It would really be sad if a couple of incidents destroy the 20 years of happiness that Strictly’s brought. All of my [celebrity] partners and I are still really good friends. Aljaž is still really great friends with his partners.
“There are a gazillion stories of all the happiness that Strictly has brought, not just to the contestants but to the fans, too. They’ve been posting on social media saying: ‘Oh, I really hope the show carries on.’ And it will carry on, because it brings so much joy to people.”
The show has seen Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima dropped from the professional line-up amid claims of abuse, and Janette admitted she hasn’t been in touch with either of them.
She said: “I’ve tried to steer clear.
“It’s complicated and I’m a bit of a girl’s girl. I just don’t know. They were both really great friends and I feel very saddened by everything that’s happening, not just to them but to the [celebs] involved. It’s such a messy time right now…”
Janette herself was drawn into the scandal after Paralympian Will Bayley told how he severely hurt his leg trying to perform a jump better when he competed with her in 2019 after she branded his efforts “rubbish”, but he also stressed he felt she was under pressure from show bosses.
But the ‘Strictly: It Takes Two’ host insisted the “unfortunate incident” didn’t damage her relationship with him.
She said: “I think sometimes people get frustrated. It was an unfortunate incident and obviously had repercussions. You never control people’s emotions and reactions.
“I messaged him [Will] because we are really good friends. He immediately said: ‘I’m so sorry, it’s not meant to look like that. I don’t want you to feel like it’s you,’ and I [responded]: ‘It’s OK.’ “I enjoyed dancing with him so much. It’s the only time I’ve actually ever cried on Strictly, when we did our Couple’s Choice. It was a dedication to Great Ormond Street Hospital.”
Janette thinks ‘Strictly’ needs to bring back its “warmth”.
She said: “Everybody has a goal. They want to get to Halloween week, then Blackpool, then they want to get to the final. But we need to bring the warmth back – I don’t think it has ever really gone, but maybe it’s got lost in the mix of things.”

Love Island’s Chris Taylor wants Hollywood career after making cameo appearance in Barbie

OHMYGOSSIP — Chris Taylor wants to start an acting career.
The 33-year-old reality star is best known for competing on the ITV2 dating show ‘Love Island’ but after making a cameo appearance in ‘Barbie’ opposite Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has now hired an acting coach and would reprise his role for the potential sequel if asked.
He told The Sun: “If they’ll have me, I’ll do another line here or there.
“I’ve got an acting coach now and I’m trying to get into more that side of things. So, I do that on the side.
“I think it helps everything that I do really, in terms of presenting and content. If there are any more Hollywood opportunities, then I’m so down.
“I’d be there in a flash, I’d be there before they asked me, anticipating their request.”
But the former ‘Love Island: All-Stars’ contestant – who appears as Emcee Ken and delivers the line “And the Nobel prize for horses goes to Ken!” about halfway through the film, – recently admitted that it would be unlikely that he would be offered a role in the sequel because it took him “literally five hours” to get it right on set.
Speaking on the ‘Fancy a Chat?’ podcast, he said: “Probably not. I don’t know if they’ll have me back. Took me literally five hours to get a single line out properly. I did about 57 takes.
“I never got it wrong. One time, I got it wrong. But that was only because they said that a camera was going to come in front of me and it didn’t.
“And it was a camera that was like six miles away that I was never even gonna see.
“I think Margot Robbie’s husband Tom was just like, ‘Yeah, don’t worry mate. Like, it’s over there. You’re not gonna see it. But anyway, it just took me, it took a lot. It took me like four hours of filming.
“They got me to do it in so many different ways, so many different inclinations, so many different voices. So I had no idea what was going to go into it.
“I’ll be honest, none of them felt right. I’d walked into a studio in Watford. Ryan Gosling’s there, Margot Robbie’s there, like, all this massive set. There’s loads of extras. There’s so much going on. It was a pure, like, sensory overload.”

I’m scared to become a dad again, says Jake Quickenden

OHMYGOSSIP — Jake Quickenden is “really scared” about becoming a dad again.
The 35-year-old TV star and his wife Sophie Church recently announced that they’re expecting their second child together – but Jake has now taken to social media to share some of his concerns.
Jake – who already has Leo, three, with Sophie – said on Instagram: “What will happen to my relationship with Leo, will he be jealous of the new baby, what if they don’t get along?
“Will the dynamic in the family Change and will I be ok with a toddler and a newborn, is there enough time in the day knowing how hard having a newborn is? You have a child whom you know intimately and love with a deep, almost primal love. And it’s a worry that you don’t have any more love to give in a sort of way, like how possibly could I love someone as much as I already love Leo.
“I don’t know if I’m being silly or these are normal feelings but one thing I know is I will try be the best dad ever to all my kids. And I can’t blooming wait for little one to come along and all these worries melt away. (sic)”

Sam Thompson used to think ‘something was wrong’ with him before ADHD diagnosis

OHMYGOSSIP — Sam Thompson used to think “something was wrong” with him as a child.
The 31-year-old reality star was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) condition that includes symptoms such as being restless and having trouble concentrating – in 2023 but admitted that things would have been made “a little easier” for him had he been tested a lot sooner.
He told OK! Magazine: “As a child I always thought something was wrong with me. At that age you compare yourself a lot, and I compared myself to my schoolmates. They didn’t seem to work in the same way I did. Once I was diagnosed, it felt like a weight was taken off my shoulders. I now understand that the way I think is what makes me special and unique. It’s fine to feel different from other people.
“I think it would have made life a little easier, especially when I was younger. But, as I previously mentioned, I believe my journey can help others struggling with their own diagnosis or symptoms. I can speak up for and help people with neurodiverse minds like mine. It’s definitely not a role I take lightly.”
The former ‘Made In Chelsea’ star – who was crowned King of the Jungle on ‘I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!’ last year – recalled being “so hard” on himself before his diagnosis but now sees it all as a “superpower” he can embrace in day-to-day life.
He said: “I was so hard on myself before my diagnosis, but now, my dreadful timekeeping, concentration struggles and problems with emotional control, are something I can make sense of.
“I now know why these are a challenge for me so I can take informed steps to help manage them. I would say, please don’t be ashamed of your diagnosis. It helped me get to where I am today.
“I hope that if someone receives their diagnosis today, they are brought comfort and greater clarity, as I know it did for me. I’ll continue to say it, but ADHD can be a superpower.”

Gladiator 2 boasts Ridley Scott’s ‘biggest action sequence’ to date

OHMYGOSSIP — Sir Ridley Scott has revealed ‘Gladiator 2’ boasts the “biggest action sequence” of his career.
The legendary filmmaker says, from the off, film fans can expect one of the most action-filled scenes he’s ever done.
He told Empire: “We begin the film with probably the biggest action sequence I’ve ever done.
“Probably bigger than anything in Napoleon.”
In the trailer, lead star Paul Mescal is seen fending off rhino, which is actually made with computerization and AI.
He explained: “Computerization and AI – you have to embrace it.
“I can have a computer read every molecule and wrinkle on a rhino and then cut it on a thick piece of plastic, absolutely as a rhino’s body, which is then tailored to a skeleton shape.”
Praising the technology, he beamed: “I have this thing that can do 40 miles an hour, spin on the spot, wag its head and snarl. A two-ton rhino with a guy on its back! I mean, it’s a lot of fun.”
Mescal’s character Lucius also fights “a horde of vicious baboons, and Pedro Pascal, among other threats to his chiselled physique.”
The Oscar-nominee plays the role of Lucius Verus in the sequel, the former heir to the Roman Empire who is forced into slavery, and explained the challenges of getting into shape for the part without going over the top.
The 28-year-old actor told ‘Entertainment Tonight’: “I just wanted to be big and strong and look like somebody who can cause a bit of damage when s*** hits the fan.
“I think also, sometimes, one could, in striving for that perfect look, end up looking more like an underwear model than a warrior.
“Muscles start to grow, and that can be deemed aesthetic in certain capacities, but there is something about feeling strong in your body that elicits just a different feeling.
“You carry yourself differently. It has an impact on you psychologically in a way that is useful for the film.”
Scott’s historical epic comes 24 years after the original was released and Mescal explained that the sequel pays “homage” to its predecessor while creating a new story at the same time.
He said: “I think the main thing that I’m excited about is the homage that it pays to the first one but also the kind of new direction that the film takes.
“I think it’s well balanced in that regard in terms of the physical action of the film and the balance of the kind of political aspects of the film as well.”

St. Elmo’s Fire sequel in ‘early stages’, says Rob Lowe

OHMYGOSSIP — Rob Lowe has revealed that a sequel to ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ is in development.
The 50-year-old actor starred as saxophonist Billy Hicks in the 1985 Brat Pack film that followed group of graduates as they adjust to post-university life in the real world and admitted that a follow-up is on the way, even if it is only in the “early stages” of development at present.
He told ‘Entertainment Tonight’: “We’ve met with the studio and I have been talking about doing it for about four months. The ‘Brats’ documentary only added to the excitement around it.
“But it’s very, very, very, very, very early stages. So we will see.”
In the classic film, Rob starred alongside Emilio Estevez , Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Andie MacDowell and Mare Winningham.
Just two years ago, Andrew – who played journalist Kevin Dolenz – admitted that he wanted to reconnect with all of his co-stars because they had all gone their “separate ways” since the film was released.
He told Hollywood Life: “I want to talk to all of them. It’s so interesting. We’ve all gone our separate ways. It’s been so long ago, and yet we’re still so indelibly linked, certainly in a way that I’m not with other actors I did movies with 10 years ago, 20 years ago, you know what I mean? It’s something we’ve carried through in common even though we don’t know each other in a certain way. I don’t know if the other guys do know each other, but I’d love to see all of them again. But that just tells you I’m getting old. I’d love to see them all again and sit down and be like, “Dude, what was that?” I think that’d be kind of great.”

Emma Willis ‘gutted’ by Circle cancellation

OHMYGOSSIP — Emma Willis was “gutted” when ‘The Circle was cancelled.
The 48-year-old star presented the Channel 4 series in which contestants competed against each other on social media site The Circle site for a cash prize and Emma was upset when the UK version was axed.
She told Metro.co.uk: “‘The Circle’ – I absolutely adored it and I was gutted that they didn’t keep going with it. Yes, if they brought it back I would love to do it.
“I think the American one is huge and they still make that so I don’t think they need a UK version, maybe. But hey, Netflix, if you’re gonna make a UK version, I’m still here!”
Speaking about the reasons for cancellation at the time, Channel 4’s Chief Content Officer Ian Katz said: “It was a terrific show for us. A hugely entertaining, compulsive show. But it was a big chunk of our schedule and we decided to try something new.”
Meanwhile, Emma and her husband Matt Willis, 41, have teamed up to co-host ‘Love is Blind: UK’ and insisted that contestants have to be on the show for the “right reasons”.
Emma explained: “Everyone taking part genuinely wanted to find love.
“You can’t really enter into it if you’re not in it for the right reason, because you have to get married at the end of it. They found that pocket of people who were just sick of the dating world, and wanted to just settle down.
“[The contestants] genuinely want to have those conversations that would maybe take a couple of years.
“They’re like, ‘let’s just get into it’. We need to know where we stand on things. So it’s kind of fascinating across the board.”
Matt added: “If you look through the history of ‘Love Is Blind’. There are marriages that are still together. There’s ‘Love Is Blind’ babies. We’ve seen firsthand that love can be blind.”

Sue Barker urges BBC to bring back A Question of Sport

OHMYGOSSIP — Sue Barker has urged the BBC to bring back ‘A Question of Sport’.
The 68-year-old presenter admitted she feels “really disappointed” for the next generation of athletes who will miss out on the show and said she would love to return as host if the BBC ever decide to revive it.
Speaking on the ‘Monday Mile’ podcast, she said: “It was just the best show.. And I’m really disappointed for this next batch of athletes that they won’t have that experience.”
“I would be amazingly tempted [to return]. I would be tempted to go back to ‘A Question of Sport’, I’d be tempted to go back to Wimbledon, but I know the right decision is no.”
‘A Question of Sport’ was first broadcast in 1968, and hosted by Barker for 24 years.
In 2021, Sue and her captains, rugby player Matt Dawson and cricketer Phil Tufnell, were axed and replaced with Paddy McGuinnes, Sam Quek and Ugo Monye.
It was then axed completely by the BBC last year but Sue hopes it will make a return.
She said: “Hopefully they’ll bring it back because they haven’t said they’re going to bin it forever. So bring it back and have fun again, it’ll be great.
“I think that a lot of people miss it. I used to get people coming up to me and say, how can I get on ‘A Question of Sport’? And I had to say, look, it’s not my decision, but you have to keep winning, you have to keep putting yourself out there.
“Although it didn’t matter who won or lost, everybody cared, but it was great fun. I look back at that job as the best fun I ever had in television. Also, every time you’re meeting people in sport, when we do our job, it’s always when they’ve either won or lost. So emotions are either incredibly high or everyone’s really sad. Whereas on ‘A Question of Sport’, you can just relax and you get to know the real person.”

The 29-year-old model and the 24-year-old mental health nurse were crowned the winners of the ITV2 show’s latest series on Monday (29.07.24) and Josh admitted he knew as soon as he entered the villas as a bombshell that he was only interested in Mimii.
He told host Maya Jama: “‘I told her when I met her, she surprised me, everything I expected her to be, she was and more. So I didn’t need to make other connections.”
Mimii and Josh – who were in the final with Nicole Samuel and Ciaran Davies, Matilda Draper and Sean Stone and Jessica Spencer and Ayo Odukoya – have made history as the first black couple to win the show since the rebooted version of the series began in 2015.

The pair shared their feelings for each other in the speeches, with Mimii telling Josh: “You’re attentive, kind, gentle and loving. Thank you for showing me the qualities that I thought were unrealistic in this day and age.”
And, Josh made a romantic gesture, composing a poem for his partner.
He said: “You mentioned to me that no one has ever written you a poem before and I promised you I will so I hope you like it.”

Oti Mabuse’s Strictly return

OHMYGOSSIP — Oti Mabuse has returned to ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.
Two years after the professional dancer quit the BBC One show, Oti has been spotted at rehearsals for the upcoming series.
However, she is not returning permanently but was just lending her choreography skills, according to The Sun.
Oti, 33 – who welcomed her first child with husband Marius Lepure in December – is currently a judge on ITV’s ‘Dancing On Ice’.
Oti was a professional dancer on ‘Strictly’ from 2015 to 2022 and won the Glitterball trophy in consecutive years with ‘Emmerdale’s Kelvin Fletcher, 37, and comedian Bill Bailey, 56.
Speaking about why she decided to walk away before going for the hat-trick, Oti told the ‘All Change’ podcast: “Luckily my husband again has been an amazing person who has seen the dark days, the days where I’m in the shower crying with my clothes on because it’s so hard and it’s so overwhelming.
“He’s seen me not eat, he’s seen me overeat, he’s seen me struggle with not being able to get the best out of someone.
“He’s seen me having to deal with ‘interesting personalities.’
“So, he’s the person that’s seen the behind the scenes at the point where I’d got to where I was like: ‘I think I’m finished.’ He was like: ‘Yeah’.”
Meanwhile, the celebrity lineup for the 20th anniversary series is due to be released in the next few days.
Stars who are reported to be on the list include Pete Wicks, Nick Knowles and Jamie Borthwick.

Wesley Snipes defends Mahershala Ali over Blade delays

OHMYGOSSIP — Wesley Snipes doesn’t hold Mahershala Ali responsible for the delays to ‘Blade’.
Marvel’s rebooted superhero film has been subject to numerous issues during production but Wesley insists that his successor as the vampire-slaying hero is not to blame for the creative differences on the flick.
The 61-year-old actor told Entertainment Weekly: “I shouted him out, told him he’s got all my blessings and support. I even referenced the fact that some of the challenges they’re facing now with the project, it shouldn’t be accredited to him.
“It’s not the actor’s fault. There’s a lot more that goes on with pulling this ‘Blade’ stuff off. You need a lot of secret sauce to do the ‘Blade’ thing, man. Good luck. You’re my man, though.”
Snipes has returned as Blade for a cameo appearance in ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ and admits that he never expected to play the character again until he got the call to make an appearance in the blockbuster.
He said: “I did not think it was possible. I didn’t think we would be able to pull it off. I didn’t think Marvel was into it, Disney was into it – also because they had Mahershala cast for the next upcoming version of it.”
Wesley revealed that he had held discussions about returning for more ‘Blade’ films after appearing in the previous trilogy but nothing ever materialised.
He said: “Over the years, we’ve had very interesting conversations, some of them very substantive and some of them not.
“So I kind of resided that I was moving on from them, which is okay. I did three of them, and I thought they turned out pretty good. Not so bad… So we move on to other things, and bigger and better things, as well.”

Joaquin Phoenix: Lady Gaga spat up coffee when she first heard me sing

OHMYGOSSIP — Joaquin Phoenix has recalled Lady Gaga “spitting up coffee” when she first heard his singing voice on the set of ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’.
The 49-year-old actor reprises the role of Arthur Fleck/The Joker in the sequel and reflected on how he received vocal tips from the pop star turned actress – who stars as music therapist Lee/ Harley Quinn.
In an interview with Empire magazine, Joaquin quipped: “I do seem to remember her spitting up coffee the first time I sang, so that felt good, that was exciting, and made me feel confident.
“Gaga was always very encouraging of just, ‘Go with what you feel, it’s fine.'”
He added: “For somebody who’s not a performer in that way, it can be… uncomfortable to do that, but also very exciting.”
Joaquin also explained that his mentally ill character’s singing voice was intentionally imperfect.
The Oscar-winning star said: “It was important to protect that with poor phrasing and occasional bum notes.
“Arthur grew up hearing his mother play these songs on the radio. He’s not a singer, and he shouldn’t sound like a professional singer. He should sound like somebody that’s taking a shower and just bursts out into song.”
Gaga explained that she will be showcasing a different singing voice from the norm through her part in the picture.
The ‘Poker Face’ hitmaker said: “People know me by my stage name, Lady Gaga, right? That’s me as that performer, but that is not what this movie is; I’m playing a character.
“So I worked a lot on the way that I sang to come from Lee, and to not come from me as a performer.”

Angela Griffin’s marriage secret

OHMYGOSSIP — Angela Griffin believes the key to her long-lasting marriage is independence.
The 48-year-old actress has been married to Jason Milligan – the father of her two children – since 2006 and Angela tries not to put too much pressure on their relationship.
Speaking in Prima’s September issue, she said: “I do not expect all my joy, all my happiness or all my everything to come from him. I think that’s too much pressure on anyone. We like loads of the same stuff, and there’s stuff that we don’t both like. And if he doesn’t like doing it, I go and do it with someone else.
“The thing I’ve always lived by is being independent. My mum told me to always have my bus fare home and always make sure that I can get myself out of a situation without needing anybody else. And I’ve really done that, and it’s given me a power – the fact that I don’t need to have other people.
“My confidence is increasing as I’m getting older. When I was younger, I was scared of making the wrong decision. I was scared I would somehow say the wrong thing or do the wrong thing. Now, I think people take me a bit more seriously.”
Meanwhile, Angela is starring in new TV show ‘The Wives’ and is excited to be part of an “ensemble female-led show”.
She said: “I can’t remember the last time there was an ensemble female- led show. That’s what drew me in and made me want to be a part of ‘The Wives’. It’s beautiful: aspirational, about female friendships, about what happens when you get to your late 40s – your kids are moving out and everything that has defined you up to that moment changes.
“It’s mind-blowing that my name is on a primetime drama because it’s so competitive. So I really am grateful for where I have got to, because it’s hard to get a gig. There’s that whole imposter syndrome thing, and I think a lot of that comes from class and not going to drama school. So I am trying to go, ‘As long as I don’t squander it, as long as I don’t take advantage and as long as I don’t take it for granted, then I deserve it.”
The September 2024 issue of Prima is now on sale.
